Still worth buying? Second thoughts - Asus Transformer TF700

Hey guys,
I really wanted the tf700 since Asus first showed it to the crowd.
But now, I am starting to have second thoughts, since I am reading from a lot of different sources that there are a lot of I/O issues and that maybe Asus just chose the wrong components to make use of the Tegra 3 power.
What do you think?
Should I buy the Asus Infinity or should I go for the Samsung Note 10.1?
Which has no Tegra 3, but has no I/O issues either.
Thanks a lot guys.
Doesn't matter how long or short your answer might be, please just leave something as a reply
EDIT: I even made a little poll, so it has become even easier for the people of few words to get the message across

You really need to try both devices and decide for yourself - otherwise, you'll always be wondering if you were better off with the other device!
In my opinion, the two devices are geared toward different type of users. If you really have a use for the Spen, the Note may be the better choice for you. If you would rather have a keyboard dock (with an extra battery and ports), then the TF700 may be the better choice.
In my case, the TF700 was a no-brainer - I have no use for the Spen whatsoever but I have the need for the keyboard dock (for taking notes at work, etc). I have no desire to try and take handwritten notes on a tablet. I'd much rather type my notes and have them easily searchable, etc.
Again, this is a decision that *you* have to make based on your needs. You will not be happy until you try both devices though...

Thanks!
I am just worried about the I/O and browsing speed, which is not the fastest. However, that might also be due to the internet connection I have tested it on
How did you experience your first browsing experience on your tf700

Personally, I installed Boat browser, which is *much* faster than the stock browser or the Chrome browser. It makes the browsing experience very fast and stable...

I guess I've been lucky with the 700 I have.
I'm not a power user however.
I have found some very good tips here on XDA that have really made the ICS experience bearable COL
I would recommend this tablet over a few others I've owned.
My purchase was kind of based on the future of the Android OS and the best available hardware for a tablet.
Frankly if I had been reading about the tablet in this forum section I may have been very hesitant about the purchase.
In any case if you buy...make sure a return will be easy for you.

Ive had mine for over a week and I am very pleased with it. Weird issues sometimes where it wont turn on after turning screen off, but thats it. It browses fast on chrome and the screen is insane. I haven't looked back.

Imo, with some JB love and a custom Rom, this tablet will be untouchable. Right now it does have issues. But its nothing our devs can't handle.

Thank you for the advise!
I guess I may root the tf700 the moment I decide to buy one!
And then put Zeus' ROM on it.
(BTW: weren't you coming from the Xoom as well? I think I've seen you around on those forums also! )

Remember - in order to install custom ROMs (such as Zeus), you need to unlock the bootloader, which voids your warranty (Asus keeps track of the serial number when you unlock the bootloader).
So, before unlocking, make sure that a) your device doesn't have any major flaws and b) I'd highly recommend some sort of third party warranty, such as Square Trade, so that if your tablet has some sort of hardware issue at a later point, you can get it replaced/repaired as Asus won't touch it.
It really is worth it to install Zeus ROM - it makes the TF700 experience *much* better - just make sure you cover yourself, as Asus completely writes you off once you unlock....

I still have my Xoom, rocking teameos Jellybean nightlies. The Xoom is a great, underrated device, It took the Infinity, with its fantastic screen, dock and expandabilty to muscle my beloved Xoom out of the way as my go-to tab.

However, I hope these processes won't be too different from the Xoom

Okay
Guess that only makes sense, since there's no official code to be found yet for the tf700.
We'll have to be patient then!
I think your reactions have convinced me to go and buy a TF700, although I am still waiting for some more votes, to check if everybody agrees
(BTW: what is Browser2RAM ?)

