Do I have a faulty device? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

This is my second s3... It's "updated" with baseband version I535VRLG1. I have not rooted because I don't want to risk ruining my chances of getting a new one if I have to...
Here are my current issues:
No Sim card error
Network Communication Issues (Connection will just drop randomly)
Keeps dropping 4g
Slow Speeds (4g as low as 1244 kbps down, 3g as low as 66 kbps down)
Slow GPS lock-on (Took 5-10 minutes at one point)
Some gaps between screen and bezel

If you can enumerate 6 things wrong with your phone then why are you asking us if it's defective?:laugh:
Get a new one man. None of that is normal as you imply by listing it all.

Maybe because I'm sick in the head, as well as a quality engineer who finds faults in anything...
I just feel like an a-hole because I made a big stink over my first one because of a loose home button... Now this new device has more issues than the first.
I also do NOT want a refurbished device. I want new.

As long as you're in the 2 weeks period you'll get a new one.
Also, as funny as this sounds, all these problems can happen if your sim card is faulty.

Mine is also an "updated" device with all those stickers. No problems here. Return it if you're having trouble

I got my phone on the 14th, but it's been less than 2 weeks since I got my replacement.... Does that count?
Maybe I should just try a new sim card first.

That is not 100% true.
I had a defective Rezound (badly overheating and killing the 2750 battery in 1/2 day) & it was almost new.
They wanted me to accept a refurb & until I threatened to just take it back for a refund they absolutely refused to give me a new one....

OT: but do they even have refurb S3's yet??

They might. It seems like there has been a lot of issues with this phone already...
I wonder if I should take it back to the store (different one than I already returned my first one at), or over the phone.

At that point, they gave in & sent me a new one in the box (I still have it)

Just called up, and they are sending me out a new ("certified") phone. Hoping this one fixes the issues, and is new....
All I did was list those exact issues up above, and he said well those are hardware issues and I'm going to have to send you a new one. I was ready for a big pain. Why can't the people in the stores be like this?

[Q] Should I buy a captivate from ebay knowing shutdown problem

Hi guys,
I just bought a captivate from a authorized ATT dealer, it is a refurbished and I have always been lucky with refurbished products so I did not think twice about getting it. However I won't have a warranty on it, so I am starting to reconsider, thinking that if I have one that randomly shutdown, I will be stuck with a faulty phone and will lose my money since apparently nothing really fixes the problem completely.
So, I have the option to return the phone within 7 days, should I just forget about this phone and just send it right when I get it and just pick another phone. If I had a year to try it, I would keep it, but 7 days... I just don't know what to do, any advice?
Did you already try using setCPU to up the minimum frequency to 200Mhz? Worked for me and many others!

No, I am supposed to receive the phone on Tuesday, but I am asking in advance because I only have 7 days to return it and for what I read on the board the problem might not show up right away. If there was a fix that unanimously worked I had no issue keeping the phone but it seems like a lot of fixes only work for a minority. Am I wrong and I missed the fix that is believed to work for most?
Why would you accept a faulty phone when you know for the same price, you could have gotten a phone w/o fault.
Refurbs are warranted for 90 days.

Confused on how changing the cpu frequency could prevent showdowns since the problem is faulty ram

I just recieved a refurb on warranty because my "New" Captivated had the dreaded shutdown issue. I tried SetCPU on it but to no avail. Funny thing is it didn't start happening until after the Froyo upgrade... darn closet gremlins. The refurb is an older build date than the one I purchased new and so far so good. I'd imagine that since it is a factory refurb it is up to par in specs since they recognized and addressed the shutdown issue. I wouldn't sweat it.
Well, it is a ebay purchase so the return policy is just what the seller is saying. So how would I get 90 days warranty?
Is it now sure it is a faulty ram? Would newer phone not have the problem then?
im not sure, you are going to have to look it up,
but the shut down issue only affects the older build numbers i believe.
i think... never had the issue so havent specifically read up on it.. just what i think i remember in reading though thousands of posts....
not sure what the build number was....
My build number and imei is in the range of the shutdown issue. It is a refurb from a insurance claim, so maybe that's why I don't have a shutdown problem.

