What's the cause of the problem and if there's any advice?
I can't RMA cause it bought it from another person

Are you talking about the variation in the backlight? That's not uncommon, it's just the degree that can become an issue. If it really bothers you you could try calling Google, they may still honor the warranty if it was purchased from them originally.

They're also not likely to fix anything, pixels being a hardware issue. Though some have claimed it's worked for them I would argue the validity of those claims.
If software could fix pixels, I think there would be recorded evidence of such by now.

You can absolutely fix stuck pixels by cycling colors on an LCD display. Dead pixels cannot be fixed.

I've personally fixed a stuck pixel via jScreenFix.

I guess it might be possible in rare cases where maybe it would have fixed itself over time anyways. Never worked with stuck pixels in my experience, however.
I just find it suspicious that there are 100's of websites talking about how to attempt it, but no recorded evidence of it actually working. It seems almost like an LCD industry conspiracy, but I guess I'm just a skeptic at heart.

The LCD industry conspiracy would be the fact that there's been no real study on it. They want you to buy a new screen/phone rather than have an option to fix your display with no cost to the user.

Guess I never saw it that way. Phones can be returned for stuck pixels, though generally any LCD monitor will need 5-7 broken pixels to qualify for RMA. This makes buyers such as myself wary of spending hundreds of dollars on a potential defective screen that most likely will never be fixed.
However, If there was a misconception that the issue could be solved via software, buyer confidence would be higher and potentially lead to more sales.

If someone is aware the product they're buying has a relatively high chance of arriving defective, and that they have zero options to fix or return the product, who in their right mind wouldn't think twice about making that purchase?

That logic only works assuming there's an alternative. Every laptop/tablet/ereader/smartphone uses LCD, AMOLED or eInk technology, and all of them have a chance of having dead or stuck pixels. If you want to own a laptop/tablet/ereader/smartphone you have to deal with the possibility of it shipping with or later developing dead or stuck pixels.
It's all irrelevant though because very few companies still require large numbers of dead/stuck pixels on a new device. Lenovo, HP and Dell all have no-questions-asked return/exchange policies now, so they will replace a device for a single dead pixel. Asus was one of the first to implement a specific no dead/stuck pixel policy. Most retailers will exchange a device for a single dead pixel, including Google.
What I was referencing originally though was more about developing dead/stuck pixels after purchase, and possibly after the warranty has expired. If there were an easy way to fix stuck pixels that would stop some people from buying new devices.
I have something similar lighting issues just like OP. But for me the right half of the righ of the screen brighter and there is a bigger bright area at the bottom right. It really anoys me that I payed for 550 usd for a phone and the screen is just like that .

Just looked at the one I got from I/O and it had light leakage pretty bad on the left bottom corner. I had to talk to a Samsung Rep and show him to exchange it. He said I was not the first one with this problem. I guess LG is not the only one with quality control issues.

This forum needs quality control with posts like these
LCD's are NOT supposed to have bleeding. i've only had 1 phone ever besides the g2x that had screen bleed and i returned it and new one didn't have it. my g2x now doesn't have it (had to get through 5 to find one though but hey problem solved).
just because most phones cost $500 these days instead of $50-$100 10 years ago doesn't mean that the bar should be dropped on quality. $500 is a lot of money not to mention $700-$1100 for tablets. theres no excuse for poor quality so don't listen to people who say you should just be ok with that. you would only be allowing companies to keep producing poor quality items if they don't get returned so the company can see first hand the profit losses from poor quality control. the reason people pay a billion dollars for a phone is so they can have a TOP END device.
its sad that people are getting so used to paying such high costs that they would be ok with paying several hundred $ for an item made incorrectly, then consider this to just be normal, and then tell others that "that's just how it is." that mentality only makes things worse for everyone in the long run.
that sucks about the galaxy though cuz samsung usually makes good screens. weird though sense they were reporting on doing a $7.8 billion deal this year with Apple to sell apple processors and LCD screens for the iphone and ipad (yeah its true, read it on engaget. apple is pretty much samsung but with their iOS) even know they were suing each other, lol. makes sense why ipad2 has some bleeding on some units though. i heard LG did some of the ipad2 screens too (from a tmobile rep). which may or may not be true though.

I dont know why everyone just keeps saying that LCD screens just leak light. Thats not at all true. Ive had an iphone, G1, Mytouch 3g, Nexus One and G2 and none of those had light leakage. I dont understand if its just suppose to happen then why are other companies keeping their QC under control?

