[Q] TF300G Modem looses connection in sleep - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. Have you experienced such a bug before? 3G modem looses connection in sleep mode.
On my TF300G, a fresh tablet with original ROM, latest WW.9.4.4.40, when I leave the tablet in sleep mode with 3G mobile data ( I have a SIM with internet activated on the tablet), after 10 minutes or so, connection is lost.
Moreover, when I press the sleep button for turning the tablet on to use, I see in Notification Bar: "No connection available". After a few seconds, the connection comes back and then the tablet is flooded with notifications from Mail or Yahoo or Twitter.
I haven't modified anything, it's not unlocked, it has original ROM. This is frustrating, why does it have a modem if it sleeps? On other tablets, 3G modem is always on.
What to do?

Check in wifi settings (if i remember correctly) in there you will find the sleeping policy and change it to remain on even when in sleep mode

The question was about 3G modem, not WiFi. I don't want WiFi on in sleep. What's the point of having a modem then? My data plan is unlimited, so traffic is not a problem.
I haven't encountered this problem on other brands.

Just a wild guess, as I don't own a 3G unit, but there may be a setting (similar to the one governing Wi-Fi while in sleep mode) that is shutting down your data connection when the unit enters standby mode. This would likely have nothing to do with restricting data as Asus would not know, much less care, how limited or unlimited your data plan is, and would likely be in place in the interest of saving battery life.
As I said, just a guess, much like the one you so quickly tossed aside above.

Well, there isn't a setting to shutdown connection in sleep for modem. At least not in User Mode. I am an engineer, guessing is for poets or philosophers.
This isn't the first time I encounter on an Asus tablet. My first Transformer had the same problem. I have sent it to RMA. Maybe I should do the same with this one, too.

So let me get this straight. You are an engineer (meaning you drive trains), and you think that the ideas that have been suggested to your problem are of no use as you feel they stem from 'fluffy' academic disciplines.

This was mean from your side. I haven't insulted you, but you have. Thank you very much. Instead of help, I have received only insults. Thank you again.
You could have refused to help, not knowing the answer, instead you continued to offend and insult me. Nice one.

No, we are XDA here, we supposed to know a bit of technical problems. It was just a bad remark. Guessing does not comply in IT.
I apologize if it sounded like an insult.
Please, anyone, have you encountered such an issue with 3G modem? It's ok if there are no other people with this problem

May I remind you that you posted your issue in a Q&A forum, and both reply's you received you dismissed as useless and having no bearing on your problem. At least 2 people were willing to help. We could have just suggested you re-read your users manual or contact Asus directly, but instead took a stab at troubleshooting your problem with you.

Let me get this straight: First reply was about WiFi on, even if I asked about a 3G problem, a totally different thing. The person that replied hasn't read the title.
The second one: You gave me a standard answer about checking 3G modem sleep mode, a setting that does not exist, or hasn't existed ever in history of Android.
You got mad at me because I "tossed" your answers. I haven't and I appreciate the help you offered.
But I still am with an unsolved problem. I can't contact Asus, but I can send back the tablet to the supplier as RMA, because beside the issue with modem, the LCD screen has a white spot.

Do have fun with that Karma you're building.

I am sorry. I think I have found the answer. Asus has an option for all tablets, it's called: Asus Customized Setting. There is a setting that refers to Network. I have deactivated it before, but without success. I have done a hard reset now and deactivated again, it seems that now the modem stays on.
I apologize, but didn't wanted to offend anyone. Now, if somebody has this issue with modem sleep, deactivate this setting. If it stays on, then factory reset and it will work.
This setting refers to Network generally speaking, it doesn't say if only WiFi or modem.

Im about done with this G2X!

Wifi never stays on and when it turns off on its own the 4G or 2G is also DEAD NO CONNECTION!
Only way to get data back on is to turn off the phone! Anyone else having this issue? If you do what are you going to do, stay with it? Have you found a fix?
I have tried everything and nothing works. Could it be because of the ROOT? Hard reset does nothing accept waste your time.
Exchange it. I have no problem keeping any connection, rooted or unrooted.
Did you skip the initial setup? Skipping it has been found to cause a lot of connection problems. Or are you restoring Titanium backups? Restoring old Wi-Fi settings also seems to mess up Wi-Fi. Try factory resetting (not hard resetting) and not skipping initial setup.

