When do you guys think the Galaxy S3 Developer Edition for Verizon will come out?
It's been two weeks since they announced it on Samsung's site.
It looks like that Samsung page still says "Coming Soon". I'm thinking about getting one. I have the GNex and I just don't know if I should wait for the next Nexus phone or not.
Samsung rep says 'very' soon!
I chatted with a Samsung rep on their site, and they specifically said that it would be VERY soon:
'Page: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: How soon might the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III Developer Edition come out? I really am looking forward to that unlocked bootloader! And with Motorola announcing that they'll now have unlocked bootloaders for future phones, I may just get the RAZR HD when it comes out rather than the SIII Developer Edition if it's taking so long to come out!
Page: I understand that you want to know when S III Developer phones are available for purchase. Am I correct?
Visitor: Correct! Specifically the Verizon version, actually!
Page: Thank you.
Page: I will be glad to assist you.
Page: Please give me a couple of minutes while I gather the required information.
Visitor: I guess I wasn't aware that there were other kinds! Seeing as all the other carriers' versions are unlockable. Dang Verizon. :/
Visitor: Take your time! Thanks a ton!
Page: You are welcome.
Visitor: I work in sales; I completely respect that you have a lot to do, so no rush.
Page: Thank you.
Page: Thank you for being on hold.'
Visitor: Yep!
Page: The developer version will be released very soon. However, we do not have the exact date when it will be released.

That was wasn't a rep you chatted with unless you consider a computer a rep. Bull **** cookie cutter response from a stupid Samsung database. This whole thing pisses me off. I'm getting the vzw one again and will just deal with kexec in hopes something more permanent comes along. I hope devs shine the dev edition in boycott of this crap.

With something like a firmware upgrade why do these companies bother releasing it in different countries at different times? Why not do just one worldwide release for it?

Why not US? Money.
The companies in the United States want money. Plain and simple. Most companies want money, that is true, however the ones here in the US want money more than anything else.
That's why.
How does releasing a firmware in the US later give a company more money? If the firmware has been created funds don't need to be allocated to R&D. I'm in your boat though, it's BS. Can we run UK releases on our our phones?

I would agree with you 100% there, however...
Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and the worst one of all AT&T have to put their "finishing touches" on them, thus delaying not only the release of the update, but also making sure that funds ARE allocated to their R&D to make those releases possible for their repective services.
In other words, the telecom companies need to mess up the 2.2 release so we all here can go in and fix them.
That's how the Circle of Technology works. ^_^
Why do you say that AT&T is the worst when they were the first to release a Galaxy S device? Just curious.
I would infer that AT&T will be the first U.S. Galaxy S device to get Froyo......of course that could be wishful thinking since I have a Captivate.....

Have you taken a look at the Samsung firmware leaks. All of them are fully loaded with bloatware. Samsung is putting everything on themselves. AT&T will probably only test it on their network and then release it.
How do we let AT&T know to not slack on releasing the 2.2 upgrade
I have already wrote to Samsung through their website about releasing the upgrade on time. How do we let AT&T know.

lol...not to rain on your parade, but I dont think it is in our hands.
Can someone link to this tweet? I am curious
It seems like to me that if indeed AT&T is incapable of doing OTA updates (dont know if this is true or not) then it would make sense to package the gps and froyo updates in just one flash and release rather than do it one at a time

It will get updated to gingerbread at some point, but nobody knows when.
Most of us guessed towards the end of September(about a month after the EP1W GB leak was released publicly)
Here's a fact: Nobody knows exactly when it is coming out. Even the support people at Verizon don't know. They are notified that something is on the way, but they don't tell them until it actually hits the streets.
My opinion, based on info i've gained reading various sources: It should be soon, probably in the next couple weeks. And it won't be EP1W.
I had a brief twitter conversation with p3 a couple days back, asking him if he had heard anything since the leak was released. He didn't offer any info on ETA, but DID say that he knows EP1W is no longer official...in his words, they "blew past" EP1W
This could be good, as personally I consider EP1W rather unstable (in my personal experience) and would love it if the final, official GB release is being developed further to deal with those kinds of issues. But... this could also add significant time to the release cycle as well.