Browser2RAM is a tweak to cache web data to RAM instead of the storage inside the device (which is supposedly the cause of some of the TF700 performance issues).
Here is some detailed info on Browser2RAM:

Thanks! Didn't know there was a similar tweak available. That's cool!
I see about 80% of the people say I should stick with the TF700, and seeing how this is a TF700 forum, I think the actual number of 'experts' saying I should go for the TF700 is more like 60%
So I guess I should go and find out myself which I like better.
But that...
- 1080p display
- bright IPS+ technology
- updated Tegra 3
- keyboard dock with extended battery
... make me want a TF700
However, the 2 GB of RAM and S-Pen make me want to go for that Samsung
I guess when weighing out the pros and cons I *should* go for the Asus.

I know it's not a true image of what all XDA experts think, but that's not what I wanted either!
I wanted to know: do you - the TF700 owners- think I should stick with my initial choice or not.
Just to see: is there a high possibility that I will dislike the purchase after a couple of weeks or not.
Apparently 85% of TF700 owners would still pick the TF700, so in my opinion that's good enough to convince me to stick with the TF700.
However, you are right that, if I wanted more objective opinions, I should have also posted on the Note forums
Thanks again, though, for your contribution to this thread. (If only even more people did the same ^^)

hey, I wrote a little comparison of both devices, perhaps that can help.

TF700 Arriving Today Need Debrief

So I ended up returning my prime after 8 months, and ordered a tf700. It's hard to read up so much in the prime forums and now I'm a newb to these neck of the woods. I don't see much developement going on for the tf700 in the forum, maybe cuz it's still new?
I have read its a pretty solid upgrade from the prime considering the I/O issues I've read about. Having said that, what does it come shipped with? Honecomb? I know its rootable, and unlockable. Theres a working clockwork right?
Any better than stock roms to flash at the moment? Or just wait it out until JB? Thanks fellows...time to read some more
It is completely rootable and unlockable. I believe theres CWM and TWRP. Comes with ICS. Might need to do an update. My personal opinion is to wait for JB.
This probably should be in Q&A also.
Sent from my Transformer Infinity.
The Infinity is at its infancy. So custom roms are still in its early stages and bugs will be evident but this tablet is definitely an upgrade to the Prime which I sold for the Infinity. When I had my Prime I could only get two bars from my bedroom while my router was in the living area. Now I have full freakin bars! GPS is just as accurate and locks on to as many as the Extension kit. It has some performances issues but nothing Jelly Bean can remedy. Battery is ok doesn't last as long compared to Prime, but I'm sure an update or two will fix that. Also it will heat up on you because of that higher res screen. Mine got as high as 108.9° when playing games.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium App
I updated from the Prime and must say that the Infinity is a huge upgrade. It may not seem like much but the software is faster and the build quality has improved. Stuff like the improved buttons and the change of location of the headphone jack doesn't seem like much, but is well thought out, especially when it is in the dock. And the WiFi performance is 10 times better than the Prime, which is a huge upgrade. I am very pleased with this device and should have been what the Prime was.

I'm very happy with mine even though it's still locked and I'm not running CleanRom.
2.4 CleanROM here, no Clemsyn yet (trying 2.4 out for bit first to get some feel for the improvements in fluidity -- the Master himself asked for this ) -- great tablet. Stock is less than impressive, but with some TLC, the 700 is a fiery monster.
I'm very happy with this tablet. With its customized doc it is better than all the other Android tablets out there IMHO.
Asus has released several OTAs, showing they are continually involved in keeping this table up to date.
Add me to the list of happy users. After unlocking, flashing cm10, very satisfied with this!
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Bought mine end of september and got ota to ics immediately and 1 week later ota to jb.
Have no build problems ( very well build) and it was fast and fluid on stock and locked.
Unlocked and rooted after 5 weeks and flashed cleanrom.
Well from the first day I said it is the best device I bought since a long time and for me as business user it's replacing my laptop 90% of the time easily.
The dock and screen are excellent and it is the best choice I made in comparison to other tablets.
No Icrap because it is MY tablet and compared with other tablets it is without competition.
What you want more: Good build quality, very fast and fluid and smooth, excellent dock and screen, very good battery life when on travel (min 14 hrs).
Never thought it was that good :good::good:
It could be better. I'm rooted and debloated but I'm not going to ROM it. I don't want to go down that same path as I did with my phone - too many problems, sleepless nights, headaches, and compromises. I'm done being a nerd.

