[Q] What if the battery fails? - HTC One S

So let's say the battery fails a year and a half after having it. Say the battery stops working or it doesn't hold it's charge as well. Since it'll be out of the warranty period, what options are there?

Buy a new battery from ebay.

It's just that the HOS battery is built in... ie it is not replaceble... well it is but you're not supposed to do it yourself...

Since you asked "what options" and not "what cheap options", I'll chime in with the obvious: send it to HTC and get them to fit a new battery. Exactly what our fruit-loving friends have been doing for years; not that I know anyone who has ever replaced their Apple battery.

It's just important to me that I can actually get it replaced some how by myself. I live outside the US and it's going to be headache to send the device back to HTC to get it replaced. I really have NO clue about how these phones go with "non-user-removeable" batteries. So if buying one off eBay is an option I'd go for that.
Just wanted to know that that's an option.

I assume warranty will last 1 year, But warranty for battery and such should be for life ! considering its non removable. It cant be damaged by the user either

If you want a phone with a removable/replaceable battery, don't get the One S or an iPhone, I suppose that's the best solution. Besides, I've replaced iPhone batteries before, not really that bad.

Out of MANY cell phones I had, NOT 1 battery failed on me or have I noticed decreased performance, even after water damage. We get rid off most cellphones way before any modern battery will fail unless its defective.

2 years (as most ppl get 2year contract) is enought to loose performance of battery!
Perfectly seen on laptops, where even after 1 year w/o proper care you start loosing your "juice"

In the UK I believe the warranty is the term of the contract. So 2 years RTB in my case. That was the case withy Desire anyway. Not sure how that works if you buy one without a contract. Basic manufacturers guarantee I suppose?

On my old Desire when flashing roms I had to pull the battery out occasionally. How can we do it here in case of need??

you cant. its impossible, The battery is non removable how can you remove it ?

Hold power, vol up and vol down simultaneously will force a reboot.

Proper care here is the keyword. And hard to compare notebook batteries and phone batteries. Notebooks are a harsher environment all around than phones (with all the heat around they age faster).
Just do not deplete the battery completely ever and you will get quite some runtime out of them. And by that time I figure that the local stores and cellphone shops will be offering replacements, because sooner or later the HTC disassembly instructions will leak. I doubt that the phone is impossible to disassemble (i.e. glued together).

The battery is not easy to replace but not imposible. Is like apple product. Replace an iphone 4 battery is as easy as took away 3 screws.

Thanks, that's what I was trying to find out.

Warranty is 24 months in the UK, imagine it will be the same elsewhere (please correct me if I'm wrong). I bought my Desire HD sim free hence knowing this Just make sure you keep receipts to prove purchase. Unless the battery fails, I suspect my one S will be long gone before the battery dies or needs replacing anyway.

I'm guessing you'll get that warranty from a provider, not if you buy it online. NegriElectronics said 1 year warranty.

HTC Warranty statement says "Unless otherwise agreed by the Customer, this limited Warranty shall last for 24 months from the date of original purchase for mobile devices, and 12 months for accessories"
So European warranty should last 24 months

[Q] Sensation heating up - but not the battery!

A few days ago I noticed my Sensation (stock ROM, Anker battery) heating up whenever I use the phone (for browsing, SMS, games, etc).
It's the lower part of the phone, especially the front where the touch buttons are. Sometimes it gets very hot, though never sufficiently hot to feel like my hand is burning.
I've checked the battery manually and it is cold, so it's not the battery. The screen is normal temperature also.
Anyone else notice something similar? Anyone know of possible cause?
Yeap I have the same trouble... Mainly it's get hot after 15 20 min countinues use...
Any cure yet...or any suggestions plz

I really dont think it can be resolved with undervolting etc on any kernel, pretty sure its a hardware design flaw.. my first sensation died on charge over night as stock... I had reported it about getting hot while sitting in my pocket.. the wonderful HTC rep said uninstall all apps.. the day it died it was stock and had no installed apps.. prior to that, looking at the logcat seemed to be pretty uneventful... top command showed nothing unusual cpu wise since getting my new main board it got hot once... when i ran cf bench with mikes rev rom... apart from that its perfect.
unless.... the new dual core kernels are stopping a part of the cpu die getting hot due to both cores being implemented correctly... I could go back to stock and see but thats not fun

