TF201 Rom Ports Not Possible? - Asus Transformer TF700

I'm no Dev, so I don't necessarily understand how it all works...but is it not possible to take some of the great JB roms from the TF201 and port them over to the TF700? Why has that not been done? It's gotta be somewhat similiar since the hardware is so close.
I'm guessing theres a reason it hasn't been done yet, but I was just curious. Seems so simple, but that's how naive I guess I can be.

Well, I can't blame you believing so, since the TF201/300/700 are very close in hardware -- relatively speaking -- but, alas, not close enough to make it easy to cROM this baby. Just drop by in the CM10 development threads, you'll see that we still an issue or two to solve. We'll get there, but it'll take a bit more time.

[Q] Should I install a ROM on my Transformer?

Hey. I'm pretty new here, but I've been lurking for some time now. I picked up a Transformer at BB a week ago as a replacement to my iPad 2, and I'm very impressed. I have seen many ROMs available for this device, especially Revolver. I was wondering if it is worth rooting my TF and installing Revolver. Is it really that much of a difference? The only lag I experience is when I head to the stock browser, but on Dolphin for Pad I'm fine. I know there are probably hundreds of topics like this, but I haven't found any. I just wondered whether the advantages of Revolver are worth the root. Thanks!

Congrats i just baught one for myself late july as a B-Day present im loving it as well.
in regards to your question, it just depends. Keep in mind that Google has yet to relase the source code for Honeycomb so most roms are based on Gingerbread. Not that its a bad thing, but if your like me, i really do like the stock honeycomb interface.
Ofcoarse you could always just change roms and see how you like it, i myself am just going to wait for ICS in december/early2012
I've bought my Transformer a few days ago, and the first thing I've done is to root and flash a ROM on it.
My personal preference was to flash the latest PRIME build (which is HC3.2, the same as Revolver), as it seems like the dev seems to keep it up-to-date (even daily updates sometimes), and replies to most (if not all) issues people have... He also seems to work very hard by himself to get everything working and happy for everyone. I also have it over-clocked to 1.5GHz, and I've seen nothing but faster speeds on my Transformer and haven't noticed a big drop in battery life (I still have my Transformeron, after 30 hours of use).
The only downside is that you won't be able to receive any OTAs (Over The Air) updates straight from ASUS, but for something like PRIME, we get updates almost straight away as well through the dev that's developing it.
Before you think of rooting/romming, I suggest having a look at where you put the charger in your Transformer. There should be a black sticker that has the serial number. If it starts with B60, you're good to go. If it's B70 or above, you might want to research a bit more before trying to flash/rom (as there were some problems with the newer batch of Transformers with flashing).
But like anything, you can always keep a Titanium Backup of your apps/data and try different ROMs. (I'm thinking of trying out Revolver in a few days).
If you don't like it, you can always go back to stock anyway. Nothing big. It took me 10 minutes to flash from stock with NVFlash, so it's not really a hard process either.
if you don't know whether you should root or not, then you don't really need to root. you don't buying a hammer, then go looking for things to hammer. same with rooting.
that being said, the most generic reasons to root is 1) so you can do system backups, 2) overclocking, 3) use it as a hammer.
there are many specific reasons to root, but just as i can't list all the purposes of a hammer, i can't list all the reasons you would want to root.
it's hammer time.

He/she was talking about romming, not rooting. But sure, same sort of thing applies. It's really individual preferences.
Really, if you're absolutely happy with STOCK, then I suggest leaving it like that. It's sort of how there's a stock model of a car, and a tuned/modified model of the same car. One will get you from A to B faster (and maybe in more style some may argue), but both will get you to your destination in the end.
Thanks. I am eligible for the root, but I think I'll stay stock because I am not presently having any problems. All I can say is I am loving my Transformer!

Still worth buying? Second thoughts

Hey guys,
I really wanted the tf700 since Asus first showed it to the crowd.
But now, I am starting to have second thoughts, since I am reading from a lot of different sources that there are a lot of I/O issues and that maybe Asus just chose the wrong components to make use of the Tegra 3 power.
What do you think?
Should I buy the Asus Infinity or should I go for the Samsung Note 10.1?
Which has no Tegra 3, but has no I/O issues either.
Thanks a lot guys.
Doesn't matter how long or short your answer might be, please just leave something as a reply
EDIT: I even made a little poll, so it has become even easier for the people of few words to get the message across
You really need to try both devices and decide for yourself - otherwise, you'll always be wondering if you were better off with the other device!
In my opinion, the two devices are geared toward different type of users. If you really have a use for the Spen, the Note may be the better choice for you. If you would rather have a keyboard dock (with an extra battery and ports), then the TF700 may be the better choice.
In my case, the TF700 was a no-brainer - I have no use for the Spen whatsoever but I have the need for the keyboard dock (for taking notes at work, etc). I have no desire to try and take handwritten notes on a tablet. I'd much rather type my notes and have them easily searchable, etc.
Again, this is a decision that *you* have to make based on your needs. You will not be happy until you try both devices though...

