Question 8GB vs 12GB? - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

I actually have the S22U 256/12 and was planning to get a S23U 256/12 BUT Samsung decided that if you want 12gb RAM you have to get the 512gb only which will be way too expensive (for me)
I wonder if 8gb RAM is acceptable on a sammy phone and its heavy OneUI or even with RAM Plus the lags are definitely there?

Bigger is always better, but 8gb will run it well to a point. 12gb means it won't get bogged down and helps future proof it.
Without expandable storage even 500gb isn't that much memory and less is unacceptable.
Samsung hasn't done much to justify upgrading to the S23U. SOT still sucks too.
The S23U is more of the same high dollar hypeware that Samsung been peddling for the last 3 years. The last time Samsung slammed real meat down on the table was with the N10+.
Which is why I'm still happily running my 1.5tb dual drive N10+. Samsung is now just the another iPhone wannabe with an spen. That's what I think...

I don't think it will be a huge issue. The S22+ and S22 are 8GB, and based on using my wife's S22+ 8/256) and my daughter's S22 (8/256) I didn't see any performance issues. Nor have they complained.
I know it is not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but that is the closest that I can think of.
Based on the forums here and other places, it was the 8/128 S22 series devices that had poor performance issues; with Exynos devices tending to have more problems than the Snap Dragon devices.
The 8/256 Snap Dragon S22 series devices tended to perform better.
If you are not in a hurry, wait a few months after the S23 Ultras are released and jump on the discounts that are sure to come and then see if you can afford the 12/512 S23 Ultra. Your S22 Ultra should still fetch a decent trade-in price.

What about Ram Plus?
Is it as good as real Ram or it will slow down the UI?

It's a lot slower as it has less bandwidth of physical ram.
The N10+ vs S22U loading test vid* is interesting especially the last 2-3 minutes. Why does the N10+ rip it to shreds? The N10+ even had faster boot up times. At least part of the reason is the S22U is the 8gb ram model. Wonder how the 12gb S22U would do?
Since Android 10 Google Android has gone off the rails with CPU cycle sucking scoped storage.
This 3+yo N10+/Pie in hand gets twice the SOT with a battery that 700mAh smaller than the S22U. Even my new N10+/Q which is the 256gb variant rather the 500gb has 12gb of ram. With a 1tb SD card it has more storage capacity than current Samsung flagship.
Pretty sad how bad Samsung sucks now.
*There's another speed vid with the N9 vs N10+ vs S22U. The N9 get sliced to pieces by the N10+, the delays on the N9 are sometimes in the seconds.

I have RAM Plus enabled on my phone (it is set to 2GB) and I haven't noticed an increase in performance. After disabling it, there was a noticeable, but not huge, increase in performance. It seemed a little snappier. I have no way to objectively test the difference in performance though.
There are a couple things you need to consider when using it:
a) You are robbing Peter to pay Paul. That 2, 4, 6, or 8GB of "extra" RAM is coming out of internal storage. For a 512GB or 1TB device, probably not a big difference. However, it can make a bigger difference on a 128GB or 256GB device.
b) The non-volatile storage that internal memory uses is a lot slower that the volatile storage that is used for RAM. That can cause performance issues. Those issues can be exacerbated by poorly written apps or apps not optimized for RAM Plus.

I would say that 8GB vs 12GB should be considered by observing how the phone will be used most of the time.
In normal circumstances there is no noticeable difference in usage, because there is no need to utilize more than 5-6 GB or RAM for smooth operation of the device. In some scenarios, like playing RAM demanding games, difference could be spotted maybe.
As someone said above, this should be looked like a future - proof feature, nothing else.

I never regretted having too much ram, only too little. That extra 6gb of ram is dirt cheap for greedy Samsung to throw in.
12gb means many apps can stay loaded. If you multitask it's relevant.

