dissasembling an HTC inspire- stuff behind screen! - HTC Inspire 4G

wondering if anyone has ever dissasembled thier inspire before....if its hard, tricky, details.
wierd thing, i dropped my phone yesterday, as it was falling i fumbled for it, smacked it up agains the wall in my house. Bits of drywall got wedged between the screen and the body of the phone, as i was trying to get it out with a thin knife, some of it dropped down inside the phone. i want to get it out because i have a feeling it will ende up making white dust in my screen.
another reason id like to get it open is to see if i can get the bottom right coner of the phone re-secured. its loose and floats up and down.

DO NOT DO THIS! Not that you don't have the ability to do so...But because this phone has not been on the market for a year yet. the screen coming up is a defect. Get it replaced.
EDIT: A EXTREMELY slight movement is normal. It has to give to be stable. It's kind of the same concept behind a wooden roller coaster. Some, very minor flex is required, as it actually supplies more structural integrity. Now...If you had a knife under the screen, that is far too much flex, and should in fact be replaced.

lol i think you are misunderstanding me, i was just trying to scrape the drywall from the little gap between the body and the screen on the left side fo the phone, i wasnt prying under it. the bottom right corner is something seperate. its not coming completely apart but it flexes noticeable up and down and make the screen turn funny colors there. ive read that its a common thing, but its not bad enough for me to want to send my phone in for replacement. i didnt get it from at&t

Ah ok. I understand now. And I know what you need to get ALL of it out in seconds! You need Cyber Clean. I got some for Christmas and this stuff is amazing! Attached is what to look for. You can find it at Target normally in a little pouch. Got mine from thinkgeek and got a whole tub.
Damn...I sounded like Billy Mays there for a second. haha

i've been thinking about getting that stuff, i guess i will now though but i really need it to clean out under my macs keyboard

Yeah...
You really don't want to try to tackle taking this phone apart.. it is prolly one of the hardest phones to do.

Funny my screen "flexes" on the bottom right corner. It really bugs me, its stupid, but I wish I could fix it. It pops up, then I push it down. It's stays for less than 10min and pops back up. I'm not sure if its worth the hassle to call HTC.

I used a clamp on mine last night. Placed a cloth between it and the phone and let the clamp do its thing for about 10 hours before taking it off this morning. I can see and tell a noticeable improvement. No flex. But only time will tell if this did the trick or not. So far after 3 hours it has not come up at the corner.

will HTC really replace the phone over this corner issue? i dont think im going to be able to get the drywall out of my phone and its really bugging me, its wedged in theere HARD. hard enought to make the body of the phone flex away from the side of the screen......and there some thin plastic layer between the phone body and the side of the screen.....which i have messed up by trying to scrape the drywall out with a knife. boo. phone works perfectly but i hate the cosmetic issues

Have other people been having the screen coming up problem? Mine is so severe that I can see light bleed on the bottom right hand corner. Wonder if it's covered by AT&T warranty

I just started having this same proble.I am TIIIIIIIRRRRRREEEDDDDD of ATT's crap though. I have been on the phone with them for 32 hrs in 38 days with now 4 different phones and I LOVE the Inspire. I am having the same issues now though where the screen is coming up and it's really really annoying. I mean REALLY annoying. I am thinking to just put an otter box defender on it and it will be fine? Can anyone confirm that the defender will keep the screen in place or any case for that matter?

I bought a silicon cover for $2 shipped off ebay and I didn't notice this issue until I just checked after reading this thread. The cover adds some serious bulk to the phone, but kept it from breaking when I dropped it from upper chest level on concrete (I'm 5'11"... and I swiped too far and caught the edge with my thumb. I almost cried).
P.S. It still hit hard enough to gouge the metal through the thick silicon

Loose hinge fix?

so I'm beginning to accept the fact that there's not much I can really do about my loose hinge. the truth is, it doesn't really hinder me in during regular use at all. however, its frustrating that I know it could have been better.
I might be satisfied if there was some case or something that secured the screen when open a bit more. maybe something involving magnets. anybody heard of anything like this? anybody wanna brainstorm on how to improvise it?

