Hi XDA community,
As you might be able to tell from the title, I wrote a Tic Tac Toe app as an exercise. I had only briefly looked at Android development previously, but never actually had a finished app published before.
If anyone has the time, would you mind trying the app out and putting up a review here or on the Google Play site? I'm new to this and would like as much criticism I can get from anyone. I also wouldn't mind help on getting more people to download the app, as that will bring it up in the rankings and hopefully others will download it as well.
Here is the link in case you decide to try the app out: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alex.tictactoe
Anyways, thanks in advance and enjoy your day =)
Best Regards,
shronas

Thanks for the replies guys. It's really encouraging =)
I have a ZTE Racer II - 500 Mhz Processor - ldpi.
For me the game isn't smoth at all, i have to wait 2-3 seconds till it responds to a command, but I know, bad phone is bad phone.
And i attached a screenshot of how i see the game on a ldpi screen - maybe you want to tweak it.
And i can beat the computer anytime. :silly:

That's strange. I don't know why it would hang like that. ... The layout looks fine. The app seems to scale well across various density screens. Have you tried the hard level? You can switch levels through the Menu. I should make a settings activity and put it as a third button in the front screen. I'll look into why it hangs though.
Well, i didnt try the hard level, but i will.
Edit: Its laggy only the first time i start or if its cleared from memory. After some time, it starts running good.
Hard mode is nice.

I'll keep Hard mode as it is then.
The program "programmatically" makes a small database table to store the scores. This should happen every time the data is cleared. But that shouldn't be causing too much of lag. I'm not sure how I can tweak the database though.
Don't worry too much. My phone is low and i got used with laggy games. If you can fix the layout for my screen it would be great.
But you can make a settings activity or tell the users they can change the difficulty from menu, a toast for the first time they play for example.

From your earlier screenshot, it seems the bottoms gets cut off? Your phone is more squarish. I could make a layout for smaller screens with smaller text. That might work.
Tested on my lg p970, good job, thx

Yes. Maybe if you get off the title and make those two buttons smaller, clear board and reset scores, it will be ok. Also, you can put them in the menu.
Thanks for looking at the app ComfyMobile!.
eliboy, I am currently working on another app and don't have time to alter the Tic Tac Toe app. I hope you understand. However, thank you for the input. If I decide to go back and rework some parts of the app, I'll keep in mind the "square" resolutions as well. Thanks!

Billy, the haunted man, is in trouble. Balls are falling down and he has to run to avoid being crashed. It's your task to help!
Billy can be played using the HTC-GSensor or the touchscreen and should run on nearly any resolution.
Have fun and let me know what you think!
*changes*
ver 0.41
* added 1 sec startuptime to let the gameengine initialize correctly
* fixed bug with replay button not working
* fixed runtime error with exit button
* Billy now installs properly in the Program Files\Games\Billy folder
I am very curious to try this out but I got two error messages (and i tried installing to main memory and storage and got the same messages). I've attached the error reports. I'm on a Fuze (Touch pro). Any ideas?
This seems to be an error of the gameengine not initializing properly. Uploaded version 0.41, it gives another 1000 msec before the graphics display. Let me know if this works, please. Fixed two other bugs as well, see changelog.
Wow very odd game hehe, works fine on my Touch HD.
You should a option of changing the ball texture around. In the youtube vid, they had just a black halo representing the ball which could improve the performance.
Thank goodness the music can be disabled too lol
Nice work.
Feel free to change the balls, the bitmap files can be found in the game folder. It wouldn't make any difference to the performance though.
I know that the game might "stutter" a bit if to much is going on in the background (other programs running). A softrest is helpful here
... and I do really *love* that music!
I cannot run in on my Topaz... anyone can help? thank you!
What happens when you start the game?
Simple but fin. Really like it.
I have version 0.41.
I have 2 error messages on my Touch HD (see attached)...
Also, 3 more ideas to make it perfect :
1) Silent mode by default (so we can launch it and play wherever we are)
2) Some levels of difficulty in the settings
3) hmmm... Could we have Billy a little bit more bloody when he is crushed (like in the you tube video). This is so funny.
Thanks a lot * * * * *
What a fun little game thanks
how do you make a game like this acually?

