Hi,
Last weekend, the front of my Z3 developed a hairline crack across the front while it was in my pocket.
I used it at the shops, put it in my pocket, walked home (5 mins) and took it out, and noticed it had what I thought was a scratch on the front. I wasnt bothered as it has a screen protector.
When i tried to use it, the touch screen was unresponsive, and when i turned it slightly sideways it became apparent there was a hairline crack in the glass.
The phone is in /perfect/ condition. Not a mark on it.
It seems from some googling that this is a common problem.
Took it into Car Phone Warehouse today, and they are sending it off to Sony to see if they will repair it. The Geek Squad guy said his did the same.
Sods law that this happens just as the Lollipop release finally happens /
Anyway, will update when I hear back from them as to if they are gonna fix it

I dont know for you. But i used mine as car GPS navigation for 6 hours directly exposed to sun and it was really HOT. Dont have a single mark on it.
Also i wear few jeans which have tight pockets, and it didnt made damage.
Maybe you were just out of luck, or you just saw it in that moment.
Its up in the air as to the cause of the mysterious xperia cracking. Some say its thermal, some say its a chemical pollutant in the screen. Hopefully sony will do the right thing and fix it for me.
I dont think its thermal in this case - the only temperature variation it got between fine and cracked was body temperature vs. uk april indoor temp which is basically no difference. It survived winter in the north of england OK

Maybe just a bad luck. I hope you will fix it and enjoy as soon as possible. Because since i bought this phone, i dont have anything against it.
same happened to mine.
Just by carrying it in jacket. Now the screen has a hairline upside down and sensitivity in the screen is lost, except for the upper left side, so useless.
Any more people with issues like this?

keys never go in that pocket, that would be very unconfortable to reach. Keys would do screen scratches though, and I have none, a perfect shiny screen, just with a long hairline upside down.
When I get my fixed screen I will certainly use one of those plastic screen protectors.

You had to be that guy, the denier, the corporate defender. Self cracking screens do happen.
Happened to my Z2 which Sony repaired under warranty. They wouldn't do that if they weren't responsible. In my experience any singular cracks like those seen on my handset will be accepted by Sony for repair. Any spider web cracks they won't as thats consistent with impact damage.
My Z3 has tempered glass front and skin applied to the rear. I also have insurance covering damaged screens with a reasonable excess if required. I would not advise anyone to buy an Xperia Z device without also doing so.

There are people with the same problem that you, and warranty did not covered it, so...be careful next time with your phone.

Mine defo went in a pocket by itself (keys in same pocket ? Obvious bad idea). I also had screen protector that came in box with phone and after market silicone case.

Yes because thanks to people willing to keep siding with the corporate profit makers over their fellow consumers and the lack of willingness for major tech news and mainstream media outlets to cover this properly and apply relevant pressure to Sony means that many of the people I've read about being refused service are from outside countries such as the UK with weighty consumer protection laws. Thankfully with shows run like Watchdog on the BBC and other consumer champions we have more luck fighting this.
I believe consumers who can show pictures of their phones with the hairline cracks over Sony. I know who has most to lose.

I don't have to prove I didn't drop it, seeing as it broke a mere 6 weeks into ownership.

Ok, useful post for everybody.
It' s always good to know your rights.
That's bad luck man, sorry to hear it.
Yeah most people that are regular XDA users take good care of their devices, so I don't doubt for a second this is due to some manufacturing defect.
I am curious though to everyone this has happened to:
Were you using stamina mode by any chance?
Was it hot outside that day, or exposed to heat regularly?
Did you have your screen set on automatic brightness?
Did you test the phone for water proofing?
I'm just asking this because I'm wondering if heat and/or pressure played a factor.
Regardless, it's definitely Sony's responsibility to repair/replace the device free of charge.
They Fixed It
PLeased to report that I put it into Car Phone Warehouse for repair, and they sent it to Sony, who fixed it for free (and flashed Lollipop to boot!).
Very happy, and very happy I have my SD card back (due to Lollipop)

KitKat was actually released as a "security only" update. Google implemented SD card restrictions with the KitKat update after scrutiny over it's "lax" security by people such as Phil Schiller (Apple marketing exec) and others. This scrutiny had a snowball effect which eventually led to the SD card frustration we've all dealt with on KitKat.
While the Lollipop update addresses some of these frustrations, it is FAR from perfect and still causes problems for many users.
Following the locked bootloader rooting guide by G-Face (so you can keep your DRM keys) and then running SDFix from the Play Store, resolves all issues resulting from the SD card access issue (for both KitKat and Lollipop).

