[Q] how is this phone? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hey everyone...I am looking at trading in my G2x for a SGS4G. I am pretty fed up with my G2x dropping signal, rebooting, etc. This is my 3rd G2x.
Overall, how is this phone? I had a vibrant for a while, and the only thing that really drove me nuts was that it sync'd 'all contacts' instead of 'my contacts' from gmail. Is it still that way?
Anything else I should know? How is the GB leak? The GB leak for the G2x is horrible.
Thanks for any info you can shoot my way!

I love this phone. I have no complaints. for your contact problem, did you set it right in your phone book? because you can choose exactly who shows up in your contact lost.

thanks for the reply's...
and yeah, I had it set up right...Google has 2 versions on the 'all contacts', one holds everything, including the people you send emails to (so, if you respond to a craigslist ad, then that email gets stored)...when I had my vibrant, it would sync to that, instead of to the 'my contacts' option. My friend has a captivate, and on stock, it does the same thing, however, he has a custom ROM on it, and it doesn't, so I will probably go custom as soon as I pick it up tonight.
Can you recommend a good stable custom ROM?
thanks again!

I have both currently. Stock for stock, I prefer my sgs4g. My G2x rebooted quite often, which I'd only notice after checking my "up time" in the afternoon. It also has a smaller battery than the sgs4g and much worse battery life. Removing bloatware helps some on the g2x, but helped tremendously on the sgs4g. What ultimately fixed many issues on the g2x was cm7 rc1. Now I'm sort of juggling between the two while I test different settings and setups. The g2x seems to get warm much easier though.
The G2x is overall much quicker and is a better feel, but the SGS is still a solid performer in every aspect. It has a great screen, great processor, and I'm glad they increased the battery size over the vibrant. I had a vibrant for awhile, the only thing the sgs4g doesn't have is the massive storage, but I haven't run low enough to notice so it doesn't seem that important anymore. I hate the new silver battery cover, but I still have the old ones from my vibrant.

most of your issues with the g2x are software glitches, so over time, you can fix them all. we had to wait a bit for the sgs4g to get support, but once it picked up, this phone became a beast.
for the battery, check out juice defender. we have drhonks kernals, which are pretty awesome, so we get better performance + better battery life.
when roms come out, im sure all bloat will be gone. most of us in this forum are bloat free, or at least we choose which programs we want.
overall, i think that the sgs4g is the better choice because of our current support in these forums.

Sgs4g. Notification ringtone cannot be the same as the incoming ringtone volume which makes me ehhh on it. Screen is gorgeous, but can sratch easily! Hunnmingbird processor is fast but in time will get laggy so prepare setcpu and cannot record video with front facing camera unless on gb leak. Battery life is worse than g2x so use juicedefender or balis kernel. And no led flash!!?!! Wtf man... overall I give a phone 3.5/5. That's the truth sorry guys..

good insight, but:
notifications can be the same as ringtones. you just need to move it into the right folder, so you should do some research on that.
you can get some great screen protectors, like ghost armor or zagg.
processor is a processor. can't really compete with a properly set up dual core, but it works pretty well, in my opinion. it works great on the sgs4g.
battery life on the g2x is worse because its dual core. more processors = more power required.
i thought you can record through the ffc on qik, but dont hold me to that.
led flash. you're right. they dropped the ball on that one.
i would give it more than a 3.5. more like a 4.5 (at least) with all the mods.

glad its not just me who thinks this phone is awesome.

I've had practically no problems with this phone.
Though if you're willing to sell that G2X I'd gladly do a trade/purchase for your phone...
The GS4G doesn't play well with AT&T
Anyways, it has Kernels, Gingerbread, a full Ext4 Filesystem, a 1.5GHZ Overclock, a couple of custom KD1 (Froyo) ROMs for you to play with, CWM, and well...the works
Anyways if you do end up selling your G2X please either PM me or post it here. Thanks!

