Switching to Verizon from Tmobile. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm switching to Verizon from Tmobile, I can't make up my mind on the GS3 or GN. I get a good deal threw my company and I can get either phone for $ 49.99. I want the Nexus because it has the best development and gets all the latest updates, and want the GS3 because of the amazing hardware and features...
What's should do?

Spec wise the S3 is better, Development wise the Nexus is better but the new Nexus is coming out this year. So, it's all up to you in you want an older phone with little bit worse specs than a newer phone with better specs unless you want to wait for the new Nexus.

Nobody knows except for Samsung and Google. Samsung is announcing the Note 2 on August 15th so they could possibly incorporate the new Nexus but nobody knows really.

You definitely made the right choice.
We have both phones on our VZ corporate account. The GN has a few more ROMs available, but other than that the G3 is light years ahead of the obsolete GN.

Plus the GN has almost a year of development time, it hasn't been a month yet for the GS3. Give it some time there will be some killer stuff on this phone.
Btw.. The roms and themes already available for the GS3 are fantastic, battery life is great and it will only get better. Go for the better hardware, roms will come!

I would honestly be surprised if the next Nexus phone is available on Verizon.
The GNEX was problematic because of the CDMA radio. The whole 'not a real nexus' and all. I think google has shown us how they want to start selling Nexus devices, and it doesn't appear to involve a carrier.

If they do this, there's no way in hell verizon would approve having a device that goes over their jurisdiction be allowed on their network. The only way you can get a device on Verizon is through them.

Well, what about the GS3 Developer edition?

I don't think you'll regret having the S3! It's been a great phone, and even though it's "locked" - there are/will be plenty of custom ROM's, hacks, and themes you can put into it!
I like the concept of the Galaxy Nexus but the screen is not as great as the S3, and even though it's only a 4.3 inch device, while the S3 is 4.8 - the S3 is the same size as the nexus and even a little thinner!!! Definitely nicer in my opinion!

Is the Verizon GS3 still worth getting?

I was going to get this phone when it launched but gave up due to the locked bootloader issue. Now that is resolved and there are JB rom's out as well.
But now the next Nexus is probably only 2 months away and will likely ship with Key Lime Pie. Would you get this phone today, or wait?
If you're fine with your Nexus wait for the next one Imo

Only for Android
Nexus devices and manufacturer devices are 2 different monsters. To ask if the SGS3 is still worth getting it really the wrong question to ask. It is the best phone out right now so how would it not be worth getting?
If the latest software is your thing which I thought was mine until I owned the GNEX and realized how many problems that phone had, then maybe wait to see what the next Nexus device has to offer. Even then, the S3 will still be one of the top dogs for Android I am sure.
The S3 is an amazing device and I am happy I made the switch to it. S3 with ICS is better then my GNEX was with JB. Even with the great software it had on it it did not fix the terrible camera, horrible screen, bad radio's and horrific battery life.

The Note is either a device you want or don't. I sure know I don't. I cannot imagine lugging that thing around with me all day.
One good thing about the Note though is it should stop a lot more people from texting and driving : )
I'd go for the SGIII, feature wise and development wise it's going to be one of the best phones for a while IMO.

The Note II is not an option
I'm just a little worried that the phone development may not be as active as the other GS3 versions or the Nexus, or that VZW might find a way to lock it down again.

If I were you I would wait for the next Nexus phone, since you know the development is gonna be huge. I really wanted to wait for the next Nexus, but I lost patience and got the S3. Having said that the S3 is a beast of a phone, I love it. But again if you can wait then the best bet would be to get the next Nexus.
I think ur safe either way, the Nexus always has great development but I had a terrible experience with the Galaxy Nexus, so I can't see going to another Nexus device. Even when it comes out I can't see it being any better than the S3, I picture it basically being the S3 with aosp android
Look at it like this, the Galaxy Nexus was still made by Samsung, as you seen from the lastest Nexus they weren't willing to give up the best features like camera and processers. I'm sure they are not going to give google the best features making the s3 obsolete. When the Nexus came out the s2 was still just as good if not better to be honest.
The software was the big difference between the Nexus and S2. Once the S3 gets Jelly Bean... Oh damn
10 million and counting
With the number of GS3's sold and the popularity of the ROM's (judged by post activity, download activity, etc) I would say that development for the GS3 will continue for some time. The hardware is certainly there to support it. With the unlocked bootloader there is nothing stopping the development from improving for at least the rest of this year if not into 2013. You will be happy with this phone or I'll eat my hat.
Yeah unless you are really after AOSP I would get the S3. It's a great phone and I highly doubt the next Nexus will have much better, if better at all, specs. The nexus phones don't tend to be next gen spec wise just newest software and pure AOSP builds.
The S3 is the best phone on VZW, has Verizon officially confirmed it will be carrying the next Nexus?
Google just released JB and only 1 phone has it officially and you're saying they're going to ship a phone in 2 months with KLP on it? Where do people get this stuff? Jesus.

