Question Hinge movement when fully folded - Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

Hi guys, I have been using the Flip 3 for a few days and noticed that when the phone is fully folded, the two parts of the phone can move slightly.
I first noticed this when I tried to use Samsung Pay with the phone folded, and when I pushed the power button, the top part of the phone body shifted a bit.
I wonder if anyone else noticed this on their flips?

I just tried wiggling mine when it's closed but it's solid, no movement at all.

Nothing here, my FLIP3 feels rock-solid, no shifting/creaking/etc.

The bottom part it's a little loose on mine. I can see it move a little from the hinge when it's folded. Defective.

That's what's happening on mine. It doesn't bother me that much but I might contact samsung about this and see what can be done.

I had another one before this and the hinge was so loose, it almost opened by itself. Good for people who want to flip it with one hand. It's lottery with this phones. If you are not lucky...

i got the same thing, when closed the move can move a litle bit to the left or right, when openend i dont have any movement.

Thanks for your input. I reckon it's within normal tolerance as it is a moving part after all. It's fine to me since once the phone is open, there's no budge

I have two Flip 3. One Flip has this problem. The other not. Samsung itself only offered me to send the device back and then buy a new one.

How did you get on with Samsung on this? Mine has started doing it!

Mine does it as well. About 1 mm at the most. I'm sure this is within tolerance. Those that don't probably will at some point. It's completely normal that the hinge loosens a bit with use.

Yep tiny bit of movement so acceptable/expected I guess

No movement on mine. I got it day 1 and it's gotten some pretty heavy use.

Had mine since Sep 3rd and when there's no case on there's zero movement, though with the offical leather case the two halves have some slight play(might be due to the case providing more of a bumper along the screen).

Hey all,
Happens on mine as well.
Before this one, I had another unit for testing purposes and that wan't wasn't moving at all. Mine moves a little bit... not worried to much about it, but it's there.

Mine has a bit of play, it also has the tapping sound when running my finger across the top from what sounds like the screen Separating.

dissasembling an HTC inspire- stuff behind screen!

wondering if anyone has ever dissasembled thier inspire before....if its hard, tricky, details.
wierd thing, i dropped my phone yesterday, as it was falling i fumbled for it, smacked it up agains the wall in my house. Bits of drywall got wedged between the screen and the body of the phone, as i was trying to get it out with a thin knife, some of it dropped down inside the phone. i want to get it out because i have a feeling it will ende up making white dust in my screen.
another reason id like to get it open is to see if i can get the bottom right coner of the phone re-secured. its loose and floats up and down.

DO NOT DO THIS! Not that you don't have the ability to do so...But because this phone has not been on the market for a year yet. the screen coming up is a defect. Get it replaced.
EDIT: A EXTREMELY slight movement is normal. It has to give to be stable. It's kind of the same concept behind a wooden roller coaster. Some, very minor flex is required, as it actually supplies more structural integrity. Now...If you had a knife under the screen, that is far too much flex, and should in fact be replaced.

lol i think you are misunderstanding me, i was just trying to scrape the drywall from the little gap between the body and the screen on the left side fo the phone, i wasnt prying under it. the bottom right corner is something seperate. its not coming completely apart but it flexes noticeable up and down and make the screen turn funny colors there. ive read that its a common thing, but its not bad enough for me to want to send my phone in for replacement. i didnt get it from at&t

Ah ok. I understand now. And I know what you need to get ALL of it out in seconds! You need Cyber Clean. I got some for Christmas and this stuff is amazing! Attached is what to look for. You can find it at Target normally in a little pouch. Got mine from thinkgeek and got a whole tub.
Damn...I sounded like Billy Mays there for a second. haha

i've been thinking about getting that stuff, i guess i will now though but i really need it to clean out under my macs keyboard
Yeah...
You really don't want to try to tackle taking this phone apart.. it is prolly one of the hardest phones to do.

Funny my screen "flexes" on the bottom right corner. It really bugs me, its stupid, but I wish I could fix it. It pops up, then I push it down. It's stays for less than 10min and pops back up. I'm not sure if its worth the hassle to call HTC.

