[Q] Noob question about LTE/4G - Samsung Infuse 4G

I'm thinking about getting this phone for my wife and I was just wondering if it will only be HSPA+ or will it support AT&T LTE whenever it comes out? Thanks.

It is HSPA+ not LTE phones by ATT yet seeing as there is not enough coverage i guess but HSPA works GREAT super fast speeds

Nope, that's a hardware requirement.
I am pretty sure you need a different radio (hardware) for LTE.

by the time att gets lte nationwide the phone will be obsolete. if you are thinking verizon instead, well there data in many areas is not even worth having. my friend has a thunderbolt and gets 20 mbps in manhatten, but at home in orange county he is lucky to get 500kbps at times. i get 5-6 mbps anywhere. which one is better? you tell me.

Hmm well this is for my wife I just want to mess with it for a while I don't have upgrade anyways haha I'm waiting until the Galaxy S2

Given that they're relatively recent too, probably very heavy on the battery. Takes time to get the modem optimized... Phone manufacturers are still trying to get 3g modems' usage right. I still go on 2G EDGE or turn off data for the most part to get more juice.

AT&T did it again, no way to turn off 4G LTE?

Looks like ATampT is becoming notorious for not including any 3G or 4G toggles. Not only can customers not turn off 3G in spotty 3G areas but now they can't turn off 4G LTE????!!!! Does AT&T not realize that someone who is in a spotty 4G LTE area will have their phone die twice as quick? I don't understand for the life in me why they don't give the customer the option to choose which network they want to be on?
I know I have the option to turn off cellular data but then I have no data whatsoever. If my phone sits in the drawer at work most of the day why can't it be forced to EDGE??? I know for a fact AT&T has an EDGE network to fall back on out here.
They allow iPhone 3GS and 4 owners to toggle 3G but not the 4S which is HSPA+. Now they don't allow you to turn off 4G LTE unless you root. WOW!!!
Honestly, they could care less about the battery life, but they do want you to use more data so they make more money. The faster the connection, the easier it would be to exceed your limit without realizing until its too late, or you may upgrade your data package because its faster. Either way is a win win for AT&T which means more money.

Wow I never thought of that. I have unlimited but I guess the faster the connection the faster I can be throttled. Boy do I wish there was a good cell phone company in America that actually gave a sh*t about their customers.
Hopefully I will be able to add the toggles in on my rom.
another idea, make another APN without the info for LTE.

Yes, there are many roms for the Samsung SkyRocket that allow such toggles. Its a setting with the modem radio.

yes, but may need a modded kernel, root for sure. there are apps that shut off lte and 3g but require root. like DD said, try changing the apn.
It's also because they want to alleviate their load on the towers. All the people on 4g LTE are not on 3g, they don't care if it kills your battery because the signal is spotty.
does this mean even after sim unlock. i wouldnt be able to use this phone overseas and have 3g working?
Can you not change it under *#*#4636#*#* under phone info and scroll to preferred network type.
someone posted the answer to this question in another thread.
The LTE is integrated. So it just looks for the best available network. If you dont have lte, then it will connect you to 3g or hspa+.

Nope. Selecting any option that is not LTE it just bounces back to the "GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto" option. Heck, even selecting "LTE only" bounces back to the default.

This was speculation on the part of that poster. See my response in that thread.
I remember this was also an issue on the Vivid. Toggle widgets don't work, the *#*#4636#*#* code doesn't work.
Try changing the APN to turn off LTE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19170113
Not a convenient toggle. But once you have the second APN setup, it wouldn't be too much of a pain to switch back and forth APNs (if it does work).
Also for the majority of the US, it doesn't even matter because AT&T LTE coverage is pretty minimal in its current form.
It even shocks me because ...
I'm quite surprised that AT&T does not allow you to turn off LTE.
My Rogers unit specifically allows this, so it's very strange to me.
Peter
I mentioned earlier it killing your battery, but considering the LTE is built in, there's no reason to really worry.

speculation sounds about right
you posted that you got 13 hours with your phone. Sounds about right. 1.5 hours of talk time with mild usuage. Not sure if you had data on or off during those times. So.....
DING DING DING we have a winner

Doesn't it bother you AT&T customers that...

