Samsung to roll out 4.3 in October - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Here you go folks... Take it with a grain of salt. Thought others would be interested in this.

This has been known and posted for some time now. However, it does not mean that AT&T or Verizon will be getting the update that soon. Canadian S4s are slated to receive the update sometime in October, but I would be surprised to see AT&T roll it out any time this year. With a locked bootloader it will be better to get a hold of the Canadian or International update and let the Devs incorporate it into the MDL bootloaders. Maybe even safestrap can be updated to allow those types of hybrid ROMs on MF3?

Three possible ways to run 4.3 prior to the official ATT release:
1) Have an MDB/MDL phone and use loki.
2) Safestrap and hope the MF3 kernel is compatible.
3) SS adds kexec support.

I think the biggest reason is that the Samsung Smart Gear only runs on 4.3 so if they don't force the phone co. to allow the update then they will lose sales for the smart watch very fast
Samsung is trying to get the market before the IPhone releases their watch next year

Samsung doesn't have the ability to force AT&T or Verizon to do anything. It's actually the other way around. AT&T and Verizon are simply to big in the US and they are considered Samsung's "customer". With around 100 million + subscribers each, Samsung simply can not afford to "dictate" terms to them. Samsung will be more than content to profit from the Gear sales that will accompany the Note 3 sales for the time being. Eventually, 4.3 will roll out to AT&T and Verizon S4s, but I wouldn't bet on it being anytime before Q2 of next year. Of course, it is just speculation.

Actually the gear was tested with the S4 and works fine on 4.2.2. Google it. Or go to Android Authority

Yes I mentioned Att in there...but I didn't specifically say Att was the only one that would be delayed...I said the carrier variants will be delayed, granted yours won't be delayed as long since they don't have to throw a new boot loader in it will still very likely be delayed so they can rebloat it and test it them self before releasing it to their customers.
And yep...a flash able version will soon be available for us. Hopefully its compatible with the mf3 kernel so those on safe strap can enjoy it too

I had an S3 and needed to get a new phone, but since I was not up for an upgrade, I splurged and got the S4 from google play, now running 4.3, without the AT&T BLOAT

But you also lost all the software features that go along with getting an S4. I personally think that the google play versions of the HTC One and S4 are not worth it because you lose the features that make those phones unique.

Sure I don't have the Samsung software, but I can load a Samsung Rom if I choose to do so. Also this version of the S4 is more compatible with Linux than the Samsung S3 is. I can plug it into my laptop, drag and drop to and from the device. Wasn't able to do so easily with the S3.

Fellow Canadians,
1. Do you think Samsung will include a patch that will lock the bootlader when they roll out JB 4.3 ?
I'm asking because unlike in the U.S, the Canadian S4 has an unlocked bootloader
Well, unless it was AT&T who was the driver behind the locked bootloader in the USA ....
2. if I uncheck "auto-update", am I safe ?
(because if I root before the rollout, I dont want to lose my root

Android Nexus 3 (Prime) on Ice Cream Sandwich

I know there are probably at least a dozen threads on this new phone where I could ask for speculation but after browsing them I decided I'd make a thread specifically on the release date. As many of you may know, there was recently a report by the Electronic Times in Korea that the new Nexus Prime would be coming in October with ICS, debuting alongside the iPhone 5 and iOS 5. There has also recently been a Samsung roadmap with device releases/specs detailed for the rest of the year, according to the roadmap the only Android phone running ICS is set to release in early December. On top of that, there was reportedly a Nexus Prime spotted at Verizon HQ. Obviously this data conflicts but both the roadmap and the electronic times seem to me to be decent sources and if it was indeed spotted at Verizon HQ, obviously Verizon will get the Prime or a version of the prime at release. My questions are:
1) Do you guys really think they are going to release the Prime to complete with the iPhone as many people are speculating or do you think it will release according to the current Nexus schedule which is usually around December?
2) Do you think multiple carriers will get the Nexus Prime/version of the Prime? If so, what carriers and do you think they will all get it immediately?
Again, I know I could have posted this thread in multiple places so please forgive me =]
I think the Prime will be released near the iPhne 5 launch maybe a month after.
I expect to see it across all the American carriers. T-mo will get first dibs, then sprint and verizon and you'll have to import for AT&T unless they make it one of their LTE devices for the year
Could you shed some light on the reasoning behind your carrier timeline? Why T*Mobile first? Ect.

I agree with our mate!
I'm just curious why Tmobile would get it first, people seem to think that ICS is being released early to compete with the iPhone 5 so you're assuming that the iphone 5 is definitely going to tmobile and that google/samsung are expecting a lot of consumers to switch to tmobile when it is released?

The previous nexus phones have been GSM, right? So it makes sense that, at least initially, GSM carriers will get this one first - however I don't doubt other carriers will get it eventually, if not right away as well.
If they really want to compete with the iPhone, it MUST be on ATT and Verizon...or else...it, uh, can't compete lol.

