I just finally dumped Big Red and came over to AT&T (combined contracts with my wife). I'm going from the HTC Incredible and purchased the Sammy Captivate. I was very active back in the Dinc forum, and would consider myself "Advanced" - I did some development, but wasn't yet at the level of ROM Cooking.
I got over here to the Captivate - I'm confused as hell. I've followed my own advice and read forum after forum after forum before posting anything - the Cappy just seems like Greek to me.
Here's what I'm picking up:
1. GPS is spotty, but not for everyone. Mine has always been dead on, but then again I'm not a first-adopter of the Galaxy S. Perhaps it was a batch issue?
2. ROMs seem significantly harder to cook for the Cappy. I see a bunch of leaks from the Froyo build, but it looks half-done at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm running Cognition and I love it for day to day use. I had read a bit online about the lag issues, but I didn't imagine they would be *this* prominent even after rooting and removing bloatware.
That's about it, really. I'm checking back in the forums every day. I'm loving the hardware on this phone - the screen is fantastic, and when the Cappy is fast it's FAST. But I've gotta admit I'm fairly dissapointed thus far with some of the User Experience pieces. The Samsung overlay has some nice attributes (the swiping in Contacts is great, for one), but there are other bits that are wholly frustrating about this phone (WHY would they make the buttons at the bottom time out before the screen, forcing you to touch the screen to get the buttons lit up again??).
OH! And why did they switch "Home" and "Menu"??? I realize Samsung is a global company and that not all of their products are released Stateside, but it's still annoying.
I must apologize, this has turned from a general "how do you do" to a vent-fest. I'd love to hear from any experienced and new users alike. Thanks!
hi I just came from HTC too, I had the Aira, but I broke it. When I went to the ATT store, I saw the Captivate and decided to try it. I'm with you -- the hardware specs are great, screen is beautiful, camera is better than aria, etc. But the programming is lame, especially compared to aria. I haven't had an issue with the GPS, but there are a tons of software issues on this phone, such as wifi just not working at times, the exchange email client almost unusable, lack of languages, lag, and those lights at the bottom like you mentioned. HTC sense is wonderful.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out all of the ROMS and etc out there. I did install one of the lag fixes and it's made quite a difference. I also installed the HPUSA thing but I don't know how to tell if it's actually working. Anyway, install the lag fix, it will definitely help. And if anyone knows of a fix for the wifi, I'd love to know what it is (One would expect that it would just work out of the box).
What WiFi issues are you having? I can't even "see" any WPA networks. I have a Verizon FiOS router and can't see it because I'm assuming the WPA security. I tried switching to WEP though and still couldn't see it. I've search all over the web and XDA and can't seem to find anyone complaining of the same issue.

I haven't had any problems with Wifi and use WPA. I can see all of my networks (which are G, not N).
The button thing is kind of annoying, so I agree with you there. My GPS has been hit or miss, but I bought this phone used, so I'm not sure if it was a first batch model or not.
There's not much in the way of ROMs. There's stock and leaks, then there's Cognition and Eugene's, and that's about it. All of those are based on a leak or stock build, so they'll usually contain the same problems as the stock/leak build.
We're supposed to be getting a CyanogenMOD ROM sometime, or at least be able to port it...but I'm sure they can't do anything until Samsung releases the source for Froyo.
Anoter HTC convert here, but I came from the Pure.
GPS is definitely an issue. Mine improved with the OTA update to JH7. Its still not as accurate at highway speeds as the HTC.
HTC sense Rules compared to the UI in the Cappy. Im hoping that improvements will come as 2.2 is more widely adopted.

That has NOTHING to do with Samsung. At all.
Do a little research and you'll see almost every phone has a different arrangement of the four buttons.
Just going to answer the part of your question about the lag and lag fixes.
The lag on the galaxy s phones is the result of samsung using rfs file system - rfs has a much slower input/output read/write than ext* file systems generally found on linux distros. This is the lag that is being refereed to in the lag fixes.
so as long as samsung continues to put out official roms with rfs file system there will always be an opportunity for a "lag fix" with ext2 (i.e. ryanza's OCLF) or ext4 (i.e. voodoo).
hello_______
GPS is hit or miss, but on the FroYo leak it has gotten much better, unfortunately Samsung released the phones with brand new hardware and apparently didn't test...
The lag is as mentioned another Samsung fubar along the lines of using an inferior file system.
I think the reason for lack of ROMs is most people are waiting for FroYo to launch. We just got our first beta build leaked this week. Once source for the new kernel gets released, we should see a lot more activity as far as that goes.

