I know there are countless threads related to G2x Problems but none of the threads are focusing on isolating the reasons of Freezing Issue. I have recently upgraded my phone from Galaxy S Vibrant to G2x and i have to say i love the hardware and performance. Only Issue for me is random freezing.
After using the phone for 2 weeks and trying 3 roms
1. Stock
2. EB 1.04
3. Dark Sinister 1.1
I have come to a conclusion that kernel and rom is not the solution. At least not for me.
So i will try to solve the problem using hardware testing.
From my past 2 weeks experience.
1. Phone Freezes at night during charging
2. Phone Freezes when ever i turn off/on wifi and bluetooth and gps and Data (4g/3g) (Still have to figure out which of them is the cause. Cause i usually turn all off when i need to save battery).
Test Day 1
For Reason 1
I am using SetCpu and have changed Min from 216 to 312Mhz. I am trying this because i think very low cpu usage in standby for a very long period causes the phone to freeze. Its a Hunch i am not sure.
For Reason 2
I will keep wifi, Bluetooth and GPS off.
I will keep 4g/3g Data On all the time.
To My Surprise its been 16 hours no freeze. It includes charging at night. Lets see how long i can go without a freeze. Upon freezing i will make some changes.
Update 31/5/2011 (Test Day 2)
Ok its been more than 40 hours and not a single crash...
I removed the following possibilities as well....
It wont crash upon excessive usage.
Also Normal Heat up does not cause the crash.
As i have been playing Samurai II Vengeance all day long... Until I ended it. Several times charging along playing. I even played it on TV using HDMI. Not a single crash. I used to have around 3 crashes a day on stock rom when i unboxed my new G2x.
I also started using GPS from today. So lets see how it goes. I will update it every 24 hour.
Update 3/6/2011 (Test Day 5)
Ok i am considering Random Freezing On standby as solved because i havent had a single freeze at night after setting CPU Clock at 312 MHz using SetCPU. There are also other comments that back up my solution. I am considering this the solution of one problem.
2nd Issue of freezing while using cell phone apps is because of certain applications that are either buggy or not compatible with tegra Platform. For that i will start another thread with individual application testing for all apps that can cause the system to freeze or crash.

All you have to do is be careful what apps you install. I've had the phone for over a month and the one time it rebooted or froze was when I used an app the phone didn't agree with.
I am almost certain that people are experiencing reboots and freezing because of the apps they have on their phone. Hopefully the update will solve the problem because it shouldn't be that way.

In my opinion, the shut down has to do with temperature of the phone. As long as I keep the phone cool by not charging and multitask with other things, then my phone is fine.

I used to think the same thing but the problem is my phone gets hot and works fine. I am almost positive it has something to do with an issue in the kernel that's being exposed by certain apps. My Xoom on release had reboots and SOD and it went away with app updates and removals. It also has Tegra 2

Do you or @kangxi remember what Apps gave you issues?
it has to be a driver issue, its virtually the only explanation for why devs have not hammered it out yet or even CM7 team for that matter... it has problems on pure AOSP which leaves drivers or overheating (unlikely)... LG has to come up with the fix because they know their drivers and hardware better than everyone else...
Well the obvious problem I see is that they are all based on the stock rom. Try using one build from AOSP or a CM variety.
I didn't stay stock long but I did have reboot using the leaked Gingerbread (which is what EB is built from). I don't follow it but one is based off the stock 2.2.2 rom and the other is based off the leaked 2.3.3 rom.
I had nothing but problems with the stock roms. Thus your problem I think. Move over to Bionic, CM7, Gigglebread, or something.
I tested my phone and I didn't have a reset in like 5 days (which then my battery died overnight because I forgot to plug it in). I usually crackflash the CM nightlies and haven't had any problems with reboots or any issues requiring a reboot (aside from the flashlight killing audio, but just don't use it).
There are definitely two problems - software and the battery. I used to way more problems until I exchanged the battery for a new one and that solved most of my issues. The issues that remain are definitely software based.

Thanks for this information/ Changing the minimum speed didnt affect the battery life but it has survived two nights without crashing. So i am planning to keep it at 312Mhz min.

I Completely Agree with you. Some Applications do cause system crashes. But I have removed all the t-mobile bloatware and i only have few games and GPS apps. All games are from tegra zone. So I am sure they are supported.
For GPS App i am using Copilot and it didnt crash on me once.
I just installed setcpu and set minimum to 312. I'm keeping everything else the same to see if this change has any difference. Will report back.