Typical ram usage profile with a light load on the N10+. More ram probably means faster bootups. There are no advantages to having less ram other than cost; the newer ram is very efficient.
Samsung is no longer power user friendly. No good reasons to give Samsung your hard earned money for rehashed "new" flagships with inferior design/functionality/usability. That's what I think... Samsung is a dead end.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Specs (2GHz)

Source: http://www.redmondpie.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-specs-will-blow-your-brains-out/
The current generation of smartphones – with their 1GHz processors and 512MB of RAM – are already very impressive at what they can do. But rumored specifications (along with a photo) are spreading of the next generation of Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone – the Galaxy S2 – and its specs will. freaking. blow. your. head. off.

It is supposedly scheduled for release sometime in early 2011 and will supposedly have the following specifications:
-A 2GHz Processor. Possibly the next-generation version of Samsung’s Hummingbird CPU.
-1GB RAM along with 4GB of ROM. This is, as with the CPU, twice the magnitude of current-gen hardware.
-32GB built-in flash memory. MicroSD card slot expandable to 32GB making the Galaxy S2 able to hold 64GB of data.
-8 megapixel camera with full HD (1920×1080) video recording. Current-gen smartphones record video at 720p (1280×720).
-A 4.3” 1280×720 Super AMOLED display
-GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, b/g/n Wi-Fi, accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity / ambient light sensors.
-Run on Android 3.0 “Gingerbread”
While all these specifications are well and sweet, I really, honestly believe smartphone manufacturers, especially of the Android variety, should focus on increasing battery life by optimizing hardware + software instead of just blindly increasing clock speeds and doubling RAM. My HTC Desire still doesn’t last more than 15-16 hours whereas Taimur’s iPhone 4 blows past the 24 hour category without even going below 50%.
And yes, these specs are rumored. But if HTC and Motorola’s intentions of releasing 2GHz smartphones are anything to go by, they aren’t unbelievable.

What do you guys think the battery quality will be?
Hm unless Samsung has re-invented the battery for cell phones I seriously doubt this would have any type of usable battery life. I think those specs are too "wish list" to be believable.
But if they really do make that much of a leap in such a short time power to them, I just don't see anything like that happening.
Sorry, can this thread be deleted. I didn't see a Vibrant's "General" section 'till after.
Screw the 4.3" screen. Too big. 4" is perfect.
And these specs are fake.
It's just a made up rumor utilized to get people to visit their pathetic thing they call a 'website' filled with countless ads to make money out of people.
Boringggg. Don't people get bored of spreading these same exact rumors into the world every single time again?
Sounds great but those are some pretty bold rumors. That's a pocket sized computer lol
Battery life would last okay (i think) if it only uses the 2ghz when needed and when the screen is switched off bring it down to 400mhz You never know, it could last
that would be cool but i doubt that anything like that is gonna come out anytime soon.
It sounds like its unreal specs but hey we can dream for now anyway
sent from a evo 4g stock Rom for now anyway
Didn't Samsung said this is 5X faster than the Hummingbird?
Great, now just take those specs and throw in a 1400mah battery and it should be good for a solid 10 hours.
I agree with others in this post: the Android phone manufacturers should look a little more closely at battery life on their phones rather than turning the market into a **** waving contest. My G2 is at 29% after 37 hours right now, and it's a reminder of the reason why I bought it over the Vibrant.
Not impossible:
Processor could be the orion

Gingerbread I don't think that it will but it could

Then the other specs look real
Or you could get a

Now that gives me a phone-boner. Too bad the whole thing would probably have that terrible plasticky feeling that the other Galaxy S phones have had.
Since when Android 3.0 is Gingerbread? These specs are clearly bull**** and rumors.
ITT: people confusing Gingerbread with Honeycomb
i doubt it will have such specs you would need a nuclear power plant to power that thing even for a galaxy Tab 2 is pretty doubtful as specs...
More likely it will be a dual core cpu @ 1ghz with a ram in between 512mb-1gb and a screen resolution of about 540p or so a Samoled2 screen and probably a 16gb-32gb internal storage + sd slot

