Very in-depth review. 18min long! She seemed to like it a lot.
Shows video quality and HDMI out along with unboxing.
It got me pretty excited!

It took some hard convincing but I think I'm finally sold mainly due to late release of the Galaxy S2 since I will be needing the phone by August. So HTC here I come.
I can watch videos for this phone all day... thanks for finding one that's 18 minutes long!
*edit*
This was probably the best video review I've seen so far.
9 Mbps up and 3 Mbps down...impressive. Almost LTE-like.
Whats the difference between this and the European version?

1 difference I've noticed is that the US version has 1 more contact point on the back for the antenna
I see the specs are similar

Isn't LTE 100Mbps? Because here in Greece, we have a small area covered with LTE (which expands over time) and they claim that you can get up to 100Mbps if you have an LTE phone or usb modem..

The T-Mobile version might have different UMTS bands. All of the unboxing videos I've seen thus far say it has the 1900 MHz band. It might be a typo, though.

That's the theoretical speeds. Whatever carriers tell you (in the US anyway), is usually theoretical. In actuality, Verzion's LTE network usually gets 10 Mbps up and 5 Mbps down on average.

It may be because it supports the 1700 band for 4G (one extra band than the European) and it needs and extra antenna for it too. Did the reviewer show the back cover from the inside so we can see what's behind the hole?
PS: Please someone tell me how the damn multi-quote works

Oh I see... That's happing here with the HSDPA+ where they advertise speeds up to 21Mbps and I've never got more than 2-3Mbps even when I'm next to a cell tower. I've never tried our LTE network though, because I haven't got any device that supports it (yet).

Yes, the video does show the inside of the back cover so you can see the contacts.
To use multiquote just click on the button on the posts you want to multiquote If you have some form of autopaging on your browser however you need to actually load to the individual pages if the posts are on different pages. It doesn't seem to work over multiple pages (for me at least on Firefox with autopaging add-on), unless I actually load each page, click on the multiquote on the one post, then load the next page and multiquote the next post. You still need to click quote on the last post and then it should add all of the posts into one reply screen.

Same here man. T-Mobile advertises that some of their "4G" phones can get up to 21 Mbps down and I have yet to see anything like that. That's why I'm impressed by 9 Mbps down on the Sensation since it can only get up to 14.4 Mbps down max.

There is something additional in the US Sensation "4G" compared to the EU-Vodafone, its not . I hope we find out before its too late. I really hated it when the TMOUS HD2 had the extras compared to our "lowly" EU models.

actually even the EU versions support that, it's listed as AWS & it's meant to mean 1700/2100 (down/up) for tmous.

MHL Cable. Here's the official one that comes with an HDMI cable. http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/uk/p_htc_item.aspx?i=218634 Pretty spendy. I'm sure you can find it way cheaper elsewhere.
Expansys is selling one that is much cheaper than the HTC one.. it also lets you simultaneously charge (just like the HTC dongle)

So, will the captivate have HSUPA?? It says on the main page here on XDA, in the specs breakdown, next to HSUPA it says, NOT IN US.
I could have swore i read that it WILL have it?
I have an iphone 4, and have become accustomed to the crazy fast upload now, but i wanted to pick up the captivate to tinker with an android phone.
Everything I have read so far has said it is supported, but now that you mention it, what would be the difference, a certain frequency band I guess? Nothing I have read over thus far has said anything about a difference between countries (i.e. US and rest of world)...

Not sure if this is fast enough for you but unless AT&T massacred the radio in the Captivate you should experience speeds like.... http://twitpic.com/24a5ri
That's my Galaxy S in Orlando running solely off 1900MHz 3G.
FWIW, this indicates HSUPA is supported, but I'd consider this a preliminary spec that needs to be confirmed after the Captivate is released and tested.

Sweet, very nice.
Seriously, once you have HSUPA, you cant go back. Its like going back to edge.
I still think i'm going to hold out about a week or so after the device launches just to make sure of a few things that i need to have.
thanks fellas!
Can we bring this back for discussion again?
From what I understand, when you are on HSUPA you will get an H in the status bar instead of 3G. Is anyone seeing this? So far I haven't seen this and speedtests have agreed that I haven't had HSUPA. I had an iphone 4 before and I know it was on HSUPA in the same area.

Yes. If you look at my picture posted here http://twitpic.com/24a5ri you will see the 'H' you are asking about in the statusbar.
My phone says I'm on HSDPA but I only have the 3G icon on my screen. Do you only get the "H" when you have the high-speed upload? Seems a bit counter intuitive to me.

