Any fix for the ram issue? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Hello yeaterday i updated my s6edge to 5.1.1 and custom rooted kernel, but after some hours i have a really poor ram control, i cannot have 2 apps openned because the first one closes and the launcher redraws and thats so annoying and irritating
Is there any fix to this? Thanks in advanced guys

I've been having this issue with all phones running Lollipop -- not just an S6 issue. I can report that it is getting worse with each upgrade, so I think this is 100% intentional.
I have to "Close All" in my task menu before attempting any real multi-tasking. Even then, or after a fresh reboot, I still can't manage to keep the 2-3 apps open I use while driving that run in the background. I never had this issue on 4.4.X KK with my LG G3, but once it hit L, bam, issue creeped up.
I used to be able to listen to podcasts in Chrome and navigate away and it would play indefinitely. Now, it closes either immediately after opening another app (or just going to the homescreen or settings GUI,) or it happens a few minutes later without touching the phone.
I'm sure this is a result of terrible battery life. This is of especially great concern on the S6 with the TINY battery. Samsung is going to tune the OS to be even more aggressive here. I'm not sure we'll ever see a 'resolution' here because it's likely by design.

So you're saying the battery life of the s6 edge won't get better in a near future? I have so terrible battery life, i think its comparable with the galaxy s2 ??, maximun 4hrs of screen time while with my m8 i used to get 6hrs. Im losing 8%/hr in standby while a normal phone should be 1%/hr or less

Even with heavy use and stuff running in the background, I double that

I wouldn't expect it to improve that much. If you aren't seeing massive wakelock issues, the reality is this phone doesn't have enough battery for you. It's TINY.

No WAY you're getting 8 hours of screen time... 4 hours is about right if you're actually doing something with your device. Also, how are you running a bunch of stuff in the background when it so aggressively kills these apps? You probably think you are, but in reality it's paused.

I text all day as well as use Facebook and many other social media apps. Push notifications are prompt so they have to be running. Is your deep sleep working and what firmware version are you on? I'm not sure if it matters much but I also greenify other stuff that doesn't have push notifications

I'm completely stock, unadulterated 5.1.1 OGA. I've never seen 8 hours SCREEN ON since I purchased this phone, and that's including the first one I had that I put custom kernels on and wakelock fixes, and all that stuff.
As far as I've heard, stock doesn't have deep sleep issues. If you were performing some sort of black magic, combined with using only Wi-Fi, and no BT or other radios enabled, perhaps I could see 8 hours. Other than that I am skeptical.

Im on 5.1.1 OF7 with unikernel, so i thinl it already haa the deep sleep fox built in. Im also using greenify to hibernate some apps that doesn't have push notifications, but still dont get the enough battery is like (i wish id get the same as my m8 at least). With the custom kernel, it solved the ram issue but my battery still sucks so hard

[Q] ICS OTA official - battery life opinions

Looks like there isn't a thread on this yet, and now that I, and many others, have the OTA up and running, I thought it would be good to compare notes.
I don't have anything meaningful to say right now as I've been too busy playing with the new rom to note when I installed, what percentage the battery was at when I did so, and so on.
However, I've had a nexus s for a long time and I am a serial rom flasher, and you get an impression pretty quick of how quick the battery is going down - I'm sure you all know what I am saying.
Seems to me that my battery is going down quick. I won't know for sure until I actually go to work on Monday. Then I will wake up in the morning with 100% charge and all will become clear as the day goes on.
But the rest of you must be getting some impression of battery life by now - so what do you think??
ps - Liking this rom. All desire to buy a galaxy nexus has evaporated for the moment, which is really good as that is one expensive phone
It's not great. Seems like Mediaserver is the biggest culprit for my drain. Even though I dont listen to music for long periods of time. Seems like maybe it's got a runaway process or something.
It's hard to say at this point, though.
I reckon my battery is going down really fast. was going to vote - but just discovered you can't vote on your own poll. What a pisser
<<edit>> you can vote on your own poll. i wasn't logged in..................
It's really hard to judge this early since the update just came yesterday. Also some may think their battery life is poor but maybe since the update we've all been playing with our phones more?

No, it's been confirmed on other phones too. Even Galaxy Nexus users are experiencing it. The problem seems to lie in something that's not letting the phone sleep. If you break down the usage of Android OS, "Keep Awake" runs for WAY too long, which keeps the phone constantly awake and draining battery.

