[Q] Do I have a hardware problem? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday my wifi, Bluetooth and tether stopped working mid day while the phone was on. I am running rooted 4.4.3 with xposed and gravity box. The wifi button is grayed out and the Bluetooth button will move to the right then immediately goes back to the left off position.
I have rebooted, factory data reset, restored to 4.4.2, restored to 4.4.1 stock, tried it with the SIM card out etc. and the problem still persists.
I have tried on several wifi networks to eliminate routers etc.
Last night I turned the phone off overnight. In the morning everything worked again for about 10 minutes and then back to the same problem. Wifi literally shut off before my eyes while it was downloading updates.
I really hate to have to send it in and be without a phone, but I'm running out of alternatives.
Any help would be appreciated.

If youve reset and flashed the stock images there isn't much left that can be a software issue

I called Google. They had me unroot and return to factory stock image before troubleshooting. After doing this the problem persisted and they are sending me a new phone. I was a little worried about warranty since I have read conflicting accounts of the effect of root on Googles Warranty process, but it appears not to be a problem.

Google openly admit that if it's an obvious hardware problem unrelated to rooting, they will honour the warranty
Going to LG directly may be different though.

as long as its hardware thats the issue, google will except a rooted phone with a custom rom/kernel. they are very good about it. there is a reason why google gifted us the fastboot oem unlock with the first nexus, nexus one. it wont void your warrent if you buy from google.

[Q] Problem with my N5 when it heats up.

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right forum thread, but recently having lots of problem with my N5.
i have a 32GB N5, when I use LTE & Location on the road, it heats up, the screen starts flickering and eventually, gets to a point when I don't see anything, I have to wait for it to cool down, turn off from recovery by guessing and after 15-20-30 mins, it will be back to Normal. Is this an issue with N5 or is it just with mine.
I bought it from Craigslist, so I do not have any warranty info. not sure if I can get it replaced.
I have used many many different ROMs on my N5, it was unlocked & I rooted it. Currently I am running stock rooted with Faux kernel with Gravitybox for customizations.
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA,
Dhaval.
From the way it is described it is way more than just software especially with screen flickering clearly this isn't an issue with every nexus 5 or Google would have addressed it immediately.. I would restore back to complete stock and see if it still does it. Too bad you bought it from some guy off craigslist, he probably knew about the problem and just didn't RMA it.
There is a Q&A forum.
Do you get some weird colored lines sort of like TV static also? Randomly, my phone does this every so often and I'm somewhat worried about it.
It only occurs in apps, on the home screen it doesn't occur.

A stock Nexus 5 should be pretty well protected from over heating. I would recommending restoring the factory firmware to see if it fixes the problem. If it is still over heating then it probably needs a visit to service.

ElementalX kernel might be making it funny. I'll go back to stock kernel first and see.

OP
if i were you, i would download the Google N5 Image from their servers and wipe your device clean
before knowing is for sure its hardware related, i would rule out all signs of software issues first

Nexus 5 WiFi problem

Hi guys, I am having a strange problem with my nexus 5, or I should say my Wife's Nexus 5. Right what is happening is that when my wife's phone is connected to a WiFi network it does not receive calls. My phone is identical and has no problems at all. The phone has been back to where we bought it from for repair twice and they finally gave us a brand new phone. After getting home and restoring my wife's phone it has the same problem. Both phones are stock and updated to 4.4.4 . I have checked the settings and as far as I can see they are identical. If I reboot the phone it will ring with WiFi on but after a couple of minutes the problem returns.
Now I would guess that an app is causing the problem but I have tried uninstalling and re installing most of her apps but still can't solve this. I have spent ages on the phone to our provider (T-Mobile UK) tried my sim in her phone but still have the same problem. Is there any type of diagnostic software or app I can run to try and pin point the problem?
The phone has been factory reset but still got the same problem! Bearing in mind the phone is brand new and has the same problem as the old one its got to be an app hasn't it, but how to work out which one
Thanks in advance

Well after an evening of uninstalling and re-installing apps and resetting it seems to have cured itself. I am sure it was something to do with the recent system update, as the problem only started recently. The phone is just over 6 months old and we have had no problems until this. Still fingers crossed it seems ok now.

Hi, i'm having the same problem!! When on wifi sometimes calls get through but most of the time it blocks them, I also thought it had to be something about an app but i even booted the phone into safemode which disables all 3rd party apps and the issue was still there. Where you being able to narrow it down to something in particular??
EDIT: Nevermind, i think i found a thread with the solution.