Not much I can do about it atm. I know ot happens to a few people but don't have a clue why. Must have something to do with the Gameengine
not initializin correctly.

1) If you turn off the sound the game should remember the setting and starting without sound.
2) The difficulty goes up by the amount of balls you survive. (The balls come in faster). Don't think there is really a need for levels (just trying to keep the game simple )
3) I'm not tha gfx-geek myself, but feel free to add whatever you like. The graphic files can be found in the games' folder.

Damn, you mean it doesn't ACTUALLY make the tea?
Too bad it pauses when one turns off the screen or sends the app to the background. Kinda defeats the purpose if the phone has to be on all the time. Nice look, would be cool if you could fix the pausing.
Hi.
I think this is kind of great.
Maybe u could make a virtual cigarette app which looked like a cigarette burning. then i could get my gf to quit finally. Touch Puff tech.
I like OpenGL apps so thanks.
good graphics BUT it just crashed my HD2. Set the time for 3 mins and turned the screen off, turned it back on and it was just stuck and not counting down. could not do anything to the phone, had to remove battery and turn it back on for the phone to work again.

Yeah, damn right! Just put a cup under the USB port of your HD2. When the time is over tea will come pouring out.
Seriously:
Thanks for the tip about the screen-off bug. Actually I designed the app so that the screen would stay on (in dimmed mode) while it is running. It never came to my mind that anyone would want to turn the screen off
I'll try to fix this soon...
does the hd2 make coffe? NO, but i makes tea!
jokkin aside...with opengl will have many good lookin app like iphone...maybe stupid apps, but surely funny
I know of a tiny app on the iPhone of a glass of beer that you can fill up, and when you tilt the screen (just as if you're drinking the beer), the glass becomes empty again.
Would be nice to have that on the HD2 as well
And of course beer as better than tea
Who cares about iphone?
At xda-devs you have also an app for everything!
@pappagallo...the app of drinkin beer exists for wm!
If you want to make coffee then you need this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=573661
here's the 'beer' drinking app mentioned: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=573661
I'll try the next release to see how tea brews (unfortunately in VGA cause I'm still on a Touch Pro)
Any thoughts on resizing to VGA? I just tested it and as expected (because i'ts designed for WVGA) the bottom of the screen is cut off. if the screen merely moved up a bit it would be fine. Thanks again- aesthetically it's phenomenal.
That should be no problem. Right now I'm a bit frustrated that the HD2 is so slow with OpenGL. Even this Tea app with only a hand full of triangles isn't running totally smooth... so right now I'm working on that.
Once this problem is solved I'll be happy to port this app to lower res screens
Please make it work with screen off , for example add a button to turn screen off
I actually tried that yesterday.
It seems to be very difficult to make an app run while screen is turned off. Maybe someone here knows how to do that?
OpenGL
Is your app using OpenGL ? I tried to write a small test program, but it always fails when I call eglMakeCurrent(...)
Would you mind sharing your initialization code ? I tried it with C++ and some "libegl.lib" file I found on the internet. They seem to work and get the libgles* files loaded according to the debugger output, but I can not get any further then the above call, which always returns "false"
Hi there!
I based my code on this project: http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/08/net-compact-framework-wrapper-for.html
I'm sure that will you
Doesn't work on XPERIA....
There are a couple of sites that host brewing times for different kinds of tea. For example Black tea = 3 - 5 minutes, Tisane = 5-7 minutes. (http://www.artoftea.com/learn_about_tea/steeptime.html) it'd be great if you could code it as to select the type of tea you are brewing and have it count the time for you (as oposed to the app being just a stylized kitchen timer). Just a thought.
Otherwise, the application looks great, nice animation waiting for tea to brew is entertaining now
Hi
Great idea but indeed, to be used as a timer, you need to to update it so it does not when one turns off the screen or the app is in the background as it totally defeats the purpose. Looking forward to the update and it will be a killer app
Keep up the awesone work! Amazing graphics by the way
[FREE][GAME][Brain & Puzzle][2.2+] Pick Lock FREE
Hi guys,
Here is my new brain game Pick Lock.
Google Play link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.co.uk.dotstudio.PickLockFREE
The goal of this game is to match the target pattern using two actions - translation and rotation. The levels are generated randomly, so the player will face different challenges every time the game is started. The player needs to think ahead like in a game of chess. There is always a 'Key' button available, which shows a possible solution. Please read the 'Rules'. If the players hit wrong button there is an 'Undo' button, which goes one move back, and 'Init' button that clears the board. The 'Key' button is available only when the board is clear. The game features an original background music composed by Yordan Velichkov. The game does not have any competitive goals, but offers a relaxing atmosphere for players that want to exercise their minds. The free version features 30 levels with solutions starting from 1 to 4 moves.