I've done a lot of research, and I alluded to that point in my post. Survey the *American* market and empirically you will see that of the slate Android phones, most have the buttons in the order Home, Menu, Back, Search. And I would argue that it has everything to do with Samsung - unless you're implying that someone else designed the layout of the buttons on their device. After all, they are the reason the European variant of the i9000 has three buttons like the X10, correct?

Thanks, dayv. That's a good explanation and gives me some idea of where to go from here.
As for an update, turns out the WiFi issues were strictly hardware. After putting in a bridge with my FiOS router and still not getting any improvement, I took it back to Best Buy and swapped it out. Connected the second I got home. Unfortunately, the touch buttons were totally borked and I had to do a battery pull three times in 20 minutes because apparently the buttons would "touch themselves when they thought of me." In other words, you could see the buttons flash on and off, feel the haptic go crazy, and all kinds of strange stuff on the screen. Yet another swapout and I'm good to go.
I also installed Eugene's Frankin-Twiz last night - it really helped improve just about everything. Hardly any lag at all and I'm liking the associated themes available. GPS on my new device works great too.

I imagine we can also add to this that the Captivate has only been out for not quite 3 months if I recall correctly. So between the newness and people holding their breath for Froyo I could understand people's hesitancy to invest a lot of time and energy in making a soon to be outdated ROM.
came from a tilt2 which is/was? still trying to develop android..it was pretty good but wow i can never go back to windows phone after that mess. freggin love this captivate thou...when it doesnt break lol. ive never had a phone that i seem to get ALL the known issues with and still decide to stick with getting a new one instead. I miss sense somedays but overall i still am willing to stick with a less "bogged down" OS that i can practically do the same with. if i can make the phone do what i need faster then screw the pretty screen gadgets lol

I'm sorry but I to came from the htc aria, awesome little phone. I bought the aria because I thought the sense ui was pretty awesome. After using Cyanogen mods on the aria and playing with other launchers and now playing with tw launcher, sorry but sense ui is crap and for noobs . I got over the whole sense ui about a week of owning the aria and wasn't able to use it after adw and launcher pro.
Sorry had to post it. I just don't feel you can use an androids phone ui to bash another phone. I have only seen a few who use any androids phone stock ui any way and I'm one of them and as basic as it is it still makes sense ui look a babies toy.

Curious because I'm considering returning the captivate for the aria (other than the Screen the Captivate Really Kinda Sucks). If you had it to do again would you pick the Aria over the Captivate?

Not a chance lol the aria is awesome for its size but doesn't come close to the captivate , that's just my imo though. Only problem I have had with captivate is gps and I really don't use gps, so not that big of deal. The aria, like I said awesome for its size, just has to small of processor to do what the captivate can do. Most things lag on the aria games and movies almost un playable. I love my captivate.
I had bought an iphone4 for my wife to replace her old iphone. Well long story short , I turned a "i will not use anything else but iphone ! " the iphone 4 went back two weeks of having it cause of to many problems to we booth own captivates now and shes sold.

besides the gps.... i am very satisfied. here is why.....
I woke up this morning and opened allshare to stream music from my synology diskstation. Got in the car and loaded up bluetooth to my moto speakerphone/radio transmitter. Put my captivate in my proclipusa mount and Loaded up pandora to stream to my car stereo... Loaded up the navigation for testing purposes and was on my way...
Both worked without issue on the commute in.. rocking to guerrillla radio and limp bizkit. Got some tweets and emails... and the phone took it like... IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!!
My blackberry 9700 would have exploded and for sure the "r" key would have flew straight into my forehead... where then people would ask me why i have an R indented in my head... is it for Retard?
I rate the phone 95% out of 100%. If you really have that much to complain about then you will never be happy with any phone.....
p.s. - for people who have captivates that reboot or shutoff, that has to be a defect and you need to get it replaced. My phone has never rebooted or shutoff by itself.
p.s.s. Gps isn't great... but the phone does everything else i need really well.
rant over.

This has been a really stable rom with HSUPA enabled(no bluetooth issues) good GPS (for me) and a nice theme.
It is an international rom so all of the att crap is gone. No need for the sideloading crap.
I tried Cog beta 1,2, and 3 and F-T and I'm back to this rom. It's good for me until we get a good stable 2.2 rom.

