Refurb exchange? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Found somewhere online that Google offers a one-time deal where if you break your device, you can get a refurbished one sent to you as long as you have purchased from the Play Store, within one year of the requested exchange.
I called Google, the offer is real, I just didn't have the IMEI number handy, only catch is that they put a hold as if you're buying the phone brand new. You get it back once you call and provide a tracking number for your device sent back to Google.
My question is has anyone done this? They weren't able to verify stock on the 32gb White model, I may be able to get a different model if I ask but I don't know yet.
I'm just curious of the quality of the refurbished device. Bad thing is that I don't have the IMEI sticker on the back of the device, nor can I boot it up so I don't know how to get the damn number.

Yea, see, this was from 11/2013 so right when the thing came out, I've moved since then and have no idea where the box is. I MIGHT be able to boot up but I'm not sure. I'll ask Google and see what they can do, has to be something they can do.

From what I read, yes, as of September 2014 you can find a couple of articles talking about the "promotion" or whatever you want to call it.

its a real promotion, us customers only. i tried to get them to fix mine, but mine was bought through tmobile.

I just hope they don't give me any crap about the IMEI, I'm pretty sure they have it on their end with the transaction ID, besides, once they refurb my device I'm sending them, they can verify it.

Well it boots, but the digitizer is busted and there is zero touch responsiveness. So it may as well be dead. I've taken it apart and checked all of the connections but nothing seems to be out of place. I thin maybe the ribbon is torn between the shell and the digitizer itself. I was going to tear the two pieces apart but I'm always scared to because that glue is so damn sticky.

if you boot into the bootloader(no need to touch the screen), itll list a serial number, which might help.

Ahhh ok awesome, I'll check it out when I get home.

Turns out the IMEI number is on the inside of the back cover, so I got everything handled and the replacement will be at my house today. Google gave me free overnight air shipping which was awesome.
Also, the first time I called, they lady was aware of the "promotion" and was about to push things through if I had the IMEI, the seconds time I called, they were a little more reluctant and I got the whole talk about how a broken screen isn't covered bla bla bla, then I got put on hold for about 10 minutes. She comes back stating this isn't a promotion or a written policy, and it's a one time offer, but we can replace the device with a hold on your credit card....so yea, nothing to it, just had to ask.

Nexus S Broken

Well I'm guessing the liquid went into crucial parts and the label turned red. I don't know what exactly happened. I installed Invisible Shield about 7 times and I've not had a problem.
It's not even booting. Well I think it is booting because the phone turns really heated after awhile but nothing displays on the screen nor the button lights.
It has not been over 30 days but it's past 14 days so I'm not sure what I can do.
1) Would I be able to buy the black tie plan?
2) Should I call Samsung? How much would it cost to get a replacement device?
3) Ask T-Mobile if I could get my 2 yr contract terminated and re-sign?
Please help me out...

1) You can still get the black tie protection, yes. Do it over the phone though.
2) In the future, if you get liquid on your phone...
DO NOT TURN IT ON
Immediately remove the battery and place the phone in a bag of rice for about 3 days. When you turn it on with liquid inside you'll fry all the circuits and you'll be SOL.
3) Don't do that. Just get the black tie over the phone or bring the receipt only into the store, wait a few hours then bring the phone in (only if you had to go into the store, if you do it over the phone go right into the store).

Thanks for the reply. I took it to the Best Buy store and the rep said they won't let me purchase the tie plan.
But I guess I can purchase over the phone?? I brought the Black-Tie pamphlet on the day I purchased my phone. So do I call 1-800-GEEKSQUAD and provide information on my phone?
It says 'Accidental Damage From Handling'
If you drop or spill on your mobile phone in the course of normal use, we'll cover the cost of your repair.
What does 'normal use' mean in this case? Would my case be normal?
If I take it to the local Best Buy after I sign up for the plan over the phone, would I get the new Nexus S at the spot or they send my Nexus S to mainland which I guess would take much longer?

If you're within the 30 days they generally replace it on the spot but sometimes they send you a new one. It shouldn't take too long. I used to work at Best Buy so here are a few ways you can game their system. You should be able to purchase the protection over the phone, but if not take only the receipt to a best buy and go immediately to the customer service desk tell them you bought the phone and decided after all that the black tie would be a good idea and pay for it. While they're doing everything try to make small talk and find out when the person who is helping either started work that day or when they get off. If you find out they opened, that means they'll be off work around 4 or 5 and come back after then, if they tell you when they're off just come back after that point.

So on the phone, I would provide basic information such as my personal information, IMEI, purchase date etc..? As long as I purchase the plan before 30th days, I could take the phone on anytime right?
Would you recommend having them install Invisible Shield? I don't want to ever use another wet application protector..

