UPDATE (7/31): Ideas have been scrapped, funding a complete project instead
UPDATE (6/15): Possible alternative solution in the works
UPDATE (6/13): Quick Details
UPDATE (6/6): Photos on this post
Hey guys,
So if anyone you follow me closely, you guys will know that I'm a big fan of wireless charging accessories (especially when it comes to making things universal). Being the big supporter that I am, I have wireless charging pads in multiple locations employed as I am trying to go completely cable-less. However, there has always been one thing missing that would be able to truly make this wireless charging experience complete; and that is a Wireless Charging Car Dock.
Well luckily ladies and gentleman, after hours of searching, I have found us a great solution to that problem!
This is a combination of a product that is brought to you by one of our own members here at XDA: Original Thread Here
This is called the Owl Carpad Qi Wireless Charging Car Mount - Sale Link for Galaxy S III

In addition with another product:
This is called the Samsung S4 Wireless Receiver (confirmed with NFC working) - Sale Link (Video Review)
Or another listing of Samsung S4 Wireless Receiver (thinnest with NFC working) - Sale Link (Video Review)
Or official Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Back Cover - Black or White
The great thing about this wireless charging receiver/insert is that you can use ANY battery cover with it (stock, flip cover, S-View cover, etc...) and the Galaxy S III OWL Carpad should be compatible with the Galaxy S4.
If anyone wants this solution, I have currently purchased the Galaxy S III OWL Carpad and preordered the Galaxy S4 wireless charging kit and will be testing as soon as I receive it and will be sure to let you guys know but I am quite confident that these will be compatible.
Please feel free to voice your comments/question below.

Looking forward to the review! Make sure you include a long drive in it running GPS and see if it charges up the phone or loses battery - I really want to love wireless charging, but it seems like it's just limited to home use right now because it will only do 1A and this phone really does need 2A to get it charged!

Cant wait! If it actually charges while screen is on and GPS and Mobile Data is being used I will definitely do this in my car!

Found a new link for a Samsung Galaxy S4 Receiver that is currently available! - Link (Added to OP)

The pad insert on ebay says its 500mA. Is that normal for qi pads?
Do u think that higher ones would be available later?

500mA is a little bit on the low side but I think they put that there as a general estimate. I see another sale put one of the same but rated in description 500mA to 700mA. See Here
There's also this one but can't tell what they rate it for.

How thick of case?

How thick of a case could you get away with? I am shopping for a good rugged case, I am really hard on phones.

did it work
was wondering if you had a chance to try this out an if the charge is enough to keep your phone going?

Just received my phone today, still waiting on the receiver and car dock.

I'm looking forward to your review I have been interested in the wireless charging from wiqiqi and how it works.

Appreciate you posting this- this is my BIG quandry- replacing my car and Desktop dock. I plan to use a Otterbox commuter case. Some you tube's are out there on HTC DNA showing wireless works even with a Defender.
Wondering if you plan to use a case and if there is a recommendation for a desk dock - or should I just use the car dock on my desk?

This is what I'm wondering too.
I've read about chargers that could work up to one and a half inches while others say "any" added case will prevent charging.

There is a 26 minute video of the guy trying this charger out. It appears that with GPS and Screen on you will hold charge and maybe charge at 100mA. The connector is also coax, not USB so i will need to redo my wiring job i did so I do not have to use a cigarette lighter. Also much was made about it getting hot with GPS on and to stick it by the AC vent.
My Droid X (replacing) got smoking hot anytime GPS was on anyway and with a wired charger- maybe charged at 1% per 20 minutes.
It comes form Korea by a couple fo guys it appears. So it looks like you need to order the dock and the S4Qi kit for the phone. I am still looking for what the best desk dock is because I need to use it for work phone (speaker mode required)

Received my Qi receiver, NFC antenna extender, and wireless charging pad yesterday.
The actual wireless charging car dock should be coming in tonight! Will get more pics for you guys.
Also added more receivers to OP.

the design of the receiver on the phone looks better than previous- wider at base and looks like adhesive for it as well?
What is the rating of the charger?- 1500mA?- will be interesting to see if GPS+Screen still allows a slight charge.
also any ideas for a deck dock would be appreciated- iI have a otterbox commuter case

Have some photos for you guys on next post
EDIT: Didn't get a chance to test it today because the receiver I have doesn't align properly with the dock so it doesn't charge. Confirmed with the seller which receiver works and purchased that one. Should be coming next week.

