I'm running Virtuous Inquisition 3.5 and I've noticed when memory gets low (less than 60mb free) the phone gets incredibly sluggish, and I've had it basically freeze for minutes while I wait (eventually memory does become available and it is functional again). This usually happens when I'm using Dolphin browser because it uses a lot of memory by itself (over 150mb usually).
I noticed a lot of inactive programs caching memory, and if I use a task killer widget I can free up memory to not have this happen (although eventuallly the killed programs come back in the background and I'm left in the same situation). I also have Dolphin cache to sd card which helps somewhat, but I was wondering is anyone else having this issue, and if so, is there an app or something else you can recommend to free up ram in the background so I don't have to manually clear it all the time? Or even an app that prevents inactive programs from caching ram?
I was having the same issue. I'm not sure why it wasn't managing memory like it should but since then I flashed ARHD and shizlon theme and I basically have an AOSP looking ROM with the goodies of Sense. Which is what Virtuous Inquisition is trying to accomplish.
Look at my signature for my complete setup

I'm also facing this problem and i'm also looking for an app hopefully to resolve this... I'm on Virtuous Inquisition version 3.50....
I'm also having this same issue, the best I have been able to do to deal with it is get a task manager and set the auto kill to aggressive or crazy when the screen is off. It is definitively not the greatest solution though, but, for the time being it is working.
i know it's an old thread, but i started experiencing this issue lately on my Sensation 4G (T-mobile USA)
Currently I am running 6.7.0 ARHD with stock kernel. Phone was superwiped before installing ARHD. And it works, but i am having like 90 MB free memory and with gives me warring of low memory all the time and lags like hell, sometimes it's like frozen for a minute.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I close my apps Times to times and usually I never let it go under 120mb I tried once had 60 mb free and it started freezing and become almost unfunctional.. Closed my apps and everything worked again

Have you guys tried tweaking minfrees? If you know what you're doing you can use SystemTuner. Otherwise you can use the supercharger script. If you don't want the launcher locked in memory you can skip it but apply the minfree tweaks. You can choose how aggressive or light you want it to be. Don't use task killers if you can help it and setting task killers while screen off screws with your multitasking. If you need help PM me and ill help you when I next get online.
hi Pjay12,
I just installed system tuner and set some limits to mem used, seems less sluggish, we'll see... TY for the tip

No problem Set the first 3 at relatively low amounts 30-60 and gradually work up towards the last one around 120-150 and see how it works out.
Hey, yes that has some effect. So far so good after a day of use. Facebook still gives me some trouble, but much better that it was before. Again thanks for the tip.
Now if I find out why my screen get as hot as barbeque grill even with stock kernel, and solve my 4G speed issues (although the latest I blame on T-Mobile) this will be the best phone ever lol xD
Hey! Here I am again. Heat issues- try latest Sebastian Kernel. Don't overclock GPU. Haven't had many issues with that kernel. 4G I'm really.not sure :/ for one my sensation isn't 4G and 2 the max 4G speed here is about 2.5mb per sec..... Sad story.. But there are some tweaks for 4G lying around. And there's also a 3G supercharger script that MIGHT help. Worth a shot All it does is modify your build.prop values. it does have some effect for me. try if you like Good luck
hey thanks again, I did try different kernals that come with ARHD, sebastian is one of them, my HTC is hot with all of them. Might be just the phone. thats why left stock after last re flash. also do you happen to have a link for the 4G tweaks / 3G script? i am willing to give it a shot. I am not techie by any mean, but i can handle simple flashing and stuff like this
Here's the 3G script -
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021
Latest downloads at the bottom of the post. No flashing required either. Just install Script manager from the market and run it as root. Sorry but I can't find the 4G tweaks :/ Will let you know if I do.
Edit- the scripts name is 3GTurboCharger_Installer_Update_3_RC11_Test_1.sh.pdf

I would like to know what are your guys readings of RAM usage. Mine sits around 240MB/339MB
Is that high or normal? I do have quite a bit of widgets on different home screens so I dont know what the baseline is. Please share your results.
Good topic I was wondering this myself ...
Average ram I have is about 128MB free out off 339MB