Did everything everyone mentioned here and MORE. What has fixed it SO FAR is 2 things.
1- switched wifi sleep policy to TURN OFF WHEN SCREEN IS OFF. Which I don't like but it works because once the wifi router is of range the 4g data connection kicks in! Before it stayed dead when set to NEVER TURN OFF.
2. App called WIFI KEEP ALIVE in the market. WORKS GREAT!

A simple return would have worked so painlessly.
We're allllll still under the 14 days...
Absolutely no issues with my phone.
Just return the phone if you're having issues with it. Caps locking won't help you solve your problem. Returning the phone and asking for an exchange is easy as counting from 1-100. , it's just an isolated case.
I am also having connectivity issues. I fully understand, Here is my post.
I will give it some time, before I call it quits.
I have noticed when using Reader it will say "No Connection Retry" at the bottom if I scroll really quickly. It also does it a few times when I start up Pocket Legends.

When you say 14 days...thats how long you have to return it? Where did you buy yours? Where I'm at there are no T-Mobile stores. The only place to buy is Radio Shack...and Wal-Mart but I purchased mine at Radio Shack. They told me 30 days..is this true? BTW...I'm having no issues other than keeping 4G where at my house so I just switched in network settings to WCDMA Only when I'm at home and I keep 4G. I don't have Wi-Fi though so I haven't checked it yet...I tether my Evo and now my G2X for my internet for my computer.

I have opposite (minor) problem.
When I turn WiFi off - it keeps on trying to come back on. No issue but waste of battery. It connects almost immediately when it is close to my router.

Having an attitude like this really isn't going to get people to want to help you... you act like it's our job to fix your phone and help you.. using caps is basically yelling at us... so yeah, I dont know too many that would be willing to help after being yelled at like its our fault..
I rebuilt my phone for the third time today because I was getting force closes on the browser. I moved some stuff to SD memory so it wasn't the phone's fault. I noticed that the first time I turned Wi-Fi on that Wi-Fi calling automatically enabled itself. When it's on, all native data connections are disabled. You might want to look at the state of your Wi-Fi Calling app. With Wi-Fi calling running, the settings menu allows you to set it to "Wi-Fi Only." That was the default setting on my G2 so I'd suggest making sure that's what's selected.
There is a fix for this.

You said you've tried everything (meaning everything on your phone). Have you tried resetting your router? Issues like this tend to happen when:
1) There is spotty wi-fi connection
2) The router has run out of IP addresses to lease to devices
3) Wi-fi calling has been enabled and is not disabling automatically when it should (therefore leaving cellular data disabled)
4) There is a genuine hardware problem with your phone
That is what I can deduce (and I assume what most people will come to conclude) from the information you've given. Hope this helps.

Suspend_backoff Wakelock

I am suffering from the suspend_backoff wakelock. Under the partial wakelocks section the highest counts are "WifiStateMachine" and "DHCP". I am S-off and running Viper 3.2.6 with the kernel it comes with. I have done a full wipe (wipe cache, dalvik cache, even flashed Calkulin's_FORMAT_ALL_for_One_XL.zip because I previously changed recoveries), and I have not installed any extra apps except for BetterBatteryStats.
Now, I believe I have read through every forum thread about this issue. No, I do not have Chrome installed. "Wifi Best Performace" is unchecked. I am not signed into any accounts, including Google or Facebook. Location services are disabled. It only occurs when Wifi is turned on. The closest thread I've come across would be:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106529
The thing is, I am using my college campus's internet, so I cannot simply get rid of the "broadcast storm," if it even is the problem. If this were my problem, however, wouldn't many Android phone users on the college campus also be suffering from suspend_backoff? I guess the next step for investigating this problem would be to inspect my friends' Android phones and see if they have the same problem. I can't imagine this being a widespread problem though, as there would be many more complaints about this issue.
Does anyone have any suggestions/thoughts to help me out? I will appreciate any feedback
Also, I have monitored Wifi network activity on my phone using Wireshark, and I got a billion DHCP solicit requests. I do not know if this is pertinent information...