You need to use a specific receiver?
Which one is recommended?

Looks like it's 1A output which is below the 1.5 amp on other wireless chargers. I ma not expert by any stretch but from what i researched that means ~700mA to the phone. Another version put 1A actually to the phone and with GPS on and screen it made 1%/10min charge,
Here is the 1A reciever which usually goes with a 1.5A charger http://www.ecrater.com/p/18004506/qi-standard-wireless-charger-charging?gps=1&id=52211034499
Seems like this will hold but not actually charge with GPS and screen- will be interesting to see.
I have found a desk charger I may get - but it's 1A which may be ok since i won't have GPS on at the house

Car holder and charger

Hi All,
Can anyone recommend a decent car windscreen holder and charger for a Nexus 4? Obviously won't be an official one or anything just something you've used for a similar device that works well. I've gone through two car holders recently because they were cheap rubbish. And my charger didn't actually charge properly it just slowed down the rate the battery drained!
May want to change the title from CARD holder.
I will be using the generic holder that Samsung sells for their S3.

I have been using ProClips for years now with every phone I have had. I emailed they last week and they will have mount for my new N4 in Jan 2013. I will surly be getting one. They are very good.
I've used this arkon mount with the GNex, so it will work with the N4. I have it mounted to the dash in this vid (it has a sticky suction cup similar to clingo material) but it can also be mounted on the windshield. I plan on getting an N4 soon and this is my mount of choice for when I'm in a car (usually ride a motorcycle).
http://www.arkon.com/mobile-grip/galaxy-nexus-dash-mount-mobile-grip.html
Here is my nexus 4 with the cheap and cheerful Spider holder, I like it because its light and easy to move from car to car,and can be used as stand, I dislike it because it goes on the vent and if heating is on it can heat up the phone.

I also use ProClip and will wait for them to have it for the N4.
I will just be mounting one of the wireless orbs to my dash. This is what I used when I rocked the Palm Pre and loved it! Obviously I was using the touchstone charger at the time.

Going by previous history, hopefully Brodit will have one out in within a month.
Personally I think I'm going to try and mod a GNex Brodit holder to fit, if that's at all possible.
does anyone of you know, if there will be a car holder, which supports the wireless charging function?
if there will be one, i'll wait to buy a car holder, but if there won't be such a thing i'll buy an other one...

We here at iBOLT.co will bring out a new and very sleek car-dock compatible with the Nexus 4 in the 2nd half of December. It will work with all cases too and have an integrated charger. The challenge is that it appears that Google completely removed the support for "car-dock" mode in the 4.1.2 Jellybean for the Nexus 4. This means that even if we incorporate an NFC tag to start "car-dock" applications like "CarHome Ultra" the home button will not go back to the car-dock app screen, but revert back to the default Nexus 4 screen so you can't really toggle between apps without starting from zero...
For Brodit fans I'm using a passive iPhone 3GS holder that is designed to be used with a case on the phone. Works well with my naked N4 and should cope with whatever case / bumper I wind up using too.
It's adjustable and worked for my Galaxy Nexus as well.
They are quite keenly priced as well.
I personally don't like car mode. Add long add it has an nfc tag and wireless charging I'm sold.

Seconded. Wireless charging is top priority in a car dock at this point.
Having a charger that activates car mode somehow is a must for me. Driving on the road without having easily accessible applications is too dangerous.
With my current phone (S2 Skyrocket) I tried the Infuse dock that was said to work with it. However it wasn't snug enough so it never activated car mode defeating the purpose of it. This is why I'm hesitant to buy other phone car docks...
Or are there other methods of activating car mode (without tasker)?

I know back in the days of my nexus one you could just launch the car mode app and it would activate car mode. No tasker required. Although tasker makes everything so much simpler

Well I didn't use the default car mode app, I used Car Dashboard.
And how would you use Tasker for it? The only thing that would work is if you set a Tasker profile to start any time a USB charger would be plugged in right?