I think what Samsung/Google are doing are trying to steal the thunder from Apple by putting the release nearer to the iPhone 5. I've also heard that on September 1st Samsung are holding a mobile conference for their new handset. I mean, I know this isn't a Samsung device, it's Google's so they would announce it, but this phone is going to knock the socks off everyphone out there at present according to the specs.

Switching to Verizon from Tmobile.

I'm switching to Verizon from Tmobile, I can't make up my mind on the GS3 or GN. I get a good deal threw my company and I can get either phone for $ 49.99. I want the Nexus because it has the best development and gets all the latest updates, and want the GS3 because of the amazing hardware and features...

Spec wise the S3 is better, Development wise the Nexus is better but the new Nexus is coming out this year. So, it's all up to you in you want an older phone with little bit worse specs than a newer phone with better specs unless you want to wait for the new Nexus.

I would honestly be surprised if the next Nexus phone is available on Verizon.
The GNEX was problematic because of the CDMA radio. The whole 'not a real nexus' and all. I think google has shown us how they want to start selling Nexus devices, and it doesn't appear to involve a carrier.

Well, what about the GS3 Developer edition?
I don't think you'll regret having the S3! It's been a great phone, and even though it's "locked" - there are/will be plenty of custom ROM's, hacks, and themes you can put into it!
I like the concept of the Galaxy Nexus but the screen is not as great as the S3, and even though it's only a 4.3 inch device, while the S3 is 4.8 - the S3 is the same size as the nexus and even a little thinner!!! Definitely nicer in my opinion!

Oh Really? 4.3 being pushed by samsung

Yeah for now its only the I9300 international hardware , Verizon has their own schedule, rumored to be Nov. 22. Verizon is always late, usually months late.
Now that 4.4 source is being released, they are just now rolling out 4.3. So chances are we wont see an official 4.4 for the S3 and this will be it's last release. They'll most likely use 4.4 to get people to upgrade to new handsets.

To be fair, Verizon started pushing 4.3 for the S4 right on time. It was also the first US carrier to do so.

Galaxy S5 will be saddled with Touchwiz. Even the recent 'leaks' of what might be the new Touchwiz were pretty gawd-awful to me. It will be significantly more expensive than the Nexus 5 unlocked, and will be locked down hard on AT&T and Verizon. Bigger than 5" screen is a non-starter for me. N5 is just about perfect size for me. It will probably have a better camera app but the individual pixels on the sensor are going to be tiny, probably leading to fairly poor low light performance. S5 will probably have a larger battery, but I doubt they'll be getting 3000+ mAh. Even if it gets Snapdragon 805, I doubt it will perform a ton better than the N5 due to software and TW 'feature' overload.
Coming from the DNA, s3, and note 2, absolutely not. The Samsung 4.3 ota locked the s3/note 2 hard. All new phones will ship this way.

megapixels don't matter by the way on a standard photo that 90% of people take, store, and share.
I have the S4 now and will be getting the n5 this week. The main reason i'm switching is because the galaxy series bootloaders are locked and no one has found a way to bypass them. I've been using safestrap but its not the same.
The pure Android experience is the way to go. Updates right when they are released, No bloatware, and a free to modify phone with no locks on it.

Same. Coming from a AT&T Galaxy S4 I can say this x100. Never again a Samsung product. The only S4 feature, and feature from the S5, is AMOLED, and for the S5 the 2K display. However the camera on the Nexus 5 is superior to the S4 I had, at least I get WAY better photos. I will never buy a Non-Nexus Android phone again. Although iPhone6 may tempt me.

and you guys are all looking at this wrong. this will be a great device as long as you purchase the unlocked/google play edition. no bootloader crap. as far as firmware goes, that can be changed. my rooted S4, with twrp and everything else this nexus has, including a superb aosp-based rom and kernel, was a thing of beauty. i expect some big power and solid support for the international and unlocked variants.

technically, any device that is 1920x1080 is "2K"...only like 80 pixels shy of it. close enough. tech industry should refer to higher spec displays as 2.5K, really.
Might do, depends how it's built. I'm already a bit bored of my Nexus 5 and I think Android is getting to a point where the leaps in software are less and less. I've even gone back to stock and relocked my bootloader I'm that happy with stock Android!
We'll see once it's released but never say never...one thing is us UK users won't face the same issues as you carrier-branded US users will as our bootloaders will be easy to sort out so that's a moot point over here

The S4 Google Play edition was not available on Google Play for almost 3 months since it was released. I bought my AT&T Branded one in late May 2013, and I believe July the Google Edition came out. So they aren't out right away. Likewise you have to judge a device by it's shipped firmware, as in some cases like the AT&T Galaxy S4, with the inability to downgrade firmware versions, if you're device shipped with "AMF3" firmware or newer, you're stuck because Loki was patched and you cannot get around the locked bootloader. With no guarantee of a Google Play Edition version, there may be no way around it. As the International version (Such as the I-9505) are not available for sale to consumers directly in the US, some people haven no choice but to use the carrier branded versions.
This is my first nexus phone ... i came from a galaxy s4 and i also love the nexus5. It's a phone that you can pratically say you will get the update exactly when it released from google.

