Hey guys,
Is there any reason I should hold out on buying this phone? I can get it from amazonwireless for 150$ and no tax.
Is there any other awesome android phones coming out on verizon this year? Or do you think the price will drop drastically soon (maybe to 99$?)

There might be some new phones, they just announced the Droid Razr HD and Droid Razr Maxx HD, they might be getting a nexus device but who knows. I doubt the price will drop until maybe next January. I say go for it. Its an awesome phone.
I see no need to hold out. Only thing coming to think about imo is the Razr HD/Maxx HD, but to me neither one is better than the S3

I noticed the new droids... my sister has a Droid 3. It sucks though, cause she's stuck on gingerbread and it's not a popular phone for customization. From what i read (And experienced), motorola is horrible for tweaking, while samsung is the best with htc in 2nd.
Since this phone has an unlocked bootloader now, and also has GSM radio, that's a big plus for me.
I just don't want this phone to fall another 50$ right after i buy it, especially with iphone 5s coming out soon competing with it.
Do you guys know if there's an even cheaper way to get it other than 150$?

Nope i got mine last week for $200 so I'd say your getting a good deal.
@fr8cture return and buy it again! get your $50 back!
@rpn its probably not going to sink any further than $150 with a new contract for a while. The only reasons I can think of holding back is to wait for the 64GB model (which may or may not be sold by verizon)
Whatever you do, make sure you refuse to give up an unlimited data plan if you currently have one! Make sure the salesman knows its a deal breaker (even if its really not)

I paid $515 on eBay, so I say you both got good deals lol....that said, I haven't thought twice about paying that price, and doesn't bother me people get it much cheaper on upgrade prices
Is this for the 16 or 32 gig model?
The new Motorola droids are identical to the s3 spec wise. In my opinion Motorola typically has better reception than I have had with the s3. But if you like to mod, there will definitely be a better following with the s3, and aftermarket accessories will be more widely available. The other upside to moto is the amazing battery life of the maxx.

You're off your rocker. The GS3 just came out not even 2 months ago. It'll be at least Q2 2013 before we see the GS4. You're a fool to think it's right around the corner.

Yep I'd be surprised if it came out before October 2013. The reason this was out so soon in my opinion is because the amount of carriers that got it. Everyone threw money as Samsung, so instead of only a few getting it like the GS2, pretty much everyone did this time around.
Also if you want a phone with customization do not buy a Motorola. They already confirmed that developer editions of these phones will be coming out for $500+ . Coming from a X2, no one could unlock that thing.
I think you can wait for a period of time.

Can't you just root it? Someone would have to find a way to unlock bootloader but still.
SG3 is now $139 on Amazon wireless. I just got one.
What is there to even consider, this is totally a no-brainer... DO IT man!
S3 specs are lightyears away from any phones i foresee coming out in the next 3-4 months.
This is going to be THE phone until its replacement comes out. I would be amazed if we don't see a nexus by the end of the year, but if you are Verizon don't even bother looking at it. And I personally don't think it is worth waiting. The S3 has gotten awesome support and is such an awesome piece of hardware that you won't regret owning it!

Hello everyone, I'm a longtime Sprint user, and am looking forward to my switch to Verizon very soon! I currently own an EVO 4G LTE, and am taking a look at what phones I should get when I switch companies. The best available phone right now appears to undoubtedly be the SIII.
I have heard that there are some pretty awesome phones on the horizon, and I would love to get them (HTC's apparent phablet, Razr Maxx HD, etc.). However, I really don't think I can wait until November because I can't possibly tolerate Sprint anymore and their ridiculous lack of coverage in my area (they told me the towers are being upgraded for the past 7 months).
So my question is this: is there any way to delay my upgraded phone price so that I can use it once these newer phones are released? In other words, can I use another phone or do something else in order to not use that contract upgrade until November, even if I sign up for their service this week? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you would just go get the SIII if you were in my position, that's useful input too. I love the phone, I just feel like it will be "dated" in a month. Seems like the worst possible time to buy... I'm in a pickle.
Thoughts?
I don't know the answer to your question but I just switched to Verizon from sprint and got the S3. Waiting on it in the mail now. I don't think u can do what u want but im not sure. Hopefully someone can answer it for sure

This is an interesting idea - so I would need to find a Verizon-capable smartphone on Craigslist as cheap as possible, and then use the "upgrade" later when I want?
Another option would be do the pre paid route until you find a phone you want, then jump on contract.

