Hi all, wondering if anyone can help. My prime started off with a VERY minor and occasional screen flicker. It steadily got worse and worse till it was horrible. Factory reset didn't even work. Now, infinity is starting a tad bit
Only thing I can think of, is maybe an app. When I got infinity, I immediately rooted, and installed all primes apps on it with Titanium Backup.
Anyone else having problems, or know what I can try? Really don't want it getting HORRIBLE like prime was.
Thanks in advance.
Do you mean smart dimmer or constant flickering?

Actual screen flicker. Prime got so bad towards the end, it was like if app screens were stacked like pictures, and the top would flicker out and show portions of one underneath. Factory reset didn't even fix. if it's an app, it's causing damage, I think. if I can find out which one, I'll exchange 700 for a new one (BB protection plan) and not reinstall it.

Exchanging it sounds like a good idea then - they should be reponsible for the crap they're producing without much of a quality control.
Sounds like a lemon to me. I have had no such trouble with mine.
I didn't have that problem with my first Infinity. Does it happen randomly or is there a pattern like when you open an app? If it's an app problem, look to see what apps you had open at the that may have caused the problem. Like the others have said, it sounds like you got a defective tablet. You should exchange it since you have the protection plan.

Anyone notice some issues with the display showing some ghosting/persistence of the previous image when switching to a display/app with a very gray color such as the Amazon Appstore app? Easiest way I can see is when I load up something like the Android market, let it sit for 5 or so seconds, then load up the Amazon Appstore (it helps to have them previously loaded so you can just switch between the two), you can see some lines and images left over from the Android Market in the grey areas in the Amazon Appstore. For me it's easiest to see under the 'My Apps' part as there is a lot of gray.
This seems to happen at all brightness levels but mostly when the unit is just first turned on. After using the unit for a few minutes the ghosting/persistence of previous images doesn't happen as easily. Once you notice this thing, it's hard to not notice it. I can even notice it in the small gray bars in the Pulse application, for instance. Seems rather annoying. I've had a couple of Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus's before this one and did not notice this issue, but it doesn't mean it wasn't there and I just missed it. Oddly this display seems better than my previous units in the fact that the color is more uniform, as the other ones had more yellowing towards the right side of the display (when in portrait mode) than this one. However, this ghosting/persistence issue is really bugging me.
I have a couple of Kindle Fire's and a Dell Streak 7 and a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet, and have had numerous other tablets, but have never noticed this before.
I've attached photos. You can see one is just of the Android Market. The 2nd is of me loading up the Amazon Appstore right after and you can see the ghost image of the Android Market in the gray areas.
Obviously this would not show up in a screenshot as it's a screen artifact, so I took pictures with my phone camera.
How long does it take an image to ghost the screen? How long does it take the ghosting to disappear?
For example, I was going to the Android Market app for only a few seconds. 5 or so seconds. When I then went to the Amazon Appstore app, it takes many many minutes for the ghosting to disappear.
It seems after using the device for 20 or so minutes straight, the ghosting doesn't happen. But if I put the tab down for 30 minutes and test again, it all happens again the same way.
It's pretty horrible looking. Not sure if it's just a bad one I got or if this is normal. Pretty sure this one is going back though. Sigh, I really like this tab.
i haven't really experienced this with my P6200 with DXKL3 firmware and even with my past firmwares
This is a P6210 R62 serial. UEKL1 firmware.
I just downgraded to UEKK3 (couldn't find anything older) and the problem is still there. Did a factory reset too of course.
Can anyone else test this and let me know what they see? I'm on the brink of my return policy and need to figure out if this is a defect or just a normal thing with these PLS screens. It seems to only be an issue with the color gray.
Neither of my P6210's displays exhibit any ghosting.