Looks like you are gaining progress. Sounds like keeping the processor revved up a little more does the trick.
It would be a simple fix for people to try that have reboot issues. I can't get mine to reboot, so unfortunately I cannot help you. My contribution was to resist from flashing for as long as possible to test how long I could get my "uptime" to. I got up to 127 hours when I passed out without charging it.
I'm running 20 hours now because I forgot to charge it again (seems to be my only problem, lol).
Looks like you may have fixed your rebooting issues. It sounds feasible that the clock speed could be causing it. I never had a reboot so I can't help you out but I can tell you that I have a profile under SETCPU that clocks it at 216 min and 216 max when the display is off and I don't have a problem. I wonder why the low clock speeds would only effect certain devices? Maybe it's certain apps that stay running in the background (since there poorly written) that require higher clock speeds than what the G2X gives at idle?

I've definitely noticed that the G2X wakes up faster and smoother (fade in from screen off) when min is set to 312mhz that's for sure. if this is all it will take to stop the reboots, I'll be super happy because otherwise this phone is just amazing.

Have you noticed any changes in battery usage? I haven't really played around with SETCPU much but can the clock speed be set lower and if it can, have you tried slightly lower settings than 312mhz?
y are u guys using setcpu? and its def cuz the min is too low faux has his at 400 and no problems morfic also has his a little higher then what is it i think 216?? thats too low thats y setcpu isnt supported yet.....pimp my cpu
Someone asked me a question earlier. Only app I had issues with was fring. Soon as I opened it and started playing around with it, phone rebooted.
I uninstalled and it never happened again.

well thats y it works for u, u cant overclock over a thousand mhz so in ur situation ur ok i guess it only applies for people running a custom kernel then setcpu doesnt work, then u would need pimp my cpu
So my Xoom was running really sluggish at times. so I said the heck with it, backed up what I needed and whipd it out!
it still seems pretty sluggish. not terible, but there are a lot of things that are not nearly as smooth as it should be.
the Tablet WAS rooted, and with another Kernal, but i put it all back to stock (I think) and still seems a little off.

Stock is the most sluggish. On top of overclocked cpu, I use overclocked gpu kernel as well and the ADW EX launcher. That's a prescription for butter smoothness.

Even when you get everything set up the way you want it, things get laggy sometimes.
I do the following: reboot to refresh the system, free up ram by various means, including making sure that no memory hogs are running in the background, etc...Autostart root app helps to keep stuff from starting at or just after boot,which helps you manage your memory too.
Also make sure you are using the interactive (or lagfree if you so desire) governor for your kernel. That solved my laggyness problem with my refurb.

What is lagfree? Is it a kernel? How to get that?
Is there a good app to show what is using the most memory or resources so i can uninstall? I use advanced task killer and it kills my apps every now and then and performance improves but they comr back even thougj i didnt run them. How can i prevent apps from loading into mem except when i launch. I went to their settings and disables anything that runs on interval but they still run.

Note; currently i am 3.2.1 rooted.
As I said, Auto Starts is a great app to control what runs automatically. I also use Active apps to show me what is running so I can close it if needed. There are a number of good root apps that can do the trick. Why not check out the list in the Xoom Heaven thread at the top of page one of the General Forum.

Even bone stock the Xoom is not sluggish. I would say there is a problem or you did not fully wipe the device. On some devices the kernel could potentially cause a problem.
If memory is not super low, connection speeds is usually the culprit.
I'm running Virtuous Inquisition 3.5 and I've noticed when memory gets low (less than 60mb free) the phone gets incredibly sluggish, and I've had it basically freeze for minutes while I wait (eventually memory does become available and it is functional again). This usually happens when I'm using Dolphin browser because it uses a lot of memory by itself (over 150mb usually).
I noticed a lot of inactive programs caching memory, and if I use a task killer widget I can free up memory to not have this happen (although eventuallly the killed programs come back in the background and I'm left in the same situation). I also have Dolphin cache to sd card which helps somewhat, but I was wondering is anyone else having this issue, and if so, is there an app or something else you can recommend to free up ram in the background so I don't have to manually clear it all the time? Or even an app that prevents inactive programs from caching ram?
I was having the same issue. I'm not sure why it wasn't managing memory like it should but since then I flashed ARHD and shizlon theme and I basically have an AOSP looking ROM with the goodies of Sense. Which is what Virtuous Inquisition is trying to accomplish.