You can trigger car mode from within Tasker - I'm using Tasker to make a home grown Zoom "car mode" widget visible when paired to my bluetooth
The Proclip holder for the Infuse 4G and the Optimus G may work. I'm gonna pick one, not sure which yet, now while there's a 25% Black Friday sale.
Infuse 4G: 71 mm wide x 9 mm thick
Optimus G: 68.9 mm wide x 8.5 mm thick
Nexus 4: 68.7 mm wide x 9.1 mm thick
So if I go with the Infuse holder, it will have 1 mm space to each side but the thickness is about perfect.
If I go with the Optimus, the phone will be 0.6 mm too thick and I may have to sand down the holder.
I think the Infuse holder may be the best bet and least hassle.
I'm using the Samsung universal dock and it is working pretty well for my nexus 4.

The search for the perfect compatible wireless charging backing

"From what I have read, LG, at AT&T' s request, hardware disabled Qi charging on the AT&T variant. The only way to do this is to get the pma circle case, take the the reciever out and put it onto the original battery cover."
UPDATE: the international coil stickers that have the CORRECT contact placement do not work with our AT&T G3's when using the correct PMA charger: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54378115&postcount=57

Our AT&T LG G3 D850 model is the one marked "Not compatible"
Here is the official G3 slim hard case:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-Official...Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&var=&hash=item1c433e4848
LG Slim Hard Case:
LG Slim Guard Case:
I have not heard from anywhere that LG will be making their amazing beautiful case for our AT&T model. The mission is to find a backing and/or charging coil pad that is compatible to our matching charging shape (NFC + wireless charging = total of 4 connections with bigger gap in middle)
A quick search for PMA, Powermat charging stations on Amazon shows a decent one from Duracell:
http://www.amazon.com/Duracell-Powe...F8&qid=1406162696&sr=8-1&keywords=pma+charger
So no problem finding one of those.
Now that we know exactly which time of connection we need let's update here and see what we find for our G3s :good:
From what I have read, LG, at AT&T' s request, hardware disabled Qi charging on the AT&T variant. The PMA standard charges at a higher voltage than Qi. G3 battery covers that support Qi charging don't work with the AT&T variant. What is lacking for PMA charging is a choice of battery covers or just a reciever that one could put under the stock battery cover. The only way to do this is to get the pma circle case, take the the reciever out and put it onto the original battery cover.
Seems in the US, we have the inductive standard and a magnetic resonance standard. The resonance model seems superior at the moment. Both groups have joined to try to influence a world wide standard. Texas Instruments has a hardware chipset that can function with both Qi or PMA standard. Now to get someone to build a damn phone worth buying with this tech would bring it all full circle.
I think some of the reasons that PMA recievers aren't available like Qi recievers, is licensing.

Seems to me if you used the qi charging sticker and adapted the contracts to match (creating the needed gap in the middle) it should work fine

This is the ghetto yet only possible option we have.... the stupid spaced gap in the middle of the 4 contacts. wondering if the S5 stickers will work for at least the wireless charging, since the 2 contacts are for nfc and the other 2 are for wireless charging!

Take a look over at the original G3/Assecories threads. Is all been tried and failed for the reasons I've mentioned above. Kind of stinks, but there are work arounds. Am I happy with it, no. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops for wireless charging. Yes we are first adopters & like cell service in the US, it's multiple competing standards backed by differing corporate entities.
Care to enlighten me a to why it wouldn't work? Yo your "above" doesn't cover what I'm suggesting

Just spent an hour reading on the general Accessories page. I guess the coils that have the correct contacts don't work with Powermats. They tried it.

Those people seem to want to use international pma stickers... Which baffles me why and also why it wouldn't work.
What I want to do is use the qi sticker, modified to add the gap, on an att phone

Do a search on PMA VS qi and your questions will be answered. I'm not trying to be an a$$, but this topic was covered pretty well. The original G3 forum was first, this forum was started well after the original. It is missing some good info regarding this particular matter.