Definitely do not have this problem with mine:
GT-P6210
S/N - R62BA3219Z
ROM - KL1
This seems to be possibly a problem with displays lately. People are calling it 'burn-in' but it's not the same as the old traditional CRT 'burn-in'. To me I could only really see it on a gray screen. If I went to the browser and opened a white screen, it wasn't there. But certain shades of gray made it very obvious.
If you search around it appears people are having issues with it most recently with the transformer prime. This appears to be another case (not as dramatic of a 'burn-in' as mine) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432388 and this guy mentions it too - http://androidforums.com/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime/481834-screen-burn.html
Either way, I did return the galaxy tab 7.0 plus. The problem was driving me nuts. I have a Kindle Fire that didn't have the problem, and I couldn't justify keeping a $400 device with tihs problem when the $200 one I was holding didn't have any problem like that.
I couldn't reproduce it on the galaxy tab in BB either, but the gray's on that screen appeared to be much darker overall. My guess is they're just using different screen batches or something. That's the problem with this stuff now a days, parts are sourced from all over made by different manufacturuers in different plants with different parts and so on. Too much variation.
So this is at least your third 7 Plus unit? What was the matter with each of the previous ones you purchased?
Also, where did you buy them from? And what part of the country? Might be your supplier who has defective bunches and I just want to be sure to avoid them.
I tried this multiple times and it never happened on mine. A P6210 with the latest firmware.
I got my A510 two days ago and after my initial delight with the device dissipated I got into testing it a bit. In 12 hours of testing (playing back medium res video on loop) I had two complete freezes requiring a hard reset. I was using Mobo player. This is just not acceptable for me so I'm sending it back today. Looking for a replacement tablet there's nothing that really fits the bill. The TF300 is very similar and I would go for that were it not for the silly speaker placement that gives imbalanced, mono sound when playing back video/audio.
Essentially, I want the A510 but without the freezing problems so my question is whether I just got unlucky with a bad device or if this is a problem common to this tablet (or indeed the Tegra chip in general). The device does heat up quite a bit but that in and of itself is not a major issue to me if it's not the root cause of the crashing. If it's a known problem is there any chance Acer will fix it in later batches of the tablet?
The A700 is a little outside my budget but I would pay the extra €70 if I could be sure it didn't have similar issues so if anyone has rigorously tested both models and can give any feedback as to the reliability of each I'd love to hear it.

Well, I bought an Iconia A510 and experienced the touch screen issues during the very first minutes of usage. I sent it back to Acer for assistance twice in a month. After a touch screen and a motherboard replacement still the problem hasn't been solved.
While I was waiting for the A510 to be fixed, I ordered a brand new A700 from Amazon.
I would have sold the A510 if the A700 had satisfied me.
The touch screen issues were almost absent, though it happened a few times to the screen to become unresponsive. The heat on the lower-right corner was there and present. I experienced a couple of reboots too (expecially during high demanding 3D games).
Due to the higher resolution, a few games didn't run as smooth as on the A510.
Watching the movies was a very pleasant experience. The screen was really great as well as the stereo output coming out from two separate and well positioned speakers.
While I was impressed with the Iconia A700, I resolved to return it back to Amazon because I realised that the only benefit I would have had from the new model was the screen resolution.
The A700 inherited all other major issues affecting the A510 (touch screen, heat and reboots).
It could be that I received a defective device. Still I haven't read very positive feedback on the A700.
Thanks. Looks like yet another missed opportunity then. As a matter of interest if your A501 is still misbehaving when you get it back, what do you plan to do?

Well, the tablet is in my hands already and like I said in my previous post it is still misbehaving. I am eagerly waiting for the next OTA to be released. There are reports that the touch screen issues have been resolved in which case I am going to keep it.
I will give it to my little boy otherwise.
Since he repeatedly bangs on the screen as long as it shows anything that he likes, I am pretty much sure he won't notice any lag on the touch screen responsiveness!
my a510 freezes too. totally randomly...black and white screen, or gray.
and then the only way is to force rebbot manually with poweroff.
i got my one replaced too, but still find this frezees...or simple app crashes...or lags
i opened a similar thread...but no answers. my firmware is italian 1044.00 wwgen1
@slrvboooh
what's your firmware build?
Hi, has anyone noticed the screen flicker a little when watching videos? I don't notice it on every video but I have a video that is a little bright and the video takes place in the snow and ice. I can see the screen flicker slightly during the whole video. At first I thought it might be my micro sd card so I tried youtube and some videos do it there also. Only seems noticeable on bright videos.
Also, all of the videos I watch stutter a little. Doesn't matter if its videos I have stored on micro sd or youtube. Anyone else have this?
Really want to keep the tab because around me they are hard to come by so returning it will suck. But everytime I think I might just keep it I find something else wrong:crying:
So far dust between gorrila glass and digitizer, screen creeking in left corner, burning smell from speaker and screen flicker and stuttering videos.
Anyway, hope no one else is dealing with this
Also if no one minds could you go to this link on your tab and see if this video has screen flicker for you guys too? I watched on my pc and I see no flickering.

