That can't be answered for upcoming devices that haven't been released to the market yet, it can be answered for devices that are currently on the market though.
I can certainly tell you that all new Nexus devices(pixel devices now) are always rootable as soon as they hit the market and they usually have plenty of custom development available and are easy to modify and recover. A Google Nexus/Pixel device is always a good choice.

Well I am using AT&T. I also currently have a Samsung Galaxy s6 active

Any phone from a popular manufacturer (samsung, google,Lenovo,Motorola) generally have a very healthy community of modders which release the exploits in order to root such phones.so a phone from either of these manufacturers is a good bet if you want to root your phone.

AT&T probably offers Google phones, try finding a Google Pixel or one of the recent Google Nexus phones, AT&T should have them.
Besides, you can get the google phones directly from the Google store on payment plan, go to the Google store or Best Buy.

Yeah, that's a service provided by google that uses multiple networks including your home WiFi to serve your activated project fi device no matter where you are and syncs your devices and your google account including your PC if you're signed into google on it. Base fee of $20 plus your data, you pay before you use the data and any left over is reimbursed to your payment account where you can cash it in or apply it to the next month.

iPhone isn't worth having, Samsung flagship devices usually have root and lots of support as long as they don't have a locked bootloader(most newer models of Samsung devices have locked bootloader that can't be unlocked), high end LG devices usually have good support also, the mid range and low range LG devices typically don't get a lot of support.

All of the newer Sammy devices will be locked down. I dont see them reverting that due to their Samsung Pay.

Switching to Verizon from Tmobile.

I'm switching to Verizon from Tmobile, I can't make up my mind on the GS3 or GN. I get a good deal threw my company and I can get either phone for $ 49.99. I want the Nexus because it has the best development and gets all the latest updates, and want the GS3 because of the amazing hardware and features...
What's should do?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
Spec wise the S3 is better, Development wise the Nexus is better but the new Nexus is coming out this year. So, it's all up to you in you want an older phone with little bit worse specs than a newer phone with better specs unless you want to wait for the new Nexus.

You definitely made the right choice.
We have both phones on our VZ corporate account. The GN has a few more ROMs available, but other than that the G3 is light years ahead of the obsolete GN.

Plus the GN has almost a year of development time, it hasn't been a month yet for the GS3. Give it some time there will be some killer stuff on this phone.
Btw.. The roms and themes already available for the GS3 are fantastic, battery life is great and it will only get better. Go for the better hardware, roms will come!

I would honestly be surprised if the next Nexus phone is available on Verizon.
The GNEX was problematic because of the CDMA radio. The whole 'not a real nexus' and all. I think google has shown us how they want to start selling Nexus devices, and it doesn't appear to involve a carrier.

If they do this, there's no way in hell verizon would approve having a device that goes over their jurisdiction be allowed on their network. The only way you can get a device on Verizon is through them.

Well, what about the GS3 Developer edition?
I don't think you'll regret having the S3! It's been a great phone, and even though it's "locked" - there are/will be plenty of custom ROM's, hacks, and themes you can put into it!
I like the concept of the Galaxy Nexus but the screen is not as great as the S3, and even though it's only a 4.3 inch device, while the S3 is 4.8 - the S3 is the same size as the nexus and even a little thinner!!! Definitely nicer in my opinion!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition headed to Verizon and AT&T

Not sure if I should hold out for these versions but from my understanding either this dev or google version will only be 16gb?

Even more AT&T S4's will be on Swappa, craigslist, and ebay. All depending on the price of course. I would think it would have to come under the Google edition price for folks to be interested.
If this is priced under the Google Edition, I'll probably be putting mine up on craigslist when the Developer Edition it comes out.
Unless, of course, this could help Adam or Dan or someone else find a permanent unlock for the bootloader...

Thank you for pointing this out.
Half of the people posting on these threads no idea how to root/mod/flash anything as it is and are learning. Half of the people I talk to about my s4 being rooted don't even know what it means, I say ROM, they go "Whats thats!"
When I sold my s3, the guy had no real concept of what it meant when I said It was rooted running a stock rom...
"What does that mean?"
"Um... let me put it this way... You're getting better battery life, features, and all sorts of stuff than a regular S3 is..."

Samsung to roll out 4.3 in October

This has been known and posted for some time now. However, it does not mean that AT&T or Verizon will be getting the update that soon. Canadian S4s are slated to receive the update sometime in October, but I would be surprised to see AT&T roll it out any time this year. With a locked bootloader it will be better to get a hold of the Canadian or International update and let the Devs incorporate it into the MDL bootloaders. Maybe even safestrap can be updated to allow those types of hybrid ROMs on MF3?

