[Q] Way to Delay Upgrade? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello everyone, I'm a longtime Sprint user, and am looking forward to my switch to Verizon very soon! I currently own an EVO 4G LTE, and am taking a look at what phones I should get when I switch companies. The best available phone right now appears to undoubtedly be the SIII.
I have heard that there are some pretty awesome phones on the horizon, and I would love to get them (HTC's apparent phablet, Razr Maxx HD, etc.). However, I really don't think I can wait until November because I can't possibly tolerate Sprint anymore and their ridiculous lack of coverage in my area (they told me the towers are being upgraded for the past 7 months).
So my question is this: is there any way to delay my upgraded phone price so that I can use it once these newer phones are released? In other words, can I use another phone or do something else in order to not use that contract upgrade until November, even if I sign up for their service this week? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you would just go get the SIII if you were in my position, that's useful input too. I love the phone, I just feel like it will be "dated" in a month. Seems like the worst possible time to buy... I'm in a pickle.
Thoughts?

I don't know the answer to your question but I just switched to Verizon from sprint and got the S3. Waiting on it in the mail now. I don't think u can do what u want but im not sure. Hopefully someone can answer it for sure

You would have to purchase a phone at full retail price. Then you could get the pro rated price later.

This is an interesting idea - so I would need to find a Verizon-capable smartphone on Craigslist as cheap as possible, and then use the "upgrade" later when I want?

Another option would be do the pre paid route until you find a phone you want, then jump on contract.

I had not thought of this option yet, although the thought of going pre-paid doesn't appeal to me for some reason. I doubt my wife would go for it either. I have heard that pre-paid is getting more popular though - any suggestions for going pre-paid if I do explore that route? There's so many options out there now...

Go to the galaxy nexus forum and look at the threads that say prepaid service guides or something similar. One of them says "rule your plan with..." they all talk about the best prepaid plans for the money.
Here is one of the more popular ones http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
Obviously you don't have to do it with a nexus, you can use one of the prepaid ****ty phones. They just talk about the plans there. When I read it a long time ago most of them involved getting the prepaid phone and then switching out the sim card so you could just chill with the original phone until something interesting comes out on Verizon.

Wouldn't that be essentially the same thing as buying a phone and going month to month on Verizon until getting the phone he wants at a pro-rated price and contract?

Only difference would be pre-paid may be cheaper, if I'm reading your message correctly.
Also, thanks for the quick replies everyone! I look forward to joining this community soon. Looks like I'll be getting an SIII this week. If it was just me, I'd employ one of these ideas you guys gave me. But since my wife is included... I'm gonna go the simple route and get the SIII, which was equivalent to my current phone anyway (EVO 4G LTE). Seems like it has the dev support to last the two years like my old EVO 4G did (it can run JB now - amazing). Plus the extra RAM future proofs it a bit. I don't game, so I don't need quad core I doubt. The S4 chip is a beast anywho.
Thanks again guys! See you in the forums soon!
Oh one last quick question: any issues I'll have rooting and unlocking this phone? I've only owned HTC and been with Sprint, so I'm unsure of how to do all of this. I hear Verizon is not very friendly about unlocking phones.

It was just a pain in the ass to get it unlocked to begin with. Since it's been figured out it's simple. Bookmark the guide in my sig, Droidstyle did a good job about laying it all out.

The bootloader can be unlocked easily, obtaining root is a simple one-click affair, and VZW has never been friendly about anything but your open wallet. Congrats on the new phone and carrier switch.

Okay that sounds good, thank you!
I was concerned mostly because with my phone, only the non-updated ones can be rooted and unlocked right now. Since I had mine since launch day, my original bootloader was able to be hacked and exploited. New phones bought today have different bootloaders that have patched the explored holes. HTC can be evil that way. I know Samsung is more dev friendly, but I wanted to make sure there were no stipulations like with my phone where I would be screwed if I bought a new one now.