Yeah, I just noticed something, that might be relevant. Went into wi-fi settings. Options have changed a bit and so has default setting.
New options are like this................
Question asked is, "Keep wi-fi on during sleep".
On GB the default answer would have been no - only have wi-fi on when screen is on.
The other options are to have wi-fi on, "only when plugged in", or "never".
Mine was set to "always". First time I had been into this menu so looks like that is default, and that has got to burn the battery up. I've now set it to, "only when plugged in".
So, will see what difference it makes, and post back.
To Be Honest I'm Getting Better Battery Life Than When I Was On The Latest Kang.

I thought this thread what asking the battery life from GB to ICS.
How can Galaxy Nexus users judge if their battery life is worse? Worse compared to what? They only had ICS to begin with.
Frankly, I've been using the ICS Alpha's for about two weeks and now been using the official OTA ROM for a few hours and it has been the same battery drain.
I have no opinion on ICS vs GB battery drain if that what this thread is asking.

Actually, I've read that WiFi uses much less power than a cellular network - because of the shorter range. So if you're constantly using background data, having WiFi enabled can actually make the battery last longer.
So far, 'Android OS' is winning handily at destroying my battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20410020&postcount=129
I'll keep an eye on it and see if it continues.
Confirmed. This is a real battery killer it seems. My battery has been massacred!

i think what you guys are seeing is just the good old "new device effect" all over again
if you haven't notice everyone with a new phone always complain about battery problem
that's because it's so sweet you can't put it down, and you are constantly using it
since the screen eats up the more juice, you can hardly refill it fast enough
it just the only difference in this case we don't have a new hardware but we do have a new OS, which makes it all sweet brand new renewed all over again

I would be very interested to see if google roll out a future update to maybe throttle back android os's use of battery because it is either a bug in ICS or else they have just lumped more processes under the android os title in the battery menu and that's why it is so high.
I can confirm 'Android OS' has mostly more battery usage than sleep mode isnce ICS (ported versions or that one day OTA). Anyway i didn't use my phone today cuz i have left it home. But what can you say after one day.

[Q] Who's to blame for battery drain?

My phone went from 90% batt to 0% in 5h of screen off time. Usage shows Android OS 60% and SopCast 30%.
When i locked the phone i left it on the home screen.
So who's to blame? The rom, kernel or the app?
could you please provide a bit more detail like what kernel or rom you have and also if you could upload screenshot of battery usage
Rule out your application first. I'm assuming SopCast is a podcast application? If you were streaming, that will explain it. And yes. We need more details.

Anyway this is no longer related to that obscene 90% overnight bcuz i uninstalled sopcast. Now i just had 16% drain overnight (with Wi-Fi off) which is still a lot imo.
Having 18% drain overnight on JB with wi-fi off. Any ideas?
Why are turning wifi off in the first place? That is stupid if you're trying to extend battery life.
What is your cell signal like. A crappy cell signal drains battery. A crappy 3g signal that is constantly on because you turned off wifi drains even more.

i was under the impression (from gingerbread times) that wi-fi uses up more battery than 3g; this was among the tips you would find back then on android sites to extend battery life.
Anyway, i have yet to find out who is calling the AlarmManager that is keeping the device awake. Any idea how i would go about doing that?

We need more information to try and help u figure it out.
What ROM?
What kernel?
Any other modes or tweaks?
Vs Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2
I didn't mention that info so far because the initial problem of this post is fixed (SopCast (podcast app) keeping phone in stream mode) by uninstalling the said app.
Now, i believe that the overnight drain on my current JB ROM is too high.
So, here it is: Rom is Grean Bean ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1821478 ), kernel is Matr1x 22.5 (but the drain didnt change when i changed kernel (beladus, _thalamus, air) and the significant mods that the rom has are V6 supercharged and brainmaster's twks.

That was not the case in GB times or any times. Either you read wrong or the sites are stupid. Considering that for the most part the android sites / bloggers are still idiots today, who knows.
Anyways. WiFi uses the least battery. Less the 3g/2g. Should be used whenever possible to save battery. Phone in active use or idle you should be connected to WiFi over cellular data. Turning all radios off but enabling WiFi is the most battery efficient thing you can do and still have data but you won't have the actual phone. I do that at my buddies house where I get no service at all. Not going to use the phone for a couple hrs use airplane mode. That uses very little power if the phone is sleep. Turning the phone off and on uses more.
Also the better your signal is the less power the phone will use. You still gave no signal strength info. Frankly you're wasting your time with better battery stats and wakelocks etc when you don't fully grasp this radio stuff. Use that tool when you need to find something that keeps your phone awake when idle/not in deep sleep.