That's an interesting question. The aria costs a lot less than the captivate. As far as hardware goes, the captivate is superior: 16 GB RAM, the screen is awesome, the speaker is better (ringtones sound nicer) and the quality of phone calls, at least for me, is a lot better than the aria. Oh and the camera is LOT better on the captivate. I haven't had issues with the GPS (the aria locked on a little faster, but captivate performs well). The issues with wireless for me are really frustrating, but others don't seem to have an issue (wireless sometimes works, sometimes doesn't even though it's connected, I have no idea why).
Based on my experience, I'd rather have the captivate. It definitely takes more tweaking than the aria but in the 1 week I've had it, I think I got everything worked out. I definitely liked the sense UI and email client on the aria, but I can live with the UI and stuff on the captivate considering how much better the hardware is.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix wireless, I'd really appreciate it.
Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we really don't have much of choice on at&t . To me we only have two choices right now Aria or captivate. If at&t got a htc equivalent to the captivate then I would have a hard choice .

Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.

Hey everyone...I am looking at trading in my G2x for a SGS4G. I am pretty fed up with my G2x dropping signal, rebooting, etc. This is my 3rd G2x.
Overall, how is this phone? I had a vibrant for a while, and the only thing that really drove me nuts was that it sync'd 'all contacts' instead of 'my contacts' from gmail. Is it still that way?
Anything else I should know? How is the GB leak? The GB leak for the G2x is horrible.
Thanks for any info you can shoot my way!

and yeah, I had it set up right...Google has 2 versions on the 'all contacts', one holds everything, including the people you send emails to (so, if you respond to a craigslist ad, then that email gets stored)...when I had my vibrant, it would sync to that, instead of to the 'my contacts' option. My friend has a captivate, and on stock, it does the same thing, however, he has a custom ROM on it, and it doesn't, so I will probably go custom as soon as I pick it up tonight.
Can you recommend a good stable custom ROM?

I have both currently. Stock for stock, I prefer my sgs4g. My G2x rebooted quite often, which I'd only notice after checking my "up time" in the afternoon. It also has a smaller battery than the sgs4g and much worse battery life. Removing bloatware helps some on the g2x, but helped tremendously on the sgs4g. What ultimately fixed many issues on the g2x was cm7 rc1. Now I'm sort of juggling between the two while I test different settings and setups. The g2x seems to get warm much easier though.
The G2x is overall much quicker and is a better feel, but the SGS is still a solid performer in every aspect. It has a great screen, great processor, and I'm glad they increased the battery size over the vibrant. I had a vibrant for awhile, the only thing the sgs4g doesn't have is the massive storage, but I haven't run low enough to notice so it doesn't seem that important anymore. most of your issues with the g2x are software glitches, so over time, you can fix them all. we had to wait a bit for the sgs4g to get support, but once it picked up, this phone became a beast.
for the battery, check out juice defender. we have drhonks kernals, which are pretty awesome, so we get better performance + better battery life.
when roms come out, im sure all bloat will be gone. most of us in this forum are bloat free, or at least we choose which programs we want.
overall, i think that the sgs4g is the better choice because of our current support in these forums.
Sgs4g. Notification ringtone cannot be the same as the incoming ringtone volume which makes me ehhh on it. Screen is gorgeous, but can sratch easily! Hunnmingbird processor is fast but in time will get laggy so prepare setcpu and cannot record video with front facing camera unless on gb leak. Battery life is worse than g2x so use juicedefender or balis kernel. And no led flash!!?!! Wtf man... overall I give a phone 3.5/5. That's the truth sorry guys..

good insight, but:
notifications can be the same as ringtones. you just need to move it into the right folder, so you should do some research on that.
you can get some great screen protectors, like ghost armor or zagg.
processor is a processor. can't really compete with a properly set up dual core, but it works pretty well, in my opinion. it works great on the sgs4g.
battery life on the g2x is worse because its dual core. more processors = more power required.
i thought you can record through the ffc on qik, but dont hold me to that.
led flash. you're right. they dropped the ball on that one.
i would give it more than a 3.5. more like a 4.5 (at least) with all the mods.

