[Q] Nexus 5 Spark!!! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was curious if anyone has gotten the update? I am very annoyed with my Nexus and am starting to lose hope that the update will be released. My phone blacks out when i am connected to wifi and have my lte on. Then the coverage in my building is horrible and i sit right next to a window. I do not want to give up but I can't find any information on when this update will come...

What update are you referring to?

A quick Google perhaps maybe he is talking about something called "spark" from the US carrier, Sprint. Not sure what update he is expecting

I am talking about the spark update that lets my phone use all three lte bands. Here in the us, my sprint service just released a new network and my nexus cannot connect to it until they release an update to access the new network.

The fact mine won't connect to the 2 new bands sprint spark is about. and the fact i still go in to a deep sleep mode when im on my 4g and wifi on. It will not let my call or messages come through until i shut the 4g off. Plus I have spoken to reps from sprint and they said there is an update coming to enable the new bands and when you connect to the spark network a new spark icon appears.

Or....you could just do the update yourself to enable all 3 bands.
keep in mind the annoying Spark icon won't show in the top bar until an update I presume.

I already manually enabled them yet i still have crappy service where spark is already rolled out. My phone will not connect to the new network. Me an my wifes phone are the same way. The update is needed to connect to the new network. It's really annoying me. I really just want to update so i can stop manually turning off my 4g to get out of a deep sleep mode.

Interesting. Where are you located btw??? I know Sprint has been taking their sweet ass time with Network upgrades.
We barely got LTE in Salt Lake, but it's been very inconsistent and weak signal.

I'm in Houston Texas... on the map i have Spark all around me. No black out spots either. Mu office is next to a window and no 4g and barely 1 bar on 3g. It's horrible.

As I posted before; it'll be released when Google and LG is ready to release it.
Sprint & Qualcaumn engineers already have test builds of possibly the next Google Nexus 5 update in their hands that enable B41/B26 connectivity properly so it shant be too long until Google and LG decides it's time to send out another android update to EVERYONE, so calm ya boobies.
The Phoenix deployment was made in cooperation with Sprint (NYSE:S) and used 20 MHz of the carrier's 2.5 GHz TDD Band 41 spectrum, with 60 percent of the spectrum allocated to the downlink and 40 MHz to the uplink. Some 45 yellow boxes housing Qualcomm test UEs were distributed throughout the raceway's garage area. The mobile test platforms were based on 8474 and 8974 pro chipsets, more commonly known as the Snapdragon 800 chipset, Qualcomm said.
In addition, Nexus 5 handsets and one LG handset were also used during the tests, resulting in some 60 devices being employed in the test. Service was only available to selected users.

T-Mobile "3g/4g" on AT&T HTC One XL!!

I must be drunk, dreaming or really messed up my phone (AT&T HTC One XL) because somehow, after completely crashing my phone and stuck at the white booting screen for 10 minutes, i'm able to get 3g/4g on my at&t one x now!! or, maybe t-mobile finally switched their 3g/4g frequencies?? but, that's pretty far fetched....
if i remember right, i once read somewhere that T-mobile was planning to shift their 3/g4g frequencies. in the last week or two, AT&T and T-mobile have been "giving incentives" to "allow" current iPhone owners to unlock their iPhones. Switching their 3g/4g frequency bands today might be a hint towards the new iPhone 5? a) t-mobile will not be getting the newest iPhone (if it is announced today) so the switch will allow others to buy unlocked iPhone 5 and bring it to t-mobile without being stuck on edge b) they will be getting the new iphone but have to switch frequency bands for compatibility reasons. I suppose today would be the best time (just in time before the debut of the next "iPhone"), if they really did switch their frequency bands.
thats really interesting, hope its what you guys been wanting!

