What is so good about the thunderbolt. - Thunderbolt General

I wanna know what people love about the thunderbolt the phone doesn't do that many things a lot of apps don't work on it. Like netflix for one. I just wanna know what makes this phone so good and it can't be 4g because every new phones is harnessing the 4G speed.

Rooted has netflix
Next app that doesn't work please.

I came from a DINC, truth is I miss it. But there hasn't been a single app I can't run on my rooted bolt. And Verizon 4g is fast. I regularly see 25+ download speeds. The ONLY downside for me has been the battery life.
courtesy of my rooted bolt

Besides battery life, which can be fixed if you just quit constantly playing with the phone and a nice undervolted kernel, everything. Developer support is best among 4g phones out, build quality is great and the phone works great. I get great reception where most phones drop calls. All in all its bad ass. There will always be better phones on the horizon, but its pretty damn tight, all things considered. I've never run into app problems- check ur sources on that. Netflix only works on Ginger bread, so root and rom that ***** and all problems go away, including battery life problems.

You come here and say that netflix doesn't work on stock phones. You forget youre on xda? Very few people are still on froyo roms which don't run netflix. Which apps were you referring to that can't be run?

there's only a handful of phones on verizon that have 4G and if you like sense... then the thunderbolt is your only option.
now if a pure google 4G phone was on verizon.... i may switch depending on the manufacture.

It does my dishes.

Fast processor, plenty of RAM, big screen, Sense, decent battery life if you know what your doing (all 4g phones probably get crap battery life. My friends charge is about the same as my tbolt if not worse)
Who the cares about no netflix? Why would you want to watch movies and tv shows on a 4.3" screen and drain the hell out of your battery? Sure its probably nice to have if your bored, but is it that big of a deal? Besides, if we ever get GB we will get netflix and Skype. If we don't, root. Also, every app I've downloaded to this phone has worked. Sure there might be some bugs, but its a newer phone. Takes time to work kinks out on apps for newer devices.
It's a good phones.

Really tho this phone does run really smooth and has been great for me. I havent found an app yet that it won't run.

What I like about the TBolt is the speed , 4G , and more ram and memory than you will ever need.

I also love the fact that it is the only Verizon phone with dual antennas, thus allowing data + voice simultaneously. I just like rubbing it in AT&T fan-boys' faces..

Having come from an Incredible to the Thunderbolt, the pro's are:
- Dual antennas (data/talk simultaneously)
- Larger screen (great for everything - videos, web pages, reading)
- Kickstand (can be so useful)
- Front camera (video skype works well even over 3g)
- 4G (duh)

Personally I like it for the 4G which is a big deal to me, and may not be a big deal to other people. I move around a lot so having fast mobile uncapped internet is key, so I don't have to constantly be signing new land internet contracts.
It's unfortunate that marketers are abusing the term "4G", because they are spreading a lot of ignorance. The fact is that non-Verizon 4G networks are at best about a quarter of the speed Verizon's LTE network is. Straight up facts. "4G" is not a specification, or specific SLA, so you can call just about anything a 4G network. You could call a 3G network a 4G network. You'd probably get sued by the other carriers, but you would have solid defenses in court.
So, if you want fast mobile internet Verizon is just about the only option until AT&T's HSPA+ really starts growing in speed and deployment which will take a while.
There are 3 Verizon 4G LTE phones readily available during the unlimited data period, the TB, Charge and Revolution. TB got best reviews of the three and for good reasons, I believe. So, I love my TB and I'm glad it's the phone I got.

The thing I like most is the screen and general ergonomics. For such a large phone with such a large screen, it fits in my (somewhat small) hand very nicely. As a result, the large screen puts the web browsing experience on this phone miles ahead of anything else I have played with - I grab this over my iPad (iCoaster, really) for couch browsing every time.
The 8MP camera is the best low-light camera (without the flash) on a phone so far and the double flash is actually bright enough to make a difference indoors (and makes a great flashlight).
Then there is the speed. I swear this phone is faster than my netbook - nothing seems to bog it down. Need to run navigation, WiFi tether, weather radar and Pandora while talking to your mom? No problem for this phone. I also love that it has enough memory where I can leave games and apps open all day without the OS closing them. Coming from the Eris, the speed is the biggest perk I think, as the Eris would barely run Navigation and do anything else at the same time. If the comparisons between the Atrix are any indication of how the Bionic will stack up, the Thunderbolt will still be faster.
Other than the Evo 3D, which just looks awesome (and is on a lesser network), the TB is not only the best currently available smart phone, it will continue to be for at least the rest of the summer.

