Lack of Garmin and Skype, downside of Android... - Android Apps and Games

I am tempted to switch from Windows Mobile to Android but I still see that there is no software for Garmin maps (offline maps) and also there is still no Skype Full for Android.
This last issue, that lack of a full skype client for Android smells fishy... Why is Skype not developing a Skype client for Android??? It is against Google's philosophy... Did Google sell his soul to the big Communications corporations and is banning a full Skype?
Also, is there a program like MyMobiler for Android? Mymobiler is a desktop program that allows you to control your phone from the PC watching your phone's screen in the PC monitor.
Another question: since Android is based on Linux, is it possible to run PC Linux programs directly on an Android phone just as you can on the new Maemo?

From what I know no, but I could be wrong
Personally I like Droid Phones better then Win Mobile ones. I can't seem to put my Droid phone down. I am always tweaking or messing with new apps(and I only have a mytouch). Plus with the new Google navigation who needs Garmin? Also if your not wanting to get a droid phone because of it not fully supporting skype, and it not having garmin(which I don't really like) then your missing out!

You won't be able to run PC-program on android because it's a different platform (PC == x86, x86_64; android phones== arm ). You'll have to compile them for arm. General speaking it's possible to port apps. But you'll have to change some stuff.

I come from Windows Mobile, so I might shed some light...
There are a few Offline Maps apps... For example, Maverick... it has very good ratings. There are others too.
About MyMobiler... It's great... you can check this out, it's similar...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557717
By the way, I like my Android better than my WM. I own a Cliq, and I must say that I love it. Waiting for the custom ROMs.

Thank you for the responses.
I was intersted in being able to view my phone from my PC, actually.
The thing of not having offline maps is a big issue. Usually if you need a map, most likely you are in the middle of nowhere without 3G signal...
Maverick... Does that support Garmin maps?
Thank you!

There is also a program called Nimbuzz which recently got updated and allows making VOIP calls over Skype.

there are tons of offline mapping programs. Motonav, NDrive, Co-Pilot, and Papago x5 to name a few.

Maverick caches maps you've already viewed for later offline use. they also have a guide about using some software to save google maps/bing maps/open street maps, which you can check here. http://www.trekbuddy.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=464&start=545
The other apps mentioned above use their own "real" offline maps.
But from what you're asking I assume you already have a Garmin map purchased that you're looking to use on Android? Then I would recommend looking at what kind of maps these apps use and maybe finding a way to convert your map to be compatible with one of those apps.
As for Skype then yes there's a "lite" official version out there but it's far from great. Nimbuzz has been my favorite so far. Also, you can always look into using Google Voice as an alternative, it integrates nicely with the OS.

Is there any word that Garmin will develop an app for Android (like Garmin Mobile XT for WM)?
I use my phone as a navigation often and no other map providers cover my area (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia,...) as good as Garmin does. I'll change from my HTC HD to an Android device when they do it...

I use mapdroyd it don't have nav but has all the maps u want in any country. I've got the whole earth on mine.

There's already a Garmin app for Android, but it can only be used on Garmin's own Android phone, the Garminfone. If they put it in the market and sold it separately, no one would buy the Garminfone, so they aren't likely to do that at least for a while.

fing is no longer work on skype. I don't know if there any client will work on Skype.
I still looking for offline GPS client. I tried few of them. None of them are working well on v2.2 N1. I am going to try co-pilot v8.2.!!!
SKYPE, I love to have it back.!!!

And that's why I have my HD2. I get WinMo and Android both on it. Best of both worlds. There are some apps on the WinMo that I can't live without, I'll probably be sticking with my HD2 for a while.

How can you have 2 OSes on your PDA?

Since this thread started, Garminfone (aka Nuvifone A50) has been released. As well as the A10 in Europe.
I own it (Garminfone). Coming from
Blackberry I am very impressed. It is only 1.6 Android, but they customized it with pinch-zoom etc.
The maping in North America & Europe is exceptional (I have both).
I can confirm it can be rooted, I've already done mine. I am having trouble getting SuperUser status though (newbie).

I've got the same configuration: HD2 with WinMo e Andrid (port from Desire HD).
Would you be so kind to tell me with are the best applications, according to you, for respective operative systems? One never stops to learn..... ;-)
Thanks!

HTC's built in navigator with offline maps
In latest Android issue (the one with Sense for HTC Desire HD) there is a built in GPS Navigator that caches most used map on your SD, so that you don't need to connect to the internet all the time.
May be the solution for many of you. Check out the port to HD2 (20/09/2010) on this forum if interested.
Cheers.