CPU + Radio + wifi + GPS = heat. The more you use the faster it heats up and hotter it gets. The CPU is in the front bottom.
The Anker has a bogus temp sensor, so the phone won't report battery temp correctly.
Sent from my Energy ROM Sensation.
Mine used to do this followed by rapid battery drain but ever since it went for a swim (and spent a week in a bowl of rice) it stays cool and battery life has increased tremendously!

Yes I have same problem with u last nite. But everything come back to normal after reboot
All of my devices have got pretty hot, this is the only one with dual core so i expected it.Nothing out of the ordinary really. Can your dual core computer run without its fan on the heatsink?!
Heat
I have the extact same problem, running Android Revolution 3.1.1. I currently have the Anker battery in but I will be changing back to the OEM tonight to do some stress test and check the temp.
I'll report back.

My quad core PC can, CPU temp increased by 6C to 42C when the fan died over the summer during a mini heatwave, which I thought was pretty impressive
Sensation is currently running at 43C having been charging and using wifi at max range.
haha imagine a first gen p4 running without a heatsink and fan, fried eggs anyone?
but on a more serious note they had to replace the main board on mine.... so even if this is is normal.. the phone should never fail due to this... and i know intel have had some issues with the architecture over the years and recalled some cpu's that melt... ya never know
Overheating
So I put my OEM battery back in my Sensation last night and I was still noticing the bottom of the screen get hot to the touch.
I checked the battery temp and it was 39.1c this felt hot in my hand and all I doing was browsing the web on 3G. I have emailed HTC support to see if this is normal but I have a feeling it maybe judging by all the posts on various forums about the sensation overheating.
I have also notice the same issue this morning whilst sending a long sms with not data connected the battery temp was reported 36.8c.
Should I be concerned about this?
Thanks
Nik
It is normal.
But every machine degrades coz of heat over a period of time.
Changing ROM can helps, I can feel the temperature difference.
Custom ROMs really helps, but you still get hot phone if you play your game over half an hour. I don't believe someone can play a game over 45 minutes, the battery could die by then.
Oh, dun let the battery completely die tough.
Thanks for the reply, it sets my mind at ease a bit.

Hi Guys
Well I got a reply from HTC this morning and it seems the phone shouldn't be getting this hot. They have asked me to send it to them for repairs.
Dear nNik xxxxxxx
Thank you for your email regarding your HTC Sensation.
we can arrange for your phone to be repaired. We provide this service for our customers through our Repair Centre in the UK. Please read the following instructions carefully.
We can arrange for UPS to collect your device from any address in the UK, Ireland or any other EU country, from Monday to Friday, 13:00 to 17:00 except weekends and public holidays.
The current time-scale for the repair is 10 working days from when it arrives at the HTC Repair Centre.
If the fault is found not to be covered by the warranty then the repair will be chargeable and a quotation for the full cost of the repair will be emailed to you. Should you choose not to go ahead with the quote; a £20 fee (approx) will be charged for the return of the device in an un-repaired state. This covers the shipping, evaluation, testing of the handset and VAT. If you choose not to pay the quotation then the device will be disposed of after 30 days.
Physical damage and Wear & Tear in the device is not covered under the warranty, and the repair centre may decide that the repair will be chargeable if damage is found.
If evidence of water damage or liquid ingress is discovered then the device will not be repaired. We can either return the phone to you un-repaired (at no charge to yourself) or we can dispose of it for you. It is un-economical to repair liquid damaged phones as the cost to you may be more then the cost of purchasing a brand new phone.
For more information on the Warranty please visit our website at this link: http://www.htc.com/www/support/warranty.html
Please backup your data prior to sending the device to us (if possible.) HTC are not responsible for any loss of data that occurs as a result of the repair.
If the phone has been unlocked please provide a copy of the email or letter from the mobile operator that confirms this. Failure to do this could result in the phone being returned to you locked once again to the network.
By proceeding with the repair you agree to the terms and conditions of the repair service. If you would like more information please follow this link: http://service.europe.htc.com/terms&conditions.pdf
If you would like the phone collected sooner then please call our helpline on 08458900079 (within UK) or on +44 (0)1279 206906 (outside UK) to arrange your booking.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxx
Sincerely,
Sid

Is AT&T out of their freaking mind?