I am just worried about the I/O and browsing speed, which is not the fastest. However, that might also be due to the internet connection I have tested it on
How did you experience your first browsing experience on your tf700
Personally, I installed Boat browser, which is *much* faster than the stock browser or the Chrome browser. It makes the browsing experience very fast and stable...

I guess I've been lucky with the 700 I have.
I'm not a power user however.
I have found some very good tips here on XDA that have really made the ICS experience bearable COL
I would recommend this tablet over a few others I've owned.
My purchase was kind of based on the future of the Android OS and the best available hardware for a tablet.
Frankly if I had been reading about the tablet in this forum section I may have been very hesitant about the purchase.
In any case if you buy...make sure a return will be easy for you.
Ive had mine for over a week and I am very pleased with it. Weird issues sometimes where it wont turn on after turning screen off, but thats it. It browses fast on chrome and the screen is insane. I haven't looked back.

Thank you for the advise!
I guess I may root the tf700 the moment I decide to buy one!
And then put Zeus' ROM on it.
(BTW: weren't you coming from the Xoom as well? I think I've seen you around on those forums also! )
Remember - in order to install custom ROMs (such as Zeus), you need to unlock the bootloader, which voids your warranty (Asus keeps track of the serial number when you unlock the bootloader).
So, before unlocking, make sure that a) your device doesn't have any major flaws and b) I'd highly recommend some sort of third party warranty, such as Square Trade, so that if your tablet has some sort of hardware issue at a later point, you can get it replaced/repaired as Asus won't touch it.
It really is worth it to install Zeus ROM - it makes the TF700 experience *much* better - just make sure you cover yourself, as Asus completely writes you off once you unlock....

I still have my Xoom, rocking teameos Jellybean nightlies. The Xoom is a great, underrated device, It took the Infinity, with its fantastic screen, dock and expandabilty to muscle my beloved Xoom out of the way as my go-to tab.

Okay
Guess that only makes sense, since there's no official code to be found yet for the tf700.
We'll have to be patient then!
I think your reactions have convinced me to go and buy a TF700, although I am still waiting for some more votes, to check if everybody agrees
(BTW: what is Browser2RAM ?)
Browser2RAM is a tweak to cache web data to RAM instead of the storage inside the device (which is supposedly the cause of some of the TF700 performance issues).
Here is some detailed info on Browser2RAM:

Thanks! Didn't know there was a similar tweak available. That's cool!
I see about 80% of the people say I should stick with the TF700, and seeing how this is a TF700 forum, I think the actual number of 'experts' saying I should go for the TF700 is more like 60%
So I guess I should go and find out myself which I like better.
But that...
- 1080p display
- bright IPS+ technology
- updated Tegra 3
- keyboard dock with extended battery
... make me want a TF700
However, the 2 GB of RAM and S-Pen make me want to go for that Samsung
I guess when weighing out the pros and cons I *should* go for the Asus.

I know it's not a true image of what all XDA experts think, but that's not what I wanted either!
I wanted to know: do you - the TF700 owners- think I should stick with my initial choice or not.
Just to see: is there a high possibility that I will dislike the purchase after a couple of weeks or not.
Apparently 85% of TF700 owners would still pick the TF700, so in my opinion that's good enough to convince me to stick with the TF700.
However, you are right that, if I wanted more objective opinions, I should have also posted on the Note forums
Thanks again, though, for your contribution to this thread. (If only even more people did the same ^^)
hey, I wrote a little comparison of both devices, perhaps that can help.

[Q] Detailed explanation of Developer options?

I've been seeing this on my BIONIC as well, since I started using the ICS leaks.
I have a good idea what some of them are, but some make me wonder. For example, it seems to be a good idea to force GPU rendering for 2D applications, instead of letting the CPU do the work (even if we have a quad+1 core). Obviously empirical evidence suggests otherwise, that we should, in fat, not be using this , particularly if we are on JB.
So, is there a thread anywhere that discusses in detail these options, or a conglomeration of threads, and if not, would someone be willing to compile the info and present it here so we can stop guessing what some of these do / why they may be useful?
Just to add - The self explanatory ones I don't need help with, only some of the more obscure ones....
Do you want to post the list so peeps can add comments?
Folk are lazy you know
Not a bad idea. I'll do that later this evening.

[Q] Before I root--Will anything change with my dock?

Hey all,
Just got the Infinity Pad, and I love it!
Well, almost... I'm still going to root and flash the thing...
Anyway, I just want to ask what people's experience with the dock is. I know it has its own firmware, and I also know that there are changes in how things work once I plug it in. I don't want to lose this functionality , so I wanted to check first.
Are there any issues that pop up at all when flashing the tablet, or do all of the features work? I still want the second battery meter and the multi-touch capabilities on the trackpad, for example. Also, while I'm here, one more thing: Are there custom ROMs for the dock out there?

CleanRom will work with the dock as the stock. I am not sure of the other ROMs out there but I know 100% that Cromi does work with the dock. Whatever issues that pop up in Cromi can be reported to sbdags and he will do what he can. And I am not sure about the firmware for the dock. The firmware updates for the dock come with the ota Asus updates I believe.