IMHO SD card access is perfect in Lollipop (apart from needing specific support - would be nice to externally say " I want obscure program X that isnt lollipop aware (eg. rsync in my case) to have access, but what is have allows dropsync and ES File explorer access, which is good enough for me...
Im scared to root phones now, since a lot of companies deny warranty if that is done. Illegal or no in the EU its a fight i dont have time to have...

Got bitten tonight
Went out to eat with my family this evening, as we were leaving, I tried to unlock my phone to check email, but the touch screen was non-responsive. After closer inspection I discovered several hairline cracks on the screen. What's really odd is the phone was fine when we sat at the table, evening doing a quick search for my father in law. I put the phone in my front pocket by itself. 30 minutes later the screen was cracked., I'm hoping T-Mobile or Sony will help me out, otherwise I'm done with both.

Hi guys.
Basically my problem is, today I was getting my MOT done, waiting around. Was using my phone to text, it was working fine.
Put my phone in my empty pocket, 2 minutes later, felt it vibrate and noticed I had a call coming in, but also the screen had a hairline Y shaped crack in it on the inside at the bottom.
No drops, knocks or nothing and its in a protective silicone case. I'm now having to basically hope that Sony believe me and let me know if its warranty repairable other than this its £50 - £60 charge for something that I did not do. Assuming they accuse me of dropping it.
Ive checked the net and it seems im not the only one this has happened to (albeit on other types of phones too).
Its only 4 months old from new, its a PAYG phone and had no insurance eek: I know).
What ground to I have to stand on if any at all ?
Bumped - Any ideas people ?
Has this ever happened to you guys ?

Thats more in reference to the exterior housing cracking, where as mine is the inside screen with zero exterior damage. But I suppose I see your point. Maybe someone has the same problem there due to heat....
If it's internal damage I don't see any reason for sony to reject your warranty. AFAIK if it was due to user mishandling then an exterior damage would be done before interior damages happen.

Thanks man, this is my view on it too. Although I imagine it wont be sony's.
The phone is only 4 months old and there is the general wear and tea on the case,the odd mark where its in and out the pocket and some scratches on the screen protector. But apart from that its immaculate. There is no significant damage on the case that would suggest It smashed of the ground.
If they tell me its broke because its been in my pocket then.... well, who doesn't put their phone in their pocket ?

Just thought id Update... Sony fixed it for free for me. Support I received was amazing TBF. New screen and its working good as new.
I purchased my White 32BG N5 on the 31st of October, probably the very first batch. It has always been in a case. Yesterday I took it out to clean out the sides from dust as the case is a pretty thick one and the openings allow dust to get in. I noticed a hairline crash that goes from the SIM tray opening to the screen. I called up Google Support and they advised that physical issues with the phone are not covered under the warranty, the same thing was told to me by a supervisor.
I then reached out to LG Support, they advised that I have to ship the phone in and pay for shipping, and be without a phone for up to 7 days.
See attached image of the crack and let me know if you have any suggestions or heard about this issue. I am fraint that more and more crash are going to show up on this phone now.
It was probably stress crack. Case or not any stress to the phone can cause it to crack since it's plastic. Just my opinion.

No why would it be? Stress cracks are caused by external stress to whatever was cracked like putting it in tight pockets for to long or sitting on it on accident or trying to take it out of a tight case and using to much force etc.. And warranty only covers defects with the internals or manufacturing. If you would have caught that crack the day you bought it you might have gotten them to replace it since it was same day but after so much time physical damage is usually user caused.

Usually electronic devices such as cellphones are made with regular usage in mind. Like having the phone in your pocket, putting a case on and off. If the phone is unable to handle the stress of everyday use that would mean that there is something wrong with it.
I had the Galaxy Nexus for about 2 years, the Nexus S for 1 year with the same type of usage if not heavier and never had issues with "stress cracks"
I did own an iPhone 3GS and that also had similar type of cracks, all over the body of the phone. It was replaced btw, out of warranty too.
Also the term "stress cracks" usually refers to something that is created and then needs to settle in. Such as a foundation of a house. This is not the case for smart phone devices. Plastic housing does not need to settle in.
I looked up the warranty for the phone. On the first page of the warranty details (page 16 of the doc) this is what they say:
4. The external housing and cosmetic parts shall be free of defects at the time of shipment and, therefore, shall not be covered under these limited warranty terms.

