Z3 unit with defect? - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bought a sony xperia z3 but after 16 days i looked in the back and the inside of the lens was all covered in dust.
It seems my unit had the back case a little loose, can't imagine what would happen if i had put the phone in the water. The phone is in Sony repair service and i and waiting for news.
Anyone else had this kind of problems?

Sounds like you got a manufacturer defect due to bad quality assurance on the phone. It happens with these phones (any phone really). From reading the forums, there are lots of bad quality assurance with this phone, including but not limited to gap issues, camera defect, corner pieces bulging out, light leak, etc. Good thing we have the warranty--hope either Sony fixes it, or give you a new one.

Second faulty Z3 - screen glitches while scrolling

Hello all,
So my first Z3 broke the day I got it after getting wet. Was slightly annoyed. Spent two days finding an EE store that had one in stock to replace it. Finally, today I got my replacement Z3.
However, my joy was quickly shadowed by what appears to be faulty graphics, though hopefully one of you folks can shine some light on this issue.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuMhRA5dmtk
I'm getting black lines and glitches while scrolling in any app like Facebook, Reddit or even the phone's settings menu. The lines seem to actually replace entire letters, as you can see in the image above. I'm also getting some odd behaviour with live wallpapers, though games and benchmarks seem to run fine.
Anyone have any ideas? I've tried resetting it. I really don't want to have to go through the pain of finding a third replacement...
Edit: The actual problem seems constrained to one line of pixels, and flickers as text scrolls through that line.

you should've taken it to sony repair center earlier maybe it's because of that replacement you did? why not try taking it to repair center now?
I'd take it back again. They should give you a brand new one if its within 28 days.
Sony repair centres I believe are hard to find in England, at least i've never seen one.
Your gpu or software relating to gpu is nackered. Take it back to EE, there are no sony centres in most UK now and they will repair not replace. Be reasonable with EE and they'll swap it out again but when they do, you sit in store and check everything, I did in o2 and found a fault but because I was in store they just immediately swapped. Better than any more trips and you know you've got a solid phone.

Completely agree with tihs. always open it in front of them and the fact you got a picture/ video as evidence will help your case.

Thanks! I took it back and they tried telling me it was just because of a faulty sim card... -_- The same EE advisor also told me that the processor and RAM is inside the sim card, so I just needed to get a new sim and the issue would be fixed.
I'm not even joking.
Anyway, I was adamant that he replaced the phone and he did. The new unit is a beaut.
Thanks guys!
My beloved z3 cracked itself, let in water and died at 8 months old. I decided to claim on my insurance as I couldn't face the ordeal of trying to convince Sony that i hadn't damaged (or dropped/twisted/ hit/taken to below 1.5m of water etc) my phone and being told that I had damaged it myself and am either a liar or an idiot. My insurance company took nearly 3 weeks to return the repaired phone which was still very faulty, no Bluetooth, no wifi, no calls and no MAC address. I re-returned it, got it back again with the same faults and eventually got a new Z3 only to find screen faults of overall flickering and intermittent screen blurring like an old tv set.
I'll have to send this one back too, another week without a phone and another installation.
It is so sad that the Z3 which was by far my favourite phone so far and was hailed by Sony as robust and waterproof is so disappointing and fragile in real life. BTW my phone had always been in a case with screen protectors.

[Q] Got two new Z3, both have build quality issues

Hello everyone,
I came from a Z1, the mic started malfunctioning and I could only be when using handsfree on it.
So I ordered a Z3 from my carrier, got it shipped by mail. When I received it, the SIM/SD card flap wouldn't close properly, so I phoned customer service and got a replacement Z3 mailed to me. The next one I got (received it 3 days ago) looked fine, until today when I took it out of my front pocket. I heard a poping sound, I had earphones plugged into it. I could see the back glass starting to come off. I'd say whole top left 1/4 of the phone is not glued on anymore.
I really liked the Z1 and the Z3 as well as features and look go, but I am now getting unsure about getting this phone. Am I just unlucky and got two poorly built units, or are they mostly all bad?
JF
You're not the only one, no. My sister bought a Z3 and the left side of the back panel (looking at the back) is not properly attached either, and is flexed outwards. After a small amount of use its to the point now where it is sort of flapping about and she needs to use a case.
My girlfriends Z3 went into a small amount of fresh water to take one picture and moments later the screen went black and died completely. After a few minutes googling i found many other people having the same issues with the Z3's.
Just bad luck bud, get it exchanged while you can. Carriers can be real douche after 7 days or whatever depending your location.
Nothing wrong with my z3 even though its second hand. *fingers crossed*
Just got my 3rd Z3, this one the flaps look fine, the back glass seems glued correctly and it passes the pressure test... The downside is, the box was sealed when I got it, but it was missing the screen protectors. Oh well... just my luck. I'll peel off the ones from the previous one before I ship it back, until I order some new ones.

Xperia Z3 dosent come with screen protectors, so this is not a flaw.
Also you was just unlucky. I bought mine one month ago, i hadnt a single problem with it so far.

