Power Button Stuck. Should I Do....? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my power button is getting stuck. I can still press to turn on/ off. But I have to press it pretty hard. And when I do it doesn't even feel like a button anymore. It doesn't move in/ out just a stationary position.
I don't mind opening it up to fix. But has anyone opened for this same reason? Any suggustion what to do inside to fix?

Send it back to Samsung and fix it under warranty?

It would be worth the hassle to flash stock everything via Oden. To send it in.
But to me it's not worth waiting a month or two or even longer before you get it device back. And on top of that you have to pay shipping both ways I believe. I use my tablet everyday. So I was hoping someone had this issue and fixed it themselves. Suprizingly, this is my first issue with the power button on any phone or tablet. So not quite sure what the cause or fix is.
But thanks for the reply

Months to repair? In Singapore we have service centers where they could repair in hours or the most, a day or 2.
Maybe you can call Samsung up in your country to see if there are such services available?

What!!! I wish we had that in the U. S.
I've never actually sent anything to Samsung to repair under warrenty. But my experiance with any company in the U. S. is you have to pay shipping both ways. And it takes about a month min. Before you receive your device back, if not longer.
Has anyone sent there Note 10.1 in under warranty? If so, how long did it take? Did you pay shipping? And what country?

Well it's a small country.
I looked at ifixit, and it takes like 17 steps before you have access to the power button.

power button broke ~ any idea on how else to lock the screen?

So my power button works like 1/4th of the time now for some reason and almost everytime I press it the power off menu will come up.
Does anyone know of an alternative button or combination of buttons to lock the screen? Is there a widget to turn off/lock the screen?
I searched in the Dream app forum and got nothing. I also Googled to see of there was a "make your own" AnyCut short cut I could create and got nothing either.
I really am hoping someone can help because at the end of the day I don't know if HTC will warranty this as its unlocked.
Thanks!
Call HTC. Others with an unlocked bootloader have had success in at least getting a swap done.
Cool, I'll go ahead and give them a shout.
Agreed.
HTC/Google would have to prove that unlocking the bootloader broke the power button, which is highly unlikely.

No, actually they don't HAVE to prove the bootloader broke the button. But they will most likely honor the warranty anyway as a courtesy. When you elected to unlock the bootloader, you expressly waived your warranty.
Right - they don't have to honor the warranty at all since its unlocked; however, I called and they said they would swap it out. They didn't even ask if it was unlocked and even more surprising they didn't ask about water damage. My assumption is even though they didn't ask about water damage if there was they would charge me as it's in their disclosure.
Support was very helpful and they answered quickly on both calls. Problem with the swap is they out a hold for $529.00 on your card until they receive delivery of the returned phone. Since I don't have an extra $529.00 laying around I'm waiting for my next paycheck.
If anyone does have an alternative for the power button let me know. This is a pain lol. I do know that there are combinations such as power, volume down, and trackball soft resets.

Putting a hold on your credit card is not the same as charging it. As long as you have that much available credit on your card, you're fine.
yup i can confirm it . i just had it done . they just authorize it for 529 . but not a cent was actually taken out

So assuming that I had $529.00 in my account the would authorize it and I could go buy something or would my card get declined? Car payments coming up so wanted to be 100% on this.
The $529 is locked up temporarily... so it sounds like that would be a problem for you. Do you have another card you can use?
Yeah I do but might wait to keep it on the same account.

it puts a hold on that amount...so yes..you would get declined
rgr that. Ill wait for my next paycheck and thanks for the clarification.
Yeah my power button stopped working as well. I didn't get the phone wet or drop it or anything either.....
talked to HTC earlier this morning about getting it replaced or repaired. They told me that they would only be putting a $28 hold on my card until the process was complete
Hmm, thanks for the info. I'll give them a call today.
Hey!
Not sure if anyone here would know, but do you think they would honor me a swap as well since I purchased the phone from someone off of craigslist? it clearly has had no water damage since they only had the phone for like 2 days and I have had it in a case since day one.
Thanks ahead of time!
Hey,
Quick followup question, did anyone have to unroot their phone before sending it back? I got them to send me a replacement but I didnt tell them anything about it being rooted or unlocked..
Please help!!
Thanks

You can unroot your device but without the ability to relock the phone, it won't matter
wait so it doesnt matter if i unroot the phone or not? i thought it voids the warranty and its like breaking the law.. i kno u guys mentioned that unlocking the phone is ok with switching but what about it being rooted?
the reason i ask is because my phone wont turn on since the power button is completely out now.. im really worried that they would charge me in the end
Thanks in advance!!
Ps. i never mentioned to the rep that it was unlocked or rooted soo idk if they will still accept it

[Q] Busted Motherboard

Hey guys,
Couple of weeks back, my Nexus died one me (after a few days of power button problems). I was hoping it was just the button circuits that had gone, but after speaking to a few local repair guys, apparently the motherboard is busted. I'm using an i9020T in India (only the i9023 parts are available here), and I'm not sure how financially viable it would be to send the handset back to America to get it repaired.
Any suggestions on what to do? Does anyone have a spare motherboard that I can buy? or is there any way to repurpose the parts and use them for something else.
Its only 13 months old, and everything else is in perfect condition, and I would feel really bad to throw it away as it is.
Any suggestions?