Just my opinion!
I wouldn't even think or touching a refurb captivate from an ebay reseller unless the cost was so low that the risk was worth taking, for a couple of reasons.
I once bought a treo refurb on ebay. The first one would not receive phone calls so it had to go back. The second one worked fine initially, but the phone failed down the line several months later. I wound up using it as a pda and having another phone. Had no recourse because I got it cheap.
My Captivate, purchased from AT&T in August, developed the random shutdown problem. The first random shutdown was sometime in late November. Fortunately, since it was under AT&T Warranty, I got a replacement earlier this year that has been solid so far. But given the history of the Captivate, not only with random shutdowns, but GPS, etc., I wouldn't put any serious money into one without a warranty.
Edit: here's the info about imei numbers - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10037509&postcount=24
oh crap... i think this happened to me last night while i was on the phone....
rebooted straight to rom loading screen, no i896 or kernel boot screen...
is that how it behaves? or is that something new?

I have had refurbished products that worked great in the past, so this is not what really concerns me. But I guess overall people seem to be satisfied with the captivate that I was willing to give it a try, even with the gps problem. At first I thought it was on the first batch of captivates so I though I was fine, but I keep hearing people having a phone bought in Jan 2011 with the problem, so I am a bit anxious.
I paid $240. It is supposed to be manufactured refurbished, so I though it was a good deal considering even used captivates were going way over 300 on ebay. But maybe I just return it without opening it after all.
That too bad because the captivate is the phone that fitted most my needs with a decent price range.

I'm not sure. Did your phone come directly from Rodgers? Are they known to have the random shutdown issue? I guess you need to find that out first.
My first phone only shut down when it was on idle, never when I was using it, and only once when it was on the charger. As far as rebooting after the shutdown, it behaved differently on different occassions, but it didn't reboot spontaneously. I would pick it up to use it, and it would be off. I would have to long press the start button to reboot.

I'm guessing you don't plan to use the phone on AT&T, and maybe are not in USA? You might look into seeing if you would have warranty coverage directly from Samsung. In my life, $240 would be a bit much to pay if something goes wrong and you have no recourse. I paid around $200.00 directly from AT&T with 2 year commitment on my existing plan.
The random shutdown issue is well know to both AT&T and Samsung, and phones manufactured since about December seem to have good GPS as well as not have the random shutdown issue.

I am trying to figure out if I have some kind of warranty through Samsung. Also, if what you are saying is correct about phones made after Dec, I will wait to see when the phone was made to decide it's fate. Do you have an idea how I can know when the phone was made?
By the way, thanks for your inputs!
Well according to the samsung website, warranty is only for original purchaser. Now I have no idea how that works for att authorized dealer on ebay.

[Q] Has anyone gotten a refurb from atnt recently?

I mean by calling atnt and having them send you a replacement? I was wondering what model numbers they are shipping and if anyone is having any problems? Ive gotten about 4 replacements in the past 2 months from my local device service center and they all have developed random shutdowns. Ironically my first phone (1009) didnt have a problem but I exchanged it for the gps. And all the replacements had perfect gps but all developed random shutdowns (1008 batches).
I noticed the first random shutdowns on the first few phones would shutdown in my pocket and would turn on normally. My most recent phone is shutting down while charging and the battery needs to be removed. These all all refurbished phones...
So I dont know if I should go to my local store and hopefully they got a new batch or contact atnt via phone and have them ship me one.

I shouldn't thought twice because I know someone is gonna post about how the numbers dont matter. But I was just wondering. How is the phone doing? gps, shutting down etc? I just think my local store has a bad batch.
In october I took back original 1006 build with shutdown issue. Since it was radio shack and people around here dont know ****, they still had new ones so I exchanged it for a NIB. Another 1006 build, never a single problem with it.
Got a replacement two weeks ago for my Captivate that "disappeared" at airport security. Went through the call-in process and got a refurbished phone without sign of normal wear and tear. Build is 1010 and so far everything is perfect (including the GPS which had never worked on my previous 1008). I have it running on CM7 installed on the SD and I'm amazed how much better this unit is than the previous one. Makes me almost glad the previous one flew the coop.