Dude... forget about it. If its really that bad... return it. Magnets will ruin the built in compass and god knows what other parts. Bad idea. Its supposed to be floatly. Trust me... its a welcom addition compared to the mytouch slide keyboard. The g2 is pretty smooth and as long as it doesn't fall when you hold it in a normal position, who cares...
This is my first post, hehe
bought my G2 on the 6th from Tmo store, mine is pretty solid, not loose at all, upside down, 45 degree angle, the screen doesnt go nowhere, closed or open, if i dont push it, it doesnt move, not even if i forcefully flick it!
im sure you could get a new one from tmobile/htc if it really bothers u, but looking at videos on youtube of the faulty screen, it would sure as hell bother me! good luck!
I'm in the same boat as j.books here. I'm LOVING the phone and while the wiggly hinge isn't an issue in how I use my phone it is just annoying knowing that it could/should have been better. I don't think I'm going to go through the hassle of returning the phone; it runs so well, I'm really afraid to spit in it's eye. :S
I'd contact whoever you got the phone from. If it is terribly loose and wiggly it's either a factory defect, packing fault. Possibly also fault of carrier. Either way if it's that much of an issue you may as well take the time to get to the bottom of it and figure out who to contact for a replacement or where to send your back to get it fixed. It's inconvenient for the user so make that clear when you contact them and demand some compensation.
I called t-mo last week and went to a t-mo store. it wasn't a 'known issue' at that point, and the t-mo store was absolutely worthless in terms of advice. one person was rude, one was nice, but both told me to call customer support, even though I already had.
the more I use the phone, the less of an issue it is. but it still bothers me. esp now that I know some people don't have the loose hinge. my 2 weeks is up on monday so I'm gonna call today and see if I am able to exchange it. problem is, I really don't want to go the whole weekend without it :\

Take it apart, find the springs, and replace them with stronger ones. Other than that, your choices are replace it or live with it. Personally I'd replace the springs since I like to take things apart
Tell me how it goes don't see a G2 dis-assembly vid anywhere around

If you wanted to do this you need self adhesive magnet tape, thinest available less than 1mm or I don't think this mod will help.
Disclaimer. I haven't tried this but am sure it will work.
Cut tape to 2 1/4" x 1/2"
Cut 1/8" wide notch @ 1" to the right of left/rear edge.
Depth of notch [email protected] 1/4" ( the notch is for the small microswitch that senses the phone is closed, this switch also creates the limiting factor of magnet thickness. Bend the hoop upward you say? )
Test fit before you remove the backing ( magnet tape is placed between ribbon cable on left and 3rd hinge on right with notch around the microswitch. )
Good Luck!
PS this mod will hold the screen open and closed with no effect in between. I don't think it'll effect the compass because there is already tons of EMI in these devices, also you can recalibrate the compass and since the magnet is static it should compensate. Again good luck! And post pics if anyone is brave enough to attempt.

thanks dude. I was thinking of something like that, but I wasn't sure any magnetic tape would be thin enough. I looked it up and they never seem to specify the thickness, but there are products described as 'extra thin,' such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Extra-Flexible-Adhesive-Magnetic-Dispenser/dp/B000NNQ1CK ...think it would work?

Umm.... yep that looks like it'll do. When you get it stick some on wax paper, flip upside down, get one of those 6" metal "machinist rulers" , do your layout with a sharp pencil, and cut with exacto knife or new utility blade, test fit before removing wax paper(also compass, gps, etc function). Maybe use some cardboard pieces to hold the hinge open, getting the magnet into position will be the hardest part. Good luck and post pics/review.
This idea really appeals to my inner hacker.

Do It!!! I would do it myself but I'm actually happy with my hinge and have to many other projects in the pipeline at the moment.
Apart from magnetic tape, we can also consider velcro/hook & loop
just stick a little at the back of the screen and the upper part of the keyboard
not too much to avoid noise/falling hair/forceful push
just the amount that keeps the screen in position anytime will do

Has anyone else noticed this? back cover issue

When you hold your back cover up to the light you can see a bunch off little cuts. What are these!?!? They're driving me crazy even though I can't see them in sunlight or anything else except indoor lights. Like really close. I haven't dropped it yet or even set it on a table.
Does anyone else have these and what are they?!!