Amen Brother! And for some a TWO YEAR CONTRACT! I found from the G2Xforum how many ppl are content with mediocrity with the products they purchase. I had my G2X for a week before I took it back I've been waiting for the intial production wave to go through before going back. If it persists then ill move on to the next device.
If you think this is bad? Nokia N73 was horrible.
4 dots of leak shows on one side of the screen. How do think?
I was trying to compare it to my G2x....geez.

I'm only two weeks past my one year warranty period so I decided to email Samsung about it. I described the exact issue with a photo and sent it off last night. I got a reply back this morning, not even 12hrs later on a weekend with what was almost an automated response back. The person or robot on the other end didn't read or understand my issue and responded back with a typical copy and paste customer response. I provided the picture you see below and they replied...
Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Care.
I see that there is a dot on the screen and you would like to fix the issue.
I am sorry to know about and I do understand your concern.
If you are using any screen protector, please remove it and check for the results.
In case if the issue persists, it need to be examined with the authorized service technician.

They then go on about if it's under warranty do this and if not do that when their form asks for a purchase date and they know if it's still warrantied. Is it so hard to actually get in touch with someone who cares more than simply creating another statistic.
I'm sad that my phone self destructed and I'm sad that Samsung customer service stinks.
Delaminate? Maybe I'm reading the photo wrong but it looks like some deep scratches to me.

Not really. It's not as if anyone suggested you were lying.
Anyway, I'm unsure where you got the idea that you're two weeks past your warranty period, Samsung phones come with a 24 month warranty, and as the Note 3 was only released 13 months ago, you're pretty much guaranteed to have this fixed by them if what you're suggesting is the fault is true. They can only do so much with a photo, you need to send the handset to them.

That's just for us, because the EU enforces the 24 months warranty period to protect customers.
He's from Canada, and they only get 12 months.
Christ, that must be annoying.
Here's what it looks like today. Correct on only 12 months warranty but the service fella that I spoke with may help me out. Going to see him tomorrow, fingers crossed.
I can confirm this problem, cause a friend of me have the same problem on his Note 3.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Sorry couldnt resist..same thing happened to my s3 exactly 2 years after purchase, its like the gel filler underneath the glass starts to breakdown, then air gets in and the real problems begin. Quite scary really. You can replace the digitizer and glass but they are never the same again.

Would screen protectors and the such help prevent bthis problem? Or is it something that is naturally bound to happen to the device?

Negative, this is an internal issue and as such cannot be helped by exterior cosmetic protection. If this starts to happen you're pretty much fu*ked as far as saving or preventing it goes. Best thing to do is send it back to Samsung or if your warranty is up, repair it through 3rd party.

I'm guessing there aren't ways to prevent it directly, just looking after your phone properly, not dropping it, not leaving it in open arid environments (like around seawater for example). As far as I am aware this isn't a widely reported issue, and has never been isolated to just Samsung but seems Samsung has the most issues (though still quite rare). Maybe it is a manufacturing fault at some point with a minority of handsets.

Are you new to the Note 3? I have just sold my LG G3 to come to Note 3.
So I have tried out pretty much all the roms available for the D850 at the moment, including the aosp ones, and they all have the oversharpening effect.
So even with a custom kernel on the aosp rom, the sharpening effect is still there. It appears as if the sharpening is baked right into the display itself (I really hope I'm wrong).

Haha no.
The over sharpening is a known occurence, noted by many users here on XDA. LG purposely done it to strengthen the 2k experience, but it's clearly backfiring. Simply because you haven't noticed it doesn't negate the problem.
It's not a deal breaker or anything, but I was really hoping a custom ROM and kernel might take care of the problem.

Lol you condition your hair .... I do my beard as well..... Alright let's not get out of hand here on our beloved XDA .. I sometimes sound like a jerk but everyone is entitled to an opinion whether its non existing or very much visable. Let's be friends here and help each other out. But I dont think the over sharpening thing that people are talking about can be fixed by anything ... The screen is the screen plain and simple ... I may be wrong but I honestly could care less ... I changed my font to roboto and I really don't see anything people are complaining about. My eyes get all jacked up sometimes but its more then likely from actually staring at the screen for long periods of time .. Not over sharpening. Good luck in both of your quests

I don't see any over sharpening on mine, and I'm on stock.
I think it's also because you may not be used to the 2k screen with such high pixel density, considering it's not a ROM that's causing it to look that way (at least to you)
I notice it easily when I try to use Lux and go below 0% brightness. There are a lot of factors that go into making it easier to see. Certain fonts of certain colors on certain backgrounds. Some people won't be able to see it at all, some can see it but aren't often in the scenario it'll be apparent and others use an app, font or color combination that'll cause them to see it all the time so it'll bother them everyday. I'm assuming OP is the latter scenario. I'm scenario #2. It wasn't enough to upset me but if a fix comes by, I'll definitely apply it.

