winded emulator review request. - Touch Pro, Fuze General

hi all,
i am almost certainly getting this phone, but i am still very curious about it's ability to handle console emulators, specifically the NES emulator. i have a titan/mogul now which is damn near the perfect NES emulator since it has 2 buttons above the screen when held in landscape, has the button setup of a NES controller.
the only flaw with the mogul is that it can only support 2 simultaneous button presses....this becomes a problem in say a mario game, where you want to run and jump with precision(hold dpad left + b, then press a). i have learned to live with this, but i am worried that the touch pro might actually be worse when it comes to emulators....
will someone who has a TP please test a few NES or SNES games and answer my few Q's?.....PM me if you need an emulator or a few ROMs to perform the test.
since the TP doesn't have buttons on the top of the sceen, i think i'd end up playing the games in portrait with the dpad and the right 2 buttons as a&b(onscreen controls are notoriously sucky)....
1) is the emulator playable in this setup?
2) can the TP register 3 simultaneous button presses(a running jump in mario)?
how about with the keyboard slid out in landscape....
3) does 3 simultaneous button presses register?
4) with the TP being twice the resolution of the mogul, but only having a slightly more powerful processor, how do the emulators perform? i'm kind of worried about SNES/Genesis playability.....
Thanks.
yerp

Most emulators seem to work fine - I tested many. Those who don't are mostly stuck in irrelevant things (like the file requester!).
I haven't tested any simultaneous controls though (or in fact anything on NES/SNES).
PM me to see if I can help.

tip
you should consider keeping your current device on the side.
i found the tp not realy suited for fast paced games because of the lack of buttons, the inabilty to map the existing buttons, and the inability to effectively use the buttons. `real` buttons such on the wizzard and polaris i owned will kick the tp`s touch dpad`s behind with two fingures in the nose.

Hi,
Is there nobody that has had a working SNES emulator for the TP? I have tried some like PocketSNES but like someone stated above, you can't succesfully map the hardware keys. Anyway is there someone who has a tip for a good SNES emulator for the TP

ZX Spectrum emulator on Raphael

I am interested in buying the Raphael.
As i enjoy playing the ZX Spectrum emulator for ppc
(Pocket Clive, Fuse for ppc), i would like to know if anyone has tried this emulator with the Raphael....
Is the Raphael's keyboard working with the emulator??
Is the lack of hardware keys causing problems???
Is the emulator slow???
Thank you in advance for every answer.....
It actually runs pretty well. You cant use the hardware keyboard though; sliding it out causes it to hang rather than flipping it into landscape. I guess it only supports portrait. Unless you want to do some programming in BASIC though, the onscreen keyboard is good enough to navigate menus etc. The only hardware buttons you need are UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT and FIRE, so the buttons on the front are good enough if a bit close together.
I've got 5,090 games so I'm gonna have some fun with this. I'd suggest you install to storage card as the only directory you can use for roms is in the path it creates itself in Program Files, so obviously better where you have more space.
So in answer to your questions:
1. No, the hardware keyboard does not work
2. No, the lack of hardware keys does not cause a huge problem
3. No, it runs 100%, not too slow (nor too fast, and sound emulation is spot on too)
For anyone else who wants to try it, it's HERE
I would share my roms too, but I think this would be deemed as warez as I payed for them from HMV years ago (£10....bargain!) and also there's always that stipulation that if you download the ROMs you must delete them after 24 hours unless you either own the original game or bought the ROMs, (and therefore the respective license(s)).
Your answer was quite enlighting....although quite dissapointing...
I was dreaming of playing again my Zenobi adventures without using the stylus...
Anyway, do you find the on screen keyboard any better or larger in VGA screen -that the Raphael supports- than any previous 320x240 ppc screen??
Thanks again...
P.S. Have you tried the scummvm???
Does the keyboard work?
Any problems regarding the lack of hardware keys in the front????