Hi, there are GPS maps of Argentine only for Mapdroid (without navigation) and NDrive (you must pay for it).
NDrive 10 is nice, but I noticed some problems with the maps, nothing important but Garmin maps are better than NDrive for Argentina.
Nimbuzz for replace Skype, Fring don,t work anymore.

of course not, nobody on here knows how to fix anything! I've been looking all day for an answer as to why route 66 7 keeps telling me that there isn't enough memory to load the map and then shuts down, nobody knows. Plenty of threads from like 2006! but nobody knows! AHGHHHHHHHH!!!!! I probably won't get a decent answer for that anytime soon either. Good luck man! and sorry bout this.

You need to buy an SMARTPHONE map for your location
I was looking for GPS software myself a while ago. What I finally decided on was GPSDash (http://wimobi.com/gpsdash/overview.sph2.php?pid=sph2). What I liked was the ability to use custom maps, which are easily made with Google map downloader (for either satellite maps or street maps)
You have to register both to get full functionality and there's no navigation function, but it works well enough for dataloging and knowing exactly where you are.
Aside from that, I also recommend the Google Maps application for smartphones if you have a data plan. It ties with your GPS and, even if you don't have a GPS, gives you an approximate location based on cell tower triangulation.
One more site to mention is http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfw.html. I stumbled across it looking for j2me apps for an old Nextel phone I have. There's lots of smartphone apps there, but I haven't tried most of them.
GPSVP is free too

Have you tried the Windows Live Search? It includes Maps, Driving Directions, From-To-Reverse Route, and many other little features. Maybe not as powerfull as the paid GPS softwares, but surely has got me out of trouble on the road many times. I can post you link if you care to see it, or just search for "Windows Live Search". PDA / Mobile | Windows Mobile 6.5 (wm 6.5) | 240MB
Windows Mobile is a compact operating system combined with a suite of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. Devices that run Windows Mobile include Pocket PCs, Smartphones, Portable Media Centers, and on-board computers for certain automobiles. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows, feature-wise and aesthetically. Additionally, third-party software development is available for Windows Mobile. Originally appearing as the Pocket PC 2000 operating system, Windows Mobile has been updated multiple times, with the current version being Windows Mobile 6.1 (Windows Mobile 6.5 is due for imminent release as at 14 July 2009).
Common features:
Windows Mobile for Pocket PC carries these standard features in most of its versions:
* Today Screen shows the current date, owner information, upcoming appointments, e-mail messages, and tasks.
* The taskbar shows the current time and the volume.
* Office Mobile a suite of Mobile versions of Microsoft Office applications
* Outlook Mobile comes with Windows Mobile.
* Internet Explorer Mobile is an Internet browser developed by Microsoft for Pocket PC and Handheld PC that comes loaded by default with Windows Mobile and Windows CE for Handheld PC.
* Windows Media Player for Windows Mobile.
* Client for PPTP VPNs.
* Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) which in mobile phones allows attached computers to share internet connections via USB and Bluetooth.
Hardware platforms:
Windows Mobile runs on multiple hardware platforms including Pocket PCs, smartphones, Portable Media Center, and automobiles. These hardware platforms did not always exist from the inception of Windows Mobile.
Pocket PC
The Pocket PC was the original intended platform for the Windows Mobile operating system. These devices consisted of both standalone Pocket PC devices without mobile phone capabilities, and those that included mobile phone capabilities. The most current name of Windows Mobile intended for use on Pocket PCs is officially "Windows Mobile 6 Professional" for devices with mobile phone capabilities and "Windows Mobile 6 Classic" for devices without mobile phone capabilities.
Smartphone
The Smartphone became the next hardware platform after the Pocket PC to run Windows Mobile, and debuted with the release of Pocket PC 2002. Although in the broad sense of the term "Smartphone", both Pocket PC phones and Microsoft branded Smartphones each fit into this category, it should be noted that Microsoft's use of the term "Smartphone" includes only more specific hardware devices that differ from Pocket PC phones. Such Smartphones were originally designed without touchscreens, intended to be operated more efficiently with only one hand, and typically had lower resolution displays than Pocket PCs. Microsoft's focus for the Smartphone platform was to create a device that functioned well as a phone and data device in a more integrated manner.[6] The current name of Windows Mobile intended for use on Smartphones is officially "Windows Mobile 6 Standard".
Portable Media Center
The Portable Media Center was a device that focused on integration with Microsoft's Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player to allow users to carry their media libraries with them on the go. The Portable Media Center was officially introduced in 2004, and ran a modified version of Windows Mobile. These devices became the predecessor to Microsoft's Zune, and after 2006 Microsoft discontinued the project in favor of the latter.
Automobiles
Microsoft Auto is the name for Microsoft's operating system that facilitates multiple functions in automobiles including communication, entertainment, information systems. Windows Mobile for use in automobiles is the latest platform for the operating system, and was introduced by Microsoft in February 2006 at the Geneva International Motor Show. Microsoft Auto comes in two different versions. The Basic version includes a Bluetooth connectivity and USB interface for music playback. The Standard version includes this also, but additionally it features a built-in GPS, GSM phone, and security features. The Microsoft Auto hardware specification includes a 300 MHz ARM processor, 32 MB of RAM, and a microphone.