It's up to you really... If you're into hacking and flashing ROM's and wanting the latest and greatest then the SGS4G probably isn't your phone since development probably won't pick up all that much since newer phone's are coming out. Have you taken a look at the Sensation 4G? Or you could even take a look at the myTouch 4G, it should be dirt cheap at Costco by now and it will definitely get very fast updates as it's supported by CM. Has 768mb's of RAM and GB is lightning fast on it.
But keep in mind that the SGS4G is a wonderful media phone if you're more into that. I think its speaker is the best out of any phone out there. And the fact that it plays divx videos out of the box is awesome, I love Sammy's codecs. And of course the SAMOLED is boss.
So IMHO if you want latest and greatest software and ROM's then I'd go with the Sensation, myTouch 4G or even stick with the G2x if it's problems ever get figured out.
But if you want a wonderful phone with the best hardware then the SGS4G is an awesome choice for you.
Hope that helps.

well I have nothing bad to say about this phone..as my first android it holds well...I remember my first rom flashing ...4 soft bricks huh .. baterry is fairly good with bali kernels ....roms are awesome ...my fav is trigger rom but I am sure others are as best as that is..gb on this phone is leak so yea it will have bugs ...but definitely it has wayy less bugs then g2x ... in matter or fact friend of myne has it but still he likes galaxy more .... its just your choice but I wouldn't trade my galaxy nomore .... for a while i wanted to trade it for nexus s but nah ..itaint that big of the competition ...good luck choosing

thanks everyone. I made the swap at costco last night. so far so good. The contact issue that I had with my Vibrant doesn't seem to affect this phone. So far I have rooted it and gotten rid of those stupid FOTA (is that right) files.
As far as battery, if I can get a day (6:30AM to 10:00 PM), then I will be happy. I could do that on my G2x most of the time, but I was at 30% by 5PM last night, so don't think it would have made it yesterday.
I find the LED flash on the camera worthless for taking pictures, so that isn't a big deal, however, I loved the LED for a flash light...so I will miss that.
LED notifications...I'll just use No LED app in the market.
I like to flash ROM's, but to be honest, right now, I just want something stable, and that doesn't loose signal. It would be nice if CM7 is released for this phone, but I won't be too disappointed if it's not.
Anyways, thanks again for all the info!
mm0

Be sure to install and test all of the modems to get the best signal for your area. I believe Bionix Frost comes with kb5 but my speedtest results were much better using kc1.

I've seen some of the modem threads...is there a naming convention for them? IE: a way to find out what the newest vs the oldest is? so far I am having decent signal with the stock modem.

CM7 is definitely coming out within the next week or two, from a developer named Krylon360.
And I know the battery sucks; you can flash the Bali 3.2UV kernel and it might help. Also, don't forget to calibrate the battery.
The Bali kernel also has an app called BackLightNotification, or BLN, which will flash the bottom four buttons if a message is received/etc.
You can flash either the KD1, KF1 or KF2 Modems. Honestly I haven't noticed that drastic of a difference, but I am in fact on KF2.

Trying to decide which ROM to go with, hoping it fixes my issues

Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.

Samsung Captivate running Serendipity 5.12 Paragon6 1200-100hz (uv'd and slightly oc'd) and I9000XXJVE modem. Almost have it edited/themed up how I want it. Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.

Captivate to Infuse?