Hey! Hey!
Out of the box I was happy, I received a good build quality...no squeaky screen, the tab and dock where flawless. (lucky me ).
I was later made much happier by unlocking, rooting, custom recovery and custom ROM......My flavour of choice was CleanROM. Still on 2.3 with Clemsysn's OC and bit depth mods. Also using the Data2SD (enhanced) mod. All of this took a good tablet experience and made it a LOT better.
Now if we could get Samsung's Quality Control to teach Asus how to build a device, and get Asus to teach Samsung how to develop for frequent updates. Match made in heaven. (I hope BOTH Sammysong and Assus are reading this).
CHEERS!
Brad
CleanRom 2.4+Clemsyn kernal=happiness
Stock, nonrooted. I'm perfectly happy with it.
no , i have two problems
1-i can not update camera firmware.it appear and failed on each rebooting time
2-i can not unlock bootloader.it failed with network issue.i get unknown network error

How would you grade this tablet?

I've had this tablet since Christmas, got it with the keyboard dock and a Poetic case for work (journalism) hoping that it would entirely replace my laptop, which was a beater since my other one broke. Since using it I've overall loved the experience, but I do have a number of gripes.
The Good:
- Keyboard is equally as impressive as any laptop I've used. Responsive, ensures that I can continue to be productive while on the go.
- Battery life is unreal
- Speaker quality equals or betters that of an iPad, hands down.
- For being plastic, the build quality of this thing is awesome.
- ASUS has been nothing but supportive, ensuring that my device is unlocked quickly and under warranty.
- Plays the occasional game well and loads them pretty quickly
- The USB and HDMI outlets, while I haven't used them extensively, are going to come in handy.
- Charges extremely fast
The Bad:
- I can never find the power button in tablet mode. It's ergonomically terrible. And when docked, there's no button to press to turn the screen on quickly (that I know of)
- Despite coming preloaded with JB, this thing lags worse than my HTC Sensation. It's not rooted, but out of the box it lags. Takes like ten seconds to open up Google Now for pete's sake.
- Browser crashes all the time
- Proprietary cable is way too short and proprietary cables blow
- Internet browsing is laggy and slow to load more often than not
- Trackpad on the dock is the worst on any keyboard I've ever used in terms of responsiveness and random touches
- Rooting seems complicated
- The screen is not as sharp or as bright as I expected
Overall: B+
It's more than I could ever expect out of a tablet, to be honest. I probably should have sprung for an UltraBook for my needs, but this will be fun in the meantime. This may be my first tablet, but I can assure you that every tablet I buy from here on out will come with a keyboard. It has given me a good idea of what to look for in a tablet and I really do enjoy using it over any other device I've owned aside from my phone. For all it's specs, performance isn't where it should be, but I have a sneaky suspicion once I root this thing there may still be hope for solving all this lag.
What would you grade this tablet? What are your likes? Dislikes? I'm curious to find out about everyone else's experiences with the 300, and perhaps some helpful advice. Thanks!

When stock I would say a 6/7 out of 10. Its slow, browser crashes and espesially after Jelly Bean update i decided to unlock and root cause it was a pain to use sometimes. Also alot of problems while typing. Whole sentences are suddenly gone, autocorrect is horrible and anyoing, and sometimes even freezes while im writig.
With Custom ROMs i would say a 8 out of 10. Alot faster and smoother than stock.
Imo, the screen is very good. Compared to TF101, colors are better and brighter.
Buying Quad Core cpu I expected, that EVERY game will run smoothly. I bought Dark Knight and ... zonk, lags everywhere. I thought my Tegra 3 is broken
ok so I agree 1000%. I rooted mine, installed cm10 (not 10.1 yet) along with untermensh's kernel and its freaking lightning fast. it was maybe a C- before. Now it is a solid A!