If you are going to wait 3 weeks you might as well wait for the note 2. Just my two cents.

There's still no release date on the Note 2 is there?
Plus I'm not sure a phone that large is for me. I'm getting the Note 10.1 soon, so do I need a phone that's a tablet too? I'm not sure. Plus I won't pay over 200 for a phone. I'm guessing the Note 2 will go for 300 or more.

are there any good sales for this phone?

Long story short: broke my Sidekick, need a new phone.
the only phones I'm interested in is another Sidekick ($380), or a mytouch 4g slide (at least $500). problem is, even though my contract has run only a few months, it's actually cheaper to pay the cancellation fee (max $200) and switch to another provider than to buy a new phone unsubsidized, which afaik, is all t-mobile will allow. (kind of a screwed up business model, huh?)
so since its almost black friday in 6 hours or so,, does anyone know of a good sale on either Mytouch 4g slide, or even the Sidekick?
May want to check t mobiles website. You can always buy a refurbished phone as well.

You would probably be better off buying the phone off ebay or Amazon, because they're a lot cheaper than buying them from TMobile

Just buy a Droid RAZR with Verizon off Amazon, 1 cent.
Should always pay the insurance fee....the 100 or so deductible is better than 500 to replace a phone....

thanks for the suggestions guys, but the only good deal I found at all was for the Samsung Transform Ultra, on Boost Mobile. so I went for that, I think I'll be pretty happy to finally have real stock android rather than a Sense/Touchwiz infection.
I did look for deals on tmobile phones, but they were all for new contracts and upgrades ONLY. I even got on the customer service line twice and explained to them that 1. I could not keep using the broken phone, and 2. the ONLY adequate replacements are twice the cost of cancelling; they did not seem to have a contingency for this. oh well, their loss. my new phone, of course, will have a protection plan, but still, Tmobile really should rethink their replacement system.

Just sell your cell phone contract to a third party.
well now that i'm on Boost, I've been noticing that If I started a new contract with Tmobile under the current black friday weekend deals, I could get this or several other phones free and then actually recoup some of the money I just spent, provided I return the Boost phone I just bought. so:
in general, how good is this phone? I noticed it seemed smooth and lagless in store, but of course that's just a store model without a bunch of additional apps from the market. I'm mostly wondering if Sense causes problems at all regarding compatibility with any apps, or stability problems that wouldn't be expected to happen on a stock 2.3 rom. I have a stock 2.3 phone now, so that could be a risky change; however, this phone I have is only $230 new, single core, and is known for a screen sensitivity problem that may get worse on my handset, but may not.
also, could I expect any problems or side effects from rooting? one of my goals in that, if I get the MT4GS, will be to quickly turn the "genius" button into a search button. that cause problems for anyone? I did the same thing on the Sidekick, and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. but it may have just been that particular phone.

**OFFICIAL** What Phone Should I Buy?

Attention!
In light of all the posts that are deleted and/or closed due to many off-topic posts about what device a person should buy, I have created this official thread.
Although XDA is not a place to extensively talk about what device person should buy, some forums permit it. So to help keep the threads a little cleaner, you may post your questions here.
Granted there are other sites more into device reviews and comparisons, but in the interest of keeping some people happy, and to avoid getting posts deleted, this thread is created for people who have no idea what device to get.
In the end, you should still march your happy self to a shop, and play with the devices that are available. Only then will you be satisfied with your purchase.
Any posts elsewhere asking such questions, that should be in this thread, will still be deleted or closed. This includes posting multi-duplicated posts in several forums outside of official threads.
Thanks, and Hope you use this.
pre order the htc one!!!!
wel, i had the atrix 4g and did alot with it. now i got the atrix 2. i like it more in terms of camera screen and overall feel and preformance, but this bootloader it bringing me down in terms of wanting more out of this awesome phone. so, with that said....around the ninth of may i will be leaving the atrix 2 threads as i have just pre ordered a htc one on [email protected] and will be moving there. the atrix 2 is going to a good friend as we are on aplan together but he has no knowledge of android so seeing that its already rooted and has a custom rom im sure ill he back off and on keeping him up to date with the latest and greatest i know this phone will get here soon. thanks devs for all the hard work for this device and maybe ill see a few of you in the htc one threads.