Same thing happened to me and they ordered a motherboard from banglore or something just ask the samsung authorized repair shops.
Was yours the i9020t or the i9023? I asked samsung repair here, and they said they won't repair the phone here. It needs to be sent back to america...
I actually just got my i9020T back a couple days ago from Square Trade for the exact same problem (good thing I got Square Trade). Power button stopped working, but the phone never stopped. When I got the phone back they said they had to replace the motherboard because it was bad.
The repair shop that Square Trade sent my Nexus S to is called CF Repair http://www.cfrepaircenter.com/ -you might want to give them a call or e-mail them to see if they can send you a motherboard or at least see what their advice to you is

Hi Nikhil,
Any updates on this? I have the 9023, and pretty much the same problem. Power button problems, and then a dead set after a week. The service centre is quoting INR 9k for the motherboard replacement, damn!
Sigh, would hate to bury this.

Mine's still lying unnoticed. The number of people with the same issue is disturbing. Any leads?
My power button is starting to fail on me today, does it mean my motherboard is somehow getting messed up too?

[solved]Replacing power button

My sister-in-law has an infuse and I think the power button is stuck in the "on" position. It just loops at the Samsung logo. I'm quite familiar with Odin, ROMs, Heimdall, etc. This isn't a bootloop. I pull the battery and the second I replace the battery it tries to boot without touching any buttons. So therefore I can't get into download mode, should this be a software issue. I think it is hardware, because I can replicate this issue on my infuse by holding the power button at all times.
The phone is 13 months old, so just out of warranty but not eligible for upgrade yet. The phone has insurance, but the deductible is $199...
Question is, can I replace this myself and where to get the replacement part?
Or can I trust this website?

So, untill you pay, you have no idea where you're sending your phone.
Does the button look like it's stuck in? If the button is just stuck, try bumping the phone a few times.
No, the button still feels like it is able to be depressed. It feels right, but the phone is acting like the power button is always being held down.
I have googled and found numerous people with the same problem and most bring it in for a warranty exchange, I am just out of that window...
I know ebay has parts for phones, if you're good with a soldering gun, you can fix it yourself

That was my experience also.
$8 = Shipping phone from my home to MobileTech 1st class ($5.50) plus insurance ($2.50).
$30 = Power Button replacement plus 1st class return shipping
Total cost to me = $38
I had my (daughter’s) Infuse back and running in less than a week.
I do live about two hours drive from MobileTechVideo's location, so shipping may be slightly more expensive or slower for others.
It was great service. They give you updates about the status.
Highly recommended by Nick and me for Infuse Power Button Repair

Just as another opinion...my warranty was up on my infuse when this started happening so an exchange wasn't an option. What I do is slam the device on only the power button a couple times and it works fine. I probably have to do this every couple of months, if at all. It works for now so...

I just sent my S2 phone to mobiletechvideos... I called them up yesterday and the person was very helpful...will know when I get it back hopefully next week...Based on what I read, seems legit.
I received my phone yesterday. I have no longer have issues with my S2 rebooting. I purchased the service through the website, mobiletechvideos, and paid through paypal. I purchased the basic powerbutton repair for $35. I immediately received an email with instructions. Send the phone with no battery, I printed out the instructions with a brief summary of what is the situation and included my order number. I mailed out the phone last Saturday, make sure you pay for insurance and it was sent on a first class box with the phone wrapped up in bubble wrap. Keep receipt for tracking information and insurance purpose. I received notification by email when the technician received it. You can check periodically for the status of your repair. He emailed me on Friday it was completed and shipped it out. I received my phone yesterday. Total days since I mailed it out, 9 days. There is an option on his website if you want faster service- purchase it.
Phone is working great, highly recommend his service.
Please remember to register an account on his website before your purchase the service. I will be sending out my other S2 next week. I destroyed my powerbutton by a fix that a member posted here, using pliers to squeeze the powerbutton. My other S2 didn't reboot like my newly fixed S2,the powerbutton just stopped working.
I highly recommend this service for $35 instead of buying another phone or you flashed the phone to another carrier and have no insurance.