Definitely what I've been waiting for. Currently on T-Mobile's $30 unlimited "4g" plan and was planning to switch to AT&T Straight Talk just so I would not have to suffer withstanding edge on T-Mobile. Now, I don't have to because they finally hit the switch for their "3g/4g" on 1900 bands. Forget the iPhone announcement today, it's a fantastic day to finally be off edge on T-Mobile with the HTC One X!
flashed Viperxl OTA 1.1.0 and 3g/4g disappeared :crying:
I was reading that T-Mobile was adding 1900mhz to their network to encourage iPhone users to switch. It would make since that with the release of the new iPhone, they would be rolling out that frequency to try and nab some customers.

Changing the rom made your phone hit edge speeds again? Maybe it was never really hitting 3G? Just showing so? Also have a HOX on T-Mobile, can't stand edge

First thing I'd do is switch back to whatever rom gave you 3G speeds!
To be realistic though, it probably didn't have anything to do with the rom. T-Mobile is probably testing their equipment and you happened to see 3G speeds while they were doing so. Then they probably turned it back off, but it means that your market is probably ready for the official upgrade. I know when my city went from EDGE to 3G it flickered on and off over a few days as they tested it, and then it was on for good. I'm on AT&T though. I don't know T-Mobile's practices.

I was flashing alot and messing with alot of things. Maybe they got changed/replaced in the OTA? Or, it might just be that T-Mobile turned on their 1900mhz for a hour or two to test it when no one was awake (2am). But, I was definitely getting 3g/HSPA speeds. Did speed tests and they average 6/8mbps which were the same as my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile's HSPA+.

T-Mobile's latest campaign is to enable their HSPA+ 42 to work on the 1900 frequency. New York, Seattle, Las Vegas, and Washington, D.C., already have the new HSPA+ 42 enabled and they are testing in other large markets. I wonder though, they are doing this for the iPhone 4S which only supports HSPA+ 14.4 but will the one X support the HSPA+ 42 when it is fully rolled out?

Nice. could you upload screentshots of your APNs? I wonder if that makes a difference...I was doing research and found a crowdsourced map of current markets that have reported 3g/4g on 1900 bands. http://www.airportal.de/ My area, other people have reported 3g/4g also but I can't seem to get 3g/4g anymore...maybe it's my current set-up.

Tried to delete it myself, but it lets me edit, I cannot figure out what to click to delete it....
T-Mobile is refarming their pcs frequency to be hspa which is probably what you see. It is not fully widespread yet but should be by end of year (or so they claim) I'm in New York and have towels here and there where it switches and stops back to edge one out of the coverage area.

What exact rom or ruu did you use.? I'm guessing you Adb pushed an ruu if your phone was stuck at the white screen? And what exact area are you in? I'd love to mess around with my one x and see if I get similar results to yours
I was furiously attempting to force WCDMA on my phone during my commute to Mountain View, CA this morning after stumbling across this thread. I have a One X (AT&T) with a cut T-Mobile SIM running CleanROM V Preview SP1.
Anyway, after doing a *#*#4636#*#* and setting the device to WCDMA only, I was able to achieve a respectable 8.91Mbps down and 3.56Mbps up. It was short lived, and I haven't been able to replicate this outside of the area that I passed through, but I can assume that this is a good sign for those of us who are worried about having to modify anything on the device. Now we just have to wait for T-Mobile to finish rolling out the 1900!
Here's the official announcement saying they just added Las Vegas to the cities that support 3G/4G on 1900 MHz (along with NYC, LA, Seattle, and DC areas) .
http://blog.t-mobile.com/2012/09/24/live-in-las-vegas-improved-coverage-and-4g-iphone-speeds/
And this article makes specific mention of this being deployment on the 1900 MHz frequency: http://androidandme.com/2012/09/carriers/t-mobile-one-city-closer-to-nationwide-4g-hspa-for-unlocked-and-att-phones/
That map shows 4g 1900 coverage in Chicago. If that's the case, I'm considering swapping my unlocked ATRIX HD for the AT&T One X. Can anyone in Chicago confirm 1900 4G coverage?

