Problems with Marketplace? Try shorter Live ID password! - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have noticed that my 17 char password and my 22 char password worked on my Live ID on desktop but not on my WP7 Marketplace or my Winmo 6.5 Messenger! I suspected that some time ago and had a shorter one but yesterday I deliberately changed my Live ID pass into a 17 char and suddenly all kind of problems on WP7 happened. I could enter my pass, made sure it is correct (you actually see what you are typing for a pass) and try syncing - email works!. But there were Marketplace issues (I managed to install one game and then it stopped working) etc... It was asking for a pass, I would enter it, and it would say it was a wrong login or pass.
Just to make sure I hardreset my phone (HD2 with HD2O WP7) and guess what - I couldn't authorize on my Live ID nor activate phone! I opened a new Live ID and tried again - just to make sure it is not linked to my account or something. And the same thing happened - no go for a long password.
I tried "asdfgh" for a password on my desktop and changed it in WP7 - suddenly all is working again!
I finally changed a pass into 11 chars now and all is fine.
Now I tried it numerous times - and am sure I entered right passwords (I turned on "Show password"). I think the limit is 16 characters since I remember I couldn't type more in WinMo Live Messenger.
Edit: just to make it extra sure, I did it again just now. I opened my Live account settings on desktop and entered Marketplace on phone. I set a long password (20 chars). Long password didn't work on Marketplace, it was saying email or pass is wrong.
I changed it to shorter, and voila all is ok now! So I can easily reproduce it anytime. It isn't a feature - it is a bug!
So if you are having problems with authorizing to Marketplace and you have a long password, try shorten it.

POP3 email question

Hiya all,
I am a complete newbie to windows mobile devices. I Just received mt t-mobile mda touch, and am trying to set up one of my email accounts (yahoo.co.uk account)
I have tried setting it up with the auto tool, and manually putting all the details in, I know the are all correct, have tried about 8 times now!
Once its all set up, I click send/receive but it just goes back to tell me to check my username and password again. Another thing I noticed was that when I was checking all the settings, my starred out saved password appeared to have changed! (it seemed about 3 times as long as my actual password!)
Is there a way to fix this problem? I have tried to search the forum for this, and also everywhere else but can't seem to find a solution! I am search impaired!
I hope this makes sense to someone, its driving me a little mad!
Kara
Right, well ive managed to add my other main POP3 account which wasnt yahoo fine, My DP however has just got home and started to play with his new mda vario 3 (kaiser) Went to add email (same type of acc as my one that has worked) and hes now getting the prob I had with my yahoo one!!!
Any ideas?
Edited to add, ahh now hes sorted his out, something funky going on with the password!
My yahoo one still isnt working though.
Do u have a data plan that would allow you to access the web?
Yep, on t-mobile web n walk. Have browsed some web pages, and as i say, my main pop3 account is now downloading emails fine!

[Q] gmail keeps asking for password help!

Please help! A while ago, i was synchronizing my gmail when wp7 asked me to ipdate and reinput my password. But each time i type in the right password, it says that the password is incorrect! Tried deleteting the account on my phone and putting it back again, still the same. On the browser and also on the desktop, i can log on normally using the same password. Please help
That sounds really strange. I've never had any issues with my gmail accounts.
It sounds like a typo, but since you've tried it several times that may not be the case.
Are you sure you didn't mistype the email address instead of the password?
I know that with the software keyboard, I sometimes hit the key next to the one I want to hit. But I'm sure you already tried typing the password slowly and looking at each letter as you type it.
Yes i'm 100% sure i got them all correct. Tried changing and rechanging the password but still nothing. Also, i tried on my wife's iphone, and it worked perfectly. On the wp7, nothing
Is your Server listed as m.google.com?
Also, did you make sure to check "Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection?
Yes and yes, m.google.com and SSL is checked. Even tried turning my phone off but still nothing
Are you actually using a @gmail.com account, or a corporate account through Google?
i'm using a .gmail.com account. it was working before, but now, nada.
Sounds like a bug.
I heard of someone who experienced something similar. They were able to solve it by connecting to a WiFi network and then setting up their gmail account.
I'm not sure why that solved it for them, but maybe it could help you too.
And it just did. I was connected to 3G when it happened. Connected to my home wifi and it finally accepted my password. Again, i connected to 3G just to confirm it and well ut works now. Thanks for all the help guys. Will drop the wp7 guys an email about this
I just ran into the same issue.
I had changed my gmail password via web interface. then the phone asked for the new password but wouldn't accept it.
I ended up deleting the account on the phone, changing the password at gmail (again) to something different, then readded the account to the phone. In that time period though, I logged onto wifi in order to sync faster.
Would have been nice to have seen this thread earlier...
Gmail on Android persistence challenge credentials bug fix
I found this to be a bug with Gmail account log in failures on Andriod when using 2-step verification. It persistently challenges you for credentials although you have successfully logged into your Google account on another machine via a web browser.
This is the fix I found:
Step 1:
Log into your gmail account on another machine using a web browser.
Go to account settings > 2-step verification > authorising sites > application specific password
Step 2:
generate a password called gmail -android but do not click done.
Step 3:
go to device enter your gmail - andriod application specific password and you will get challenged a further 2-3 times enter the same password (you may have to also enter the CAPTCHA (a security image with distorted letters)).
Step 4:
When you are no longer challenged, try to sync with gmail if you do not get a sign-in error on your device then this has worked and be sure to click done in your your google account settings via your browser on the other machine you used.
Hope this helps to those of you who are suffering from this infuriating Google 2-step verification bug.