I used a clamp on mine last night. Placed a cloth between it and the phone and let the clamp do its thing for about 10 hours before taking it off this morning. I can see and tell a noticeable improvement. No flex. But only time will tell if this did the trick or not. So far after 3 hours it has not come up at the corner.

will HTC really replace the phone over this corner issue? i dont think im going to be able to get the drywall out of my phone and its really bugging me, its wedged in theere HARD. hard enought to make the body of the phone flex away from the side of the screen......and there some thin plastic layer between the phone body and the side of the screen.....which i have messed up by trying to scrape the drywall out with a knife. boo. phone works perfectly but i hate the cosmetic issues

Have other people been having the screen coming up problem? Mine is so severe that I can see light bleed on the bottom right hand corner. Wonder if it's covered by AT&T warranty
I just started having this same proble.I am TIIIIIIIRRRRRREEEDDDDD of ATT's crap though. I have been on the phone with them for 32 hrs in 38 days with now 4 different phones and I LOVE the Inspire. I am having the same issues now though where the screen is coming up and it's really really annoying. I mean REALLY annoying. I am thinking to just put an otter box defender on it and it will be fine? Can anyone confirm that the defender will keep the screen in place or any case for that matter?
I bought a silicon cover for $2 shipped off ebay and I didn't notice this issue until I just checked after reading this thread. The cover adds some serious bulk to the phone, but kept it from breaking when I dropped it from upper chest level on concrete (I'm 5'11"... and I swiped too far and caught the edge with my thumb. I almost cried).
P.S. It still hit hard enough to gouge the metal through the thick silicon

[Q] Anyone have issues with their keyboard dock?

I bought my tablet with the TF201 keyboard a while back since its identical to the TF700 keyboard. It's always connected and locked, but every once in a while i notice my external mouse, which is plugged into the usb port of the keyboard, stops working due to the fact that the keyboard magically unlocks itself from the tablet. the lock bar or whatever it's called doesn't retract though so I can never tell unless I try to slightly lift the tablet away from the keyboard and lo and behold it comes right off. I noticed this tends to happen more often when the tablet is opened about 100 or so degrees from the keyboard.
Do you think I may have a faulty keyboard or has this happened to others?
Mine locks properly, so I can at least say it's not normal.
Mine locks safely too. But I do have to push relatively hard until it "clicks" into the dock and to be extra safe I tend to slide the lock slider all the way to the right.

+1. I've had my TF700 + dock since July 16, 2012. No issues as far as connections between them are concerned, though the tab sits a little loose. The clasps don't grab the tablet tightly anymore. There is some play about 5 degrees. Anyone knows how it can be tightened again?

That's the weird thing though, mine clicks and locks but i can only push the slider to the mid point.
My Transformer doesn't stay tight on the dock any more, because the tiny little clip inside the tablet itself has broken on one side (I think). The result is that it seem to clip in correctly, but then I can rotate it to the right and the left clip come free without any resistance.
I've done quick searches to find people with similar problems, but haven't found anyone else yet. Doesn't look very fixable, due to the size of the small clip. Don't know if you've got the same issue, but to check, look where the dock latches onto the tablet with a good light and see if your clips are still there.

Amazing... we both post on the same day... could be this is the start of an epidemic of broken platic clips inside the tablet section. Not sure if they are plastic or metal but they do look plastic and in any case clearly are not fit for purpose of docking/undocking dozens of times a day.
I sent mine back... see my post. They are blaming me! I barely had it 6 weeks and it never left my house. Never dropped. Only ocassionally used extra force to dock it because if you don't then the locking tab does not click!!!! SIGH
the only problem that i have with the dock is that the spring in the hinge has gotten loose

I posted in your thread as well -- locking pin snapped off yesterday. It is plastic, which makes it a Prime example <pun intended> of use of plastic in places that could do with metal. :S I'm going to take it up with ASUS Netherlands once my blood pressure comes within more or less normal limits.

We should track our own and any subsequent replies over time ... as long as it takes ... really ASUS should consider recalling these to reinforce the pins. Its highly likely some will witness their tablet fall off the dock and smash in front of their eyes... while assuming they forgot to secure it properly!
I have confirmed that It was plastic materials.
When it first happened to me about 1.5 months ago, ( at that Time, I didn't know why it was doing that)
I noticed that my Tf700 does not lock properly, doesn't make a clicking sound, doesn't hold the device in place,,,and etc.
So at that point, i decided to pull it out of the key board ( i always had it with my keyboard as it was mostly used for my university lectures)
As soon as I pulled it out, i noticed that plastic pieces about ~5mm fall out.
So as of now, my solution was to have an armour-like screen protector and skinomi carbon series (to add a bit of bulk).
It doesn't lock in, but it s enough to have friction to hold it in place a lil more nicely.
I used quite a few strips of heavy-duty doublesided tape.