Oh, that one again.. it's not true, you know.
Unless the game/application/product have been put in the public domain, made available as freeware, or is available as a demo/shareware/trial, or you own the license (as you mention) then downloading said product for any amount of time is technically piracy, regardless of if it is for 24 hours or not. The fact that it is "abandonware" does not mean it legal to download ROMs, even for "trial" purposes.
But isn't it OK to download and "try" ROMs for 24 hours? (MAME ROM FAQ)
I know you're not talking about MAME ROMs in this case, but the principles of copyright still holds. I also know you're not condoning piracy - just thought it worth mentioning this about the perceived legality of downloading copyrighted material for 24 hours.
So here I am coming to see what is new in "Raphael land 2008" and find someone is nearly as far back in personal computing as I was when I started. A ZX Spectrum Emulator!!!!
Hey - anyone got a ZX80 emulator?
If I can find the cassette tape backup - and if it still is readable - I have an old "Star Trek" game I wrote long time back. The stars twinkling outside the bridge of the Enterprise's view screen were my stellar achievement....
Mind I actually used to do statistical analysis in SOFOR (Southampton University's variant of Fortran IV) sitting in London at two in the morning because my computer budget lasted longer in the middle of the night. And I could actually get a console - instead of having to punchcard it and run it on a teletype terminal - that was an added bonus! Thirty years ago in 1978 to be precise.
I used scummvm with some success on my Wizard, Artemis & Tytn II, but as far as I am aware it doesn't support the hardware keyboard. I had to map the on-screen keyboard to a hardware button so I could use it while I was in game. Then again, that could have just been the Artemis as it has no hardware keyboard. Can't quite remember to be honest. Have to say I haven't tried it on the Touch Pro yet.
The Z80 keyboard in PocketClive is rather small too.
And one final thing about the legality of ownership of roms, as I said, I paid for my spectrum roms so I'm safe there. I do not condone illegal downloading of roms. Always believed you could 'legally' test them for 24 hours though. That's a new one on me.

Key Assign Problem (Morphgear+PocketGBA)

Hello, this is my first Post in this Forum.
I recently got a HTC Touch Pro and installed Morphgear and PocketGBA.
Now i have a Problem with assigning the keys propery..
I would like to use the Keyboard (W,A,S,D) for the directional pad (Up, Down, Left, Right).
But every key gets the same Keycode, in morphgear it is 229 and in PocketGBA its 00E5.
Now when i press a key in a game, every command (Up,Down,Left,Right) gets done at the same time.
Both emulatores worked fine with the Keyboard of the Tytn II.
I already searched in different Forums, Google etc. but could not get any answer.
It would be cool if anyone could help me with that.
Greetz!
Edit (Seems to be the same Problem here):

Face buttons/controller?
Hello,
Sorry to not have an answer for you but I am also considering this phone. I have a tilt and can't do without morphgear (which works fine for me using the buttons on the face of the phone).
I have a question for you: are you unable to use the controls on the face of the touch pro with morphgear? Or do you simply prefer the keyboard as a controller.
Any information on this is much appreciated...
Thanks!
I wrote a small application for Raphael which made it possible to map the following buttons in emulators (e.g. PocketSNES, Morphgear...etc) and some games possibly:
A, S, X, Z, 1, 2, -, =, backspace, enter, left, right, up and down.
Usage:
1. Download the cab and install.
2. Start Menu -> Programs -> Games -> Run "K for Raphael."
3. Launch any emulator and you can set the buttons mentioned above to keys in game.
Please note that this is just a workaround, as you can see the key code catched by the target application is not the actual key code of the hardware button. So, please remember to close this application when you no longer need it.
If you need more keys to be in the white list, please let me know.
I hope HTC can pay more attention to this problem. Nothing's more shameful than paying $800 for a full QWERTY device just for text messaging and web browsing.
Is it possible to have the keys send the code they are supposed to send? I'd like to run some dos games on some dosbox clone, but if they don't get proper keypresses it's useless?
hi there, im got an HTC touch pro too, but i downloaded PocketGBA and i cant install it, when i try to install it, it says installation was unsuccesfull... i dont understand why...
a frind got a HTC touch and it works with his phone..
why is that??
and sry for my english..!!!
thx
I am using MorphGear and it is really good. Especially now when we can use the keyboard!