I had countless issues with my Gmail account on WM6.x - same as you describe. Would not accept my credentials.
The steps described above solved it for me (having to reset using that captcha thing) but it would keep on re-occuring. Not seen it so far in WP7 though. *touch wood*

[Q] email client lies

Hi
My Htc Pro 7 (one week old) seems to pretend that it is syncing. It only takes 2 to 3 seconds over Wifi but it doesn't bother downloading new messages.
My (only) email account on the phone is a Blueyonder account (powered by Google). The initial set up went off and collected the account info.
I have turned off SSL and deleted the port numbers from the SMTP and POP settings.
Reentering the username and password convinced it to download the rest of yesterdays emails but not the test one I just sent myself or the others that are on the server.
Outllok 2007 is set to leave copies on the server for 10 days and over the years WM and Symbian handsets have not experienced this problem.
Any suggestions?
Tnx
Since re-entering the username password- the phone is set to look every 15 minutes and ever hour or so it seems to go off- ask if there are any new messages and then download the odd one without bothering to do download the rest...
Am I really the only person who has a mailbox that is at least a day behind???
I guess I am going to have to reset the phone, and lose all my texts etc.
Nice one MuppetSoft!!! By removing our rights to tweak things you have also prevented us from fixing things ourself. Please stop trying to be Apple.
Sometimes the same thing would happen when I hard reset my phone and set up my Hotmail account for the first time. E-mails don't download even though I can clearly see them on my PC. After a couple hours though, it fixes itself and my e-mails appear regularly, and at times, I get alerts to my phone even faster than I would on my computer.
Maybe give it a jump start by using your phone to compose, send, deleted, etc. Otherwise if it still isn't working, then it may be bugged and a hard reset may be in your future.
Thanks for the reply prjkthack
I can send emails without any problems. I have only had the phone just over a week and I am pretty sure that on day one it was working properly. I only noticed the issue a couple of days after the Nodo update- not sure if there is a relation or not.
I guess I will have to wait until i have a day off work before i can prepare for a hard reset. Being undiciplined i tend to leave client contact details in the form of text messages, rather than saving them to contacts.
odder and odder....
it has finally managed to catch up and is now up to date.
I have not made any changes/restores.
Lets hope it stays that way.
Now all I need is my Dev account to be approved so that I can play with mango.
Just bumping my own thread.
The problem returned.
UNTIL I remembered that my Virgin (blueyonder) email account (powered by Google) needs to be in the following format recent:[email protected]
I am such a wanker and should have remembered sooner!!!!
I guess it is a timeout issue, ordinarily the email client asks the server if there are any messages- the server responds "sure about 10000", the email client says "sod that, I'm not cross referencing your list with the ones i am already aware of -I'm off".
With the addition of recent: it only asks for the emails received in the last week or two.
Hopefully the above will be of help to someone else in the near future

HTC Sense : my experience with HTC Support (or lack of)