Help choosing a phone..

Hi
I'm planning to move on from my SGS 2 to a newer model.. but I'm not able to make up my mind.
I'm interested in the 4G SGS 3 though I've been thinking about the next nexus phone from LG or the upcoming HTC One X+...
My current phone is working perfectly fine but I'm looking for a phone with more speed as well as with 4G/LTE..
Should I wait it out for early next year to have better choices or should I just go in for the SGS 3?
By the way, Samsung is my preferred manufacturer, followed by HTC.. I've no idea how LG phones are in terms of build quality, support, etc.
Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Thanks.. I like the SGS3 a lot, though it's just so difficult to decide on one phone...
By the way, here in Finland, we have a deal going on for the Galaxy Nexus, with the current price of 370€ (http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/s?s=1&q=51397+or+23156) and is valid until next Monday 21.10 and this seems to be the best deal in Finland at the moment. The standard price is ~450€ I think...
Is there any sense is getting the Galaxy Nexus considering there are the newer Nexus devices coming up? In particular HTC “J Butterfly” Nexus 5 (along with the LG Nexus as mentioned previously)?
Thanks again. Cheers...
Edit: Also, regarding the processor, I'm no expert but from the reviews and reports, I see there are the Tegra 3 processors (like the one in HTC One X+) or the Qualcomm 'snapdragon' processors or Exynos processors and similar... Which is the better one? Should I chose a device that comes with a specific processor if I want to have a speedy, fast, high end phone?
And of course, I would like a manufacturer that regularly updates the OS without major delays whenever a new Android is being released...
Well I have the nexus, and that price is very very high. Ofcourse it is new from store but I have my nexus for 275 euro's. Second hand but only 6 month's old. Great phone but if I were you, I should wait for the gs4. Depends on how fast you need a phone, considering the gs4 is coming out in march 2013. If you can't wait I should definately buy the HTC one X+ or the GS3.

Thanks a lot.
I'm not in a real hurry to get a new phone as my current SGS2 is working great (and there is a possibility that JB will arrive soon for the SGS2)... But I just wanted to kind of 'upgrade' from the SGS2 to a more powerful, newer phone... Hence my questions regarding should I really wait (though I understand it's a kind of silly question considering how many new devices keep popping up every month) or just go in for a model such as the SGS3 or HTC One X+ that's been proven to be a great phone....
Basically I can wait for the new one.. I'm looking at having a new one by March/April 2013.
If you can wait just wait Mate, I know your feelings so many new phones but can't choose a good one and every time there is coming a new one out.

Work phone with an exact requirement/feature
Background:
I have just bought a Motorola Defy Plus. The reason I purchased it was - I wanted a phone that could allow me t record work calls and Defy Plus seemed promising as it enjoys good amount of support in the developers here and it was like very cheap. Now when I see the work involved in rooting and flashing custom rom I find myself not too sure about my capability of managing the whole process. Even if I do manage the rooting and flashing the custom rom, I still do not have any definitive information if call recording will be possible
New search:
Given the above now I am exploring any other phones that will allow me to take care of this requirement of recording my calls incoming and outgoing , without speaker, in the stock straight out of the box condition. Besides this particular requirement my usage of the phone is very mundane - some voice calls, minimal texting , little bit of email, no games , minimal camera, once in a while a couple of minutes of music if ever.
So if any of you can give me a suggestion i.e. which phone and which app - if you have a working combo - which will solve my problem shall appreciate it very much.
Cheers
Wait, even if the nexus devices aren't to your liking they are going to drive the price of current devices down. I have the SGS3 but sources / docs for exynos processors are sketchy so support isn't stellar. TBH if support matters go with nexus although you'll have to sacrifice sd support.

I would recommend the G3. You can wait for the next phone to come up but you'll find that there is always a new phone about to be launched so you can wait forever. I've recently transitioned to the g3 and enjoy it very much. Liked it a lot better once I rooted and put a JB rom on it.

