Faulty device ? - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Hello XDA ! I have problem with my Note 20 Ultra Exynos... When I bought it, started lagging immediately, I brought it to authorized service center and they told me that device is working correctly and it has no problems. But now when I am doing something e.g using Samsung browser, or watching videos it starts freezing and random reboots. So I tried wiping cache, factory/Odin reset but no results, I am not using many 3rd party apps. What do you think ? What is the problem ? Or can you tell me how to know if CPU or GPU is faulty ? Using normal mode FHD+ and 60Hz... I'll attach drive link How it is lagging

I have the exact same problem
While the device get warm it's starts laging and freezing,
And Samsung said me too the device working correctly,
I have 2 friends who got the same device and doesn't have those problems.
This is my last Samsung device for me.
Horrible customer service .

It's an app that's probably sucking up bandwidth, CPU cycles and battery.
Google Play Services, Backup Transport, Framework and all cloud/chat apps are prime suspects.
A random reboot isn't normal though. Android 11 is a mess. Try running factory loads for the Google system apps, Gmail and Gmaps. Kill Google firebase, all feedback and all cloud crap.

The exynos chip has basically zero cooling. (No joke, look at a teardown vid of it).
It's way too much CPU for way too little heat sink.
It can throttle itself (like all chips will) but can definitely crash under heavy load and heat if it's a poorly binned chip.

It's up in the air which cooling solution Samsung used short of doing a teardown of that individual phone. Samsung isn't consistent with the internal parts used during even a single production run... a long running issue with Sammy. Most noticeable with the smaller chipsets and components that can cause a firmware update to skew some of the "same" models... until Samsung includes the inadvertent variants in the update.
You know it's bad when Samsung physically has to examine the phone to know what chipsets were used (excluding the processor, etc).

There's a reason it's running warm; excessive cpu cycles and/or excessive internet usage.
Find the apks responsible.
It's also toasting your battery*... been there, done that, and yes it's maddening until you sort it out.
This probably needlessly cost me at least 200 maybe a 1000 full charge cycles on my old Li battery
*charge battery no more than 80% to help limit the high current drain damage until the issues are resolved. Be especially careful in high ambient temperatures as you can do permanent damage to it quickly.

Thanks for tips, I had S20 Ultra before, but it was working perfectly no lags no reboots, they have same exy chips right ? The hell is going with this one ? I am very very disappointed with N20U, right now CPU temp is 26C, not every time/everyday starts warming and lagging, I can't tell what is causing heating because, I am doing same [email protected] everyday, scrolling reddit, listening to music etc. Sorry for my English if it is grammatically correct...

Your english is fine. Not sure about chipsets, it should be a great phone though once you work this out. I'm thinking about getting either this or another 10+.
I have the Note 10+ and it was a hot running power hog too. At first it was ok but within a few days it went to hell.
What I learned...
Do not enable any power saving in Device Care ie the toggle on stuff, enable fast charging only. Do not optimize any apps in the settings options.
Android can manage its self well without that junk.
Developer options>Standby apps, all buckets should show as active, if not power management is active! If active it will cause erratic behavior as well. Blocking background and data usage is generally ok to to do though.
Use Package Disaler to help tame it.

Use Kara Firewall (Playstore) to lock down the internet. It's logging feature doesn't work on Q and above though I believe. I'm running on Pie.
If you did any major firmware updates do a factory reset now. Otherwise clearing the system cache can help.
Try rolling back apks especially system and Google apks to their factory loads or updating them. Updating them sometimes makes them worse.
Clearing the system logs as needed with a 3rd party cleaner can help.
Disable all Google, Samsung and carrier feedback. Disable Goggle Firebase.
Disable all cloud, WhatsApp, FB etc. crap.
Goggle Play Services*, Backup Transport and Framework are prime offenders, clear data as needed. Package block them too and well as Playstore when not needed.
You can also firewall block Play Services* UID 10O44, Android Services UID 1000 and Gmaps*.
I use Galaxy Labs Battery Tracker, it's helpful in spotting Goggle Framework usage. Framework will always show as running even if PBed but it's usage should drop drastically.
Play with it, adjust by trial and error.
My 10+ is now a heavily optimized stock load, cool running machine that runs very well, fast and stable. It wasn't always like this though.
Once you get it optimized avoid firmware updates especially if it's running well as they can throw you straight back into the hurt locker.
*toggle on as needed. PD MDM let's you set a widget to toggle box checked apps on/off. It works great.