loved my atrix 4g. favorite phone ever. screen broke though and insurance didn't have any more so i had to get an atrix 2. build quality, screen and camera are better. sacrificed fingerprint sensor, battery life and slightly better processor for it though. also the dev support on the atrix 2 doesn't come close to the support for the OG atrix.

I'd get a Nexus just because the SIII is basically a beefier Nexus with TouchWiz 4.0 instead of straight ICS, but that's more personal preference than anything.

The Galaxy S III will be a great phone, they rooted it before it was even released and they already have an insecure kernel and boot image, so if you like ROMs and flashing. then that is the phone to get.
I will have a Galaxy S III the day it is released. I am in no way getting rid of the Atrix2, it will no longer be my daily driver, so I can hack the crap out the Atrix2, and get us some more great things, without having to worry about not being able to use my phone for an extended period of time, if I want to work on something over a whole weekend or something.

This is the boat I am in...my screen has gone bonkers, and my IT group wants to replace my Atrix with the Atrix 2. I had written off the A2 when they first gave me a choice...but this time I don't have a choice. Too bad because I have just about all the OG Atrix docks (car, lapdock, standard, HD, etc).
What I really want to know is whether or not I can modify the unit. With the OG Atrix now starting to see ICS with CM9 and AOKP, what will I be missing with the A2?
S3 or One X w'd be better choice

Honestly they are looking like the 2 strong contenders..... Sg3 boast a bit more cutting edge features and looks like one x does not have sd storage????? If I had the choice it would be Sg3 all day..... All boils down to preferences and needs do you need all Sg3 offers or would one x work for you.....
every htc phone sux in battery department....while SG3 Luks cheapish 4 a very high end phone ....i think sg2 is best and since price have gone down it more of a better choice...it can do everything what sg3 nd htc one x do....the only thing i t lacks is a hd display ....but seriously i saw htc one x nd SG2 hand to hand nd i dont notice any diffence in display pixel density....both look same....nothing big difference its just a hype of hd nothing more ......

I've posted my MB865 both on eBay and on Craig's List, and no takers. I've set the price very low and still have no luck trying to offload it. Guess I will just choke down the $199.00 from AT&T with a new 2 year for the SGS3.
C'es la vie...
Best Buy will probably buy it from you. Now I'm glad that I got the "buyback guarantee" thing. Once my contract is up I'll get about $150 for it to put towards another phone...more if I go in earlier. Earlier's looking good.

AOSP and AOKP are not going to work unless we unlock the bootloader. That is what I really like... I think blur is clumsy and fat...
The ONLY things about this phone that are great is that it is solid, and the battery is amazing.
Developing anything on this phone is a pain... my sgs 3 will be here tomorrow or tues at the latest, and I already have a kernel and cm9 compiled and ready to test and release over there.

No it does not have to have been bought at a best buy. I traded my HTC inspire that I bought at an AT&T corp store for the A2 and I had money left to buy a 32GB and a 64GB SDcard.
So basically I got the A2 and a 32GB SDcard, and a 64GB SDcard all for trading in my HTC Inspire 4g that was bought for 99 bucks at an AT&T corp store. So basically the phone was free and they gave me 2 SDcards with it...
Now I will say if you have ANY issues BB will screw you over, so be careful, and if you have an issue they will MAKE you get a geek squad monthly support contract... I told them to F-off, and took the first A2 that broke into the AT&T Corp store right across the street and AT&T still took care of me.
Oh, and I bought my SGS 3 from the AT&T website... no more BB after the issues with support even though it was 32 days after purchase.
I will say though, that if you need to trade your phone in to get another one, for money reasons, BB is the place to go. I have heard of certain AT&T corp stores doing trade ins, but the ones around me have never done that.