How long does the transaction take to ship and get to you? I know they just send the phone without a battery cover and battery. They also send a box to send the old one back in? The service center is about 20 mins from me but I just dont risk another bad one.
I just got two replacements from ATT this week. One for me, one for wife. Both are build 1102. Both old ones were 1006 (need to mail those back soon). I noticed the three button combo works of stock froyo, but stopped working when I flashed stock eclair with Odin. I tried to flash GB on mine, same way I did with my 1006, soft brick. Had to buy a jig.
They wanted to give me free 5 day shipping, or charge for 2 day shipping. I explained I don't have a home phone, really need my cell to work and fast, they waived the fee. Called on Saturday night, arrived on Tuesday morning.

I've gotten 2 from AT&T since January, one for me and one for my girl. I've had zero problems. Both are 1007 models. I've flashed every ROM available on XDA.... multiple times... Smooth as can be. Sucks your having so many issues. This is a great phone. Very easy to work with. You would think it would be easy enough for them to make it all but new other then the cosmetic blemish here or there. I'm a big fan of putting up a stink if I don't get what was promised to me. If anything else goes wrong, I'd push for an upgrade... With the infuse out now, that would be a great way to go. I'm waiting to make any trouble till the SGS II comes out, then I'll figure out a way to get one for free
Just got one a week and a half ago. build 1010
If there's a ATT repair store in your town, you can get a replacement in about 15min.
I sent my 1008 in for exchange due to random shutdown, paid for 2nd day shipping, received 1010 no shut downs and gps is ok.

Thats what I've been doing. But about a week or two in every phone develops shutdowns. I should make a fuss and see if they will give me a new one out of the box.
So wait ya'll haven't paid the $ for a refurbished cap through arts warranty?!
I got my refurbished cappy about a month ago,its a 1007 build.Had some issues with stock kb1 and a lota random restarts on ff 3.0 but ever since the switch to continuum 4(basicly onix kernel) all my issues were gone and became a happy cappy user About the gps : doesnt matter what rom I was on the gps fix from plumbob did it for me,get locks even with 70mph and tue tracking works just fine(no complaints) just be sure to follow the instructions prior flashing the fix. Also for me here in Hungary kb1 modem works the best but jk4 performance is acceptable to,so I dont feel the urge to switch to GB yet since everything runs smoooooth.

phone is fine but no matter what ROM we put on there, her phone wont ring sometimes - which I dont understand how that is NOT a rom issue but its happened to all the rom's I installed since she got her refurb. Its random and a reboot usually fixes it for a while until it happens again. There are some other minor quirks that I can't remember too.
GPS is fine
no shutdown issues

I don't know. I don't have the $5 insurance. But every time I go get a refurb they offer it to me. But I never had to pay a dime when exchanging my phone at a service center and like someone said above it only takes about 10 mins.
Hmm, I'm using continuum now but I'm really not liking it. It has some issues like it lags on using the contact list. I've also had it randomly shut off. I was using fire fly before and it was fantastic, but I wanted to use netflix. Going to try out cyanogen.
Oh and I got a refurb 1007, which seems to have fixed my issues.

After 12 days issue surface

I have had the Sensation for 14 days and for the most part issue and trouble free. This morning I noticed it had rebooted on me. I thought oh well just a freak occurence. Than the volume went off completely and after checking all settings(they were all set correctly.) I did a hard reset and the volume seemed okay. A short time later the same volume issue surfaced again so I powered off and pulled the battery and rebooted. Once again all seemed okay. Then I noticed the lock screen did not want to unlock, after numerous attempts it finally did. This is starting to become the norm. Than the phone just went to the HTC screen (I guess it had rebooted itself again) and a reboot was just finishing up.The volume is now much lower than it ever has been(and it was too low to start with) . It seems as if the phone is just exhibiting issues by the hour. Has anyone else had this type of thing occur? I have just 5 days left in buyers remorse and this is my third one. The other two were just unusable, I must make a decision very shortly as to whether to ask for a replacement or just a refund. I really like this phone but am sort of shocked at how it went from no issues for almost 2 weeks to numerous issues almost overnight. Any input or help is certainly appreciated.

