Hello everyone,
Need your help folks.
I need a tablet for my 9 years old boy, and I am a newbie.....
I thought about either Asus Transformer or Galaxy 10'
- fast browser with flash, youtube, facebook
- skype with video
- avi, mp4 etc playback ( I dont want to convert files, I want to play them stright
after downloading)
- easy data transfer from my PC
- GPS navigation (copilot, igo etc) without using data
- some games working like : moshi monsters and android stuff (I ve got Galaxy 2)
Do I need a custom ROM for all above option?
Please share your thoughts, I ve got 2 weeks to make the decision.
Thank you for your help
Tough question
I guess the answer is; It depends.
The sturdiness of the construction should be a certain plus considering how a 9 year old may handle it. ASUS are good about upgrading so even if you don't root it you might not need to wait much for upgrades.
If he is going to use it for school work the keyboard/dock would be a HUGE advantage since it also has a card reader in the dock so he can backup any work or transfer to main computer with ease.
The drawback would be the price especially considering possible longevity in the hands of a 9 year old (one lucky 9 year old).
If it's good for a 30+ year old boy, i reckon it will be GREAT for a 9 year old boy
- fast browser with flash, youtube, facebook
Use alternative stock browser (dolphin for tab is good)
- skype with video
- avi, mp4 etc playback ( I dont want to convert files, I want to play them stright
after downloading)
Use moboplayer or mx player
- easy data transfer from my PC
Use software data cable
- GPS navigation (copilot, igo etc) without using data
- some games working like : moshi monsters and android stuff (I ve got Galaxy 2)
All previous android games will run on tablet although not all will perform great if not optimized considering tablet 1280x800 rez (yeah im looking at you star blizt)
You may want to give a 7" tab as a test run just to be safe.

Are you sure?!?
Btw if my 2.5 yo son fights with me to play with it, 9 yo will be crazy about it for sure
9 year old daughter uses it all the time. Plays games mostly. 4 year old son also plays games on it. Real question is not age though, but rather maturity level of said child. My daughter has has a PSP since she was 2 and son got one this year. Both have rules to follow when using these asnd other devices (computer, game consoles, etc). Set those rules first and you sxhouild be good.
P.s. its also good for you to be familiar with the devices they use.... so you know how to restric access, fix, and otherwise maintain these devices.....
I bought an Acer Iconia because I could not find the Transformer. I picked up the Transformer about 2 months ago and gave my 9 year old daughter the Iconia and she has been doing great with it. SHe is taking pictures, videos, and playing games.
IMO the 7" form factor would work better for hands that size. If you do get one for a 9-year-old, I would suggest a screen protector and bumper-style case.
My son is 8 and he uses it all the time. He is mostly playing games and sometimes watching TV. He loves the transformer dearly.
My 7yr old nephew came over w/ family for dinner last week. His mom brought the ipad. i let him use my Trnsfrmr and he liked it. Upon handing it to him, he went to Market and downloaded some games even I didnt know about. Alot were available on Appstore so he knew what he was looking for. Some of them worked with the Playstation 3 controller. After playing Youtube videos that were driving me crazy, he had to go and didnt want to put it down! Put a case and a screen protector on it and your 9yr old should be fine.

I have three tablets, a Gtab, a TF and an Ipad. When I chase my 8 year old off of one he sneeks aroundand starts playing games on of the others. He prefers the tablets over a pc now. Be sure to limit access to the market!
Am I the only person in this thread who is fascinated that no one has brought up that there is a debate whether or not a 9 year old should have a tablet as a full-time device?
The majority of this thread is about letting a child use their tablet part-time. But OP's idea is to give a CHILD a tablet. Just so confused on what this world is turning into. Investing a $300+ device for a 9-year old.