I had not thought of this option yet, although the thought of going pre-paid doesn't appeal to me for some reason. I doubt my wife would go for it either. I have heard that pre-paid is getting more popular though - any suggestions for going pre-paid if I do explore that route? There's so many options out there now...

Go to the galaxy nexus forum and look at the threads that say prepaid service guides or something similar. One of them says "rule your plan with..." they all talk about the best prepaid plans for the money.
Here is one of the more popular ones http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
Obviously you don't have to do it with a nexus, you can use one of the prepaid ****ty phones. They just talk about the plans there. When I read it a long time ago most of them involved getting the prepaid phone and then switching out the sim card so you could just chill with the original phone until something interesting comes out on Verizon.

Also, thanks for the quick replies everyone! I look forward to joining this community soon. Looks like I'll be getting an SIII this week. If it was just me, I'd employ one of these ideas you guys gave me. But since my wife is included... I'm gonna go the simple route and get the SIII, which was equivalent to my current phone anyway (EVO 4G LTE). Seems like it has the dev support to last the two years like my old EVO 4G did (it can run JB now - amazing). Plus the extra RAM future proofs it a bit. I don't game, so I don't need quad core I doubt. The S4 chip is a beast anywho.
Thanks again guys! See you in the forums soon!
Oh one last quick question: any issues I'll have rooting and unlocking this phone? I've only owned HTC and been with Sprint, so I'm unsure of how to do all of this. I hear Verizon is not very friendly about unlocking phones.

The bootloader can be unlocked easily, obtaining root is a simple one-click affair, and VZW has never been friendly about anything but your open wallet. Congrats on the new phone and carrier switch.

Okay that sounds good, thank you!
I was concerned mostly because with my phone, only the non-updated ones can be rooted and unlocked right now. Since I had mine since launch day, my original bootloader was able to be hacked and exploited. New phones bought today have different bootloaders that have patched the explored holes. HTC can be evil that way. I know Samsung is more dev friendly, but I wanted to make sure there were no stipulations like with my phone where I would be screwed if I bought a new one now.

There's still no release date on the Note 2 is there?
Plus I'm not sure a phone that large is for me. I'm getting the Note 10.1 soon, so do I need a phone that's a tablet too? I'm not sure. Plus I won't pay over 200 for a phone. I'm guessing the Note 2 will go for 300 or more.

Depends on how you want to use it. If you don't care about rooting and possibly unlocking the boot loader, then I guess it's worth it, if it's free. However, you can only root as long as it hasn't had the latest OTA applied to it. You can only unlock the bootloader if it's never taken an OTA after 9.16
Otherwise, I would probably stay away from it. It's a great phone, but it's kind of old. I guess it also depends on what you currently have.
In the end, the problem is it's all a crap shoot on which version of the software you'll get. You just never know what you get. If you do end up getting it, do NOT take any OTAs that it might be suggesting. First, discover what version you have. If you have 9.16 or earlier, then you can unlock the bootlader and I suggest doing that first and foremost. Of course, your warranty is null and void at that point, but most of us don't care anyways.
If it's before 9.30, then you might still be able to at least root it, but you won't be able to unlock the bootloader.
Again, it's all a crap shoot on what version you'll get. I got my phone a few months back as a warranty replacement for my OG Droid RAZR MAXX. I got lucky that it came with 9.16 and I was able to unlock the bootloader. But, I was lucky. Others have gotten it with the latest OTA which pretty much screws them over from being able to root and unlock the bootloader. Others, like me, have gotten lucky.
Heck, I didn't even know I was getting an HD until it arrived. The first thing I did was fire it up, saw it had an OTA available and I promptly said no to it. I then went to all my usual forum haunts to research the phone and see if root was available. Was I ever happy to see I could potentially unlock the bootloader! Even happier when I was able to do so.
Considering he's talking about the Nexus 5, I don't think the bootloader is going to be an issue. Only the Verizon Razr HD's were affected by that.
Second, its still a great phone. The version of Jelly Bean it has now is sluggish unless you use Nova, but I'm assuming once it gets the Kit Kat update (which Motorola has promised for all variants) it'll be fine. I'd get it again if I were to choose, even though the Nexus is obviously a better phone. This is because it'll soon have Kit Kat, and the battery life is much better than that of the Nexus.
Sent from my XT926 using xda app-developers app
OP, you should tell us what Verizon (if that is your carrier) is offering you so we can help you choose. Off-contract? Two year renewal? What's going on?
As for the phone, you can do better. I have a Razr HD and while I love it, I'm starting to get feelings of exclusion because this phone was released late 2012. It is now 2014, and the Android world is learning to sprint away from old hardware. What I would suggest is the Moto X. It's like Verizon's apology for being the only carrier that doesn't have the Nexus 5.
As for "free," don't get your hopes up. With you looking at the Razr HD, I'm guessing your carrier is Verizon. They might be offering a phone for $0 or $.99, but there is always more money they need from you. Activation fee, renewal fee, so on. I don't want to discourage you from getting a nice new phone, but be realistic about costs. The worst of it is getting your hands on the phone, the rest is just budgeting the bills.
Anyways, I ultimately recommend getting the Moto X over the Nexus or the Razr HD. It would be around $130 total after the fees; my roommate just got his ordered two days ago off a two-year renewal. After the $50 mail-in rebate, it will reduce his cost in the end. Roughly $80 for a Moto X.
Maybe you should by a Moto G. I have two of it. The Moto G is a great phone and costs not too much.