So I guess they dont care if the phone starts cracking on it's own, or there are other cosmetic issues with the device. That is kind of sad...

Same here.. Same Model too. I have a hard shell case that I have been using.. I took it off yesterday to make sure there was no dust buildup, and noticed the crack. Same hairline crack from sim card to screen.

How could I crack the side of the phone like that by sitting on the phone?
1. The screen would crack
2. Both sides would crack
3. The crack would be all the way down the side. But it only goes to the sim entrance.
Also, never put the phone in my back pocket, its way too bulky with the case one it.
And, there is another person with a hardshell case who just added that they have the same issue on a White Nexus 5.
PS "Mate"? I'm an adult, if I screw up i take the responsibility, but if the stuff that I pay for has a defect I expect the party providing support to take care of the issue.

I've got the exact same crack on my Nexus. It's never been dropped, never been in a back pocket, and never been subjected to any bending at all. I contacted Google and they told me to contact LG. I've sent LG pictures and I'm waiting for them to get back to me about it.
The fact that we have a number of people reporting the exact same problem points to a defect in the build of the phone itself.
(That's not a crack on the screen in the photo, it's a white dog hair )

I posted this about 2 days ago, and we have 3 people reporting the same issue.
I have a feeling this is an issue with the white model of the phone only as the plastic that is on the sides of the phone is different then the Black or Red models.
I wish more people with the crack were aware of this post and would comment here with pictures. I am sure that Google would see that there seems to be a trend and start doing something about it. If you guys can share this so people realize that this is a defect, and maybe we can do something about this.

The cracks along with the peeling letters off the back is making me greatly question the build quality of this device. It seems to be falling apart and it has only been 6 months.

The phone can't crack itself. There must have been pressure put on that side while holding on to something (with phone in hand) or may be the case which y'all used was too tight that it split the side when you people applied pressure on it or while it was in a tight pocket. Reasons can be many.
It will be a miracle if LG actually accepted these devices and replaced them(or the casing) free of cost but I sincerely doubt it.
Edit: I know a friend of mine who had a HTC One m7 of which he took utmost care. The phone was in his pocket and while he was walking his thigh hit a corner of a desk. He didn't realize it ATM but when he took out his mobile while he received a call he saw that there was a dent on the back. Obviously he was hell bent on saying that he didn't drop the device nor did he threw it around but suddenly he remembered that time when that desk hit his thigh.
So what I'm saying is that such small things could have been the reason for the hairline cracks on your device.

I've got the letters peeling problem too on the White. I just put a skin from Dbrand on the back to cover the lettering.

You are comparing a dent on the back of a metal phone to a hairline crack in spots that it would be almost impossible to induce a crack of that nature even if one tried.
1. The case sides are actually pretty loose, I can easily bend them away from the sides, top and bottom of the phone
2. If the phone was hit on something while in a case the case would absorb that impact
2.a. I have seen drop tests of this phone, the screen shatters, the sides stay intact, no cracks. In other drop tests in a case the phone is completely fine, no cracks on the screen or the body. So the statements that removing the phone from the case or the case being too tight are complete BS.
3. LG's Warranty does state that they don't cover cosmetic issues. I know this, I have this info in previous posts. My point is that this is a manufacturing defect, and it should be covered by the manufacturer. I believe there are laws that protect the consumer against this kind of BS.
4. Also, per warranty info, Google is responsible for servicing these devices if they are purchased from the Google Play Store. See my previous posts.
I will make a video of my phone and case and the condition of both when I get home from the office today post it on YouTube and get a link in to this thread.

After reading this thread I just had to go look. I have one above the Simtray. Not as prominent as you guys, but its there. I still have the tape on the sides in a cruzerlite TPU case. I have noticed myself sitting on the phone sometimes in my pocket jumping in the truck. Will always be in a case not that worried / (OCD) Oh well you should see the N4. The dude I bought that from replaced the battery and didnt take out the sim tray.
I wanted to create this topic because I am curious and because I see many people asking if this phone isn't too fragile or has QC issues. I believe that the people with problems are the vocal minority but the best way to find out is to have a poll.
So, have you found any faults or is your device right as a little (Xperia) ray of sunshine?

