[Q] Unlock Tether / Wifi Hotspot on Sprint

I don't want to pay $30/mo to use some of my 5 gigs of data on a PC. I get 'internet unavailable' when I use the built-in tethering or WiFi hotspot. I would rather not use PDANet if there is an easy way to get the built-in functionality working.

I was thinking the same thing but wasn't sure if that was just something sprint allows you to use free for the first 30 days or something. I vaguely remember having this "trial" when I first got my evo I believe. I'm past my 30 days so I'll try it when I get home.

mine worked right out the box, haven't passed my thirty days though so i don't know

If you install one of netarchys kernels it will work regardless of what plan you pay for at sprint.

Where is the mobile hotspot that came with the phone? Ive never seen it lol
HAHA, I found it. Never even noticed. I dont get good enough service to tether anyway :/

Ahhhh, yes you're right. This is why its always worked for me. Think I've been on a net kernel since the evo.

Yes it works out of the box but wont let you tether over 4g. If you use wireless tether it works around this.

its def not a free trial google and or samsung forgot to block it. The same thing happend on the lg optimus s. they will figure it out sooner or later and block it. btw i work for sprint thats how i know

Oh. I thought everyone knew that. It was talked about alot the first week or so after the phone came out. I dont work at sprint..
Wasnt sure if he knew something he wasnt saying or whatever.

Settings--> Wireless & Networks ----> Tethering and Portable hotspot---> Check the box, and its free out of the box a deal Sprint signed with Google.

I'm no longer under contract, but I'll ride the unlimited data for the time being.

The question I have, though, is if using a non-AT&T radio could stop the ability to be throttled. Anyone care to chime in?

The throttling isn't done on the device, it's done on their end.
EDIT: ATT FTL if this is true.

After an extensive call with att, they said this will NOT be happening.

Yeah the same kind of service when I asked about tethering thru WiFi hotspot or usb,they said it was ok. You really think they have a clue? I've worked at ATT and Sprint,they only say the stuff they know,and the stuff they don't know,well...kinda a hush hush. I'll guarantee it will happen.

I don't discount your having worked for them and what you experienced, but if I have it in writing, it ain't happenin to me.

It's all a money grab.
Combine cellular data limits and AT&T's home DSL data limits along with Netflix (and every other provider) trying to force us into using streaming media and VoIP, and we get screwed.

The top 5% feel the pain it looks like. I suppose if you are using 10+ gigs a month I am not sure I feel for ya. Personally I have never gone over 5 but I also have internet service at Home.
Here come the "I pay for unlimited" posts.

If it doesn't affect me I don't care. I use maybe 3 gigs a month..
If it adversely affects me then It will give me reasons to look else where when I get to re-up again.
Anyone know if this is enough of a change to the plan you signed up for to allow canceling the account?

I am on the unlimited plan and got sent a letter threatening to drop me to a tiered plan if I do not stop tethering via usb. Can they do that?

I read on a post yesterday (can't find it now) that the expected threshold for throttling will be somewhere in the vicinity of 50gb a month. In my mind, reasonable.

Wifi Tethering Extra Cost?

Well, I would like to wifi tether my SGS4G but it's an extra $15/month. So I was wondering if I rooted my SGS4G, would wifi tethering be free?

yes just root stock and flash the tether fix thats floating around. you dont have to switch roms.

Yeah. Keep in mind that it will void your warranty though.

As long as T-Mobile doesn't detect it, you won't have to pay for it. A customer service rep actually told me that when I asked about it. My sister was using the wireless tethering for months without paying for a plan.
Keep in mind that this was a couple of months ago though. They might have gotten more strict about that.

wifi tethering is included on any android phone 2.2 or higher at no additional cost. (the one thing that i am going to miss about tmobile :*(

If you can tether now without a plan, you're fine.
Just stop once T-Mobile says, "Hey, you've been tethering! You can't do that without a plan!!!" Tell them that the customer rep you went to said you could.
Like I said in my previous post, as long as they don't tell you that you need a plan, you can get away with free tethering. Just keep in mind this information is a few months old.

I believe you can tether with Tmobile, you'll just hit your bandwidth cap a lot sooner and your speed will be throttled down to 2G speeds after you hit your limit.

[Q] How to tether?

Has anyone been able to do this? I tried about 10 apps cant get any of them to work. Can get usb tether to work but not wifi( would like to use for ipad). I also rooted but still not working. Thanks

Download Titanium Backup and install. Go to "Backup/Restore" scroll down to Tethering Manager and tap to open. Chose freeze and reboot.

Yes it will they will notice your data usage and pop you for it mabye after a week mabye a month but they most likely will find out

So far, AT&T hasn't said anything. I have been using for the months with other phones. Including the Galaxy S II and now SGII Skyrocket

You will get a few warnings before....
I tethered on my iphone for about 5 months, then 3 months after stopping I started getting texts about "illegal tethering".
They wont cancel your contract, they will just change your plan to a 4GB/month + tethering plan if you continue to tether.

I haven't seen this posted here yet. I cannot find any evidence of this spyware on my Sense-based rom, but am wondering if it would be worthwhile flashing OMFGB until this all gets sorted out.

correct. VZW has officially said there's no CIQ on any of their phones. If you want to check for your own self-satisfaction, there's an app called Voodoo Simple CarrierIQ Detector. It's still a beta but is semi-reliable and shows no trace of CIQ on my thunderbolt.

If they were going to hide it, they would probably put it in the baseband (radio) firmware which I don't think anyone has checked. Of course, that is assuming the baseband hardware/software can even access the main CPU which is possible. After all, any firewire device can be used to gain full administrator/root access to a computer and even dump the entire ram contents by abusing DMA access.