My brother has a HOX, preordered from Radioshack and got his phone right before Apple went all Soup Nazi on HTC. He is not what I would call a power user. He does not root phones, load custom roms, or do much of anything other than use his phone. Today he told me that his battery is draining at an incredible rate. Down to 58% in less than 2 hours. He hasn't downloaded any apps or anything that would cause this problem. He called AT&T and their fix was sending him a new battery.....
Now, I might be a little on the slow side myself but I am pretty sure that it takes a very adventurous person to crack open this phone to replace the battery. I told him that he is getting the run around and that he should demand a replacement. He is past his 30 days but they should still do a warranty exchange. He said he will take it to an AT&T store when he gets the new battery and see what happens but I sure as heck would not trust some $8/hr lackey at a random at&t store ripping my phone apart. (no offense to those of you that work at an at&t store but if I don't feel like I could do it myself then I would want someone who is an expert doing it, not someone that is just collecting a check)
Am I the only one that thinks this is a terrible idea?

Considering that you have to take screws out and remove other components to GET to the battery, it's a horrible idea. I'll bet he gets a battery for a Vivid or some other phone.
They screwed up - someone at AT&T didn't realize you can't just swap the battery. They tried to offer me the same solution when I brought back the unit because of the battery drain issue, until I told them that you can't just swap the battery out.
Is your brother in an LTE area? Does he commute to work (subway) - or otherwise runs into issues where he loses signal for some time? That seems to be one of the biggest issues with the battery drain today - regaining lost LTE signal (after it being lost for a while).
Tell him to install Badass battery monitor. It will tell you what's draining the battery.

He lives in Houston, so yes he has LTE. No odd commute though, but the has had the phone for 2 months roughly and have good batter life up until two days ago. I don't think he has any issue with signal loss.

Lol clearly someone didn't realize that the battery isn't replaceable on a HOX.
Phone has a year warranty. I don't think the device support centers even have the HOX yet so to get his replacement he'll have to call 1-800-801-1101
They'll ship him out another one.

Every time I've called AT&T about the phone their android phone tech people (yeah sure they are), have always first told me to take the battery out of the phone. When I tell them I can't and its a one piece phone. Its as if they heard the word of God and their eyes were finally opened. It baffles how much some people just don't know. I've always been told by att to push volume up and power to reset the phone..

Do I have a faulty device?

This is my second s3... It's "updated" with baseband version I535VRLG1. I have not rooted because I don't want to risk ruining my chances of getting a new one if I have to...
Here are my current issues:
No Sim card error
Network Communication Issues (Connection will just drop randomly)
Keeps dropping 4g
Slow Speeds (4g as low as 1244 kbps down, 3g as low as 66 kbps down)
Slow GPS lock-on (Took 5-10 minutes at one point)
Some gaps between screen and bezel
If you can enumerate 6 things wrong with your phone then why are you asking us if it's defective?:laugh:
Get a new one man. None of that is normal as you imply by listing it all.

Maybe because I'm sick in the head, as well as a quality engineer who finds faults in anything...
I just feel like an a-hole because I made a big stink over my first one because of a loose home button... Now this new device has more issues than the first.
I also do NOT want a refurbished device. I want new.
As long as you're in the 2 weeks period you'll get a new one.
Also, as funny as this sounds, all these problems can happen if your sim card is faulty.
Mine is also an "updated" device with all those stickers. No problems here. Return it if you're having trouble

That is not 100% true.
I had a defective Rezound (badly overheating and killing the 2750 battery in 1/2 day) & it was almost new.
They wanted me to accept a refurb & until I threatened to just take it back for a refund they absolutely refused to give me a new one....