Has anyone done the switch from the captivate? Is it worth it? I currently have mine with Continuum 2.6 and its running smooth but some games give me performance problems or it lags up at times. How much smoother is the Infuse? Really torn, I love my Captivate but I feel like its time to switch. I had the Atrix but didn't like it much.
Someone convince me to switch!

continuum 2.6? you didnt want to get gingerbread? well the captivate is like the perfect sized phone, the infuse can be a little awkward to hold with one hand. what i mean is that for my thumb to reach to the other side of the screen the phone just rests on my fingers, i cant grip it in my hand and operate it with my thumb. i havent dropped it that way yet but it is something to think about. it makes swype harder to use with one hand at a minimum. but after you use the big screen the captivate will look and feel tiny and you wont want to go back. as far as differences, well do you have any interest in hooking it to a tv? are you a heavy internet user? the bigger screen and hspa+ really help when browsing, i always ound text hard to read on the captivate, the older samoled screen has a funky subpixel layout and for me it affects readability alot. the infuse, i feel is much more readable. also the extra ram on the infuse will allow it to run a few things better. i switched and dont regret it, it really depends on what you like/want out of a phone.
I came from the Captivate with the Gingerbread version of Continuum installed. It was butter smooth... I haven't looked back since the upgrade and love the value the devs are already bringing to an amazing phone. Love my Infuse!! My wife now has my Cappy and loves it too. The Infuse is definitely a strong step up by Samsung IMO.

It's hardware is significantly better.
If this had a 4.3" screen it would be better. Things are a tad pixelated.
The software is equal.
If this had TW4 (the whole thing, not just a launcher or an apparently or two) it'd be a home run.
Right now it's more like a ground rule double.
The good thing is that software is always fixable. Spend five minutes in the Captivate forum and you'll see what some stubbornness can acheieve.

forgot to mention you can take pics and use gps and talk using speakerphone at the same time. try either one with the captivate, the camera and gps are disabled when a call is active! i know to many the camera while talking seems like an odd thing to try but ive been on the phone and wanted to text the person a pic of where i was and was disapointed that i counldnt use the camera. and the gps, well on a long road trip you are bound to get a phone call, just hope you are not anywhere near a turn because it takes the captivate a long time to find a lock again and the nav app to find your position and recheck the route in that situation.
I was going to ask the same question but search feature worked well it seems so I will bump this up. I am looking to upgrade to an infuse. And I was wondering more specifically about how the custom rom experience has been, obviously the captivate has been around longer and with the i9000 it has been able to get a lot of work done through that outlet. So has the infuse been getting a good group of rom chefs? I see mikeymike is here and I loved serendipity on the captivate so for me this is a good sign.

There are quite a few good rom chefs here, and there's also some kernel hacking activity going on.
Most of the rom chefs are on break right now - enjoying the summer while we wait for Gingerbread to drop in Canada. Once that happens they'll be busy again, so I fully support them saving their energy for then.
Some people are working on their kernel-fu now, as many of the kernel tweaks and discoveries (Such as, "oh THAT's the ADC I was looking for!") are more easily forward-portable to whatever kernel comes with GB than userland tweaks. If I can ever find an ADC that monitors the USB +5v rail expect a lot of battery charging tweaks. I know how to set the current, but there's severe limits on what I can do with the charge current unless I can monitor the input rail to make sure it isn't getting yanked down by overdraw. (Not all chargers are created equal. Without monitoring +5v input, a kernel that rocks when running off of a 2A iPad charger is going to do all sorts of weird crap on the stock charger, for example.)
That's great to hear, i assume this is a previously answered question but has there been talk of CM7 or MIUI coming over?
Let me give you a pro tip.
Nexus 3, quad or dualcore, by Christmas.
Also, which games lag?

How is the GPS on the Infuse?
My wife and I have Captivates now and she is directionally challenged to say the least. We both got out Captivates in July of last year, but can upgrade now. I'm not interested in spending $200 for a new phone, I had my last phone for 4 years (HTC Wizard), but my wife is LITERALLY lost most places with out GPS, so a better GPS is a must.
I've just started looking at treads and seeing a "GPS Improvement" thread make me think that Samsung somehow is still screwing up a 20+ year old technology.
She is going to run stock ROM if that'll make a difference.
Thanks for any direction provided.

