HTC HD2 UK Release on US 3g

I've been searching and doing some research over the past few days, but I'm still learning. I contacted eXpansis about purchasing a HD2 on release and asked them if it would work on a the us 3g (at&t) system. They promptly said no. This is where my confusion sets in. In reviewing the bands that are supported by the phone:

It shows the bands that at&t uses for 3g 850 and 1900. But in the specs listed in the screenie the 850 and 1900 are listed under GSM, What I need is the 850 and 1900 bands listed under HSPA/WCDMA correct? So the phone would function for voice calls etc, but data would be null or extremely limited correct?
Also this is a hardware requirement, not rom upgradable?
Topic 2: I may start a new thread for this as others have probably gone before me.
It seems the HD2 is destined for TMOUSA in q1 of 2010. Can I port this phone to at&t services? This would require the sim unlock,SPL (not sure what this is) unlock and a radio rom flash?

First: the unlocked HD2 will still get AT&T data on EDGE speeds. that's what the GSM is. it'll pick up EDGE on all 4 of those bands. you're right, you need the 850/1900 bands under the HSPA/WCDMA bands. so therefore, the Euro unlocked HD2 won't get 3G on AT&T's network here.
Second: you could get the phone unlocked from T-MO USA, and you'd only have to SIM unlock it. it's your choice if you wanna flash a HARD SPL and a new radio and ROM. all you need to do in order to use it on AT&T's network is get it SIM unlocked. but you still won't get 3G on AT&T, since T-Mo and AT&T use different 3G bands.

I'm not too familiar with the exact speeds, but I know that EDGE speeds definitely won't be fast enough for tethering. the main reason why I wouldn't go to T-MO is because of their lack of 3G coverage.
and yes, 3G is possible over the 1900 bandwidth. T-Mo uses the 2100 band, but only because that was the only band available to them when they opened their 3G network. T-MO USA is was the last major US carrier to adopt 3G, and are therefore way behind in their development of it. while AT&T, Sprint and VZW are already beginning to develop their 4G networks, T-Mo is still trying to broaden their 3G coverage

hey man don't worry about it. and it's not really for sure that AT&T won't get it. they lose exclusive rights to the iPhone next year (I think. could be 2011 too tho...) but there's always a chance that they could pick up the HD2. I didn't jump the AT&T ship for the tp2, but if AT&T doesn't get it then I might actually leave.

you're right, UMTS and 3G are the same thing. UMTS is basically normal 3G, while HSDPA is actually more along the lines of 3.5G.
I'm not too sure about what you're asking, but if you're wondering if, since the AT&T Tilt2 utilizes tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100), will the HD2 be able to run AT&T's 3G, then the answer, sadly, is no. this is simply because AT&T does not use the 2100 band, only the 850/1900 bands. the reason they usually make their phones with tri-band 3G frequencies is so that their subscribers can get some 3G coverage when they travel abroad (whether it's to another state or out of the country.) adding another 3G band allows their subscribers to have more 3G coverage, particularly if they travel out of the country. it all depends on whether the state/country they go to utilizes the 2100 band.

rom won't help, since it's a hardware antenna (and software) limitation.

European Sensation works on USA T-Mobile?

On the Engadget Mobile podcast this weekend, Myriam stated that the European Sensation works on T-Mobile USA 3G.
Is this true?
Looking at the bands, that is not correct...
Is she mistaken?

5. Network bands in regions other than Europe and Asia Pacific may be different, depending on the mobile operator and your location. Please check with your mobile operator.
What's not perfectly clear is whether the European models actually include AWS. Given the recent fiasco with the G2x we won't really know until someone actually tries it.

Didn't know that. Based my comment on the OP question, which implied it hadn't been tested.

Peter Rojas at gdgt.com is also testing the European HTC Sensation and he said he is getting HSPA speeds on his T-mobile sim.

I've never listened to the engadget mobile podcast before. that does not sound like a girls voice.

Peter Rojas also said that his AT&T SIM is only giving him EDGE. I was hoping the international version would also have the 1900 MHz band at the least (like the Tmo Vibrant).

I thought she may have misspoken or perhaps it's only on Edge and she didn't realize.
I just wanted to make sure because I thought T-Mobile needed 1700 MHz which isn't on the list of supported frequencies.

Yes Myriam is a female. Though check out samnada's link and you'll see why she doesn't sound like you might expect. She sometimes speaks about her "spouse" on the show as well, without saying husband etc.

Or will the two devices be exactly the same with just different packaging?
(For example, what about the charger cable -- will it be a European plug?)

TMO AWS uses 1700/2100. So, it actually is listed, just in the shorthand notation.

My biggest hesitation is wanting a US warranty. I'd rather wait another week to get that. I would expect the charger to have a European plug, but adapters are dirt cheap, so not a big deal on that.

If you don't mind paying the extra couple of hundred dollars to buy the imported European model, then go ahead and buy it now. I think it might be worth saving your money and just buying it from T-mobile when it comes out next week.

