T-mobile G2X does support AT&T bands - T-Mobile LG G2x

Ill keep this short. There has been a lot of talk lately about tmo lying about the AT&T bands however I am here to prove that our phones are setup and enabled for AT&T . The option to enable is hidden. See below for proof.

not so sweet. this is the fifth time this hidden menu method has been brought up in this forum. The rest are in the original thread regarding the lack of non AWS band support. THIS DOES NOT WORK. At least for now, until someone awesome makes it work.

People have been bringing this up over and over again.
Prove it by popping in an AT&T SIM in an unlocked G2x. If it does not work, then there is a lot more to it than a band selection window.

My question is has anyone sim unlocked their g2x and attempted this ? Also *#*#4636#*#* should do the same under phone info

Yes, a number of people have tried it and no go. The belief is that the bands are there but the radios may not even be able to see them or they are simply locked down and can be enabled. I have run into both those scenarios in the past. Whether the lock down comes from AT&T or from T-mo is unknown to my knowledge.

After more poking around the Hidden Menu, WCDMA doesn't seem to be supported for AT&T. Thoughts?
I'm unlocked and on AT&T now but only on 2G.

Guys, this is easy...
THE RADIO DOES NOT SUPPORT UMTS 850/1900 RIGHT NOW!
I can think of several examples (Atrix, Captivate, Inspire "4g") of phones that operate / are supposed to operate at certain speeds or frequencies. They can say on the box that it supports these bands because the hardware is capable of it... we just need the right radio / baseband image.
EG: My captivate gets about ~2mbps down / 1.5 up because I have a different radio image. I think it's the same thing we're looking at here.

Totally understand this. But, the question is: is it possible with an update? That's the point.

Yeah, an update to the radio that unlocks those bands, that's if one is released.

Off topic, but how are you getting Linpack 49Mflops on the G2x ? I'm getting around 35 each time I run it.

the software displays the base bands but the radio does not receive the frequencies.
End of line.
My T-Mobile Nexus displayed that info so did my G2 and Vibrant 4G but the Frequencies are different and the radio will not get them.

My LG Optimus One from Telus has an identical band selection menu which includes bands that the phone does not support. The screenshot proves nothing. Could a moderator just close this thread before anyone else gets their hopes up?

No.
Its just the menu that I'd there.
If the hardware doesn't support it it won't work.
You don't play golf with a hokey stick even though it looks like you can.

i find it amazing that none of the major sites have talked about this despite heavily promoting about its quad 4g-ness in many reviews. It is very irrresponsible.

Looking through the LG-P999 (optimus 2x/ g2x) service manual, which you can find it yourself on the interwebz:

HTC HD2 UK Release on US 3g

Topic 1:
I've been searching and doing some research over the past few days, but I'm still learning. I contacted eXpansis about purchasing a HD2 on release and asked them if it would work on a the us 3g (at&t) system. They promptly said no. This is where my confusion sets in. In reviewing the bands that are supported by the phone:

It shows the bands that at&t uses for 3g 850 and 1900. But in the specs listed in the screenie the 850 and 1900 are listed under GSM, What I need is the 850 and 1900 bands listed under HSPA/WCDMA correct? So the phone would function for voice calls etc, but data would be null or extremely limited correct?
Also this is a hardware requirement, not rom upgradable?
Topic 2: I may start a new thread for this as others have probably gone before me.
It seems the HD2 is destined for TMOUSA in q1 of 2010. Can I port this phone to at&t services? This would require the sim unlock,SPL (not sure what this is) unlock and a radio rom flash?
Thanks for putting up with my questions, it's making me loose my hair even faster.

First: the unlocked HD2 will still get AT&T data on EDGE speeds. that's what the GSM is. it'll pick up EDGE on all 4 of those bands. you're right, you need the 850/1900 bands under the HSPA/WCDMA bands. so therefore, the Euro unlocked HD2 won't get 3G on AT&T's network here.
Second: you could get the phone unlocked from T-MO USA, and you'd only have to SIM unlock it. it's your choice if you wanna flash a HARD SPL and a new radio and ROM. all you need to do in order to use it on AT&T's network is get it SIM unlocked. but you still won't get 3G on AT&T, since T-Mo and AT&T use different 3G bands.