I've read somewhere awhile back that it fluctuates from showing 3G to HSDPA when it's active on data transfer and hits/detects the higher speed...don't hold me to that though. Maybe someone else can offer more insight into it but i've actively seen the icon switch from 3G to H with not interaction by me (background data i assume)
Well that's weird. I'll have to play with it more tomorrow and see if I can figure out why mine won't jump on HSUPA.

Okay, so at my house, where I know I got HSUPA on the iPhone 4, I'm definitely not getting it now on the Captivate. I have a signal strength of -51 dB, so I know I have enough signal. I couldn't get much higher signal if I sat under the tower. I'm wondering if I have a problem on my phone since trinikartel got HSUPA just fine.
I'm new to Android, anyone know something to check for this?

Well trinikartel said he was on a Galaxy S, not a Captivate. I'm thinking the US versions dont have HSUPA. I have another thread on here stating that I got 2457 down and only 174 up this morning. Also, I've never seen my 3G turn to an H.
Also, I dont know if it matters but on my 3G icon the down arrow is orange and the up arrow is green.
I think you guys don't realize that AT&T's HSUPA is still broken. Don't you remember that whole upload fiasco? It affects the Captivate as it does the iPhone 4 and it hasn't been fixed in those markets (apparently most) where they use the Lucent equipment.
I used to get great HSUPA upload speeds on my AT&T banded N1 and the upload has not been fixed as uploads are still stuck at regular 3G < 300kbit speeds.
The Captivate undoubtedly supports HSUPA, but AT&T's network is still borked and as far as I can tell they have not rolled out any fix.
I have both the N1 and the Captivate.
The only other thing I can think of is if AT&T is turning off the HSUPA based on the phones IMEI or model number.
Just checked with an iPhone 4 friend, can not get over 200k -300l, so there is still a system wide HSUPA failure as far as my limited testing in my market is concerned.
Used to be 1.6mbit up quite regularly on the N1 or the iPhone4.

Oh, I didn't see him say that. That sucks. I really hope the Captivate didn't get crippled, but right now, there's no other explanation than that. I SHOULD have HSUPA right now, and I don't.

I never had an issue where I live. While everyone else was going slow, I was still doing 1200-1300 Kbps.
Edit: Looks like there's a good chance the Captivate WAS crippled. There's absolutely no mention of HSUPA in the manual at all. This REALLY sucks. I may consider returning the phone because of this and leaving AT&T.
Its all 3g hsdpa/umts

AT&T devices do not show the H like the International versions, they use 3G icon only to avoid confusion apparently.
Well on AT&T's site it says the iphone 4 has umts/hsdpa. I'm pretty positive that it has hsupa. So I don't believe AT&T's site is an accurate source of information for their own products.
I just put my sim card back in my ATT Tilt2. It DOES show H in Dallas, TX. As it has since I bought it. Captivate shows 3g. There IS a speed difference.
I live in NYC and just ran a speed test. I'm getting 1.52 - 2mpbs down and .19mbps up. While my friend on his iphone 4 sitting right next to me is getting 3 mbps down and 1.8mbps up. This phone definitely slower. And when I tether the speeds go even slower. Is phone really crippled?

I'm getting about the same right now (at night I can get 4M down). The thing is that I'm getting the same crappy upstream speeds with my Nexus One. Before the whole AT&T equipment ****-up in early July, I was getting ~1.5M up with my Nexus. Now I'm wondering if they crippled it for non-Apple devices.

Hey goober, I read the article back on 02/06 when it was published. How about you read the OP before acting like an ass.
There is nothing the DEV's can do to fix the issues, it all comes down to AT&T expanding their HSPA+ footprint. Until then , you are SOL.

The OP wrote "can the devs please get to work on the radio... " implying that was the cause for the slow data speeds.
We all (except for you) have figured out the cause was the disabled HSUPA, which in turn increased latency slowing the DL speeds.
THIS HAS ALL BEEN CORRECTED.
Now the next step is for AT&T to fix their **** so we can actually see the speeds that the phone is perfectly capable of.

Not to get technical, but the HSPDA+ logo is actually correctly being used. The software and the communications standard being broadcast from the cell towers IS HSPDA+ and has been upgraded. So they are transmitting using the HSPDA protocol. Here of course is the problem...without the required wiring upgrade (aka backhaul) we cannot maximize the HSPDA+ signal, but we are getting it.
I admit it is a very narrow technicality, but it is true. Our phones are communicating in HSPDA+ as indicated.
I don't understand all these speed threads.
You can run a test on the same phone standing in the same place 3 times in a row and get 3 wildly different results.
If you can't get consistent results, what's the point of testing ?
Network congestion is the biggest factor so what your little icon at the top is doing is nearly irrelevant.

