Help! Shafted by Sony's incompetence and false waterproof claims! - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Repair # 1-20162112859
My phone was left on the table while it was raining last week (flaps fully closed of course) and when I picked it up to check something after a while I saw it was turning itself off. After that it never came back alive no matter what I tried. I noticed the camera lenses had fully frosted up so it was apparent that water had seeped in somehow.
I dried the phone for over a day but it simply didn't work! I sent it to Sony for warranty repair as I expected it to be covered since I used it under their advertised conditions and you expect it to take a bit of rain at the minimum.
To my utter horror they have come back as saying that because the phone has some other physical damage on the other side (it has a very slight bend in the left side middle which i don't recall it having) it means that the warranty is automatically void and they don't even need to investigate the water damage or the reason why the waterproofing failed via faulty flaps! But the failed flap is the one on the opposite/right side where the SIM and memory card go! It doesn't even make sense!
I have attached the repair centre (SBE Ltd. UK) sent pictures as evidence.
I assure you that the 2 are completely unrelated and on the opposite sides of the phone. They are simply using cause and effect and not scientific tests to rub their hands off my claim. There are plenty threads online showing that Sony Z3 phones have been failing at waterproofing. Given Sony's dropping sales they should at least help out their customers and stick by their principles and marketing claims.
To top up the experience the rude customer service even charge me £20 to ship phone back! Extortion?
I was a staunch Sony fan who owned the Xperia S, Z, Z2 and Z3 but my Sony story is well and truly over! I will go to a small consumer court as I will not give up because I am right! can anyone in UK advise what are my rights and course of action?
More shocked than disappointed.

is good to konw that sony isn't that good in customer help...too bad sony, too bad.
by the way yestarday a whashed my 4 days z3 in cold water (there where ice cubes in) and today i noticed that the camera and the led are covered by water bubbles.
now i hope that in few days water will evaporate. so sony's phones aren't all waterproof....i think they sell even phones that don't pass all the quality controls. so bad.

Luckily mine got replaced by Carphone Warehouse but this'll be my last Sony phone probably. Problem is I'm running out of manufacturers as they all end up disappointing in one way or another. In fact only Apple have failed to let me down with phones so far.
Good luck with the claim BTW. Small claims court is a good idea; no way will Sony bother to send anyone along to the hearing.

Good luck. So annoying when one of the best devices o the market has so little customer care behind it. I suggest you take it to twitter, seems to be the place where no company wants to tarnish their reputation.

WtF!?!?!? Where have you read physical caused damage is covered under warranty?!?!? Where?!?!?
I understand OP frustration, but it is obvious that some physical force bent phone and that caused waterproof fail, and that caused phone to die...

Well the bend could indeed compromise waterproofing.
But what service centre do to you still a **** move.

If the water was really cold, it will sublimated to the innards of the phone (duh)
Oh Sony quality control ist one of the best but Ive gone trough 3 z3 to find the present one without hardware defects. But all 3 of them survive a pool dive so I trust Sony with waterproofing (ironically)

I've got a Xperia Z3 Compact that has already been for repairs 3 times(1 with initial problem the other two was to fix their repair twice), unfortunately last week decided to clean the phone under water tap, and found that after a while the phone stopped working, water went through, so water proofing had gone after they repaired, right now still waiting for their escalation team to get my phone to go for repair. Not happy at all, I also own 3 other Sony phones Z, Z2,Z3 and my Z2 has gone to repairs last year but now I would not have 100% confidence that the phone is water proof. SBE UK LTD really has bad workmanship.

I had them repair a tablet which had bright spots and it came back with a dead pixel...so I was without a tablet for over a month and no compensation. What a bunch of dicks.

i think that cold water was the problem :silly: , i've tried in normal water and water doesnt get in.
hardware defects remain front and back glass aren't aligned to the frame as they shoud ( i went to a store and watched another z3 and it hadn't that problem. So quality controll isn't perfect for me...you can't sell a phone for 500+ euros and admit such imperfections.

I have the same problem of being denied, but instead because there are two small cracks on the glass.
See my thread on this; I'm going to try and force them into an arbitration in the hopes they'll service my phone instead of paying their lawyer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/help/small-crack-denied-service-unrelated-t3174528

Sony phones are not water PROOF but are water RESISTANT upto certain limits provided the flaps are tightly secured.
If phone gets damaged due to water then warranty is void. Sony is bluffing the customers with their water proof gimmicks which we should not fall prey. My phone got wet in rain but I was lucky to save it without going to worst service center chain of Sony. It did it myself using DIY videos carefully

Z3 Display Glass instable

I recieved my Z3 10 days ago.
It's superfast and the batterylife is awesome.
But 2 days ago, i noticed a damage in my Screen.
It's not big, but you can feel and see it..
I never dropped the phone, i even didn't use it often, because actually it's my secondary phone.
I never put it in my pocket with keys or money or anything.
So this morning i noticed a crack in the screen.
It's not big, too. But you can see it..
It looks like the screen is to big and instable and cracked.
This happened over night without any external influence.
Anybody got this too?
maybe it was the neighbors cat? never heard of a phone that screen mysteriously cracks itself. any pics?
.
Actually, the screen of the Z2 cracked spontaneously over the night some people. (From one corner to another.) Sony is not using Gorilla Glass but the Dragontrail, idk how good it is.

