Masqued crusader? - Verizon Droid Charge

I was having slow downloads...I even tried complaining to Verizon saying my 3g was going faster than my 4g...they said I might be getting better 3g signal than my 4g...SO...I found this app I paid for and didn't notice much when I had my fascinate and tried it on my CHARGE...Iam noticing download times almost cut in half...iam not sure why...does anyone know of a better internet speed enhancer or notice it being faster when using this app?

I use network signal:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet

By the looks of that app it is more for signal than enhancement. .
Tweaked 3.0 and Transparent ICS 5.0 Beta

Yeah...I looked at it...this crusader app is working but not sure if it is because it only uses dedicated servers or if it is doing it some other way...like tasker ...or an app prioritizer...I was basically asking if I had been fooled...I don't know much about it
simply tweaked 3.o...dressed in adw and other paid apps

It looks like
1. It uses Google's DNS instead of Verizon's (or whoever the stock is) which is faster by virtue
2. Also creates a local "cache" of DNS lookups for your most frequently visited sites so they load even faster.
Am I wrong? Only scratching the surface? that's all I gleaned from the description.

..but the last two test with 4g...this app was getting slower down loads than when turned off...

Are any decent Instant Messaging Apps in development?

Right then, I think I've tried every single IM app for Android, and have been disappointed with every single one. Currently installed on my Desire are the following:
-Meebo
-eBuddy
-IM+
-Nimbuzz
-Fring
NONE of these apps are adequate. They have problems that make them an incredible pain in the ass to use, and are often unreliable.
Connectivity: Meebo, eBuddy, Nimbuzz and Fring are all notoriously unreliable in holding a connection. After a few hours, they just go offline - sometimes all accounts at once, sometimes one at a time. Sooner or later, I'm sitting in front of my laptop (I've created testing accounts on ICQ and MSN just so that I can see whether the Android apps can hold a connection reliably), and I see that all the accounts that are supposed to be connected via the Android app are offline.
IM+ on the other hand, while it does die every few hours like the other apps, resurrects itself and reconnects nearly every time, but has a horrible user interface, and costs an insulting 5€ - the software is nowhere near polished enough to warrant a price like that.
So, what's on the horizon? I'd really like something with a nice UI, no connection problems and, most importantly, reliability. Even if Android kills it due to low memory (something that happens constantly on devices with 256MB of RAM or less), it should restart itself, or keep itself in memory similar to Locale or Sipdroid.
Nimbuzz is probably going to release a new version soon, but will it solve the connection issues? I doubt it. Do you guys have any secret weapons on the IM front?
i agree about our current choices....
hopefully Beejive and Trillian deliver... beejive is in beta i believe and trillian is working on it...
Trillian has announced a beta for Android.
I'll have to look into Bejive.

Any tips on getting into the respective betas?
I'm testing the new IM+ beta right now, but it's too buggy for everyday use
Just making sure, if you're using an automatic task killer, you added your IM apps to the ignore list?
No task killer, and there's always at least 100-200 MB of RAM free. Don't think I've ever had less than 100MB of RAM free on the Desire (Milestone was another story)...
Searching on the net, i found the best rated where meebo/ebuddy/fring (in this order). Ive tried a little bit meebo but i cant say i was satisfied. Are the other two alike?

Out of those three, Meebo wins hands-down, IMO.
The only usable IM client as of this moment is imo.im. Low power consumption (~5mA idle vs. ~40mA for eBuddy, Fring and so on), halfway reliable, and supports all.protocols including Skype (though chat only for the latter, of course).
Still needs to connect a little more reliably though.

Current Widget is what I use... not sure if it works on the SGS though.
Trillian is what I use, and it seems to stay online, and when it goes into "Suspend" mode it sends you an email to let you know to go online. Major problem I've had with it is that I don't like the additional battery usage, so I suspend it most of the time. And even though 7 days is an option I'm about 99% sure it only suspends for 1 day at most.

What are your impressions of it? Anything that sets it apart from the rest of the rubbish?
I'm afraid I didnt spend much time on it and definitely can't do any comparison with the other 2 I mentioned, since I never had the chance to use them. However I noticed quick drain of battery and wasn't impressed overall with the layout and functions. Then again maybe the rest are worse.
What I did though, is to install imo.im (after several failed attempts from the android market) and so far it's alright. Works fine, no d/c's, decent layout, battery seems to last longer...In the future I'll probably try ebuddy/fring for the sake of comparison.