Task MAnagers!?!?!
I'm not sure if i am 100% right about this maybe won of the senior members who does know can enlighten us on this...
But I remember reading somewhere that task managers some times can hurt your phones RAM usage. I don't use one anymore unless it comes stock. and then I rarely find a reason to open it on mine. In standby I am running around 80-100 with 200-300 of freem RAM so with the SGS4G i don't think i will find a reason to use more than the stock utilities. I somtimes will installl a tool to monitor the RAM to see what I'm usin but every once in a while I go through and uninstall anything I don't need right away. I figure ussually being in good internet coverage I can always put something back.
So does anyone else know about wether or not the "Task Manager" could actually be a tantric in some cases?

So widgets are the ram hog on this phone? I have been constantly clearing ram in the task manager to help with speed. I only run clock, battery, and calender widgets on my device. Are they enough to boost me all the way to 240+ even after a RAM clearing? Considering the age of this thread is this still the case with new ROM's that are starting to roll out? I'm still stock, and very noob to android devices, but the urge for mods is growing given the positive responses to them.

You shouldn't have to worry too much about RAM usage. A lot of it used by the OS. But yeah widgets does lower it and whatever app you're using. But I hope you don't resort to using task killers just to save 50mb's of RAM. It's there for use and shouldn't be looked at too much.
Mine shows about 400/626, but haven't noticed any big difference in battery drain when it's at 300/626.
Simple answer....everything hogs ram. The best way to tell what's worse is settings » applications » manage applications and watch your ram usage when you have certain things running. You will notice what is hogging more than others.

Thank you for the info everybody. Been ruinning just fine all day with the ram almost maxed out, hard to break that task manager habit though lol. Goona keep reading before I root-flash-mod need to make sure I get it right the first time.
On the moon our weekends are so advanced they encompass the entire week
Samsung and Tmo set many bloatware to run ALL the time and hogs RAM
via Linda file manager and auto memory manager (which tweak's android's memory management, not a standard task killer), i saw many apps that always run (many with priority equals to android system and the phone app) such as "wifi calling, visual voice mail, my account, qik, device management, drm, etc.
not everyone use these apps and they take up precious RAM and tiny amount of CPU cycles.
worse, however, is how the phone keeps loading unused, unaccessed, unwanted apps into memory (been weeks since I used pandora, yet it keeps getting reloaded into memory).
from clean boot, I get 150mb free. after a week, I get 45-55mb. This causes memory manager to kill off app as soon as you switch away and alot of stutter (dont you hate it when your browser gets killed)
Dont know if theres a fix for this. I tried tweaking the OOM parameters but it doesnt seem to work on this phone. Samsung probably tweaked something that broke this.
Im not sure why but in the past week, my phone ram was was quite low. (30m - 45m) Before that, even after playing games and stuff, the ram was always above 55m. I have the go sms app, i have lookout running always and battery notifier (big text) to tell me my battery level. these were the apps that i downloaded just before the raam went low. oh and i only have 4 widgets running on my screen. (google search widget, power control widget (the one with options to toggle wifi, bluetooth etc etc on and off), a go taskmanager widget to show me how much ram i have and a music app widget) BTW im rooted running stock 2.1. Hope someone can help me!

must've been the services or processes running hidden in the background. there are some apps you can use to kill or stop them. but mainly i just use autokiller memory optimizer to modify android's default app killer to kill apps even when the ram is not very low(it kills apps when ram reaches a certain level). theres also a function in autokiller memory optimizer which allows you to kill processes. if you want more ram, you could use swap too, but it eats more battery, so i dont.
its a good app, and you dont have to use any task killers anymore. you can use the strict preset in the app if you want higher free ram. swap if you activate swap, you could go up to more than 100m free.

oh ya i forgot to mention i have already been using autokiller memory optimizer at strict level for a month already. yesterday i changed it to aggressive hoping that my ram would increase but to no avail.
then it'd be that you have to many processes running it in the background. see from autokiller memory optimizer. just tap to close. swap gives you a LOT of free ram also. but you have to be using a swap compatible rom of course, so stock but rooted, no. unless u are using the eclair strikes back rom. im also on stock singapore but rooted. average free ram now is around 50 and im underclocked running at 500mhz cos i wanna save battery. its still running smoothly. actually, i dont really care about how much free ram there is, if its smooth then its all right for me. is your phone running smoothly?