I forgot to mention that you don't need to toggle TF3D to enable the keyboard mapping function.
Please ignore the TouchFLO 3D Toggle button. Thanks to the fact that TF3D almost consumes no CPU time when it's in the background. After some tests, I found the toggle nearly useless.
BTW... I'll try to spend some time dealing with the key code problem this weekend. I myself also got some games to play with DOS emulators. sigh...
cool, if you manage to get it working for all the keys, ill might donate a small amount if you give us your paypal, and maybe even some other people?
With the workaround listed above, what's the maximum number of action buttons you can currently have - besides the directional buttons on the keyboard?
Also - if you use that workaround, can you perform diagonal motion by hitting two buttons at once?
A, S, X, Z, 1, 2, -, =, backspace, enter, left, right, up and down
That is a total of 10 action buttons and 4 directional!

Thanks for clearing that up - that's awesome. I thought that portion of the post meant that the letter buttons REPLACED the 4 directional buttons. So I thought there might only be the 4 directional buttons and 2 action buttons.
What about diagonals - or pressing 2 buttons at once? Can the Raphael handle it?

just download a bunch and test them for yourself, or try and use the search function before asking
KforTouchPro is released
I figured out the way to let you map keys to their correct key codes. The problem lies in the built-in M5 IME, which intercepts virtual key codes sent by the OS without proper handling.
This release of KforTouchPro simply allows you to switch between M5 and your system default IME as the "preloaded IME" at run time.
Instructions:
1. Download & install the CAB.
2. To play emulators/games, click on the "Disable M5 IME" button of KforTP.
Unlike KforRaphael, you may close KforTP after disabling M5.
Congratulations, your hardware keyboard now talks directly to the M$ IME in correct key codes.
3. When you want your M5 functions back (auto-completion/auto-corrections), just click on the "Enable M5 IME" button. No soft reset is needed.
Afterall, I still didn't feel so good for the need to switch between two modes: gaming & typing. Maybe M5 & HTC should be responsible for this.
BTW.. I just put a relay IME between your current preloaded IME and the M$ default IME. Thus, it should be working even if the bundled IME is not M5.
Reminder: Don't forget to backup your device before giving it a try.
Updated GMT+8 6:41 PM: I am sorry for causing system crash for some users. The attachment was temporarily removed. Now I only get positive confirmation from traditional Chinese devices. I'll try to figure out the reason causing the crashes.

FPSECE 0.10 can be found on fpsece.net. The 0.10 is the newest version of the "First PlayStation Emulator for windows CE" (the one before is 0.96 - i know the version numbers are a bit squishy ...).
For information about how to set up FPSECE 0.10 go check i900frenchaddict on youtube. He has a lot of videos which help. But its for a TG1 so it might differ in some points. Maybe im going to record the same stuff for HD2.
In free version there is no G-Sen, Gamepad, Multitouch support for HD2
For the supporter version:
-Gsensor working with every HTC including HD2
-MSI BGP100 bluetooth gamepad working for the HD2 (and every device) without extra drivers
-The delay when you touch the screen is now fixed, no delay at all!
-Overlay in Tekken 3 are back!
-Multitouch is working now

Can you be a bit more specific about where we can find this emulator and about the games for it? I like it very much but I'm a bit noob to Windows Mobile so I will be glad to have a little more details on the subgect. Thanks in advance!
hey, no problem. i thought it was clear but i see i was wrong ... edit will follow in just a moment

Just read the manual or the other Fpsece thread; you need to configure the vol up and down button to play Tekken 3 because of the input delay.
Final Fantasy VII and VIII plays perfectly.
Go check http://www.youtube.com/user/i900frenchaddict especially http://www.youtube.com/user/i900frenchaddict#p/u/2/SVm1tg6H90Q. It helped me to understand how the setup works.