Whoa, wait a tick. Is that right? UTMS 1900 MHz? Is that the US Tmo version? If so, it should work on AT&T's 3G for those who have coverage in that band. Chicago certainly does. This is why the Vibrant works on AT&T's 3G.

It is the box for the Sensation 4G. As far as I know T-Mobile US is the only company calling it that. According to what the box says, it should work on AT&T's 1900MHz band for 3G once the phone is carrier unlocked. If the box has bad information on it, then it might not work. Once the phone is actually released and tested, hopefully we will know for sure at that point.

On the previous page it states someone tried an ATT sin card and only got edge.

Galaxy S 4g with AT&T 1900 3G Band?

Hey all,
I know the Vibrant has AT&T's 1900 3g band.
Can anyone confirm if the Galaxy S 4G also have the same AT&T 1900 3g band?
What sucks is that these bands are typically not listed in the specs but it's always a pleasant surprise when a t-mo phone has the AT&T 1900 band.

the s4g doesnt have the full 3g band hence why it goes from hsdpa to edge and not switch to 3g as it actually lacks the band for it .....

Joel, what did you end up doing?
Can the SGS 4G use 4G on AT&Ts network?

I was at one point able to get Straight Talk 3G working on the 1900 band when I used to live in TX. This was using ATT's network so it is definitely possible.
However a word of caution: from my experience in some areas ATT uses 850 for 3G, which the SGS4g does not support (edge only).

Got my sgs 4g unlocked and tested on at&t sim card ,3g worked with no problem (chicago area)

The unlocked version of this phone does include umts 1900 band so it can pickup 3g signal on that frequency.
On the back of the phone it says it clearly.

Bought from tmobile with no mention of ATT BANDS in the specs. Rooted, unlocked and was able to pick up 3g in Dallas,Tx on Att.

I have unlocked mine and had 3g on at&t for a while (brothers at&t sim) got regular 3G speeds as well. Its crazy huh?

why on earth would u do this less theres no t/simple mobile I had att on my 3g vibrant for a while yeah it said it got 3g but it SUCKS espacially indoors thats why att used the other frequency to get indoor "penetration"

Yes the SGS4g will run on ATT's 3g band. You won't have 4g though.
I actually used mine on ATT for almost 2 weeks lol

If a carrier support 4G on 1900mhz band would I get 4G without problems??

Since this morning, I've been picking up HSPA from AT&T on my SGS4G. Until today it always displayed the 3G icon and the network info said UMTS.
Today I started picking up HSPA. Although crappy speeds, it's HSPA
I have no idea what happened overnight but the network has changed.
By the way, I'm in Wilmington, DE

[Q] Will the Unlocked One S support T-Mobile AWS?

From what I've read, I believe the answer is "close but no cigar." Am I right? Or should we expect this device to work pretty well at grabbing onto HSDPA signals, but with a little higher battery drain, since the radio would have to work harder?
I have been considering pre-ordering an unlocked, black HTC One S (MAO model) from either Negri Electronics or Expansys, but I don't want to waste my time & money if this phone is, quite literally, a non-starter on the T-Mobile US network.
I'm a former CDMA subscriber and I've only been with TMo for 8-9 months. This would also be my first unlocked phone purchase, so thanks in advance for any insight you guys can offer.

I'm just going to wait and buy it from T-Mobile. Yeah I'll pay full retail but I'll sell my old phone to cover most of the cost; that's kind of how I do my upgrades! I just don't want to worry about it not working. I think it needs 1700 and 2100 bands for 3G/4G to work.

@unclespoon - I hear you, but I'm interested in the black model, which is "micro arc oxidized." I understand that TMoUS is only selling the gradient anodized model. We shall see.
Anyone else with an idea about the likely performance of that unlocked international model on TMo AWS?

I don't see any reason why the International version will not support AWS band. Both phones have the same qualcomm chip.

it would be silly. The only difference should be the tmobile branding and bloatware. I thought the idea of only three models is to reduce the number of phones you have out there.

TWO different models of the One S: PJ40110 / PJ58100
I am hoping that there is no difference, but I was just quoting what Myriam from Engadget told me. I have since learned on Wikipedia that T-Mobile's HSDPA frequencies (namely "1700 MHz/2100 MHz UMTS AWS") are not specifically listed as covered by the antenna in the international version. The appropriate frequencies may, in fact still be covered, but according to both Negri Electronics and GSM Arena, the unlocked international version does not list them.
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100​
I hope this is either not the case or not a show-stopper.
Edit: I now see a 3/12/2012 article from Engadget which indicates there are actually TWO distinctly different ONE S models:

HTC PJ58100
WTF?

So if I buy a One S from the UK, will I only get edge? Or 3G? Thanks! Hoping to buy this phone in December when I'm due for an upgrade

@invasion2 - that is what I've been asking and which seems to remain an open question. Other than Myriam's tweet (above), no one has attempted to directly answer that question.

Ok, sorry for going off topic a tad here but, can you (malcontent510 or anyone who knows of this) link your source for that info...for if it is true then I now have to go back to the drawing board for my idea on which phone I will be getting soon.