glad its not just me who thinks this phone is awesome.
I've had practically no problems with this phone.
Though if you're willing to sell that G2X I'd gladly do a trade/purchase for your phone...
The GS4G doesn't play well with AT&T
Anyways, it has Kernels, Gingerbread, a full Ext4 Filesystem, a 1.5GHZ Overclock, a couple of custom KD1 (Froyo) ROMs for you to play with, CWM, and well...the works
Anyways if you do end up selling your G2X please either PM me or post it here. Thanks!
It's up to you really... If you're into hacking and flashing ROM's and wanting the latest and greatest then the SGS4G probably isn't your phone since development probably won't pick up all that much since newer phone's are coming out. Have you taken a look at the Sensation 4G? Or you could even take a look at the myTouch 4G, it should be dirt cheap at Costco by now and it will definitely get very fast updates as it's supported by CM. Has 768mb's of RAM and GB is lightning fast on it.
But keep in mind that the SGS4G is a wonderful media phone if you're more into that. I think its speaker is the best out of any phone out there. And the fact that it plays divx videos out of the box is awesome, I love Sammy's codecs. And of course the SAMOLED is boss.
So IMHO if you want latest and greatest software and ROM's then I'd go with the Sensation, myTouch 4G or even stick with the G2x if it's problems ever get figured out.
But if you want a wonderful phone with the best hardware then the SGS4G is an awesome choice for you.
Hope that helps.
well I have nothing bad to say about this phone..as my first android it holds well...I remember my first rom flashing ...4 soft bricks huh .. baterry is fairly good with bali kernels ....roms are awesome ...my fav is trigger rom but I am sure others are as best as that is..gb on this phone is leak so yea it will have bugs ...but definitely it has wayy less bugs then g2x ... in matter or fact friend of myne has it but still he likes galaxy more .... its just your choice but I wouldn't trade my galaxy nomore .... for a while i wanted to trade it for nexus s but nah ..itaint that big of the competition ...good luck choosing

thanks everyone. I made the swap at costco last night. so far so good. The contact issue that I had with my Vibrant doesn't seem to affect this phone. So far I have rooted it and gotten rid of those stupid FOTA (is that right) files.
As far as battery, if I can get a day (6:30AM to 10:00 PM), then I will be happy. I could do that on my G2x most of the time, but I was at 30% by 5PM last night, so don't think it would have made it yesterday.
I find the LED flash on the camera worthless for taking pictures, so that isn't a big deal, however, I loved the LED for a flash light...so I will miss that.
LED notifications...I'll just use No LED app in the market.
I like to flash ROM's, but to be honest, right now, I just want something stable, and that doesn't loose signal. It would be nice if CM7 is released for this phone, but I won't be too disappointed if it's not.
Anyways, thanks again for all the info!
mm0
Be sure to install and test all of the modems to get the best signal for your area. I believe Bionix Frost comes with kb5 but my speedtest results were much better using kc1.
I've seen some of the modem threads...is there a naming convention for them? IE: a way to find out what the newest vs the oldest is? so far I am having decent signal with the stock modem.
CM7 is definitely coming out within the next week or two, from a developer named Krylon360.
And I know the battery sucks; you can flash the Bali 3.2UV kernel and it might help. Also, don't forget to calibrate the battery.
The Bali kernel also has an app called BackLightNotification, or BLN, which will flash the bottom four buttons if a message is received/etc.
You can flash either the KD1, KF1 or KF2 Modems. Honestly I haven't noticed that drastic of a difference, but I am in fact on KF2.
I searched and found a few older threads related to this, but i figured i would get a fresh crowd.
Chances are tomorrow Ill pick up an infuse, I currently have a captivate and will definately keep it (ICS is running great and i must say i love it)
I need opinions from people running the infuse now, hows the speed? anyone using the cm7 ports that can comment on the usability of it? From what i read the bluetooth is semi working in cm7 but the only thing i need it for is sixaxis controller for my snes emulation
also it seems that i see people overclocking this upwards of 1.6+, any feedback on battery when going that crazy?
in all honesty im too cheap to pay for a gsII or a skyrocket, the only reason im getting a new phone is that with my family plan i get a lot of upgrades and i feel that if i dont use them up im just wasting time
CM7 is always my choice of ROM to use for the infuse, battery life is great, everything works, besides the semi working bluetooth
IMHO If you need GPS routinely I'd pass on the Infuse. It works better on some ROMs but the GPS will more than likely be a diasappointment.
Other than that the Infuse is great...awesome form factor, and has some very nice ROMs that are updated regularly and looks like the DEV support will continue way into 2012.

i come from the captivate, the definition of gps issues. i felt like i needed a gps when i got my phone, now ive learned to live without it. Also i heard the infuse locks a bit better than the captivate, which would be an improvement for me,
I was debating between this and a nexus s. specs wise alone the infuse wins. The nexus is better in the fact that its pure google, but ill quickly flash the cm port and then who cares who "officially" supports my os
I came from a captivate. For me i have a lot of modem issues with the infuse. A lot more than i did with my captivate. I've tried cm7 and miui for the infuse and didn't like either one. My signal was in and out non stop. I tried resetting apn settings, flashing different modems and nothing worked. I just stay with the deodexed stock roms. KL2 is the best so far, for me at least.