Browser Speed

I posted this on another forum, and the conclusion was that flash support is why I've found that nearly all web pages load faster on my wife's iPhone 4 than my Thunderbolt.
I'm not really satisfied with that answer... does anybody else notice that there is a delay before web pages actually load? The delay is usually a second or more, and occurs in all the browser's I've tried so far. On my wife's iPhone 4, there is absolutely no delay on loading most sites. I've put the phones side to side, and gone to a variety of websites doing my best to press the load button at the same time. iPhone always loads the page initially quicker than the Thunderbolt.
After the second or so delay, web pages load pretty quick, but that delay really gives the feeling of a sluggish browsing experience.
Any way to remedy this? I've tried turning off flash support, but had no luck.
UPDATE: Made a quick video comparison. It's obviously NOT a well-controlled experiment . I'm sure there is a couple millisecond difference between finger pushes on each phone, but either way the iPhone loads the page quicker. I just recorded whitehouse.gov, since neither phone has been on that site AFAIK since we got them. But I assure you that the same difference happens on most other websites. I'm in a well-covered 4g area, and speed tests the past couple of weeks ranged from 10 - 20 mbps down and 6-15 mbps up, so I don't think that's the problem. I'm using the Miren browser in this video, but I've also tried Oper HD, dolphin lite, and the stock browsers.

It's not a 'problem' per se. I love the phone. I'm just wondering a) if anybody else has noticed this, and b) if anybody has any alternative explanations for why browsing, at least for me, doesn't seem blazing fast... particularly since I'm on the 4G LTE network, and the only other phone I've had experience with (iPhone) seems to have a faster browsing experience despite being limited to 3G.
The stock browser is sluggish. I have noticed the same thing with the browser hanging but only on sense roms. I switched to miren browser and all is well.

I have noticed this. I'm rooted but on the stock ROM and I see significant slowness in the browser. Sometimes the browser will not load a page at all and the bar will stay at around 75% complete and never go any further. If I close the browser and try again it will sometimes completely load but most times I just have to wait and try it later. This is not what I was experiencing when I first got it.
None of my browsers fail to begin loading the page immediately after I hit "go" :/

Coming from the Archos and ViewSonic tablets, plus Galaxy S phones, I got in the habit of only using Dolphin Browser.
My TBolt is fine in Dolphin Browser, and exceeds the Archos A70 that I use every day. I try to maintain low expectations, that way I can be positively surprised.
The stock browser works very smoothly for me on cm7, and I'm not overclocked. You could always try dolphin or opera.
xScope is my favorite for speed and features.
I only use the stock browser for Hulu now.

If my GFs iphone loaded pages more quickly than my Tbolt on 4G, I would definitely consider that a problem. What are your typical 4G download speeds? I get between 14-20 Mbps on speakeasy.net (stock browser)

Im becoming just way too frustrated... fell in love with this game but my problem is that it doesnt work consistantly. Sometimes i open the application and its blazing fast... no lag on the home screens or even ingame at the hardest levels... other times i find it to be extremely laggy or even keeps getting stuck at the loading screen. Ive tried messing up with the cpu speeds and killing other tasks and i found absolutely no correlation between number of tasks running or the CPU clock speed used. Even got it blazing fast once while underclocked... and othertimes when its on performance setting... it struggles to go through the home screens of the game....
Does any one know why this sort of inconsistency is happening? Can I fix it?
( btw if you think it might be from some unexpected apps hogging up the CPU, ive already monitored my CPU usage and removed the one app that used to do that. now whenever im on my home screen ( golauncher) my cpu usage is consistantly 25% or less )
would greatly appreciate any input. thanks guys

theres not much we can do for 3rd party apps. you would have to contact the developer of it. Not to mention youve not told us anything about your phone. or what rom you are running, you could look at cpu usage in your info menu of your inspire *#*#4636#*#*
honestly it just sounds like the app isnt compatible with what you are running.