You actually can get netflix without rooting, theres a cracked app, (i think it still works) or root it and use the app.

[Q] I'm Indecisive: Thunderbolt or Incredible 2?

My Incredible is currently on its last leg...random reboots/shutdowns and I'm outside the warranty. I'm currently rooted, running CM7 and I love it (CM7 and my Inc). I don't flash roms everyday or even every week (really haven't changed since moving to CM) but I like having the flexibility to do so if I want. So the question is do I go with the Thunderbolt or the Incredible 2?
The 4G on the Thunderbolt would just be added feature to me...nothing I need. I looked at the Thunderbolt yesterday and it seemed bulky compared to my current Inc; before that I was set to buy the Thunderbolt. So now I'm struggling...do I get the Thunderbolt that has root or get the Inc2, which I like size wise but only has temp root (and hope full root comes along)?
Question: Rooted Thunderbolt or Temp Root (for now) Incredible 2?
Rooted/Unrooted shouldn't be an issue.. the Inc2 will have stable root for sure.
I am myself coming from the incredible.. (which too I loved).. but I don't regret going over to the TB. The TB looks damn good.. better than the incredible in my opinion.
The extra real estate comes in handy quite a bit when you are browsing or when you are typing.
4G is a HUGE factor for me. Now that I have 4G all around my area.. I can't imagine going back to 3G. Market updates on the go are a lot faster.. downloads are a lot faster and apps that depend on the internet are a lot snappier..... plus the fact that VZW is offering unlimited 4G for 29.99 sweetens the deal.. (not sure if that offer will last for long though).
The bulk factor of the TB that you are talking about..is something you'll get used to within a few days.. so it really is no biggie.. but of course it feels builky to you now because it is new... and you are still using your incredible... But trust me.. after a few days.. it'll feel right.
Thanks for the quick response. I really have been trying not to factor root into the equation. Are there stability issues with the TB? I've been reading the TB forums for a week, since I decided I needed a new phone, and it seems like there might be issues. I also asked some friends at Verizon what their thoughts were and they pretty much told me to steer clear of the TB for now due to buginess...has that been your experience? I don't expect to have some of the problems they mentioned since it most likely wouldn't stay stock for too long.

It depends on what you are running. The latest MR2 has been as stable as a ROM could be... battery life even with 4G is pretty decent... no random reboots.. 4G to 3G exchange is seamless.. and over all it is pretty stable.
Gingerbread on the other hand has memory issues, battery issues etc.. though over all it IS kinda stable with the newer radio..
I don't think the leaked GB RUU is as stable or efficient as the latest FRoyo.. and most of them out there are running GB mainly because of the sense 3.0 lockscreen and weather aspects that have been cooked into it (they ARE pretty cool).. but honestly for me.. the stock MR2 Froyo is rock solid and unbeatable.. and I can easily wait until a better GB RUU is dropped.
You have 2 weeks to try out a new phone anyways.. so get yourself a TB.. root it.. install the MR2 stock.. and see how you like it..
If you don't.. then return it back to stock and exchange your phone for something you'll like better.
Another thing that a lot of people don't really mention but has a huge impact on how you use your phone. 4g allows you to browse the internet, recieve emails, texts etc while youre talking on it. Kind of nice in some situations. I take full advantage of it.