Can't give you any real answer. All we do here is collect anecdotes. But I saw something similar. My phone was perfect for 5 days. Then it was sitting on a table and rebooted spontaneously. After that it seemed fine. A day later when I tried to play a video, regardless of the app, all I got was a black screen. Reboot didn't fix it. Battery pull did fix it. Until the next day when it happened again. Formatted the SD and that "fixed" it until the next day when the phone just beeped once and died completely. As in door nail dead. No lights, nothing. Swapped the battery, plugged in the charger, nothing. So it's in the process of being replaced.
Whether those events are connected, or represent some pattern of accumulating problems and eventual death, who knows. Hearing reports like this is not reassuring, but we have no idea if the failure rate is 1 in 100, 1000 or 100,000.
Hi,

Thanks for the kind and informative reply. I am just totally flabbergasted at what has occurred with it the last 2 days. I have done factory resets - hard resets-battery pulls etc and weird and wild things continue to happen. I just had it go to the white HTC screen while using an app with no warning or notice( I believe it had rebooted again on its own.) The most puzzling is the volume going from its normal weak state to no volume to partial volume etc. Also in Manage Applications the majority of the time I go into change or delete an app it is not responsive and I have to go in 2 or 3 times for it to respond. Talked to a friend of mine at a T Mobile retailer a few moments ago and she said she had purchased a Sensation when they got their stock in and after 3 days got a refund. They were shipped 35 and had only sold 3 (hers included) and all three had been returned for a different phone. I am just amazed. I am at a BestBuy where I am playing with the EVo3D and it just seems smoother and faster and the volume even sounds louder. I wonder if another replacement of this phone will do any good, this is my third one and I thought this was solid.

Yes i removed the last 3 apps I had installed(2 were GPS related mileage tracking apps) and an HTC widge(quick recorder). Still wierd issues and touch screen is now becoming erratic. It just changed ring tones on its own!! Went into music app and when I hit play it just spins and does nothing.
Just called CS rentention dept and they are sending out a replacement phone but did say that random reboots and overheating and touchscreen issues have been acknowledged by HTC but not the volume issues. I hope that this will be a solid unit(and stay that way). I have read on other threads that the replacments(new ones) coming out now seem to be issue free( or at least only minor issues).

[Q] Stock GS3 dies while taking pictures

Ok here is my issue.
I had a VZ GS3, running the same software it had out of he box. ie I never rooted it or unlocked the bootloader(I was waiting for a stable JB/Touchwiz).
Anyway, I had the phone for about 3wks. Didn't run into any issues seemed to be working fine. One morning I was sitting around playing with the camera taking pictures of my girlfriend play with her dog.
In the middle of taking pictures the phone just died. At the the time the battery was pretty low maybe 10-15%. At first I thought the battery was dead so I tried charging it but the charging LED never lit up. Pressing the home button did nothing(no battery graphic). I went and took a shower leaving it on the charger for another 30min still no change. I tried booting into ODIN mode, but still got nothing.
So I got dressed and went to VZ. The tech pulled the battery and tried one from a display unit, but we still got nothing . We tried booting into ODIN with this new battery & still nothing. The tech said he had never seen anything like that happen before so they would return my phone on warranty (I don't have insurance).
Of course they send me a refurb and it works fine but I can't help but feel a little cheated, I bought a new $250 phone and through no fault of my own I have to live with this refurb. Also, this has made me a little wary of rooting my phone since if it hard bricks I won't be able to restore it to factory before sending it back.
Anybody hear of anything like this happening with other GS3's
What's wrong with a refurb? How do you feel cheated? You returned your non working phone for a phone that does work and passed another round of QC. I don't see the problem here.