I talked to them over the phone but they said I would have to take the phone over to the store for them to see..... would this be because I met a bad rep or is this a changed rule perhaps?

Its possible you can't get it over the phone. I'd say just go in with the phone off and don't turn it on just bring in your receipt.
I guess I'll try that, if not I'm just going to get unlocked for $529. I'm paying $30 data plan barely used 30 mb this month..
I called them again and they said the same, so I suppose that is the rule.

Putting it in rice works, I washed my nexus one for 30 minutes and it still works today after sitting in rice for a few days
I sold the phone on eBay. I will buy unlocked Nexus S tonight.
Do you think I should just get Black Tie-In for at least this month and maybe next few in case?
So if I had the black-tie in plan, issue like this would've been covered despite being accidental right?
I guess this will be my last Invisible Shield. I thought I was pretty good at it after doing it successfully for 6-7 times in the past.
I ordered SGP screen protectors.

I didn't purchase the insurance so yea... I'm thinking of purchasing the tie-in for another NS though. Maybe for first few months.
Actually soaking it in high lvl rubbing alchohal is better then rice but take it from soaking for. A few hours and set it in fans breeze over night and it should be ok...

You should see a white square when you take off the battery.
I purchased the unlocked version tonight. It says 2.3.1 but when I go to settings -> system update, it's up to date. Is this normal? Otherwise, it seems like it's all good.
I remember I received OTA notification for 2.3.2 soon when I purchased my first Nexus S back in early February.
Edit: I installed 2.3.3 manually.

HELP ME!!!!! Petition against Motorola!!!!! Fix My Phone Motorola!

I have a Motorola Triumph that i bought new from pre-order. Of course we all know most of the problems it had! Well i have one of those and it had the charging problem were you had to wiggle the cable around till it charged or have to not touch it or pick it up while charging, or if you did it would stop charging.
I sent the phone in for repair under my 2 year Motorola warranty.
When they received the phone (9/28/2011 @ 10:05AM) i called and asked how the repair was doing later that day and whoever i talked to said that everything was ok and it will be covered under warranty and that is already being repaired and it would take 5-7 business days to repair. so i waited patiently for it to return which is today (10/5/2011) i opened it up and saw 2 cards one saying pretty much that they are not going to repair it under warranty due to severe physical abuse and misuse, and the other card saying they will give me a 15% discount towards a new Motorola product at there store, but guess what they don't sell the Triumph in the Motorola store on-line, how convenient for them! and to top all of this off they took my PCB out of my old phone and the sticker with all the MEID's and put it in another phone and sent it to me! The one i sent to them had 2 scratches on the screen with no screen protector and no damage to the back of the phone. The one i get back has a huge scratch on the back, the paint around the camera is almost gone and scratched, the MEID sticker is damaged from trying to remove it when they switched it, and the screen has a screen protector with no scratches.
All im wanting from you guys and girls is to help me out and sign a petition (say agree or whatever stating that Motorola should A: Repair my phone for free or B: Replace my phone for free) to get my phone fixed/replaced.
I know there are alot of you out there with the same problem or different ones that Motorola needs to fix, so this is your time to help!!
So after all of that said, please agree or whatever stating that you feel like Motorola should repair or replace my phone for free!!! and I'm not trying to get one over on them you can clearly see by your own personal experiences with the phone that it is not from personal misuse or damage! I thank everyone here on XDA-Developers i've been here for a while and i'm never leaving!!
I didn't know Motorola took back phones like that... you probably should have contacted Virgin Mobile instead.
That much said... get Moto to send your phone back. Your original phone. This has a great amount of wtfness around it, but hopefully if it's the wrong MEID you'll be able to prove it by pointing to the MEID linked to your Virgin Mobile account.

thank you for your response but they already sent it back if you read all the way i recieved a phone that was not mine they took the sticker with the MEID off of mine and put it on another and i am about to update this post so please read what else happend!
***Update***
After writing this i powered on my phone and it skipped the Moto symbol and went directly to the Moto symbol were it has the little swirl around it then goes to the virgin mobile screen and then on to lock screen. but that's not the kicker my screen has black lines through it as if it had water damage and the digitizer doesn't work (meaning when i goto unlock the phone or press the home or back button it doesn't read my touch!! so i called back and talked to a "manager" and they pretty much told me they never opened it and sent it back which is a lie because when i called the day the received it the person said they already started repairing the phone and it was covered under warranty...and she said that i sent the phone in like that! then tried to blame FedEx for swapping it out! You can see where they took my old sticker that has the MEID and put it on the phone i received! please sign this to help me out so this doesn't happen to anyone else!!!!!!!!
That sucks. I don't think it was Fedex at all. I'd like to help you but can you provide the link for the petition or are you still making one? I'll sign it.. I would have been pissed of...