Thank you again for all these tips, I'll try them !
But I have two more question if you know, my device only charges at super fast charging, when I enable fast charging it says cable charging, using stock charger and USB cable what is this ? This charger only charges super fast ? and the second question is why enable fast charging ? I always charge at regular charge...

It only fast charges if it's enable and has a fast charging compatible brick/cable.
It should say fast charging when plugged in if it is. If not try toggling the switch 3 times*.
It will charge at normal speed otherwise.
Fast charging will likely decrease the battery longevity at least slightly.
Li's love frequently midrange 40-70% partial charge cycles. It takes only 10 minutes for a 20% charge in this range. It's fast.
* failure to engage or erratic fast charging can indicate a battery failure...so I learned recently
If battery swelling is spotted replace it asap.
It will push the back panel up if it swells.

Hi guys,
I bought a used Note 20 Ultra Sanpdragon version at a very very advantageous price, yet to arrive, but the one who sold it to me says he has only one "problem", the phone restarts randomly.
What could be the cause?

Thanks bro, the phone is in warranty, but I live in Italy and the phone is imported. He has no time to resolve the issue that's the reason of the sell. I hope is however service in crash, something resolvable via software.
Sorry for my English.

I would boot your devices into Safe and see if the same issue is present. If it is not, then it is definately an app, which is causing the issue. I would start by uninstalling apps from your device, starting from the most recently ones, which you have installed.

It may be the battery if you're lucky.
Start there.
If the battery is good, factory reset*, if still doing it firmware reflash**.
If that doesn't get it, it may be a blown mobo.
Probably your best bet is to have a tech with a lot of Samsung experience look at it.
*leave all system apks running in their factory load versions. Add no 3rd party apps until you can ascertain it's running stable. If so add 3rd party apps. Then only update system apps if needed and one at a time.
**may have corrupted firmware. Usually a hardware failure causes this but not always.
You can skip the factory reload and go directly to this step if you want. Load its original stock Android 10 rom for now.

It will mean if you use the back key to come out of apps, sometimes they will reload, such as phone and messaging etc, but only usually games will be closed regularly and aggressively. General lag isn't a problem, just a slight delay loading aps back into memory once they've closed.
I find if I back out of apps using the home key this problem is reduced.

How about scrolling through apps such as chrome ,Facebook ,play store. Does this issue cause any lag?
I've never really experience any huge lag. I turn off my device once in 2 days so maybe that helps.

90% of users won't even notice the memory management "issue". Only hardcore multitaskers will. The "issue" is the S6 kicks apps out of cache very quickly so whenever you tap the multitask button, the app relaunches/redraws instead of resuming from a hibernated state. There is a little lag (~0.5 second), but it is not a dealbreaker that would prevent you from enjoying the phone.

Chrome lags on every device I have owned, including the S6. Any app that uses Android WebView will lag.
I don't use facebook, so I can't speak for that app.
No Play store lag on my S6.

Really, I did'nt notice the problem with multitasking (because the S6 is so fast) before I read about it here.
Also, all the **** you hear about the battery life is not true. Of course, it's not the best out there (only 2550mah, so of course not) but it easily get you through the day (normal usage) and at least into another. The battery have gotten way better with a few updates (it was damn bad at the start) and might get even better when 5.1 hits in a few weeks.
Just turn of basic stuff, that noone uses anyway (almost) like, location history, wifi always scanning and such.