Yep, I found the piece of plastic too, which is what made me look for where it came from.
I have gotten into contact with ASUS Support in the Netherlands, and without even seeing what the issue is, they said that as far as they are concerned, it is user-induced damage and therefore not covered by warranty. I am planning of getting into contact with my lawyers and just have a talk if this is something they'd be able to crack open. I'll let you guys know the outcome of said talk.
Sent from a comfortable chair from the outer ring of Purgatory. The red guy asked me to say 'hi'.
the problem i started having with my dock is ill clip it in and close it. when i come back to it and open it up the screen doesnt want to come on even if i press the power button. if anyone knows a solution for this let me know please it would be greatly appreciated.

When you say rotate it to the right do you mean lift the right side and turn the tablet anti-clockwise and then the left clip comes free...
or do you mean lift the left side and rotate it clockwise (right) and the left clip comes free? :cyclops:

Choice 2. My left clip is broken, so the left side can lift free. Doing so causes it to rotate clockwise (right).

On mine, both clips have degraded severely. However, the release from the dock is right side first.
Broken left clip here... I noticed it today. And I'm pissed. What a BIG FAIL from Asus. I won't even bother trying to get it repaired, it's unlocked anyway.
I was beginning to love this thing since I installed CleanROM Inheritence... It's was a nice and fast tab. Well, now it's a broken and fast tab. I'm thinking of selling it before it falls into pieces. It's sad because I love the size, the keyboard, Android, etc.
The right clip will probably fail soon too. What a let down...

Twisting of the device

Anybody else getting their device twisted? I have noticed several times now my phone isn't sitting flat on the table, I pick it up and look at it and its obviously twisted just a tiny bit so that two opposite corners are touching the table and I can rock it back it forth slightly... I can easily bend it back flat with minimal force and it sits dead flat. Pop it in my pocket for a few hours and it's twisted slightly again.
Not sure if this is a real issue, or just normal by design.
Not yet. Mine still lays perfectly flat.
Mine is fine, but the whole 'polycarbonite' thing can be concerning... I know cases can suck, but for something like our define, it's necessary, sadly... But I guess that's what we get for not purchasing the actual Pixel 3 ??

Ill take something durable like Polycarbonite over a glass phone any day. It was a main reason I didnt go with the Zenfone 6, OP7 Pro, and Pixel 3 XL. Heavy and delicate is not a good combo.

Nope... I have tried various things now that I have noticed it, like putting it in different pockets, and it still twists a little bit. Seems to be engineered that way, it never flexes very much and doesn't seem to be any damage to anything (so far).

Ah, that's annoying! I haven't noticed it since, but was super annoyed when I first noticed it as I came from a Nexus 6P which also bent, but bent permanently
Mine has the same problem. I have had a case on this since the second week of owning it, previous to the case I never had this twist or bend problem.
Hell mine is in a Spigen case. It's been dropped, stepped on, and still it lays flat.. Mine gets flung around all the time in my work truck.. It hits the floor more than it stays on the dash. That's probably why it gets stepped on a lot.. Me not knowing it's there until I actually look for it and find it under my feet. LOL
have the same "problem". for me it's just a little annoying having to unbend it sometimes. I recently bought a rhino shield case, and since then it didn't happened again... but sometimes I use it without the case and at the end of the day it's twisted like crazy, always to de same side...
it's just plastic after all, I'll take it over glass and metal phones any day

You realize the phone itself isn't completely flat, right? The camera extends past the rest of the phone case.
If you have your phone in a case, it may also not be completely flat. I have my phone in a Spegin case and the trim around the camera stick out slightly farther than the rest of the case.
Bending the phone so that it lays completely flat may actually be introducing a bend into the phone!

Phone doesnt unfold flat, or completely.

Hey guys so I bought my z fold 2 about a month ago on ebay. I got a pretty good deal on a Verizon variant because they unlock after 60 days. Well today I was playing with my phone and I realized that mine doesn't open up completely flat. There's a slight angle to it. I'm too scared to try trying to give it a little force to open all the way because I dont want to break something. I guess I can take it in to get repaired but it doesn't really affect it functionally. It just messes with my ocd bad that it's not completely flat when opened. It's just a slight angle you wouldnt even notice it unless you looked for it but I know it does indeed not open all the way because my mother in law and father in law both have the z fold 2 and theirs opens flat unlike mine.
Also I've had the most expensive spigen case on it since day 1 and I've been extremely careful to keep it clean and free of dirt and stuff so I'm not sure exactly what it is going on. My main concern is since I bought it on ebay I won't be able to use the warranty to get it fixed right? Or will I be able to. And if anyone has any ideas maybe I can fix it I'm open to suggestions. Thanks guys.