Your funny.
I'm not even sure what you mean by little cuts. Any chance of posting a pic that shows them?
My phone's been treated fairly gently, but not with kid gloves. If I look really hard in the right kind of lighting I can see a few micro-scratches on the shiny plastic back. I see the same thing on my shiny black iPhone 3gs and my Galaxy S i9000.

I suppose they could be scratches from rough cloth....from putting the phone in your pocket and taking it out.
I haven't really noticed them on my phone, though I can't say they'd bother me all that much if I had to hold the thing in the light just right.

Are they in any kind of swirling pattern?
I suspect they're just remnants of the manufacturing/packaging process. Either that or just a (bad) side effect of using shiny black plastic backs. Like I said, even my iPhone(s) with it's ceramic/plastic back have the same thing, especially the black one.
Thanks for the replies guys.
Yeah I can barely notice them, it just bothers me that I've babied this phone and it somehow got little scratches.

I know how you feel. If you're really worried about scratches, you could put an "invisible shield" or other protector on the back only (I don't use them on the front ever). I put one on my Galaxy S i9000 after about 6 weeks because it really started getting scuffed up. The plastic on the NS looks similar, so this may be a concern down the road if you want to keep it looking pristine.
Thanks for the "thanks" button push, btw.

3. Receive new phone under no questions asked replacement plan.
4.
If this isn't an option. I'm not sure about the diagrams. I tried looking them up in the service tech's stuff and he doesn't even have them yet. It's still too new, since none of them are out of warranty yet. It sounds painful, though. Sorry you have had to go through that already.

Uh, yeah no phone replacement unless you have the family premium plus plan for an extra $40 a month.
Still not sure how it cracked, no visible damage and the outer screen is intact with no scratches at all.
I found a link for anybody that might need it. Check out repair universe dot com.
3 days after a friend got her mesmerize she droped it on the side walk. Her screen is reallly messed up now still runs and it still responsive to touch just has about 30 cracks in it looks like a broken mirror.
Couldn't you just call and sign up for the insurance and then file a claim? All they do is call you to make sure the phone works. There's no way for them to know it's already broke.

Yea mine screen crack also. In process on removing the glass from the lcd screen. Was going to put it back together after I get the glass off and see if it will still work. I know it was still working before just couldn't read anything because of all the cracks in the cover glass.
What do you do to break the glass?
Mine broke when I threw it onto my desk. Dumb move by myself but I didn't even put any force behind it really and i've always done it with my other phones. Think it broke because I wasn't paying enough attention and it laided on a glass glass plate. Sound like a explosion when it hit. The back flew off and bat fell out. My bat is now bowed oddly enough. For if you sit it in the phone the bow make it so it will not sit flush. It is not swelling but actually bowed. Because the other side is now equally bowing in as the other side is bowing out.

Naw don't have the plan(I have no service with it got it just to use as a test bed) just gonna order a replacement screen. Saw one for $100 including shipping. I didn't pay anything for it so paying $100 to fix screen no real big deal.
I wanted to play around with one before I actually gotten service with one. I like it ok. Main thing I wanted to do is try and replace the rear facing cam with a nicer one. If I can get a rear cam in it like the EVO has then I gonna get my lady one and prob get one for myself(the BOGO deal ya know.) Really my only complaint with the phone is its 5mp cam. I have a friend with the EVO and it has a 8mp cam and the pictures just seem so much nicer. That is only thing my wife complained about also. As she wants a phone with a really good cam for she can use it for her photographing hobby.

Don't Drop it???