This app is looking great but isn't the logic behind the game too simple ?
hi man,
thanks for feedback. yes the logic is simple in terms of user input. the resulted combinations are hundreds of thousands and that feature pleases me - simple input with complex results.
New update (1.0.2) is available now. The rules are described better, as suggested.
guys, are the levels too easy or too difficult? i was thinking about unlocking the moderate difficulty button and present 30 more random levels with 5 moves solutions.
downloaded the game and played a bit. lots of fun!
Hi guys,
I just decided to unlock all levels of the game and released version 1.0.3. Now 90 levels that are generated randomly every time you start the game are available. I hope that will bring more fun and downloads.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Love this game
Hi @dotstudio,
First impression - I love this game.
It's pretty, and clever.
The 1st few levels look too easy, but then when I tried medium I was confused by the puzzle...
So I went back to the beginning, and started moving through the levels quicker.
After finding that the 1st concept is introduced really slowly, I'm enjoying the way new concepts are introduced after that.
Totally love this game. :cyclops:
Thanks for giving it to us
Thanks @Hotfingers,
I was thinking of a reward system, where the user will have 1 key at the begining which can be used once to reveal a solution of one level and then will disappear. A new key will be obtained if the user solves a level with the exact or less number of moves the solution requires. So one can obtain 90 keys for all levels + 1 key that is given initially for total of 91 keys max. Of course that means that I need to also keep score and introduce some competitive goals...
Btw, thanks XDAdevelopers for the review of my game!!!
The game sound like fun but unfortunatley it does not work on my OneX with CM10.
I get to the loading screen but the the app closes down.
Graphic is incredible! Great work!
@Geggan I hope i will have more experience in the future to solve that kind of issues. If you still want to try the game it has a web version http://www.dotstudio.co.uk/game/
The graphics is amazing!
Really a great game! I like it! If the game would remember the last level I played it would be perfect.

Hi alexx,
Also running CM10 and the app works OK. I think it depends on your handset.
The few CM10 versions I know are still "under development" - so maybe you can hold out a bit until yours gets a bit more stable..?
(I know CM10 is so fast compared to CM9 that no-one wants to go back after tasting 10)
Also you can try different kernels to see which ones make your phone more stable..?
Finally you can ask your CM10 team if they will test this app for you to see what's going wrong. If your CM10 is still under development this should not upset the team too much.
good luck

I still dont have the experience to give any advise on that issue. Since you are the second one that reports issues with CM10 I guess I have to put that in the app description.

Congratulations to your game - it's fun! Comments:
1) The popup advertisements block the whole screen. This would not be a problem but the timer goes on when they are displayed, so you loose important time while clicking them away! Since the difficulty is extremely high, it is frustrating to loose a round just due to an advertisement popup.
2) Some boxes in the early levels seem extremely fast and thus unclickable for me. However, that's my subjective impression. Maybe this game is also much easier on tablets than on phones.

The game seems colorful and interesting, need to try this, congratulations.
EDIT: played. You should lower the difficulty a bit, because it's already hard on a second level. Also, the "clicking" sounds in the main menu is too loud (maybe it's just for me). But the game seems ok