Glad to hear that, by the way 5.1 just came out recently and its showing mixed reactions among the users. Some people says that the battery life has improved a lot after the update and some just says its the same.

No, it's not out yet. At least not for the international version. Some users think, that the reason only one carrier got it yet, is because it is a "test" version. Not sure tho.
But well, as said, only out for one carrier for over a week now.

Yeah the battery life is overblown. It is no worse than any other phone with <2500 mAh battery. Anyone coming from a 3000+ mAh battery will be disappointed, but anyone that is used to plugging in every day won't know any different.
If you are rooted, I also recommend App Ops to manage permissions and save more battery :good:
Check Force gpu rendering and no lag. As far as it regards multitasking it sucks.

All Browsers destroy my battery

I am currently on stock Android 12. I flashed the unlocked stock image (non-verizon) a few weeks back. With Android 11, Android 12, LineageOS, etc. every browser I have tried including Chrome, Brave, Via, etc. all drain the battery way faster than browsers did on my previous Moto G5 plus. i would say when I am surfing the net on my browser (usually just reading forums, no video), the battery drains about 1% every 5 minutes or less. I have tried 2.4Ghz wifi, LTE, etc. and data connection type doesn't seem to impact anything.
Is this normal for this phone? anything to do to reduce browser battery drain?
If you go into battery usage graph, is the browser the only app listed as using up the battery (and not the screen brightness, or another app that may be contributing to the heavy usage)

correct. if I am using other apps the battery drain isn't near as severe. I keep the display setting "extra dim" enabled all the time and I keep it down as low as I can tolerate. I use a pitch black wallpaper use dark mode in browsers so they have mostly black background with white text.
Phone idle is the only other thing that seems to use a sizeable amount of battery according to the battery usage data in settings.
Sounds about right. Came from a Moto G7 Play (15 months back) and saw similar drain rates. All three devices have similar battery specs which plays into the units being used to assess drain. Is what it is.

I definitely did that. I only got the 4a because it was the perfect size and had a headphone jack. I assumed with a newer hardware set and similar sized battery compared to my old phone batter life "should" be better. Nope.
Na, it's more complicated. 4a sports more sensors, brighter/denser display, faster processors, etc. System and personal apps clearly play a role in longevity (behind screen brightness); you'd need to do a detail study to understand what's drawing when and why.
I use to fuss over such matters but find the device lasts a full day for my use case which is all that really matters. Charges up quick from a modest size battery pack when camping/traveling. Just like past Motos.
Not sure who I'll partner with in the next dance. Love Pixel cameras (especially in challenging conditions) and routine updates. Miss some of Moto's innovations, like active display and actions. Needs to be close to AOSP; no Samsung UX butchery. In the end form factor will likely be the deciding factor once non-contenders are ruled out.

I don't know what CPU you came from, but if the Moto only had "small" cores then of course it used less battery. "Big" cores use more power. They go faster too, but if you have a constant load, then they'll eat battery faster.
I don't know if there's a non-root way to disable the big cores, but I suspect you can do it with root (but don't know for sure).
Otherwise, you gotta get your browser to stop running JavaScript. If you're watching video you need to make sure the browser is offloading all the decoding to the hardware codecs rather than doing it on the CPU.
And if the screen is on, it might help to try and get it "more black" (eg. Use night mode) or turn down the brightness. The screen is often the primary user of power when a device is being used.