Take a minute to read through this whole thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/accessories/d850-qi-charging-mod-t2809994
The thread should have been migrated to the AT&T section to clear up any misinformation but it's still in the general section.
Everything has already been tried, only possible solution is probably something like what some folks have done to the Nokia 1520 > hardware transplant.
So there's a wireless communication protocol in both standards. I would guess it's being disabled on a software level since all the hardware other than the coil seems to be the same on the phone.
Perhaps if we ever get the bootloader unlocked this could change...
That's a good thread, thank you.

I'm still confident that Qi is disabled via software and can be somehow be enabled. I get that the lumia was hardware but that has been proven, too many post saying its hardware with the G3 D850 without any proof.

I found and bought a qi battery cover and have a qi charger...where the contacts align...no dough... I also have a qi sticker that plugs into microusb...that works because it's converting qi induction to standard micro usb.
For the 850, you will have to have use a pma coil to run wireless charging thru those contacts.

I know it's not a big deal but this is one of the reasons I haven't jumped on the G3 yet. I really like it except for this and some of the rumored performance/battery issues. I don't even care if I have to use PMA and replace all my charging pads but that circle case can't be my only choice!?!?

I made the jump from my N5, S5 and M8. I truly enjoy wireless charging, but this phone was too nice. I'm glad I made the switch. It does stink that the only choice is the Folio case. However, if you do need the wireless charging, you'll want to continue holding off as you have.

It is actually available now for order though, $48. The Type C connector can be raised or lowered as needed for cases.

Only thing is I'm not sure about how it actually would charge. It shows a few shots of a USB A to Micro USB cable, then a few of it with what looks like a physically attached cable.
Who's getting it to test it for me US?
http://www.gadgets4geeks.com.au/Kidigi-Omni-Case-Ready-Dock-with-USB-31-Type-C-for-Mobile-Phones
According to this one it maxes out at 2.4A
$48 bucks that a bit steep.
I'll wait for other options.
Second link has it for $39, some of their other retailers probably have it for cheaper. I'd pay that for a good dock, the TYLT VU was more expensive than that.
35 bucks is simply too much for what appears to be a plastic shell. At least with the ridiculously overpriced Vu they give you the means to power your device without having to steal a cable from elsewhere in your collection.

Damn.
The znaps adapters look kind of long and I think with the dock fully retracted it would still sit high and be unstable.
Waiting for RND to have theirs for purchase or when nakedcellphone carries them on ebay. Last year for the Nexus 6, RND had theirs available first, so I ordered from them. This exact dock was on AliExpress for bulk purchase and the USB connector had RND branding on it, so I'm sure it will be available soon as well.

It's another company that has docks. Actually they are the same docks.

It's actually on the American ebay priced @ £24.99, free shipping from China. Search "KiDiGi Omni Charger Cradle Desktop Dock for Smartphone with Type-C Charging Port". (Can't post hyperlinks yet as I'm still an XDA noob ) Ordered one myself from the UK.
Picked up on eBay for $25. They marked it shipped same day.

Let us know what you guys think when it comes in. I'm still interested in one of these but I'm willing to wait till I get one that charges fast enough.

I think that will mostly depend on what you plug it into. It doesn't come with the brick (at least its not included in the "Whats in the box" part). On Alibaba.com its rated at 1A @5V, on ebay its listed at 2A @5V. Its just a USB A to type C 2.0 cable, though so its going to charge at whatever your Type A power source is.
I won't be of much help to you as I'm not using this as a charger. I plug these docks into a USB 3.0 Hub that goes into my Mac Mini dev computer. My previous Kidigi/RND docks (same dock), didn't have the cable attached. These do. Can we modify it... probably. The other docks also had OTG support, which this one does not. I paid more for the Nexus 6 Docks though, and I never used the OTG port anyway.

Bah, you are a huge help to me.
Good points all around, some of the pictures I've seen of this one have attached cables, others show unattached cables. If it is unattached, I'm thinking 3.0A will work fine on it, they probably only tested with 2.4A chargers at max.
You know, like how the Micro SD card thing used to go? 32GB Micro SD capable, because that's the biggest one we could test with at the time.
I have just received my dock, and the Type A cable is wired straight into the dock.

This sounds like a good bedside dock, i'm not concerned with rapid charging while sleeping. That will free up my rapid charger for my living room or kitchen. Might have to consider this now. How long is the cable? 1m or 2m?
It is now listed on Amazon for $25.99

LG V20 Wireless Charging Support Confirmed!

