Quote Etiquette

I definitely spend more time reading in this forum than wriiting... usually on my Tilt. It's a great board with lots of contibutors, both big and small. Some people tend to post long replies (which is a good thing)... but one thing that becomes cumbersome is scrolling through all the quoted text just for a person to ask a one line question (which usually doesn't refer to the quoted text). The reason to quote is to refer to something the author said that is pertinent to your question or comment. In fact, if you can edit the quote to only the specific text you are referring demonstrates the ultimate in quoting skill. You see this often in Dutty's thread... God bless him. His ROMs are so wildly popular that the post count goes through the stratosphere in a matter of days. This makes it a pain in the arse to go back and find some tiny piece of information, partly because of the misquoting.
If you want to direct a comment towards an individual vice the collective, simply use the @ symbal. i.e. "@Dutty"
This is not a flame thread, as you may have noticed I didn't direct it at anyone. Just a request to make a high traffic board better. Thanks, I feel better... I'm going to go drink a beer. CYA
And BTW... please don't sticky this, we have enough of those already.

Sorry my meager attempt at humor after reading 1800+ posts in Dutty's latest. I even went back and cleaned on of mine up.
Now if you could just learn some thread etiquette....
In all seriousness, I understand everyone here gets their panties in a bunch when someone asks something off topic, but if you don't tolerate that sort of crap, then you won't have anyone but the same old hens sitting aroudn admiring your work.
If people hadn't put up with a little of my newbness, I wouldn't be rockin' a Dutty Tilt Touchflo rom on my phone and showing other new fans that you don't have to put up with ****ty AT&T roms!

Also cumbersome when there is a meaningless or non-existent title.
Maybe you or someone else could write up rules of titling.
I generally try to put in a title that is a brief abstract or summary of my post, or links the thought to the post I'm quoting.

Problem With Screen Timeouts on CM 4.2.11.1

I am having a problem with the screen timing out, and going black. This seems to happen regardless of whatever I am doing on the phone (texting, browing internet, etc) The touch recognition does not keep the display on, and the phone will go black right in the middle of my typing. the only way to keep the display on is press the menu button. Any advice? Its a clean install, just installed yesterday

@Chris....Have you rebooted your phone since you flashed the 4.2.11.1 upgrade? This happens to me every time I flash a ROM update for Cyanogen, but it is resolved after the first reboot. I would give that a shot.
@Shadow....Yet again a great example of why people are ditching XDA and moving on to other forums for their dev needs. Funny how number of posts somehow adds you to this elitist group of complainers.
@XDA....Can we please change the membership ratings? My proposal is:
Junior Member -1-50 posts
Member - 51-100 posts
Senior Member/Verified *****/I rule the world so you better know that prior to posting anything - 101+ posts
Feel free to pick one out of the 3 for the last category.....but I am reallying hoping for the second choice...cause it pretty much describes how most of your "Senior Members" act.
....And before I get flamed/suspended.....remember I said "most", not all.
oh damn, i thought i was in that forum... my bad. but thanks bwinger for answering me. yes, that seems to have worked.
You should try wiping and use the base rom and try cyan's rom again.
In settings change timeout to 2min or something higher.

Honestly, I don't think shadowch31 was out of line whatsoever. It's not being elitist to chastise others for not following simple rules. The OP is a selfish ass, who seems to be under the impression that this forum is dedicated to him and his problems alone. Like I always say, if everyone who had an issue with a ROM posted a new thread, this forum would be absolutely un-navigable. The CyanogenMod has nearly 10,000 posts. Assuming only half of those are issue-related, that would be 5,000 more threads scattered about this forum.
Maybe people aren't ditching XDA because others are putting them in their place. Maybe people are ditching XDA because of all the morons flooding the site with garbage. This is a development forum, not a personalized troubleshooting team for each user.
To the OP, stick to AndroidCommunity or a similar site. If you keep up this crap, you're not going to be welcome here for very long.
ironically most of the garbage on here is from ppl who flame lower ranking members. who gave you the authority to disrespect or even abate other members? Bottomline we ought to have more respect in here for all members. we all started as juniors...but besides that you are a loser if you waste your time arguing with people you don't even know anyway.

Oohhh a feisty one I see, makes it more enjoyable extinguishing your little flame there.
If this had not been his very first post (proving yet again why people should be forced to read the rules and learn what a search button is and it's function) and had it been posted in the correct thead which is ALWAYS on the front page here I would have answered happily. Also might help if this wasn't about the fifth post alone today that has been reported for being in the wrong place I MAY have been nicer.
Now as it happens the OP has held his hands up and said he posted in the wrong place and apologized which is fair enough and hopefully it will be removed and put into the right place where it is going to get the proper attention.
Now we come to you and your oh so inflated ego and possible super hero complex 'coming to the rescue of the weak and feeble' oh please! What's up didn't daddy pay you enough attention growing up? See we can all be a-holes now can't we, just some of us do it with flair