Get a separate router to grab the Internet and stay off campus lan? This way you can have your own lan while using campus Internet.
This is purely speculation of course. I've never had this issue or tried to resolve an issue like this. The real fix would be to ask your net administrator to incorporate the spanning tree protocol.

Thanks for responding. I don't have a router, and I don't want to spend money on one. Here is another thread for another phone that seems to have the same issue:

The OP is getting another wakelock WLAN_RX_WAKE, but his symptons are the exact same. Plus, he is using a university network too. Doesn't seem to be related to phones, as the OP is using a Galaxy Nexus, while the last post in that thread indicates that S3s can have the same problem. Furthermore, the OP states that his phone used to be fine until he flashed CM10, after which the wakelock started appearing. Then even after full wipes, the issue persists!!!!! I have also flashed CM10 in the past. That thread has not been resolved at all. What is going on??
Edit: I found another thread with similar problems:

If the problem isn't with the device, how do you expect to fix it by doing something with your device?
I'm with exad, the issue sounds like it's with the wifi setup at your university. Maybe talk to the admins there??
Ok, I will try talking to the net admins here. Also, just to be sure it's a network problem, I'm trying to install BetterBatteryStats on my friends' phones to see if they are also experiencing the same thing on Wifi. So far, 3 out of the 3 people I have asked had less than 5% battery left when I asked them...I managed to charge one of them up a little bit, but then BetterBatteryStats kept crashing on the phone. I will keep trying.
If you're afraid cm10 caused it. S-off if you're not already and run an ruu. That will return everything to stock. If it continues its the network. If not it was your phone and cm10.

Attached are my dmseg.txt and logcat.txt. I hope I did the logcat.txt correctly. I think the WifiStateMachine stuff in the logcat.txt should be more closely examined. I don't know what it means. Does it reveal anything?
Running an RUU seems like a significant time investment for me. Wouldn't I have to re-root my device, reflash a recovery, unlock bootloader and stuff? Plus, I don't know which RUU to use, so I would have to put time to do research. It even seems a little risky. I am S-off though.
I'm waiting on my friend's responses for their BetterBatteryStats logs. I really want to know what shows up, but they're taking their sweet time...If they are having the same problem, I can conclude for sure it's the network. Right now I think it's the network but have no concrete evidence.

run the ruu. the ruu takes 10 minutes and wipes everything.
the ruu doesn't relock the bootloader so you can just flash recovery after and flash a rom.
here's the list of ruus with links. pick the carrier your phone came from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37227608
You can post whatever logcats and dmesgs you want. this is how you test to narrow down the cause.if i can invest the time to help you figure out the cause of your problem you can invest the time to complete the steps to figure out the cause. if its indeed cm10 there will most likely be no fix other than to not flash it.

I'm sorry if I implied that I would not run the RUU because it would take too much time. I just did not have the time at that moment to do enough research about it. I do not like to do things blind, so I spent an hour or two reading up on other people's situations. I decided that it is safe to go ahead and run the 3.18 RUU. In fact, it is running right now, and I really hope it's not going to brick.
Thanks exad for the help. The RUU worked fine. I can now say with 100% certainty it's the network that's causing the suspend_backoff wakelocks. I am completely stock and am not even signed into my gmail account. I turn off the Wifi, and the phone sleeps normally. With Wifi on, the suspend_backoff wakelock keeps the phone awake ~80% of the time. Now for the next step...getting my university to change its network protocol?? That seems like a daunting task for a single student at a university.

Either that or create your own network that only pulls only internet from the existing network. (Pure speculation, be prepaired to be able to return the router should it not work)
Sorry I couldn't offer a more feasible solution! Good luck friend!
I've been thinking about this problem, and I'm wondering:
Could this problem actually be Android's/the kernel's fault? In other words, could this problem be seen as a bug of Android/the kernel? Should the phone really wake up when it is connected to a certain network with lots of broadcast traffic? Couldn't the phone be programmed to ignore such traffic? From what I can see, this traffic should not even be waking the phone, as it is all DHCPv6 solict requests. What is also interesting to note is that it is DHCPv6 and not DHCP. I do not have any background in networking, but surfing the internet is still dominated by IPv4, correct? IPv6 is mainly for local networks?
I don't know what I'm getting at, but those are my thoughts...