Three possible ways to run 4.3 prior to the official ATT release:
1) Have an MDB/MDL phone and use loki.
2) Safestrap and hope the MF3 kernel is compatible.
3) SS adds kexec support.
I think the biggest reason is that the Samsung Smart Gear only runs on 4.3 so if they don't force the phone co. to allow the update then they will lose sales for the smart watch very fast
Samsung is trying to get the market before the IPhone releases their watch next year

Samsung doesn't have the ability to force AT&T or Verizon to do anything. It's actually the other way around. AT&T and Verizon are simply to big in the US and they are considered Samsung's "customer". With around 100 million + subscribers each, Samsung simply can not afford to "dictate" terms to them. Samsung will be more than content to profit from the Gear sales that will accompany the Note 3 sales for the time being. Eventually, 4.3 will roll out to AT&T and Verizon S4s, but I wouldn't bet on it being anytime before Q2 of next year. Of course, it is just speculation.

Yes I mentioned Att in there...but I didn't specifically say Att was the only one that would be delayed...I said the carrier variants will be delayed, granted yours won't be delayed as long since they don't have to throw a new boot loader in it will still very likely be delayed so they can rebloat it and test it them self before releasing it to their customers.
And yep...a flash able version will soon be available for us. Hopefully its compatible with the mf3 kernel so those on safe strap can enjoy it too

Sure I don't have the Samsung software, but I can load a Samsung Rom if I choose to do so. Also this version of the S4 is more compatible with Linux than the Samsung S3 is. I can plug it into my laptop, drag and drop to and from the device. Wasn't able to do so easily with the S3.
Fellow Canadians,
1. Do you think Samsung will include a patch that will lock the bootlader when they roll out JB 4.3 ?
I'm asking because unlike in the U.S, the Canadian S4 has an unlocked bootloader
Well, unless it was AT&T who was the driver behind the locked bootloader in the USA ....
2. if I uncheck "auto-update", am I safe ?
(because if I root before the rollout, I dont want to lose my root

Yeah... I'm also in the same position. Though they said they will release it in 2017... But they said the same thing last year so I really don't know.
I just want to avoid the thing that I would root, get a custom rom, whatever I want and the week after they would announce it...
Though...... I'm used to Android Pay so much that I probably don't even care anymore lol. When I'll feel like it, I'll probably just mod the sh*t out of my phone.

Android Pay doesn't use MST so it's useless as most places don't have contactless.
And besides, Barclays' own contactless mobile app is a lot better than Android Pay.

I agree that Samsung Pay would be best generally, and am also eager to use it in the UK however I disagree when you say most places don't have contactless here. Don't know which part of the UK you're in but here in Essex, it's hard to find somewhere that doesn't have contactless

Is there any phones that have great rooting support?

I am just curious is there any AT&T phones with rooting support . I was thinking of buying a LG phone but I am not for sure does this phone have root support
Well, no phone does actually have root support out of the box. If you are talking about modding support then the Nexuses and the Motos (especially the G series) have a really good modding support (speaking from experience). Hell, the Moto G4 was one of the first phones to get official lineageOS along the various Nexus. I can't really speak for LG, but a quick search here on XDA it's probably going to give you a general idea of the modding community status

Get the LG then. I was saying that the Google devices are always a sure bet for root and custom development. Google doesn't do all the tricky stuff to lock their devices and make them unrootable, they WANT users to root them and they want users to create custom development for them, that's the purpose of the Android Open Source Project(AOSP).
All current google devices have this kind of support and so will any new device they release. Google devices are always a sure bet for custom development. Other manufacturers/carriers have a tendency to go through a lot of trouble to make the popular devices unrootable, especially with updates they release.

You can't just go by the name of a device, you have to do your research using the specific model number of the device.
For example, there are many different model numbers of S6 or S7 but each model number is different. This means that you can have some S6 or S7 model numbers that can be rooted but also some that can't. You can't just go by whether S6 or S7 has root, you have to go by whether "this" or "that" model number of S6 or S7 has root or not.
Basically, if you're looking at a certain model number of LGV20 then you need to get its specific model number and use that number to do your research to see if there is root and custom development available for that specific model number. There may be various model numbers of LGV20, some models may have root available and some models might not, it really depends on the carrier.