[Q] Constant Loss of Signal (Sprint)

Is anyone anyone else constantly losing and regaining signal? I just noticed it once I got home from work. I'm unlocked and rooted. I updated the PRL and profile. I noticed the signal lose after this, but I wasn't paying much attention before I got home.
Anyone have any advise before I RMA this thing?

Yes, I was just about to create a thread asking the same thing. The signal icon turns to an empty triangle randomly for no more than a minute. It's been happening all day =/
The phone is locked and 3G is working. Not sure about LTE just yet.

I think it's because the N5 just has terrible reception in general. I get 1 LTE bar in areas where my Moto X used to get full LTE bars.

I have experienced random signal drops, even when I have full bars. It might only happen when it's switching between LTE/HSPA, but I haven't really payed attention.
Sprint is doing a lot of backend tweaking to support the Nexus 5s. Lots of performance changes hour by hour as they try and set up the network to allow unlocked Nexus phones.
First time allowing a phone on their network that's not sold them so these are all part of the growing pains. Just keep giving Sprint productive feedback so they can iron out the issues.
I went to the online chat and the guy apparently "refreshed the network and fixed the glitch." I thought he was full of ****, but I haven't lost bars yet ^.^

I have been having the same problem at work and I can trace it to switching between network types. LTE to 3G to 1x. At home I'm good to go. I think it may be because Sprint installed a micro cell in our building and it's not LTE compatible.

Might just be a not so great radio software/firmware at the moment. Most likely future updates will make it better. Now, that doesn't help you in the interim but that's most likely it.
my worst fear.. LG's are notorious for dropping signal. I know this because my old LG Optimus G did it, and many others had this problem as well. You can google or look at my old posts.
I ran a Network Signal Pro log last night and it was a constant signal/no signal. Not sure if it was just voice or voice and date. I have attached it, if someone who knows how to read that better than me could look at it that would be great. I'm running another log right now, will be 60 minutes with a 30 poling rate. I'll post that later. The signal is pretty weak since I am in a hangar at an airport. So we will see how it is.

Why should any "tweaking' be required? GSM networks have let on all phones for years. It would seem that once Sprint allows a phone on the network, it should be in the same position as a GSM network with respect to phones that it did not sell.
Also OP, do you mind providing your general location?
Here is the next log. Never lost a connection.
The only difference I see here is EVDO A at work vs EHRPD at home. Wonder if that is part of the issue?

Other side of the country which makes me nervous that it's not a sprint issue - I'm in Detroit near campus martius and still having similar issues.
it isn't only Sprint, it happens in Rogers and Fido in Canada as well. So I believe it is LG

I feel it may be a sprint issue only due to it constantly losing connection of EHRPD but it being fine now that I on on EVDO A at work. It is the same radio and antenna for EHRPD and EVDO A, right?
I'm going to Salt Lake City this weekend, I'll have to see how it preforms there.

[Q] LTE not working

Hi, I just got my S5 today and have been having quite a few problems. First one was that Best Buy forgot a step: activating my device... They're so incompetent... lol
So anyway, after multiple talk with Sprint I now have everything working but LTE. My S3 could pick up the LTE network when I was home this morning, but my S5 can't seem to ever connect to LTE. Of course I went to check the settings and the option CDMA/LTE is selected.
Anyone has any suggestion?
Thanks,
- Cascius
Not sure what's going on but my S4 signal was 10x's better... My daughter now uses it and she has full lte service and I'm barely picking up 3G... Contacted sprint and they are telling me to bring it in for possibly a defective antenna...