Why not? If you have the money of course and he/she is reponsible enough to not be playing 12h a day. Better if they learn technology quickly so they are not behind.
^ I think you are.
And don't worry, in say 10 yrs or so, people will be talking about giving a child more than just a tablet, like a high-tech helmet that serves as a media player all in one.
The Transformer is good for any age. It comes down to the fact of getting a 9 year old a tablet, or anything of this value. like zephiK said. $400 is kinda steep for something that may be thrown around, banged around, dropped, etc. The ViewSonic GTab is only $350(?) and while it isn't that much better than $400, the 50 that you save and probably go to a accidental damage insurance/warranty.
I wish my parents would think of giving me something that cost over $100. If I wanted anything over that, I had to chip in at least 25% or wait til Christmas/birthday and that would be my only present from them
They are both veyr good to use for kids..
Unless he needs the keyboard dock I think a Nook color for $250 is a better choice for a child. The 7" is a better size for small hands. It is a a nice piece of hardware with a beautiful IPS screen. You can easily root and flash a custom rom to turn it into a fully functional Android tablet

+1 to this. Of course with it's 7" screen, it can be a ereader once he starts reading more for school and fun. Since he will probably only be using it to play games, watch movies, and maybe go on some websites, the Nook's hardware is perfect for that. No need to pay for the Tegra 2's hardware when he probably won't need it
EDIT: I was in Staples today, and saw that the Dell Streak is only $250 or $299. It would definitely need to be rooted and run a custom rom, because the stock on the Streak is crappy. If I were you, I'd choose between the Nook Color and Dell Streak. The Streak would probably be worth it in the long run, as it won't become outdated as fast. Too me the TF is a serious decision, unless you're absolutely sure. (I'm basing the seriousness off of what I've seen kids around his age do..)
we have 3 of them in our household now. My 9 year old daughter used her birthday money to buy one, with help from mom and dad, and my 13 year old daughter just did the same this week for her birthday.
Depends on the child...
Like I said in the title "Depends on the child". I personally wouldn't buy my 14 year old girl one because she's broken 3 high dollar cell phones in a little over a year. I'd buy both my boys one in a heartbeat. My 7 and 3 year old sons both share my nook color and treat it like gold. At 9 I'd look at the new Acer 7 inch tablet. I almost wish I'd have waited for that myself (my 7 inch nook always fit great in my my work slacks or loose jeans) but I like the nice big screen on the Transformer for watching movies in bed (great for those nights when my 3 year old sneaks into ed with my wife and I and won't go to sleep. Thomas and Friends to the rescue). Think about a few things such as the maturity of the child, form factor (what's the size most suited to her), cost and manufacturer support (Asus hands down has the best support, ie. updates)
Kids love choices so pick two or three options and let her choose what she wants out of those. Ristrict Market and internet access as well. Too much crap out there nowadays that children have no business looking at. And finally for the love of everything holy do not break down and give her an iPad....just don't. Its our duty as parents to lovingly guide them down the righht path. And if lovingly doesn't work then bribe generously.
hi i want a windows 6 pro phone
i tried to search for al ist of them but didnt really have much luck
it has to be winmo 6 pro not 6.1 and prefferably i would also like to find the phone with win 6 pro with the largest screen
so far i got the tytn2 which was the phone i actually had and want to get back to for software reasons but i dont really want the flip keyboard and if possible a bigger screen
thanks in advance
Maybe a time machine would be helpful....
Given that you asked for help in finding a phone running an OS that was released 5 1/2 years ago and was 'In the wild' for only a year, what did you really expect? Your reply was unnecessary and unwarranted - if you are that desperate for an antique phone then use Google and you will find a list. If you don't know how to use Google then try this link
Don't expect a DEVELOPMENT site to be ready to rush to answer questions on something that is extremely outdated, superseded and was never exactly popular while it was around.
lets keep the name calling to a zero tolerance please.
The Omnia Pro got a big screen and keyboard. I came from the Xperia X1 with a smaller screen and i noticed with the Omnia (wich has the same resolution) that for the Omnias screensize it isnt enough. While it was fine with the smaller Xperia Screen.
lol, why dont you get a windows 7 phone over an windows 6 phone? windows 6 is getting old man.
Hi everyone, I made an account to this forum to ask some questions before investing money on to a tablet.
The tablet I've set my eyes on is the "ALL FINE FINE7 Air 16gb", finding any information whatsoever on this tablet is extremely difficult, mostly because of the name I believe. This tablet is around 115 US dollars, and supposedly comes with Jellybean 4.1.
I was wondering if investing money on this thing was a good idea, I'm really worried that I'll buy one and it'll end up with a dead battery, end up being slow, or the screen might be bad, etc.
There's only one video in the entire internet I could find on this tablet too. (just google the name and it'll come up)
It's either this tablet, or save up a little more to get a Nexus 7. Now, most people would ask, "why would you choose a chinese tablet over a Nexus 7?". Well, that's because of two reasons, first of all, this thing has a camera in the front AND in the back, and I need the two of them for video chatting, and second, I am an avid gamer, infact I don't do much of anything else on android devices other then play games, and the Mali400 Mp that this tablet is carrying, is either more powerful then the Nexus 7 GPU, or is better optimized.