Not sure if it helps but these are my *.ini's
How do I use these .ini files for my phone?
I have everything working on my HD2 but I battle to play the games because I cant configure the controls even with the help of the video's.
One question that I cant figure out is how to bring back the FPSE menu once you have activated the game in landscape? I have to pull out my battery and restart to "exit"...

Tap the very top right hand corner of your HD2 screen to flip it back to portrait.
Note: Tekken 3 may bring problems in displaying the overlays of the onscreen buttons due to its specific patch (that can be removed but the game may be slower, see tekken3 in the gamelist file and see tekken3 config file if you want to try removing this patch)
So if you have difficulties in setting the overlays, don't try with tekken 3 at first, try any other game, Tekken 3 is the only one with that kind of overlay problem
(I would say a not too fast RPG is good to learn how to use the onscreen buttons. And once again, HD2 users will have to wait for Schtruck to work a little more to get fast and responsive onscreen controls since the capacitive screen and its bad compatibility with WinMo 6.5 has brought new problems including a big delay on the onscreen keys, that doesn't occure with a resistive screen)
The G sensor doesn't work on my HD2 ! Is there any plug in I have missed?
Its not a feature with the HTC HD2 yet.
I have driver 2 and wipeout working like a dream on my hd2, except the screen is far to sensitive and makes it impossible to drive.
Any settings to change this?
Why are there two threads on the FPSECE when most of the questions and replies in this thread are of the same type in the other thread?
basically this thread is for the gameplay showed in videos and for sure people will ask how it works if it doesnt for them.
later on i will give you guys a video of MediEvil 2 on HD2 but atm i still play with the setup. Hardware buttons doesnt have a delay but the game gets a bit laggy
Did someone get the G-sensor working?
nope, for gsen working under HD2 we have to wait for next version (ive read this somewhere, cant remember where).
See first post, ive added MediEvil 2 video
added a quick guide for those who really dont have a clue what to do with fpsece
FFVII is...not really working. The sound is cutted but the game speed is always at 61f/s.
But the big problem for me is the virtual pad. It responds very slowly and the multitouch isn't working at all.
I don't know if that because I don't have the good bios or else, but it's quite unplayable.
Someone have a clue ?
lets say it this way: there is no HD2 support at the moment but it will change soon. FPSECEs core is rewritten and there is support for the TG01 (g-sen) as far as i know. So 0.10 works much better than 0.96, so far i didnt have any problem to open a rom. my guess: still the problem is there are many different devices and this emulator depends on the hardware of a device (kind of screen, hardwarekeys, bluetooth for gamepads differs, etc.).
But somewhere on http://www.fpsece.net ive read about one of the guys of fpsece will get a HD2 soon and there will be support for it
Hum...I see, I misunderstand "multitouch screen" and "on-screen multi-touch button-assignment".
Then I'll wait for another release. FFVII will wait for me too ! ^^'

Why can't you just set some of your keys to toggle? Did this for FFVII and FFVIII and it works beautifully.

Thank you very much. I had come across the Pocket version of UAE, but an older version and was forward thinking enough to check 'sourceforge'.
The images look pretty good so far... downloading currently and will give it a try on the tube home... will have to look around for some legally free adf's on-line or whatever UAE uses to try it out, until I get home... where I have many stored on a DVD from the good old days.
Will update once I've given a try. Thanks again 'hasinasi' [^_^]