1st phone: defective camera (purple noise)
2nd phone: USB flap misalign when closed
3rd and current phone: so far so good
My first phone's screen had an area in a line from top to bottom, right of centre that had no touch sensitivity. The area was about .5 cm wide.
I couldn't touch anything on the line or drag anything across it.
I contacted Amazon.co.uk and they sent me a new one right away. They also let me hang onto the defective one until the replacement arrived without charging me.

My phone is perfect. The USB flap is a teeny tiny bit, like a fraction of a milimeter, misaligned but the seal is intact, I do not intent to take my phone into the pool anyway and thought it was pointless to go through the hassle of returning an otherwise flawless phone for something half of my friends can't see when I point it out. My carpenters eye is ridiculously accurate so meh.
The back glass scratched a few hours after removing cover. Ive only has the phone for 2 days and Bell wont take it back with damages. The phone has only ever been in my otherwise empty pocket...
Anyone else experiencef this? I thought both were gorilla glass.
I don't think the back is as scratch resistant as the front, as I too have very minor scratches on the back, using front and back tempered glass protects now.
My unit only has a slight annoyance which is the headphone jack is wobbly. It has about less than 1mm of wiggle room. I can see a gap between the metal body and the Jack. The Jack works perfectly currently.
Don't know if it's worth bringing to the Sony store, or to just seal it with some super glue or something. :/

That's what I'm assuming. I could also hear air bubbles when squeezing my device... :/
It worked fine for a while, I even rinsed it off in the sink after exposing it to the water. (It was fresh water, but there were fish in it) No more than 6 inches submerged for like 30 seconds. Was going through the pictures and the touchscreen just stopped working.

In reality, from what I have read, some are not waterproof out of the box. So sad to hear this when Sony advertised this phone as waterproof. Before submerging, did you try the water test via software (pressure sensor)?

Yes(Although I don't really think the test proves the waterproofness), I had also had it completely submerged for 10 minutes when I bought the device.

This really sucks because there is no way we can tell if it is waterproof until we really submerge it. I am going to avoid submerging mine at all cost.

I had some problems with this new phone.
1: no nfc working
2: horizontal section from 9 to 177 of the touchscreen doesnt work properly
So i get a third replacement by SFR (in France) and I think I get a fully working Z3.
I love the advertisement of Sony for ils Z3 in France : demand perfection (exigez la perfection)!
I've had 2 copper Z3's. First one, front glass shattered whilst in my front left pocket, nothing else in the same pocket. I've carried all my phones in the same manner and never had an issue. Also had the pink spot issue.
Second phone has 2 stuck pixels.
I really like the phone. They just don't like me
Got a replacement from T-Mobile, the camera button seems to be stuck.. Only works like 20% of the time. Instead of feeling like a dual stage button, it's just a single press with no tactile feel.
When in the camera app it either does nothing, or is stuck trying to focus repeatedly.
Has the same issue with the glass coming up on the back as well. Definitely feels and sounds as if adhesive it being "pulled apart" per se.
Also, the flaps seem to be a little mis-aligned.
My T-Mobile must have gotten a bad batch...
If you have a misaligned usb flap, will replacing the flap with a spare one fix it or is it an issue with the frame?
First one I got in store, noticed the power and volume up buttons were stuck and wouldn't click, the next one's speakerphone didn't work, now this one's camera button is stuck and doesn't have the two stage shutter and can't take photos in the stock app. I still prefer the phone over any other currently out.
Edit: I got mine through t-mobile.
UPDATE: The camera button has come unstuck and works fine now, though it does get a little stuck still.
Two display/screen issues :
- Screen burn-in all the time : status bar and home button more particularly. I strongly suspect a defective screen : I send my Z3 back to Sony, and they did... a software update ! I'm kind of curious about what they did exactly because my phone was completely updated. Of course, it didn't solve anything...
- Strange parasite lines surrounding text lines. Probably a software issue. I'm waiting Lollipop to see what it gonna do on my phone.
Sent mine in for a screen repair in the USA. Its a d6603 international version that is rooted and an unlocked boot loader stock. They just informed me that they cannot fix due to it not having the correct software and it not being a US phone.
Just wanted to follow up regarding my cracked screen from the drop from my pocket to the linoleum laundry room floor. Phone was sent in to LG for diagnosis and they showed great service by quickly responding back (4 days from sending the phone from Idaho to Texas). Unfortunately I don't think they did too much analysis as their diagnosis was a canned response that said "the malfunction was caused by physical damage or water/liquid damage which is not covered under warranty."
It wasn't a malfunction. I dropped it from pocket level and the screen splintered. From all of the advertising and 3rd party drop test videos I've seen, when properly built the phone withstands WAY more than one 3 foot drop. But whatever. I acknowledge it was my butterfingers that made the drop.
At any rate, my dilemma is do I pay the $146/$153 for the repair/repair and refurbish charge or do I DIY with the digitizer I ordered from a 3rd party? I know going forward that unfortunately this will be the last LG I own. With so many other options from Moto, Samsung, Sony, Huawei, etc companies need to own their advertising if they want my cheddar.
Anyone have any experience with aftermarket parts? I don't want to have a mutt phone that has functionality issues.

