[Q] Headphone jack not working - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone!
I bought my Nexus 5 a few months ago, then everything was working five. But about a month ago I started to experience some problems with the audio on my phone. I couldn't get any sound except for the ring sound and alarm sound. I did some research and found out I should download an app called soundabout. This changed the audio output or something so that I could get the media audio through the speakers and phone call audio through the earpiece. This worked and I thought I've solved all the problems, but unfortunantly when I tried to listen to some music with my headphones I couldn't get any sound. I tried to change the settings in the app, but nothing worked. Either no sound at all or the sound came through the speakers even though the headphone were plugged in. Today i rooted my phone and installed Cyanogenmod with hope that this would solve the problem. It didn't..
I've done alot of research on the internet, but I really couldn't find someone with this exact same problem. Have anyone experienced the same, or have an idea of what I could do? One option is to send it for repair, but that would take some time so I am looking for another option.. Could it be a hardware issue with the headphone jack, even though it worked at first?
Thanks in advance for replying!

Well first try removing the app. If that doesn't work try a factory reset / factory image restore. If that doesn't work, then it's a hardware problem.

I have done that before and the problem occured before I installed the app. So I guess I have to send it in for repair then. Quite strange that a hardware problem could occur so sudden..

It's not strange at all. Audio ports can take a lot of abuse. I thought mine just started to act up recently. In the end it turned out to be a loose jack on the headphones and not the port itself. I called Google to inquire about the issue before I checked the headphones. Here's a copy of what google tech support sent me for troubleshooting before RMAing it:
Thank you for contacting Google.
If you are having any audio, speaker, or microphone issues with your device, please follow the steps below.
Step 1: If your device is rooted or modified, revert your device to original factory image.
- Troubleshooting steps may not work on rooted/modified devices.
- You can re-image your device with the instructions from the following link: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Step 2: Check for system updates.
- On your device, go to 'Settings' > Scroll down to 'System' > Touch 'About phone' (or tablet) > Touch 'System updates'.
Step 3: Remove obstructions.
- Remove any cling film, stickers, covers/cases/bumpers, or anything else that can be obstructing the device.
Step 4: Restart the device in safe mode.
- With the device on, hold the 'Power' button to get the 'Power off' prompt.
- Touch and hold 'Power off' until the 'Reboot to safe mode' prompt appears.
- Touch 'OK' to reboot in safe mode.
- Note: To exit safe mode later, simply restart the device normally.
Step 5: While in safe mode, turn off Bluetooth.
- Swipe down from the stop of the screen with two fingers to pull down the quick settings menu.
- Touch 'Bluetooth'.
- In Bluetooth settings, if Bluetooth is on, touch 'On' to switch Bluetooth off.
Step 6: While in safe mode, make sure the volume is on.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to pull down the quick settings menu.
- Touch 'Settings'.
- Under 'Device', touch 'Sound'.
- Touch 'Volumes'.
- In 'Volumes', slide all three indicators all the way to the right to make sure all sound is on and at max volume.
- When each slider is adjusted, a sound will be heard.
Step 7: Check if the issue is resolved.
- Play with the volume levels to hear sound.
- Make a test phone call.
- Use Google Now to test your microphone.
If the above 7 steps didn't work, a factory data reset may resolve the issue:
Note: Performing factory data reset on your device will remove all of your personal data.
1. Go to 'Settings > Backup & reset'.
2. Touch 'Factory Data Reset'.
3. Touch 'Reset'.
After the factory data reset is complete and your device reboots, sign into your device using the same primary Google Play account you used to sync your purchased apps and other content.
If your issue has been resolved, great! Let us know.
If performing a factory data reset didn't resolve your issue, do one of the following:
- REPLY TO THIS EMAIL
- CALL us and reference this email and mention you have gone through the troubleshooting steps.

Nexus 5 does not respond to headphone
Tried all those options mentioned above, still no luck. Anybody got new news to make headphone work in Nexus 5? In my case headphone works with SOUNDABOUT app, so I don't think its hardware issue? HELP!!1
Thanks in advance

They take 2 min to replace

So u think its a hardware (Head phone jack) issue?

Be sure the headphone jack is completely inserted
I thought my Nexus 5 headphone jack was broken, so I took off the protective case to be sure it was not preventing the head phone jack from being completely inserted. I noticed that it took some extra effort to get the Jack to click. That did the trick and it works great. I felt pretty stupid because it wasn't the case or jack, it was me not pushing it in all the way.