You have no 32GB phone available, and it could be weeks or months before you guys see a 32GB version?
You guys can't TRULY talk & surf because AT&ampT throttles your speeds during calls? Pings also drastically increase. Test it out!
NO unlimited data plan option. Those who were lucky to keep the $30 unlimited plan are throttled at 5GB.
AT&T RAT locks their modems, making it near impossible to force EDGE or HSPA only to preserve battery life.
Pre-orders are ALWAYS a mess. Galaxy Note 2 had no white option available during pre-order.
All of this sure as hell bothers me, and makes me crave T-Mobile, except I don't want 2G.
So what's with all these AT&T threads? Why are there that many people on them if they are like this?

I'd like if T-Mobile was an option for me, but I like to have reception to make phone calls. Also - I don't think you're getting the 32 at T-mobile.
AT&T works best for me, GSM, Great coverage, fast data speeds, Great phone selections, Great company discount on monthly bill.
I am not sure if its AT&T or Samsung's Fault for not having a 32gb option available for pre order but I am sure it wont be long before the 32 model is available.
Also the fact that as an ATT customer, I can buy the international version and have a 3g working phone. Since there is no LTE from ATT in my area, I have no plans to get the quad core version that ATT offers.

no carrier is getting the 32gb models now. i talked to samsung and they told me it won't be anytime soon.
+ best coverage for my area out of the big 4
+ good (best?) phone selection
- HORRIBLE customer service. 611 is junk. 10% chance of getting someone you can actually understand and speaks clear English. The AT&T policies change depending on who you talk to. No consistency.
- The AT&T reps at the corp stores are extremely rude and always expect that you have no idea what you are talking about.... for example, while I was looking at a Lumia 920, the rep said "this is the newest Android phone we have", which I politely stated that this is actually a Windows Phone 8. He laughed and said "does this look like a computer to you?" This is just one example of many.
- The HSPA+ coverage at my home is laggy and often times doesn't work at all. I have better luck with 3G/EDGE for some reason.
- Heaven help you if you have a Nexus phone. They have NO IDEA what it is, how you have it or why it works with their network. It's like some kind of alien device that breaks their understanding of how cell phones are supposed to work. For example, I'm standing in the store with my GSM Galaxy Nexus with "No Service" showing. No amount of rebooting or factory resetting is getting me back on the network, so I assume it's a problem with my account. The guy says "I don't see this phone in our system. You can't use a Verizon phone on AT&T"... I said "yes I agree, but this is a GSM phone and has ALWAYS worked on AT&T until today". He shrugged and said "You're gonna have to call 611 cuse you lost me". Turns out someone somewhere sometime had put me on an "iPhone data plan"...which is somehow DIFFERENT from a "every other phone data plan". I figured that out from looking at my account online.
Very sorry for the above rant. T-Mobile and Sprint coverage is non-exsistant and I'm not a huge fan of Verizon's phone selection.
Not trolling at all.
No one mentions the fact that they throttle speeds during calls to 1mbps or less with high pings??? Doesn't anyone want the option to turn LTE off and use HSPA only? This comes in handy if your phone sits in your desk drawer all day at at work?

Never had trouble with throttling or pings while on a phone call, but I haven't been able to turn LTE off. Luckily with the S4, I won't want to since the battery is so big.