Paid retail for VZW SG3 should I get dev. edition?

I paid full off contract retail price for a VZW SG3 only to find out it has a locked bootloader. I have a couple of more days in the 14 day window that I can return it in. Should I do that and wait for the developer edition, or will there be a lack of support for it as so few people will have it? Will I be able to flash Roms and kernels created for the other carriers. Pretty much looking for opinions on whether or not it would be a waste to jump through hoops, pay restocking fees, and wait for Samsung's release just to end up in the same boat I would have been in anyway. Thanks for your opinions in advance.
You are one of many, i've spent a decent amount of hours myself trying to figure out whats the next best step.
I don't think anyone has a solid 100% answer right now, I wish there was. but here are my 2 cents:
Personally I'm debating if should return the phone and go with Sprint, problem is Sprint isn't as half as good as VZW in my area so thats a pretty big sacrifice just to be able to load custom roms, as important as it may be.
If you're in the same boat, where you don't really have another decent option, all you can do is wait and hope.
I'm sure this phone won't fall through the cracks mainly due to it's huge fan base and demand, the devs here have yet to disappoint.

Yeah, switching carriers isn't a viable option for me. My family works for Verizon (not wireless) so I get a hefty discount on my rates. I think the main thing that bugs me is I paid $600 for a phone and now I have to sit and watch the other carriers dev forums blow up with cool stuff while we are spinning our wheels. I just bought a Nexus 7 solely to tinker with as I have a Galaxy 10.1 as my workhorse. Maybe when that gets here it will help.
Anybody else in this situation? What are you going to do?
I read somewhere on this site that the non dev version was getting an update to unlock it. This was supposedly from Verizon rep. It's hard to believe since they are selling a separate dev version.

This was debunked, it's not happening; I don't remember what Android site I saw that on, though.
On another note, will people be able to install Sprint SGS 3 ROMs without any troubles on the Verizon SGS 3 Developer Edition, or is that not going to be possible? I'm thinking about getting the Developer one when it comes out, but if we're going to be retarded stepchildren compared to other SGS 3 forums, I won't bother.

Exactly how I feel, and what I would like to know.
I read on here that the dev version has a 30 day warranty that is all. No one year manufacturer warranty like the rest so that ills it for me.

Buy Verizon SGS3 for $150, or hold out?

Hey guys,
Is there any reason I should hold out on buying this phone? I can get it from amazonwireless for 150$ and no tax.
Is there any other awesome android phones coming out on verizon this year? Or do you think the price will drop drastically soon (maybe to 99$?)

There might be some new phones, they just announced the Droid Razr HD and Droid Razr Maxx HD, they might be getting a nexus device but who knows. I doubt the price will drop until maybe next January. I say go for it. Its an awesome phone.
I see no need to hold out. Only thing coming to think about imo is the Razr HD/Maxx HD, but to me neither one is better than the S3

I noticed the new droids... my sister has a Droid 3. It sucks though, cause she's stuck on gingerbread and it's not a popular phone for customization. From what i read (And experienced), motorola is horrible for tweaking, while samsung is the best with htc in 2nd.
Since this phone has an unlocked bootloader now, and also has GSM radio, that's a big plus for me.
I just don't want this phone to fall another 50$ right after i buy it, especially with iphone 5s coming out soon competing with it.
Do you guys know if there's an even cheaper way to get it other than 150$?

Nope i got mine last week for $200 so I'd say your getting a good deal.
@fr8cture return and buy it again! get your $50 back!
@rpn its probably not going to sink any further than $150 with a new contract for a while. The only reasons I can think of holding back is to wait for the 64GB model (which may or may not be sold by verizon)
Whatever you do, make sure you refuse to give up an unlimited data plan if you currently have one! Make sure the salesman knows its a deal breaker (even if its really not)

I paid $515 on eBay, so I say you both got good deals lol....that said, I haven't thought twice about paying that price, and doesn't bother me people get it much cheaper on upgrade prices
Is this for the 16 or 32 gig model?
The new Motorola droids are identical to the s3 spec wise. In my opinion Motorola typically has better reception than I have had with the s3. But if you like to mod, there will definitely be a better following with the s3, and aftermarket accessories will be more widely available. The other upside to moto is the amazing battery life of the maxx.