1601 points? Fastest phone in the world?
Step aside.
It does look like the iphone 5 will be the fastest smartphone (not going by the graph there but just the tech. of the chipset, seems to be just like krait dual core but better). That android benchmark graph looks a bit of as well with regards to the nexus 7 etc. and the one S.......and it is only one test as well and the source isn't exactly the best.......
Wait till anandtech or/and gsmarena get a full set of benchmarks up and they can be trusted.
As I posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31643039&postcount=14
The HTC one XL/S are the fastest android devices and are faster than the nexus 7.
1601 points?
Lol yup, been completely reworked the graph to show the iphone 5 as being the best, what a surprise.........
Galaxy S3 benchmark scores;

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/1036389
Again though, only one benchmark test, wait for more (better/accurate ones).
Wait for the LG Optimus G... The quad core Krait will most likely best the iPhone as well based on preliminary benchmark results.

Are there any games that htc one s can't play smoothly? Something like dead trigger?
All hype, no substance.
Sorry my english is not perfect does hype means every thing without any lag?
Does one s have any bugs? Ever had any problems with it? Is one s better than xperia s? Any problems with pentile screen?
I love my One S. No issues except for the fact that I really hate Sense and hence I wipe it all out and flash CM10 nightlies. And yes, the One S outperforms the Xperia thanks to the Adreno 225 (Xperia S has the 220) and MSM8260A
How can I check the version of my cpu s3 or s4. Where does htc sell snapdragon s4 version and where doesn't?

hype:
Excessive publicity and the ensuing commotion
2. Exaggerated or extravagant claims made especially in advertising or promotional material: "It is pure hype, a gigantic PR job" (Saturday Review).
3. An advertising or promotional ploy: "Some restaurant owners in town are cooking up a $75,000 hype to promote New York as 'Restaurant City, U.S.A.'" (New York).
4. Something deliberately misleading; a deception: "[He] says that there isn't any energy crisis at all, that it's all a hype, to maintain outrageous profits for the oil companies" (Joel Oppenheimer).
tr.v. hyped, hyp·ing, hypes
To publicize or promote, especially by extravagant, inflated, or misleading claims: hyped the new book by sending its author on a promotional tour.

Better than xperia S except for the screen in terms of res. i.e. sharpness and real screen estate.
Only bugs are:
- signal issues in areas with poor coverage (supposedly fixed in latest update)
- majority of black models has chipping issues (fixed with a newer designed model, has smoother edges and a bevelled USB port)
My only complaints with the S are:
- crap notification LED
- poor support from HTC so far
Other people have problem with these:
- pentile screen (IMO only noticeable on certain icons and when really concentrating on the edges of icons/text)
- limited storage (10GB for videos, photos etc. and 2.21GB for apps)
Here is anandtech's view on the screen:

So it has 14gb for use right? So if I understand you, you said that I can only install 2gigs of games and don't have the possibility to instaal 7gb or 5gb of games?
Wait to release of the iPhone 5 and after few months new android devices will be released new alternatives etc.
So it has 14gb for use right? So if I understand you, you said that I can only install 2gigs of games and don't have the possibility to instaal 7gb or 5gb of games?
Yes, you have just over 14GB for use.
You can install those games like NOVA etc. and iirc the actual base files are stored on the larger 10GB partition, you can also move apps etc. over to the larger 10GB partition etc. via settings>apps>app you want to move
If you plan on installing all the big games like dead space, nova, GTA etc. then don't get the one S, get the GS 3 or GS 2 as they both have 16GB internal storage and a SD slot.
But I can replace games to 10gig partition so I think it enough space for shadow gun and few other games. I have 16gigs at the moment in my old xperia x8, 14gb for use and still have 5gigs free and I have a lot of ps1 games etc.
Sgs3 and s2 are ugly in my opinion.
One s is much faster then s2 and is comparable with s3
Being that the iphone 5 is several months newer than one s, one x, gs3, nexus 7,etc., wouldn't you expect it to be faster? And when the next round of android devices comes out in a few months, they will all be faster, too.
If the iphone 5 is not one of the fastest devices on the market when it comes out, that would be a pretty weak effort on apple's behalf!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Cross-platform benchmarks are highly inaccurate. These scores mean nothing really, we'll never know how good the A6 chip is unless android is ported over to the iPhone 5.