Once you experience 4G .. you wouldn't wanna go back to 3G.. plus the fact that you are getting 4G for the same price from VZW (cheapest in the industry at the moment).. is too good a deal to pass over.
Also factor in the fact the verizon's LTE network.. is wayyy better than sprints WiMax's or AT&T (infact ATT even released a statement that their 4G is not as advanced as Verizon's).
I have the Tbolt and my son has the Inc2. Both have been kept stock (no rooting/roms/etc) and neither one of us have experienced any of the problems that others complain about in the forums, with one exception. Both of have occasional problems syncing multiple email accounts. We live in an area with excellent signal coverage so I don't think that is the issue.
I liked the (slightly) smaller size of the Inc2 better (coming from an Imagio) but have gotten used to the Tbolt. I now prefer the larger screen since it is a bit easier on my eyes. Both phone screens are clear and bright. The on-screen keyboard is easier (for my fat fingers) to use on the Tbolt since it is a bit larger.
The external buttons on the Inc2 are better. The ones on the Tbolt feel mushy but work ok.
Speed of the apps on both seems similar. There is, of course, a bigger memory card on the Tbolt.
Inc2 is global, Tbolt is not so if you travel out of country a lot that might be a consideration.
We live in a 4g area so we can compare network speeds. This is where the huge difference is. The Tbolt download speeds on 4g typically run at 20 to 35 mbps. The best the Inc2 (3g) gets is 2.5 mbps. We can download the same program at the same time, and I will be downloaded, installed, and playing long before my son is finished downloading. I didn't think I would care that much but the Tbolt is a real pleasure in that regard. Unfortunately battery life on the Tbolt is somewhat worse as a result. The Inc2 will consistently go the whole day without charging. The Tbolt seems to be much more random, sometimes getting through the day (16-18 hrs), sometimes half that even though my usage is fairly consistent from day to day. I've disabled/changed settings on all the usual suspects without much effect.
Call quality, bluetooth, speakerphone, and voice commands are very good on both phones. Cameras work well on both.
All things considered, I do not regret getting the Tbolt and probably would again, even though the battery life is not the best. The only thing my son would change about his Inc2 is the lack of 4g. Otherwise he loves it.
Thanks for the comparison...it sounds like the TB size is something I could get use to. I think I'm leaning back towards the TB at this point.

Captivate to Infuse?

Has anyone done the switch from the captivate? Is it worth it? I currently have mine with Continuum 2.6 and its running smooth but some games give me performance problems or it lags up at times. How much smoother is the Infuse? Really torn, I love my Captivate but I feel like its time to switch. I had the Atrix but didn't like it much.
Someone convince me to switch!

continuum 2.6? you didnt want to get gingerbread? well the captivate is like the perfect sized phone, the infuse can be a little awkward to hold with one hand. what i mean is that for my thumb to reach to the other side of the screen the phone just rests on my fingers, i cant grip it in my hand and operate it with my thumb. i havent dropped it that way yet but it is something to think about. it makes swype harder to use with one hand at a minimum. but after you use the big screen the captivate will look and feel tiny and you wont want to go back. as far as differences, well do you have any interest in hooking it to a tv? are you a heavy internet user? the bigger screen and hspa+ really help when browsing, i always ound text hard to read on the captivate, the older samoled screen has a funky subpixel layout and for me it affects readability alot. the infuse, i feel is much more readable. also the extra ram on the infuse will allow it to run a few things better. i switched and dont regret it, it really depends on what you like/want out of a phone.
I came from the Captivate with the Gingerbread version of Continuum installed. It was butter smooth... I haven't looked back since the upgrade and love the value the devs are already bringing to an amazing phone. Love my Infuse!! My wife now has my Cappy and loves it too. The Infuse is definitely a strong step up by Samsung IMO.