The CG2900 in the Infuse seems to be an improvement compared to previous hardware. We've got the same GPS chip as the SGS2.
I think Froyo came with early first-gen firmware for the 2900. It seems significantly improved with the Rogers Gingerbread kernel and userland libraries - the only fix people seem to need is occasionally clearing out the ephemeride preloads.
I question whether the "GPS Fix" was even doing anything other than placebo effect. For many people including myself it caused regressions.
Complete stock gps is flawless

In addition to MikeyMike01 comment, I have to add:
- Battery is supposed to be better (lasts longer)
- Front face camera (1.3MP)
- Rear camera with LED flash (8MP)
- 1.2 Ghz processor (mine is OC to 1.6Ghz )
- Comes with Froyo, GB is supposed to be out within the next two weeks (rumors) but there are couple custom GB roms already
- HDMI TV Out support (through USB to HDMI dongle, comes with phone)
I do agree that the GPS is way better and screen is brighter and all looks sharper than on Captivate.
Although size is big and it still a slim phone, so you can fit it in your pocket without problems.
Besides the previously mentioned features they are the same in all other aspects. I once heard that the Infuse is a Captivate on steroids

g2x experiences

Hey guys, i am currently interested in getting the g2x to dev on. I dev for the Moto defy since the day it came out and have plenty of roms. Now my question is how are you guys experience with this device? I've read some complaints of tons of reboot and back light leak, poor signal..etc.. Any comments would be much appreciated, looking forward to getting this phone
Very good device. Some have backlight bleed but only really noticeable in the dark and when looking at it on an angle.
I haven't had any reboots recently but once when i got a call and after hung up it just died and had to pull battery.
Main problem seems to be that Nvidia's lack of sources for A2DP functionality for stereo bluetooth and that 2.3.3 is on froyo kernel so further updates with custom roms would be difficult.
thanks for the reply, how are the roms? Any problems with current roms ?

In all honesty, CM7 works perfectly even with the lack of a2dp support. 2.3.3 OTA based roms (namely Weapon G2x) works just as well if you want that close to stock feel with more features. MIUI has all the same problems CM7 does since they run off the same kernel.
I've never had any issues with reboots, and if people do it's probably because of rogue apps running in the background. I never had a reboot because I like keeping my app drawer as minimal as possible At least, that is my theory
I love my g2x..just checked the sgs2 but not really into that much, my g2x on Cm7 was faster... The roms are good, I do agree with the lack of tegra support but Meh. Love it..please get one and welcome..
I love my phone.
Excellent performance, excellent display, and excellent battery life. I'm on my 3rd one, but that was because my first one kept locking up, and my 2nd replacement came damaged.
I love this phone, and I wouldn't want to replace it with anything else until the Nexus Prime. ^_^
Absolutely zero problems, love this phone so much. One of the best parts is the glass. It's curved, which makes unlocking it feel really good , and the glass feels really thick and solid. Also NO scratches, coming from an iphone all these things are huge. Loving it.
I feel like this phone can stay up to date with most of the devices coming out right now... On Android, you don't actually need 1GB of RAM... Heck, 512MB is more than enough! I'm gonna hold out until the quad core phones start coming in... If the Nexus Prime is still a dual core, I won't even bother.
I got 99 experiences but a reboot ain't one.
My 1st G2x is running good.
no reboots, no reception issues.
runs great and my app drawer always has at least 200 apps.
lol
I haven't started deving /theming on it yet.
Thanks everyone for you input! Just placed the order for it and cant wait to get. Never dev for any other devices besides moto , so im looking forward to this.
Awesome a new dev!!! Wanna thank you in advance. Good luck

Anyone get a problem where the phone wont find network after you go into a dead area like subway and you have to disable and re-enable all connections for it to work again?

Reboots
My wife and I both have our 3rd G2x (due to replacements of bad phones). The phones we have now are doing well, however we both did experience a random SHUTOFF not reboot. It only happened twice, so I'm just waiting to see if that happens again, really weird.
My G2x is is running great. On my second one due to random shut downs on my first. I only experienced a couple reboots until I got a brand new battery and rooted the phone. Currently running Eagles Blood 2.3.5 others no misshaps. Love it.