The amount of complaints are growing so quickly, all the chances of my buying a Z3 are fading.
I think it's time for a recall (that they will never do).

I feel the same way.. I went ahead and ordered an iPhone 6 plus to hold me over until I make up my mind and Sony decide to release price and availability on T-Mobile.
So here are some pictures.
It's a very small crack, it doesn't disturbs me but i think it isn't waterproof anymore...

I have an idea what can cause the crack.
When i hear Music with the speakers and full volume, the display vibrates a bit.
Can this be the reason?

Actually, it happens when the glass is under pressure / stress.
Gave my mum my Galaxy Nexus a half year ago. A week ago she put it in a stacker in the car with much space, but rubber on the ground. We drove an hour on the Autobahn, not even fast, suspension doesn't even move much because it's so flat.. still it broke into 100 pieces, I've never seen a cracked screen like that. It didn't even move. But to be fair, it fell to the ground very often. Like 20 times, without any damage. I guess it was a bit under stress / pressure and cracked at the slightest touch...
If the glass from the z3 is under stress because it's a faulty unit, it may even crack because of a fast changing temperature. Out of your pocket --> cold table? Could happen imo. That should be covered by the warranty imo. But that depends on the country where you live in.. In germany for example we have a relatively strong consumer protection. If you have absolutely no scratches on the phone, it should be obvious that this is not your fault.

I've had enough phones to know, they don't break from forces of nature or on their own. Hot to Cold, Cold to hot, faulty or not, doesn't happen.

You had some phones and they didn't break? Wow.
I had some cars that didn't break in years of usage. So cars can't break from forces of nature or on their own.
When there is constant pressure on the glass from the frame itself, it will break much faster or with less force.
But keep ignoring the facts and please, please never read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_glass_breakage
OP should read this, Sony repaired several Xperia Z1 phones for free:
http://www.nextpowerup.com/news/520...cked-glass-sony-might-repair-it-for-free.html
I've put together a Google forms survey to collect some objective breakage data:
Sony Xperia Z3 / Z3 Compact - Glass Survey
Please take some time to complete the survey whether you've experienced a breakage or not, it's important to have a complete set of data. You will be able to view the survey results after submitting the form.

There is no pressure from the frame, the glass fits inside it and rests on a lip. Hence why people have "gap issues". The actual frame puts no pressure on the glass under normal use as far as I can see. Unless of course the frame warps slightly, then I could see pressure building up at corners.

That's what I thought, too. And I had the same ideas like that famous "neighbor's cat", didn't take it for serious.
Till this morning, when I found a nice crack in the screen after charging the Z3 over night, listening to music prior to sleeping.
Crack starts at the right side if the upper speaker, extends down to the lower left edge of the phone. You can see and feel it, touchscreen still working, but with problems.
No drops, no weight placed on the Z3, no famous cats, not even mice.
Reason ? Unknown.
A bold guess: Vibrations. Z3 was resting with it's lower edge against a metal bar of the little table next to my bed, I had music playing quite loud. As the upper speaker causes the phone to vibrate noticeably, the constant vibrations plus the metal bar preventing the Z3 from moving might have caused the issue. And it's the upper speaker where the crack starts.
Oh, oh, Sony...
UPDATE
Just had a call with Vodafone Germany - they told me it's a KNOWN problem many users experienced. They also revealed it's a manufacturing fault, and there's an agreement with Sony regarding repair or exchange of affected devices.
Passi1909: Du bist also nicht allein.
Oh, oh, Sony...
UPDATE 2
Just had a chat with Sonymobile. Unfriendly as ever. OF COURSE they don't know anything about the problem. OF COURSE there are no manufacturing defects. OF COURSE they don't know anything about agreements with Vodafone.
So it's the typical Sonymobile Germany habit. (They also completely ignored thousands of bent Z2 Tablets a few months ago.)
Presently, I am speaking with Vodafone Germany again to find a proper solution. But I guess I'll say goodbye to the Z3, don't want to risk another failure.
Aha, interesting. NOW Vodafone Germany (different agent) claims there are NO agreements with Sony.
Strange world.
Trying the Sony repair service, now.
I can foresee a nice class lawsuit headed their way. Sony might go bankrupt in a couple of years the way they have lost the walkman wars (audio wars), and forget about Video wars too - Samsung and LG are really getting in there, and mobile wars - gone are the days where the P800, P900, P1000 (??) were the best phones ever to the fact that Apple now has a clear dominance there and Samsung has literally taken Sony out when it comes to Android.
I can imagine that it might be time to teach Sony a lesson of cheating people with 6 monthly devices that are "downgrades" in terms of "life".
Chefproll, start recording your calls and get things documented.
I wanted to finally buy a sony Smartphone on christmas, in this case the z3, but after I've heard a lot worse problems from this, I can probably forget it. pity, because i thought that the sony xperia z3 is the most prettiest and best Smartphone on the market