When using the phone in pure darkness, below 0 is needed to reach the same level as 0 on some other phones such as the iPhone or the Note 4. Phone Arena was able to measure the nits and this phone puts out a 9 on minimum brightness while the iPhone does 7, S5 does 2 and the Note 4 does 1. My eyes are pretty sensitive to light and I like to have my phone as dim as possible at night.
OMG this is so much like the pixel peeping debate in the DSLR community. Instead of just using the camera, people spend their time looking at images of brick walls and trust patterns at 200% for the sole purpose of finding shortcomings of their lens and camera. Some people here worry that when they view their phone "with certain fonts and backgrounds at below 0% brightness in total darkness" they can see a minor nit. To each his own I guess. I just use the phone.
I agree that the screen sharpening issue is relatively minor as it is only noticeable under certain circumstances. But it clearly is there and it is a flaw that would be nice to fix, so I hope developers continue to play around with the kernel to see if it can be corrected. It's still extremely early in the custom development for the G3. Hopefully with a little time, this can be addressed.
Yeah, I don't know what people are complaining about... Does anyone actually have any visual proof of this "over sharpening" ?
I've yet to experience this.

Interesting. I've yet to experience this. Maybe it's the browser?
Buy a new phone if the phone is too sharp. It is something that cannot be fixed unless you alter the screen dramatically to the point to where its unappealing. What's really funny is that people are asking to have it fixed by LG when its supposedly apparent on AOSP roms as well. Maybe and bare with me on this, its the actual hardware and not a software thing.
Y'all really make it really hard to not have an inflated ego on this site because the grand majority can't use common knowledge and inferring. Your #1 shopping place for Pre-owned cellphones to meet your extremely high qualifications are a click away.
This is not oversharpening, it is some sort of contrast correction. Notice how the blue background has completely dropped to black in the "oversharpened" image. It is understandable why this happens when the brightness is below 0. There is probably a hard coded contrast enhancement that kicks in at this point. I still fail to understand why anyone would want to run the phone in that mode. But as I said, yo money yo problems.

This algorithms simply places black and white pixels on edges where two colors meet. Attached is an image i just took of my G3s chrome browser icon. Note the area where yellow and green parts of the icon meet there are white and black lines separating the colors but no white and black lines separating the green/red(some white pixels on this juncture) red/yellow sections. These white/black lines are not present on my old SGS3. Also some white pixels are visible on the border of the circle too where colors meet the black background. These pixels are there on all brightness settings.
Here is a bigger album of the effect: http://imgur.com/a/wqBtT

Haven't tested it yet. I'm still setting it up, installing my apps and what not.

I don't have any backlight bleed, but my screen does have quite a few dead pixels. Rest of the device seems really nice.

Ouch.. Yeah I'd definitely prefer to have a little backlight bleeding that I only see when the screen is black over dead pixels. Are you going to try to get a replacement?

Yeah, going to try and get a replacement. (or return within 15, if thats my only option) As Sloth mentioned - I don't imagine this will be an enjoyable experience.
Light bleed and dead pixels are not acceptable imo. I'll be sending mine back if it has any type of defects.

No, it's really not. I only notice it when the phone boots up. I emailed them to see what they said. In my experience with IPS displays, they have always had bleeding to some extent or another. LG was notorious for backlight bleeding on their older devices at least
The light bleed isn't that bad.
For dead pixels, how may dead pixels do you have? There is a certain number that is still within specifications. Also, are the deal pixels black or bright?
god, i hope dead pixels don't start to become an issue. in this day and age that's really a deal-breaker whether it's within specifications or not.
Light bleed would be a huge issue for me. Not for what i paid for this phone, and knowing the customer service they have. I'll just send it back.

In my experience, I think every IPS display I've had has had varying degrees of light bleed.
Dead pixels will drive me insane.