So on to the second plan since plan one is out, and the second plan is limited , damn so plan 3? ha...I need 3g+ for tethering. I'm concerned with T-MO USA because I have never used them. After reviewing the coverage information over at GSM World,
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml
TMOUSA shows no 3g, only GSM 1900, where at&t mobility show 3G 850/1900. So 3g is possible over GSM1900? I'm seeing a max rate of 9.6kbits/s on GSM can this be correct? Are faster speeds available?

I'm not too familiar with the exact speeds, but I know that EDGE speeds definitely won't be fast enough for tethering. the main reason why I wouldn't go to T-MO is because of their lack of 3G coverage.
and yes, 3G is possible over the 1900 bandwidth. T-Mo uses the 2100 band, but only because that was the only band available to them when they opened their 3G network. T-MO USA is was the last major US carrier to adopt 3G, and are therefore way behind in their development of it. while AT&T, Sprint and VZW are already beginning to develop their 4G networks, T-Mo is still trying to broaden their 3G coverage

hey man don't worry about it. and it's not really for sure that AT&T won't get it. they lose exclusive rights to the iPhone next year (I think. could be 2011 too tho...) but there's always a chance that they could pick up the HD2. I didn't jump the AT&T ship for the tp2, but if AT&T doesn't get it then I might actually leave.
Ok new information, I've got the TP2 for at&t ready for purchase on sunday, but I just found this information. Could someone take a look at it for me? It looks like the 3 bands
HD2 info from phone arena:
Network Type GSM Quad-band phone capable of global roaming (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
UMTS dual-band European/Asian 3G (900/2100 MHz)
Tilt2 band information from At&t official site:
Wireless Technology
GSM/GPRS850/900/1800/1900 MHz 3G850/1900/2100 MHz EDGE high speed data networkBLUETOOTH® technology2.1
Do you see where the 2100 mhz bands match up? Is the difference the UMTS vs 3g? Are they not the same technology?

you're right, UMTS and 3G are the same thing. UMTS is basically normal 3G, while HSDPA is actually more along the lines of 3.5G.
I'm not too sure about what you're asking, but if you're wondering if, since the AT&T Tilt2 utilizes tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100), will the HD2 be able to run AT&T's 3G, then the answer, sadly, is no. this is simply because AT&T does not use the 2100 band, only the 850/1900 bands. the reason they usually make their phones with tri-band 3G frequencies is so that their subscribers can get some 3G coverage when they travel abroad (whether it's to another state or out of the country.) adding another 3G band allows their subscribers to have more 3G coverage, particularly if they travel out of the country. it all depends on whether the state/country they go to utilizes the 2100 band.
whew, that was a bit of typing. hope I was of some help.

I think their website is wrong. If you watch some of the unboxing videos for the Vodafone Sensation, the box lists AWS and not 1900. I have only the videos to go by though. Wait for the T–mobile US version to come out though. It may have the right frequencies for AT&T, or so I've heard.

I have a t-mobile (US) version, however it came in a generic box. Is there a way to tell what frequencies it supports?
Looking at the Gallery for an article at TmoNews, a picture of the box showed the frequencies available on the Sensation 4G.

The box shows UMTS frequencies are 1700, 2100 and 1900. Isn't 1900 AT&T?

There are some special codes you can dial to display service menus that include the frequencies in use. Don't know them for HTC. Some Googling might turn up the answer.
It was my understanding that you can use 850 or 1900 for 3G on AT&T but didn't necessarily have to have both. But this is just something I vaguely remember hearing somewhere and don't have any personal experience to back it up.

Yeah you don't need both. I used to rock a phone with only 1900, but you only get 3g in some areas and not others. And if I remember correctly att was/is actively moving all 3g onto the 850 band, so really I think the 850 band is more important of the two. Really did suck when everyone else had 3g and I was on edge because it was a 850 zone for 3g.

Never, ever, EVER look forward to a Canadian release. We get **** MONTHS after the UK and US if we're lucky!!!
When it comes to new phones, just keep the word "Canada" out of the discussion unless you're emo and look forward to disappointment lol. The thought of acquiring a Canadian version of the Sensation never even crossed my mind. All my phones have always been imported.
The only thing I use carrier upgrades for with my actual service here is so I can sell the phone which makes the most money so I can import a new one. The wireless industry in Canada is way behind even the poorest third world nations.