I emailed LG asking what the contacts are for on the rear of the phone (under the battery cover), turns out I was correct in assuming they were wireless charging support:

How about the other versions?
What phones that have metal back panels support native wireless charging? Can't think of one right now.

I only emailed about my variant, but I assume if they have those contact pins around the back they will support wireless charging. The only one that may be different is the AT&T which probably only does PowerMat because they invested too much into that standard to ever give it up, lol.

This one doesn't either. You will have to replace the back with something that isn't metal (as the email suggests, their Quick Circle case). However, Qualcomm has had WiPower for years that supports wireless charging through metal phones, but no one has ever used it for some reason...

Because it's it's own standard and doesn't support Qi or PMA so that would mean people would have to buy a whole new charging pad.
The majority of manufacturers that enable wireless charging are Qi standard (Samsung supports both Qi and Powermat). If Qualcomm could somehow get iPhone to incorporate WiPower then it would basically destroy Qi/PMA overnight and Android OEM's would switch at that point.
Right now it's the whole Beta/VHS battle (if you're that old to remember), Laser Disc vs DVD (more of a late 90's battle) or most recently HDDVD vs Bluray battle thing. In the end one format will win and everyone will switch to it (not always for the best though). HDDVD was a cheaper better format but Bluray at the time offered more storage capacity and was "more secure" (even though the DRM has been stripped/broken on bluray).

Can individuals who own a LG V20 post their carrier and if they have the pins near the battery.
Im hoping the Verizon variant has the pins for wireless charging.

The T-Mobile variant does not.
There's a small gap in the area where the pins would be, but, it doesn't look like anything that could accommodate wireless charging.
Just to be clear, I'm not trying to negate any posts that point in the other direction, just posting my observations on my TMOUS LG V20.
To the contrary, I hope that somehow, wireless charging can be achieved (other than the stickers that plug into the USB port).
If an OEM LG V20 Charging Case or, battery cover becomes available, I'll order one (or both) & report my findings here.

There are 10 pins all the way around the back of the T-Mobile phone that are currently insulated from touching the metal back cover, that is what I asked about in the email to LG. They said they're used for wireless charging, maybe not all of them, but some.

I see those as well, glad to hear they are intended for wireless charging.
I do have an OEM Licensed (VOIA) Quick View Case on the way, from S. Korea , should be arriving any day now, left Seoul on 10/19/19.
With any luck, this is the one that has wireless charging on-board.....

Nah, that doesn't replace the back cover and it doesn't plug in at the bottom so I can't imagine it supporting Qi. They probably would've explicitly stated it did wireless charging.

My ATT version has those too, but I'm pretty sure they're some sort of snap for the back cover. Lay your cover next to your phone (phone with screen facing down, and cover with inside facing up), and you'll see some little squares on the cover that line up perfectly with those copper/gold pins on the phone.

Like mentioned above, those pins go to the NFC antenna that is mounted around the camera cutout in the back cover.

You are indeed correct regarding the lack of wireless charging support with the VOIA Case (not my video, but,it shows all the deets of the case)
That feature aside,if you're a fan of this style of case,it has a great fit,can be used with or without the metal backing,a nice feature in of itself if you want to use one of the QI Charging stickers that plug into the USB Port:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnB2gsR9XYI
Since people don't seem to understand what pins we're discussing, I have circled the 10 of them here... They are not the two near the camera for NFC.

Agreed! I feel like wireless charging takes forever, and if your life is like mine that 1 hour is like 1 minute (sometimes) well.... you figure you dont have all day to wait for it to reach the 100. And also to be constantly removing the device and putting it back well.. it makes it last even more .
EDIT: On the other hand, it is good to have variation. Maybe someday it wakes up my interest to buy one of those wireless charging docks. After all, that's why i currently love more lg than samsung, because it has more variation (LOVE MY IR BLASTER) !!

Best Wireless Portable Charger?