My suggestion would be to flash the stock Cincinnati bell sbf. I did that recently it is the most updated one from Motorola and is set at 720 MHz by default. I don't use anything and my ram is around 55-60. Smooth as hell. I use launcherpro. Its prettier, you can choose the keep in memory option which stops it from redrawing the screen. Mine is rooted. I get a day and half of battery life with wifi and autosync in 100% of the time, an hour of GPS, 1 hour gaming, one hour music and the odd texts or calls. Hope that helps. Nothing in my opinion beats stock 2.1

If you have 30m-45m ram and it didn't affect the performance of the phone, then nothing to worry....now if your rom is in the 2.1 stock, you have a problem especially in using camcorder due to low memory... my suggestion is to flash the 2.2 rom like wahhu rom, xda special or the cm6...My ram is in the range of 30m-60m and I'm using the wanhu rom and even the cm6 rom still the performance of the phone is great..... Actually there is something in the phone that eats the ram..... It is one of the reasons why there is a problem in porting the cm7.
P.S. Try to flash the original wanhu rom then apply the latest update of Mioze-update-SC_2.2_XT720_Beta3a-Mz05 and the dark froyo theme.....

Even when you get everything set up the way you want it, things get laggy sometimes.
I do the following: reboot to refresh the system, free up ram by various means, including making sure that no memory hogs are running in the background, etc...Autostart root app helps to keep stuff from starting at or just after boot, which helps you manage your memory too.
Also make sure you are using the interactive (or lagfree if you so desire) governor for your kernel. That solved my laggyness problem with my refurb.

Hi
What is lagfree? Is it a kernel? How to get that?
Is there a good app to show what is using the most memory or resources so i can uninstall? I use advanced task killer and it kills my apps every now and then and performance improves but they comr back even thougj i didnt run them. How can i prevent apps from loading into mem except when i launch. I went to their settings and disables anything that runs on interval but they still run.
Thanks.
Note; currently i am 3.2.1 rooted.
As I said, Auto Starts is a great app to control what runs automatically. I also use Active apps to show me what is running so I can close it if needed. There are a number of good root apps that can do the trick. Why not check out the list in the Xoom Heaven thread at the top of page one of the General Forum.
Thanks for the reply I will give that a try...
I noticed having a lot of open browser tabs kills the speed big time.

Even bone stock the Xoom is not sluggish. I would say there is a problem or you did not fully wipe the device. On some devices the kernel could potentially cause a problem.
If memory is not super low, connection speeds is usually the culprit.
Hi,
I use the newest AOSP+ and Glados 2.7 kernel on my Nexus S. I experience a lot of lags while opening apps. I tap on the icon, the app launches and I wait 1-4 seconds (depending on the app) then the content is loaded. No matter if it is SMS app, Call logs, Facebook, even Market or Appbrain. Usually after the reboot things go well for a while. But then everything slow down. Even the apps as native Phone app in ICS is very very slow while opening even though it is not killed. I think it is something with RAM, right? I used to have HTC Desire (the first model) and my Nexus is at the same speed!!! It is not right!
Can you help me with this? Where is the problem?

Ok, I did a full wipe, reflashed and got back all the apps using Titanium Backup. I get the same problem again. Before I installed all the apps, phone was really much faster. I do not know where is the problem.
What causes app opening lags? Shall I somehow track RAM to find out? Or what? Can some widgets on homescreens cause lags? Or Go Launcher?
I am really desperate. I use just stable ROM and kernels and my phone is still lagy as I would have two years old smartphone (

This is weird. I never had this problem. Maybe try unrooting and flashing back to stock. Then updating the the official 2.3.6 which will be avail once u flash back to stock. See if the stock rom is slow as well