Hi,
I've already loosed my patience for LG. Today I've sent phone 4 time for warranty, including one software problem.
I'll just want to kill a phone completely so they send me a new one.
The question is, how to do it right? May i run stability tests since CPU will fry? Maybe you have other solutions? Killing memory chip?

Still i'm O3D owner since 07.2011 and we all know problems it have since release (GHOST CALLS). I'm really think about getting this thing killed and sending it to LG repair center for exchange to other phone. Not to mention that I received phone yesterday and today it was sent back to repair (LG technicians damaged volume rocker).
Any ideas how to make phone unusable and still have warranty?
Overclocking is out of questions since they check the update counter. Samsung ones are pretty obvious but LG is very good at hiding things.

Exactly. it's a standard protection practices, also common in PowerPC and x86 processors, which they trip at 80 to 100 Celsius - close to the boiling point of the water.

I already had a MB replaced month after purchase. I've was using CM7 then and internal memory just died, still I was able to go into recovery or flash a different rom.
Maybe I've stated it wrong, the phone need to be broken, so not exactly a MB or so. Maybe a charging output, mini-jack (just repaired 2 days ago), mic - whatever. It will be a 3 hardware repair, and then I'll be allowed to ask for new phone (Nexus maybe).

Easiest way is to pour water on it for 5-10 seconds turned on since there is electricity I dont know if it safe do it more I never tried it so im just guessing Then Just pull it out Dont dry it completly just wipe it little bit with towel and use it,dont turn it off. just use it phone parts should die if only screen dies then get to the motherboard and cut some cable lol. I dont know why Im helping you thats too brutal but it will work for sure
It may work, but who know if there's humidity sticker inside the phone, the water sensitive sticker's useless anyways. And the most likely worst scenario would be for the flash chip to erase itself.

I'm still waiting for the phone to back from service. Maybe i will just play with mini-jack again. Plugging headphones and moving jack inside should damage stick points, of course i'll make gentle moves. Or.... CM Flashlight set on maximum brightness can damage camera LED?
I just received answer form LG, any hardware repair is counted as significant one and will allow replacement of the phone (at least I'll be able to ask for that.

The issue seems to be limited to batteries with serial numbers beginning with "BD", easy enough for people to check if they're affected.
Also, I've seen no mention of a recall on the batteries? Do you have a link to this, OP?

A link to what, sorry?
All the information I posted is from the discussion threads on this forum. It's in there that it is only people who have the BD batteries having the issue. Any information I posted about what happens with the fault is from when my battery went through it .
Yeah mine's BD as well and it barely holds a day... Should I look for a replace?

Take a look at the battery, if it's swollen (even slightly so) that's a fairly good sign that it's having issues. As far as we know it's only BD batteries that are affected, but that doesn't mean that ALL BD batteries are.
There's other symptoms that come with the battery failing as well:
Generally bad battery life (much worse than previously used to)
Phone turning off randomly, and won't turn back on until a charger is connected
Battery level jumping from high (e.g. 80%) levels to very low (a few percent) when the phone cuts out
Noticacly swollen battery (this varies from only a mm or so of swelling, to enough to bend the screen and casing of the phone!
If you see any more of those issues, then it's probably worth contacting Samsung or the shop you purchased it from to get a replacement sent out to you.

Thanks for the info.
It doesn't seem to be swollen (my phone is maybe 3-4 weeks old now), but I can barely get 2 hours of screen time and I do have to recharge my phone every night (Wifi is on maybe 70% of the time).
For example right now I'm at 4% battery with 19h 16m 57s time on battery and 33% usage by screen (1h 29m), then 16% by Google Services.
in 8 hours from 95% to 0 , 1:30h display (medium brightness) + some data h+ surfing facebook , i don`t think its alright battery life is poorer than my old 1 year s3
android 4.3 MJ5 battery : BD
Even if the battery is ever so slightly swollen just get the battery changed. Wether it's free of cost by Samsung or by purchasing a new one.
I had the same issue.. BD battery.. It was swollen and my screen had started to appear slightly curved as well. Barely used to last 24 hours(2hrs screen on). Got a new battery and I love my s4 again - 38 hours standby 4 hrs screen on. Hate samsung though!
Damn. My battery has BD serial. No issues yet though (had the phone 2 months)
I'm expecting to have to change it soon...
Anyone got a link to the recall page?