Hmmm... I'm connecting just fine. If you're having trouble with LTE in an area you know had it, try update PRL/Profile firstly. See if thatfoxes. If not, I would highly recommend just Factory Wipe and Wipe Cache since still early before development goes underway. Easy to reset up. I did and seemed to clear up any and all my issues at first.
I have not been able to connect to LTE either. After a reboot, it says LTE but then the antenna turns off and comes back on in 3G. If I go into the Sprint Zone app and try to test the 4G, it tells me to turn it on in the settings and never does a test. My wife's current S3 has no problem with LTE and the Sprint Zone test of 4G seems to work. I plan on going to a local store today and see about the problem.
I tried a data reset, cache wipe, PRL/profile update and no improvements.
It's a network issue with your area. This was a big problem for me when the nexus 5 came out. It's because of the new tri-band devices and sprints network not being updated. There is a a big article about it on s4gru. Trust me it's not your phone. That's why it connects to Lte for a split second and then goes to 3g. U just have to wait for sprint to update the towers in your area

at least you know its not your phone, and rather it is a network issue
Alright here's an update on my end: I get LTE in some areas, but not others (even though my S3 did)
- San Francisco: No luck in any neighborhood i tried... (PS I live in SF so this really isn't good)
- Napa (and highway 80 on the way there): LTE signal most of the way. (only 2-3 bars most of the time, but still, LTE!)
- Mountain View (where i work): LTE with full bars.
My take so far: the problem doesn't come from our phones but rather from the status of those towers. The fact that Napa's network would be better than SF is extremely surprising and disappointing to me to say the least.
Now here are a couple questions:
On my S3, doing update PRL or Profile would have a confirmation/successful popup. On the S5, it just shows a quick "Initializing application" and nothing happens. Are you guys also having the same issue?
Anyway, those are my findings so far. I've been a loyal Sprint customer since 1999, and at this point I might return the phone and cancel my contract in favor for Tmobile or ATT...
Oh well...

yeah i am getting really upset with sprint too, been with them since 2001, i like my plan, but i have the same results as you in the same areas, no luck in San Fran, oakland, or dublin, tempted to go to verizon but i dunno, i like the unlimited data... but if i am gonna be stuck in 3G then there is no use

Oooooh, thanks for the PRL information. I think a recovery is indeed needed. I also forgot to mention that I keep getting a notification that there is a software update. When I click nothing happens... Then i go to settings, system update, and i get a message saying I'm up to date... Pfff... LOL
Regarding switching to Verizon: don't! With work I had an iPhone 5 on Verizon and it was actually worse than Sprint. (At least in the Bay Area)
We now have upgraded to iPhone 5S on ATT and it's definitely better. I've read that TMobile is pretty good too, but have no experience of my own.
Anyway, on a positive note: my S5 is much more responsive than my S3 and the screen brightness is awesome! I was just outside in the sun and could read emails with no problems. The camera is also a nice upgrade as the S3's camera was horrible. Aside from that it really feels like a nice incremental upgrade, but nothing more.
I'll post an update tonight after recovering etc...

Ok, I have been in Oakland for a few hours now, 3g the whole time, I cycled airplane mode, and now am on LTE for the last 10 min, so it seems like it isn't trying to search for lte after the initial time?
I have the same situation here. LTE only stays for a few minutes and then goes to sleep until it decides to wake up (whenever it feels like). I don't think speaking to Sprint will solve anything. It will be a while before we can see Spark in action, I think.
The problems lie with Sprint Spark. My S4 & Note 3 have great reception. All spark devices i activate barely get 1 bar. Its horrible. But its because of the bands they have the devices default on. They are trying to take less strain off of the current LTE single band and equal it out to all 3. Or just the 2 depending on your location.
This isn't a phone issue, rather a Network issue

New Firmware Update Canadian Freedom Mobile H915 Is Available.