Hi,
It all started about about 6 month ago, when i received my HTC Desire z (my 5th HTC branded phone).
I signed up on the all new HTCSense.com service. And it worked. At least for some time.
About 3 month later, i noticed i could not log in my HTCSense account anymore. Either from my phone or my laptop.
Here are the symptoms (on my laptop) :
On the login screen, i enter my email and password.
Then i click on Login
The Login button greys out and i have circle on the left to signify the site is "working".
I can wait up to 10 minutes, and the page doesnt change.
Sometimes after 20 or 25 minutes the website displays this error : "HTCSense.com is currently down for maintenance. We'll be back soon!"
I tried, and got the same result on Chrome, Firefox, IE9, and on 2 different computers
If i tried the "forgot your password", i got the same symptoms.
Out of curiosity, i tried to sign up a new account, with a new email, and guess what? it worked perfectly.
So i tried to type the wrong password on the sign up page, but logically, it warned my the password was wrong directly, so with this new account, i could not recreate the symptoms from the 1st account with this new account.
Therefore, i concluded it was a problem with my account and not password related.
So, 1 month later, i contacted HTC support Hotline, and they told me to wait a few days because their server were under maintenance and it would be back 2 days later.
So i waited .... 5 days... and it still didnt work. So i called again, and they kept telling me the same thing : "the server is under maintenance"
So i decided to use HTC Support online, and i explained my problem again and again by email.
But i always got the same answer : the server is under maintenance !!!
This was 2 months ago, and the server is still " under maintenance" ... But only for me.
So i decided to give up, and asked them to delete my HTC Sense account since i couldnt even login anymore.
Here is their answer to my request :
"Thank you for contacting us, Please try the following : In Sense.com website, after login in, go to Account > red link “Click here to delete your HTC Sense account” > input password"
There i think i could have grabbed a gun and kill myself, which obviously, i didnt
After i wrote them back, and made them understand i couldnt use this method to delete my account, they asked me to give them my login informations and PASSWORD.
Any sane web developper will know that if you need to ask the password of a customer to delete their account, there is something really wrong in their design. But well, i complied, and i sent them my password.
Now, here is their new answer : "our server is currently under maintenance so we cannot delete your account at this moment. We will do it as soon as the servers are back online".
Now i think will find some rope and hung myself
What else can i do?
you gave them your password? big no no.
call them up and don't get off the phone until it's resolved. go to a manager if you have to. it's pretty obvious that their scripted answer is of no use to you.. if they say "the server is under maintenance" again, tell them that's the answer you've received for weeks and that you will not get off the phone until it's fixed.
perhaps......
It all depends at what time you call. I have called in the afternoons/evenings and the support sucks. I have called in the morning time and I have gotten exceptional support from them. Better luck in the future, have an awesome day.
I'm new to HTC and tried to register for HTC Sense and never got the verification email. I logged a support request and have been asked for my username, password, secret question (and answer), phone make and model, phone number, IMEI and serial number!
Why they need all or even any of that information in order to delete or reset my account I have no idea but I responded by telling them politely to 'go whistle' and I am awaiting their next inspired suggestion.
I have worked in IT for over 20 years and you just don't go asking for this stuff if you are a legitimate support service. I'm distinctly unimpressed so far and looks like HTC Sense is one service I will be managing without.

htc = pia
I love my EVO 4g, but tolerate HTC. After about a year of owning it, I finally tried to set up an HTC.com account. I had been running AOSP ROMs for most of the time, and just decided to try Sense again. I got the same sort of "servers are down" messages. I tried alternate email account and user name...same results. Its not a big thing to me, I can get most any widget or wallpaper or whatever from a dozen other places. Sense is pretty, but it is a resource hog. I don't want the widgets, I want memory and storage space back.
Is this Application like Ipone have ones?
even if you get it working mate it ll just stop working after a while. ive had to remove and add the account to the phone a few times to make it sync again. as it stands just now I get no gps details or phonecall details the phone wont lock but I can see my messages at least.
Lol, almost a year later and the servers are still under maintenance....

Mango Windows Live 'Incorrect Password' Error

I updated my HTC Trophy 7 to windows phone 7.5 (Mango) today, and since then, my Windows Live account won't seem to sync. It gives me the an 'Attention Required' message below the name of my windows live account. After clicking, it says 'Your password is incorrect' and shows the incorrect number of ***** for my password... It reverts to 8 **** every time. After entering my correct password, it syncs for a while before going back to the 'Attention Required' message.
Every time I go to the facebook chat option in the text hub, I get a
"Incorrect Password
Make sure your password is correct. Tap settings to fix it.""
This doesn't fix it.
Any help?
I have the exact same problem. I've tried various online remedies from verifying alternate email addresses to changing my password and logging in again on my phone, etc.
Nothing has worked. It's not a complete dealbreaker here, but it's awfully obnoxious when I go to use the chat functions on my phone.
Anybody have any insight on this?
I am having this same issue now, but only with Windows Live ID. I didn't do a Zune update, but instead used an official Verizon ROM on my Trophy to upgrade to 7.5...
Basically a gloried factory reset. I can buy apps on XBL and on the Market... even though my live account is apparently not working right. ;
*edit*
Well, I logged into my live account and changed the password... and after plugging my new password into my phone: about 20 mins, the problem cleared up. Weirdness. ;