I have experienced the same that you have, with my Nexus becoming slow and laggy. I use an MIUI rom though. I mostly experience this when my RAM is full or close to full. Usually, what I do is either clear my RAM by killing apps from a task manager or rebooting, and then it goes back to silky smooth for me. I'm not sure if this is the same problem that you have though.
Did you try using a task manager to clear tasks?
No. I will not use task manager on phone as Nexus S. Why shall I do this on such a device. Task managers are for slower phones. AND I read very clever article about saving battery life. You can read there that Android manage the tasks on its own much better. Task killers usually don't work as they should or as the user think they do. They will usually slow down the apps which should be loaded in RAM.
ANYWAY... I found the problem. I use NSTools and there is the feature "Deep Idle" - this feature saves battery A LOT!!! (When phone is idle 5+ hours with wi-fi, it takes only 1-2% which is great). But this causes the problem whit loading apps. So I turned it off. Now I have problem with battery life which is a little bit worse.
So now, I need better kernel and also radio (my wi-fi has very poor signal even though it is closed to the router)

OK, does anybody use deep idle, please?
While this is happening could you go into settings > apps > running and tell us what ram is free or cached please.
I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere as to why our 1 GB RAM only shows up at 669 MB on CM10.1 nightlies. I can understand the ROM requiring some space, but 355 MB seems excessive.
So what's the real deal behind this? Other 1 GB phones seem to still show up with 900+ MB in "About Phone" - eg the One X, also using CM10.1.
The reason I am keen to know is because using the default minfree values (I don't really want to have to tweak these), I find apps close WAY too often when something runs in the foreground. I have trimmed down my memory footprint majorly, have only a couple of essential widgets and three home screens. I don't think that in 2013 with a phone that has 1 GB of RAM one should need to minimise things down to one home screen and one widget just to be able to run memory-hungry apps.
So does anyone know why CM10.1 eats all the RAM, how to get it back, or how to stop apps from dying all the time? I can't even get through a 3DMark or Basemark X benchmark without it crashing halfway through due to lack of memory, even with all background apps closed.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

CM10 was fine..I always run the screen filter app as I find even the dimmest of brightness too much. It NEVER would close this app before, since CM10.1 on using any app it does it all the time!
What is so f******* frustrating is that i am very ill in bed & with photosensitivity..so going from a screen dim of 38% to whatever the default auto is (really, any of these stock settings are bad for ur eyes long term!) just makes me scream!!!
I have 386mb or so, so obviously this is not the fault of my phone since u r having the same issue with much more memory than me it's something they have changed in CM10.1 since screen filter is a tiny app.
I frequently close all apps with a task manager & anyone that thinks they r a smart a** telling me 'android has its own memory management..u don't need to do that..it will make ur phone slower blah blah crap is talking up their exit hole lol I have disabled most apps running on various state changes via autostarts & my phone works faster for it! Some games WON'T load unless I close apps or restart - I'd like to see ur excuses for this lol There is a difference with the technical & the reality in this sense believe me!
I am considering going back to CM10 as this issue not to be sorted by now is ridiculous, but perhaps only a few have it as I don't see any replies to ur question.
I also thought about this... Where is the RAM? I tried CM10 and back to stock for 1 Day after flashing... I am more satisfied with my cleaned stock..

I feel you. I got the same problem with CM10.1. CM10.0 left me with a total of roughly 783MB. Apparently I was told it's something to do with the kernel and that the developers have not been able to work out the memory management.

669 here too

You'll never get the full 1gb, because the gpu etc need some shared ram too. But I want to know why cm10.0 has more memory available than cm10.1 on the same device
Well it seems the latest nightlies (unofficial) since yesterday seem to have resolved the memory issue.

Did someone confirm this?
Is there now something like ~800MB usable from within Android?

No the total usable is the same (669 MB) but there is much more of it free due to some memory leaks being fixed.
Thats nice to hear. Waiting to see if some bright mind fixes the low available memory issue on the One S. My other device the Xperia T has the same (Qualcomm snapdragon S4) chip set but much more usable memory in CM10.1(800MB)
Any news on this? I saw that the one s c2 has got 800+mb free on cm10.1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263235