I'm seeing some on Amazon with super suspect reviews. Like, one of them has 99% 5-star reviews. Come on, dude...
Can y'all share some LEGIT portable wireless chargers? Preferably some with REAL fast charging.
I have ordered this one.,
QI wireless charger, 20000mAh, price around 35 US$.
Can tell you more in a couple of days, should I get in the next days (has unfortunately around 4 weeks delivery time).

got it now. Works more as OK for this price. Can charge also if the device is in the cover. The HW looks professional. QI charging with stand works only if you put the phone horizontal on the stand , but this is ok. Think was a good deal. Shippment needs 3 weeks.
After some weeks using I can say it was a very good deal. Works perfect with my Note 9 on travel. I can really highly recommend this QI charger. Use it on my business trips including powerpoint presentations in combination with an little HDMI adapter and on the evening to view Netflix videos in the hotel.
I don't want miss it anymore...
I've got to get that!
I think using the descriptor “best” is relative. What may work for one may not work for another.
Take this product:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077QRXLF6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
10000mah battery pack, usb 3 ports, qi standard. Display shows exact charge numerically. Even shows the voltage coming in and voltage going out of the ports and what the qi is sending out.
There is a led ring that shows light white when charging and dark blue when charged.
I like these so much I bought 3 for the 3 notes i have.
EDIT: does charge them with the samsung military grade case for the note 9 series as seen in the photos (may be hard to see the actual case but both units have the case on )
They look pretty cool. The light looks a little too bright though? Also, the top surface looks quite slippery?

Does look cool, I like the bright light, but I'd definitely want it to be optional, you wouldn't want that next to your bed when trying to sleep haha.
And yeah that super smooth surface does look like the phone would easily slide off, although it would be negated by a case that had some grip.
Not sure what happened, might just be a temporary thing, but it's currently unavailable?

That’s why i said not one product can be “best”.
I’m sure this is not designed to sit next to your bed at night. Its mostly aimed at people on the go /traveling.
The light ring is not bright. In a darkened room it will be noticeable, sure.
The top surface has plastic (shipping plastic). You can remove this plastic overlay as you see fit
Ive had these for about 3 weeks. I have used them 2-3 times per week (just to test on the charge times) and am very happy with the product price point and features.
You can also charge the product up whilst charging a qi enabled device (pass thru charging)
Does anyone make a car phone cradle holder with inbuilt wireless charger?
Sent from my SM-N960U1 using Tapatalk
Lots of people do wireless charging cradles for cars - I have an iOttie, two QiFulls and (my favourite - so good that I bought 3 of them), Samsung's own one.
https://www.samsung.com/uk/mobile-accessories/s-charger-vehicle-dock-hn910/
Of course you are right, but for me personally is size and power (20000mah) decisive. And some small things like the vertical stand, the non slippery surface and the size (like the phone itself) seem to be thought-out....

^^^ thats why there are more options out there because not everyone has the same feature requests. I don’t particualry like portable upright chargers and the fact I have 3 of these means the 10 000mAh X3 (30000mAh? ) wlli be plenty. And if they are not, i have two portable power banks.
The product i listed here is just another option in the mix... not trying to steal thunder away from any one product..

The last thing I needed was yet another power bank (I have a couple of really hefty one - 26,800 mAh from Zendure and 30,000 mAh from iMuto - as well as a whole raft of smaller ones given away free at various trade shows), but none of them do wireless so I had to get one of these as well.
Ordered it on amazon.de and it arrived here in the UK in a couple of days. Initial impressions are favourable. It charges my Note 9 even in its Spigen Tough Armor case, and I like the ability to have the phone at an angle. It also seems to do passthrough (i.e. wireless charge the Note 9 while also being charged itself).
There's a USB-C socket for input (haven't tested whether it can also be used as an output) as well as MicroUSB in and 2 x USB A outputs.
yes, is no bad

Well, getting bogged down with semantics is a waste of time. I think most of us generally agree that when we say "best" we're implying that the product performs as expected and that it suits most of our needs/wants.
That charging pad you shared looks promising but it sucks that it's no longer available on Amazon. I hope more OEMs jump into this portable wireless charging game. We need more options, that's for sure.

I feel you on this. I'm down to two right now. One big one with enough amps to charge my laptop quick enough and a smaller Anker one for everything else. I want to replace the Anker one with a wireless one. Less cables to carry around.