Is Samsung dropping the 16GB model?

At the launch event the official spec sheet shows only 32GB/64GB storage. There is no mention of 16GB... so has Samsung finally dropped the 16GB model? If so this is GREAT news!!! Also I see 60fps video recording, which will finally allow me to drop my canon t2i which I primarily use for its 60fps capabilities to make slow motion videos.
Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihGMrrf-WlE
No but you can drop $17 and pick up a 64GB MicroSD.
apparently they did which is awesome, i made many mistakes in my life especially when i used to buy the 16GB models it sucks when you are out of space i hate it and i got a 32GB (95% full) i had to giveup on some of my stuff to recover space useless thing when you can't decide which stays and which goes with the wind XD
32GB is okay still not sure its enough but remains by far better that 16GB, hopefully all high end devices will end up with more space
+1 on that comment its indeed GREAT news
I wish, like HTC did with the HTC One. But according to the major tech news sites we should expect a 16GB version.
Spec sheet shows 32/64 GB. But in the actual unveiling, they also mentioned 16GB.

While I haven't heard they dropped the 16gig version it's entirely possible that they looked at the One and said eff it, we do 32/64gigs too. They could even go 32/64/128 considering they manufacture their own memories, why not one-up competition in that regard too?
Each increment from 16GB>32GB>64GB costs the manufacturer $10. If Samsung sells 30MM SGS4's and offered 32GB of memory "standard" that's $300M in lost profit assuming the selling price stays the same. If 4.5MM (15%) of those are people paying $100 more for 32GB of memory that costs Samsung $10 that's another $405MM in lost profit. So it's highly unlikely they'll be playing Marie Antionette ("let them eat cake") any time soon.
P.S. - The cost of a removable SD card is about $15-20. Not for the single part but because of things like flaps to protect it on sealed devices and the added expense of producing the device because of the additional (internal) design and fitment complexity it introduces. That's why HTC's ups their internal storage vs. providing an SD card on the majority of their devices and the backs of Samsung's devices are removable.
It seems that the S4 16GB price will be slightly above the HTC One 32GB, Samsung has no reason to upgrade it for free if they can take some more money for the 32GB.
Re: Is Samsung dropping the 16GB model? Is 32GB the base model now?
According to Android Central, available in 16, 32, & 64GB, fwiw...
I wish! I doubt I'll be able to find the 32GB version in my country, and if I do I bet it will be extremely overpriced
and I really wanted the 32GB version, on my SIII 16 wasn't nearly enough, I had to delete a few good games :/
I wish Android re-emplemented the moving apps to external sd card feature, why did they even discard that anyway?
All sales advertisement for S4 in Europe is 16GB version.
I can imagine that no sales company will set 32GB or 64GB for sale because price tag already is very high!

Bought it more than one and a half years ago but up until recently was lying on a shelf. Started using it together with a new S10 - both identically configured (stock, no root, uninstalled what I didn't want), same apps, 2 sim cards (actually 5 sim cards in each thanks to SIMore), wifi, multiple apps syncing in the background, power mode "optimized", and yet A8 eats only 0.3-0.5% an hour screen off while S10 (with "only" 3353/3400 estimated/design battery capacity) takes more like 0.5-0.6% an hour. And that's after a week of optimizing (uninstalling, disabling, suspending, background limiting, standby bucketing, battery historianing). I can't get S10 to last at least as long as A8 (which costs only 1/3).
If A8 had 6+ GB of RAM I would have never bought S10. A8 has a notification LED, can take 2 sim cards and a microsd card together and with 2x SIMore I could put in there 8 sim cards. None of that is possible with S10.
Why are people complaining about A8 battery? Such an amazing phone.