Hi!
I can´t say for sure if OP tried of course, but in my sad experience OP does have a point (intentionally or otherwise).
I did check for answers and found the thread you refer to.
For me, hard reset didn´t do the trick.
Upon reset the tablet found my home Network all right and hooked up. I was thrilled - problem solved.
Now 2 hours later i´m sitting at my desk at work and the -905 can´t find any networks whatsoever. Depite that my Note 3 clearly detects 2 strong wi-fi networks and 2 weak ditto (on & off).
I am somewhat less than extatic. :crying:
Reboot twice, flightmode on/of. Nothing seems to make any difference.
By my count there are now at least 3 users that report this issue. It may be a bit early but i see a pattern in the far Horizon.
Thoughts & inputs are appreciated.

Hi!
Thanks for the interest & taking the time to ansver.
Living in a small arctic town however (approximately 1500 people) in Greenland we don´t have a lot of bestbuys around here.
I have considered reflashing the rom using Odin myself. If it solves the issue it´s a fairly hassle free repair.

3 people out of several hundred thousand isn't a pattern.
However, losing WiFi after an update is a common Android bug. A reflash (particularly the modem) usually solves it.

Hi!
Statistically i quite agree. Completely off topic I was referring to the old proverb: "Once is chance, twice is coincidence, third time is a pattern".
On topic though it gives me great dissatisfaction to report that reflashing the rom did nothing to remedy the issue.
Downloading the entire rom from Sammobile, latest Odin, MD5# checked out. In short, all i´s dotted & all t´s crossed.
The -905 was sublimely indifferent - this is hastily converging towards frustration
Thoughts appreciated - otherwise i´ll probably just try again.

Solved!
Hi
Found it! It´s Passpoint that´s the culprit.
The whys and the hows i haven´t got but i´d downgraded to the old rom - reacquired Wifi - subsequently re-upgraded and Poof like evil magic, wifi was gone.
I muddled about in the wifi settings and was just about to admit defeat, when i shut Passpoint off - simply because i never use it, and the -905 said "Let there be Wifi"
Afterwards i found out that once wifi is detected and connected i can start passpoint up Again. Then if i move out of coverage and back in again the problem starts all over. Not a big issue since i keep passpoint shut down for now but there you have it.

Issues with mobile data - Wont stay on LTE - Switches constantly.

Hello! Thanks for taking time to help me out!
Here is what is happening; I just recently updated my phone to Marshmallow and am running XtraSmooth with EXKernel. I live in China and had to follow the tutorial to change one of my bands to get LTE here. Of course everything was working fine before I updated to M6.
I can go into the 'Testing' Menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and switch to LTE only and LTE works great, however I then can not receive or send calls or text messages. When I do switch to LTE Only the LTE connection is usually much stronger than when not on LTE. For now I leave it on LTE/GSM (auto).
When I wake up my phone it is usually connected to 3g or edge, after a while it connects to H but then jumps back to 3g, and never seems to connect to LTE.
Is there a new feature I am not aware of that is causing this issue that I could turn off?
Thanks Again,
Chris

Thanks Again,
Chris

sounds like you need to downgrade. the mod probably doesn't work with your carrier on the newest update. I don't know for sure but your can ask in the thread where your got the LTE Band mods from.

Thanks for your reply! I really appreciate your help!
This is the thread I got the hack/mod from for the LTE bands. I did re-perform the hack to verify it is still functioning. A few users in that thread reported it working with Marshmallow.
I was just out and about and I did notice LTE being used occasionally, sometime working sometimes not -- Oddly enough H seemed to not work at all giving DNS errors in chrome.
I am about to just restore my phone back to Lollipop with the twrp image I have... But I really do like to stay update to date with the latest OS. I also wanted to try a Chinese ROM like MIUI but they are still stuck on kitkat for the N5 and I don't want to go that far back... If the phone is still performing poorly and no one knows what is going on in a day or two I may revert back just to save myself the headache! I may also try a different ROM like Chroma to see if it helps.
If anyone else has ideas please let me know! Thank you!