No, they're not, that's the point. Your phone is using HSDPA, go into Settings, About, Network, and look at the protocol being used. At least here in San Francisco it's HSDPA. Once they "flip the switch" it'll say HSPA+, but until then, it's HSDPA.
But to your point, your premise is right... regardless of HSDPA or HSPA+, the argument is moot until the backhaul beats the capacity. My 802.11n router gets me nothing over an 802.11g because my internet speed (backhaul) hasn't surpassed the speed capacity of a 802.11g router, let alone an 802.11n.
My only point to the guy who was bickering with me in the first couple responses was that he was arguing for the sake of arguing, because the OP's comments were 100% referring to HSDPA vs HSPA+ and asking when the phone will be able to get the newest technology advertised, which refer to download speed, and his first response was "this has been fixed in a Rom from XDA devs" which is an inaccurate response. When I corrected him, he pretended like he hadn't said what he said in post 3, and went on to then say (with name calling in defense) it's actually dependent on AT&T, not a rom update. LOL

Is there a question to that? LOL. You're right, you get much different results based on location.... people on here aren't complaining about what the little icon says, they're complaining about the actual speed. It's normal for fluctuation based on congestion. Here in San Francisco at 10pm I can get 3mbps, but during the day when the bridge and tunnel folk come into the city during the work day, the population of the city quadruples, and my speed chops in half, or more.
The speed test is the only accurate way to get a sense as to the technology's performance.

I agree... Bottom line, if you patch your upload to be HSUPA, you'll get the best performance out of THIS phone at THIS time with THIS network: AT&T, hehe. When they upgrade, you'll get faster speed. Done
here is what i see is happening. on my nexus one, my speed test, in los angeles, san diego, philly, is around this:
3Mbps down
1.6Mbps up
but on the inspire, no matter how many tests i run, or location, i get:
1.8Mbps down
0.3Mbps up
this is because the firmware on the inspire is not right, likely the build.prop needs to be changed from hsxpa=1 to hsxpa=2, or something like that. no matter how many times in a row that test is run, the needle bounces off that upload speed right at 0.3 and never breaks the barrier. guess what UMTS barrier is, its 384 Kbps, exactly 0.3 Mbps. the inspire firmware is crapped right now on this.
that is an HSUPA issue. the OTHER issue of getting HSPA+ speeds, like:
10 Mbps down
1.5Mbps up
that is totally different, and that is due to ATT's network currently not having enough backhaul to support those high speeds. from all the tests i've done with my nexus one, the highest i ever see is 3Mbps down. so to me that says the majority of the ATT network is still on 7.2 Mbps with backhaul barely enough to support that speed.
2 issues going on here.

It is HSPA+ not LTE phones by ATT yet seeing as there is not enough coverage i guess but HSPA works GREAT super fast speeds

Given that they're relatively recent too, probably very heavy on the battery. Takes time to get the modem optimized... Phone manufacturers are still trying to get 3g modems' usage right. I still go on 2G EDGE or turn off data for the most part to get more juice.
Didn't know if anyone here on T-Mobile US has tried the EU Sensation but I received mine today, and so far everything is quite nice. Phone feels solid and has a good weight to it. I tried out the speed test and..... I got similar speeds to my G2x. =D Now all I'm missing is wifi calling.

If you want me to try anything let me know. I'll post pictures later after I get back.

There is no 4G radio on the US Sensation, it is just capable of 4G speeds (DL14.4/UL5.68)
Im not sure whether there is really difference even in the 3G frequencies, as the european model also supports AWS (1700mhz) in addition to 900/2100 frequencies used in Europe.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the main difference is the marketing name and t-mobile branding.

So you can get 4G speeds on a device that is not outfitted with a 4G radio? I guess I have more to learn...

Just want to let you know that AWS is actually 1700/2100. It uses one frequency for downlink, one for uplink.

T-Mobile & AT&T (for now) actually dont have real 4G. They have what they call 4G speeds. It is the same as HSPA+ outside USA.
Both the Sensation & Sensation "4G" on HTC's website & T-mobiles website have the same Internet speeds:
Under Internet: HTC's website for the Sensation list speeds under 3G as Up to 14.4 Mbps download speed and up to 5.76 Mbps upload speed.
T-Mobile's website for the Sensation 4G lists the Internet spped for 4G as Up to 14.4 Mbps download speed and up to 5.76 Mbps upload speed.

Based on photo evidence posted in other threads there's an extra connector (antenna?) on the back cover of the TMO US version of the phone. So, the Euro and US models are different.