? What do you mean? You mean the dimmer? If so I was thinking that as well. Guess I do need to return it?
Thanks for getting back to me
Goggle "didimm" it is a feature from nvidia. Many notice it, some don't.
I for myself rarely see it. And if it doesn't matter for me.
Maybe compare it to a device in store to see if yours is defective?
Hmm, that article says that your eyes would never be able to see the difference - well, guess what - almost everyone can see it! I assumed it was a "dynamic contrast" - just like some TV's do, but whatever it is, it *is* noticeable and it *is* very annoying at times. At least give us the option to disable it when needed (like when watching videos etc). The problem is that it seems to do it in stages, and like I said, there are *many* folks that find it very annoying.

Dynamic contrast is even worse with anime. You don't know the feels I know.
perhaps this can help:

(requires root)
EDIT: It works!
just use the terminal emulator app (or adb shell) and do
Code:
su
echo "0" > /sys/devices/tegradc.0/smartdimmer/enable
Bam! no autodim until the next reboot

Great find! I too can confirm it works! Haven't noticed any degradation in screen quality/contrast either (although I guess it will effect battery life). Regardless, at least know we know we have the option to disable/enable as needed!
Thanks alot!
EDIT: What's strange (in my mind), is that if this feature is only for battery-saving, why wouldn't it be disabled while on AC power? That would be great if it would automatically disable this "feature" while on AC power, since the only goal is conserve power...

Ok so I am not going crazy and my old eyes aren't playing tricks on me. Well not really old (32).
So it seems that even if I return it for a new one that this problem will be on that one as well?
So I wonder if some have it worse than others? Maybe I will still get a new one. I just fear that I will get a new one and it will have even more problems than the one I have now
EDIT: After going to link provided it seems things happen "after" watching a video. Where as my problem is during videos. And not all videos it seems. The link I posted to youtube does it bad on my device. Plus am unsure about rooting because I may need to return it to bestbuy and i dont want the geeksquad trolling thru the device looking to see if i did anything to it like rooting

I would *not* return it for this! It happens on all TF700's (the original link is for the Nexus 7, which behaves differently, I believe).
Again, it's not a flaw - it's by design. This setting will allow you to disable/enable it though (I would hope that Asus also adds a toggle for this in future firmwares).
But returning it for another is not going to help and you may end up with a unit that has a real problem...
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
The flickering: I would not return it for that. I'm sure all the tf700s flicker just the same.
The stinky speaker: I would wait for it to fail first, then RMA it.
The dust trapped under the screen: Exchange it even if its just one spec. I exchanged my tf300 for the same reason, and my tf700 screen is flawless. The screen is the most expensive and prominant part, it should be flawless.
A couple months seems long. my exchange took around four days. I would reccomend taking it in for exchange and seeing what their estimate for the date would be. If its too long, you can always back out of exchanging it. You could also give RMAing it a shot, that will take weeks (which is better than months)
Rest assured the fix I linked to does work. I even used Script mananger, and the scripts provided on that page to make a desktop widget to turn it on and off. Dont worry about rooting. Flashing the firmware from asus's website will unroot it without a trace, then do a factory reset and you're good to go.:good:

Hey jtrosky. I agree exchanging just for that reason may be silly, but I have other issues as well ( like video stutter, dirt under screen , creeking screen which I see others talking about so probably happens to them all, and burning smell from speaker. I do thank you for your respnse though. Oh and the screen problem I am talking about in this thread I did not notice on my Transformer Tf300 which I returned for the Tf700
For the Tapatalk users out there (with Tapatalk, the Sticky posts don't show unless you specifically look for them) - we've come up with a solution to the "Dynamic Contrast"/"SmartDimmer" problem.