I'm also having this same issue, the best I have been able to do to deal with it is get a task manager and set the auto kill to aggressive or crazy when the screen is off. It is definitively not the greatest solution though, but, for the time being it is working.
i know it's an old thread, but i started experiencing this issue lately on my Sensation 4G (T-mobile USA)
Currently I am running 6.7.0 ARHD with stock kernel. Phone was superwiped before installing ARHD. And it works, but i am having like 90 MB free memory and with gives me warring of low memory all the time and lags like hell, sometimes it's like frozen for a minute.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I close my apps Times to times and usually I never let it go under 120mb I tried once had 60 mb free and it started freezing and become almost unfunctional.. Closed my apps and everything worked again

Have you guys tried tweaking minfrees? If you know what you're doing you can use SystemTuner. Otherwise you can use the supercharger script. If you don't want the launcher locked in memory you can skip it but apply the minfree tweaks. You can choose how aggressive or light you want it to be. No problem Set the first 3 at relatively low amounts 30-60 and gradually work up towards the last one around 120-150 and see how it works out.
Hey, yes that has some effect. So far so good after a day of use. Facebook still gives me some trouble, but much better that it was before. Again thanks for the tip.
Now if I find out why my screen get as hot as barbeque grill even with stock kernel, and solve my 4G speed issues (although the latest I blame on T-Mobile) this will be the best phone ever lol xD
Hey! Here I am again. Heat issues- try latest Sebastian Kernel. Don't overclock GPU. Haven't had many issues with that kernel. 4G I'm really.not sure :/ for one my sensation isn't 4G and 2 the max 4G speed here is about 2.5mb per sec..... Sad story.. But there are some tweaks for 4G lying around. And there's also a 3G supercharger script that MIGHT help. Worth a shot All it does is modify your build.prop values. it does have some effect for me. try if you like Good luck
hey thanks again, I did try different kernals that come with ARHD, sebastian is one of them, my HTC is hot with all of them. Might be just the phone. thats why left stock after last re flash. also do you happen to have a link for the 4G tweaks / 3G script? i am willing to give it a shot. I am not techie by any mean, but i can handle simple flashing and stuff like this

Latest downloads at the bottom of the post. No flashing required either. Just install Script manager from the market and run it as root. Sorry but I can't find the 4G tweaks :/ Will let you know if I do.

I've installed it last night. My usual morning lag that I experience wasn't there so I believe there is some merit to what this mod is supposed to provide. I'll be tracking the battery life, as that's more important to me than a reboot once a day.
Yes I can also confirm that this app works. Even makes one of my slowest apps (amazon appstore) open much faster. Everything is a bit quicker.
My only concern is battery life, which I am going to be testing over the weekend. Loving the mod so far though.
I can verify this works well use to take close to a minut to load my xda ap lol. Not so any more. Also switching from app drawer to home screen, no lag. I used v6 supercharger for a while and i think that for now im just gonna use this. My phome is much more responsive than it use to be, especially when opening my settings menu. I will be paying attention to battery as well. Thanks for your work.
Edit. My cpu clock speed magically set it self to 1552. Dont ask me how that happened cuz i dont know. Now normally at this speed my phone would freeze. How do i know this? Cus its happened on more than one occasion. I dont overclock anymore because of it. I ran this app all day with no adverse effects. I cant say one way or another if this app works because i dont know when my phone was set to overclock. With the controversy surrounding this.... Im glad i didnt pay 1.50 for it or id feel like a really dumb***

Yes it's bullish**. The whole explanation for this mod doesn't make sense and I just can't figure out how this would help at all. As RC said excellently, it would simply prevent I/O functions to go to sleep and keep your CPU higher. TL;DR : Raise your CPU clocks, change your I/O scheduler and you'll get better performances.
One more thing... I dont know when my phone was set to overclock but here are some interesting screen shots for you.
This is a 1500Mah stock battery. The original batter. I got with the phone over a year ago btw.

Isn't faster performance accomplished by keeping the I/O constantly running and the CPU at higher clock speed than it would otherwise be?
Call me crazy but using this made my phone constantly stay in deep sleep! I've never, ever seen my phone stay asleep for so long and so consistently before.