Last thought it make sure you wiped everything in TWRP before flashing the ROM and make sure the modem you're using is marshmallow compatible. if you performed the steps on modem that isn't compatible, that could have caused your issues. I hope this is helpful to you. and feel free to hit the like :silly::good:

I don't know a lot about phones... When you say modem when referring to phones do you mean radio? I flashed the stock M6 factory Google Image by running the flash-all.bat. After that I flashed the ROM. Should doing this have taken care of that
Should I attempt to flash some other things? If so can you point me in the right direction.
Also it seems to be working a little better, steadily connected to LTE, however I get many many DNS errors; again I live in China. I am going to try to set custom DNS that I know works well here, when I get home from school. Is there a good app for this?

first, when you see modem and radio, those are the same file. and yes you flashed it correctly using the "flash-all.bat." :good: so you have the latest modem for the nexus 5. The DNS errors could mean many things. DNS depends on carrier, proxys they may be using, phone settings, etc. also for next time before you flash any files, read the stickies and rules. If not people may get mad at you & call you names if you ask question that already have answers inside of the rules and stickies

focus on fixing the LTE problem first completely than deal with the DNS so you don't confuse the problems.

I think the LTE issue has mostly resolved itself. My house must be in a very poorly covered area and so I gets disconnected.
The big thing now is dns issues... Is there a good way to change it or do tests for issues?
Thanks

I'm sorry, this must seem crazy. So when I am connected to WiFi I can surf the internet just fine (as well as we can here) when on 3G or H data connection it works. But when I'm on LTE I cannot browse. Chrome gives a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error (for websites like bing.com and baidu.com [like chinese google]).

hmmm interesting. have you tried google searching the issue? someone else who has your phone and carrier may have had the issue, nexus 5 is pretty common.
also what carrier do you have?

I have a little, and I really cant find anything. It seems I may not be getting an IP at all. I d/l a DNS Switcher app and it has a button to show current network settings and ip displays as 0.0.0.0 dns as 0.0.0.0
I may have to modify my searches.

Honestly if those settings are coming up using the cell network, idk. Be certain your APN settings are correct since that could effect it. Lastly if that didn't happen with out the custom radio than you may be having some issues with the mod. go back to the thread and make sure you did everything like they said. also try using a different browser, I heard something about google and China not being good with each other

I really appreciate you sticking around and helping me out! I am at school or work all day so I only have short evenings to trouble shoot. So here is what I experienced today;
I can now steadily connect to LTE (even in areas I was having trouble with before). Sometimes, when I connect to wifi then disconnect and therefore reconnect to LTE it doesn't handle the switch-over very well and gives issues with the connection (the NXDOMAIN errors or, more rarely, no internet connection at all). I downloaded LTE Discovery which showed me I am connected on band 3 which means the 'hack' successfully applied. I also asked over on their post and they said It will stay across a factory update. To fix the connection errors I can usually restart my phone or play with the APNs (switch back and forth), merely turning data off then back on does not fix the issue.
My next idea is to switch ROMs then downgrade. but oddly enough, right now, no matter what I do it works... This is nuts, haha.

No problem, and try different modems first, that could clear up the issue. than try some different ROMs and going back to stock like you said.. Also you never mentioned what you doing when you get those DNS related errors. don't forget to hit thanks man, def appreciated.
also, be sure no one else in your area, with your service provider is having the same issue.

Signal but no service

Hey all, this my very first post here and I am quite nervous haha. Been a huge fan of the website and I have solved many issues thanks to the vast amount of resources, however I have come across one no one seems to have had.
My Note 5 recently starting having issues with service, where it displays full signal (as in bars, no 4G or E, just cellular bars) but my phone doesn't actually have service. If I try to make a phone call all it gives me is "Not registered on network." and if I try to send out a text message, similar messages saying I am not connected to the connect pop up.
Things I have tried:
Manually trying to connect to a network through the Network operators setting in the general setting. This leads to it displaying my network and a couple other after searching (my network is T-Mobile) but when I try to click on it to connect to it, it says its cannot be connected at the time.
I have tried booting the phone into safe mode, but with nothing different.
I have tried putting my sim card into another phone, and it works perfectly fine in the other phone.
Besides that, I am stuck. I have given it a couple days to do nothing, but as I tried putting my sim card and testing it again today, nothing is different.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all!!