I'm installing it now, will let you know if it enables LTE when it's done.
No, no Freedom Mobile LTE yet, but I live on the far west end on Toronto, may be just out of the LTE zone, will check when I go to work in the a.m. And I have the LTE plan. And I just checked, in Mobile Network options under Network Mode only GSM/WCDMA is available.
did you notice anything else that's new with the ota? Mine is downloading now

Not really, I did it on my phone by wi-fi and it mentioned a few changes as I did but playing with it a day now never really saw anything new. And I can confirm during a 90 minute trip through downtown Toronto where they're rolling out the Freedom Mobile LTE network, no LTE. :crying:

Also, I started a bounty thread if you're interested in helping getting our bootloader unlocked so we can flash custom ROMs and root our phone, etc.

And no, I don't get anything from it, the bounties are given directly to the person the cracks our phone.

I'm really not interested in root or unlocking the bootloader on this. There's really no need that I can see. Everything works excellent as is and I'm tired of not being able to use tap and pay along with other apps that don't work with root. All so i can have my clock centred? Or run some hack rom with all the LG system apps removed because yoy know... "Debloated". I have a nexus 6p for when i want to run something custom. For the first time in years i don't feel the need to root and having themes is good enough for me.
did anyone figure out a way to root this Wind / Freedomobile model?

i got the update on the 23rd, and shortly after the update, i got 2 text messages from freedom mobile with Some sort of setting links in the text messages(guy at the store said id get them after the update). after i opened them both, LTE was enabled.
and its working Amazingly! 40mbps on the download and 16mbps on the upload. SUPER responsive.
Also, i live in north York area. i used to not be able to take any kind of phone calls in my basement. i can now call freely anywhere in my house. the new LTE band seems to have better penetration in my area at least.

I'm on the fence as to whether I want to switch over to Freedom Mobile, for two reasons:
1. Currently, there's no unlocked bootloader for H915.
2. Freedom mobile network coverage / reception quality.
Hearing that you're getting better network service is definitely good news.

1. I agree, but I'm hopeful.
2. I'm going back to work today. I'll post what it's like there. Work in Etobicoke/Mississauga in a big warehouse. Garbage reception before. I'll let you know how the new lte is with the H915.
The price of the plan is too good, and my previous oneplus one which had water damage was becoming a safety concern. Battery was puffy out so much that the screen was unglued it's self. So I had to do something.
I just switched over to Freedom myself from Rogers. Was paying $120 a month for 3GBs, unlimited calling, text etc. And I'm on the $30 plan with the same features and so far it's been good to me. Currently on my 6P as im waiting for the next shipment of V20s to come in.
How's everyone liking it btw? Is it a good phone?

I'm happy with it. It's basicly a Galaxy Note 7 without the self-combustion feature. I'll be a whole lot happier with it once I've got root access. My plan is the their $55 everywhere package which included 2400 min and 1GB, on all roaming networks in Canada and US. Their network is a little spotty, but since I can switch over to a roaming network when this happens, I'm happy. I was previously with Bell at $110/month. For a plan with more more features at half the cost, I'll take a spotty network.

Yea I ended up getting one myself earlier this month. It really does remind of a Note 7 too. I love the whole mini screen up top. Certainly helps with the multitasking since I do a lot of that. The only reeaaaal complaint I have about it is the quality of the camera. Pictures don't seem to be coming out as good as what others are getting. I've already updated the firmware (Description of it said "Improved Camera quality") so I thought it would get better but it hasn't.

US T-Mobile

So I have bought a HTC u11 plus and should get it today. What I have done the past week is check my bands at the places I visit most. And while driving. I used lte discovery app to help me with this and some Google searches. In my findings band 2 is hardly used when I am at home or driving. My 1+5 is always on band 4 or 12. At home is the only place where it is on band 2 but it switches to 4 and uses this mostly but I use wifi calling at home due to coverage sucking at my house. I did a Google search on band 2 and it is not very good around my areas. So people with TMobile USA should be fine to get this phone and use here. Also my cousin has a HTC 10 from overseas which has less bands enabled and has never had an issue with lte or call connection with TMobile. Once I get the phone I will do more testing for TMobile folks. Let me know your results if you have any.