I have two completely dead pixels. Top center of the screen. You can see them with the phone completely off, which is odd. (Might be dust under the glass, though doesn't look like that)
I also have 3 stuck / super bright pixels. These are all clustered in the top right.
Build quality as in feel is great
Build quality as in workmanship is horrible.
Backlight bleed here too. Also:
Essential should have specified far better quality work for the titanium on this phone. It looks like Foxcon just used course grit sandpaper to round the edges of the phone and it both looks and feels terrible. It is such an annoyance that even after 2 days of use I still cant get used to it and every time I ahve the phone in my hand I feel like it is a piece of junk. I had originally decided to give it 2 days before I made up my mind about this but now after 2 days I still hate it too much. Ill give it the week but if I still cant get used to it then the phone is going back
You've said that but aren't showing us what you mean, does it look rough or just feel rough in the hand? Is it intentional to add grip or is it uneven and visually bad?
Maybe titanium has a more coarse feeling in the hand than machined aluminum since nothing else has used it before?
As for Dead Pixels, yea I don't care what the standard for acceptance is on that, if the number is =>1 I will send it back. Light bleed I can handle, but even a single pixel is a freaking eyesore on a $700 device. Hell No.
No company is immune from them but I will not accept it from any. Heck I got a $39 tablet from the Windows Store with a 1920x1200 screen and it had a bunch. Got it replaced (I think Just the screen as it looks like its been opened/put together again lol) but the replacement screen is perfect now.

How did you get 2 days back? everyone is getting just delivered today.
Anyone else seeing burn in problems with their GW4C?
I had it for just 1 day and this is the screen burn in I'm getting already.
Set to auto-brightness and AOD on.
There's also the issue of the 20mm band's not fitting, but that's another problem.

Wow, at first I thought it can't be, but your photos...
I guess you should get a replacement. Could it be a faulty screen?
I mean it looks like a bright AOD. Did you use it in a bright environment? But after 1 day, I think it should not look like this.

Working with Samsung to get a replacement (or I'll just return and buy a new one).
My guess is I just got a lemon. The AOD doesn't seem to dimmvery much at all. And it always seems to want to be much brighter than it needs to be (in comparison to all the other smartwatches I've owned)

This is the second report of this. I assume its a firmware bug. The screen should go to greyscale, dim and low refresh frequency. I guess it's not going into these three settings and killing the display. How embarrassing for Samsung!
Just tried both of mine and it is not right. The orange notification dot remains full brightness and saturated. AOD looks wrong to me.
Is the watch lugs being less than 20mm a wider issue? I don't have calipers to measure.
It would suck if I can't use all the bands I have ordered.

Seems to be pretty common.
just came to say, my watch did the same exact thing, as I mentioned on Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyWatch/comments/pifha5
I am doing a warranty claim with Samsung for this.
After 3 days. AOD and auto-brightness.

wtf. these screens are broken.
screen lighting up where it should be black is kinda the opposite of oled "burn in"
let's hope the issue doesn't affect too many users
Hello. I have the same issue with gw 4
Any reports of the GW4 standard showing this problem or is it only on the Classic? They both use the same screen correct?
It really is a shame what poor quality samsung dares to ship out to customers!
But what makes me even more angry are all the fanboys that defend samsung no matter what and always try to blame users for their hardware and software issues even though it´s clear that it´s just a faulty/unfinished product...
In the other thread there really have been people blaming the user for their burn-in issues for "setting the brightness wrong"... On a finished device there should never be a user setting that could damage a device permanently....

So you would really dare to set your watch to max brightness with AOD on for a week?

In my case it was auto brightness and screen burn in for about one day

Yeah. I love how these guys are trying to blame us. My watch was set to the default display settings with AOD on. My GW and GW3 had the same settings and never had this problem. This is my 4th smart watch, first being that LG one that came out in like 2016
Samsung just sent me an email saying they are shipping my device back unrepaired. I'm trying to find out what the hell is going on.
EDIT: Samsung sent that email automated because they determined to just send me a brand new replacement.
I have a status update. Samsung will not replace the watch, they are only offering me a refund. I'm livid at this.

Ummm, so you take the refund and buy a new watch. What's the difference?
My watchface of my gw4 classic literally burn in in 5 hours with AOD and automatic brightness. I also got called from 1000000
But I contacted Samsung and they told that I can send the watch back and receive a brand new one