Android 4.2 and 5.0 touch wiz

And the rant begins...
Felt like venting to my fellow XDA members at how utterly ridiculous these lags in updates are.
How on earth does Google release android 4.2 Jelly Bean back in October 2012, and only TWO phones are currently running it?
Is Google being held hostage by each carrier so much to the point of a simple .1 update? What will it take for this nonsense to finally come to an end!?
Not to mention Verizon leaks 4.1.2 out this week and they removed premium suite....what exactly did this update offer?
I cant see a successful future for any of these companies or Google if this cancerous relationship between the OS and Carrier continues much longer.
And supposedly 5.0 key lime pie is coming in May?
What phones will be running 5.0 out of the gates if any? My guess is Galaxy S4 will drop with 4.2 or possibly even 4.1.2
Any thoughts?

thank god for root, other wise we'd be screwed,
yes officially the tbolt just got ICS but theyve been running that stable for some time now.
it's unfortunate, but at least we do have root, and phones like the HTC DNA that get screwed like that will be able to port the M7 sense 5.0 ROM to the DNA.
it is what it is and sucks lol, and I agree with above, it's mostly Verizon

I can't imagine Google is happy that less than 1% of all smart phones world wide are currently running their latest OS.

I Dont get why Google doesn't stand its ground. All phones should be running AOSP. I have actually grown to like touchwiz but if all phones ran AOSP, I bet updates would come quicker. May not be right away for companies like Verizon to add boat, but that's it. There's no standard. While that does add variety and choice, it also adds confusion. Whatever the aosp release is at is basically a beta in everything but name. Its deployed to a small group of rather technical users where issues can be ironed out. Then months later everyone else gets the carrier's and manufacturer's refinements/adulteration of android. And repeat.
If you want to be in he new release club you need a Nexus or phone that's popular but long in the tooth so the hardware is pretty much mastered. If you buy a non nexus phone you sign up knowing full well that you are at the mercy of a 3rd party. This isn't 2010 anymore . the pattern is well established.

Verizon is a member of the Open Handset Alliance. One of the founding members, I believe...
Hard to believe, based on their behavior.
When the Hell will they get it through their heads that they really don't need to be involved with much? I pay Verizon to provide a network (and ONLY a network), not hold my hand. I mean, really? Could a phone really harm their network if it hadn't passed through their approval and bloatware installation processes?

I'm almost willing to bet it drops with 4.2. I'll give you a breakdown.
Does Google handle the customer service if a Android device has issues? No. Who does? Either the carrier or the manufacturer. That being said, there needs to be documentation of every single little thing done in an update in order for proper support on both ends of distribution. Customer service has to be trained along with tech support and any type of sales person, which takes time and money. On the software side it seems Samsung is pretty solid. We've gone from 4.0.4 to (soon) 4.1.2 with a total of (correct me if I'm wrong) 4 updates and this phone hasn't even been out for a year. When it comes to the "premium suite" did you ever consider the possibility that the test build that we have is simply "bare?". Makes things easier to troubleshoot if you don't pack in every single little feature to begin with.
You have to remember that you don't pay for the updates themselves. Yes, you paid for the phone but when you buy a Windows 8 laptop are you going to get mad because you won't get the next version for free? I don't speak for other manufacturers but have to say Samsung is doing a pretty damn good job with keeping us updated. Sorry, had to rant. Just irritates me.
Oh, and yes, they do it in order to sell more phones. But, can you blame them? Samsung is doing everything they can to stamp Apple out. That means releasing a flagship phone that will be the first of that manufacturer to launch with the newest software version.

I don't speak for other manufacturers but have to say Samsung is doing a pretty damn good job with keeping us updated. Sorry, had to rant. Just irritates me.

Don't be sorry. There is some truth in what you have said. Our device has made the jump from ICS to JB which I am very thankful for. Kudos to Samsung there.
My issue is that the S3 and Note 2 are in my opinion the best phones to date... and the carriers are so stupid that they can't communicate with Google and prepare customer service for the release of the new OS on or near its release date... Then Google will announce android 5.0 just as the carriers are getting 4.1.2 or 4.2 .
I understand they want to keep the customers wanting more.... but at some point I feel that Google start developing hardware and move on.
Apparently Samsung has already begun the opposite..