I'd give this thing a 5 out of 10 on stock. Rooted and with agps flashed and apps to SD its a 11 out of 10. I run clean ROM 3.0.4 and unters 4.4.20 kernal and as I've said before it makes all the difference in the world on this machine. The screen is good but the infinity screen is better however I prefer this to all other tabs currently marketed except Samsung note 10.1 but the note isn't optimized for tegra games so all in all this one won me over

Does a custom ROM really make a big difference? This thing really does lag awfully sometimes on stock and i'm a bit skeptical that it can improve significantly
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
It makes so much of a difference on mine I could never concieve of loading the stock ROM again. The stock has serious I/o issues bud not to mention all the other crap. Now don't get me wrong there is a down side. On jelly bean u have to unlock so u lose your warranty and that's a risk. It is also a lot of work to install all the ROMs and patches and the first time on any device will scare the bejesus outta any man but when its done, at least for me, its a thing of beauty on this machine in particular. I'd did a lot of research before I got started and finally took the plunge. Course I've done this on several devices but every time is stressful lol. Good luck man for the benchmark scores on my machine just look at the poor androbench scores thread in this section. I just posted pics there that will show you how much of a difference it makes when you root and rom
---------- Post added at 10:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 PM ----------
P.S. you mentioned lag so I'll let you know browser to ram after you root takes care of that in browsing and as you can see from the screenshots in the other thread the I/o is fixed and or gone around after root and custom ROM installed.
Thanks for the informative reply. I usually use chrome though so I don't think browser2ram will work for that or so I've read.

Yes.
3/10
I've been regretting this purchase since after 1 month of owning it, that why a few months ago I was pretty active on this forum asking questions but since the day I figured out this tablet is what I should not have purchased, I stopped browsing this forum.
I was so sad because I saved my money for months to buy this tablet and what I got wasn't what I expected.
Like you said, this thing lags like crazy, it's because of the I/O issue I believe. Games run laggy, cuz they need to read/write a lot. Copying 100MB takes 10 minutes. I waited for years for it to copy mmy music library to this tablet. Forget about browsing the Web,
I even thought this is an issue with android and I thought I will not ever buy an android device again, until my sister got the galaxy s3 and it's damn fast
Maybe I'll leave a review someday, but basically this tablet is very good, except for the fact that Asus put a cheap slow flash storage in it. If not, I'd rate it 8/10 if there's no i/O issue,
Asus has been known for putting slow flash storage in their devices from the tf201, tf300, even the flagship tf700, and even though the nexus 7 has a faster flash storage that transformers, it's still very slow compared to other tablets.

I have to agree with other comments here, the stock rom is a piece of crap. Not being able to browse on the stock browser WTF ? I've said this before but Asus REALLY needs to fix their stock rom. If the ROMS from here can make the tablet fly then why can't Asus do it?
I had my tablet for 6 months and only unlocked and flashed TWRP with Cleanroom in the last week. I've now used the tablet more in the last week than I had in the previous 6 months, it's made such a difference. I now enjoy using the tablet rather than wanting to throw it against the wall :silly:
I bought mine with the keyboard dock, it makes the tablet more versatile extends the battery life and with a wireless mouse is almost a notebook / netbook replacement.
I notice the OP wrote the proprietary cable is too short.... you can pick up a 2m cable on eBay or Amazon really cheap, mine was delivered last week. Though the proprietary cable does blow, from what I've read it allows the tablet to be charged quicker than a normal usb cable (please correct me if I am wrong).
Stock rom: 3 out of 10 (Slow, hangs, browser crashes.... piece of crap)
Cleanrom: 10 out of 10 (Everything works perfectly now)
Perhaps the wrong thread but what browser do you guys use on this ROM? I like stock ROM so so much but it doesnt work half the time. Like it doesn't load pages or the back button doesn't return me. Also it can use flash!
I'm gonna start to try use chrome but I like the progress bar. I tried dolphin browser but its not like a conventional browser, doesn't have a back button etc.
Firefox doesn't have an easy add tab button. Same with Opera, don't think its that nippy, hangs n lags.
I found Opera Mobile worked best on the stock rom