The new droids do look really appealing. Huge battery nice display and a almost non skinned version of android.

You're off your rocker. The GS3 just came out not even 2 months ago. It'll be at least Q2 2013 before we see the GS4. You're a fool to think it's right around the corner.

Yep I'd be surprised if it came out before October 2013. The reason this was out so soon in my opinion is because the amount of carriers that got it. Everyone threw money as Samsung, so instead of only a few getting it like the GS2, pretty much everyone did this time around.
Also if you want a phone with customization do not buy a Motorola. They already confirmed that developer editions of these phones will be coming out for $500+ . Coming from a X2, no one could unlock that thing.
I think you can wait for a period of time.

Can't you just root it? Someone would have to find a way to unlock bootloader but still.
SG3 is now $139 on Amazon wireless. I just got one.
What is there to even consider, this is totally a no-brainer... DO IT man!
S3 specs are lightyears away from any phones i foresee coming out in the next 3-4 months.
This is going to be THE phone until its replacement comes out. I would be amazed if we don't see a nexus by the end of the year, but if you are Verizon don't even bother looking at it. And I personally don't think it is worth waiting. The S3 has gotten awesome support and is such an awesome piece of hardware that you won't regret owning it!

is ICS dead?

I know HTC has said 500 times or more "ICS is on its way"
but its like 6+ months later than they said
do you think we will see ICS for our T-Bolts?
ive read a million articles, and cant find a recent-ish one
thanks a ton everyone!
and by the way can I have some opinions about the DNA or Galaxy Note 2....one of those bad boys are my next upgrade and to me they are pretty equal, but opinions would be welcome and helpful

I'm doubting an official release of ICS for the Thunderbolt. I'm hoping for HTC to release more sources so that we can just build it ourselves.
And as far as those two phones go, get the DNA. Or wait until February and get the HTC M7.

the only downfall with the dna in my opinion is that HTC makes it
now im not a htc hater, in fact they are the company that make me jump on the android ship, and ive loved them until I had the thunderbolt, rezound and incredible 4g
with the lack of updates from HTC im affraid to get the DNA, the best comparison is the droid razr and rezound; the razr has 4.1 ready to roll out in early Q1 2013 (there was an "accidental" ota update a few weeks back that gave a few hundred uses android 4.1, and motorola confirmed android 4.1 in early Q1) where the HTC rezound may get 4.1 but it will prolly be around june- and I honestly think thats on the early side.
but If HTC shows better upgrades ide jump over there to the DNA right now
Well if it makes you feel any better. The DNA already has sources out for it and it had them released the first couple of weeks of its release. It is very unlikely that a phone with the power that the dna has won't get updates. The problem the thunderbolt has had the whole time is dual core phones were right around the corner when it was made and HTC blew it off for more powerful hardware.

Oh and on another note. Verizon is partially to blame for the lack of support and ics on this device. They keep stonewalling the update because I think they know we still have unlimited and they want us off of it. If they give us the update then it is unlikely we will upgrade anytime soon. You also can't forget that this phone was the first from Verizon that has the svdo capability which the source to that has been kept under lock and key for quite some time now. I think that Verizon is protecting that info because they may resurrect it later on. This and the rezound are the only two phones that are able to talk and surf even on 3g. The others that are able to do this use volte (voice over lte) which only works with 4g.