i went from the A8 to the S9 and regret it. The A8 is a venerable phone and is very overlooked here in the states because of what seems to be caused by the snob factor. What else could cause a sensible human being to choose an inferior performing phone over the superior one? Other than the microsecond advantage the S9's snapdragon has over the Exynos in the A8 is negligible, the A8s slightly less sharp display never let me down or left me wanting a better one(its a phone for gods sake after all), the rest is nearly identical. The A8's FFC is vastly superior than the S9's tho, and thats objective, not just subjective. The A8 has a dual aperture FFC array whereas the S9 is single, and its obvious when compared side by side. the 2018 A8 is a wonderful phone. Oh, to your topic, ive never noticed any battery issues in it either. It lasts longer than the S9 does on the daily, and ive put it thru nearly identical scenarios. Even down to the time i take it off the charger before going to bed and seeing where it is percentage-wise in the morning, where it sits on my desk at work, how often i use it during the day and what for. The A8 battery life is just superior in my personal experience with both phones as daily drivers for months on end. I ran my A8 for a year and then sold it to the older kiddo, so its still in the family and i keep tabs on how its doing for him regularly.
oh, and i dont use that app nor would i give an ounce of credence to a battery estimator tool saying how big it thinks my battery should be based on how much estimated life it has left

Have a try at using the Zf4 beside it. You'll see the difference, heck even the ZF3 with sd888 is more efficient and smoother/has less frame drops.

I don't contest a Fold could be faster, I also owned a Fold 3 for some time then returned it as it doesn't fit my needs so I know how they are. But the Exynos 2200 is very close with it's SD counterpart and to be honest I don't care about some marginal higher benchmark scores. I don't do benchmarks, I just use the phone (mainly business) and it never failed me, or had lag or stutter. It just works and is flawless at everything I throw at it.
I don't want to enter in the Exy vs SD debate, it is neverending but saying that it "sucks" at least for the S22 series is completely wrong, actually in tests SD is heating more and suffers from throttling

Both the Exynos 2200 and SD 8 Gen 1 both suffer from efficiency problems because the 4nm Samsung Foundry manufacturing process was a failure (hence Qualcomm going to TSMC for the 8+Gen1). It's good that you like the phone and it works for you but there is without a doubt frame drops and general stutter on the Exynos s22u, if it doesn't bother you then great but it bothers me and obviously other S22u users on this forum.

I saw posts and heard people complaining so I don't say it doesnt. Just that it is not general or for all devices. It is not that I am not bothered, I just never encountered lag or stutter on my device and I doubt mine is unique. Maybe I use apps that don't lag, dunno...can you give me some examples of apps where lag is happening? And I don't say about that Reddit thread with scrolling lags because there I have lag too. I am talking about aps or settings on the phone where you do something and it lags. I'll try just to test

Animations drop frames and yes scrolling on Twitter and Reddit stutter. Like I said, use it beside the Zf4 or even the ZF3 and you can see the difference even scrolling on the apps. FWIW, I had similar on the P6P which basically uses and Exynos. The S22u doesn't perform badly as such, it just doesn't perform like a £1400 phone should.
So, getting back to the topic that was posted, what does any of the above have to do with SMB performance? Numbers were posted via screenshots that are in a foreign language that most don't understand. SMB infers a network copy file operation so a lot to be considered here other than just the phone. As a matter of fact, I would say the phone factors in less that 50% with regards to SMB performance.
I backup and restore a lot of things with network shares. It is a common use case for me. Fact is the SD 8 Gen 1 is almost twice as fast.
Other than that the phone is not bad.
my exinos do its work no lags no loose of frame
twitter and reddit for me are unuseful and banned from all ny phones and tablets only good to waste time i have two s22 exinos and no problems al all
i use the phone don't play with benchmarks

I have the same but the point here was performance of network transfers via SMB....I don't use SMB shares so can't check transfer speeds at the moment but I might setup one just for the sake of testing. I find cloud sharing much easier to use for me tho
my files are all on nas and pendrive in Italia cloud is not very good and working is an optional like streaming (dazn docet) only in big cities you can use it and not always
for years I've worked in a public company and backup was something really not in the mind of our central company

Exynos I get around 20 MB/s with SMB2

That is insane. Are you on Beta? Did you change something?
accidently send it twice...
I often have performance problems when using SMB on android/linux.
Try to use SFTP, its much faster.

I think, my phone just had a lucky day. I've made some testing, and my speed sucks around 1-5 MB/s