Thank you.
Does a custom ROM really make a big difference? This thing really does lag awfully sometimes on stock and i'm a bit skeptical that it can improve significantly

Thanks to everyone in this thread who has helped. I think I will move onto cleanrom after my tablet goes into repairs. Do apps perform better on cleanrom as well? Such as chrome and other things

[Q] Asus TF700 very slow

I've just bought a Asus TF700T.
I'm very disappointed because my tablet is very slow (keyboard is espacially slow) and sometimes the browser crashed.
I've updated my asus firmwire.
Android : 4.1.1
Kernel : 3.1.10-00001
I don't want to void my warranty. How can I make my tablet works fine ?
Thanks
Well, if you really don't want to void your warranty, you could first try to do a cold boot.
You do this by powering you tablet off and then press and hold both the volume up and power button at the same time. Release them once you get a 4 icon menu and do not touch any button for ten seconds. It should then perform a cold boot.
If that doesn't make it snappier, you should maybe at least consider rooting. This doesn't (completely) void your warranty and you can always undo it
When you are rooted, you could install LagFix and Browser2Ram, that should speed things up.

hahaha.... take it back pat , and get the one from the fruitshop!
or
kiss that warranty goodbye
Good advice from the previous 2 gentlemen. I do believe its "volume down + power" but all the same..... i too have the browser lag issue. My fix is to do pushups until the page loads. I call it "Browser2Chest".....:highfive:

That must give you huge pectorals with two weeks of steady browsing. I must say that, while on CROMI 3.x, the stock browser is the fastest, and pretty stable at that.
I vote for voiding the "warranty" -- I ran into a hardware problem last week, and ASUS just juts it down to "user-induced damages", so that "warranty" is crap anyway.
browser2chest +1
yep... only fix install browser2chest.apk :highfive:

Yeah i guess we have to take the "glass is half full" perspective sometimes......for all its faults, i DO really enjoy this tab.
You may absolutely use the "Browser2Chest" bit. We are in the wildwest of copyrights and royalties, the INTERWEBZ!!!!! .....for all intents and purposes, one ginormous sentient being, living seperate lives, together, through copper and glass.
I really should take your advice and ROM it up. Seems to really unleash the device's true capabilities........ its on "the list".
Cheers all......
If you are worried about a warranty then buy one from Square Trade. After that, unlock, install TWRP, backup, and install CROMI. The difference is amazing and unfortunately very necessary for a usable tablet.

Factory reset. Update to latest firmware. I think there's a newer version. Use original browser and not chrome.

Yes, stock browser is faster then chrome or firefox, but it's still slow. My advice to OP - unlock it, if you don't plan on selling it any time soon.
I would suggest you return your tablet, try some others, then make up your mind. I've been very disappointed with the TF700, if you read the forums, you will see it is just not a very polished device. I have buyers remorse, I can't shake the feeling that my snapdragon 3, 1.5Ghz phone is more stable and faster then my $600 tablet.

Depends on which forums you read..... and which posts on those forums....
IMHO the TF700 and the Nexus 10 are neck to neck the best tablets around.
I've long been reluctant to void the warranty, but ever since I unlocked my TF700 and flashed CleanROM Inheritance - boy, what fun!
Browser lag? Non-existent! The stock browser screams! And even Chrome is twice as fast.
Everything else is as smooth as butter, apps just snap open, scrolling is smooth.... This is how the tablet should have been in the first place.
Read the guides on flashing custom ROMs on this forum. Read some more and when you think you read enough, read it all again.
I've been paranoid about bricking my tablet, but if you read those "bricked my device" threads, you realize, a lot of these guys obviously learn by doing, because most of their mistakes are covered in one or the other of the threads.