So! How did it go? I was the last Amiga owner among my friends i loved Amiga. Have you managed to get the Amiga running on you MoPhone?
interested in this...
I looked at the page and hmmm we can forget to use it on a non-stylus phone i think....
I tried this on my Athena and Universal
The emulator itself is pretty good but not without issues. For 640x480 devices there is no onscreen keyboard and the Leo/HD2 lacks a joypad so most games are going to be useless.
The Athena and Universal with their hardware keyboard were ideal for this emulator and I managed to play a few games quite well.
Some games like Frontier, Carrier Command, and Captive which are 99% mouse controlable should be playable using the stylus for mouse controls and speed should be good as well. Also a lot of the old music demos would be ok as well.
I shall give it a try at somepoint myself as I have one of those old Bluetooth joypads which I can try and use. will let you know how it goes if I get anywhere.
You can use LMTs multitouch gamepad as a dpad replacement. It is configurable and works in any app. It converts the input to keyevents. Have a look in the LMT thread for further details...
Did you guys get this to work on winmo 6.5?
I am not having luck with my tilt 2 so far.
Amiga Emulator Working Great for me with LMT controller
Pocket Ultimate Amiga Emulator is now working great for me on the old games I use to love. It runs at 640x480 and I use LMT v0.8x from this page of the LMT forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=629263&page=74
Get the 'x' version of that controller I link to -- it's on the page I link you to in the first post, "LMT v0.8x", that version is great because it includes a '2 mouse button' controller as well as the full gamepad. These 2 buttons rest down at the bottom of the screen and are out of the way of the emulator. Because they are not sitting on top of the screen I can play my favorite 'mouse games' from the Amiga now, such as 'populous I and II', and 'powermonger' and 'lemmings'. My favorite games were the mouse games so the '2 button controller' is fantastic.
Please give it a try -- I find PocketUAE to be now functional with LMT v0.8x.
TIPS: gapi driver mode gives a 'touchpad style' mouse experience, and dbi driver mode is 'stylus style', so I'd practice with the mouse in gapi mode before trying point+click dbi. I have mine set for dbi 320x480 full screen left hand side rotation so I can use the 2 mouse buttons on left side of screen and point with my right hand fingers. Have fun and good luck!
For a great place to get disks of games, google up "the game archives roms emulators" and choose the first link.
Now I'm off to find dos emulators so I can try and make 'dungeon keeper' work with this 2 button controller version of LMT v0.8x
PS: don't just get lmt v0.8x for emulators, it has FULL GLOBAL MULTITOUCH GESTURE SUPPORT on any screen you are in on the hd2, and if configured properly you can do some amazing things that no other smartphone of our caliber can do. It can close a foreground app with a double finger swipe, which for gamers means NO MORE BATTERY PULLING TO GET OUT OF A GAME.... It floats OVER gapi which is strong stuff.

SWEET....... now... time to fire up WING COMMANDER...... HAHAHAHAHA
...If this works as it should there are some amazing possibilities here.
It doesn't seem to allow for different mapping profiles for different games, just 1 generic mapping, but agree - lots of possibilities !
I'm gonna go work up some mappings for Ultima IV !
Ahh i tried to search for people discussing this and i didn't find anything and posted a topic lmao... some1 shared the link to here.
$2.99 tempting. Now while Wing Commander was already said.. Ill say another that I could see myself playing..
Shufflepuck Cafe and Bar Games!
Hrm.. Install Win95.. yes this could have some options..
Just bought it myself
been playing
commander keen
jill of the jungle
sim city 2000
monster bash
castle of the winds
daggerfell
Does this mean you could play Daytona USA on the xplay?
I remember playing Daytone USA in DOS mode back in the day.
Ok with the on screen mouse, I just got done playing Nukewar (Fun fun game)
Playing Bargames right now. Need to map the X to be the enter button.
Also learned the option use the dpad as an input toggle is worth using. Easier for those up down left rights in the game.
Profile mapping WOULD be nice.
Edit: Ok one flaw in this program.. How on earth can I map the space bar or the enter key to a button...? So many games play like this.
Could someone check Sensbile World Of Soccer 98, Manchester United The Double and Lous 1,2,3 ? How does it works ? I thinking about buying this emulator.