I meant, can you read the device's MEID via the Settings menu? I'm rather ADHD about long paragraphs on the computer but I think I caught that part
If the MEID under the battery doesn't match the MEID stored in the phone, you have a clear case of a mislabeled device. If not, well... bullcrap.
In the mean time, please do post pictures with as much detail as possible, taking care to blur out any personal information.
I had a charging issue too and i had virgin mobile send me a replacement under their one year warranty. they lagged but they did finally send me one. i also them check it to assure me they werent sending me another dud. hope this helps.
dont i have to pay that stupid $5 a month to have the 1 year warranty???

No, you automatically get a 1 year through VMU
really? ok thanks im going to try that!!!!
Going via VM would have been the first thing I would have recommended.
WTF is a digitizer?
It's what goes over the actual LCD screen and picks up your finger presses. It's what allows phones to still pick up your finger presses even when the glass or plastic is cracked.
hmm actually I'm one of the first people who broke the Triumph (You can even see my post) and from first hand experience, I can say that the digitizer will not work at all when the glass screen breaks...
This pisses me off.
I mean hell, if I sent my phone in for repairs, got a whole different heavily f**ked up phone back, and they tried saying that was the phone I sent them, I'd contact a lawyer and ask "What settlement could I get and is it worth the lawyer fees?".
The only proof you need is that the MSID on the VirginMobile account is different then the one on the phone.
i wish they took the MEID sticker off the old phone and stuck it to the piece of crap they sent me as well as changing out the PCB to make everything match!! but no matter VM is sending me a new phone and i will receive it Monday!!! thank you crxmax and idbl_fanatic for sharing this info!!!!

[Q] RMA'd

Hey guys,
Sorry if you've seen alot of posts like this. I've tired to look around for information and I couldn't get a clear answer. My issue is:
I just got the Nexus 5, and its loaded with green stuck pixels, so I called Google Customer support to see if I could get an exchange. They told me about the RMA process. I was sent a link to re-order the phone, with a shipping time of '3-4 weeks' mind you. But my main question that no one answered for me was simple... Do I get a brand new retail model? With new box, charger and cable? or do i get a replacement model similar to Apple. Can someone help me out and let me the answer to this.
You get a brand new phone with box and accessories.
Since this is the first post I've seen on rma, I think you have more answers than anyone else. But I'm going to be watching just on case I run into any issues.
If it's like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, you get a brand new phone if you have an issue in the 12 month warranty. Only if it's bought from the Play Store, obviously.
This phone just came out. How wil they find a refurbished for you lol of course you will get brand new.
Just because a device is brand new doesn't mean that a company hasn't made 'service' models for replacement... I.E Apple..
Let me know how it goes please. I've just noticed 7 or 8 dead pixels (black) dotted around my screen. I'm gonna call up tomorrow and see what they say.
Just sent the phone back to be RMA'd. Google paid for the shipping, used the box that it came in. I'm really ticked off though. I honestly can't believe that Google doesn't have any phones set a side for defects or customer issues. Its crazy that now I have to wait 3-4 weeks to get my replacements device. I'm not saying that I'm more important than folks who ordered the device later or anything, but geez. I am happy though I'm getting a brand new device (I hope, the jury is still out if it will be brand new , we can only go off what google has done in the past with other RMA's). Google, there has to be a better way...

When I've done replacements in the past (and yes, replacements during the 15-day return period are new devices), I've waited until the replacement device arrived before sending back the first unit. Did they tell you to send in your device immediately? That's odd, because they place a hold on your credit card to be sure you send the original back once they've sent the replacement--doesn't make much sense to place a hold if you send back the original first.
Yea, I was told the same. But I figured since I was off today, might as well get it done. I have a phone I can use until then

Gotcha. I've preferred to wait just to make sure the replacement isn't worse than the original.

I thought the same. But I figured with all the stuck pixels. I'll take my chances. I want to be happy for 399 or 450 with tax and shipping out of pocket.
LG should have it figured out by now. A couple pixels on 50 inch screen, ok I get it ... It's the type of technology. But come on. The display is 5 inches. That's a small slice from a T.V. And Apple is no different. Same issues with pixels. I don't want to watch a movie, or look at a photo with a bright green dot in the corner or center of the screen.

I called in today about stuck pixels on my phone too. I didn't get an RMA email yet though. So basically you get a link and you just order a phone from the Play Store as if you were buying for the first time?

[Q] Replacing / fixing power button

Hi there, first post (actually joined the forum to post this)
So I am having trouble with my Nexus 5, essentially the power button has recessed into the phone causing it to constantly reboot over and over.
Now before anyone asks I did not buy this phone new from google play. It was purchased second hand at the beginning of last year. I have reached out to the guy and he can't find any receipt or documents from when he purchased. (Its way out of warranty anyway now).
So my question is this a problem I can fix myself easily? I could take to local phone repair shop, but don't want to be overcharged for something that could be a easy fix (plus a lot of repair shops are kinda shady). I am considering just selling on eBay as faulty then buying a new one but if I can fix thats obviously the better option (for me and my wallet).
The power button does not rattle like i've read people experience, its pushed too deeply for that. Any suggestions to wipe the device, or launch into recovery mode won't help here.
Any help would be super appreciated as this is a very annoying problem i'm dealing with here.