It's hardware is significantly better.
If this had a 4.3" screen it would be better. Things are a tad pixelated.
The software is equal.
If this had TW4 (the whole thing, not just a launcher or an apparently or two) it'd be a home run.
Right now it's more like a ground rule double.
The good thing is that software is always fixable. Spend five minutes in the Captivate forum and you'll see what some stubbornness can acheieve.

forgot to mention you can take pics and use gps and talk using speakerphone at the same time. try either one with the captivate, the camera and gps are disabled when a call is active! i know to many the camera while talking seems like an odd thing to try but ive been on the phone and wanted to text the person a pic of where i was and was disapointed that i counldnt use the camera. and the gps, well on a long road trip you are bound to get a phone call, just hope you are not anywhere near a turn because it takes the captivate a long time to find a lock again and the nav app to find your position and recheck the route in that situation.
I was going to ask the same question but search feature worked well it seems so I will bump this up. I am looking to upgrade to an infuse. And I was wondering more specifically about how the custom rom experience has been, obviously the captivate has been around longer and with the i9000 it has been able to get a lot of work done through that outlet. So has the infuse been getting a good group of rom chefs? I see mikeymike is here and I loved serendipity on the captivate so for me this is a good sign.

There are quite a few good rom chefs here, and there's also some kernel hacking activity going on.
Most of the rom chefs are on break right now - enjoying the summer while we wait for Gingerbread to drop in Canada. Once that happens they'll be busy again, so I fully support them saving their energy for then.
Some people are working on their kernel-fu now, as many of the kernel tweaks and discoveries (Such as, "oh THAT's the ADC I was looking for!") are more easily forward-portable to whatever kernel comes with GB than userland tweaks. If I can ever find an ADC that monitors the USB +5v rail expect a lot of battery charging tweaks. I know how to set the current, but there's severe limits on what I can do with the charge current unless I can monitor the input rail to make sure it isn't getting yanked down by overdraw. (Not all chargers are created equal. Without monitoring +5v input, a kernel that rocks when running off of a 2A iPad charger is going to do all sorts of weird crap on the stock charger, for example.)
That's great to hear, i assume this is a previously answered question but has there been talk of CM7 or MIUI coming over?
Let me give you a pro tip.
Nexus 3, quad or dualcore, by Christmas.

How is the GPS on the Infuse?
My wife and I have Captivates now and she is directionally challenged to say the least. We both got out Captivates in July of last year, but can upgrade now. I'm not interested in spending $200 for a new phone, I had my last phone for 4 years (HTC Wizard), but my wife is LITERALLY lost most places with out GPS, so a better GPS is a must.
I've just started looking at treads and seeing a "GPS Improvement" thread make me think that Samsung somehow is still screwing up a 20+ year old technology.
She is going to run stock ROM if that'll make a difference.
Thanks for any direction provided.

The CG2900 in the Infuse seems to be an improvement compared to previous hardware. We've got the same GPS chip as the SGS2.
I think Froyo came with early first-gen firmware for the 2900. It seems significantly improved with the Rogers Gingerbread kernel and userland libraries - the only fix people seem to need is occasionally clearing out the ephemeride preloads.
I question whether the "GPS Fix" was even doing anything other than placebo effect. For many people including myself it caused regressions.
Complete stock gps is flawless

I owned a Cappy (great phone), however I am officially in love with my Infuse
In addition to MikeyMike01 comment, I have to add:
- Battery is supposed to be better (lasts longer)
- Front face camera (1.3MP)
- Rear camera with LED flash (8MP)
- 1.2 Ghz processor (mine is OC to 1.6Ghz )
- Comes with Froyo, GB is supposed to be out within the next two weeks (rumors) but there are couple custom GB roms already
- HDMI TV Out support (through USB to HDMI dongle, comes with phone)
I do agree that the GPS is way better and screen is brighter and all looks sharper than on Captivate.
Although size is big and it still a slim phone, so you can fit it in your pocket without problems.
Besides the previously mentioned features they are the same in all other aspects. I once heard that the Infuse is a Captivate on steroids

The Thunderbolt and it's current state

Hello.
I currently have an X2 that I am moving away from. I do not want to upgrade my contact at this time, so I will be turning to 3rd party vendors to purchse a different phone.
The HTC Thunderbolt has my attention, however I recall this phone being plagued with problems since launch.
Now that we are 6 months removed, how has this phone faired? Have all the bugs/kinks been worked out?
My wife has an Incredible 2 and I always say I wish I had went with HTC over my Droid x2.
Please share your thoughts on the current state of the Thunderbolt!
It is awful. If you buy it you will probably cry your self to sleep every night.
But if you really want one you can bet the market will be flooded with them as soon as the trinity of phones is released (the Galaxy Nexus, the HTC Rezound, the Moto Droid Razor)
I know I will be returning mine to Best Buy since I future proofed it when I bought it from there.
Just my opinion though.