I feel cheated because using electronics puts on wear. The processor, the OLEDs, every piece of silicon in the phone is subject to degradation based on the amount of use, heat, liquid and impact its exposed to. By definition, the refurb is a phone that had some issue and was repaired.
I don't know what the phone has been exposed to prior to me receiving it. For all I know they re-flashed someones highly used phone stuck it in a new case/bezel and sent it to me. Any additional wear may down the road effect the performance of my phone. Its the same reason that the display unit at most stores is sold at a discount.
As to your talk of QC. They actually sent me 2 refurbs. The first one was put back together incorrectly & the battery door wouldn't close, so I had to return that one immediately after opening the box.

Even if you buy new or get new for a replacement, you're still subject to the same problems that could arise, as you've already experienced. As for your other points, the phone has been out for a few months. I think you need to relax a little bit if you have legitimate issues, verizon will give you another refurb as you've already had to do.
Just because it's new doesn't make it impervious, as again you've already seen.
This was replaced under warranty so you should, in my opinion, have gotten a brand new phone. It's not like it was replaced out of warranty by an insurance company. You paid for a new phone that was defective at the fault of Samsung. It was not your fault. I'd contact Verizon AND Samsung and complain. Rerburb is NOT new. I call refurbished items used because that's a better definition of what they are.
I agree with sololhj. Even though the phone works and went through further qc, it's still not new. I paid for a new phone, I want a new phone. On my last phone there were issues, so I had it replaced. I got sent a refurbished one and it just wasn't the same. Weird feeling, hard to explain lol.

Of course the same problems could arise, in fact I don't even blame Samsung for my phone bricking itself in the first. I probably just got a bad piece of silicon. The whole reason I started this thread is because now that this phone has been out for a month I thought I would have heard of this happening to someone else, but apparently it hasn't.
The point is, what if this phone belonged to a fellow XDA member who had a custom kernel running and had the cpu overclocked to 3GHZ, burning a whole in the phone? Then because of some other issue he reflashed the stock ROM, used the flash counter hack to return the phone to normal and returned it to Verizon.
Now that's my phone and all that wear & tear is on the chip potentially reducing its overall life. Aren't I entitled to a new unused piece of silicon, even if the probability of it having issues is the same as the refurb I received?

Yeah if you bought it in the last 14 days, verizon should give you a new one. Maybe I'm just not that paranoid about refurbished things as others.

Screen flash and Android Q

Has anyone had the screen flash and updated to dp2 and then it was gone? I'm on the April update and the phone just went nuts. Had to turn it off let it flash for like 10 min then it went away for now. Oops it just came back. Unusable
edit: After a night's rest it seems back to normal. What happened was I was minding my own business, reading some forums, news, etc. before bed. Swiped left and I saw a flash. Hmm.. interesting, right? Then all of a sudden the bottom of the screen started flashing and then the whole phone. And I mean multiple flashes / second and very bright. I even saw the light when I closed my eyes later it was that bright and steady. So I turned off AOD, no help. Rebooted, no help. Turned the phone off for a few minutes and it came right back on restart. Put the phone on my night table face down and watched the light show for a while illuminating the room from out the sides of the phone. Then it stopped. Woke up and it seems to be gone at least for a while. I'll call G for a replacement this morning but seriously! This device is simply flawed. Obviously April update did nothing corrective for this phone. I wonder what happened with the displays on these phones since the XL doesn't have this issue. I might just see if they'll comp me an XL upgrade even though it's really too large for my tastes. Anyway, that's my story for the day.
I'm curious, as asked above, if anyone with a similar situation has joined Q beta and the issue is resolved. It's hard to determine I get that due to the intermittent nature of the flaw but I would install DP2 if it indeed fixed it. TIA
I’ve got the exact same problem/question....

I installed Q and it did nothing. Still went buggy so I returned the device. Bought a new one which has been ok for about 4 days so far. I'm not holding out much hope since many have experienced the flashing a few days after the return window closes, I think it's 15 days. The only solution so far is to either get an XL with a different display or an iPhone XS for $1000. Google is not acknowledging the design flaw as of yet.

Just ordered this phone on a new contract, wondering if i've made a big mistake. This screen flashing saga seems quite widespread ?