Just wanted to say that, Samsung, and Motorola are the same way. Prior to buying this phone, my nexus6 was lying, in an Otterbox, with a tempered glass screen protector, on my truck console. I called my wife on my way home, screen was fine, set it down, drove about four miles, picked it up when I got home and the screen was split with one crack, from the top left to the bottom right corner... Nothing touched it the whole way home, and with the Otterbox, the screen doesn't touch the padded console lid anyway. Needless to say, t-mobile's insurance company, Assurant, is worthless... 12 dollars a month for insurance, and 175 to have it fixed. Called Motorola, they'll fix it for the exact same price...? So needless to say, bought my v10 so I have a phone till I fix the nex myself, dropped all the insurance, on all my plans, (4 lines $48 less a month) and covered them for $20 a month on square trade, with a he'll of a lot cheaper deductible. Sorry for the long winded response, but until a manufacturer can guarantee screens won't break (new moto?) all companies will treat you like this...

That's insane. See as business owner, I completely get and understand company policies. But I also understand that inevitably there are exceptions to the policies. Like when you drive home with your phone in an otter box in your console only to find the screen cracked. Or when you have a "military grade drop test" phone that falls 3 feet and splinters the screen like in my case. Clearly my device wasn't built with the same standards or tolerances as those shown in all the drop test videos, so as an exception, step up and fix the device. When we make 250 sandwiches and one person calls in and data the bread was a little dry, I'm refunding him and buying his next meal no questions asked. I don't care if nobody else complained about the bread, you take care of the exception.
I get that mobile devices aren't sandwiches, but the principle holds true. But I guess if every company is doing the same thing, nobody needs to step up.

I think the problem is that there's no way to prove that he dropped that phone only from a couple of feet or that he had a heavy duty case on it.
If companies were replacing screens under warranty every time someone broke their, they'd be out of business.
I had bought a warranty for 70 bucks through Sony for my z3 phone and had it replaced when the screen cracked. Wish LG offered a similar warranty for this phone.

I agree entirely with your premise, despite the fact that I believe that most people are honest and don't try and unnecessarily hose companies. However, in my case, what's the point in them "examining" the device to determine if it's a defect or was caused by me if they really don't even look? My V10 was less than a week old and didn't have even the slightest nick or flaw anywhere on the phone or around the edges. I feel like if they truly inspected it they could actually be able to determine if it was caused by the actual drop, excessive dropping, OR a build quality/construction problem. Given that mine looks brand new apart from the splintered screen maybe they conclude that it's a build issue. Maybe someone else sends in theirs and there are scratches, dings, and nicks around the outside and they conclude that the phone was probably dropped multiple times. Am I making sense?
Yeah, in the past just did a monthly warranty extension with Verizon. When my wife and I upgraded I looked at what was offered and reviews for Assurance. I got her Apple Care+ for her iPhone, and went Square Trade for my V10.
And that's why LG has fine print while they make their durability claims.
This is why I use tempered glass screen protectors, I'd rather break the screen protector than damage the glass on the phone a $10-20 expense vs $150-$300 depending on the route you take to fix the phone glass. I've replaced the damaged glass smartphones in most cases the glass is attached with UV loca to the screen and if you can manage to separate the glass from the screen without damaging it you can pay only about $25 for new glass off of ebay, but I assure you it is not an EASY thing to do for a novice. Keep in mind if you pay the $8-9 a month for the phone insurance you are basically wasting $192-$216 over two years if you don't use it. [/rant ]