there will be a GPE edition or at least an LTE-enabled unlocked variant. my comment on the shipped firmware and my entire response in general was aimed at this particular edition of the S5. if you're an international user or north american user with the unlocked LTE model, you wont be dealing with the bootloader issues and, again, the shipped OS wont matter. that can be changed.
I'm not interested in going back to Samsung devices. I spent too much time switching ROMs, trying to get an AOSP(ish) experience from my S3. There were always things that didn't work, and the battery life was sh*t as well. Since getting this phone I've stayed on the same ROM for ages, and it has no bugs. None. I don't have to waste my time any more. A 2k screen (even if it is AMOLED, which I love) and an extra gig of RAM isn't worth the trade-offs.

Root has been achieved for the s7 and edge on ATT and Tmobile. May want to word your answers in such a way that they dont seem like absolutes.
Also every international model of every phone comes sim unlocked. Thats why there is a category for unlocked phones.

That's awesome news! Do you know if they posted the root procedures for Tmobile S7 on XDA? I haven't seen them yet.

Oh ok...seems like a few people are having issues with that method (as most new root methods), but it's definitely a start in the right direction.

I've seen both sides on it, some got issues and some are reporting that everything is okay. Another interesting aspect is people reporting this doesnt trip knox, while being rooted samsung pay doesnt work but when they revert knox still shows 0x0.

They my understanding is knox remains 0x0 because it uses a repair kernel

Crazy how there is not much talk about the Note 7 with it only about 2 weeks away. I am really mixed about getting it still since I know it is going to be locked. The only thing that is really holding me back at this point is not being able to use Viper. There are a couple of other things that would be nice to still be able to do but those aren't major. Android has come a long way and the need for a custom rom just isn't what it used to be. I really like the Note line and prefer to stay with it so I may just bit the bullet and go without root. Whether I get it at launch will also depend on the special offers they are giving out. I got the Year of Netflix and free VR with the S7 Edge before I returned it so if they have a simular offer, I will probably jump on it.

I was just thinking this same thing...i own my note 5 outright so i may just trade it in if there's a good deal...progress has been made with root on the s7's so I'm hopeful similar leaps are made...nonetheless, i have to say, my girls note 5 is bone stock unrooted and with few exceptions there's little that can't be done...for her nothing, and for me, well, I'm just finally learning to develop on Linux so i definitely want to keep SOME rootable device in my stable as well, but that's might end up meaning a second device (next nexus?) and swapping my sim around smh...it's just that usb3.0, ip68, 256gb storage and 6gb ram PLUS a true edge screen is almost too much to resist, root or not, plus there's always samsung pay while it's still 0x0...i see myself getting it, only question is when and will i also spent flagship money on a second device (OP3? nexus? Htc?- pretty much all are sd820...) until a good root method or unlocked bootloader becomes a reality....

I'm always with 2 phones, 1 is usually a nexus device, the note series have been my go to though. I'll likely get the N7 and do what I can do to it with in the confines of no super user. Nexus devices are so cheap, you can always pick up one for around $200, excluding the 6p. The devs here on XDA are top notch, so I'm always confident they'll come up with something.

Well a locked bootloader is a locked bootloader in most cases. The s7 exploit is really just a Samsung repair kernel that was leaked that's really not fit for prime time, unfortunately...
And even that is still limited in no custom recovery or roms, just stock debloat, xposed, viper/etc...

All the future samsung usa phones which are branded tmobile, at&t, sprint and verizon will have locked bootloaders
If you want a rooted samsung phone in the future you will all need to buy the international models.
Thats why I purchased the S7 EDGE G935F international model a few weeks ago. All the international samsung phones are very easily rooted and none of them have locked bootloaders.

I wouldn't say can't, it can in fact happen and has. It just isn't easy. There are snapdragon devices that never got stable CM builds. Just in the case with the exynos, the odds aren't in their favor.
If I do get the Note 7, which I probably will, it will be with the knowledge that if most likely will never be unlocked. I have been running pure stock and not even rooted for a couple weeks now to see how unrooted life is. I have been rooted and running a custom rom for several years now. Like I said before, there are some cool features in custom roms but the need for them just isn't what it used to be. The only thing I am truly missing is Viper. So for me it comes down to the simple question of which is more important. What is more important, all of the new features of the new phone or the ability to use Viper.
I swore I wouldn't buy a locked phone and would move to the Nexus line but based on the rumors of the next Nexus phones, I am not thrilled with them. I just don't see anything that I would rather move to over the Note 7 based on what we know so far. That along with the fact that I am on the original Jump program so without needing to buy the phone outright, I need to pick from T-Mobiles selections.
A lot of the reasons to have root can be accomplished with apps so life without root isn't a huge deal for me anymore. I just wish there was a Viper alternative that can be used without root. Anyone know of one?