I had this same problem last week. Well kind of, my button was NOT held down, but the phone though it was, any time i pressed it it would think I was holding it down and eventually reboot until I banged my phone on something.
I bought my N5 on release day from Google Play and google told me "Sorry it is out of its one year warranty, tough luck".
I took it to my local repair shop, they confirmed that the button is soldered to the motherboard and the same button that the recent galaxy phones use. They soldered off the buggy one, soldered on a new one for $40 and less than an hour. The buttons themselves are very tiny, and less than $5, but even with my decent soldering skills and digital soldering station, I wasn't comfortable doing the job myself.

Thanks for your response, I will take it to my local phone place but I very much doubt the same level of professionalism as you experienced.

It's not that daunting a task, I'm sure even a crappy little repair shop will be able to do it.

I went into a few shops today and they had no idea what the Nexus 5 even was. None of the shops could help me..

That's crazy. A phone repair shop that has never heard of the N5 has no business existing.

That's annoying. Well, you can try calling LG to see what they would charge to fix it. Or, maybe call some other shops that aren't local and see if theyll let you ship it to them. Aside from that or selling it, I don't know what other options you have. You could try fixing it yourself, it's already busted so it's not like you've got something to lose. I dunno, I wish I could help more but that's all I got. Good luck man.

I sold it for spares on eBay - got good price so I am happy. Now to look for another Nexus 5 and return the Moto G to the store or just put up with the G until the new phones release this year
Wow you give up so easily

Galaxy S7 gap

I have gaps mostly all over the edge as in the pics. Please zoom in to see them clearly. Is this normal? Manufacturing defect?
Just checked my S7... I don't have the same gaps as per your pictures. Mine sits completely level on all sides.
Would probably try and swap it for a new one if possible.
Does it cause any issues?

As I said this is already my 3rd replacement unit. The last two times I went for replacement they said they can't accept this as issue enough to give me a replacement. Yet somehow they gave me after lot of talk. Samsung service is so bad
Apologies I didn't see anywhere in your post where you said it was your third replacement.
Potentially ask for one last return and see if they can get one from a different batch. I had reboot issues with my S7, went through 2 more with same issue, and eventually they got one sent down from a different city, different batch and it has been flawless.
Was lucky the person I dealt with had the patience to go through the whole ordeal for me.
If it doesn't cause any performance issues, then you could always just cover it up with a case as a last resort but it doesn't look TOO bad from the pictures.

i totally agree with u...Samsung service is the worst...my xperiance was that they had my phone for 10 days and did nothing to my phone...i have grey lines on my display although they are not visible in every situation but when they are visible its a little bit anoying...so i sad to them to change the screen and they sad yes they will and at the end i got my phone intact with no replacement or whatsoever...when i had similar problem with Sony xperia the storry is diferent they replaced the screen in one week and its flawles now(my mom is using it)...so yea in my situation Samsung service is the worst so far!!
I've been lucky with my experiences although there quality control is meh. I also had reboot issues with my S6. The S6 was purchased from an official retailer which took no responsibility but Samsung told me to send it directly to them. Had it back within 2 weeks with a brand new charging board and motherboard which solved the reboot issue. Even had one of their reps call me to make sure the problem was fixed which was astonishing.
Then as per my above post, with my S7 rebooting (purchased from Samsung store this time), they went through the trouble of getting me brand new handsets each time until eventually I got one that worked.

Oops somehow I missed to include that it's my 3rd replacement in OP. Sorry. So for the reboot issue you faced after the replacement period, you had to go to Samsung service center and got one from another batch? I want to know is it possible to tell them to get me one from another batch considering the number of times I replaced.

I pointed out to them that my original and replacements had all been from the same batch and all faulty and asked for one that was carrier branded cause I was desperate to get a working phone. By luck, they had run out of silver stock from all carriers at this specific branch. First he offered me a different colour, but then proceeded to call the other branches. The only silver available in the country was carrier branded but since there is virtually no difference between the carrier models in my country, I told them I'll take it. They sent it down for me, 2 days later I had it in my hands and I'm still using it now.
I think there is no harm in asking whether you could potentially get one sent down from another store/batch but don't demand one either. Just be careful not to come off as rude. I have some friends who work at phone stores and even though they can transfer stock from other stores, they won't put in the effort for rudely demanding customers (bearing in mine most of them haven't had 3 replacements like you).
Good luck