Ordered a few cases today to try out a couple different vendors.
Unfortunately I didn't order them last week like i should have....
N5 felt about 15-18 inchs onto pavement as it slide of my leg. hitting the corner and landing face down. Landing face down
I thought it would have scratched a bit but not have a this chip taken out... Plastic around the glass seems as soft as it is to the touch..

why are you amazed over that? Hate to tell you this but that damage is pretty much what you would expect out of any phone. Just count your blessings that the screen was fine.
OP you are ridiculous. Drop a lg g2 like that or a s4 then you will see how they end up. This phone is very well built and that is the least that can happen to most recent smartphones nowadays. So save your whinning and better edit that title with all those !!!! Afterall it is not the phones fault that you dropped it.
I got a warning from a mod for putting my question thread on the wrong section (here instead of the QA).
But yet the OP doesn't get anything.
This thread is completely pointless. ...I mean "Don't drop it! " ...?? I think everyone who bought the phone knew that before they even paid for it.
And why are you shocked ? you dropped it on a pavement! ..it's not rocket science.
In fact , that's actually impressive , only a small damage...the phone is really tough for something that's not IPwhatever certified like the Xperias

Thank You OP!
I'd say that's come out of it pretty well. The plastic band has taken the impact and not passed a lot of energy through to the glass, thus it stayed intact.
"don't drop it" indeed, as if anyone goes out of the house thinking, "you know what, I'll bounce my N5 like a basketball today"
Thanks for advice, i was thinking to drop my phone.
Honestly, not that bad. And easily covered up and hidden with a case. Consider yourself lucky.
So in other words, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the sky is blue, water is wet, fire is hot, etc etc....
I have to say this phone is well built or I am extremely lucky. I dropped mine from about 3 feet and it fell flat on its back. My heart fell to the floor with it but when I picked it up there was no damage at all. Absolutely no scratches, cracked screen, broken camera, or rattles. So far it seems as if everything is working as it should.:good:
well isnt it obvious that when u drop a phone u will end up scratching it or shattering the screen?

"HTC" Letters on Back

Just recently the "T" and the "C" on my HTC M8 rubbed off. They were a thin material glued on, and it appears the glue came loose. Both the "T" and the "C" came off at the same time as I ran my thumb over them. My phone wasn't unusually hot at the time.
I'm not sure if my phone got too hot too many times and loosened the glue, or the build quality just wasn't up to standard.
The Verizon store I bought this from was unable to warranty the phone, since this didn't hinder my use of the phone at all.
I've had the phone since April, and I've taken good care of it: no scratches or dents so far. I'm disappointed that the Verizon store won't replace or repair the phone.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

If you're not joking, how'd you manage to get them off? I can't seem to get the "H" off to make it even.
hairdryer and needle; only tools i had available at the time. the hairdryer heats up enough to loosen adhesive but not to hot to damage anything.
Yup, my "C" fell off. No idea where it went. Bummer. I want to replace the entire back housing (I have a few small knicks and a very tiny dent), but it will probably just end up happening again.
EDIT: I used a hairdryer to take off the "H" and the "T" to make it more uniform. It does look a bit better since they are all removed now, but I like it better before. Adhering the "H" and the "T" wouldn't be a big deal because I still have them, but I have no idea where the "C" went to. I hope it doesn't hurt resale value when I try to sell it for the M9 next year.
Happened to me about a month ago. Definitely think it was hear related as it was the hottest time of the year. I used a black sharpie to color in where the letters use to be. You can't even really tell the difference.

Care to take a picture? Id like to see that. Thanks!
You can always call HTC. I know they replaced / repaired phones for the camera film issue and your still in the 6 month window for a free screen replacement. They might use that screen replacement warrenty to replace your letters instead. It's worth the call if it's bugging you enough. I got scratch on my screen that's bugging me that I'm going to try and use that warrenty on. Along with fixing the camera lenses. Had to scrape off the film and now it just looks nasty.

I should have a g2 here tomorrow I'll take a picture. Sending the m8 in for a screen repair.
I think it's awesome, when it happens to me I'm going to take advantage. Like those people with Toyotas that change it up to say Toy, or the Tacoma that they change to Taco.....

Don't go to the store.
Call - 1800-922-0204 - press 0, then 0 again - this brings you tova rep. And I don't see an issue getting refurb, worth a try anyway.