Currently, I have 23001, 23004, 23007 and 21925.
21925 is from the MS's experimental branch. It's got a LOT of GUI changes, massive changes, but it's a little unusable at the moment.

They do have the transparent bars, it's just that Ivan's theme in JustHome disabled the transparency. If you put a new theme on it, then they can be transparent.
And yea, I say this thread is perfect for WM6.5 discussion, why the heck not?

Transparent bars never actually existed in Windows Mobile 6.5 at all, at least not true transparency. Each of the bars is a theme image, what gives it transparency is changing the Opacity of one of the theme images in photoshop or something, but still this will not equal true transparency. This is why in the Programs menu, you still cannot see the programs when they are under a translucent (semi-transparent) bar.
The ugliness will hopefully go away. That build family is just where they test everything to see whether it's a good idea or a bad idea.

Yea, why not.
As far as the typing predictive thing, I'm not sure what MS changed that caused it.
And yes, they're moving towards capacitive screens. (Which is what we use for the Android phones and for the iPhone.)

So should we expect anymore 6.5 ROMs from you, or is the kitchen the last thing?
I don't know. I don't want to get ahead of myself. I MIGHT be releasing a few "stock" ROMs and a few stripped ROMs based on the new SJK set I'm building, but after that, I might just start porting the kitchen to other devices only. (And I have to spend some time finding multi language packages.)

Google Maps Navigation (Beta)

Anyone know when this will be brought to our beloved Topaz?
http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/#p=default
It looks great.
I read an article about it yesterday but there is no date for a release. I think there will be no WM release till it's a stable release.
Just read carefully:
Google Maps Navigation is an internet-connected GPS navigation system with voice guidance. It is part of Google Maps for mobile and is available for phones with Android 2.0.
Wow. Looks fantastic. I did come across this a little while ago but I think that its someones own program that just uses Google Maps as a background.
I was told by a friend who has a friend who works for Google that there are currently no plans to port Google Navigator to Windows Mobile. They are looking into bringing it to the iPhone, and it's obviously going to be released for Android 2.0 devices, but that's it.
I really, really hope they change their minds...
Why does everyone hate Windows Mobile? iPhone and now Android get all the love, and we have to beg to get some of the nicer programs...
we just have to port android faster

I call shenanigans. The same was almost certainly said for every major new feature in the current google maps (even google maps itself), but then it all showed up for us windows mobile users too. It doesn't make good business sense for google to ignore part of the market/userbase.

Looking at his contributions to xda he certainly is not even close to being stupid.
igo8 costs a lot, pay even more for TMC traffic updates, and keep paying for updated maps. Google Navigation is free. Plus had street view feature which is not available in any other PND.
Google Navigation has already been submitted to apple for approval, so it is not a platform exclusive feature. Accept the fact, windows mobile is loosing respect. Even as a platform. Mio navigation is moving to android. TomTom has moved to linux already. Garmin has it's own platform. Windows CE hasn't recived any good updates for a long time. It won't be long before most of these cool navigation softwares will disappear from windows. I like my phone a lot.. but ocasionally I find myself compromizing. I can't even use my phone to it's full potential without using a custom ROM.
You are not really having an argument about googles release strategy, are you?
Google Maps Nav will come for WM quite soon. The fact that it was released now first for Adroid is not really a reason to argue here, is it?
For me windows mobile never again.
(Awaiting for a serious maemo.)

ok, but just to tip you on somthing it dosent matter what os, platform, manfacturer etc, you'll always have to do some sort of customization to get the best out of the product.
i just brought a mytouch 3g and to tell you the truth, ive done just as much flashing as my touch diamond 2 n i am far from satisfied with it. I hope htc continues to make ui's for android b/c they are surely turned wm into a dream.

What Do You Have On Your Wing or Herald

Just wondering what ROMS people have on their Wings & Heralds. .
What they have modded in their Wings and Heralds.
What programs you have installed on your phone.
Where they found their ROMS.
What they plan on flashing next.
And maybe a screenshot of the ROM they are using.
For me I chose Ace's Glass V. 10 ROM.