This is a great phone. For those of us that have had no problems, the intended impact of the device is evident.
However, you cannot ignore what a lot of people went through. for many, the g2x experience was the worst possible.
LG and T-Mobile appear to have let the phone fade away. Even though its for sale, and can be had for cheap, it no longer appears in comparison with other good phones on the market today. Check the reviews out their today...cnet, etc....The powers that be have let it fade away.
Even DEVs appear to have moved on. Many of the people here a few months ago have moved to other devices. Even saying that, there are some real good ROMs out there...just less people deving them.
In all honesty I have to say, this phone is the best phone I've owned. But in that same honesty, I'd have to say, you may want to consider something else. Even the Sensation is now getting far more press and exposure from T-Mobile than this beauty. There are TONs of ROMs available for the Sensation and some of the best DEVs from the android world are there.
I've recently considered the Bionic....but the VzW pricing plan is just too much. Minimum $100 a month to walk out with a Bionic.
I love the G2x. But if you want long term upgradabiity...you may wish to look elsewhere.
Just my opinion....

No. It just finds it. Maybe not on second one, but 10-20.
Also, I came to G2x from the Bold, which would die in a day with no usage under dead zones. That was a huge problem - I was forced to enable and disable airplane mode all around. The G2x is great in that matter.

I have noticed that a lot of problems happen under the stock ROM or roms based on the stock one.
Flashing something like CM7 or MIUI fixes a lot of problems.

Infuse owners, share your opinions

I searched and found a few older threads related to this, but i figured i would get a fresh crowd.
Chances are tomorrow Ill pick up an infuse, I currently have a captivate and will definately keep it (ICS is running great and i must say i love it)
I need opinions from people running the infuse now, hows the speed? anyone using the cm7 ports that can comment on the usability of it? From what i read the bluetooth is semi working in cm7 but the only thing i need it for is sixaxis controller for my snes emulation
also it seems that i see people overclocking this upwards of 1.6+, any feedback on battery when going that crazy?
in all honesty im too cheap to pay for a gsII or a skyrocket, the only reason im getting a new phone is that with my family plan i get a lot of upgrades and i feel that if i dont use them up im just wasting time
CM7 is always my choice of ROM to use for the infuse, battery life is great, everything works, besides the semi working bluetooth
IMHO If you need GPS routinely I'd pass on the Infuse. It works better on some ROMs but the GPS will more than likely be a diasappointment.
Other than that the Infuse is great...awesome form factor, and has some very nice ROMs that are updated regularly and looks like the DEV support will continue way into 2012.

i come from the captivate, the definition of gps issues. i felt like i needed a gps when i got my phone, now ive learned to live without it. Also i heard the infuse locks a bit better than the captivate, which would be an improvement for me,
I was debating between this and a nexus s. specs wise alone the infuse wins. The nexus is better in the fact that its pure google, but ill quickly flash the cm port and then who cares who "officially" supports my os
I came from a captivate. For me i have a lot of modem issues with the infuse. A lot more than i did with my captivate. I've tried cm7 and miui for the infuse and didn't like either one. My signal was in and out non stop. I tried resetting apn settings, flashing different modems and nothing worked. I just stay with the deodexed stock roms. KL2 is the best so far, for me at least.

Am I misinformed? Or isnt the HDMI only working with Froyo based roms? If your looking at CM7 or any Gingerbread roms out there for the infuse trust it wont have working HDMI, and bluetooth issues. At least that is the general impression I get. Please someone tell me if Im wrong. This is the very reason I get sad when flashing anything new on this phone. Always go back to Froyo in the end. Which really isnt all that bad. When rooted, this phone will do everything any other phone can and more. Its a great device, and you just cant beat the price---free on contract!
AND THE SCREEN IS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!! UNBEATABLE SCREEN--BESIDES MAYBE NEXUS PRIME AND GALAXY NOTE!!!