The angle you are mentioning is from the inside or outside after unfolding?
Mine is flat from the inside but when u put it on a desk both sides will not touch the table.
My screen isn't flat. It has a slight angle to it. Like say if the left half is flat. The right half curves upwards just slightly. Like I said it doesnt affect it functionaly but it kills my ocd knowing it should be straight.
So I was messing with my phone right now and I go to unfold it and it like snapped open completely. There's no angle anymore. It's flat. Idk what happened or what was wrong with it or what fixed it or if the problem will come back but I thought I'd let you guys know.

It doesn't do it anymore but yes when it was doing it even without the case it would not open all the way
Did you ever resolve this? I've had the same issue with my fold 3. I believe it opened 180 degrees when I first got it a fee weeks ago. Then I noticed one day that it only opens to about 175 now. Everything works, but it is annoying
I'm getting the same issue not sure what it is but I have a theory. I just came from outside where it is cold(Winter) then when I come into my home to unfold my zfold2, It wouldn't open all the way. By any chance was it winter in your area when this occurred?
Gotta replace your whole folding screen
Hi there! A guy on Reddit said that he managed to fix it using his vacuum cleaner. He kept on vacuuming the hinge several times a day for a week, and he finally managed to make it open 180ยบ flat again. My wife has this same issue. I'm gonna try this.
Anyway, I feel like this foldable smartphones are still in "beta". There are too many issues with the screen (bubbles, vivid pixels, strange lines, dust inside the hinge mechanism...). And Samsung's service is absolutely poor. Would never recommend the Z Flip, even though it's a fast phone with nice cameras.
Fold the phone, then carefully slide a piece of a sticky note in the gap between the hinge and the front/rear Cover an move slowly towards the top of the phone. You may have to repeat this process several times until all dust, hair and other unwanted stuff comes out. Tested working on Z Fold2, where it is slightly easier due to the bigger gap and the Fold3. Both phones fully unfold again.
I keep doing this once in a while to keep the phones in this condition
i have the same issue as well, if you google it ... it seems to be quite a common issue .. I tried to use those can air blowers .. which didn't really help and my inner screen starts flicking after a few days
Sent the phone back to samsung and requested for them to clean the hinge, but was told I need to replace the entire hinge for about 550 USD.

I should have left mine alone cuz I made it worse paper is too weak and tears inside so I guess I made an expensive paperweight.

Question Screen pop/snap/tap sound

Took my 3 weeks old flip to get fixed because of the popping sound it made. When opened, just below the grease, on the right edge of the phone. When I slide my finger or press on the spot, it gives a pop sound (and feeling to the finger). You can feel the screen moving up and down and after you lift your finger, it pops off from the residue/glue under the display. It is like there is a tape that does not stick.
There is a reddit post about this so this is just an extra data about the defect, just in case if Samsung won't repair or something.
So, it would be nice to hear if someone else has this problem too. Thanks.
Mine just did it last night, it's on the right side too, where I've seen the others. I'm gonna do my best to ignore it lmao
My first unit had this problem too, it wouldn't lay completely flat when open either. I think the popping/screen detachment might be related to the hinges not opening fully cause whenever I'd force it open flat, the screen wouldn't pop anymore. In the end I returned it and my new one is perfect, no popping and it lays flat. If this is happening to yours, either return it or get it fixed.

Never realized it was supposed to lay completely flat. No popping, so I guess it doesn't matter.
I'm pretty sure the root of this issue is hinge unevenness(if that's a word) side-to-side, I put a spigen hinge film on the other day and it's very noticable in the indent across the middle of the film from the phone pinching against it. The side with the pop is closing further and pressing a groove into the film while the other side is a barely visible line. I'll try to post a pic later I traded in all of my old phones for this one lmao

Also mine went away today, screen 100% back to normal. I got my phone thoroughly wet in the shower today trying to get dust out of the edges, might be related might not. At any rate, good to know that it's not a big deal, if you have this issue it just might fix itself after a week
I have the same on mine. It only affects the lower left quadrant. Pretty annoying.