if the release for Gingerbread on the Droid 2/Droid X are any "guidelines", i'd say another 2 months with verizon's release schedule.
On two different occasions with two different people at the Verizon store i was told with authority to expect an update this month (sept). We will see. I tried checking for software updates on the verizon site but it wouldn't let me enter my model, which was strange. I know only the owner's manual was on there but maybe they're getting ready to add something.
I meant the Samsung page- sorry!
When is gingerbread coming to the charge? Not happy with buggy froyo.

yeah my understanding is there are at least 2 newer versions out beside EP1W. Guess they are still tweaking it a ton. I would have thought we would have it by now, but patience is a virtue I guess.
I would rather wait and get it right, then get it an have it suck.

Well, I for one can say that the Humble ROMs from danalo have been faster and more battery efficient than the stock ROMs from Samsung. So, I would be willing to bet that the Humble ROMs available now are going to be better than whatever Samsung has for the next "official" release.
That is, until Cyanogen starts his development job at Samsung, and gets some really awesome CM-like stuff incorporated into the stock Sammy ROMs.
Should be by the end of the month like the thunderbolt update.can't wait!

The guys at the Costco booth don't work for Verizon for once. The one's at my Costco are incompetent and seem to give two ****s about their job or helping the customer. I would HIGHLY recommend taking anything they tell you with a grain of salt. I find it very hard to believe they would have any true insider information on this.
Anything the guys at the booth are telling you is hogwash. They are just repeating something a co-worker or customer told them. Verizon does not provide those details to salespeople. Even the tech support people only have vague info like "coming soon", or maaaaaaybe a "this month". You can't miss target dates that you never announce in the first place.
VZ's own techs don't know when the update is coming.

Exactly right. Verizon does not tell them. Truth be told, most of these guys find out about the software updates when a customer brings in their phone because of a problem the update caused.

I'm confused about: will they or won't they unlock it? I hope it's true...
Though some chats are very specific to the meaning behind unlock, I can't help but think that this means GSM unlock.

Obviously I hope it's true but I severely doubt it. I mean, how often do low level customer service reps know info like that before we do? Out of the 6 people I talked to at vzw none even knew the phone was shipped early for pre orders...
Hopefully it's not a way to trick the masses into upgrading to block the way we get root now.

This is what I'm thinking as they've been mentioning that specific unlock for some time as part of an early OTA update. I hope it's the bootloader that's really being discussed but I certainly have my doubts.

maybe
Well, I don't believe it either, but there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. I went into chat and asked. I encourage as many people to do this just so verizon may realize there's a huge interest for it. To do this, just go to the verizon page and pretend you're buying the SIII. There's a button that says 'chat with rep', or just wait there for a minute and you will get a popup.
Here's my transcript... If you don't believe me, go do it yourself!
Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience.
You are now chatting with 'Alesha'
Mike: Hi! I'm interested in the S III but don't like it having the locked bootloader. Will Verizon release an update to unlock the bootloader?
Alesha: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
Alesha: ?
Alesha: Yes
Mike: This isn't the GSM unlocker so you can use the phone wherever in the world, this is to unlock the bootloader to allow for developers, correct?
Alesha: Right
Mike: and is there an ETA on this?
Alesha: No information released
Mike: OK, well, thank you very much for the information!
Don't believe these Verizon reps for a second. Many of them can't think for themselves and only regurgitate what the higher ups tell them. I worked in their call center last year and most of my co-workers had no idea what rooting, roms, bootloaders, etc. were.
NOT happening.

Not very optimistic:
Dear Alexander,
Thank you for taking the time to email in with regards to the Samsung Galaxy SIII. Alexander, my name is Nick. I hear you with regards to the locked bootloader situation. I too was hoping we would follow suit. Currently we will be offering the developers version of the SIII, which comes with a unlocked bootloader for our customers. I do hope that we make a change to the current model that is out, and that we unlock the bootloader, but currently there are no plans to do so. At the very least I hope that we at least consider selling the unlocked version in a subsidized manner with a contract, as opposed to selling it full retail through Samsung.
Your voices are being heard, and I hope we truly consider some other options for our customers in the development community. In the meantime, really, the only other option I can recommend is to maybe sell your SIII. I am sure you can find someone who may not be interested in the unlocked version, but would like to upgrade to that phone and not be under contract. Remember the 16 GB model starts at $599.99. Depending how much you paid, I would charge as much as possible for the phone since they are coming out on top without the contract, and use the money you get towards the unlocked version. It may not be ideal, but at least there are some options for now.
Thank you for being the best part of Verizon Wireless, Alexander. Take care and have a great week.
Sincerely,
Nick