Thanks for the suggestions. My power complaints are just limited to the browser so I dont think it is just the larger CPUs. I think my standby consumption issues are related to Stock Android as I am now running GrapheneOS and my standby power consumption now matches my old Moto G5 Plus.
As for browser usage consumption, I have tried everything but disabling Javascript. I will try that and see if it breaks anything I use regularly. Thanks for the idea.
tangent back to general power consumption, I typically disable just about everything behind the scenes as I can. I keep the theme on pitch black. I use the extra dim setting to keep screen brightness as low as I can tolerate. I use night mode in browser to keep as much black background as possible. I disable all tap-to-wake or sensor based features. When I was trying to run Android 12, I disabled all the smart services and removed all the google apps I could. I removed all permissions I could. I restricted all apps I could. I disabled adaptive settings, etc. There is a bunch of stuff running in the background on Android 12 and I just could not

I dont think it is all the phone. GrapheneOS has 40% better standby battery usage than stock android 12. On graphene, it matches my old Moto G5 Plus. It is either lazy programmers with inefficient coding these days or it is google having the stock OS do waaaay too much by default with no way to disable it.
I'm trying to figure that out now.

General Game Optimizing Service / "App-Performance-Limitter" on S22 Ultra?

Pay for the money greedy developer.
Here's a link to my thread, i debloat Samsung firmware including GOS (Game Optimizing Service) for the best performance and battery.
[DISCONTINUED] Samsung Galaxy One UI - Optimization Guide
THIS IS A SUGGESTED CONFIGURATION FOR SAMSUNG DEVICES OUT OF SUPPORT/CLOSED I - RECOMMENDED SETTINGS To Start With - Factory Reset before starting optimisations - Factory Reset after every Major update (One UI/Android) - Remove SIM before first...
forum.xda-developers.com
I remember that Samsung used something like this in my Note 5 and S7 Edge from Android 6 to limit game performance on purpose.
I advise you all to disable this "optimization".
Reports say that the GOS cannot be disabled the old way b'cos it's now system app since One UI 4.0?
Will it help to uninstall insted of disabling?
You can't disable it in OneUI 4.x
It's part of the Kernel now.
Maybe instead of panicking and basing decisions on headlines and mob mentality you think about the reasons why this might have been done to start with?
Most of if not all of these apps will be very poorly optimised in general but especially for the hardware in the S22 series of devices - this means that left unchecked they will use more resources than they really need to, warming up the devices causing thermal throttling to kick in and draining the battery fast (as well as possibly reducing the lifespan of certain components).
This APK keeps these things in check, but for games where you really need more performance you can use gamebooster to switch to performance mode and recovery virtually all the lost power (if not all of it) - making it your choice to sacrifice heat and battery life for performance when you need it, not all the time.
Yeah, I uninstalled it via ADB but it returns after reboot.
Yeah only thing working from the sounds of it is being rooted and using a package disabler but yeah then you lose widevine currently.
I've disabled all it's permissions including "Change system setting", maybe that helps.
Also here it's mentioned that it's possible to disable the GOS for non-game apps, still waiting for answer to how though:

It is more or less the same discussion as we had with the oneplus 9 pro.
I am not seeing bad intend - but i dont't support the overall approach.
Most of theses apps are poorly optimized .... Even if so: That's none of the OS to take care of - especially not if you can't change / edit the overall parameters as a user on a "per App" Solution. I would love to see MS introduce something like this into windows....
Also the oem now actively could impact the performance of an App and the developer ist reliable anymore: "Well Samsung decided our app has to run like this, thanks for buying the pro version, but we can't help you". Wonderfull. And if Samsung has a bad day - maybe we are dropping the performance of some famous apps even more.... cause samsung would love to push the own alternative. Which includes some new advertising service... One could get creative with this stuff.
The reduction of lifespan is also a argument which is... at least questionable. I would argue that this is then poor product design or use of wrong or not fitting-quality components for the job. Makeing up "flaws" in Hardware by Software isn't really a solution to the overall problem
OK, so apparently this GOS thing is what the "Processing speed" option controls. It enables all apps to run at native speeds. I thought it just raised the clock speeds or something. Hmm..
@omnimax
not really. The thing is that the term - "Game Optimizing Service" is a bit missleading.
It is not about allowing named applications to run "native" or "unristricted". Named applications run with predefined ressourcess which aren't by any means "native". It's not about "raising" clockspeeds. It is about restriction of availeable ressourcces.