According to these published specs it may be true:
http://www.htc.com/www/product/sensation/specification.html
Network (5)
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia/T-Mobile US: 900/AWS/2100 MHz
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
5. Network bands in regions other than Europe and Asia Pacific may be different, depending on the mobile operator and your location. Please check with your mobile operator.
What's not perfectly clear is whether the European models actually include AWS. Given the recent fiasco with the G2x we won't really know until someone actually tries it.

Didn't know that. Based my comment on the OP question, which implied it hadn't been tested.
Peter Rojas at gdgt.com is also testing the European HTC Sensation and he said he is getting HSPA speeds on his T-mobile sim.

samnada is right, HTC put the AWS frequencies in all versions of the Sensation
I've never listened to the engadget mobile podcast before. that does not sound like a girls voice.
Peter Rojas also said that his AT&T SIM is only giving him EDGE. I was hoping the international version would also have the 1900 MHz band at the least (like the Tmo Vibrant).

So then is there any reason to wait for the Sensation to be released in the US if we just want to buy it outright?
Or will the two devices be exactly the same with just different packaging?
(For example, what about the charger cable -- will it be a European plug?)

My biggest hesitation is wanting a US warranty. I'd rather wait another week to get that. I would expect the charger to have a European plug, but adapters are dirt cheap, so not a big deal on that.

If you don't mind paying the extra couple of hundred dollars to buy the imported European model, then go ahead and buy it now. I think it might be worth saving your money and just buying it from T-mobile when it comes out next week.
GSMArena has GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 900/2100 on the European Sensation and GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 900/1700/2100 on the 4G.

Why go to gsmarena when htc has it listed on both their worldwide & uk sites as:
Network
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia/T-Mobile US: 900/AWS/2100 MHz
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
850/900/1800/1900 MHz

So I believe GSMArena is mistaken with their posted specs for these phones.

Whoa, wait a tick. Is that right? UTMS 1900 MHz? Is that the US Tmo version? If so, it should work on AT&T's 3G for those who have coverage in that band. Chicago certainly does. This is why the Vibrant works on AT&T's 3G.
It is the box for the Sensation 4G. As far as I know T-Mobile US is the only company calling it that. According to what the box says, it should work on AT&T's 1900MHz band for 3G once the phone is carrier unlocked. If the box has bad information on it, then it might not work. Once the phone is actually released and tested, hopefully we will know for sure at that point.
On the previous page it states someone tried an ATT sin card and only got edge.

[Q] Will the Unlocked One S support T-Mobile AWS?

From what I've read, I believe the answer is "close but no cigar." Am I right? Or should we expect this device to work pretty well at grabbing onto HSDPA signals, but with a little higher battery drain, since the radio would have to work harder?
I have been considering pre-ordering an unlocked, black HTC One S (MAO model) from either Negri Electronics or Expansys, but I don't want to waste my time & money if this phone is, quite literally, a non-starter on the T-Mobile US network.
I'm a former CDMA subscriber and I've only been with TMo for 8-9 months. This would also be my first unlocked phone purchase, so thanks in advance for any insight you guys can offer.
I'm just going to wait and buy it from T-Mobile. Yeah I'll pay full retail but I'll sell my old phone to cover most of the cost; that's kind of how I do my upgrades! I just don't want to worry about it not working. I think it needs 1700 and 2100 bands for 3G/4G to work.
@unclespoon - I hear you, but I'm interested in the black model, which is "micro arc oxidized." I understand that TMoUS is only selling the gradient anodized model. We shall see.
Anyone else with an idea about the likely performance of that unlocked international model on TMo AWS?
Here's the answer to my question from Myriam Joire (@tnkgrl) of @Engadget, via Twitter:
"@malcontent510 the Euro version won't. The US version will. Both are tri-band, one without AWS."