Can't believe he told you to sell the device.
Yea, that was like a wtf moment. What I interpreted it as was "Buy device for $200, try to gamble it off for at least $400. Then go shell out another $200 and purchase the developer edition."
Not only does that void any chance of insurance but I would purchase the phone unsubsidized if I wanted a "Developer's Phone".
This is a new corporate low even their employees don't like their actions. I work for Apple, we would never tell our customers to do something like that.
EDIT: Just to clarify, no I am not an apple fanboy... I do not own an apple product. Not even an iPod. It's just my job to represent them.

Aparently samsung does have the rights to the locked bootloader. This tech support associate says that samsung has released a bootloader unlock code to be purchased on their developer site. However it aslo seems samsung is trying to tax the developers and play the community like a violin. Here is the online chat with samsung:
Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.

Visitor: Hello, Patrick
Patrick: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: I looking for an answer to a very common question about the galaxy s3, however i can not find a solid definite answer. What is the status of the locked bootloader in terms of actually unlocking it? and why was it locked in the first place?
Patrick: Please give me a moment while I go through the inquiry.
Visitor: okay
Patrick: Thank you.
Patrick: I am glad to assist you.
Patrick: Have you unlocked the device from carrier.
Visitor: no, i have not. i have the verizon version and have not modified it in any way
Patrick: Thank you for the information.
Patrick: In order to unlock the device I request you to please contact the carrier support team.
Patrick: You can contact Verizon support at 1-888-466-4646.
Click here to reach them online.
Visitor: i am looking to unlock the bootloader. the bootloader i have heard is locked by manufacturer, not verizon
Visitor: i am not looking to unlock the carrier, this is completely different
Visitor: the bootloader is what allows us developers to flash a custom kernel/firmware onto the device
Patrick: Thank you for the details.
Patrick: Would you mind If I take 3 minutes while I gather the required information on your request?
Visitor: no, problem. go right ahead
Patrick: Thank you.
Patrick: Thank you for holding.
Patrick: You can purchase the unlock code for the bootloader from the developer's site from the below given link.
Patrick: developer.samsungmobile.com/Developer/index (dot "jsp')
Visitor: thank you very much. however, isnt this taxing us for being developers?
Patrick: May be we are not sure about the taxing information.
Visitor: the developers improove further on your products and i believe that alone should allow an unlock code. and i cant seem to find the place to purchase it regardless
Patrick: I understand your concern.
Patrick: For more information on your query you can contact our voice support team.
Patrick: I appreciate the patience you displayed while we worked together on this issue.
Patrick: You can contact our dedicated Galaxy S phones voice support team at 1-877-EZ2GALAXY (1-877-392-4252).They are available 24/7.
Visitor: before you go could you please give me a direct link to the purchase site for the unlock code?
Visitor: for refrence. i would reccomend it to other developers if it is reasonably priced
Patrick: I am sorry to say that we do not have the direct link to purchase site for the unlock code.
Visitor: does it really exist yet?
Patrick: Yes, It exists as it is required for every developer.
Visitor: i mean the website
Patrick: I am sorry we so not have the specific weblink on your requirement.
Patrick: *Do.
Visitor: The website does exist though, is that correct?
Patrick: Yes.
Visitor: okay. i will contact samsung further after i look into this. thank you for your time.
Patrick: You're welcome. Is there anything else I can assist you with?
Visitor: would you know the price of the actual unlock code?
Visitor: for the bootloader
Patrick: As the technical support department we do not have the information on the actual cost for the unlock code.
Visitor: okay, and do you have actual proof of the websites existance so i am confident i am not wasting my time?
Patrick: Would you mind If I take 3 minutes while I gather the required information on your request?