That's the situation i'm in. It seems i've solved it by figuring out which apps were calling the AlarmManager and the Media server, there were 2 actually: Latitude and Google Music Sync, that were waking too often. Now i've simply disabled them.
I didn't give any signal strength info, bcuz i didn't move and didn't change the radio. It's a jelly bean thing for sure (i have google now disabled). Many users have been complaining (in various rom threads) about this new found drain after the upgrade.

Yeah, I normally play with a new ROM bare boned to see if has a natural drain.
Then I add the apps that I have been using that I know do not drain battery life.
And the other person is dead in with the signal advice. I had a HTC hero before and it had many tweaks on fixing the signal so battery would last. Which is why I love the pull down notification bar and some ROMs have idle timers.
Good luck

Hello,
I need your help with my battery life, i am running 4.4.2 (everything is stock, Google now is dissabled, and no apps where running in background) on my N5 and since i updated my battery life is juster terrible. Does anyone know how to fix this?

i get similar results since upgrading to 4.4.2. From what i see it has to do with a combination of google play services and/or google now. it's driving me nuts too. My device is rooted, no custom rom or kernel, Greenify and Snapdragon Pro battery save app and im getting terrible results. What use to be a typical 10% drain by the end of the day (minimal usage), now i'm getting 50% drain by the end of the day. I only seem improvements after rebooting my device.

Ohh okay, so noone figgured out what causes it? Or how to improve the batterylife? I cant seem to find anything on several forums...
battery life is dependent on how you personally set up your device, what apps you have installed, how you manage your apps, and, very importantly, the quality of your phone/data connection plays a huge role in battery life(huge might be an understatement).
My battery is also worse with 4.2.2 -- not catastrophic, but probably a good 15% (roughly) performance drop. What I've noticed, but haven't seen any other mention of, is a tremendous increase in the number of wakes when the phone should be sleeping. With 4.2 it slept like a baby, barely sipping any juice at all, but now it's doing something every few minutes. I am pure stock, unrooted, no custom anything and don't have facebook. Just about everything's turned on -- as it was under 4.2. My only 'exotic' app is Chrome beta which does seem to be a battery hog, but that shouldn't account for this aspect of performance.
(added per comment above) Phone/data connections are identical from 4.2/4.2.2 so it is the update -- or probably just as likely, some app that needs tweaking to play nice with 4.2.2
I had the same problem after updating to 4.4.2. Turning "Backup my data" under "Backup & reset" off worked for me.
I have read in other XDA forums that 4.4.2 may be more honest about battery usage now where before it was front loading battery stats to give the illusion of better performance.
I believe most cell phone manufacturers and carriers regularly do this with battery stats and signal strength.
What is important is your individual performance. Looks like your battery is at about 70% after 9.5 hours. What is wrong with that?

I feel like my phones battery life has gotten better. I can get about 3-3.5 hours of screen time on my battery, ~17 hours. Reset the phone and don't install any apps, to see how its working. Are you getting signal all the time? Or is it jumping in and out? Because if it is, it'll drain the battery too

BetterBatteryStats log.
50% less in two hours, no games, just whatsapp and spotify, screen at min. Worst battery life I've had in Android phones
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
My battery life is excellent on this phone, and the majority of the time it's better than any other phone that I've owned (12 of them, to be exact).....and then either Google + or Chrome will start running really aggressively in the background and kill 20% of my battery within the space of a half hour. This happens even when I haven't actually opened either app. It doesn't happen often, and a reboot seems to fix it, but it's really, really annoying.
But yeah, fantastic battery life other than that issue.
Disable location reporting. This should help. I notice a huge difference. Also, when I have Facebook installed, I seem to get terrible battery life compared to when I just use it in the browser.

Disabling location reporting is one of the first things I do on any new phone. It's not worth the battery drain you end up having, and Google Now works fine without it.
I've actually been surprised with how good the battery life is at times but I have to admit it's not always very consistent.
Wi-Fi is on during sleep "Only when plugged in" and "Scanning always available" is off.
Location Mode is "battery saving" unless I need to use google nav.
Location reporting on, history off and I am not using google now. Also using Nova Launcher.
Not using Facebook, Google+ or Twitter.
Using Xposed Framework with the paid version of Greenify. Google Search, Hangouts, Keep and YouTube are the only "system" apps I have "Hibernated."