its not TERRIBLE..
but there are certainly better phones out there.
primary problem is the battery life.but if you are always near a charger, this is a non-issue.
i, for one, can't wait to get rid of my tbolt when the nexus is released.
Plagued with problems? The only problem I've ever have is the battery life but its to be expected with 4G LTE. Its a very solid phone all around
Being my city isn't mapped for 4G LTE till 2013, does this make a difference in terms of battery life, or does the phone still use the same juice with a 3g signal?

Will make a significant difference in battery life running 3g, uses far less juice running 3g.
I'm actually on the newest unrooted ruu, and there are honestly no problems. Phone rubs fast as ever, always get signal, battery life is even better.

I would suggest waiting until the beginning of November. 3 new phones are scheduled for the 10th & aroind that time people with Thunderbolts, Bionics, etc will try to get rid of them to move up & you'll be able to price haggle with them good.
Good advice - I will wait till then!
The TBOLT is not a bad phone at all, but I would wait and check some of the new ones coming out.
But honestly I do not understand why so many people down the tbolt, mine has been a super solid and great phone and I have no need or desire for anything else right now.
With extended battery, I have no issues at all. Fast, reliable and solid.

not to mention the Tbolt is indestructible(so long as the screen doesn't get hit). i got pissed one night while i was driving and threw it out the window. i stopped and went back to get it and it had some scratches on it but was still working perfectly.
although if it's anything like the HD2, don't let even the slightest drop of water anywhere near it.
The phone itself is a hell of a lot better than a good deal of what HTC has put out before. The software has been the only real problem and that's been almost completely worked out. I'm not sure there's any outstanding issues with functionality and reliability. An extra power-sucking core that's identical to the one in the Tbolt doesn't turn me on enough to be tempted to upgrade. I don't know anyone who's disappointed with it.
Personally I love my bolt and I'm not super worried about the uh "trinity" lol. The bionic was supposed to be this amazing phone but I saw one and frankly I would rather have my old bolt.
My name is Revos I'm a recovering flashaholic running Liquid Gingerbread 3.0
Ignore the Naysayers... It's a great phone. Rooted.. Mine is smooth as butter. Battery is not an issue of you plan right. I put my stock battery back in (with extended to fall back on). Lte is stinkin awesome. The screen (when not in direct sun) is perfectly acceptable.
Unrooted? Well, I can't tell you.. It's been too long. I rooted because I was tired of waiting for GB and the bloatware.

If I had an upgrade coming up I'd seriously consider the tbolt. 4g phone for $100 & a extended battery, sign me up. Seems that all the bugs are finally worked out & with GB finally close, it's a good deal.

It's an amazing phone for the price. I'm running a BAMF GB sense 3.0 ROM and I spend most of the day checking on the forums or messaging my girlfriend, although a lot is on WiFi. On BAMF Forever I pull 30 hours on extended battery. And that's not with anything disabled that I use. I won't handicap a feature just for battery life.
It's insanely durable hardware wise as someone mentioned. And the developer support for it is rest good. It's a very nice time to purchase the Thunderbolt as well as a lot of people are getting ready to sell to go to the new rezound, formerly called Vigor, because it was hyped early on as the Thunderbolt 2.

X2- just root it and customize to your liking. New to the Bolt, but only issue I have is battery life. But from all I hear, common issue with 4g devices. Got Verizon to throw in extended battery with purchase, just haven't installed yet, looking into "slim" extended battery.