I also came from the cappy, and from my experience, you won't be disappointed. The screen is f*cking beautiful. Just like I'm sure you love your cappy's screen, the infuse is bigger and doesn't have the annoying pentile sh*t. The camera is also an upgrade, not to mention having a flash. Pictures are beautiful with this phone. People are surprised that some of my pictures are taken with my phone because they're damn good.
Also, I've seen a huge improvement in GPS compared to the cappy. Some roms still have problems, but I get locks under 10 seconds on cm7. Another plus is you get slightly faster data if you're in an hspa+ area. As to people saying data drops in and out, I've only experienced this on a couple of roms, however, can usually be fixed with altered apn's; the cm7 thread has the settings in the first post.
Yeah, we don't have as much dev work as the cappy, but there are more than enough great roms to play with. Not to mention the CM7 build which I am currently using, as well as miui. We don't have ICS, yet. People are working on it, so I'm sure it will come eventually. Linuxbozo worked magic for porting gb roms over to our phone with hellraiser, so I'm sure something similar will eventually be worked out with ics.
As to the usability of cm7, I think only the audio side of Bluetooth is wonky, so your controller should be good, don't know for sure though.
Battery life is decent, I'm a pretty heavy user, lots of screen on time with texting and reading xda, fb, twitter, email, etc. and I still get a whole day usually. On my cappy with the same usage I was always recharging part way through the day.
Other than that, there's not much else. You don't need to overclock from my experience, the 1.2 GHz processor makes cm7 fly, I haven't seen any lag whatsoever; other roms are equally as snappy as well.
Hope I helped!

Thanks all for your comments, picked up my infuse tonight, rooted and flashed cm7, took a bit of working to get gtalk 1.3 running so that i can video chat, but its working now
only issue is that cm7 dosent recognize my internal sd like it should, so i have to keep the 2gb in just to take pictures and need to remember that /mnt/emmc/ is my new sd card location, no biggie ill get by

Any native infuse gingerbread roms should have working BT and hdmi. That's all the roms built on leaks; Catyrom, victoryrom, zeus, etc. check the superthread.

Glad its working out. I really like this phone. Lol, I thanked you on accident.
I'm running zeus rom at 1.6Ghz and got more than 4.5 hours display time yesterday, which is amazing. yeah the gtalk seems to need a hacked version. If you figure out how to run video chat over data I would very much appreciate to know which version you used, as I have yet to get that working.

Hey everybody I'm thinking about buying a Samsung Infuse. I have an HD2 that I've had since June 2010 and this phone is starting to die on me. A faulty hardware on this phone is causing me to think about buying an Infuse. Have you guys experienced any freezing or overheating issues while using the Infuse? How is the camera and video quality? Can you take widescreen pictures like the HD2?
see, i dont see a need for HDMI so i dont even think about it.
as for the auto brightness, i didnt know that it didnt work. lol.
still CM7 is really good rom.
There's really no reason to upgrade from the Captivate to the Infuse.

I hated my infuse until I put the Zeus rom on it. It locked up, turned off, and rebooted itself all the time. The battery drained quickly when it was idle while I was sleeping it would be dead within a few hours from a full charge.
However now that I put a rom on it I don't have any of those issues and actually like the phone now.
If you go with the Infuse, I highly recommend Zeus as the best custom ROM for the phone.