[Q] Sync MS MyPhone Calendar & Contacts on HTC HD2

Have searched but had no luck finding an answer. Can anyone help please ?
I have a HTC HD2 & I use MyPhone regularly to backup/sync events, messages and contacts.
I prefer to enter new calendar events on MyPhone, as it's easier to type the details in, and I can enter them quite quickly.
But there is NOWHERE near the functionality on the MyPhone website, as there is in the calendar-function of the phone itself..... eg: I cannot set an event to be recurring, or a "remind-before" alarm, etc, etc, using the MyPhone service.
The same can be said for entering new contacts using MyPhone. There simply aren't as many fields for entering details on the website UI, as there is in the phone itself.
So it seems pointless to use it at all. I fully understand that MyPhone is a generic system for backing-up details, over a wide range of phones that use WinMo, and each specific phone may have different fields to populate inside their specific contact or calendar functions.
Previous (Non-WinMo) phones that I've had (Like Nokias or SE's) have had their own specific utilities available for entering information on the PC, then sync'ing to the phone - and these incorporated all available entry fields, so that nothing was missed.... but MyPhone seems VERY basic in comparison.
So is there any other FREE programs I can use instead, to FULLY enter details in Calendar & Contacts, to then sync with the HD2 ?
Or do I have to go thru the process of adding ALL my contact/calendar events via the phone itself, if I want to populate ALL the relevant fields available????
Please Note: I DO NOT use address books or email programs, such as Outlook, that I can set up to sync. I have Win7 on my home PC which does not have Outlook or O-Express. I DO use Thunderbird for email, but don't have an Address Book saved, as I rarely email people - usually text only !!!

Maybe if you posted this is the HD2 Q&A forum, you would get an answer.
Reading the FAQ on the MS website for MyPhone would help you out, reading the help in MyPhone would help you out. There are so many options. Even posting the question in the WM Q&A forum would provide you with more people willing to help you. Double posting and getting mad because people are not helping you isn't exactly going to make people jump on here breaking their necks to help you out.

I'm not getting mad...... I'm not expecting to be spoon-fed.... but I DO expect SOMEONE, after 80+ views, and 2 days, surely SOMEONE would have some helpful suggestions for me ???
Thankyou for your input though.....
I think YOU should read the forum RULES, before jumping on your keyboard-warrior bandwagon, as they clearly state: " YOU WILL GET THE HELP YOU NEED HERE: ...............There will be more users reading your question here and willing to help, than in any other section of the XDA Forums...... It is NOT likely that your question will NOT get answered the first time it is posted here, but in the event that it doesn't, DO NOT GIVE UP! Some questions are harder to answer than others, even for the most experienced users, but you will have someone who is trying to give you the help you need! "
I don't think I was unreasonable waiting 2 days and then bumping to the top.
How about you spend less time criticising other users for their lack of skills and knowledge, and more time helping them and offering useful suggestions.
I would still appreciate any helpful suggestions from other members, if they care to share ???

My sincere apologies. I bow down to your superior intellect, in that I should misunderstand the terminology used.
On every other forum I have ever used, a Double Post is what happens when you (usually) accidentally post the same message twice, as 2 separate threads.... OR..... accidentally post a message twice in the same thread.
Bumping my post up to the top again is a common and expected thing to do in a forum.
Waiting 2 days for a response, before bumping/double-posting is not what anyone could call unreasonable.
The rules themselves say to NOT GIVE UP if you don't get a response. How else am I going to get a reponse, if I don't bump it to the top. YOU obviously didn't see/read my post the first time...as you didn't offer me your fountains of wisdom at any point in the last 2 days.
Again - I don't think it was unreasonable to bump my post - with a bit of a query - as to why so many people viewed it, but offered no assistance.
I do not have to justify myself to you, or anyone else, as to how much searching I have already done, trying to answer this question. But because you appear to only be 8 years old, i'll be explicit.
I have searched in several forums - both here and elsewhere. Just because I have not posted the same question in another section of THIS website, does not mean I have not already searched.
I have searched, and not found the answer. Therefore, I ask the question in a forum EXPLICITLY set up for that exact purpose.
You can try all you want to win that argument but you will FAIL.

I posted a "please help me" question in a "please help me" forum. Nothing wrong with doing that. It's the ENTIRE reason this forum is here.

Mate - get off your pedestal, and get a life. Go breathe some fresh air or jump in front of a bus or take a walk or something else more useful. Coz you're only showing everyone on here that you're an intolerant wanker with nothing to offer in terms of helping others.
Honestly, it amazes ME the number of people who feel the need to reply to forum questions, with criticism, rather than with assistance.
If people KNEW or FOUND the answers themselves, there would be NO NEED for forums like these.
Honestly, if you can't answer someone's question, don't waste your time, their time, or other-users' time, posting pointless diatribes.

You want to try and attack me because of ONE typo on the word DRUNK?

Yeah - childish and annoying, isn't it. If you spent more time checking what you were saying to me, instead of trying to belittle me and embarass me in the big bad world of the interwebz, you wouldn't have made this OBVIOUS ERROR. You see... even YOU are not perfect.
You ... have exposed your self as a lazy, ignorant person who lacks not only reading skills but common sense.