It may be.
The first two Z3's I got had screen protectors included in the box. The last one didn't...
Anyway, the last Z3 will go back as it is no longer working. Over the weekend, I was at a friend's batchelor party and we were doing indoor surfing. I was filming him from aside and the phone took a few water splashes, and the display started flickering and died within a few minutes. I am terribly dissapointed in this phone. I really enjoyed my Z1, with all it's glitches and freezing. The Z3's performance was great, it seems it's just the build quality. I had bough my wife a Z3 a few months ago, as she likes water sports and she liked how I could use my Z1 at the beach/lake, but now she is scared of even getting some rain on her's, and we can't return it for another one since we're over the buyer's remorse period.
It's a shame there are no other waterproof phones out there (besides Samsungs).

Buy SAMSUNG and do with that indoor surfing.
Now that's some really bad luck. I heard the Z3 is less than perfect when it comes to build quality but this is just insane. Mine works well and is waterproof but has a dead pixel (I think it's covered under warranty but I don't feel like going to the service center). I hope you get one that works. Other than that if you want something with less than flagship specs there are plenty of rugged phones to choose from. Buy one of those for watersports and buy a different flagship for daily use. I heard the Samsung S6 is supposed to be pretty good.

Chill, I was just giving OP my point of view. He seems to be very disappointed with Sony but he wants a waterproof phone, his best option is to buy a rugged phone for watery outdoors and a different flagship for daily dry use. I like my Z3 more than the S6, but if my Z3 were to suddenly explode and make me get buyer's remorse I would most likely buy the S6 which is the second best phone on the market after Z3 imo.

Ok, no problem.
I think I'll keep the Z1 around for watersports. It still runs fine, the only problem is the mic is busted on it. I was thinking of using it with a sports band to put on my forearm and use as a GPS while riding my motorcycle. I'll just get a regular, non-waterproof phone instead.
I've had a Galaxy S4 in the past. The hardware is great, but I don't like the UI and all the software they load it with. I might look into the M9, since it seems like the one of the last ones with SD card support. Anyone has comments on it?

Help! Shafted by Sony's incompetence and false waterproof claims!

Repair # 1-20162112859
My phone was left on the table while it was raining last week (flaps fully closed of course) and when I picked it up to check something after a while I saw it was turning itself off. After that it never came back alive no matter what I tried. I noticed the camera lenses had fully frosted up so it was apparent that water had seeped in somehow.
I dried the phone for over a day but it simply didn't work! I sent it to Sony for warranty repair as I expected it to be covered since I used it under their advertised conditions and you expect it to take a bit of rain at the minimum.
To my utter horror they have come back as saying that because the phone has some other physical damage on the other side (it has a very slight bend in the left side middle which i don't recall it having) it means that the warranty is automatically void and they don't even need to investigate the water damage or the reason why the waterproofing failed via faulty flaps! But the failed flap is the one on the opposite/right side where the SIM and memory card go! It doesn't even make sense!
I have attached the repair centre (SBE Ltd. UK) sent pictures as evidence.
I assure you that the 2 are completely unrelated and on the opposite sides of the phone. They are simply using cause and effect and not scientific tests to rub their hands off my claim. There are plenty threads online showing that Sony Z3 phones have been failing at waterproofing. Given Sony's dropping sales they should at least help out their customers and stick by their principles and marketing claims.
To top up the experience the rude customer service even charge me £20 to ship phone back! Extortion?
I was a staunch Sony fan who owned the Xperia S, Z, Z2 and Z3 but my Sony story is well and truly over! I will go to a small consumer court as I will not give up because I am right! can anyone in UK advise what are my rights and course of action?
More shocked than disappointed.
is good to konw that sony isn't that good in customer help...too bad sony, too bad.
by the way yestarday a whashed my 4 days z3 in cold water (there where ice cubes in) and today i noticed that the camera and the led are covered by water bubbles.
now i hope that in few days water will evaporate. so sony's phones aren't all waterproof....i think they sell even phones that don't pass all the quality controls. so bad.
Luckily mine got replaced by Carphone Warehouse but this'll be my last Sony phone probably. Problem is I'm running out of manufacturers as they all end up disappointing in one way or another. In fact only Apple have failed to let me down with phones so far.
Good luck with the claim BTW. Small claims court is a good idea; no way will Sony bother to send anyone along to the hearing.
Good luck. So annoying when one of the best devices o the market has so little customer care behind it. I suggest you take it to twitter, seems to be the place where no company wants to tarnish their reputation.

WtF!?!?!? Where have you read physical caused damage is covered under warranty?!?!? Where?!?!?
I understand OP frustration, but it is obvious that some physical force bent phone and that caused waterproof fail, and that caused phone to die...

Well the bend could indeed compromise waterproofing.
But what service centre do to you still a **** move.