It is widespread but not guaranteed to flash. My wife has one bought in November and not once did it flash. I'm on my 4th new one now. The problem now is that it doesn't happen right away so you're kind of behind the 8 ball. When it does happen it's usually after about 3 weeks at which point there is nothing you can do about it other than get a refurb replacement that someone else has sent back due to flashing. I really don't know what I would do if I had to pay full price. Just curious, what did you pay on a new contract? If this one starts flashing after my return window I'm trading it in or getting a refurb and selling it unopened. If I can get $500 I'd splurge for the extra 5 and get an XS. The 3XL is just too big for me as is the XR. I want something 5.8 or smaller. I mean it's a great device if it just didn't flash. The fact that it flashes in safe mode and through the entire reboot pretty much says this is not a software bug but hardware. Read it and weep... https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/119210591

£20 upfront cost for the phone then £26 a month on a 2 year contract. After reading multiple stories regarding the flashing issue, seems the majority of users are having problems after AOD is turned on. That link leads to depressing reading ?

Pretty much the current US prices, not bad. Yes, AOD caused it initially but as I said, my wife has had it on since day one and never a flash. Turning off AOD or perhaps never turning it on might help but that is really not the issue. Why can't you turn it on without a blinding flash searing your eyeballs? I like having it on, flip the phone over to disable it and not much extra battery use. I wish you luck on yours. As I said the phone is great, quick, good size, decent battery life and great camera. The google issue tracker is indeed depressing to read but those are the facts on the ground. I think at some point they will have to address the issue and perhaps we will get a great trade in for the Pixel 4. We shall see.
The pixel 3 xl is now on sale. Might be time to pull the trigger on it if you can. No flashing on that device. 200 off retail.

Pixel xl is too big for my liking, but thanks for the thought. Mine should be with me tomorrow, so i'll turn AOD on and see if it causes any issues, if does, it's going straight back and the contract cancelled, i have 30 days to do this. Or.........save causing me any headaches, send it straight back, cancel the contract and go for something else.... Galaxy S10e ??

I have Google Fi on one of my lines and they have a 1/2 price sale today only on all Pixel 3s. So I went over to Best Buy to check out the size of the 3XL and it's not horrible. A little too big for my preference but it doesn't flash and I won't have to return it. So I'm on the fence right about now. The price for the 3XL 64GB is $449 if you have Fi. That is a ridiculous price but alas, they're out of stock across the board so I'm back to hoping this doesn't start flashing. 30 day return window is amazing. I think you'll know by then.

Thanks. You talked me out of the xl lol. I got a return window of 4 weeks due to the problems I've been having. If it starts on day 29 I'm going to freak..
The screen flash issue was fixed in latest monthly security update (android P) so the change will probably be merged right now in android Q.

Yeah i read that the latest security update should have fixed the flashing problem, but still plenty of users reporting issues after the patch.

The screen flash issue was not fixed in the April update as noted above. Perhaps for some with minor display disturbances it was but for a large part of those with hardware defective devices it was not.

Nah it's ok. You just talked me off the ledge because seeing an XL for $449 was tempting. Then my wife asked, are you going to be happy with that large device? That was it. I removed it from my cart and they sold out shortly afterwards. Day 5 and no flashing yet.
Well guys, my Pixel 3 arrived this morning, and 5 updates later aswell as phone restarts, i was able to actually spend a bit of time navigating different features and finish setting it up. I decided to set it up from new instead of data transferring from my Sony. All good so far. Anybody got any advice on Pixel Pulse, apparently this replicates led notifications ?
Yeah, the XL is quite large. I like the size of blueline, fits in the hand comfortably. It is strange how this screen flash issue is going. Given the number of people reporting it vs the number of devices out there is seems like it might have been a bad batch of devices somewhere. I wonder what else could be causing it other than some devices with faulty hardware. Wonder if it would help if people with the issue started posting their serial number.
@decker39 I used to work at a Staffordshire University collaborative program here in China. Ten years working with that program.
This seems to be the later batch. My wife has and I had a Verizon original bought in November. I never had a flash and neither does she. I traded mine in because I couldn't use the esim on vzw. The Google new ones flashed. Let's see with the one I have now. I think it might flash but I'm trying to think positive. What would the serial number show?