If you've never replaced the screen with the digitizer before You NEED to watch videos on youtube and read anything on ifixit for the tools you might need to buy to disassemble the phone. You are lucky right now prices start at $83 and go up, but make sure you buy the correct model for YOUR phone screen with digitizer can be different between phone model from different carriers.. And if you are uncomfortable doing this yourself buy the part and try to find a local shop(usually a third party cell phone shop) that will do the work for you. Here's an ebay link

I purchased the digitizer but in the end I had LG do the repair because they would warranty it. I didn't want to risk dorking up a $650 device. I probably should have tried as it would be nice to have that skill. Maybe I'll drop the phone next week and then I'll get to do it ha ha. Definitely going to throw a screen protector on...especially given that I'm convinced mine was poorly assembled in the first place causing it to shatter after one small drop.

One of my clients just informed me that a crack on the top left of the touchscreen of his S7 Edge caused the entire touchscreen to be completely inoperable. The entire screen was flickering like crazy. BE WARNED. I have not heard of anything like this before. Touchscreens are usually usable even if the entire screen is cracked.

Duh...
It all depends onthe way the phone falls. There are no proven examples that screen A will always survive because iti s only cracked a little and screen B will go dead at whatever conditions. Only probability and nothing else.

It's possible on any device. Like mentioned above, chances are that the way it dropped (force, speed, angle, etc) damaged the hardware and that the screen crack as nothing to do with it.
All in all, be careful gents, devices aren't indestructible

So I guess the moral of the story is, don't drop the phone, Of course nobody ever plans on dropping their phone. But if you are trying to say that if you drop the phone then the screen may break, and if the screen breaks then the touchscreen may fail, that's not news to anyone.

I once dropped my s7 edge and only once and it stopped working completely. I'll remember next time I'm 30ft up to secure my phone better. Can't believe 1 drop and my phone won't power on geeez Samsung must be making low quality phones now.I BLAME SAMSUNG

Lol, not every single phone will be exactly the same, and the goes for any and all manufacturers of anything. My first S7 Edge I dropped like 5 times at waist height, a few lower, only a few cracks on the back glass and a few dents on metal edges. Not once did the front glass get scratched or dented thankfully. I ended up exchanging it for a new one since I had GSP and the MFG warranty. Granted I preordered mine and the way Best Buy had to do the GSP plans on those pre orders meant no matter what was wrong with my phone I didn't have to pay for a new one. Got an Otterbox Commuter case and my new ones been flawless I love Samsung. I've already swam with it in a 9 ft pool and no problems since. Granted like I said above, any company who makes anything, even electronics will unfortunately have some that can't take as much abuse since these things are mass produced.

i will be getting mine back from samsung tomorrow sent it in for mic not working when trying to talk on the phone but works ok on speaker phone or blue tooth
the report states they replace the lcd. to fix the mic not working here is a copy of it. also when the back cover was remove some how there was a crack on the back glass and camera glass they wrote it as abuse.WTF new back cover$70.00

My phone slid off a table that was maybe 4 ft high and caught one of the stabilizing bars (that connect table legs) on the way down. Entire screen cracked, mad flickering.
This is a very delicate phone. I have dropped smartphones before (without a case) and this is the first one in my history (starting with the original iPhone!) that got any serious damage from a fall. The other three people I know who own an S7e all cracked theirs in the first 3-4 months too. A case is a definite must.
As someone that works in this field, I lol'd. Its usable if you didnt crack the LCD or Digitizer. For simplicity sake lets say there are three layers, the glass your finger touch, the digitizer right under it, then the LCD. You crack either of the bottom 2 layers, you got a non-working phone. You crack the top glass, put something like tape or tempered glass over it, it'll work just fine.

You guys are also talking about dropping glass phones. Sure it's technically a plastic glass composite material, but they will crack with enough force. Like I said above, I dropped my first one like 5 times without a case and only got a few cracks on the back glass, the front has hit the ground at waist height several times and it never cracked which really surprised me that the back cracked but not the front. I definitely would get a case. The Otterbox Commuter case is really nice because it's tough but still slim enough for easy entry and removal of your pocket. And yes insurance plans like Best Buy's GSP is definitely a must for this price point.
Same happened to mine, a couple of low drops (1 bounce) with no external damage.
The display turned green and eventually died.
From the way the support centre answered, it seems that they have high numbers of this problem.