Nah, this is the same situation as OP did with OP9 series, except US SD user's cant even root and remove it completely so you're stuck at their mercy. If it was configurable, not enabled by default, only affected games and didn't phone home all the time, they might get a pass.... but the way it's implemented is pretty much the definition of malware.
Can't even opt-out
Always runs, with permissions or not.
Phones home with potentially identifying information. (EU people, check out how GDPR is handled here, it's probably not)
Makes your device slow.
The road to hell is paved on good intentions and what not...
I am really amused to see so much discussion on this here on XDA and social media as well. For 98% of the folks, as long as your phone runs smooth and gives you an all day battery life, enjoy it. Many app developers are also not saints. They may leak data and bloat code etc so OEMs need to take the matter in their hands. For avid gamers, they should probably get a gaming machine and use phones only for casual gaming. With current tech limits, gaming on phones will necessitate some tweaks to optimize performance. Apple is polished because it simply stops everything else in the background and focuses ONLY on 1 task on the foreground. And iPhones also do heat up after sometime while gaming.

It's really not the OEM's place to "take matter into their own hands". Don't push your use case on everyone else. Samsung does not know my user case, just like Apple does not know my use case, just like YOU don't know my use case. People bought this (and other, like the OP9) phone partially due to benchmark scores that should translate into performance metrics for their use case. When that's not the case, then they should be mad they got a paperweight. Check out the GOS enabled geekscore, it's basically a GS10. Why should users be happy they got a smooth UI experience when the things they actually want to do on a phone is gimped?
Your sentiment on a gaming machine... are you serious? This phone costs more than an actual mid-upper tier gaming PC. Some people like to play games on their phones, and some games are mobile only.
Again, optimizing by itself is not necessarily a bad thing. They just need to make it an opt-in experience, explain what it does clearly, let the users choose which apps to "optimize", and start letting people use their hardware like their own.

Yeah, maybe you're right. They need to be transparent on the optimization choices.

Question S21 plus latest software. Battery life (great)

I dusted off my xda account to let you know that this latest software is great... Battery life finally doesn't drain when not used. (battery drain while not used drives me crazy, wife has iPhone... Always in use, it lasts forever)
Anyway Im the guy that never have problems, not many apps. No smart watch connected. Not rooted, not gamer, no cloud.
My battery used to drain like 15% overnight. Not anymore. It barely uses 40% a day.. Before it was about 75%.
I'm planning to freeze my software update app. Bc whatever they did is working great.
My device is more than 12 mo old, and i use the 85% charge limit (slowest possible charge). Unlocked US model directly from Samsung.
Yay.
Definitely package block updates if it's running well now.
you lucky guy! I'm waiting for the Pixel 7/7 pro and then I'll choose between them and the Zenfone 9. Samsung cheated me for the last time!
My phone is slower than my previus Op7Pro, battery drain is huge and it's always hot. I have it from July 21 but this summer the phone has been unusable under the sun or on the beach because of the huge thermal throttling. I had to splash in the swimming pool while taking photos of my children because it was very hot and went in thermal protection.
Battery life is terrible too, I've to charge at least twice a day even without using it.
Do you think is something that can be solved by the Samsung support?

Turn off global power management, find the battery/bandwidth hogs and deal with each on a case by case basis ie optimize it. All Samsung's should be optimized for best performance.
Package Disabler is something I always use but it's not my only tactic.
Since the N10+ Samsung has lost its balance.
That said my now cool running snappy fast N10+ was once a stuttering, hot running battery/bandwidth hungry hog. It doesn't seem like the same device now, it runs like a bat out of hell. Been running like this for 2 years on the same load. All you can do is try to optimize it.
Samsung Tech support? Bah-ha-ha-ha, don't count on it. Rarely are they helpful, but occasionally you get lucky. Updates tend to break not fix things... think before you click and disable all auto updates especially firmware.