I second that completely. In my case, I had the dock when I was at stock JB ROM and now after switching to the CROMI v3.4.4 the keydock experience simply is the same. All the keys are working, including the special keys like settings, screen brightness, volume, browser etc. Also the touch pad comes in handy, including the swiping and pinch to zoom.
What's not clear to me is the firmware thing. As far as I know the dock firmware is part of the stock ROM, like being a particular folder somewhere in the systems area. As such, I suspect it should be part of CROMI as well. What I don't know is what triggers an update process in the case there is new firmware.
All the same, I also don't know how all the other ROMs out there are working. With CROMI it does.
EDIT: Forgot to mention: (with CROMI) you will have the second battery meter, including the Asus widget.

Tylorw and FordPrefect have answered the questions regarding the functionality already, and I have nothing to add to their descrption: it simply works on CROMI. On other ROMs there are (sometimes many) issues -- in their beginnings, the shortcuts were not working at all, and with some of them we have seen this problem creep up every time a major update was issued. Also, certain ASUS-specific functionality, like the IPS/IPS+ toggle is not (and possibly will never be) available with non-stock-based ROMs.
mini-TL;DR: if you really vallue full dock functionality, stay with CROMI.
Regarding the dockfirmware updates: we've had a CleamROM update (so Scott's original CROM, not sbdags' CROMI) that included firmware updates for the camera and the touchpad. I have no idea where ASUS hides them -- I didn't bother looking that up -- but it just shows you could still receive updates to the (dock) firmware if you're going the stock-based custom ROM route...

Short answer is no
Both CM10.1 (by now) and CRomI make advantage of the dock, and although my prefence goes to CRomI, I have seen great development in the CM10.1 section, more specifically how the rom makes use of the dock.
So no worries!
Root it and have a much faster (almost blazing) piece of aesthetic machinery!

As far as the noob bashing is concerned: it's not too bad in here. I'm possibly one of the most agressive members -- at least as far as cases of non-reading are concerned. Some people just can't be bothered to use the search function, or even glance over the 5 similarly named topics on the first page of a forum ("howz do I n00b root JB?"), and sometimes that really gets to me. Yeah, the biggest offender in user forums has been Adobe. Back around 2002, '03, when I was still in school, they were a great way to figure out how to use new tools, and work your way through problems. Eventually they turned into a superiority-fest, with nothing but flaming. You'd mention that you needed to handle files a certain way, or use certain file formats, and instead of help, you'd just get a bunch of replies calling you a moron for doing the proces the way you were doing it, stuff like that. It got bad enough that I quit using them altogether after 4-5 years of referring people to them whenever possible.
I've been staying away from this board only because I'm not a dev, just a user, and I figured this was a little above my pay grade, so to speak, but over the last couple of years, I've ended up here more and more, so I'm really liking the community! :good:

Most of us are not developers themselves, but just well-meaning halfnoobs. (I'm speaking for myself here, no need for anyone else to feel offended. ) XDA is OK, but a little sometimes not-so-)friendly 'policing' has to be done to keep it that way. Sometimes it only takes a little nudge -- I'd rather have us cleanse ourselves than to be dependent on a moderator for every single time something small happens. These guys -- although REALLY relaxed in our parts -- do have a lot to deal with without us giving them more to do. If it really gets too hot too handle, I mostly back out anyway, or go the PM route.
CM10.1 plays nice with dock.

Are there any issues that pop up at all when flashing the tablet, or do all of the features work? I still want the second battery meter and the multi-touch capabilities on the trackpad, for example. Also, while I'm here, one more thing: Are there custom ROMs for the dock out there?

CM10.1 works well with the dock, all function keys work, you will just not get the onscreen notifications that they have been pressed (and screen brightness is a bt more laggy but still works fine). if you want button press notifications for function keys you can turn them on in CM10.1 settings but they pop up in the notification drawer rather than in the darkened rectangle in the center of the screen. I think CM10.1 is worth any mild decrease in dock functionality (like no function key notifications). Not sure about the USB port on any ROMS.

[Q] Erroneous display of numbers issue on TF700

This is a hard one to describe, but haven't found any references to the same problem elsewhere.
Certain app (many) show certain number fields as many orders of magnitude larger than they should be, except eBay app, which shows 0 cost for everything - which would be nice if it were true. See screenshots.
Any ideas?
It's unlocked and rooted, with an early 'stock' JB ROM
I have no idea what is causing this, but I would just flash the latest 4.2.1 firmware and root it with Motochopper if you want to stay on stock.
But since you are unlocked already - why don't you try a custom rom like CROMi-X 4.7? SO much better than stock.....

Yeah, I thought I might just try flashing 4.2.1 and see if that helped with this, and more generally.
I've got some general ingrained aversion to going off-stock, dunno why really. I subject my wife to custom ROMs with no concern
Well, if i'm flashing anyway, I might as well check out your CROMi-X suggestion. The main benefit I would be looking for would be speed, I find the Infinity slower than i'd like...
Cheers