So that's about a 5.6 Mb pipe. That's what I get with my HD2 on 3.5 G. Do you get an H+ or anything indicating T-Mobile's HSPA+ network? aka "4G"

This is true, forgot to mention about it. It must be antenna for this 1700mhz frequency which isn't in use in Europe. This whole AWS thing is new to me, as in Europe we don't have such thing. Some wrote here on xda that he imported a euro-version of the phone to USA and it worked fine in t-mobiles network.
So I have bought a HTC u11 plus and should get it today. What I have done the past week is check my bands at the places I visit most. And while driving. I used lte discovery app to help me with this and some Google searches. In my findings band 2 is hardly used when I am at home or driving. My 1+5 is always on band 4 or 12. At home is the only place where it is on band 2 but it switches to 4 and uses this mostly but I use wifi calling at home due to coverage sucking at my house. I did a Google search on band 2 and it is not very good around my areas. So people with TMobile USA should be fine to get this phone and use here. Also my cousin has a HTC 10 from overseas which has less bands enabled and has never had an issue with lte or call connection with TMobile. Once I get the phone I will do more testing for TMobile folks. Let me know your results if you have any.

Lol i got the notification on this and saw CJ. For a minute i was like is he referring to me? Who the heck is CJ lol i laughed after i figured it out. . Anyway so after having the phone in my hands with all of its beauty and awesomeness. I could not take it anymore. This phone works great if you have a wifi and data connection all the time. But for people who still makes voice phone calls it is the worst.. so bad i put it on ebay yesterday. I got so frustrated the other day. I was trying to make a call and when you do, it drops down to 2g,3g. The call qualty on that is horrible. The calls always dropped and when i did have a good connection the quality was horrible. Half the time i would not get text messages and not everyone uses whats app and that is what i was trying to use because i always will have data. No VOLTE which i missed no WIfi calling which does come in handy. So i kept looking and band 2 does more than LTE I believe that band 2 also deals with AWS which is needed for calling. Man i tried.... i tried to put up with it here in the states. The phone itself is just amazing the Pixel that got away is what i call it. So if you are here in the states Dont buy it unless you have data connection and everyone has like data messaging or calling for a strong data connection. I am really sad and dissapointed at HTC the phone i have been waiting for since the HTC sensation 4g. Hopes this helps.

Well, crap. Thank you for conducting the experiment. Yeah, it's the Pixel 2XL WITH an sd card slot, which is what I want, except apparently without Band 2, the thing's hobbled. I was gonna install the Google HDR+ camera app and have it all! Damn.
I got my hopes up because I saw reports of people bringing the Exynos Note 8 over here and getting it to work, but IT has Band 2! Seriously, how tough is it to add these bands! Do people want to sell phones or not?!!
Anyway, thanks again. An answer is an answer, even if it's not the one I was hoping for.
And yeah, if you're reclaiming that term, I completely respect that, but I still gotta go with CJ.
Sucks to hear that. I've been using my HTC U11+ in the Bay Area for about two weeks now and so far it's been absolutely flawless. Not a single issue finding LTE or dropping calls.

I've had the phone since late December and have had the same experience in the greater Baltimore area. Must be different bands/stronger network in our areas.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I got it from Amazon. Took about 4-5 days to receive it even though Amazons system said 2 weeks. I also just noticed that it's a decent amount cheaper now as well compared to when I bought it in December by over $100.

I agree with this I've had zero issues so far since getting this phone. Only had it for a day now but prior to I ran LTE Discover on my HTC U11 and saw I very rarely used Band 2 (San Diego). After some digging I saw how Band 2 works on T-Mobile and I'm OK without it. I'll be in Vegas in a week so I'll be curious how it holds up there, though I don't really expect hiccups. The one thing I do want to get back is VOLTE/VOWIFI.

I'm not far from you and I just picked up my U11+ from Swappa. Does this phone actually read "4G LTE" when in LTE service area? I have not seen it yet. I have the Nexus 6 and a Note 5 and both have had that when in and around Maryland. THanks for replying when you do.

No, it just says 4G. However, when using apps such as Speed Test by Ookla, it says I'm connected to "LTE T-Mobile", and the speed test are roughly what I was getting on my previous iPhone 6S Plus.

Thank you. I did install LTE Discovery and was able to get information on what band I am on and more. It keeps flipping back to 'H' loads which is made me wondering what I might be doing wrong if it is not in the phone itself. I am in a strong 4G LTE area for work (base) and home. My Nexus 6 and my Note 5 always read 4G LTE in an area as such. I still love this phone even though it's not 2 weeks old yet.
I'm tempted to get this for an upgrade from my HTC 10. I don't care too much about the dual camera for the HTC 12+, plus I want it in Red which might not even come out in the US. So with the bigger battery 3,900 mah, about $200 less and the red color now. Would this be a good buy if I typically travel around the east coast?
I have one I purchased on a recent trip overseas to Taiwan. My carrier here in the US is Tmobile and I only have connectivity issues in rural areas. Can someone point me to a stock ROM from Tmobile that would be compatible with this phone?
Thanks.