Lol i got the notification on this and saw CJ. For a minute i was like is he referring to me? Who the heck is CJ lol i laughed after i figured it out. . Anyway so after having the phone in my hands with all of its beauty and awesomeness. I could not take it anymore. This phone works great if you have a wifi and data connection all the time. But for people who still makes voice phone calls it is the worst.. so bad i put it on ebay yesterday. I got so frustrated the other day. I was trying to make a call and when you do, it drops down to 2g,3g. The call qualty on that is horrible. The calls always dropped and when i did have a good connection the quality was horrible. Half the time i would not get text messages and not everyone uses whats app and that is what i was trying to use because i always will have data. No VOLTE which i missed no WIfi calling which does come in handy. So i kept looking and band 2 does more than LTE I believe that band 2 also deals with AWS which is needed for calling. Man i tried.... i tried to put up with it here in the states. The phone itself is just amazing the Pixel that got away is what i call it. So if you are here in the states Dont buy it unless you have data connection and everyone has like data messaging or calling for a strong data connection. I am really sad and dissapointed at HTC the phone i have been waiting for since the HTC sensation 4g. Hopes this helps.

Well, crap. Thank you for conducting the experiment. Yeah, it's the Pixel 2XL WITH an sd card slot, which is what I want, except apparently without Band 2, the thing's hobbled. I was gonna install the Google HDR+ camera app and have it all! Damn.
I got my hopes up because I saw reports of people bringing the Exynos Note 8 over here and getting it to work, but IT has Band 2! Seriously, how tough is it to add these bands! Do people want to sell phones or not?!!
Anyway, thanks again. An answer is an answer, even if it's not the one I was hoping for.
And yeah, if you're reclaiming that term, I completely respect that, but I still gotta go with CJ.
Sucks to hear that. I've been using my HTC U11+ in the Bay Area for about two weeks now and so far it's been absolutely flawless. Not a single issue finding LTE or dropping calls.

I've had the phone since late December and have had the same experience in the greater Baltimore area. Must be different bands/stronger network in our areas.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I got it from Amazon. Took about 4-5 days to receive it even though Amazons system said 2 weeks. I also just noticed that it's a decent amount cheaper now as well compared to when I bought it in December by over $100.

I agree with this I've had zero issues so far since getting this phone. Only had it for a day now but prior to I ran LTE Discover on my HTC U11 and saw I very rarely used Band 2 (San Diego). After some digging I saw how Band 2 works on T-Mobile and I'm OK without it. I'll be in Vegas in a week so I'll be curious how it holds up there, though I don't really expect hiccups. The one thing I do want to get back is VOLTE/VOWIFI.

I'm not far from you and I just picked up my U11+ from Swappa. Does this phone actually read "4G LTE" when in LTE service area? I have not seen it yet. I have the Nexus 6 and a Note 5 and both have had that when in and around Maryland. THanks for replying when you do.

No, it just says 4G. However, when using apps such as Speed Test by Ookla, it says I'm connected to "LTE T-Mobile", and the speed test are roughly what I was getting on my previous iPhone 6S Plus.

Thank you. I did install LTE Discovery and was able to get information on what band I am on and more. It keeps flipping back to 'H' loads which is made me wondering what I might be doing wrong if it is not in the phone itself. I am in a strong 4G LTE area for work (base) and home. My Nexus 6 and my Note 5 always read 4G LTE in an area as such. I still love this phone even though it's not 2 weeks old yet.
I'm tempted to get this for an upgrade from my HTC 10. I don't care too much about the dual camera for the HTC 12+, plus I want it in Red which might not even come out in the US. So with the bigger battery 3,900 mah, about $200 less and the red color now. Would this be a good buy if I typically travel around the east coast?
I have one I purchased on a recent trip overseas to Taiwan. My carrier here in the US is Tmobile and I only have connectivity issues in rural areas. Can someone point me to a stock ROM from Tmobile that would be compatible with this phone?
Thanks.