There doesn't appear to be one.
Samsung have given no statement on this topic (as far as I've been able to find).

Relax guys.. Samsung will replace the battery free of charge. Here's the response I got from them yesterday -
Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Support.
I am sorry to hear you believe your battery falls under the faulty battery issue, I understand this is frustrating as it may limit the use of your device.
We are aware of this issue, which has affected a limited number of customers. We ask all customers to please visit their nearest Samsung Electronics authorised service centre, where they can receive a replacement battery free of charge. We remain committed to providing the best possible user experience for our customers.
As you are located in India, Unfortunately we would be unable to send you a replacement battery, as the replacement batteries are only being provided from the UK service centres. If you are able to perhaps send your device to the UK, perhaps to a friend or family member, They would be able to do apply for the replacement on your behalf.
“Please note that not all batteries are faulty, only batteries which display signs of swelling are eligible for a replacement. This is not dangerous, the only concern is that the back cover of your device may no longer fit.”
“Unfortunately if you have already purchased the battery, we would be unable to reimburse you, although you can still take your faulty battery to the service centre to receive a replacement.”
You can visit the link below to guide you to the nearest service centre that you can go to, with the proof of purchase, by just submitting your postcode, and choosing Mobile Phones from the drop down box:
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/location/supportServiceLocation.do?page=SERVICE.LOCATION
If the battery on your device is swelling, and you are unable to make it to the service centre, we would have to book the device in for an inspection.
If you would like us to book your device in for an inspection, please provide the information below so we can assess your warranty status:
1) Serial number (Found under battery)
2) IMEI number (Not required if a tablet) (Found under battery)
3) Your full postal address
4) Brief description of the issue.
5) Model Code
If the device is deemed as faulty, we will repair it and send your friend or family member back a replacement battery.
If there is anything else we can help with, please let us know.
Our Customer Support Team love feedback! Share your thoughts on this response by completing the survey at the bottom of this page.
Kind regards,
Kevin

I'm fighting with Samsung since last Monday.Story:
Monday:
1st call to Samsung support, they advised to call nearest service center. Service center called. Reply: we have no batteries for replacement, but we will be very happy to SELL you one. Second call to Samsung, reply with email that I shall scan the proof of purchase, note the ser no, imei no etc and send it to them. Done on Tue.
Wednesday:
silence, so I called them again. Customer rep said that he is ordering the battery to be sent to me.
Thursday: silence
Friday: email from Samsung that I shall go to the nearest service center. another call to Sammy, this time it took approx 20 minutes to recognize the real status. As they stated, the battery shall be with me within the max 10 working days since the last Wednesday, and email was sent by mistake.
Let's see how it will end....
In the meantime, my phone's screen is more and more pushed back by swollen battery. If it will not return to normal - Sammy will have to replace the screen...
EDIT:
Battery arrived today, looking at the envelope - from Netherlands (are all UK stocks already depleted???)
Front screen returned to normal, new battery serial is AA and instead of the english, it has all description on it in some funny language.
Hope it will have longer lifetime...

Dude I suggest you buy a new battery first and keep the one you get from Samsung later as a spare. This way, not only will you be able to use your phone properly sooner and prevent further damage to the screen and it must just be a lil dangerous with that swollen defective battery.. Who knows if it might suddenly explode or heat up or something *god forbid*

Even my battery(BD) was fantastic was for the first 3ish months. Then it wouldn't hold charge and became swollen causing the screen to get slightly curved too. Got a new battery and the screen went back to normal and the battery life is back to being awesome! Suggest you change yours too, ASAP.

Ironic but I've started noticing weird creaking noises when I hold the phone and the battery is now very slightly swollen on one side - if I place it flat, it's fine on one side and can "rock" on the other. I doubt it's noticeable enough for a Samsung Service Centre to replace it, but I'm going to try regardless before it ruins the phone