So far, every game I have tried worked without config. Also Any GoG game that uses dosbox works. (Oooo I forgot.. I can play Dungeon Keeper on android now)
ONLY issue I have seen be meh, is that I cant map enter or spacebar to a gamepad key. Also has sometimes an issue with screen rotation. (Gets stuck in landscape mode sometimes when I NEED it vertical while I type on keyboard) Minor gripe, but so far its solid.
Just contacted the dev of dosbox turbo with the comments from this thread. He said the ability to map enter and spacebar will be in the next release. Also I asked about the possible profile loading for those who needs "x" mapping for "x" game.
Oh god, if this thing can actually run daggerfall fullspeed I'm gonna cry. Did anyone try that? How does it run? And what about the controls? On andosbox it ran really slow, and I couldn't get some of the controls to even work.
Interesting, Managed to get a Windows 95 image booted, it crashed the explorer.exe but still started up.. http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=24936 to make your own win 95 image (if you dont just download a predone one)
This really is starting to look good. =D
Hello Everybody,
I'm the author of DosBox Turbo. One of the members here kindly pointed out this thread to me today and suggested I drop by.
Wanted to let you know that I'm sorry for leaving out the "Enter" and "Space" mappings, it just slipped my mind! But, the good news is, I'm finishing up a quick bugfix release (v1.2.1) and some of the new Xperia Play specific features I already have completed include:
Ability to map Enter & Space to an Xperia Button
Ability to see what current button mappings are w/o having to select each one.
Once I'm finished testing this release, I'll push it out to the Android Market (sometime on Mon or Tue).
I'd be very interested to hear your feedback/suggestions for new features, as I do not have an Xperia Play, so I'm just coding this stuff up without really having a chance to test it. Some of the new features I have planned for the very near future include being able to use the Analog touchpad on the Xperia Play as a true analog joystick, as well as supporting saving button/configuration profiles.
Cheers,
Gene
Thanks for taking the time to drop in and let us know what you have in the pipeline, i actually just bought your app earlier today and have been playing raptor call of shadows, im also looking around for other dos classics i missed when i was younger, the games i would never probably bother with on a pc haha.
the suggested improvements are pretty much everything i could ask for off the top of my head, keep up the good work.
Gene.. Question, Can one do a Ctrl+Alt+Del? Also later down the road, a "windows" key could be good.
Been fiddling with this booting of Windows 95 lol. Another thing that could be nice is a "reset dosbox" option in menu vs "exit" and reloading.

As far as I'm aware, DosBox proper doesn't support a reset function or CTRL-ALT-DEL (correct me if I'm wrong). I did a bit of research on this, and it seems to be somewhat difficult to implement (reference this thread over in the DosBox forums) for various reasons. On Android, it would be possible to kill the app and restart it via a button, but it wouldn't be much different than hitting exit and starting over. I'll look into a way of cleanly implementing such a feature in a future version if you guys feel it would be beneficial.
By the way, there is a thread over on the ASUS transformer forums with some people having success running Windows 95/98. I also recorded a video of an old version of DosBox Turbo running Windows 95. I apologize in advance for the poor video quality and lack of sound (I was using an old camera phone to record it).
Edit: I forgot to answer your Q. about the windows key. I'll add the windows key for you extreme users running Windows. =)

Sure! Happy to drop in an answer some questions. I'm a big RTS Fan (Warcraft II, etc). In case there are any other RTS fans here, I can certainly recommend playing Warcraft II and set the Mouse Tracking mode to "absolute" and in the Gesture Configuration map the Double-Click to "right click". This will allow you to tap once for left click, and double-tap for rightclicks to move units. Long Press and drag your finger to highlight units. Makes playing RTS games very comfortable on the Touchscreen alone.