Haha, yeah. I just didn't want to come across negative. thanks for being understanding. I do understand your frustrations. I don't see 5.0 dropping for awhile. Google said its going to slow down a bit in their releases because Jellybean is beautiful. It brought fluidity to a "fragmented" market and while only two phones officially have 4.2, jellybean is gaining a share of the updates. I think it and ICS almost comprise 50% of the market share for Android versions which is amazing in my opinion.
You know what I'd love? I'd love for the Galaxy S IV to use the new graphine dipped batteries. Can you imagine that with 2gb of RAM and just a revisioned Exynos Quad Core? It could run at a constant 1.0ghz minimum on each core with the screen on so that multitasking would be beautifully smooth and would be easier on battery life since tasks could start and end quickly. But, anyway, If Google is going to go directly into hardware they'd have a good start. I'd love a Nexus phone to rock a MAXX battery and a 1080p AMOLED. If I recall the new AMOLED that will be in the GS4 uses 25% less battery. The combination would be ermahgerd.
Also, didn't Samsung already try another OS? pretty sure Bada didn't do too well lol.

cancelled my order for the S4

I'm usually the type thats the first to get something new and as soon as the s4 was available for preorder for verizon i placed an order. But after reading some reviews and with the potential of other phones coming out this summer I was second guessing myself. The real deciding factor was when I flashed MOAR's rom on my S3 that added some of the s4 features. After a day with the rom I cancelled my order to wait and see what other phones are going to come out. I'm a bit dissapointed that the S4 isn't head over heels different than the S3 to make it a no brainer for me. Anyone else in the same boat?
I'm not in the same boat, but I was reading a post in the s4 sections about how most people are only getting about 6 hours on a charge...max. Also, that the phone is real laggy even after most of the features have been shut off.

I read some of the same thing and with the nexus 4 rumored to be coming to verizon as with the HTC One, I figured it can't hurt to wait it out and see the best option out there this summer. I wouldn't be worried about the lagging though as I'm sure Samsung will have an update to fix that or worst case someone will come up with a bloat free rom that should have the phone screaming fast.
Ill wait for the galaxy note 3.... Im sure samsung will have it in a premium build
iSheep... iSheep... Meowww that's Apple VZW GSIII
I'm hoping to hear some motorola x-phone announcements soon. I might be looking to buy a nexus or x-phone (whatever the product ends up being) off contract later this year.

only issue with what i'm reading about the X is that its going to be sold as a lower/mid end phone and not premium.
The rumors about X-phone not being high end were debunked. I'm also waiting to see that, Note 3 and next Nexus. Also in a few months we'll have phones on S800 as well as Intel SoC's.

I'm also waiting/hoping for the xphone. I am "assuming" that's what Verizon is waiting for as well.
The note 3 will just be a big s4 unless they go with one of the new concepts which I think they should

I just poked around the sprint, att and T-Mobile threads and most people are posting screenshots of over 4 hours of screen time. That doesn't seem bad to me!!!
I preordered my s4 and am hoping the HTC one is announced before my phone ships at the end of the month. If the nexus 4 is announced I'd prolly even give that a shot!!

I as well have the gs4 preordered may switch if the htc one is released soon!

Its a brand new toy. Of course its only going to last 6 hours if you don't put it down for more than 5 minutes in that amount of time. The important part is how much screen on time and mobile data connected time they got in that 6 hours.
I too have been reading some reviews and may stick with my s3 until something else is released. Maybe the Motorola X?
Another year for Phone another year of questions
Well just like last year, I told everyone that the international version of the S3 would be the quad core and the US variant of the S3 will have a dual core.
Looks like we are facing the same dilemma, the S4 intl has an octa core and the us S4 has a quad core.....
The fact that you are comparing the S4 to Moar rom on the S3 is sad.
First you don't have 4.2.2 to utilize all the nifty stuff.
Second you don't have any of the new sensors of the S4.
and lastly, the NOTE 3 will follow the same footsteps, expect the S4 hardware with some software and rom tweaks.
I personally wanted the Note 2 but got the S3 for size.
I will not make that mistake with the Note 3!
How many of you won't buy this phone again for the terrible radio. I don't know how its not a bigger issue for most of you. Everyone with a different phone on Verizon gets much better service, especially Motorola phones.
www.ryanhortonmusic.com
Also expect the note 3 to be locked down tighter than your wife after you told her she was fat...
You mfrs rewarding Samsung and Verizon, still continuing to pay them for the phone and the service while they lock us all down tighter deserve to have your android hacker card revoked.
As a community we should be rewarding those who offer openness and shunning those who close it down.
Keep paying them for closed devices and they're gonna think they're doing the right thing.
We didn't buy moto and now look at them. We didn't buy HTC, now look at them.
Speak with your wallet. Don't buy a locked device.