Well returned my tab today. Getting my new one on thursday. Hopefully all will be ok. We will see.
Also gonna root the new one when I get it and do the mentioned tweak from those in this thread. Thanks guys for checking into this for me:laugh:
Ok! WTF! I just got my new Tab and so far , It had white and red crust on the back of it. The power button is really raised up. And Mother [email protected]#$ it also has the burning speaker smell . I mean I have to put my nose to it but come on. Gonna check it out some more and see how it goes. I really hope this one is a keeper but not looking that way.
Also thanks again for those that posted a link about the dimmer issue
Hmm. All electronics smell like they're burning when they're new. Sure it's not just that new tablet smell? Anyway hope this one works out for you.

Thanks rightonred! Yeah I know. I'm gonna give it some time. Was really just mad about the crusty stuff on the back of it. Thought I would come to my home away from (XDA) and share my sadness. But yeah, I'm gonna give it awhile. So far the only other thing I have noticed besides the crust, wonky power button, is a little light bleed and haptic feedback is really really soft.
I returned a TF700 and replace a order again on Amazon
I just got my TF700 and the first things I do is press the screen down to see if there is a clicking sound or loosen screen problem.
Thank god it doesn't have such problems
Then I turn it on and check for light bleeding. Well, there is a light bleeding spot on the left corner, but not obvious and won't be notice under normal use.
The rest of the TF700 are fine.
Now I am waiting for the case and screen flim.
I am not going to use it until the case arrive, last time I drop it from around 5~8cm height and the corner just blend and the screen pop out. I cannot believe how weak the structure is (Absolutely much weaker than the ipad!)
Hope the case could give some protection.
Waiting for JB now

Yes, +1 on the case. It's really important to have some protective covering for this device. It's so beautiful and it would be such a shame to scratch and mar it up.
Without issues, Asus's tablets are the best:good:
Sound funny but it's true.
Do you have Bluetooth earphones to test it out with? I am happy with my tablet except for the Bluetooth audio lag.
What about lags and performance ?
Mine is perfect built with no hard ware issues, but I feel there are some software issues. I want to know is it common issues or only mine.
Some lags in main screen when first time going through them it looks like it needs time to load the pages and when downloading/updating apps from the market there are some freezes in screen and sometime while browsing using chrome the device become unresponsive and the screen freeze and I have to shut it down...
The device is great, but I'm wondering about the software issues and smoothness of this CPU