Suddenly no sound

This morning I woke up and the screen of my One S was on. When I checked why it was on I've seen that my alarm went off but without any sound.
I've checked my settings if I put my phone on silent mode but it wasn't. So I checked if I can play music, ringtones, videos etc. but still no sound.
I can talk on the phone no problem but the speakers for music, ringtones, notifications etc, just won't work.
I tried a factory reset and installed my custom rom again without any luck...
Any ideas how to fix this or do I have to send my phone in to get it fixed?
haven't had this happen, but did you try fix permissions from recovery
otherwise, if no one else has a solution you could try a nandroid restore
or, better--wipe all including System and reload fresh. Factory Reset won't clear System
or, just wipe System and reflash rom, I don't think data, which Factory reset wipes, would be the issue. not sure

Mine did the same thing, if you press the lower part together you will hear it come back for a bit and then stop again. A wire has come loose inside is my guess, if you are a heavy data user and heated it up maybe? But I called tmob and got a replacement phone sent to me, but I am still upset about it since I only got this phone in april and I already broke it.
Same thing happening to me. I noticed that when I'm in a call though and I play music. The sound works but when I try to play any audio without being in a call it will not work

I tried to press the lower part together, didn't work though. I have not used data it was the first time I turned the device on ans boom no sound;(
I am not quite sure whether its hard or software related because you cam hear sound while in call but it got broken while my device was turned off being in a package....
Is there a way to route the sounds throughout the upper speaker?
Possible solution
Hi guys, my girfriend has an Htc One S and suddently this night the phone started to sound at verry low volume when she received a phone call. After a close inspection i realized that the sound didn't come from the lower speaker but from the ear (upper) speaker. Strange,no? I've tried the settings, reseting the phone ,but nothing... A after a while i've tried one last thing that actualy worked and spare us from a trip to the service. You have to place a call on the One S , answer that call., turn the speaker on and off again in the call then close the call. And the magic happens. Your sound is back again in the lower speaker(the loud speaker). All this indicates that it's a software problem. It's the first phone that i've heard reproducing the ringtone or player sound in the ear speaker. Hope this helps all you out there with a sound problem. Cris

If ur phone is S3 and on JB, it is a bug that sometimes sound starts coming from earpiece (front speakers) instead of rear speakers. Check this thread

no SOUND!
Hi there!
Iam having a strange problem with all sense roms viper 2.2, trickdroid, etc. and a can't fix it and i really need some help!
the sound of the phone stops working, i have the original viper kernel, never changed, the sound does not work every where!!! the mp3 player, games, notification, and the keyboard tones when dialing a number... and this time it only took about 2h after a new clean install of the rom..... ? ? ? (iam lost)
i don'd now why it appends, but when it does, i have do restore a back up that works or re install the rom.
this as happened before, and i made a clean install i have tried wipe the phone app, wipe the caches, fix permissions,.....
please does some one have a clue?
EDIT 1:
what can i do? i always used venom rom, and all ok, now since my phone came form htc support, because of the home button problem (they changed the screen, battery and the chassis, and they fixed)
now i cant use the venom i have done 3 clean install and nothing(( ..... iam going to try the TrickDroid_9.1.0 and see, if it happens again iam screed
EDIT 2:
i notice that if i clean caches and install the bulletproof kernel it stays ok, for about 5m, then the sound goes way... ?!? there must be something that is interfering with the sound services?
just found out in other foruns, that if you press volume all down, and them volume up, the sound starts working again, but some minutes later, the same no sound
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc...d-speaker.html now iam going to remove every app and see if theres one making the problem ... it will take some time . if anyone as a clue please help!
just removed all apps , the problem precisest.... goig to try trickdroid and see what appends, does anyone have a clue!?!?!??!
EDIT 3:
i tried the stock kernel and the bulletproff, removed all apps, tried 4 clean viperone s installs with multiples recovery's, tried a factory reset from the bootloader with the original recovery, tried with the trickdoid. and nothing works!!
what can i do please some one!?
no sound, after 5m of fresh install ? tried all roms, recovery, etc
some one please help! my problem is not with this rom, it is prefect., after-all my problem is bigger .
i have tried aosp roms and sense roms, i have tried different recovery's, and kernels, removed all apps, with all i have the problem...
a minutes after a clean install the sound suddenly stops working, especially if go to the dialer
i have to install a new rom or a restore, but +/- 5m after fresh install, the problem starts again
when i relock the booloader, with a twrp backup of the original rom untouched it shows a "security warning error" ? and wallways reboots to the bootloader
some one please!?!
Sorry for my Bad english. Maybe the connection of the speaker is not really fit. The speaker is mounting on the back bottom side and fitting with two flexible contacts. Try to press or shaking the cover when you get sound after it something in there is broking or not fit.

Mine had the same problem. I notice that the sound quality from the Rear speaker deteriorates day after day and so i took out the back cover and put it back again the sound seems working fine but on while playing music it just suddenly stopped and since then no sound at all from the speaker i even took out the back cover reinsert it again and again but to no avail. No SOUND.
wipe cache
This is a problem from flashing. If you reboot into TWRP and do wipe data once or twice (not just Dalvik and the cache, but also the .android_data), the sound will work. You could also try rebooting the phone.
I had this problem with the builds from the first week in July. I would just flash a later build (from TWRP be sure to wipe at least 3 times) then flash the latest build.

****** also check the upper speaker my cel has alot of dust the problem its you need to tear down the phone its very simple are just are 8 screws 4 little flexes just be careful whit the camera glass hehehee.

[Q] How to diagnose HW sound issue?