I've been using this mod for a little over a week. While RC might be right about what this mod really is doing, my phone hasn't been snappier. As for battery life, I've lost about 10% more battery a day using this. I've got the Anker 2800mWh battery, and at the end of the day I'm usually sitting around 55-60% battery remaining. On hard use days I'd be around 30% battery remaining. Overall I'm still getting a full days use out of the phone.
If someone could suggest what scheduler I should use (instead of this mod) then I'd gladly try RC's suggestion and see if he is right as well.
I have a Sensation 4G running Android Revolution HD 6.7.2 (bought used, came with, never changed it). I'm generally pretty happy with this situation, but there are two specific situations where it just slows to a crawl. As far as i can recall, it's always been this way for these two situations. (I've been using the phone with this ROM for about a year.)
The first situation is when I install any new app or even an update for an app. For several minutes after that, everything is very sluggish. I can still use the phone, but it's a huge pain. This is true whether or not I try to use the just-installed app or update. My best guess about this (and it's only a guess) is that the slow-down is due to populating the Dalvik cache for the new/updated app. Still, that seems like it ought to be a background thing with only minor impact on foreground performance.
The second situation is when I run the Chrome browser. Other browsers (native, FireFox, Puffin) are just fine. When I run Chrome, things really, really, really tank. When I use the developer option to overlay the load average on the screen, I've seen it go as high as 65. I don't care what kind of phone hardware you have ... if your load average is 65, you are not having a good day. Anyhow, things stay zonked pretty much forever, even if I don't actually do anything in Chrome, and even if it's in the background. I've waited literally hours hoping that something just had to "settle", but no luck. I often resort to a battery pull after Chrome experiments because it's too sluggish to wait for the power button long press. (I have Chrome on a couple other mobile devices, and it behaves just fine there.)
Anybody got any clues about things for me to try to alleviate by undeserved suffering?

7.3 has just come out,with very few problems reported.

Long ago, on another phone, I was one of those guys who regularly flashed ROMs in chase of ... something (I forget what ). Now, I'm just a guy who wants to use his phone every day with the zillion little application customizations and preferences and whatnot. If I decided to endure the pain of setting everything up again (and I'm probably exaggerating that pain in my brain-pan), I'd probably just flash back to stock. Although the ROM might be the problem, the specific nature of the two problems makes me hope/think/wonder that it might be just some setting somewhere that needs a punch in the arm.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Maybe I'll go poke around the changelogs for Android Revolution and see what's to see.

My best guess about this (and it's only a guess) is that the slow-down is due to populating the Dalvik cache for the new/updated app. Still, that seems like it ought to be a background thing with only minor impact on foreground performance.
The second situation is when I run the Chrome browser. Other browsers (native, FireFox, Puffin) are just fine. When I run Chrome, things really, really, really tank. When I use the developer option to overlay the load average on the screen, I've seen it go as high as 65. I don't care what kind of phone hardware you have ... if your load average is 65, you are not having a good day. Anyhow, things stay zonked pretty much forever, even if I don't actually do anything in Chrome, and even if it's in the background. I've waited literally hours hoping that something just had to "settle", but no luck. I often resort to a battery pull after Chrome experiments because it's too sluggish to wait for the power button long press. (I have Chrome on a couple other mobile devices, and it behaves just fine there.)
Anybody got any clues about things for me to try to alleviate by undeserved suffering?

The first issue is because of our slow internal memory. The stall happening when updating/installing an app is because of long I/O waits it probably might happen over other custom roms you try here too but not as long as you said.. I used to have sluggish behavior couple of seconds after app installation (max 10 seconds). Now the only roms which were able to bypass this issue were the sense 4+ jellybean roms viz revelation / viperS 3.1.0 roms. If you want to prevent this annoying issue then change to either of those above roms.. Somehow jellybean roms were able to keep those I/O waits less.
Now to the second issue.. Sensation by default has less ram (yes 768 MB is not enough for ics/JB roms). Now when you fill your device with apps due to true multitasking nature of the Android lots of apps keep on running in the background (even restarting by themselves when killed). And Chrome is one Ram eating b***h it at least needs 50MB of memory (where other browsers like dolphin browser can run smooth over 20MB ram) so it's always slow for me takes ages to open up properly. So my suggestion is switch to different browser or install an app called "greenify" (rooted app.. You need to give root permissions) . The advantage of using this greenify app is it can hibernate persistent apps.. Thus giving you enough ram and battery. Greenify is one acclaimed rooted app which does what it says. Try it and see how the device is doing after this

FWIW, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to the latest ARHD. At first glance, it seems to have dealt with these two performance items. However, I'm still installing/configuring some of the assorted junk I had before. I'm on the lookout for the one thing that clobbers me and will report here if I find such a thing. (I'm also working through a couple of FCs of system stuff, but that's not for this thread.)