[Q] how come my battery always sucks!

something that ive been always been wondering..
every time i get a new phone i seem to have bad luck with them when it comes to battery..(optimus 4x, nexus 4, nexus 5) i always see reviews and comments saying they get X screen on time and i always get X-2 screen on time and poor standby time
ive tried everything, changing roms, kernels, checking wakelocks turning wifi or 3g off when not used(LTE always off)
the most i ever seem to get is 3 hours and thats a really good day on low performance(underclocked) and i also barely game..
how in the hell do people get 5 hours screen time and complain about it.. meaning that they actually get more! and they say they game and browse alot.. im not only comparing to people online, i also compare with my friends who get good battery.. we dont seem to be doing anything different
does anyone know the problem/solution to this?!
I really recommend to go on stock firmware and DON'T install/restore any of ur apps.
Then see what's up.

It's all about looking at what is using your battery and mitigating as many of them as you can. Some people might find they can't live without many features of a phone and so will generally get less time then someone who is willing to sacrifice certain features or adjust their usage to improve battery time.
Sharing your full setup could help us help you... ROM, kernel and kernel settings, apps installed, tweaks made, wakelocks you're having, etc.
Personally, I'm coming to the N5 from the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, and I've been astounded with the battery life of this phone. It's the first time in over a year, that I don't feel the burning need to carry a charger with me everywhere I go. Additionally, this is the first device that's made me seriously consider NOT rooting.
As of this moment, I'm running rooted stock firmware, with Faux kernel 008m, and I'm getting spectacular results! I'd love to help you work this out.
As a point of comparison, this is a battery life readout I took two days ago... I can't complain at all about nearly 27 hours of uptime, with 4 hours SOT.

This is on T-Mobile LTE the entire time, GPS on, moderate usage, and only useless apps (for me at least) frozen, including the GEL launcher, the stock news app, Google Earth, the stock email app, and the non-English keyboards...that's it.

ive tried almost every rom-kernel combination there could possibly be all resulting the same.. my stock had OK-ish battery life but still not great
im on 100% now charging so theres nothing to upload and my wakelocks show nothing just maps.. and i forgot to mention that i usually turn off location as well.. i have no problem changing to stock but most people get good battery life with roms too..i dont mind which kernel either cause every kernel will be really fast with the snapdragon 800
current rom liquid smooth
kernel - just upgraded to faux an hour ago.. phone is heating and percentage dropping fast(not that the previous ones were great)
no tweaks
kernel settings
fast fast charge, eco mode and intelliplug- all on
300000-2265600 frequency
and ondemand governer

I recommend do this on a stock ROM, but can work on any.
Have your phone set up normally. Charge it full, reboot in "safe mode" and don't open any apps. Just let it do its thing for a few hours, or over night. See how the battery life is now. It should improve. If so, you got something 3rd party killing it.
Turn off location reporting and location history. It'll improve your battery life dramatically without making any noticeable impact on the phone's capabilities (including Google Now). I also recommend disabling Google+ if you don't use it.
^Great suggestion!
@namnam123 did you have heat issues with the phone, prior to flashing Liquid or Faux? From my Galaxy Nexus days, I remember heat problems being caused (occasionally) by an improper/nonexistent wipe during flashing. You cleared dalvik and cache at least, correct?

The point is to see if the battery still drains as quickly without any third-party apps or mods. If not, then the problem isn't the phone, but rather something you installed on it. Some apps can run in the background and drain battery power even when you're not using them. Some mods like custom kernels can also worsen battery life.

yes i always wipe the cache and dalvik cache
Make sure wifi scanning is off too. And ages ago usb fast charge used to cause issues with massive battery drain when the screen was on. So turn it off and see if it helps. I am talking years ago tho. It was literally meant to be turned on when plugging in and leaving the phone alone. Then disabled when taking off charge
Also post some screen shots of your battery stats