Test it out!!! Run a speedtest during a call. I bet you anything you won't get anything greater than 1mbps down and your ping will be high. Run the test off the call and you'll have better results.
Frustrates me to know end.
T-Mobile does not do this.
I'm on AT&T because in my area Anchorage, Alaska AT&T offers newest phones and when I travel to the lower 48 states I'm pretty much guaranteed coverage in the major cities I visit. Verizon is coming up here this summer so we'll see how they compare to AT&T.
Doesn't bother me at all. I don't need a 32gb phone. I have no idea why I need to surf and talk at the same time. And I don't need an unlimited plan as most places I go have wifi.
At most I use 500mb of my 2gb plan per month. At most. Even with tons of streaming of music.

Yes it is. Uploads are like 0.01mbps. Test it out!!! I have called many, many times. AT&T doesn't acknowledge this.
If you are pulling 5-7mbps on HSPA+ then you should pull that on a call. They are throttling everyone's speeds during calls and returning them to normal once the call ends.
Pings are significantly higher also. Talking and surfing is pretty much unusable. It wasn't always like this though. Can't wait to see what they do once calls are made over LTE. I bet they'll throttle with LTE too.
Test it out!
And the fact that AT&T wants me on the fastest network is absurd too. I should be able to force H+ or 2G when I WANT TO SAVE DATA USAGE!!! I don't always need LTE. WHY CAN'T WE FN TURN IT OFF???
To answer your question, yes, all those things bother me. But, Sprint and T-Mobile both have spotty coverage and a very limited selection of phones, and Verizon is the devil. (locked bootloaders, losing unlimited data when using an upgrade, etc.)
AT&T is truly the best option for me. Good coverage, huge selection of phones, more dev support since the phones are GSM.

I'm a consumer just like you. I am mad that a smaller carrier doesn't throttle speeds during calls during calls and gives customers the option to turn off 3G/4G.
You tell me how its beneficial if my device sits on LTE all day when I don't need it too? If it was on HSPA or EDGE I could still maintain a data connection and preserve battery life.
Not to mention, if I am close to my data limit, forcing HSPA or EDGE will help me by not going over my limit, because its slower.

You can set caps on your phone so you don't go over. Very easy to do. Forcing HSPA or EDGE doesn't prevent you from going over. It just goes slower but uses the same amount of data to accomplish the same goal. I have heard that LTE as part of SoC uses much less power. But haven't tested it myself. Considering I have wifi at work I just turn off data completely and use wifi.

Just cause its slower doesn't mean it uses any less data...regardless of speed your still going to end up using the same amount of data...although I do agree you should have the option to turn off LTE, however you can always add a non LTE apn and just switch sons when ever you want to toggle LTE

LTE mode

So I've noticed that since I've flashed the PAC rom that this is the first time that I've actually seen LTE mode work on my phone. Is there something that the other roms are not utilizing that is making this function possible?
So... on CM10.2 you are saying LTE does not function?
I'm not aware of "anything special" on PAC, which ROM's have you tried where it does not work?

Ok cool.....that was one thing I had been confused about which was what LTE actually was. About 6 months ago there was about a week long span that I was without phone service in my area because Sprint was upgrading their towers to LTE but when everything was back to normal I didn't notice anything different about the performance of my service with Sprint. And LTE was supposed to be the next "BIG" thing. Still not so sure whats special about it since the 4G has always been there.

LTE is quite a big faster then EVDO, which is all I have in my area. Well, there's WiMax, but I don't want to confuse you lol.
Basically there are many different flavors of 4 geeee. The best part? The official board that determines what is and what isn't 3g/4g say that none of what the carrier's advertise is technically 4g.
So, hizzah. Welcome to the marketing party. I can tell you that LTE is faster than EVDO. Do a speed test (there's a few apps on the Play Store) on 4g, and then force your phone to 3g or next time you go somewhere there is no 4g, try another speed test... there's a pretty big difference .

Wifi will still have its place - I don't see LTE being a solution for stadiums. In the home, I don't see people running out and replacing their home internet connections with LTE access points.
But LTE is starting to become a viable option as a backup internet circuit for businesses. Cisco is starting to put LTE-ready modules in their business-class gateways.
Here we are, and look at South Korea, already launched LTE-A or LTE Advanced...