If the water was really cold, it will sublimated to the innards of the phone (duh)
Oh Sony quality control ist one of the best but Ive gone trough 3 z3 to find the present one without hardware defects. But all 3 of them survive a pool dive so I trust Sony with waterproofing (ironically)
I've got a Xperia Z3 Compact that has already been for repairs 3 times(1 with initial problem the other two was to fix their repair twice), unfortunately last week decided to clean the phone under water tap, and found that after a while the phone stopped working, water went through, so water proofing had gone after they repaired, right now still waiting for their escalation team to get my phone to go for repair. Not happy at all, I also own 3 other Sony phones Z, Z2,Z3 and my Z2 has gone to repairs last year but now I would not have 100% confidence that the phone is water proof. SBE UK LTD really has bad workmanship.

i think that cold water was the problem :silly: , i've tried in normal water and water doesnt get in.
hardware defects remain front and back glass aren't aligned to the frame as they shoud ( i went to a store and watched another z3 and it hadn't that problem. So quality controll isn't perfect for me...you can't sell a phone for 500+ euros and admit such imperfections.
I have the same problem of being denied, but instead because there are two small cracks on the glass.
See my thread on this; I'm going to try and force them into an arbitration in the hopes they'll service my phone instead of paying their lawyer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/help/small-crack-denied-service-unrelated-t3174528
Sony phones are not water PROOF but are water RESISTANT upto certain limits provided the flaps are tightly secured.
If phone gets damaged due to water then warranty is void. Sony is bluffing the customers with their water proof gimmicks which we should not fall prey. My phone got wet in rain but I was lucky to save it without going to worst service center chain of Sony. It did it myself using DIY videos carefully

Z3 - Fake screen?

I recently dropped my (2 day old) Z3, cracked the screen - Sent it off to an independent repair shop. They claim they use only OEM parts - However on return it looked 100% but when I powered it up I noticed the colours looked washed out and dull - A side by side comparison with my z3 tablet showed a huge difference.
Does this sound like they used a non genuine part? How else could i tell?
try to compare with another z3 and if the display still looks like a fake part go to the shop with both phones and tell them that you think that your display is broken.
ask them to replace it.
if the solution is still same ask for your money back and try another shop.
I've compared against a compact and a tablet and the colours don't look right. Any other way of proving the point? They have agreed to take it back blaming their supplier of course, but all their advertising claims they use nothing but genuine parts

Not entirely, i guess just show them the tablet colours and your Z3 Colours, if they provided a statement and it was false you're obligated for a refund/replacement, let them take it back and repair it.

Bottom speaker defect

Yeah well, was very happy with the device until today.
Bottom speaker produces horrible crackling sound when playing any sound. It's just defect from now to then.
Thanks to Amazon i can now send it for repair and am already sure that there will be anything like scratches, bad gaps or whatever...
Not even speaking of IP rating.
Did anyone else have a defect speaker? Because after that short time and rarely using it this is rather strange.
Actually i'm pretty pissed about Sonys quality. Always thought it was good, but some days ago my wife's X compact got a defect on screen and now this. Used htc since the original Desire and never had anything. Seems switching manufacturer is a bad idea
ALL manufacturers have defects. Getting my XZ2C next week, but issues like this are standard for any manufacturer and shouldn't put you off any brand. Either get your phone repaired, or deal with the crackling.
My HTC M7 failed once. My HTC M9 failed twice. My HTC 10 has also failed twice and on the second repair they scratched the backlight on the Recents button. Their quality control is the same. Such is life. Getting worked up about it won't solve anything.

Yes I also have a defect bottom speaker. Severe crackling above about 75% volume in the mid-ranges frequency-wise. I've owned it maybe three or four weeks? I'm thinking I may have to return the phone. I think you're perfectly justified in being pissed - I'm a bit pissed too - this is a $600 phone and getting speaker crackling this early in is pretty ridiculous. Maybe it's just a particle of dust/debris that's made it into the speaker but nevertheless there seems to be an issue with this phone's design and/or manufacturing as I've seen a couple other posts about this problem on Sony's site.
My Axon 7 had this issue as well but the speaker grill could be pretty easily cleaned with a sim ejector and that always resolved it. But the XZ2c seems to have a bit more of a tight area around the speaker which might be nearly impossible to clean without removing the screen assembly.

You can watch the xz2c teardown video on yt where you can see the internals. You can also see why they have to disassemble half of the phone for repair. There is a channel leading from the "gap" outside to the speaker inside. Regarding it is ip68 no piece of dust should make its way inside the speaker itself.
Apart from that i know how a broken speaker sounds and this one is broken. So either it is just a piece of s*** or they are powering it wrong. Can't remember ever having used it at 100% and even if it should be able to deal with it.
I bought a LG G6 as temporary replacement because it is ridicously cheap (paid 315€) and will send in my XZ2c tomorrow.
And while it is bigger and SD821 is noticeable after 835/845 you know what? It is also a good device...
Haven't decided yet if i'll keep the Sony after repair. Well first it has to be repaired (without damage).