+1.
I bought my infuse for the display and the size.
How this has played out scenario:
I walk up to the girls.
I whip it out. I say "Check this out, baby!"
They're like, "Oh WOW. It's so big!"
I'm like, "Yeah. I know. Thank you."
They're like, "Can I touch it?"
I'm like, "Sure, Baby."
Another guy comes up and say, "Check out my smaller cappy with ICS."
They're like, "Yeah, yeah, whatever. We wanna play with Mr. Big"
Jk

New to the infuse :D

Hey guys just got the infuse last night. Great phone so far coming from the HTC Aria! But a couple questions...
Will battery life improve over a couple of days?
And what's the best Rom/Kernal combo for you guys? Right now I'm on MIUI and its doing great but any personal favorites for you guys?
And what device would have closest hardware? I know the Aria and Wildfire are real close and easy to port. I would like to try some ports.
Thanks!

Battery life is dependent on your use.
Infuse based roms are victory, bionix, numas, caty and zeus. Try them all.
Plenty of Ports to try...check out the dev section. Check the superthread for links to everything

Expect a little less battery life from the Aria to the Infuse since it has a bigger and better screen it naturally uses a little more battery.

I still have my aria that my kids play with and the battery life on it is actually worse than my infuse. I even have a extended battery in it. It will probably depend on how you have your phone set up.

that aside... welcome to the INFUSE! everyone here is an A-HOLE... but youll learn to love us! lol
and uhh... dont be afraid to brick... its IMPOSSIBLE.. so never fear if you get stuck at the samsung logo or anything else... just use GTG's Unbrick & you'll be fine!
Battery life isn't the greatest, try fully charging it and then leave it charging for a couple hours after that for your first few times to help break it in, regardless it still won't be the best
To increase battery life, try keeping your brightness as low as possible and using a wallpaper that is mostly black. Not only do black backgrounds look sweet due to our samoled+ screens, it saves power as black pixels are completely off. Really, the only time i find myself cranking up the brightness is when I'm outdoors during the day, but that goes for any phone. Also, turn off auto brightness. Uses the cpu unnecessarily, and with most roms you can hold your finger on he notification bar then slide side to side to adjust brightness.
Other than that, welcome!
We're on the same boat Dustin. I recently purchased the infuse 4g due to shattering my atrix. Hopefully it'll get me through to next year when my upgrade is due. I'm also considering buying an extended battery since I've read mixed reviews about the infuse battery life.

I'm a pretty heavy user and I can get through a day.
Also, unless you're obsessed with getting ics pronto, the infuse will definitely still be a great phone for another year. Not top of the line, but its still great in my opinion. We have CM7 and a ton of other great roms, so I think you'll be pleased.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
Yeah coming from the Atrix has me spoiled for dual cores. However, the legendary Super Amoled Plus screen and the possibility of overclocking the 1.2ghz hummingbird keep my hopes up. I also plan on trying out the Miui rom, which I have not seen yet for the Atrix either.
I've personally tried Infused, Illuminance 2.1, and now CatyROM. I didn't think anything would top the speed/functionality of Illuminance, but CatyROM does. It also doesn't have that annoying no-sound-on-first-call (which you have to toggle the speakerphone once to fix) issue and Bluetooth works.
If you place great value on things like Bluetooth and HDMI-out you'll want to stick to AT&T-based Infuse ROMs... not ones that are Galaxy S-based and then ported over to the Infuse.
Don't forget to try different modems, too. They can improve your data network speeds and battery life. They can also ruin those things if the modem isn't a good fit for your specific device.
After switching from Illuminance (which uses the UCKK2 modem) to Caty (which uses UCKK4) I had problems with WiFi not connecting or taking forever... and I'd often lose the ability to send/receive SMS messages. After switching back to the UCKK2 modem everything's perfect again.
Good points, zsdersw.
Putting in my two cents worth in, I recommend the Mitra ROM with the icily modem. Modem has great battery life and the Roms responsiveness is one of the best. Scrolling from one screen to another is very touch sensitive, which I love. Lag is a drag, as we say around here.

You all probablythought I created a new modem. Should have read "uckl2" modem.

I downloaded the UCKL2 modem, too.. but haven't flashed it. Gonna stick with the UCKK2 modem, that I know my particular Infuse likes, until I get adventurous again