As much as I hate using my tbolt everyday....I will be holding on to the tbolt until the next nexus phone is released for Verizon. I've had an update available for a while and would gladly go get a S3 but the tbolt experience has pushed me to the point of...nexus or nothing from here on out.
Never realized how slow my TB is until I got a Nexus 7.
Anyway, I'm waiting for either the Galaxy S4 or the next Google/Moto phone. Maybe the HTC M7, depending on when the others are available.

I don't know why everyone insists on blaming HTC for lack of updates on the Thunderbolt.
It's not entirely in their hands, or I believe we would have had it long ago.
The biggest issue is actually the network itself and is what's held up many updates for various devices, in my opinion.
If you think a Nexus on VZW will make things different, THINK AGAIN.(I urge you to read the link)
No matter how good or common, or baseline a device may seem to be, it will never make the carrier any better.
Verizon just plain old SUCKS at getting updates out.

and it wont change. ever. they have moved away from customer support because they don't need to worry about happy customers if they already have them tied down for two years. and all those issues people have disappear when its time to upgrade and the consumer is happy again. then the cycle begins again

thanks for the feedback everyone!
I know HTC isnt just to blame, BUT if you look at apple for instance (sorry for bringing them up) they can do what they want with their phones, and the carriers can pretty much shove it if they dont like it.
now my question is this, why can apple do what they want (ex no bloatware, and updates whenever they see fit) and android companies (HTC, LG, Samsung, And even Google with the case of a nexus) cant?
I left my Thunderbolt for a Galaxy Note II and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect size for me, and it still manages to sit comfortably in my pockets. The phone overall is excellent, but the two features that stand out are the stylus and the battery life.
I did not consider getting the DNA because it has an inferior screen (resolution aside,) and the battery life has been reported to be horrendous. I would say either the Note II or the GS3 are both very safe bets if you are looking to get a new phone.
As soon as my upgrade was up, I left my HTC Thunderbolt for a Samsung Galaxy Note II. I've waiting way too long for HTC or Verizon to update this phone. I've read article after article and posted on HTC's Facebook pages and no response. They've lost me as a customer (HTC, not Verizon; I'm not giving up my unlimited data!).
I suggest the Samsung SIII or the Samsung GNII. I love my Note II and think the Thunderbolt is soooooo tiny after using it (just took a look at my Thunderbolt 5 minutes ago to see what I can do with it without any service on it).
While I'm not ecstatic about HTC, I feel like Verizon is to blame here. Just look at how their policies are for everything else.
For all of you crowing about unlimited, you realize you are paying a monthly rate which includeds a phone subsidy right? Except, you get no phone. It's like "How about you pay full price for a phone, and then pay a higher rate as though you actually got a phone for free." Ooooo sign me up!
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but Verizon is getting lots of blood from you for the sake of unlimited. If you have the money, I guess its one thing, but OTOH, if money werent an issue, you wouldn't care about overage fees.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.

I have two phones with unlimited data on my plan and if I took the share everything plan I would end paying $40 more a month and get less data than I actually need. Plus I still wouldn't get one of those phone subsidies you're talking about since I'm not eligible for upgrade for a while so I would definitely pay full retail for a phone before I lost unlimited. Also there are plenty of phones I could buy used that are excellent for half the price of retail or better.

Just like other guy stated I would be paying more if I went on share everything plan I don't use a crazy amount of data but 13-20 GB a month is where I sit. I am hoping Google releases a phone every year like the upcoming xphone so I can buy it off the play store, if they are in stock that is. But I will hold onto my unlimited data as long as I can cause their share everything plan is a joke, $40 for a smart phone access fee equals $29.99+$9.99 which is what we were already paying to buy the unlimited or 2gb or 4gb all they did was slap a two cent raise and hoped no one would notice. I noticed jerks!!!!

HTC deserves some blame too - it seems like they gave the update to Verizon around September, which is still ten or eleven months after ICS was released.

That is true but how can we expect a company to push out an ota for a one year old device that probably 95% of the purchasers moved to a different device. We should all be happy that they got their crap together enough to give us this last one.