Anyone else having terrible mobile data performance?

I've been with ATT for a tear bow. I had the S4 before this G3. On my S4 I would have LTE most places around my town. Since getting my G3 I rarely get LTE. When I do get LTE it doesn't hold on to that connection very long.
Yesterday I was trying to look something up and I was on Edge (3g) and it was taking forever, so I grabbed my wife's S5 and it was on LTE (also on ATT) and the internet worked great.
Are the radios in this phone just that bad? I'm going to get a new Sim card today to see if that can fix the issue, I'm hesitant to return the phone for another because I'll probably get a refurb and my luck with refurb cell phones hasn't been good

Much better than Sprint in my area. My Sprint GS5 radio is real garbage. Kills the battery too. The Sprint variant of the GS5 is horrible with Spark.
You may have a lemon radio in your phone.
I'm wondering that, I'd hate to get a refurb and fine out it performs the same

I got a new sim yesterday also. not looking like it's making much of a difference. I can't get full bars unless i'm out on the street. I used to get full bars in my office, relatively close to a window.
Don't really want to trade this if for a refurb to have the same thing.
Is the antenna on the back of the battery case? or is that just a 'booster'?

I've had the AT&T G3 since July 18th with no problems. My old G-note would not pick up LTE in my office at work but I get LTE with this phone. No dropped calls and super fast data. I live in northern VA outside DC so LTE is really good here.
I just realized I'm being throttled... May data has sucked last few days also lol... I'm at crawling speeds

as far as bars go mine seems just about right, but it does lose service a bit more than my S4 did. sometimes my wife and i will both have 3 or 4 bars and she will have LTE and i will be on EDGE or 4G
Absolutely love the device as a smartphone, but unfortunately suffer from the same issues as the rest of you here.
Loses signal where other ATT devices do not, drops LTE for HSPA or EDGE where other devices stay on LTE.
Really hoping the crappy radio can be fixed with a firmware update, and that it isn't a hardware design flaw...

Not sure what if anything changed, possibly something with the network but now I get full bars at my desk, where yesterday I wasn't. I know this isn't very scientific but now I get full bars in the same seat where for the last week I've been down 1 or 2. I didn't think to run a speedtest before but it looks good now, 18.4 down and 10 up.

I'm holding out for an OTA to see if it gets any better before I bite the bbullet and get a refurb

That's weird
I feel like mine holds onto LTE better than with the old sim

I also forgot to mention that when I had my Sim swapped out that ISIS (Did they change the name because now it says ' Soft Card') doesn't work. When I launch the Soft Card (Isis) app it says that i need an enhanced SIM. So it looks like I have to go back to AT&T to get yet another SIM.

Of another G3? I wouldn't waste time doing that. Sounds like they're all the same radio-wise.
Waiting on an OTA too... but if nothing comes, I will jump ship to another device altogether. One with a competent radio.

I want to root and try to change this in the build prop.
Permanent LTE Option
# default value is 9
ro.telephony.default_network=12
Part of me thinks it will help
I believe this makes the phone hang onto an LTE connection as long as possible

US T-Mobile

So I have bought a HTC u11 plus and should get it today. What I have done the past week is check my bands at the places I visit most. And while driving. I used lte discovery app to help me with this and some Google searches. In my findings band 2 is hardly used when I am at home or driving. My 1+5 is always on band 4 or 12. At home is the only place where it is on band 2 but it switches to 4 and uses this mostly but I use wifi calling at home due to coverage sucking at my house. I did a Google search on band 2 and it is not very good around my areas. So people with TMobile USA should be fine to get this phone and use here. Also my cousin has a HTC 10 from overseas which has less bands enabled and has never had an issue with lte or call connection with TMobile. Once I get the phone I will do more testing for TMobile folks. Let me know your results if you have any.

