Android Carrier IQ spyware - Thunderbolt General

I haven't seen this posted here yet. I cannot find any evidence of this spyware on my Sense-based rom, but am wondering if it would be worthwhile flashing OMFGB until this all gets sorted out.

correct. VZW has officially said there's no CIQ on any of their phones. If you want to check for your own self-satisfaction, there's an app called Voodoo Simple CarrierIQ Detector. It's still a beta but is semi-reliable and shows no trace of CIQ on my thunderbolt.

If they were going to hide it, they would probably put it in the baseband (radio) firmware which I don't think anyone has checked. Of course, that is assuming the baseband hardware/software can even access the main CPU which is possible. After all, any firewire device can be used to gain full administrator/root access to a computer and even dump the entire ram contents by abusing DMA access.

Seems like he's just spewing nonsense. Keeps talking about undoing some hotspot and uncapped data hacks that no one has any clue what hes talking about. He keeps saying he'll post more info but doesn't, then says he'll explain later but doesn't. I think what he's talking about is AndIRC's April fools fake data hack, just scroll through his twitter feed, it makes absolutely no sense.

He's talking about the patch that was released to fix the wireless tether issue with the current Gingerbread version. If you just installed wireless tether without the hack then as soon as you tried to start a hotpot it would direct you to verizons page telling you to sign up for their tether package. This patch made it so wireless tether would work as it always has. For some reason he is telling whoever applied the patch to undo it. It has nothing to do with being rooted or having a custom rom installed.

Aside from that, he keeps talking about some uncapped lte hack that no one has ever heard of, he says supposedly people were getting 40mbps, though no one has ever heard of this hack before, " If you uncapped your Bolt, GET YOUR ASS BACK TO STOCK, NOW!!!" He told some guy that if he goes over 150GB data this month Verizon will come after him lol.

This has been known for a while .
I don't see this being a problem for very long especially on htc, considering that phones like the holiday will more then likely have international "brothers/sisters", that means there will be dev support worldwide working to break open a phones boot loader. I would assume the only reason it hasn't been done to the atrix, is because honestly the phone is a flop. Blur put a bad taste in everyones mouth and not alot of people want to mess with moto.
If you hit up other htc phone boards here on xda there are literally hundreds of developers working on htc phones. I have said it before where there is a will there is a way.
Atrix is no flop
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Locked bootloaders do much harm to the phones' sales. I like the sense rom but the default stock one comes with a lot of bloat and poor battery performance. I flashed the dilligaf's V2 rom and my phone now flies. When the manufacturers cannot unleash the full potential of the phone, why the hell do they have to lock their bootloaders for?

HAHAHA! That's funny sh*t.
Anyways... If the manufacturers and Phone companies would actually leave the phones open, we wouldn't have this issue.
It wouldn't be too hard for them to do...build a recovery image right into the phone. If something screws up, they is a keypress sequence that would force install factory firmware. Bam...No more brick, and start over. I know I have reference the PSP in several other posts, but they did it right. Maybe the phone manufacturers should take a hint.
There is a PSP dev that goes by Dark_Alex... He created the "Despertar del Cementerio." This translates to "Wake the Dead." This was a service battery and memory stick combo that would literally UNBRICK your PSP. I actually have one, and have purposely killed the power during a firmware update to test it. And it works! Anyways, the point is...this is VERY possible with these phones, no one has done it yet tho.

Verizon Doesnt Check For Root When Getting A Replacement Device

For all those who worry about a bricked device with rooting, fear no more.......

I received this link from my buddy who works internally for Verizon this morning, after i asked him about this two weeks ago as some rumors were floating around saying VZW would charge you full price if you rooted and needed a replacement
This is in no way a guaranty that you will not be charged, any time you root your device you void your warranty blah blah blah

VZW may not check, but HTC probably will. HTC may be "root friendly" but they don't want bad press about their products, either. If HTC finds evidence of root, there is nothing to stop them from reporting that to VZW, who will likely charge you full retail price for the reburbished phone they sent you as a replacement.

Doesn't matter, cause the refurb centers can't charge you as well as there is no path for them to turn around and tell VZW that a device was rooted, once the receiving warehouse verifies the meid and the 3 physical checks its sent off to the refurb center to be taken apart, I worked for Big red for 6 years, once it leaves the receiving warehouse it's gone, so even if they (refurb center) did it wouldnt matter

It still amazes me that people think businesses won't protect themselves from scammers. They may not make it a priority to catch every single one, but spot checks will happen. It would be a really horrible business practice to allow everyone to scam you out of your own product.
Link all the articles you want, but when they show their numbers for Quarter/Year, they'll take note on how much money was lost to "defective" merchandise. If that number is abnormally high...your ass will be grass when they start investigating the new returns.

1.4 million customers and of that 260,000 thunderbolts.....of that 25,000 to 50,000 rooted, and that's a liberal number it's probably less, I'm no math major but I doubt there will be any major impact on "defective" merch and Verizon has an internal sop with equipment and issues, if the "defective" device replacements hits a certain %, the device moves to "end of life" and they stop carrying it, it's that simple, they're not going to investigate anything

Just had to do a warranty claim the other night. (hardware issue) While on the phone and casually talking to the rep he asked why I didn't accept the newest update. Told them I have been ignoring it until I'm sure it wasn't going to add any major bugs to the already smooth running device. After some more chat I asked him what version their system showed I had, he said he didn't have that information, all he knew is that I had not accepted the update yet.
Hmm... I'll talk to my buddy
That works at the switch. Maybe he'll know. He's told me other stuff!

It could have something to do with the level of CSA you are dealing with? Perhaps the frontline does not have access to that, but as you complain your way up the ladder, more and more info becomes available to the techs.
They might have a way of getting a confirmation that we accepted the OTA update. Just like receiving text or email confirmations. If we accept the OTA, Verizon might get a confirmation with our meids that we downloaded

More like the wrong carrier. (not that VZW doesn't have some kind of other bull hidden away in there)
In any case I remember someone posting in here WAYYY back that when on the phone with a CSR they were able to see that he was running DAS BAMF. Likely was a load of crap but its possible they can see something similar to what you see in the software portion of the about phone section.
Sent from my HTC Thunderbolt
More likely that they see an OTA has been sitting on their server waiting for the device. Most CSR's know very very little about phone software, and especially how to resolve issues other than recommending battery pulls and factory data resets. Higher level techs are much more knowledgeable and probably more intuitive. I could probably work for a company like Verizon, but I see no joy in that business.
Yeah bottom line techs are retarded. Guy I talked to didn't even know what a bootloader was.... sad...
Now that's sad.