Marshmallow battery life

My big excitement for 6.0 was Doze and I think many other people felt the same. So I thought I'd post my experience thus far here.
I sideloaded the US 6.0 ROM yesterday around 10AM with 67% left on my phone. At 11PM I had 27% left, usually going that long would have me somewhere around the mid teens at 11PM.
I don't have a lot of screen on time, but when it is on I'm usually playing a game (Hearthstone) or watching a video. My SoT varies between 1.5 to 2.5 hours on a normal day. I have a Moto 360 (2015) that I use for all of my notification checking and such so my phone usually sits on a desk or in a pocket. I leave GPS on high accuracy all the time and am usually running on wifi but stream Google Play music over LTE for about 2 hours while driving throughout the day.
You'd think that using a smartwatch would give me better battery life, but at least with Lollipop my battery life was actually worse when my smartwatch is synced. By about 5%
I am using the 6.0 ROM and cell standby yet again is what is using most battery.

Maybe time will tell
Personally, I've never really noticed the settling in of a ROM, as far as battery life is concerned.
As far as the OP, I've also noticed a slight increase in battery life, particularly standby, so it seems doze is working as advertised. I'm going to leave my phone off the charger tonight and see how much juice I lose. It's usually around 10-15%.
I flashed the deodexed debloated rooted MM from the development thread last night, so far battery life is worse than TruePureX LP for me. On TruePureX LP, my idle drain is close to 0%, but now the drain is -10%/hr to -20%/hr... I wonder if the phone is doing the internal memory encryption? (I don't have an sd card inserted). Hopefully it will get better...
Battery drain was worse when I first updated to MM, but today battery use has been great. Much better standby time than lollipop.
Can I just say...my phone was at 100% at 8:50am this morning. Right now (9pm) at 33%. And it promises me it has 7 more hours in it. Coming from a Galaxy S4 where I changed battery halfway through the day, I am beyond impressed. This is better than I expected. At first didn't get into the big Doze hype, but now. Wow.
Nevermind... DERP

Pretty sure all that does is change the filter. For me, the default was "Not optimized", so it only showed the 3 apps that aren't optimized (DMService, Google Play services, and Motorola Notification). Apparently these 3 apps cannot be optimized since they all say "Battery optimization not available".
Toggling to "All apps" just switches the filter to show (you guessed it) all apps.

Here is an update I turned off scanning in location, didn't listen to any music since I fully charged my phone. Much better battery life however I usually listen to music via bt everyday. Oh and cell standby is much better.

I'm happy with the doze effect... i get very little battery drain while its on stand by.... maybe 1 percent over 3 hours... but while using it i do see a steep drop in the battery while playing games/videos... which is fine....

Hmm...I turned scanning off as well but it didn't help with drain from Cell Standby much (probably because Im on WiFi all day anyway) but Doze seems to work now (I turned off "keep WiFi on during sleep"). I can't really complain though because I'm pretty happy with these numbers. If Cell Standby is actually reporting accurately, my battery life would be beyond phenomenal if drain from it were to be fixed.
FYI, this is on the completely stock OTA.
You get better battery life by far using LTE more often. For some this isn't an option because of tiered data but I'm unlimited. Qualcomm's.power envelope for LTE is a much more noticeable improvement on battery in the moto x. And WiFi range isn't as good as my note4. LTE on the note4 is marginally better than WiFi with power envelope tech, but still a noticeable improvement on battery. I exclusively use LTE on my note4 and moto x because of this. Less charging because I get better battery and better for the battery life long term as I'm using less charging cycles. And moto needs to hurry up on the marshmallow update. I want my band 12 activated so I can try using it again asy daily driver. The note4 is still a beast and longest I've used a phone as daily driver at 14+ months. Tmobile dropped the ball skipping the 5.1.1 update. Terrible terrible because 5.0.1 is half assed on Samsung and tmobile's part. 6.0 for marshmallow doesnt excite me because I'm still stuck on 4.4.4.because 5.0.1 is soooo bad.

The longest you've used a phone as a DD is 14 months and you're worried about the number of charging cycles you have on your MXPE? I'd understand if you're looking to get 3 years out of it.
I'm on day three, and so far it's been better for me too. Outstanding when left untouched, slightly better when using it. Doze is really that good, it's just hard to leave my phone alone long enough for it to work LOL. Performance was great for me on LP but is noticeably quicker on MM. I will say that after the initial OTA update, it wasn't what I expected so did a factory reset.. after the reset, was tons better. Beyond impressed!
I cracked 4hrs SOT for the first time since I got my MXPE thanks to MM. High accuracy location and Bluetooth on the whole time.