Phone was rebooting right after saying rom name. Engaged power button. I COMPLETELY took apart the entire phone. Blew very hard on exposed switch. Removed board saw the power Switch looked normal blew on it Still Rebooted. Said what the hell doused it in alcohol Still Reboot.
Pushed the power switch REALLY hard... worked just fine now. Thanks much.
Thanks
My Infuse was boot looping for a week or so now. It was the loop of the Samsung white line and the Rogers screen. Over and over again. I read extensively as I didn't want to clutter the board with a question that was already answered. I came to the conclusion after much reading that my power button may be at fault. In this thread I read about just pressing the power button really hard. I thought what the heck. Nothing to lose. I tried it and WOW! My Infuse is sitting here running just fine. Many thanks again.

Phone won't turn on after charging?

After unplugging my phone and trying to turn it on.. it doesn't work. I've unplugged it and the charging indicator is still lit up. I've tried all buttons combos hard reset (power button+vol dow).. all of the combinations and nothing works.
You can't do anything since it is most likely hardware problem, don't mess with it, take it to the service if you still have warranty.

Probably not.
Iv been there same problem, mine was about 5 months old!! . Take Ragazzzas advice and get it to a service centre.
If your in the UK samsung will send out a courier to pick it up. You could probably send it recorded delivery if you have to. . But you need them to have while it's in warranty.

Screen Failure

Wow it has been a long time XDA, how is everyone?!
Anyways...last night as I was reading a text message my screen suddenly turned off and won't turn back on. Before this the screen showed no signs of damage, no artifacts and no tinting issues. The phone has never been wet and never been dropped. It is an unlocked Snapdragon model purchased directly from Samsung the day it was released.
The screen seems to still respond to certain things:
-Battery charge sound plays when plugging the phone in
-Holding power down seems to lightly vibrate the phone
-Putting S pen back into place vibrates the phone
-Calling my phone works (ringtone plays) but nothing appears on the screen
-Randomly tapping the screen like a mad man will make the texting noise
I've tried every button combo (felt like I was playing a **** flute) and I have tried plugging it into my PC but it does not recognize it.
Anyone else hear of issues like this?
Any recommendations before it goes back to Samsung?
Thank you for your time

Try a full charge. Pull the SD and Sim cards too.
Don't think it will help but nothing to lose.
Probably a failed soldier joint, connector or a solid state component that wasn't that solid.

Send it back to Samsung they'll either fully replace it or just replace the screen, one or the other but it won't make any difference the phone will still be fine after it's fixed. As long as you didn't do anything to cause it then it'll be taken care of free of charge.

You're welcome, wish I could of helped. Sounds like you tried all that could be done.
If you're stateside see if you can get it done here.
Talk to Samsung US tech support. Philippines and SK tech support suck so keep trying until you get US if stateside.
No idea what they will do... lean on them if need be.
They'll first want to inspect it most likely.
Maybe they own up to it... that's the right thing to do.
If not, teach them some lessons. The screechy wheel gets the grease. Don't settle for anything less than that phone repaired or a new one.

Quick update
Sending the phone in was not too bad, just log in to Samsung and go to your list of products and select warranty (My 2 factor authentication was enabled and it was texting the code to my broken phone, Luckily I had a backup phone)
It will give you the option of scheduling a timeslot with a Samsung Experience store if you have one near you or mailing it in (I'm in Hawaii and there are no Samsung Experience stores here so I had to mail it)
They pay for postage just make sure to follow the instructions (They ask you to disable some sort of Google security thing before sending it in and to include the power cable and charging brick)
Print out the label they provide to you then pack up your items nicely and drop it off to UPS
I'll continue to update for those who may have the same issue or for those who need to send their phone in.

Yea. But what do you do when they claim your service has been received in destroyed condition and such. I've dealt with Samsung here in the US several times and honestly scared to ever send them anything again. The stress. The chats. The whole ordeal was nearly life changing

Just my experience. But it happened. It sucks majorly.
Just a quick update.
I sent the phone out on the 16th, it took 3 days to get from Hawaii to Texas.
On the 20th it was inspected and repaired (LCD issue) I am expecting the phone to be back in my hands on Friday the 23rd.
Samsung didn't ask me anything nor did they give me any issues.
When the phone returns I will take a closer look and let you guys know.

I'm sorry that happened to you.
I just received my phone in the mail. Everything seems to be working fine.
Apparently they had to switch out the screen and the bottom firing speaker.
I'll post some pictures the next chance I get, now I just need to reapply a screen protector and I'll be good to go.
Yay