First full day with Skyrocket

Well after using my new SR for a full day of work is can say it is better than my old Infuse but not by much. The Bluetooth is really crappie works when it wants to. On the way home in traffic stopped dead in tried to connect to XDA app and although I had 4 bars of signal it would not connect. Not even the browser??? After traveling a few miles I was able to open the XDA app and Internet. We don't have 4G LTE in southern CT. yet but this phone seems worse than my Infuse radio wise. I am running 2.3.5 stock rooted. I have been thinking about putting one of the custom roms here on it but they don't seem like they are really ready for prime time judging by the responses. I assume this is because we need better dumps or something. I know we have been waiting for an official dump from ATT for the Infuse which still has not surfaced and mainly why I got a SR.
I really like this phone even though it is stock it seems much more responsive and faster than the Infuse. I sure hope there is more development for this phone and we can get the issues fixed. Don't know why they cannot make a phone that just works right out of the box like my old BlackBerry, I know there is a heck of a lot more options on these phones and that is why I switched to Android but the basic features of the phone should work right out of the box then if I screw it up flashing fine but if it doesn't work to begin with that just blows. One more thing battery life SUCKS just like my Infuse have to carry two battery's with me everyday to get through the day which is really annoying.

Well after using my new SR for a full day of work is can say it is better than my old Infuse but not by much. The Bluetooth is really crappie works when it wants to. On the way home in traffic stopped dead in tried to connect to XDA app and although I had 4 bars of signal it would not connect. Not even the browser??? are you using it alot? i can easily get through the day with the big battery it has.. i was actually quite impressed with batt life.. and if youve only had it a day you have to cycle the batt a few times and youll get better life out of it... i havent really seen many issues with my so far..
Had my skyrocket for about 12 hours and I had a i9100 before so I've experienced both galaxys, skyrocket in my opinion is the superior device, not trying to start a debate just letting people know for what I use the phone for it suits me best to roll with this over regular s2
I've rooted my SR and "froze" a few bloatware apps. I only have wifi and 4G radio turned on (no bluetooth or GPS) the whole day and by the time I get home it's still giving me at least 75% battery life. Now if I play Fruit Ninja during lunch and check Facebook frequently, it drops a little bit. I do recharge overnight or else I'd be below 50% the next day.
I have tested the GSII and using the GSII SR now, and can say battery life is better in my case with the SR.

Sidekick 4g vs MyTouch 4g Slide

T mobile is offering me a choice between a Sidekick 4g and a myTouch 4g slide.... I've read the specs and seems the mytouch is higher end but want to know opinions from users who know whats what. like I said I've read the specs already so I am trying to look past the black and white.
I've not had the chance to use a mytouch 4G slide yet, but based on the specs, I'd say:
The Sidekick 4G has the best keyboard ever attached to a cell phone. Nothing else compares. It also has the cooler mechanism. The downside is a slow, buggy, outdated ROM with hardly any development.
The mytouch is definitely faster, plus has more memory. That'll come in handy if you're planning to do things like run emulators, play games, surf lots, etc.
So if your life revolves around texting, emailing, and other keyboard-centric tasks, the Sidekick is the way to go. But if you want something fast and more up to date, go with the mytouch.
I would go for the Mytouch 4g slide. The sidekick has too many bugs that seem like the wont ever get fixed.
The camera isn't that great either, and there is no flash.
The sidekick only has a nicer keyboard.
I would say play around with the phones they hve in the store and see which one is more user friendly to you.
I recently had to make the same decision; a key point for me was that the SK4G is spec'ed for HSPA+21, while the MT4G seems to be only spec'ed at HSPA+14. (I say "seems to be" because it's harder than it should be to find official info on the MT4G's specific speed rating on HSPA+; had to rely on some sleuthing and some third-party sources.) Even with that, it was close for me; it was a natural temptation for me to favor the HTC phone due to HTC's ROM availability. But I did go with the SK4G. Too early for me to say if I am happy with my decision.
go with the 4g slide
What kind of bugs are there on the sidekick 4g if you don't mind me asking? Mine seems to reboot very frequently whenever I'm gaming or using multiple applications and would vibrate a few times before rebooting completely.

Plenty of force closes with apps, like you said happens when you areusing multiple apps, along with random phone rebootings. Touch screen problems is the most annoyiong. (screen will randomly not respond at all or will lag around and press things its self).
Though these things have been happening a lot less since I started using the Back to the Basics rom.