Am I misinformed? Or isnt the HDMI only working with Froyo based roms? If your looking at CM7 or any Gingerbread roms out there for the infuse trust it wont have working HDMI, and bluetooth issues. At least that is the general impression I get. Please someone tell me if Im wrong. This is the very reason I get sad when flashing anything new on this phone. Always go back to Froyo in the end. Which really isnt all that bad. When rooted, this phone will do everything any other phone can and more. Its a great device, and you just cant beat the price---free on contract!
AND THE SCREEN IS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!! UNBEATABLE SCREEN--BESIDES MAYBE NEXUS PRIME AND GALAXY NOTE!!!

And auto brightness
E3D
I also came from the cappy, and from my experience, you won't be disappointed. The screen is f*cking beautiful. Just like I'm sure you love your cappy's screen, the infuse is bigger and doesn't have the annoying pentile sh*t. The camera is also an upgrade, not to mention having a flash. Pictures are beautiful with this phone. People are surprised that some of my pictures are taken with my phone because they're damn good.
Also, I've seen a huge improvement in GPS compared to the cappy. Some roms still have problems, but I get locks under 10 seconds on cm7. Another plus is you get slightly faster data if you're in an hspa+ area. As to people saying data drops in and out, I've only experienced this on a couple of roms, however, can usually be fixed with altered apn's; the cm7 thread has the settings in the first post.
Yeah, we don't have as much dev work as the cappy, but there are more than enough great roms to play with. Not to mention the CM7 build which I am currently using, as well as miui. We don't have ICS, yet. People are working on it, so I'm sure it will come eventually. Linuxbozo worked magic for porting gb roms over to our phone with hellraiser, so I'm sure something similar will eventually be worked out with ics.
As to the usability of cm7, I think only the audio side of Bluetooth is wonky, so your controller should be good, don't know for sure though.
Battery life is decent, I'm a pretty heavy user, lots of screen on time with texting and reading xda, fb, twitter, email, etc. and I still get a whole day usually. On my cappy with the same usage I was always recharging part way through the day.
Other than that, there's not much else. You don't need to overclock from my experience, the 1.2 GHz processor makes cm7 fly, I haven't seen any lag whatsoever; other roms are equally as snappy as well.
Hope I helped!

Thanks all for your comments, picked up my infuse tonight, rooted and flashed cm7, took a bit of working to get gtalk 1.3 running so that i can video chat, but its working now
only issue is that cm7 dosent recognize my internal sd like it should, so i have to keep the 2gb in just to take pictures and need to remember that /mnt/emmc/ is my new sd card location, no biggie ill get by

Any native infuse gingerbread roms should have working BT and hdmi. That's all the roms built on leaks; Catyrom, victoryrom, zeus, etc. check the superthread.

Glad its working out. I really like this phone. Lol, I thanked you on accident.
I'm running zeus rom at 1.6Ghz and got more than 4.5 hours display time yesterday, which is amazing. yeah the gtalk seems to need a hacked version. If you figure out how to run video chat over data I would very much appreciate to know which version you used, as I have yet to get that working.

Hey everybody I'm thinking about buying a Samsung Infuse. I have an HD2 that I've had since June 2010 and this phone is starting to die on me. A faulty hardware on this phone is causing me to think about buying an Infuse. Have you guys experienced any freezing or overheating issues while using the Infuse? How is the camera and video quality? Can you take widescreen pictures like the HD2?
see, i dont see a need for HDMI so i dont even think about it.
as for the auto brightness, i didnt know that it didnt work. lol.
still CM7 is really good rom.
There's really no reason to upgrade from the Captivate to the Infuse.
Sent from my SGH-I897
I hated my infuse until I put the Zeus rom on it. It locked up, turned off, and rebooted itself all the time. The battery drained quickly when it was idle while I was sleeping it would be dead within a few hours from a full charge.
However now that I put a rom on it I don't have any of those issues and actually like the phone now.
If you go with the Infuse, I highly recommend Zeus as the best custom ROM for the phone.