Patrick: According to our information there exist the website which provides the detailed information on the cost for unlock code with the model number and all the information related to the unlock code is included.
Visitor: I am sorry, but that does not seem like much proof to me. do you have further information?

Visitor: Cant you give me the information?
Visitor: This is a tech support chat.
Patrick: I am sorry to say that as the technical support department we do not have the information on unlock code.
Visitor: Then who will? Shouldnt tech support be responsible for technical issues? if not, then who exactly can i talk to about this issue?
Patrick: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.
Patrick: I do understand your concern. If we do have details about unlock boot loader from our end, I would have provided details. Unfortunately, we do not have details from our end.
Visitor: Then who would have the information? Samsung designed the phone. This is getting tedious.
Patrick: In this regard, please contact our voice support team once. If they do have details, they will assist you further.

This was the exact conversation. However, i modified the outside links because i am not allowed by xda to post them yet. I will be calling samsung soon however not today because i recently had teeth extracted. Once i have healed enough to talk through the long conversations i expect. I will post more about this alleged bootloader unlock code. Feel free to contact them and post your information about an official unlock too.
Edit: Big thanks to AndroidGraphix for this post.

Here's an official statement. I tried my best to convert it. I actually did end up converted it but youtube wouldn't let me upload an audio file without video content. Anyways, here's the homemade video of me recording the recorded call. I'll also attach it to this post for anyone wanting to download the raw content.

I'll **** if this is real. Don't have high hopes though. Customer service agent sounds like an idiot.

The conversation is legit. However he.did seem to be an idiot. But we could use this against samsung. They seem to even be leaving their tech support in the dark about this.

it almost sounds automated and scripted

I think they are limited to what they can say. Almost like samsung is censoring them.

That sounds like you were talking to software to me. Hopefully this is not true, and was in fact a chat with a real person who understood the difference between sim unlock and bootloader unlock, but you can never be too sure these days. Time will tell, and I sincerely hope there is something to this.
Next time you "talk" to them ask them what a locked vs. unlocked bootloader is up front, if they can't tell you the difference between those two things, then they can't really offer you anything as a resolution. Everything else is "wasted breath" as it were.
i made it clear thst i was trying to unlock the bootloader. He was clear about it after i explained what i was trying to do.

I think in fact "Patrick" is a real person, based on the fact that he corrected his grammar half way thru the conversation...
But he still probably doesn't know what he's talking about. An unlock code doesn't seem likely, especially if sammy is trying to sell a developer edition handset, but I will definitely stay optomistic...
So has anyone bothered to go to the site and look yet lol?

Yeah I am guessing a automated response. If you go to that site then go to the Android portion. The front page displays links to the coming soon developer version galaxy s3.
I'm on the phone with them now, trying to confirm this information. I gave them the ID chat for reference. The representative I'm speaking with needs to get a supervisor.
I agree sounds like software. I have never thought the online support charts were legit.Just my opinion though.

That would really be something if they just slipped up and gave out the key. That would make for a real interesting weekend.

I have the call recorded. I used the Samsung Record feature on the call. Where do I access the recorded call?
i am not sure. Maybe.its.under the voice recording app? Its built into the phone. Or it could be in one of the "s" apps.

I'm 100% sure this is bull****. And if it's not, and they're charging for unlock codes, **** Samsung.

like i said. Not sure of how in the dark the tech support is. They seem uneducated. This could be another verizon software update rumor incident.

Hey,
I am posting on my note 5 from work. I just got an announcement to inform customers who call about samsung pay to inform them to check play store, if it is not available say to try android pay. And if a customer calls about a samsung pay problem give them the support number for Samsung pay, after checking for an Ota update.
If a customer calls angry about not having samsung pay I am supposed to apologize and direct you to the play store.
I will be uploading a picture of the announcement when I get home.

Is this okay to quote you and link to this thread? I'm thinking about making a blog post about this. I just didn't want to get you in trouble with your boss
Thanks so much for giving us access to this info!
What about this?
Yeah, but their website also continued to say that the non-fast wireless charger worked with the note5 and s6e+. I think their website is a bit slow, especially at tweaking a more nuanced detail.
It is coming, maybe? How did this solve anything? Lol