I have an xt1033 16GB Dual SIM Moto G. One day, it suddenly starting making strange high pitch noises (while on stand by).
Pressing volume up/down to get the phone to make the confirmation sounds sometime helped, or sometimes the issue disappeared after a restart.
However, in a few days, it got more and more often. The phone would either make high pitch noises or not make any sound at all.
Nothing related to sound worked any more.
So not even the camera, or watching a video on youtube or recorded by the camera. (This video cannot be played).
Of course calling also doesn't work.
I am wondering if maybe there will be some driver errors in the log ? But I don't know how to see the log.
What I tried so far:
- changed to a different ROM and/or resetted to factory defaults to eliminate any software issues.
- changed the 2 speakers
- removed the top right screw (this helped a lot, sometimes pressing and depressing that area made the phone to work). This last step seems to indicate the issue is related to something being loose, a cold contact somewhere on the motherboard. I inspected the motherboard but can't see a lot since the various chips are covered with metal.
Maybe the audio chip has a problem?
Any ideas? If I remove the screws now, play with the phone a bit and put it back except the top right screw it will probably work again for a few hours or days.
But maybe when the issue comes back, something is recorded in the log, like on a PC when you remove a hardware device?
Thank you!

[Completed] Samsung S7 Edge - No Sound

OK here goes - if someone could help I'd really appreicate it...
Galaxy S7 Edge - light drop resulted in smashed screen. Did a screen/frame replacement myself... which worked a treat.
However have noticed that the loudspeaker now no longer works... So no ringtone, music on media play or alarm etc. Also did the *#o*# speaker test - again no sound on speaker (Receiver test on internal speaker is fine)... just the main external loudspeaker which has packed up.
Wondered if I'd blown/damaged during my screen install/phone drop - so I bought a new loudspeaker - but to no avail, still no sound.
So then I checked both my original & the freshly bought new speaker in both a multimeter and via hooking them up to another phone - BOTH UNITS WORKED! - So at least I know that the speaker units that I'm using are both fine. But put either back into my phone and no sound! ARRRGHHH
Have flashed (via Odin) G935FXXU1BPLB_G935FBTU1BPK3_BTU (v6.0.1 UK) - again no sound. Have additionally since let phone auto-update to 7.0 via OTA update - but again still no sound.
All other functions on phone are perfect (including listening to media/music via headphones).
Looking on web, I see a few people experiencing no sound since screen replacement and or flashing and I have tried the host of suggestions offered - everything from pause music and reboot, reboot with headphones in/out, toggle Power Save mode on/off, toggle Bluetooth on/off, clean out the headphone jack (sound works fine coming through headphone jack BTW just main speaker that wont play anything) and ensured speaker pads are definately contacting the mainboard pins etc.
The only thing I've not been able to yet try is "Emergency Software Recovery and initialization" via Smart Switch as Smart Switch simply freezes whenever I select this option (no follow up pop up window) - though phone is recogniosed.
Anyone else expericence this kind of no sound issue? or know of a sensible (cheap!) solution.
Regards
Mike
Think I've managed to find problem myself - if not solved it... sadly.
Used an old loudspeaker from a long since unused phone - soldered up a couple of wires to the terminals for ease of handling and turned on my phone - ran the speaker test (*#0*#) so continuous sound playing (if not heard!)... touching the wires from the bodged loudspeaker on the main PCB mainboard terminals got nothing, though then grounding one wire elsewhere and hey presto - sound once more from my phone!
So looking like a cold solder on the main PCB mainboard!... Reflowing is beyond me, so I now need to hunt around for a decent company who do PCB repairs!
Not quite the 'Have you tried wiping the cache' fix I was hoping for unfortunately... Not sure if PCB damaged in the drop or in the screen repair - but thought would post findings in case someone with exact same circumstances etc.
Regards
Mike

Question Top speaker sound instead of receiver

Hello everyone,
I've got the phone a few days ago and I've noticed that when I'm in call the sound comes from top speaker instead of the receiver (earpiece).
I went to CIT to test it and I found out that it's true, the sound really comes from the top speaker. Also I've found out that the receiver volume doesn't change anything, but if you mute the media there will be no sound at all.
I've tried factory reseting the phone and also tried to do the CIT in safe mode, but no luck.
I have the following question, is it only my device that has this problem or are there more of you with the same problem? I'm asking because I'm willing to ask for a replacement and I want to see if this is only happening with my device.
Thank you.

Mic/speaker/Bluetooth - no sound

need some help. I suddenly lost all audio on my phone (Pixel 4a 5g). I don't know what happened, but now speaker/Bluetooth and the 3.5mm jack don't work anymore. When I try and change the volume it won't show the Bluetooth icon on the volume icon (even when my headphones are connected). The microphone also stopped working and crashes the recorder app if I try and use it. This seemed like some sort of bug to me so I tried safe mode, didn't work. I looked online but didn't find any similar issues. I ended up doing a factory reset but even that didn't help. I'm stuck now. Please help if you know anything.
Thank you very much.