same here but i think it's more noticeable because i have a nexus which is very smooth. hoping jb solves all the lagginess.
I just received my TF700T 64GB from Amazon yesterday and no issues with the screen clicking, actually it is very solid. It does have some light bleed out on the start up screen. But any other time it is not noticeable at all. As for the BT issue, that I am not sure of since I don't have a BT headset.
I did have a Freeze and Crash with loading Glowball. Once I turned it off and back on, it didn't seem to have any issues. The lags, in loading pages I have noticed this every once in awhile, which is strange. Wasn't sure if it was my Wifi network. However I have not had any lagging to the point that it locked up the page where I would need to shut down and reboot.
As for a case, that is not for me. You purchase a device like this due to performance and how thin it is. By putting a case over it, then it is thicker like some of the competition. Besides when dust particles get behind the case it will scratch the aluminum anyway if not careful. Not quite sure how one drops such a heavy device. If you have Accidental Damage insurance on it, no need to worry. File a claim and get a new one, issue fixed.
Traded my prime in at my local BestBuy for an Infinity. Clicking around the screen and the buttons were mushy. Second Infinity the buttons were still mushy and there was a poor mesh between the aluminum back and the plastic strip. THIRD Infinity SEEMS ok (cross your fingers) buttons click good, not really mushy, no clicking around the screen, all seems well!
The clicking could be because the glue they use stays tacky for a bit. I would assume that after a month or so it should cure and stop being tacky thus the clicking. Just an idea tho...
It's actually a shame that there are threads devoted to receiving a flawless prime. Not knocking the OP or anything, but it's crazy how we shell out 1/2 a G for a tablet and "hope" that it's a good one... I got fed up with the stutters, lock ups, questionable-hardware-so-lets-blame-it-on-the-software concerns... I had a tf201 and was lucky enough to be able to return it directly to Asus and get a full refund, then I turned around and got the tf700... Went through two of them. First one had mushy buttons and a clicky screen... It was a c7... Then got a replacement which was a c6. Turned out to be a better build than the c7, but the GPS didn't work independently like it should have. Then, I checked the c7 and that didn't work the way it should have either. Both needed google location services active for GPS to work! Between that and reading about the tf300 issues with JB and experiencing the sluggish response times, non responsive touch screen, icon-less home screens, app force closes, decreasing wifi reception and just about every problem under the sun (ala prime), I finally decided to return it to amazon for a refund. It seems like the infinity starts to get really slow as you use it more and more... It has potential, but I don't have the time or bank roll to wait and gamble...
I'm sure there are people who have perfectly working infinity's but I wasn't trying to hold my breath any longer just to hope that JB would correct all the issues... I'm actually eyeing the iPad, but will probably wait until October to see what apple has up its sleeve... I don't care for apple, but truthfully speaking... Their products have a LOT less issues and the developer devotion to some solid apps only available on the iPad have me steered in that direction. I mean, I can't get scrabble for the infinity or the prime (when i had it)... Really?!?!
Well, good luck to the infinity owners, I'll still follow the forums just to see how things turn out, but I think I'm done with Asus... It's really a shame, because they have so much potential...
So I jsut updated my google camera app yesterday and was eager to try any new features and test the camera, when all of a sudden I noticed that there is a dark blemish right in the middle of the screen. I am 100% sure it wasnt there when i bought it, as I did tested it extensively. At first I thought that it was actually a screen defect or that there is a smudge on the lenses.
It appears on every photo, HDR or not. It is best visible on light background. You can check the attached test photo i did.
I am not a huge photography fan, but it does bother me alot knowing that my brand new 2 months old nexus defected. Its rooted ofcourse, so there is no guarantee.
I read somewhere that this is caused by a dust particle inside the camera lenses.
So I just wanted to know whether someone else is suffering from that exact same issue. And if there is an easy way to cope with that problem, e.g. disassembling the lense or forcing air into it :silly:
So, yes, any opinions would be welcome.
Thanks guys
p.s. Also, if anyone else had experienced it, Im curious what case (if any) had they been using? lol I actually noticed the problem after removing and inserting my N5 back into my spigen neo hybrid a couple of times, which is actually quite a challenge. So Im wondering whether that hasnt something to do with it
I wouldn't advise you to open the device up yourself.. You will surely loose warranty if you mess up.
If you think it's a hardware issue then Flash the factory images from Google to return to stock
, reset the tamper flag, lock the bootloader and send it in..

Yep, I can confirm the same experience as you! Only appeared yesterday! I have the Rev11 Hardware.
A bit of googling did reveal others with the same issue...
I have tried a can of compressed air, tapping phone...No joy, it's still there...
I have also tried different camera apps to confirm. Interestingly it was post updating the google camera app too. (but i do not believe this too be the root cause, I've had many specs of dust in my DSLRs before and to appears to me to be dust on the rear of the lens or on the sensor!) I would expect these to be sealed on our phones!
RMA, warranty...are looming...any other ideas peeps?
Cheers

I have tried a can of compressed air, tapping phone...No joy, it's still there...
I have also tried different camera apps to confirm. Interestingly it was post updating the google camera app too. (but i do not believe this too be the root cause, I've had many specs of dust in my DSLRs before and to appears to me to be dust on the rear of the lens or on the sensor!) I would expect these to be sealed on our phones!
RMA, warranty...are looming...any other ideas peeps?
Cheers

I tried the tapping trick too - did not work for me either
I'm still contemplating over the idea of reverting to stock, locking the bootloader and sending in my faulty unit. It would probably take a couple of weeks and I don't want to part ways with my N5 for so long. But living with that nasty blemish on my camera is equally frustrating
I'm going to try this.

I had this issue a few months back; the image you posted looks identical to the issue I had.
Google covered it under warranty and sent me a new device. They asked me to do a full factory reset to confirm it wasn't software related. The process was pretty smooth: if they do send you a new device, you just send your N5 back once it comes so you're not stuck without a phone for a while or anything. They do put a hold on your credit card for the price of the phone until they get your phone, though.
I had it rooted and everything prior to sending it in, but I unrooted/reset the tamper flag before sending it in (and did a factory reset obviously).
I have the same problem but with Nexus 5x. Not 100% sure was the dark spot in the middle at the beginning or not. Now the device is about a week old.