I think you should buy it. I have one for 1 year now and bought another new one few days ago at bargain price. It's still one of the best phones overall and + it will get updated to KitKat. Quality and looks is still unfathomable for other manufacturers. Performance and battery is excellent.
And you can unlock bootloader and fool around with custom roms which work great BTW.
Don't buy that chinese trash... :victory:
I'd say it's still worth it as I just got my RAZR HD 1.5 weeks ago in trade for my Note 2
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
Depending on the price I would still recommend buying an XT925. It's a good phone which will get KitKat and it can still do all you want. In it's price range I think still one of the best out there.
Now that root has been achieved on the latest OTA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758), I'd say this is possibly more worth it than it was before root was achieved.
I don't know if would buy it with moto get being a sweet deal now. However the RAZR is great. I really like mine and see no reason to change it for a new in the foreseeable future. It's has many merits where it really counts. Eg battery life and build quality.
I just got my Razr HD a couple weeks ago in exchange for my Note II and it's definitely a worthy device still. With the stock battery life I'm getting and switching over to Nova Launcher I see no need to root and I can just run 4.1.2 until such time that we get 4.4 and I'm happy.
still a great device to use..
♦ has kitkat support and i'm sure will get future update through cm too.
♦ still runs latest games pretty smooth !
♦ beats most of the mid-high end smartphones out there in terms of battery life.
♦ has a superb build quality.
so why not ?
If the price is right go for it, it's a great phone.
I got my Razr Maxx HD via Swappa about a 10 months ago and it's the same as the Razr HD with a bigger battery.
I love my Razr, it's rooted, unlocked boot loader, no VZW bloat, running CM 11 (4.4.2)

I bought it because of the 300 trade in. I did not really much of it but it meant I could get 300 for my Moto X 2013 which was my backup phone. This way I was able to get a newer backup phone for cheap. I like the phone though. Honestly the only thing I really really wish it had was an AMOLED screen instead of the LCD. Otherwise it's a pretty good mid range performer for me.

Hry, about that, although the Moto X 2014 is more beautiful, in terms of specs its way worse than this. Only the processor is better and the screen is amoled (and I think amoled is bad because it burns after some use). Apart from that this phone is better. It doesn't have all gestures like wave to wake up but it wakes up as soon as you pick it. Also they removed the gyroscope but it doesn't make a difference unless you use photosphere or Google cardboard. I would pick the droid maxx 2. Good luck
Ooh, I didn't realize the gyros cope thing until now. Not a deal breaker but, that was a feature I enjoyed using on my original moto X. I've got everything loaded on the max right now and we'll try it out for a few days. I think the battery life and turbocharging is going to outweigh the gyroscope

Thanks for the heads up although I think I'm done buying phones for awhile! I would like to go this route when I buy my next phone though because leaving the US carriers out of the update loop seems like a good plan.
Wow it's dead in here. Getting bored with my G3 so I just snagged a used Maxx 2 since I enjoyed my original Maxx and the Turbo. Looks like a nice midrange device that can hold me over for a few months.
True, looks like very few people bought this device.
The reasons why I bought it:
1. CDMA - Verizon phones are compatible with the CDMA network in my country;
2. GSM/WCDMA/3G support to travel internationally;
3. Good LTE-bands coverage, especially Band 20. You can find very few phones which pack CDMA/GSM/LTE (Band 20).
Looks like it is a single-SIM phone - according to the location of the pins inside the sim-card slot.
Has anyone tried XT1564 - does it have the Verizon bloatware?
Something has happened to mine. I decided to factory reset and start fresh. The T-Mobile SIM wont work in it anymore. When I search for available networks, it locates T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T but when I select T-Mobile, it says registering on network but never does. Same SIM I had used in it before. Tried Global as well as LTE/GSM/UMTS network mode. Manually added T-Mobile APN settings as well. No dice. Hmmm
I really like the display of this phone with 64 GB Card .. its a nice phone ...
when Android M going to release ?