It's a nice, cute device which is real fun to play with.
But I just cannot live with the subzero camera - and with a crack in the display. Device now is unusable, touchscreen now behaves totally erratic.
I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy S5. I NEVER EVER wished to buy another Samsung device. But after my experience with the Z3's camera, the cracked screen (don't listen to music) and the attitude of the Sonymobile staff - goodbye, Sony.

Z3 unit with defect?

Bought a sony xperia z3 but after 16 days i looked in the back and the inside of the lens was all covered in dust.
It seems my unit had the back case a little loose, can't imagine what would happen if i had put the phone in the water. The phone is in Sony repair service and i and waiting for news.
Anyone else had this kind of problems?
Sounds like you got a manufacturer defect due to bad quality assurance on the phone. It happens with these phones (any phone really). From reading the forums, there are lots of bad quality assurance with this phone, including but not limited to gap issues, camera defect, corner pieces bulging out, light leak, etc. Good thing we have the warranty--hope either Sony fixes it, or give you a new one.

z3 water damage

ive read a lot about people having the same problem as i am, but no solution in my search....
soooo my phone fell into a sink of tap water for 10 secs,
i never open my ports since magnetic charging is pretty cool,
water completely ruined the screen (texting and calls still work thanks to my moto 360)
tmo says water damage is "not covered by warranty since there is water damage" even if it was sold to me as waterproof
sony says i can send it in to be evaluated but "it'll probably be a user failure if water is found in the device even if the ports were all closed"
i dont know what to do about this situation...
and my google searches arent helping :/
id hate to pay the insurance but all signs look to point in that direction...
Man if this stuff keeps happening I can see a Class Action Lawsuit coming. This is inexcusable...
Seriously, if you market a device as waterproof, you damn well better make sure it is waterproof. First thing I did with mine when I had some time was to jump into the service menu and test the barometer. Only then did I dunk it in water on purpose for a real test.
I say give call customer support, ask for a manager and escalate.
Same thing happened to me.. Went to T-Mobile, they looked at me like I was stupid and said there's nothing they could do. So I called Sony, they said they'd put it in a machine and test the waterproofing.
Send it in last week, still waiting to hear back. Rep on the phone said there's a 14 day turn-around.. Probably more at this time of the year. though.

i also did the barometer test when i got it, 3 days later, it fell in my soapy dishes and it was fine! i dont know why this time water leaked in
but sony has also taken my phone as with xxquicksh0txx and its going through the same thing
the catch here is they "dont replace the phone, only parts" so if there is something that cant be replaced it has to be returned to me and i have to pay the insurance
I have the same problem. I used the device in a pool and after 15 minutes the device screen went black. The touch screen still works, I see that there is movement with the unit but the screen does not show anything. In contact with assistance from Sony they asked me to send the device for a technical assistance shop. Here in Brazil said it takes up to 12 days to resolve the problem, unfortunately they only exchange defective parts.
I suppose yours is defective, technically if it happened despite all ports being closed.
Hello everyone!!! Happy new year!! I have the same problem with my phone. I wanted to take a picture underwater with my friends and the screen went black. I have submerged the phone before, but never took a picture. So I'm thinking that the seal at the camera button is the one that is faulty. Because te phone was good until I pressed the button. And every person that have had issues with the "waterproof" feature of this phone always say they have the flaps closed, and the vast majority of the problems happen after taking pictures underwater. Maybe if we all gather together we can make sony change our defective units.
I would, I just don't think we have enough water damaged phones to create a change
i got the exact same problem.
my screen is black and i can't see anything but the camera still works, i can launch it with the button and can take pics even with flash.
Maybe if we create a thread where people can post they have had problems with a Z3 not being waterproof, and asking people from different android related pages. We can do something. I think having more than 1 is enough to say this is a problem with the phone.
same sh**
My z3 wash it less than a minute in the sink it switched off I did eveverything to dry it but nothing happens when I plug it it starts to vibrate ?
Sent mine in a few weeks ago, just got an email with a tracking number saying it'll be here tomorrow...