im using an htc inspire 4G on rooted stock rom. also I was just wondering if this could be something from my settings because the occasional lag seems to happen with other games as well just not as bad as this one.
By the way, I saw that you have an ATT logo near your profile so perhaps you can help me out with another problem. An app called stocks was using up a lot of my CPU all the time so I removed it even though it was in system files. could this be part of the problem?
thanks for the help
Nope. I've got an Inspire & i always remove the stocks apk, as well as others, as soon as i load a new ROM

Have you removed anything else from there. Like, did you root it just to remove the stocks app? What all have you loaded/deleted.
I only have the att icon because i use their service. Ive always removed apps i dont use, stocks, twitter, the social network stuff ive never heard of etc etc. never had any issues.
i rooted to get proxydroid then removed the stocks app coz it was just taking up so much cpu all the time... appart from that all other apps are well behaved if u will and i kept them
anyways i figured it out and its a weird reason. it seems like whenever im getting a bad wifi reception the entire thing goes slow ... if i turn off wifi other apps are fast again but gunbros for whatever reason is still slow untill i turn it back on and move closer to a router... i gues nit miust be an app flow... will try to retest this ans confirm my theory later

[Q] Higher battery drain with Wifi off?

I've noticed with at least my Infuse that whenever I have my Wifi on I have significantly lower battery drain than when I have it off. I'm currently running Aeon 1.4 with Entropy's kernel but have noticed this with other kernels and ROMs that I've used. Screenshot attached showing that pretty much as soon as the wireless is turned off the battery usage takes a sudden drop and continues until it comes back on. Is there an issue with my phone or are there some settings that I should be aware of and try changing to remedy the issue?
I tried searching around before I made this thread and couldn't find anything that had the same issues I've been having. Any input would be appreciated.

I see what you are talking about, however I think the issue is less with your wifi being off as it is with your cell signal being low. Looking at the cap you provided I can see where in the second wifi off period you could think that the wifi was your problem, but look at the first. you have the same drain with the wifi off as you do with it turned on (practically). Change the modem. Find one that works great in your area, because with the modems for the infuse newer is not always better. Also you can try one of those little RF booster things that go on your phone behind the battery to boost signal. I know they seem like a scam, but they do sometimes give just enough boost to keep a phone from searching for signal when it should have great signal. But try flashing a new modem first.

I'll have to start looking around for a new modem, currently I'm on UCLB3; my only concern is this is the only modem to provide me with a quick GPS lock and I don't want to lose that ability. Thanks for the suggestion
Check the modem thread. I had some great luck with an older one (k1 I think it was). I have since passed on my infuse to my son, and I can ping his location within 15 yards in under 2 minutes. I have a post over there where I got 5 days of battery life and it should tell you the modem I was using as well as rom and other info about the setup I had.

Giving FTL Launcher Lite a shot, if it doesn't work out or if it's not recommended I'll try out Launcher Pro, thanks again!
I tried it for a couple days, was not my cup of tea. But it had outstanding reviews so I gave it a shot. I think I ended up going to LPP or ADW with the infuse.
A few other things to check are: Make sure your phone is not always scanning for wifi networks.
If you are in an area of low cell signal and don't need your phone to call people, flip on airplane mode.
Turn off auto brightness... use the power widget (or the 17 notification toggle tweak) to change your brightness between 10% (low light) 20% (medium light) and full (when in bright daylight conditions).
There is somewhere a tweak to turn off H+ and 3G when not in those service areas, find it, use it. (Google *#*#4636#*#* or is it *#*#3646#*#*... idfk one of those...
Check your sns sync schedule for short times. Set them to a longer interval or off. You should check ALL sync schedules for this, calendar is a major culprit of this, even if you don't have one setup.
Install "badass battery monitor" use it to check wake locks and battery voltage and temp. It has a great "battery sucker" feature that will tell you what is draining your battery.
NEVER USE AUTO APP KILLERS! They do more harm than good. Hold home and open the task manager and kill the apps yourself. It will take 15 seconds and if you do it for 3 days a few times a day, it becomes a habit. Don't be all grrr and do it 60000000 times a day. Just every now and then.
If you have installed a few apps and launchers that didn't work out for you, I would say booting into recovery and clearing the cache or a reset are in order. Uninstalls rarely remove everything they should and leave behind bits of code that will suck your battery like a hidden mosquito you can never swat.
Probably the most helpful tidbit anyone can give you is to not stress over the battery life constantly. You have a wonderful device that you have spent a lot of time customizing to look the way you want it to look. The more you stress over the battery the more you will check it, turning on that big beautiful screen sucking even more life from it. Making user error the major battery sucker in the equation... You wanted that beautiful beast, enjoy it.
Sorry so long, but trying to be thorough and helpful. These are the major tips I used to get 5 days from my phone. But honestly after day 2 or 3 I started really cracking the whip and refused to use my phone for anything other than texting.