+1.
I bought my infuse for the display and the size.
How this has played out scenario:
I walk up to the girls.
I whip it out. I say "Check this out, baby!"
They're like, "Oh WOW. It's so big!"
I'm like, "Yeah. I know. Thank you."
They're like, "Can I touch it?"
I'm like, "Sure, Baby."
Another guy comes up and say, "Check out my smaller cappy with ICS."
They're like, "Yeah, yeah, whatever. We wanna play with Mr. Big"
Jk

Hey guys just got the infuse last night. Great phone so far coming from the HTC Aria! But a couple questions...
Will battery life improve over a couple of days?
And what's the best Rom/Kernal combo for you guys? Right now I'm on MIUI and its doing great but any personal favorites for you guys?
And what device would have closest hardware? I know the Aria and Wildfire are real close and easy to port. I would like to try some ports.
Thanks!

Battery life is dependent on your use.
Infuse based roms are victory, bionix, numas, caty and zeus. Try them all.
Plenty of Ports to try...check out the dev section. Check the superthread for links to everything

Expect a little less battery life from the Aria to the Infuse since it has a bigger and better screen it naturally uses a little more battery.

I still have my aria that my kids play with and the battery life on it is actually worse than my infuse. I even have a extended battery in it. It will probably depend on how you have your phone set up.

that aside... welcome to the INFUSE! everyone here is an A-HOLE... but youll learn to love us! lol
and uhh... dont be afraid to brick... its IMPOSSIBLE.. so never fear if you get stuck at the samsung logo or anything else... just use GTG's Unbrick & you'll be fine!
Battery life isn't the greatest, try fully charging it and then leave it charging for a couple hours after that for your first few times to help break it in, regardless it still won't be the best
To increase battery life, try keeping your brightness as low as possible and using a wallpaper that is mostly black. Not only do black backgrounds look sweet due to our samoled+ screens, it saves power as black pixels are completely off. Really, the only time i find myself cranking up the brightness is when I'm outdoors during the day, but that goes for any phone. Also, turn off auto brightness. Uses the cpu unnecessarily, and with most roms you can hold your finger on he notification bar then slide side to side to adjust brightness.
Other than that, welcome!
We're on the same boat Dustin. I recently purchased the infuse 4g due to shattering my atrix. Hopefully it'll get me through to next year when my upgrade is due. I'm also considering buying an extended battery since I've read mixed reviews about the infuse battery life.

I'm a pretty heavy user and I can get through a day.
Also, unless you're obsessed with getting ics pronto, the infuse will definitely still be a great phone for another year. Not top of the line, but its still great in my opinion. We have CM7 and a ton of other great roms, so I think you'll be pleased.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
Yeah coming from the Atrix has me spoiled for dual cores. However, the legendary Super Amoled Plus screen and the possibility of overclocking the 1.2ghz hummingbird keep my hopes up. I also plan on trying out the Miui rom, which I have not seen yet for the Atrix either.
I've personally tried Infused, Illuminance 2.1, and now CatyROM. I didn't think anything would top the speed/functionality of Illuminance, but CatyROM does. It also doesn't have that annoying no-sound-on-first-call (which you have to toggle the speakerphone once to fix) issue and Bluetooth works.
If you place great value on things like Bluetooth and HDMI-out you'll want to stick to AT&T-based Infuse ROMs... not ones that are Galaxy S-based and then ported over to the Infuse.
Don't forget to try different modems, too. They can improve your data network speeds and battery life. They can also ruin those things if the modem isn't a good fit for your specific device.
After switching from Illuminance (which uses the UCKK2 modem) to Caty (which uses UCKK4) I had problems with WiFi not connecting or taking forever... and I'd often lose the ability to send/receive SMS messages. After switching back to the UCKK2 modem everything's perfect again.
Good points, zsdersw.
Putting in my two cents worth in, I recommend the Mitra ROM with the icily modem. Modem has great battery life and the Roms responsiveness is one of the best. Scrolling from one screen to another is very touch sensitive, which I love. Lag is a drag, as we say around here.

You all probablythought I created a new modem. Should have read "uckl2" modem.

I downloaded the UCKL2 modem, too.. but haven't flashed it. Gonna stick with the UCKK2 modem, that I know my particular Infuse likes, until I get adventurous again