I second this 100%. I just decided to do all this (void my warranty and install CROMI), and absolutely, the stock browser is MUCH faster (no more messages telling me to wait every time I touch the screen while it's loading a webpage, it scrolls like butter, and even seems to load pages faster). I'm pretty convinced that the smoothness/snappiness of the UI is also significantly improved compared to Jelly Bean, but the diference there is a little less obvious. We'll see how things as I install more and more apps - it's early days, and I'm installing apps slowly.
Having said all that, however, I wonder how much of the speed improvement in stock browser are due to Browser2RAM as opposed to CROMI per se.

It's both. I have modded the browser as well. Go to settings advanced and you will see some new settings to see what I have set as default.
With supposedly 4.2.1 coming to the tf700 soon hopefully it will clear up a lot of problems stock wise. Some people have no trouble on 4.1.1, some do. If 4.2.1 clear a lot of problem stock wise, I cant wait to see the Cromi of 4.2.1

Curious, are any games and such any 'smoother' or faster?
I notice a lot of stutter and lag on my stock tablet. Like "Heros call", "Dragon Slayer" and even GTA all have bad stutter at times.
I too feel the buyers remorse, I bought this tablet just 4 days ago, and I want it to be perfectly alright before rooting it, which I do intend, if I can't get the money back, or atleast first get one without the worst backlightbleed I've seen yet which the one I has have. I was worried about the 1gb of RAM that this tablet has, but after checking the RAM used on my phone (Nexus 4) quite a few times, and never seeing it go over 1gb of usage, I didn't think that would become a problem. But now with the tablet in my hands I can see it is not possible to have a browser with 4-5 tabs idle while searching for music in spotify with having them reloading as I open up the browser again. Nor is it easy to live with all the black screens when changing apps and the freezes that happen when you just don't want them to.
This thing cost me 1200$ (Yes, I live in europe, things are not cheap over here, and yes, that was the cheapest I could possibly get it) and at that premium price, I really hoped that it atleast would be on-par with the HOX
I am no troll, just not convinced that this tablet is worth the premium, even the iPad which is always joked about being overpriced is cheaper than this tablet (only the 128gb version was more expensive) It's very depressing, even though I know this tablet can be used for so much more than being and app-central, it all comes down to how the tablet basically performs.
TLR I regret buying, maybe I should have waited for the next generation.
I hope it was easy enough to read, I'm not the best at building big posts.
Offtopic: How is the performance of Netflix on your TF700T?
Most lag is due the tegra3 having to push a full hd screen. That is why when gaming and browsing it lags. Few screens on any other tablet out there has as nice of a screen as the tf700. Soon 4.2.1 will be released by ASUS, even sooner for Cromi users, and I hope it helps some.

[Q] Erroneous display of numbers issue on TF700

This is a hard one to describe, but haven't found any references to the same problem elsewhere.
Certain app (many) show certain number fields as many orders of magnitude larger than they should be, except eBay app, which shows 0 cost for everything - which would be nice if it were true. See screenshots.
Any ideas?
It's unlocked and rooted, with an early 'stock' JB ROM
I have no idea what is causing this, but I would just flash the latest 4.2.1 firmware and root it with Motochopper if you want to stay on stock.
But since you are unlocked already - why don't you try a custom rom like CROMi-X 4.7? SO much better than stock.....
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 4
Yeah, I thought I might just try flashing 4.2.1 and see if that helped with this, and more generally.
I've got some general ingrained aversion to going off-stock, dunno why really. I subject my wife to custom ROMs with no concern
Well, if i'm flashing anyway, I might as well check out your CROMi-X suggestion. The main benefit I would be looking for would be speed, I find the Infinity slower than i'd like...
Cheers