And I'm worried that when I get the tablet, it won't be optimized for a lot of games, and I won't be able to play them.
So is it the chinese tablet or the nexus? Thanks!
Allfine? All fine!
I bought an Allfine 7 from Focalprice.com just to see if it is a good and reliable tablet. Mine is a 7 inch quad core.
The tablet came rooted and everything is working properly.
I don't have anyone else to ask, but the battery seems to drain in 4,5-5 hours when on WiFi.
Other than that applications that I am not allowed to install from Play Store, I install from Blackmart Alpha.
So, all fine for Allfine :good:
Cheers from Athens, Greece.
Hi All,
As a moderator for the Samsung devices, I have pretty much owned every device Samsung has made ...... So, I decided to venture out into some of the less known Phones from China/Far-East.
This one I purchased is The Meizu M1 Note I decided on this phone because of the price point and specs ...... Hey Octo Core, 403 ppi 13mb camera 32 gig internal memory
All for 205 bucks ....... not bad I figured I ll roll the dice ... After all it really is just a back up phone and a toy to learn more about ...... Glad I did.....
1st I paid the extra 27 bucks for fast ship Through DHL ..... I got the phone off of AliExpress.com (this is a subsidiary of Alibaba website) China's Amazon equivalent. There are many other decent sites to buy from do your research before buying ......... some sites are not so good. One way of discerning a reputable site is to make sure it is PayPal confirmed..... do your research. Anyway, after ordering I got a confirmation pretty quick... 6 days later the device was in my hands........ Cool !
A MUST HAVE BOOKMARK ...... http://www.trackingmore.com/ This site has all the major shipping services in one place. Makes it easy to track say "ChinaPost" or DHL or whatever......... Much easier on you ...... this allows to track the front end of the shipping better and gives you a better understanding why things take a bit of time to get out of China ...usually China then to Hong Kong through customs and then to USA.
As for the device...
Getting around on the phone when you 1st turn it on is a bit confusing......... Uhhh Most of the Icons are in Chinese, but after looking at it is easy to figure out how to configure ...... It runs Android 4.4.4 with Meizu's Flyme Shell ...... No worries what you really just need to do is to register on flyme I connected to Wifi then (THIS IS IMPORTANT) register with a Name, Like "Oka's-phone" do not use the phone number to register it will not recognize the Out of China number ... said it would I could not get it to work that way. Upon further investigation I discovered, there are 3 types of Roms it is running All the same ending with a letter . Either "U", "C" , OR "A" A.... is the international generic Rom. But, no biggie really they all work the same. Once you register with Flyme, you just go in and "Open System Privileges" and Voila' you are rooted.
Once you have done that you go to their App store (called App Center in English ) There you search for Google installer, install that 1st then each of the Google apps separately. Once you have the Play store installed you now can download everything you need/want.
Now, one of the Downsides of using a Chinese phone here, for some reason Not all my paid apps would recognize on this , so They would not load from my Google backup.... ..... My guess the reason for this is some licensing conflict with the Play store and Flyme .... but it is what it is. ~~ Update All but 3 of my apps did eventually update to the paid version-
Performance
The device is pretty much performs like a Samsung S5 ........ but there are differences for one ....... you can root the phone just by Opening System privileges .... easy But...... The Boot-loader is locked...... so I do not see any Custom Roms coming soon until that is solved...... if ever.
The phone Benches on Antutu 42-43,000 much like a S5 ...... The graphics work very nicely, but I am not a gamer so.... can't comment on that.
Phone reception is excellent....... the Phone rings soft for 2 seconds then goes loud out of the box ... like to change that , haven't figured out yet, will update later on this.
Music Quality is decent considering it is a single speaker, I am going to install a sound app to improve the quality and see if that helps.
The stock software for the camera is Pretty lack luster........ so I installed FV-5 and Pro-capture........ FV-5 seemed to really improve the performance of the camera. I do not think the front-facing camera will work on Skype I tried and could not make it go ..... my guess it is not configured for that. ~~~ See Post #5 Suspect008 found the fix it is in the video configuration Thank you for posting the fix !
Video works pretty good actually ....... On the still photos, they seem only to be sharp to about 15-20 feet then they soften noticeably ... could just be me but I think the software that is controlling it is not modern enough......
The WiFi seems not to be strong as my note 3 or note 4 I need to be closer to the router seemed a little weaker ...... 15% +/- not a big deal but noticeable to me
GPS Works great ! Google maps is flawless, The Battery life is better than the S5 ...... Medium Use 17 hours and @ 56 % so that is excellent.
Bluetooth I have had no issues connected to my car, a keyboard and speakers 1st so that is good.
I tried using it with the Dual sim It works fine I used a ATT, Verizon and Tmo so it does work on both CDMA and GSM.
Those are my Initial thoughts ......... This is WAY worth the 205 bucks it cost me ..... It performs well enough that it can be you daily use device no problem .......... Not as good as a Note 4 but 1/4 the cost ......
I will update more as I discover more and provide some Chinese Translations on the device icons .....
:good::good::good: Give it 3 thumbs up for the price to performance .... Hope that helps all of you looking at this device
Extracted Ring Tones From the Meizu M1 note