Let us know how the phone goes when you receive it. Maybe water "resistance" should have been the marketing gimmick. :good:
Finally received the phone back today. There was a list of things they replaced, which I'll post later when I get home from work.
Everything looks good aside from a few things.
Some glue residue that it more visible between the screen and the housing, it's not bad and isn't very noticeable unless you're looking for it.
Looks like there's something at the bottom of the screen, I'm hoping it's some type of glue that isn't set yet and will eventually go away... If not I'll have to send it back again.
I will however be giving it a bath later tonight to be sure the waterproofing has been fixed.

Phone frames popped out?

Hello,
I've owned my Sony Xperia Z3 Device for about 3-4 months and i've always kept a Case onit (Tudia Case) Today i had dropped it, and noticed the frame next to the dock connection has popped out, I went to Tesco's they told me They wont replace it because it is a 'accidental damage' not a electrical fault however i've noticed i'm only getting 2-3 bars, Will Sony Replace this?
do you really think they should, given there's no real fault on their part - ask them for a quote for an out of warranty repair maybe.......

Well yeah, i mean paying for something that's £500 and then discovering it develops a metal deformation after a drop, That's ridiculous? Would it not irritate you if your device suddenly developed an issue where the metal frame stuck out and slightly bent? This is absolute bull****, Plus it is an issue as i've found it's got an impact on the Wifi/Network, Well that's my theory due to the fact my bars are sticking on 2/3 bars and WiFi is absolutely shocking right now, sometimes it wont even connect.
But in their eyes, you dropped it.

Bit stupid to be fair, Surely the warranty should cover Accidental damage & Technical faults, meh, Do you reckon if i buy insurance they'll replace it for me?
no because that would be fraud and it's generally illegal.....

How so?
(I'm talking about third party insurance such as protectyourbubble.co.uk
If i purchase insurance surely they would cover me? Afterall that's what i'm paying for....
EDIT:
Decided to stop wasting my time and tried some DIY, Managed to push the metal back in it's got a small ripple, and a few very hair line scratches which are unnoticeable, However if it bothers me toomuch I'll just purchase a new frame for the phone and assemble the device into that
I URGE EVERYONE TO PUT A FLIPCASE ON YOUR DEVICE TO PREVENT ANY BENDING/METAL POPPING!
It didn't 'develop' a "metal deformation", you dropped it.
"warranty should cover Accidental damage" Are you serious? If you accidentally crash your car, the person you bought it from should give you a new one?
"If i purchase insurance surely they would cover me?" Insurance is a product that is sold on a risk basis, where there is some risk that you might make a claim, not a 100% chance of you making a claim.
I'm not sure if you are trolling... Or if this is really the way you think things work.
it's not entirely dissimilar to the continuous play fraud where broken PS3s were being sourced via ebay, and then repaired improperly using sony's in-house policy - needless to say the scheme was closed off to new subscribers, and the bar was almost certainly raised for those seeking an independent guarantee repair due to the cynicism generated - whilst I agree that some repair quotes are excessive and some consumers are incorrectly asked to pay for a defect sony simply don't want to acknowledge, the two aspects I'm not comfortable with are (a) blatantly dishonest claims; and (b) hair trigger claims for a brand new replacement because their back panel is a billionth of a millimetre out with no clear indication of prejudice - there's no guarantee that sony will continue to produce handsets in the middle or the longterm, and people perhaps need to bear that in mind before flagging that they're on their fourth Z3 which they'll probably return immediately before the statutory guarantee expires..... general comment by the way, and not aimed at the OP who can take his own decisions.

quick question, does sony cover cracked screens? because i dropped my phone and the screen has a small crack but the touchscreen is completely not working now, its still under warranty so will they cover this normally? also, if not , how much does it cost to fix and will it lose its waterproofing if i replace it myself?? been looking on their site but they make it so awkward to find any useful info

Take it to a Sony store /centre if there's one you can get to and see what they say. It can totally depend on the person you see and the individual centre. If they feel bad for you they might do it, plus Z3 is "old" now so they will be looking (I expect) to get rid of the parts if they have a surplus so it's down to luck.
Don't act like you're willing to pay for it yourself as they get to bill Sony Warranty if it's covered anyway. Sony's market share is meh, so the last thing they need is more unhappy customers and losing repeat sales.
Then if its a serious no, and that's after a lot of fighting (if you're brave making a big fuss can break them ;p) then ask how much. Probably will be extortionate so if you can follow a guide to replace it yourself this will be better.
Water resistance is temperamental at best on these phones so you will likely lose it by replacing yourself, but how often do you really need it? Phones were fine before water proofing so it's just a niche feature not a necessity. Plus there are loads of people saying they lost their's after using warranty anyway.
Mine had the screen replaced for dead pixels (and they actually did a full refurbishment ports and all) in Russia (bought phone there as was cheap) and the pressure test for water proofing still works, but I haven't tested it since and don't really want to get it wet on purpose. So again depends on the service centre.
Hope my essay helps. Could all be useless. Just my experience with Sony