Lol i got the notification on this and saw CJ. For a minute i was like is he referring to me? Who the heck is CJ lol i laughed after i figured it out. . Anyway so after having the phone in my hands with all of its beauty and awesomeness. I could not take it anymore. This phone works great if you have a wifi and data connection all the time. But for people who still makes voice phone calls it is the worst.. so bad i put it on ebay yesterday. I got so frustrated the other day. I was trying to make a call and when you do, it drops down to 2g,3g. The call qualty on that is horrible. The calls always dropped and when i did have a good connection the quality was horrible. Half the time i would not get text messages and not everyone uses whats app and that is what i was trying to use because i always will have data. No VOLTE which i missed no WIfi calling which does come in handy. So i kept looking and band 2 does more than LTE I believe that band 2 also deals with AWS which is needed for calling. Man i tried.... i tried to put up with it here in the states. The phone itself is just amazing the Pixel that got away is what i call it. So if you are here in the states Dont buy it unless you have data connection and everyone has like data messaging or calling for a strong data connection. I am really sad and dissapointed at HTC the phone i have been waiting for since the HTC sensation 4g. Hopes this helps.

Well, crap. Thank you for conducting the experiment. Yeah, it's the Pixel 2XL WITH an sd card slot, which is what I want, except apparently without Band 2, the thing's hobbled. I was gonna install the Google HDR+ camera app and have it all! Damn.
I got my hopes up because I saw reports of people bringing the Exynos Note 8 over here and getting it to work, but IT has Band 2! Seriously, how tough is it to add these bands! Do people want to sell phones or not?!!
Anyway, thanks again. An answer is an answer, even if it's not the one I was hoping for.
And yeah, if you're reclaiming that term, I completely respect that, but I still gotta go with CJ.
Sucks to hear that. I've been using my HTC U11+ in the Bay Area for about two weeks now and so far it's been absolutely flawless. Not a single issue finding LTE or dropping calls.

I've had the phone since late December and have had the same experience in the greater Baltimore area. Must be different bands/stronger network in our areas.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I got it from Amazon. Took about 4-5 days to receive it even though Amazons system said 2 weeks. I also just noticed that it's a decent amount cheaper now as well compared to when I bought it in December by over $100.

I agree with this I've had zero issues so far since getting this phone. Only had it for a day now but prior to I ran LTE Discover on my HTC U11 and saw I very rarely used Band 2 (San Diego). After some digging I saw how Band 2 works on T-Mobile and I'm OK without it. I'll be in Vegas in a week so I'll be curious how it holds up there, though I don't really expect hiccups. The one thing I do want to get back is VOLTE/VOWIFI.

I'm not far from you and I just picked up my U11+ from Swappa. Does this phone actually read "4G LTE" when in LTE service area? I have not seen it yet. I have the Nexus 6 and a Note 5 and both have had that when in and around Maryland. THanks for replying when you do.

No, it just says 4G. However, when using apps such as Speed Test by Ookla, it says I'm connected to "LTE T-Mobile", and the speed test are roughly what I was getting on my previous iPhone 6S Plus.

Thank you. I did install LTE Discovery and was able to get information on what band I am on and more. It keeps flipping back to 'H' loads which is made me wondering what I might be doing wrong if it is not in the phone itself. I am in a strong 4G LTE area for work (base) and home. My Nexus 6 and my Note 5 always read 4G LTE in an area as such. I still love this phone even though it's not 2 weeks old yet.
I'm tempted to get this for an upgrade from my HTC 10. I don't care too much about the dual camera for the HTC 12+, plus I want it in Red which might not even come out in the US. So with the bigger battery 3,900 mah, about $200 less and the red color now. Would this be a good buy if I typically travel around the east coast?
I have one I purchased on a recent trip overseas to Taiwan. My carrier here in the US is Tmobile and I only have connectivity issues in rural areas. Can someone point me to a stock ROM from Tmobile that would be compatible with this phone?
Thanks.