I had it once, I simply had to register on the network. Go to settings/mobile networks/network operators/search networks
You can choose from the list _ mine was AT&T

I did try that. However, when my network comes up after searching for it, I cannot register to it, and it says "Unable to select network. Select Automatically"
Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be able to connect to any of them. I have T-Mobile, but when I click on the AT&T network, the same thing happens.
After searching for a while, the phone just gives up.

Yup, Data is turned on. But its not just data that isn't working, phone calls and text can't get sent out. I'll try to take some screenshot tonight and post them, is there anything I should focus on in terms of screenshotting?
Here are some screenshots of various places where I have checked the network connection. I just did a factory reset on it yesterday to check if that would fix anything but it really didn't do anything as far as I can tell.
Here are the remaining:
I have the same issue. Tmobile note5.
My tmobile note5 is doing the same thing. The phone is not even a month old. It worked fine for first 3 weeks then just out of nowhere stopped getting cell service. I can use wifi of only. Tmobile will not in store swap it because they didn't have a case in Stock of any brand when I purchased it and I dropped it walking out of the store cracking the backplate ever so slightly. Yes they denied replacing it then also even when it was less then 20 minutes old and didn't even get 3 feet past there door. It would not be cracked if they kept cases for there most advertised phone I stock. It did work still just fine example after taking minor cosmetic damage. Now this lack of cell service deal is happening and I have no choice but to do an insurance claim on it for $175 when I haven't even made the first payment on the brand new phone. Please tell me you have found a solution to the service problem.
Mine suffered something very similar, I've had the phone maybe around 6 months. I had a case on mine for a while but when I took it off, I notice that the glass backing was slightly cracked. Hardly noticeable honestly and it worked fine for 3-4 months. One day it just randomly stopped working, I've yet to find a fix, I might take it in to a phone repair store just to get a diagnostic as I'm thinking it's more of a hardware problem than software.
I'm in another state right now but then I get back home I'm going to try and go back before the update and see if that changes anything
I will post my results in about 5 days when I'm home.
Great thanks, that's a good idea, I'll do that as well this weekend after my midterms. I'll keep you all posted.
FIXED IT!
So I was bored and started to fiddle with my sm-n920t to fix the no cellular service problem after the 6.0.1 update and stumbled across the issue. So after days and endless hours of trying to solve this issue, I decided to check one last thing before flashing it to a previous version and here is my fix. So you need to go to settings, then ( more connection settings), then ( Wi-Fi Calling), then make sure you have the option set to (Cellular Network Preferred) . In my case the new 6.0.1 update set it to (Never use Cellular Network). This made it unable to connect to a tower therfore no calls, text, or Internet outside of Wi-Fi.

I hope this is what your issue is. Please let me know if it fixes it for ya. Good luck man! I also have some pictures that can guide you through the steps I took screen by screen with red drawing I put on it to mark buttons needed to be hit but I can't get them to upload for some reason. If you end up needing them just message me I will send them to you.

Congratulations sir haha, that must be a wonderful feeling to get your Note 5 up and running again.
It is unfortunately not the fix for me though. My phone straight up tells me "No Service" when I scroll down the notification bar.
I truly fear that it is a hardware issue, rather than a software issue.
Thanks for the post though, I am sure it will help someone else.
Dang I was really hoping it was your fix also. I still wanna help ya though. I have 4 more days until I drive home to Colorado and nothing to do in the mean time. Try to take a few screen shots of your problem so I get an idea and have something to work on for a few days lol.

Heyyyy you live in Colorado too? I live in Denver/Fort Collins myself haha.
Thanks for the help, I have already posted a couple screenshot but here is the one from the dialer.
No kidding? I'm in longmont and my cousin's live in loveland/ ft Collins. I will message you my number on here shoot me a text when ya get a chance so I got your number and I will hit you up when I get home I got many solutions I did on my phone before finding the fix. And if you ever need computer parts I have a garage full of everything from graphics cards to cpu's to full built towers for game and workstation towers for graphic design and stuff.
Well all, found the issue. Turns out the (insert foul language here) person who sold me the phone either reported it stolen or stop making payments on the phone, thus blacklisting my IMEI.
Learned my lesson, never to buy smartphones again on Craigslist...

This happened to me years ago, pretty infuriating. Things have changed now tho, always check the imei, tmobile has a checker on its website now that will tell you if the phone has a balance on it or not.