Meizu Ring tones 2 of 3
Here is the second Zip of ringtones ... check out Mario, MusicBox, Nighty-night, Progress
Meizu Ring tones 3 of 3
Here is the Third Zip of ring tones
The-kittens is kinda interesting Technology and the Waltz all are pretty cool
Skype Front Camera Works
About the front camera for skype,
I had the same issue but solved by going to skype settings and disabling the "use skype in back........" setting under video and voice calls. mine works fine. and I agree on all your points. its a really remarkable device for the price. Flyme needs some polishing. like we cant save a number to contacts from dialer and dialer has no access to contatcs. thats really painfull. but it is powerful as s5 for 1/4 cost. I play all the high end games without a sweat/ Asphalt 8 dead trigger modern combat no hassle for this device.
I have been using the phone for almost two months now and was previously using a samsung galaxy s3.
I am quite happy with the phone's performance. The screen is great. The camera is decent. The battery life is good.
I hope meizu releases the lollipop firmware soon.
Lollipop has been released it is the flyme 4.53 I think google it you will find it was easy to install
Really interesting, Thank you for this Information!
I believe the LP version released is beta.

Your advice is precious guys.
Sorry for my English, I'm from Belgium .

Thanks you
Samsung galaxy tab 4 10.1 I think is the best choice....it has a ir blaster for remote control. ...love samsung. ....check that one out bro....
Hello,
Thanks for your advice bro
Nothing about pixel c guy's ? Or Z4
Any other advice ?
BTW thanks you
ergonomics and heat/material/looks
important for me is thickness, as I am one lazy geek, and I use it normally at bed time, and when you are horizontally, you need to hold to in from sides, so this is for me - needed light one for my skinny wrists .
needed ask for accelerometer adjustment so it wouldn't disturb playing more demanding games as well!
if you need that device for long working at one place, no need for expensive WiFi device, will be OK with the 3g modem.
if mobile is your way, think about extra cover for raindrops and possible damages make it necessary to have good plastic or material bag with proper locking if you are really in motion.
for home devices I have no advises, but just keep in mind that in about a year will be to old any way to put any more money in it, so don't go for the newest ones.
this is how I see it.