Hopefully we can share cab files here as well.
Cheers,

I just recently installed the Choic3s on my Wing...
http://thewingster.com/choic3s_1.aspx
I installed the one without any extras.
i then installed:
Pocketscreen
Bluetoggler
Google Maps
basic games
Spb Backup
S2U2
Omapclock/Omapclockplus
Set Volume
task manager 2
Still need to install Pandora, YouTube, Adobe Reader, BT Audio Tools, and Guitar Hero...
I wanna check out Flash Player 7 and CORE Player...
Personally I still use the Shav3d one from forever and a day ago...I have yet to find a 6.5 ROM that is as fast or bare bones out of the box.
I always install:
Marketplace
Office Mobile
Esmertec Java
Skype
Weather Watcher
Twobile
Pocketwit
Youtube
Clean RAM
Bing
Facebook
MySpace
Uno
Palringo
Midomi
ShortCAD
as well as some UI tweaks and such, like the honeycomb launcher.

Looks like I forgot Google Maps.. You dont happen to have the cab file to share, do you? Also, what does twobile do?
Im useing my own ROM running wm 6.5.1 23047 THANKS TO IVANMMJ Superjustkitchen! striped to my needs with spb mobile shell 3.5
Would you be willing to share your rom with XDA? Idk.. I use Megaupload to upload files.
Well, you can get Google Maps from google...just download it from them directly....and Twobile is just a twitter client, but it allows you delete your own tweets and search for users and stuff, but it looks terrible so for most twitter stuff I use pocketwit.

Honestly, I don't use many programs. I'm always flashing stuff too often to settle down with some apps!
But Opera Mini 5 is always a must for my Wing, and SkyFire is always good. Umm, PHM Registry Editor for editing the registry (duh, heh), and then yea, that's about it.
And some of my favorite games for the Wing are in the Games Section. I don't do too much gaming though.
Ah. Makes sense really.
I never thought about it like that. Not being able to settle down with any programs.
I'd like to know what programs and ROM Ivan is using right now too.

Hah I think Ivan uses his own ROM And Ivan owns a Android phone, so that's his primary phone...I bet he could tell you some great Andriod apps!
Oh and Pandora is of course awesome for the Wing, forgot that.
I love Pandora too though, I would also like to really see more mmorpgs, rpgs and more adventure games for the windows mobile like they did when WM was named pocket pc.
What games have you guys also played on your devices?
I had Syberia 1 & 2, Fade and Warspear. I think I may download and share em.

I wouldn't mind but about half of the apps that i cooked in the ROM are payed applications & the striped is so simple (because im a rookie in cooking) im sorry. i do want to work in the futer on a ROM i could chare with the community but im still learning how to cook and i haven't had that much time to work on it..
Although technically not a development thread, I'll allow this thread to stay here for now.
As far as what ROM I use, I have a G1 running a slightly modified version of Cyanogemod 4.2.5.
My Wing just gets flashed with whatever build I'm testing at the moment. (For example, right now it has 28002 WM6.5.3) (Yes, the numbers are right. )

Thanks.
You guys will have 28002 and all kind of goodies (massive changes in the packages) as soon as my Hermes testers finally flash that test I created over a week ago...

Thanks for keeping this thread open. You see I think that for most people that come here they'll need to see what people have flashed with. Also, you and Ace and other cooks can see what ROMs are popular.
I will also help moderate this thread and keep it on track.
OOOOHHHH Ivan that sounds awesome! I can't wait for a release of that!
My Wing
I am currently running Apreichner's FingerMe 0.2 WM 6.5 with the following added to the ROM after install:
Hero Clock
Office Mobile
Facebook
A few games for my daughter
LinkMgr
Microsoft My phone
MyCalculator
MyMobiler
Pandora
Skyfire
Wing Linux
With all programs loaded I am still at a healthy 17.92 MB free in storage and 13.05 MB free in Program memory. Working great. Only Skyfire has given me any sort of trouble so far. Love this ROM.
I have a few screen shots of the WM side of things but didn't realize that MyMobiler needed an active sync connection so I have no screen shots of the Android side of my phone. The Wing Linux version I am using is 0.4.1 I believe. Haven't downloaded the latest cab they just released days ago.
Thanks again to Apreichner for the slick ROM and to Darkstar for the hard work porting Android over to our Wing's. Love this site, been a watcher until now. Will always watch as long as I have my Wing.

Google Goggles

Hi,
i was wondering if there's such an/similar application for Win Mobile 6.5 (to be used with HTC HD2)
Thanks,
Not yet unfortunately (not from google anyway), although they say they plan to support other platforms (inc. windows mobile) in a future release (I guess once they've used it to enhance/promote the android platform for a while). They will probably come good on that as they did with voice search on their google maps app.

Thanks mate for bothering to answer. I guess all other forum users are only able to ask questions and none-to-very-few are capable of providing an answer!
Thanks again!