I should have updated ages ago, the problem was in fact being caused by the sim card. Dont know why it suddenly started playing up but it coincided with the software update to 4.4.4 But my phone was identical and had no problem and my wifes did. Compared to hers my sim was relatively new we eventually ordered a replacement sim and there has been no problem since
Sorry I could not be any more help

Turning Wi-Fi on... (wifi doesn't work)

Nexus 5 all of sudden stopped working?!
I also experienced it. The damage in wifi module but I did claim the warranty. have you explain what happened to customer service?
Just to offer my input into how I resolved the "Turning Wi-Fi on" message on my Galaxy S4. It seems I had misconfigured the Profiles, so I reset them (Settings>Profiles>Reset), restarted the phone (hard reset) and voila.
There are probably many different causes, but hopefully my method helps someone.
Adding my two cents
"I am having issues with my wifi not even turning on at all on my Nexus 5. It all started after I got a regular 5.0 OTA update. It didn't happen immediately but soon after the update my wifi quit working and I would have to reboot to get it to work. Me working in tech support and having experience with android I tried everything I knew how to do. I started with wiping cache and that didn't make a difference. Then I did a factory reset and that didn't help either. Then I flashed the factory 5.0 image and that still didn't work. Then I tried downgrading to 4.4.4 and flashed that factory image and the issue still persist. Then I put 5.0 back on and just lived with it. Then 5.0.1 came out so I flashed that and still the same issue. I did it this time as a brand new device and wiped everything and just flashed the image and it didn't even try to work. I think it may be a hardware issue but I never had an issue before the 5.0 OTA update."
This is the info I contacted google nexus support with and he didn't have me try anything because he said I already did basically everything. I am OUT of warranty and my only help would be repair through LG which I would rather not do. Anyone else have any ideas on how to fix it or is it a hardware issue?

GPS NOT locking but still showing available satellites

It used to work but just noticed today it isn't any more. GPS will still find me, but it won't travel along with me in google maps and none of the satellites lock on using GPS toolbox. It shows 20 or more satellites available but none lock. If I do a search for nearby places it gets it right every time but it won't lock on to any satellites. I am rooted, I tried changing the rom and even loading a fully stock one and it still isn't working. I don't get how some of this stuff will work but I can't get any full lock.
Is this likely a device issue or something that I can fix?
I've been having the same issue for a month or two now. I've tried factory reset and taking the most recent OTA. Also tried a bunch of bull**** that Google chat support made me do. Nothing worked. I'm fully stock and unrooted. I just set up for a replacement device today, using the support with project Fi. Should have a "new" device in a few days. I'm not sure what broke it, but searching on Google yields a number of results indicating that this is an issue with the device. We are not the only ones with this issue, although it looked like factory resetting fixed it for a few people, it didn't for me.

Yeah I'm in the same position. I am requesting a replacement today, but I am on Verizon so if the one I get can't be rooted I'm not keeping it. I need root but I also need my GPS to work. No idea what happened to it.

Pixel Oreo - Major issues with Calls

I just updated to Oreo via OTA and the phone worked great for a day. After that, I couldn't make calls and people couldn't call me. My phone would randomly reboot or get stuck on the G logo.
I wiped and reinstalled Oreo, and now the same thing is happening. Plus I see this weird 'colourful static' after trying to make a call, before my phone just shuts off. I tried safe mode and the same thing happens.
Currently in an urgent situation where I need my phone to be functioning, hoping someone here can help.
Thanks
I am having exactly the same issues since the Oreo OTA. If I reboot the phone, the issues go away for a while, but eventually it's back to problems where I'm unable to make/receive calls, screen is flickering (even that colored static you mentioned), lag when unlocking the phone, etc.
Have you found out anything?

I have no such problems. I am running stock. It is running really smooth. I also have september security update. Unfortunately, only thing I can suggest is factory reset.

I am also running stock, never rooted, never unlocked the bootlader, also running the september security update. I have factory reset, and I have even run into the issues while using the phone in Safe Mode. There are a number of people with similar issues leaving feedback on Google's issue tracker, but I was hoping to find someone who maybe has found a solution.

I am sorry to hear that man! I hope you/google figures it out.... may be try flashing the factory image manually.
I'm having the same issues and verizon Chat support told me they are having issues with the OS upgrade and the Pixel. Did the factory reset and everything else. Replacement phone coming now. If it's the Oreo OS, I bet it's going to have the same problem... This is a major problem, as I am a single Dad and have a long drive to get my daughter - do they really want me to text while I drive instead of calling?? This is Day 5 of this issue and 4 trips to their stores.... ugh. Suggestions?
Update
Just wanted to post an update. After factory resetting a few times the problem persisted. I sent it back to my wireless carrier and they sent it to Google. In the meantime I had a loaner phone from my carrier. Google sent back a refirb (it was practically new with new screen and camera), and the issue hasn't come back in the new phone. My suggestion is to send back to your carrier to get a replacement. Good luck!
i am on stock too (from google store), oreo update and have exactly the same problem, it also occurs with "ok google".
after reboot, calls and "Ok google" work perfect so the mic is okay. but sooon after it just stops working and i got randoom reboots.
same is happening in "safe mode"
i did factory reset via android and id did not help.
now i tried a factory reset via boot menu and will check it out.