FWIW, I also refer you to the gradient anodized model which was featured in the leaked video of 3/27/2012 from a YouTube poster who said his unbranded [pre-release] phone was a T-Mobile model.

No. Unfortunately, the international model (including the one mentioned above) sold by Clove does not cover the 1700MHz frequency -- the TMobile US AWS frequency. The end result being that this phone would not support HSPA on TMo.

OK sorry for being off topic, but I'm a bit confused. The One S will or will not support SD/SIM Cards? Because isn't the SD/SIM your phone number? That confuses me. And is there even a difference between SD and SIMs? Thanks! Again, sorry for the off topic. If you want me to I will create my own topic.

So. I may be leaving Sprint and my Evo 3D behind to go to T-mo. I was planning on grabbing an unlocked ONE S. I am not experienced with unlocked gsm phones coming from Sprint and all...
Expansys shows 850/900/1900/2100.
If I understand correctly, t mobile 3g is on the 1700 band. 4g is on the 1900 band. So we would get 4g (hspa+) but not any 3g...
I was planning on the gradient metal version. I don't want to get stuck with a ceramic blue version from T-MOBILE...

SIM and SD is not the same thing at all. SD cards (in this case micro SD) are for storage.

That's interesting considering the international model and US model carry the same Qualcomm chip. In theory both phones should support the same bands.

Style vs Pure Edition for T-Mobile US

I find it rather odd that the US-bound Pure Edition doesn't support 1700 MHz for TMOUS, yet the international Style version does.
That being said, it's looking like both versions support all the other bands that TMOUS uses. So unless I'm missing something, that would mean all TMOUS users should be picking up the international version, not the US version.

3G (HSPA) - Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz)
4G (HSPA+) - Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz)
4G LTE - Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz), Band 12 (700MHz)
And the US Pure Edition has the following Bands :

Except I (like some other people) live in an area where 1700 MHz is in use (no refarmed 1900 MHz here) and the LTE isn't solid yet. So if I get the Pure Edition, I'm going to be stuck jumping between 2G and LTE depending on where I'm standing... lol.

Yeah, I imagine for a lot of people it won't be a problem. But until they refarm around here, I'd be stuck on 2G half the time.
But if I can get my hands on the international version instead of the US version when it comes out, I won't have to worry, since it seems to have *all* the T-Mobile bands.

I appreciate the thought, but you are of course correct. Thinking I may just wait and see if maybe the refarming effort makes it to my area before the phone comes out. Since it's supposed to be mostly done by end of year, and I'm in an area that gets at least a little love from T-Mobile, perhaps it'll time out right for me.

Yeah I won't be getting good LTE signal in my area but hopefully the network I'm with are going to be doing some work on it. Its just a waiting game really lol. It always seems like every area I move to has crap signal haha.

Hmm...I used the site willmyphonework.net to test out both versions and I found a little difference. The global version supports both 1700 & 1900 MHz on 3G speed. Other than that, both are the same for LTE & 2G and work perfectly. Can anyone help me translate this into English and tell us which is more beneficial?

Yeah, that was what I was getting at. Both versions seem identical as far as what T-Mobile needs, except for that 1700 MHz on the international version. Seems odd to me that they'd leave something like that out for the US version.

Does the additional 1700 MHz band mean better coverage for Tmobile in the US, or does Tmobile not use that one?

They use 1900 MHz for their refarmed HSPA+ areas, but there's still many areas (like mine) that use 1700 MHz for that.

AFAIK much more of their coverage uses 1700 than 1900.

True. 1900 is only as recent as their refarming, whereas 1700 they've been using for quite a while.

If you buy the international rather than the US are you going to be less likely to get tmobile wifi calling and volte with an update?

What's the point in Motorola making two versions in the first place? If all versions are sold carrier free, the LTE bands should be turned on for each carrier worldwide. Qualcomm modems support any band and frequency so long as the device has the correct firmware to leave them open.
In my opinion, it would probably be best to purchase the Pure (US) Edition to make sure it will work on all carriers in the US. After that I would root and turn on the 1700MHz frequency. Seeing how huge this issue will probably become, I'm sure someone will figure this out and post a guide on the forums. You may be best off waiting to see if this is the case.
Btw, my personal choice in this situation would be to switch carriers to AT&T or even Verizon, for the better coverage. Since Wifi Calling is supported natively when Marshmallow inevitably is released for these devices, there shouldn't be too much of a downside for anyone switching from TMO anymore (so long as carriers don't block out the wifi calling capabilities).

True that we will have WiFi calling via Marshmallow. It already works in stock betas that have been tested with other devices. No need for a separate all from T-Mobile.
But, how can 1700 be turned on in the US version, if the device does not have a 1700 radio? Since 1700 is not in the spec of the US version. It may not have a 1700 radio to activate.

All of the frequencies use the same radio. So if a phone is LTE capable, then it has all of the bands available. Lot's of times carriers will only activate the specific bands that are needed for their networks to make it harder to switch companies.
Here is a generalized guide for all qualcomm SoCs. This should work in theory, but again, nobody has been able to test it on the Moto x yet.