i'm not comparing my s3 with MOAR saying its just as good as an s4. What I was saying was that from what I'm looking for i can live with my s3 longer now that it has MOAR over picking up the s4 right away. Yes there are more sensors, its quicker, better camera, etc... but nothing that really is something that would wow me to have to pick it up. As some people stated this is more a S3S than an S4. if the nexus 4, google x, or htc one does come out for verizon it would honestly make me consider jumping to another brand. No knock on samsung but since the s3 they made everyone else up their game.
As it seems to be at least for me, hardware advancement starting to peak. Everything now is pretty much software progression...for now.
I have the S4 on Sprint and will be coming back to get it on Verizon on the 30th. The phone is sick. I am getting at least 24 hours on a charge with over 4 hours screen on time on the stock ROM rooted. I haven't tweaked anything. Whoever said they are getting 6 hours must have been talking about screen time. Lag? What lag? I have seen none. The GPS is scary accurate: instant 10 ft and knowing exactly how fast I am driving. There are so many advancements on this phone compared to my S3 that I can't wait for community development to move on it. If I can get over 24 hours on stock, it'll probably be 3 days with something like CleanROM or Carbon.
GS3
GS3 for the win!!
Yeah I agree that phones are starting to hit a critical mass level. I was going to keep my s3 and just update the software but my wife has an upgrade so I'm gonna use her upgrade to get the s4 and give her my s3.....unless the HTC one or lg nexus 4 is released before it ships at the end of the month.

Should I Upgrade now or later?

So. My mom told me that she's gonna buy me a new phone before I go back go high school, which is 8/26. Now, I don't know if I should upgrade now or later. Obviously, I have T-Mobile. And I love this phone. But truth be told, its getting old. The reason why I ask, is well. Because there's just not so many options on T-Mobile right now.. 1 HTC, 2 Samsung, 2 Google/LG, 1 Nokia, and the new (to us) xperia z. So I turn to you guys, to see what you'd do. If now, what phone would you get? If later.. wait for which phone? iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S/6? New nexus phone? Cheers, guys.

First of all, if your mom is like mine I would upgrade now before she changes her mind lol. I gave that a lot of thought but honestly every phone is going to have its ups n downs so just pick one and enjoy it. If it were me, I would just go with an s4 and call it a day. Htcone is nice, but I think a plastic build comes with a lot of benefits.

Lol. Yeah true that. The reason why I'd get the s4 over the one, is that modding it is easier.. well not easier, but I'm already comfortable with Odin. But, I have just always loved HTC and HTC sense.-.

I've never cared for sense. Or TouchWiz. Or any stock framework really. I always do my research and make sure there are a lot of options before I buy a phone. CyanogenMod support is a must. If CM supports it, basically everything does.
and SHAME ON YOU for even mentioning iPhone! lol jk, jk.
If it were me, I'd go with the Nexus 4 if your mom could spring it without breaking the bank (I know you mentioned LG/Google, so idk if that was an option or not). Otherwise, my choice would be the S4 or the Xperia. It'd be a tough call either way.
Get a phone with lte . I tried the exhilarates lte. It is awesome.
N4 is about to get replaced in a few months as it looks. Buy an s4 or wait for the "s5"

You should follow TmoNews. If your into Ubuntu phones, T-Mobile joined Canonicals Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group.. We might get the Ubuntu Phone Hint hint. I also remember seeing on TmoNews about the Moto X passing through the FCC with T-Mobile written all over it. Wait a few months or so and wait for new phones to come out.

The s4 has sooo many custom ROMs your head will spin.Lol
I'm running Carbon( my favorite) and just installed wallet by Dwitherell. Plus Steve Kondik has one so you can't lose.
Oh and you'll love the camera, nice pics with fast bursts.

Whoa - I didn't know that sort of thing was being used beyond the note 2 I can't take credit for that stuff, I just put it together differently.

If you Google nexus 5 you will see that there are now very strong rumors pointing to a Motorola Google nexus being out q4 this year and it will not be a moto x gpe. If that happens I would wait for the next nexus - that will be my next phone. But if you must have a user replaceable battery and SD card slot then the sgs4 would be the phone to get.

Might not be a bad idea if your mom is still willing to buy it for you and that's the type of phone you like. Personally I'm still waiting for a Nexus 5 announcement. I'm ready for an upgrade (T-Mobile actually let me out of my Blaze contract 6 months early so I could switch to the new unlimited plan) and, if I were choosing amongst the phones available now, I'd probably get the Nexus 4. Unless I had someone buying the phone for me, if cost were not an issue I'd go the S4 Google Play edition.