thanks for your suggestion, this night (when my children will fall asleep XD ) I'll try to check. Where can I find the option to disable the global power management?
About the power governor I'm using the mid option named High ( I have Optimized - High - Maximum) but I've tried the other two options and wait I've seen is bad performance (no increase in battery life) or increase of the phone temperatures with no real benefit in the daily use.
I'm hating this phone, I'm thinking to change asap, I'm waiting for the Pixels, hoping Google is able to manage the thermal issues better than Samsung.
About the support I don't mean the one by the phone, I know it's useless , I would mean if my thermal and battery problems can be related to some hardware issues.

It's in Device Care under battery. Individual app battery background settings don't invoke global power management so you can do that instead.
That's just the start. You probably need to use a package disabler or adb edits to disable about 70-80 bloatware apps.
This is how on my N10+'s its configured.
Unlike latter Samsung flagships the N10+ is a well balanced phone in terms of form factor, usability, functionality and power consumption.
It supports expandable storage up to 1tb.
It seems that disabling the global power management the slug mode has been disabled too. I need to check it in the next days if the situation stays like this or not. In any case I still need to block the bloatware.
Thanks for your help

General Performance degradation over time?

Is it only me? I bought the phone a few months ago received on May I been playing a lot of Apex Mobile which is totally not optimized but for iphone 13 pro max but that's not the point
On June I decided to run some benchmarks
On 3D Mark I got on WIld Life Maxed Out it doesn't even say the score now I get 6680
On Wildlife Extreme I got 2481 and now 1816 that's 35%+ slower than before what's the reason for this if anyone experiencing the same?
Geekbench same history I got Single Core 1241 and multicore 3546 late benchmark I did It got 1195 single core and 2885 Multicore
Was the ambient room temperature the same for all the tests? Did you add case for the later ones?
Once the phone gets too hot it likely will throttle back before it reaches shutdown temperature.

Maybe Google backup Transport, etc running?
It shouldn't slow that much.
The load on this stock N10+ is over 2 yo and still snappy fast.
Any updates?
Try clearing the system cache and do a memory cleaning with Device Care.
Hit it with SD Maid if you got it.
Tested at room temperature 23 Celsius. Basically the same score as when new 3 months ago.
Interestingly the score improved by 31 points after installing the July update.
Also taken at 23 Celsius.
The app galaxy app booster helps to regain that factory reset feel for me. Used it twice thus far.

Definitely on the sd maid. I run it twice a week with a subsequent shutdown then boot (I let it fully rest instead of just a reboot). After any updates go into recovery and clear cache and repair apps. Also, go to battery, background usage limits, and put all apps that you don't need immediate notifications in sleep, and games and such in deep sleep. Honestly, running sd maid and the shutdown/boot really help.

Using global power management will cause erratic behavior ie the battery management junk.
Enable fast charging only from that group.
In individual app settings disabling background battery and data use if needed is ok, that's not global power management.
Developer options>standby apps, if all buckets show as active, power management is disabled.
Its pretty normal electronics like capacitors and resistors decrease thier value over time the reason is thermodynamics

Not really. No electrolytic caps. Good for many hundreds of thousands of cycles. Components will fail outright rather than drift so far out of spec that you notice a change.
The battery (easy to replace), C port, AMOLED display, switches and flash/ram memories are at highest risk in that approximate order. Aside from the battery in a well designed/manufactured device the lifespan of a heavily used, well cared for device is at least 5 years.
A good case is mandatory to limit G loading to survivable levels in drops, to prevent direct impact damage and excessive frame, display and mobo flexing.
Firmware upgrades/updates are a major risk, avoid if not needed.
Care to avoid water exposure and to keep battery heat levels below 103F when using or charging.
Avoid using in direct sunlight, protect from sunlight. Keep display brightness on manual and below 50%.