Its been about the same, possibly a bit better. I've been using the battery app you mentioned to find what's causing the drain and kinda working with it from there. However I was in an area with roaming for a week so I can't give an accurate conclusion.
The BCM4330's standby drain is extremely low. In addition, when active, it requires FAR less energy per byte of data transferred than the cell radio.
OF COURSE background syncs are going to use less power over wifi than over the cell radio.
The whole "turn your wifi off" to save power became invalid over a year ago. (Exception: If the wifi chip misbehaves, such as the infamous BT-AMP bug, but I haven't seen that in many months.)
Here a couple of threads I found regarding this mystery drain.
From the past:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224052&highlight=battery
Here is the i9000 battery drain issue I was refering to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696
The last few pages hinted that the problem may have been fixed in later gb builds.
Our custom kernels was based of Roger's 2.3.3.
Would the bug be still in it?
Could this be why we (at least me anyway) are still seeing this?

[ROM][MB1][5/28] ZERO v1.2

Completely developed on the device for the device. Not one computer was used.
IF YOUR BATTERY LIFE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO YOU IN THE WORLD THIS MAY NOT BE FOR YOU!
Battery life hasn't been thoroughly tested and not expected to be great.
Welcome to ROM ZERO.
ZERO was developed for one purpose. SPEED! You will open apps, download, install apps, and browse the web faster than before. This rom is based on USABILITY SPEED and may not show in benchmarks. It's two totally different things. Battery life is not expected to be great but hasn't been tested so please Don't complain about your battery life. I would like some feedback on the battery life but as I said, don't expect much.
This is a stock rom lightly debloated with a few nice tweaks. I have added my yamato performance edition tweaks and some scripting in the frame buffer to help speed things up. This will give you higher frame rates in games and overall speed. Lean kernel is preloaded and completely over clocked including the GPU out of the box. There is no need to lkconfig. The GPU governor is also automatically set to performance mode. There are alot of adjustments made to this rom for speed. It's FAST.
SO WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE?
De-odexed system with ODEXED apps.
Lightly debloated.
Black & white toggles.
Black status bar.
4.2 keyboard.
Menu to kill.
Holo & stock TW launchers.
Adjusted Bluetooth for quicker connections
Complete rewrite of the build.prop and included all of my HWUI settings for speed and a better visual experience.
Frame buffer speed adjustments.
Full HW rendering.
GPU over-clocked.

I just posted a dropbox link in the op. See if that works better for you. The original link is working fine for me though.
I can start the hotspot from the status bar on top, but when I connect to my phone, get either a Limited Connectivity error or no connection at all. I can take some screenshots when I get home if that would help, maybe the app has an error log that I can find.
Just flashed, had no issues. Everything seems nice and smooth. Its also visually very smooth. Coming from clean ROM I would say as far as "speed" at least opening apps and such Clean ROM is faster, but Zero is very fluid. No issues with lag. I havent tested much else. So far so good though. Nice work and thanks! Its been kind of quiet on the forums since the S4 came out.
Unfortunately I found an issue this morning with some of the scripts loading. This rom is currently not running as I intended it as far as speed. The update tonight will be a huge difference in performance! Sorry about the bug.

Crap thats a big battery. How much time do you usually get out of that?
Nice! Could you possibly remove Backup Assistant from settings? Always bothers me.
EDIT: Also, it's not allowing the setup wizard to complete. This is the only way to get my apps to auto-restore so could you look into it?

Well it's obviously easy enough to remove the app itself but removing the tab from the settings menu isn't something I have ever dove into yet. For me it's a bit complicated and over my head right now. I'm going to have to read up on setting tabs and learn a bit more about it. Probably in version 5.0 lol.
Edit @Your edit..
Darn another flaw! Ugghhh! Yes I will.