It is being released now:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/motorola-droid-maxx-2-update/
not available on my phone .....
Everyone don't wet it! The update will contain Band 12 VoLTE and E911. VoIT is in question? I got this info from higher tech support. Took about 4 days to get official answer. I believe this is the reason why we in the good old of USA haven't received this update sooner! They are working out possible issues with this radio update for marshmallow.
it's been known for at least a week or even more (on g+ post)
I will believe it when it is released.
Once again I wish I waited and bought a nexus

So you can't wait a while lol? At least we will be able to take advantage of sd card. Oh and the phone is cheaper. Patience is rewarding. My old note4 had its last update in March I think to major software update from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1. 1 month vs many months. I'll take it.

So sell it and get the 6p. Problem solved.
Depreciation genius. Wanna buy a 2.5 month old phone plus moto care from me for full price so I can buy my nexus?
I'm using marshmallow on my pure right now, just down the android development section

Do plenty of research first. I sent my 6p back because after 4 days of normal use the frame was twisting. It would no longer sit flat. I carried my phone in my front pocket as i have done with all my phones. I also had much worse reception. I constantly dropped to 3g at work whereas with this phone I don't. If on Verizon there is also no visual voicemail so if you have advanced calling enabled you get text messages instead of a notification that you have voicemail periodically. Your mileage may vary but I couldn't wait to be rid of it.
*edit I'll also leave this little gem

If it's that big of a deal, you'd nut up and eat the difference, genius. I at least offered a solution that would get you M quicker than whining about it.
Waiting for the mm update patiently no problem... My moto pure working like champ, love this phone...

Same here.. got the phone.. it's working as it should be.... there are some fixes you can get from the dev sections... not like this phone came out the box broken that MM was going to make it feel like a totally different phone from what I bought...
You know Nexus phones get the updates right away.. so why didn't you just buy the Nexus instead of the MXPE? Sounds like a personal problem...
C'mon, apologists. Waiting a few extra weeks isn't the end of the world for most of us, but it should've been out by now, given Moto's near-stock software design. The fact that it's taking longer to update their brand new, revolutionary, carrier-free flagship than some competitors' heavily-skinned, carrier-variable models is a very bad sign about Lenovo's priorities.
If 11 months from now we're finding out that the MXPE will not be receiving Android N at all, we can probably look back to this episode and say: "you know, we should've seen this coming." I'm enjoying my phone, but I absolutely don't blame anyone for hedging in favor of the 6P despite a few weaknesses (no expandable storage) because of Lenovo's poor showing this past 3-4 weeks.
So, go to the dev section and install MM...

Can you link to where Moto/Lenovo gave the MXPE an exact date of when MM was going to come out? Last I heard they were rollin' it out in phases... and even then, there were no exact dates... if peeps want to spend more on the 6P/Nexus and not worry about delayed updates, then they should have bought it, but yet, they didn't and are complaining about the "slow" updates on the phone(s) they 'decided' to buy instead..
Go to the dev section and install those MM updates posted there if you guys are really that bent on getting MM on your device...
I can wait, nothing in MM that I really want, much less need, anyways...
A few weeks is nothing. We'll get it.
This isn't like the Atrix and ICS, where the phone was out for a fair bit and also canned once google bought Moto. The phone is new. If other regions are getting it first, then that's just how the testing works.
They really don't want a repeat of Lollipop. I heard horror stories on how badly that update botched the 2nd Gen Moto X.
Loving Marshmallow as well !!!

Do those dev section roms include T-Mobile B12 & VoLTE support??? That's what many of us are waiting for. If it was only a matter of wanting MM then yeah, that's a no-brainer, but no way I'm going through all that crap for a rom that doesn't have the T-Mobile support I've been waiting for all along.
From what I can tell there is no band 12 in the Indian mm but doze works ****ing wonders on this phone even completely stock. I'm on modded marshmallow now and will switch to official mm when its released. Simple enough