it would be silly. The only difference should be the tmobile branding and bloatware. I thought the idea of only three models is to reduce the number of phones you have out there.
TWO different models of the One S: PJ40110 / PJ58100
I am hoping that there is no difference, but I was just quoting what Myriam from Engadget told me. I have since learned on Wikipedia that T-Mobile's HSDPA frequencies (namely "1700 MHz/2100 MHz UMTS AWS") are not specifically listed as covered by the antenna in the international version. The appropriate frequencies may, in fact still be covered, but according to both Negri Electronics and GSM Arena, the unlocked international version does not list them.
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100
I hope this is either not the case or not a show-stopper.
Edit: I now see a 3/12/2012 article from Engadget which indicates there are actually TWO distinctly different ONE S models:
HTC PJ40110
HTC PJ58100
WTF?
So if I buy a One S from the UK, will I only get edge? Or 3G? Thanks! Hoping to buy this phone in December when I'm due for an upgrade

Ok, sorry for going off topic a tad here but, can you (malcontent510 or anyone who knows of this) link your source for that info...for if it is true then I now have to go back to the drawing board for my idea on which phone I will be getting soon.

No. Unfortunately, the international model (including the one mentioned above) sold by Clove does not cover the 1700MHz frequency -- the TMobile US AWS frequency. The end result being that this phone would not support HSPA on TMo.
OK sorry for being off topic, but I'm a bit confused. The One S will or will not support SD/SIM Cards? Because isn't the SD/SIM your phone number? That confuses me. And is there even a difference between SD and SIMs? Thanks! Again, sorry for the off topic. If you want me to I will create my own topic.
So. I may be leaving Sprint and my Evo 3D behind to go to T-mo. I was planning on grabbing an unlocked ONE S. I am not experienced with unlocked gsm phones coming from Sprint and all...
Expansys shows 850/900/1900/2100.
If I understand correctly, t mobile 3g is on the 1700 band. 4g is on the 1900 band. So we would get 4g (hspa+) but not any 3g...
I was planning on the gradient metal version. I don't want to get stuck with a ceramic blue version from T-MOBILE...

SIM and SD is not the same thing at all. SD cards (in this case micro SD) are for storage.

That's interesting considering the international model and US model carry the same Qualcomm chip. In theory both phones should support the same bands.

[Q] No HSDPA 900mhz on Evita

Hi everyone!
I just buy a HTC One XL (Gray model) 16gb. The specs says this phone supports HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 but my carrier (DIGITEL Venezuela) is 900 and the phone only works in 2G.
Another important issue (i think) is when i go to the testing area (*#*#4636#*#*), in phone information, when i go to the menu and select select radio band there is only 2 options, automatic and USA Bands. (probabilly i need JAPAN Bands o Europe Bands)

Any have this problem? A radio update can solve my problem (i use ATT, Telstra and Vodafone Radios, but without luck)?
I search the forum, but i cannot find any thread with this same issue.

Did you happen to buy the at&t version? If so, that might be why, because the at&t version only supports 850/1900/2100 for HSDPA. You can see the differences in their spec sheets.
HTC One XL
AT&T One X
If you didn't buy the at&t variant, it might just be a case of having the wrong APN settings entered in the device.

It isn't the at&t model, those have the at&t logo above the display instead of the HTC logo. I'd triple check your APN settings, call your carrier and make sure they're correct, and make sure they do use the right frequency.

I've checked APN settings. That not the problem. Before this phone, I use a Optimus 2x (works in 900 edge/hdspa) and took the APN settings from here.
I'm pretty sure is a radio issue.
I don't think the radio is the problem, the radio just makes use of the hardware, regardless of the carrier. For example, I can use an at&t radio and get great LTE speeds even though at&t use entirely different frequencies than my carrier.
Sent from my Evita
Well... if you see my first post, I can't have a option to select a radio different than USA Band, and my phone suppose is the international version.
if not a radio problem, is a hardware problem?
I test with another carrier (movistar 850mhz) and works in 2g and 3g
Sent from my HTC One XL using XDA Free mobile app
That's normal, see my screenshot, I have the same options.
The difference being that the frequencies aren't listed for you. Have you contacted your carrier yet?
Sent from my Evita
Yes, i spoke with a support guy and he give me the same APN and the bands supported by the carrier (900 GSM/UTMS and 1800 LTE)
I feel stuck now...

I personally think it's an issue at your carrier's end.

It's a issue in this particular phone? Could be a problem with the range of the band?
I have my old phone (LG Optimus 2x) and works in this band with this same carrier with the same simcard.
I really don't know then, short of the phone actually being the at&t model but having a retro-fitted standard case I'm out of ideas.