Really? I'VE done that. Not You? Pot calling Kettle ???
All anyone with common sense has to do is read the FIRST POST and they will know that you are slow.
Click to collapse
OK... I am slow. Doesn't that mean I deserve other more intelligent beings helping me out, because i'm too stupid to work it out for myself?
Going by your own reasoning: what you are saying is that you ONLY help out other intelligent people with questions that YOU determine are worth asking..... but hang on.... if they were so intelligent, they wouldn't need help and wouldn't ask questions.... so.... what you're actually saying is that you DON'T HELP ANYONE AT ALL, because EVERYONE that asks for help is stupid, slow and an idiot. Now THAT is something you've made plainly obvious.
Get mad, call me namses......
Click to collapse
Isn't that EXACTLY what you did in your FIRST post in response to me? (PS: Spelling again, idiot. Geez... it takes all of 2 seconds to proof-read your comments, before posting them..... urrrggghhhhh.... you lazy lazy little insignificant person, with no time to afford to do some simple speel-cheeking)
Speaking of that, you talk about me wasting time to see if you posted your question anywhere else
Click to collapse
Why would you bother doing that, if you didn't have a high-and-mighty opinion of yourself. I have stated that I did not ask that same specific question recently in any of the other "specific" forums... yet you insisted on "checking-up" on my posts. Like you are some school-teacher checking my homework. The more you try to justify your reasons for attacking me, the more you show yourself to the world to be an imbecile, ignorant, childish and irrelevant.
If you don't like me or what I've had to say, you can click that little icon and report me to the staff

DONE This is exactly what Admins and Mods are for. You will probably be receiving comment from them soon.
Because I HATE stupid people. People like you are the reason why forums are cluttered up with igorant questions all of the time
Click to collapse
Then don't read the damn forums then, if you get so angry at the rest of humanity being so ignorant and stupid. You obviously don't have the tolerance or intelligence to be able to assist anyone with their questions, so why bother reading them?
The ENTIRE purpose of online forums, is for stupid people to ask stupid questions about stupid topics that make no sense to them. And for non-stupid people to give non-stupid answers to try to help. If people weren't so stupid and ignorant, there would be no reason for forums to even exist. Statements of fact about problems belong on a dedicated wiki, or a website. Forums are for asking questions and giving suggestions or answers.
I'm adding you to my blocked user list because quite frankly.... you are truly wasted space on this planet

Likewise... and such a responsible and mature comment to make.
PS: Come to Australia. I would like to meet you in person to discuss our differences of opinion.

[GUIDE] How to earn thanks [New-Users]

Note:- This thread is intended for the New-Users that haven't quite settled in with XDA.
So I am sure by now, you have read the How To Be A New User And Not A Noob Guide, and have noticed the Forum ranks, but also most importantly the Thanks meter.
But before you go running off like a mad bunny hunter for thanks, read this guide to understand the Do's and Don'ts.
Don'ts:-
Do NOT, I repeat NOT beg for Thanks, you may ask so politely. E.G. " If this post helped you, I would gladly appreciate it if you could press the thanks button. "
There is nothing I hate more than a guy begging for thanks. E.G. " Where is my thanks? or Press the thanks button NOW!!! " - These people are often referred to as thanks hunters and come off bad, this ends up in them having less Thanks.
Don't answer a question if it has already been successfully answered. Only if you might have a different solution.
Don't come off with a I-Know-Best attitude, don't try to make the questioner feel dumb, yes even if it is a dumb question.
Don't use words that the questioner won't understand. E. G. " I think it might be due to a bad power supply and a under voltage in the battery cell's. Instead of, I think it's the battery you could think of replacing it. " Especially if the questioner isn't too clued up.
Do's:-
Give the answer but also explain why it could work - XDA is a place of sharing knowledge!
Always give detail if you just tell me what to do, rather than explaining that you were in the situation too, or have experience in the category, or even a link to an article, I might not always believe you. - XDA has lots of trolls.
If other people help you, give them a Thanks too - As I said at the don'ts, don't be ignorant and have a I-Know-Best attitude.
If the person posted in the wrong section, inform him but also answer his question to fore come him from making a double post.

I hope this guide helps some of the New-Users and that your Thanks meter grows very big one day. But please remember that the Thanks meter does not make you important or better than anyone else. There are a lot of people that have more than a 1000 Thanks that only deserve 200. But then there are also Developers and Senior Mods with only 10 Thanks.

I understand why this may upset you, he/she could have used better words to make this thread.
I do think it is a valid thread if people were to make a rundown of features and bugs offered by the kernels. We also compare different Roms and their features.
Which brings me to another issue, we have 3 custom kernels not 2...

Can we all focus on the op title now?
I expected that you tested the kernels and posted some results. But boy was I wrong...
You know, there's nothing wrong with discussing different developers work, respectfully, and talking about pros and cons, outside of development threads of course, but ranking and rating them is a bit much.
Openly rating developers work is pretty disrespectful to the hard working members who actually contribute work to this site, so others can make their phones kewl. This site was created for developers and it isn't Amazon, so please keep ratings to selling and consumer report sites. Developers contribute here for fun and for free, and don't need their work rated by anyone here. Flash things and see what YOU like, it's the least you can do after getting all this cool free stuff on xda.
Cool? Thread closed. :good:
