Scrolling smoothness - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Hi guys , I got honor 8 a few days ago .
While this CPU is crazy fast in opening apps , I noticed that scrolling is not buttery smooth allways .
Even my old nexus 5 that is way slower in some cases has better scrolling , is there any way to improve this ?
I m on android 6.0 and stock , performance mode turned on . Thanks..

With scrolling i just notice today i went outside (-20 C) And the screen is so trippy i dont know how to explain it

Yeah feels a little wierd to me also
You can turn gloves mode on mybe that helps .

When you say the scrolling isn't smooth are you saying it's laggy. As that coukd be due to the amount of apps you have opened in the background.

I would not call it laggy , it only could be a little smoother sometimes . Well I usually have 4-5 apps open .. 4GB ram

You can try L Speed and see if it does anything needs root

Smooth
As for me the scrolling is quite smooth

Mybe I m just spoiled coming from non-stock nexus

I've noticed I appears to be a little blurred when scrolling

I noticed that with some applications when I was on B162 EMUI4. 1. Since using B360 EMUI5. 0 is less noticeable.

I would called it stuttering or display hiccups more prominent in some applications. The EMUI's user interface is not affected just apps. In Nougat this problem is less noticeable.
This stuttering reminds of my Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 4 with Jellybean and KitKat.
The Honor 8 is no where as smooth as my Oneplus One and that's sad. Hopefully Huawei will make this better in future updates. It's still a new device with much potential.

Yeah could be as I am still on 4.1

+1
i also feel that Scrolling is not buttery on this CPU and RAM.,., i am on B162

This is probably a software issue that will probably be fixed in a future update.

You can try Nova Launcher where you can set the speed of scrolling. For me this launcher is very smooth and customizable.

No, it has nothing to do with EMUI. EMUI is buttery smooth and fast. It has to do with some applications using multiple graphics or thumbnails.

Did that before but it doesn't seem to alleviate the problem. I went back MM and the scrolling Stuttering seems to be worst than in Nougat.

I updated to B360 (android 7.0) and I think that stuttering is gone

Not gone but improved. But battery life is worse. The stuttering was caused by cpu scaling so now more cpu power is used for it

[Q] Disabling Cores (Root)

So I finally decided to root my G Flex 2. I've been talking about disabling cores for a while. Thought it may help the thermal throttling issues. Once I rooted the device I downloaded "Multicore CPU" and started disabling cores in a couple different combos. I've finally settled on disabling cores 4 and 7. Since I disabled the two cores heat has not been an issue and cores 5 and 6 are running at 2ghz. Reduced lag, and benchmarks have shot up some. Personally enjoying the lagless environment. Figured I'd post my experience with this. I'm hoping overall battery life will be better as well. Won't know for a day or two though. Oh and it stays cool while charging and in use. It used to get really hot before.
Anyone else have any experience with this?
So here are results of disabling cores and thermal throttling or lack there of now.
I also want to note that my benchmark scores were lower than the note 4 after some updates until now

Ok on YouTube mine gets a bit warm but not as hot as in Chrome (on normal sites, nothing fancy). Watched twitch in Full hd for an Hour yesterday without any heat...seems like some Apps are better optimised for the sd810 than others
Are we getting a sd808 by disabling 2 Cores?

I am also coming from oneplus, I must say you are sadly right. Newer is not necessary better in this case.
I hope with some optimalization this can be a Ferrari.
I was already let down by LG a few years before, let's hope it is not the case now.

I have the AT&T version of this phone and for me cores 4,5,6 and 7 are always on except when the cpu goes above 36C then cores 4 and 7 automatically get disabled. I'm also not experiencing any lag and it's actually very smooth and fast. It also doesn't get very hot unless I run Antutu benchmark like three times in a row. What kind of CPU temperatures are you guys seeing when your phone gets hot?

How is the 7.0 upgrade overall compared to the XZ on Android 6?

Can anyone list the bugs they've found since updating to 7.0 from MM? Also, how is battery life and overall speed/smoothness compared to MM? I can't find any definitive info on this and as I'm happy with MM I'm loathe to upgrade but know that the update will auto-install one of these days.
better battery (at least on data for me )
smootheness is a bit better
and the ram management is hell better than before...
camera i belive is same
boot time a bit better
Totally agree with that adding the camera is enough good for my expectations (im not trying to win a photo competition) and it works even better in low light than 6.0 (just an impression)... Otg is workin very good...
Bugs? Need more testing time none by now?
The lack of mhl or any other video out alternative is killing me badly. Very dissapointed
No fm support by now also.
So it's just as fast and smooth?
No bluetooth/Wifi/signal issues?
No lag or freezing? Thanks guys.

Right, new swipe from top shortcuts needs two pushes to activate instead 6.0 single tap to enable style. Don`t like too much but works ok
If you just pull down the a row of icons, that's still tap to activate or deactivate.

S8+ 955FD lags

My 6 months old 955FD with Exynos CPU started to lag very badly especially in Pokemon go. I'm taking about not able to toss a pokeball properly. I have already used game tuner to cut the gaming resolution to 50% but to no avail. The lags are more noticeable during day time and smooth during night time. I've noticed similar pattern with my Note 5 (Exynos too). Can't believe a 6 months old phone will behave as such. Anyone having similar issues?
None of the lags are noticed on my iPhone 7+.
ofc there will be no lag on iPhone since their ram management is on point
Samsung phones have bad ram management system and it bugs the hell out while doing heavy tasks
check if u have any unnecessary apps running in background

Check for apps /services running in background. Under Development Tools
Uninstall /Disable what you don't need.
Install Greenify and hibernate apps at screen off that you don't need running in background.
This solved my lag and battery lif3 issue after upgrading to Oreo.
I just got another Samsung fw update 2 days ago fixing performance and specifically battery life issue by reducing running background processes.

Gpu Turbo update available (C185)

Hello everyone
A few hours ago, Firmware Finder received .150 firmware update for C185 models. I personally downloaded it even though there was no change log and updated using Hurupdater. I had noticed no changes at a first glance but then i moved to settings to confirm that the phone had updated. It said GPU Turbo below my version number. I decided to check out a graphically intensive game I play called 'Honkai Impact 3rd' on max graphics and 60fps which would heat down the phone within a few missions and there would also be quite a few stutters when alot of special effects would be going on at the same time before. I can confirm that since the update that the stutters have been reduced but most importantly, the phone hasn't been heating up as much in game after an hour of playtime. Battery life has been noticeably better too as there is less drain for sure. This is just my experience, can't wait for everyone else to get it as well, so I can know what is happening (whether GPU Turbo is actually on or not). For now though, I'll be testing more games to see how the phone is doing but I'm liking this so far.
very good news
In China, there have been a lot reports of the phone getting even hotter, the battery draining faster and the camera being more sensitive to flaring (esp. in night mode). I'm curious if people here will confirm or if these bugs have been fixed in the meantime. Personally, I think I won't update to .150 when it's out, better to wait a few weeks =)
Better battery drain during gaming or even in general use?

From my experience (which is less than a full day) the phone doesn't get as hot as it normally did before the update unless I play extensively for about an hour straight. Any less and I've been seeing good heat management so far. Of course I'm still in the early stages of testing and cannot comment further until 3-4 days of testing.

Interesting news! Any antutu or other benchmark result?
Still waiting 130 update for C432 model of p20 pro.
Funny how some areas gets updates so much faster although same phone model.
What about normal apps specially Google photos. Is it any smoother with no lag or stutters ??
Hi, please check the slo-mo 960fps recording.... Any improvements in the alleged artifacts during 32x slow videos? Huawei is using framerate interpolation for it which throws in visible artifacts during close up slow motion...

For everyone interested to know benchmark results, to my disappointment, results on Antutu, Geekbench and 3d mark remain very similar to those prior to the update. Which is very strange indeed as I'm definitely noticing an improvement in battery life, device heat management and fps slightly whilst gaming. It is possible that im running a test build and have not been running a full taste of Gpu Turbo, and it's also possible that Huawei's claim of 'Gpu Turbo' just means much better device thermal manamagement for more consistent FPS and battery life. Lastly, it is also possible thst Gpu turbo isn't even on since this is a test build and it's just that they've tweaked device performance and improved battery life compared to the previous version I was on (. 130). Thus I cannot judge fully and I'm waiting on an update to prove me wrong. I check firmware finder everyday and love testing new things. Although if what I'm experiencing is actually gpu turbo then I do not mind as at the very least, I see some improvement in battery life.

Scrolling has been super smooth. Google photos has been super snappy. The only app I see causing any scroll lag at this time is Twitter and that I'd blame the app itself rather than Huawei. I think it's definitely more fluid than the previous version of the software I was on but it is not heavily noticeable as both were very smooth for the most part.

I took this opportunity to compare the slow mo performance to my Mom's S9+. I believe the artifacts are still present as I see lines and weird effects popping up randomly which I do not see on the S9+.
Gpu turbo is only for games so you won't notice any improvement other that in gaming, that's why there is an special application tor that "game suite" that you can enable the acceleration.
I'm running b150 for a few days and so far the phone is better from before in term of small tweaks here and there and i noticed the front camera is better now,not perfect but very usable.
The battery has improved a little but but it was very good before too.
I had read that the antutu would be similar to snapdragon 845. I guess it was just a lie.

Oh thanks for the info, I actually didn't notice this and yes I see games running much nicer with the setting turned on. However, they also heat up the phone quicker and drain alot of battery life. Should you choose to turn the option off however, you notice the same games don't drain as much battery life anymore and the phone doesn't heat up as much and the battery life is noticeably better than before the update.

That's pretty good considering you're gaming. I'm definitely getting atleast 7-8 hours of sot when I'm not going all out and about 5-6 on maxed out heavy gaming for most of the day. Even with the Gaming Optimization turned on the phone doesn't heat up alot as long as you're in a well ventilated environment. Im not much of a heavy gamer myself but definitely see better fps on Csr Racing 2 (used to lag a bit in the garage) and Honkai Impact 3rd with optimization in gaming suite on. Honkai is definitely giving me 60 fps in 90% of the scenarios so the lag is barely noticeable unlike before. As for benchmarks, unfortunately you cannot add benchmark related apps to the game optimize feature so the GPU turbo can't be turned on for them. Strangely enough, every other app (even regular apps) can be optimized.

januari stock rom

I personnaly feel this stock rom is worse then previous stock, it's not as fast and verry battery hungry i'm lucky to get 4.5 hrs of SOT. When i open a few apps it grinds to a hold and stopps opening the app all together. I flashed Oreo a few days ago and it's mutch better than the latest stock. I think people want to improve on theire firmware, not go back or down
The general thought I have is that the devices are always better with their launch rom. Every update/upgrade screws something.

Not sure if that applies to every phone but, for this phone it's definitely correct. I was using Pie/Q ROMs for a while and I was happy with them. Until I've downgraded to Oreo. In Oreo the phone is blazing fast and has insane battery life. But some apps don't work properly, especially full-screen apps like Instagram stories or photo viewing in WhatsApp. Other than that, out of all the ROMs I've tried on this phone, stock Oreo (9.6.11.0) was the best in terms of performance and battery. But I remember in my old Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, custom ROMs made the phone a beast. Unfortunately, this phone seems to get worse and worse with every update.

Not all have the same experience, as my Mi A2 Lite was very laggy with Oreo out from the box, even dialer app is very laggy. Until 10.0.3.0 came and it was snappy (not as I wanted to, but at least not as bad as Oreo on my phone). Then the June update came and it was more laggy than Oreo and I called it SD card eater as it also literalky destroyed my 2 SD cards. The jump on custom ROMs did the fix on me and I don't mind the Xiaomeme updates afterwards.
I prefer Pie over Oreo, with every security patches, I feels the phone become more smoother and snappier. I've disabled some system apps that I really don't use too much like Google, chrome and YouTube. Never tested tough with those apps enabled.

With those apps enabled, it never affected with its performance when I was on stock. Its just the June (and I think July) updates were just buggy here.

It does affected the performance, especially when playing games like PUBGM, you'll noticed the difference. Some apps (system nor user apps) do a background check, some of them always on standby state. 4 gb of RAM is large enough for multitasking but Daisy CPU not too high for handling multiple foreground and background activities. Just set your choice through the Developer Option.
