Don't Drop it??? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ordered a few cases today to try out a couple different vendors.
Unfortunately I didn't order them last week like i should have....
N5 felt about 15-18 inchs onto pavement as it slide of my leg. hitting the corner and landing face down. Landing face down
I thought it would have scratched a bit but not have a this chip taken out... Plastic around the glass seems as soft as it is to the touch..

You're lucky you didn't end up like this drop test...

ouch, my case is on the way....gotta be more careful......the white n5 is sooooooo slipppery.....

why are you amazed over that? Hate to tell you this but that damage is pretty much what you would expect out of any phone. Just count your blessings that the screen was fine.

OP you are ridiculous. Drop a lg g2 like that or a s4 then you will see how they end up. This phone is very well built and that is the least that can happen to most recent smartphones nowadays. So save your whinning and better edit that title with all those !!!! Afterall it is not the phones fault that you dropped it.

I got a warning from a mod for putting my question thread on the wrong section (here instead of the QA).
But yet the OP doesn't get anything.
This thread is completely pointless. ...I mean "Don't drop it! " ...?? I think everyone who bought the phone knew that before they even paid for it.
And why are you shocked ? you dropped it on a pavement! ..it's not rocket science.
In fact , that's actually impressive , only a small damage...the phone is really tough for something that's not IPwhatever certified like the Xperias

So if I understand you correctly..... If I drop the phone onto a hard surface, it may get damaged? Thanks for the heads up.

And yet another tread to make the search for actual issues that much less effective.
Thank You OP!

I'd say that's come out of it pretty well. The plastic band has taken the impact and not passed a lot of energy through to the glass, thus it stayed intact.
"don't drop it" indeed, as if anyone goes out of the house thinking, "you know what, I'll bounce my N5 like a basketball today"

Thanks for advice, i was thinking to drop my phone.

Honestly, not that bad. And easily covered up and hidden with a case. Consider yourself lucky.

So in other words, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the sky is blue, water is wet, fire is hot, etc etc....

I have to say this phone is well built or I am extremely lucky. I dropped mine from about 3 feet and it fell flat on its back. My heart fell to the floor with it but when I picked it up there was no damage at all. Absolutely no scratches, cracked screen, broken camera, or rattles. So far it seems as if everything is working as it should.:good:

well isnt it obvious that when u drop a phone u will end up scratching it or shattering the screen?

Results from a similar drop with my S3... screen cracked. Never spread though and didn't cause any usage problems so I dealt with it for months

oh man. i remember throwing one directly to the ground when I was upset and it still worked after, haha. It didn't have a 5 inch screen on it either. in fact, the screen wasn't even on the outside.
The N5 looks less fragile than the N4, so we'll see.

Things generally break, chip, crack when you drop them onto a hard surface specifically the concrete.

dissasembling an HTC inspire- stuff behind screen!

wondering if anyone has ever dissasembled thier inspire before....if its hard, tricky, details.
wierd thing, i dropped my phone yesterday, as it was falling i fumbled for it, smacked it up agains the wall in my house. Bits of drywall got wedged between the screen and the body of the phone, as i was trying to get it out with a thin knife, some of it dropped down inside the phone. i want to get it out because i have a feeling it will ende up making white dust in my screen.
another reason id like to get it open is to see if i can get the bottom right coner of the phone re-secured. its loose and floats up and down.

DO NOT DO THIS! Not that you don't have the ability to do so...But because this phone has not been on the market for a year yet. the screen coming up is a defect. Get it replaced.
EDIT: A EXTREMELY slight movement is normal. It has to give to be stable. It's kind of the same concept behind a wooden roller coaster. Some, very minor flex is required, as it actually supplies more structural integrity. Now...If you had a knife under the screen, that is far too much flex, and should in fact be replaced.

lol i think you are misunderstanding me, i was just trying to scrape the drywall from the little gap between the body and the screen on the left side fo the phone, i wasnt prying under it. the bottom right corner is something seperate. its not coming completely apart but it flexes noticeable up and down and make the screen turn funny colors there. ive read that its a common thing, but its not bad enough for me to want to send my phone in for replacement. i didnt get it from at&t

Funny my screen "flexes" on the bottom right corner. It really bugs me, its stupid, but I wish I could fix it. It pops up, then I push it down. It's stays for less than 10min and pops back up. I'm not sure if its worth the hassle to call HTC.

I used a clamp on mine last night. Placed a cloth between it and the phone and let the clamp do its thing for about 10 hours before taking it off this morning. I can see and tell a noticeable improvement. No flex. But only time will tell if this did the trick or not. So far after 3 hours it has not come up at the corner.

will HTC really replace the phone over this corner issue? i dont think im going to be able to get the drywall out of my phone and its really bugging me, its wedged in theere HARD. hard enought to make the body of the phone flex away from the side of the screen......and there some thin plastic layer between the phone body and the side of the screen.....which i have messed up by trying to scrape the drywall out with a knife. boo. phone works perfectly but i hate the cosmetic issues

Have other people been having the screen coming up problem? Mine is so severe that I can see light bleed on the bottom right hand corner. Wonder if it's covered by AT&T warranty
I just started having this same proble.I am TIIIIIIIRRRRRREEEDDDDD of ATT's crap though. I have been on the phone with them for 32 hrs in 38 days with now 4 different phones and I LOVE the Inspire. I am having the same issues now though where the screen is coming up and it's really really annoying. I mean REALLY annoying. I am thinking to just put an otter box defender on it and it will be fine? Can anyone confirm that the defender will keep the screen in place or any case for that matter?
I bought a silicon cover for $2 shipped off ebay and I didn't notice this issue until I just checked after reading this thread. The cover adds some serious bulk to the phone, but kept it from breaking when I dropped it from upper chest level on concrete (I'm 5'11"... and I swiped too far and caught the edge with my thumb. I almost cried).
P.S. It still hit hard enough to gouge the metal through the thick silicon

I drop my phone so much....

It's amazing this thing still works..... These htc phones are built like tanks. I mean it flies apart cover goes flying the batterry goes flying I must drop this thing from a height of no less than 3 feet bout 3-4 times a month and usually its in my lap and i stand up and it gets launched with a bit of velocity too. sheeesh

Well everyone makes a lemon once in a while ... I mean ive dropped this thing 30 times atleast since ive owned it . ATLEAST as i said from no less than 3 ft and it works perfect.
Maybe it's the rom? I am running bulletproof xD
I've had mine since August 6th of last year - in all that time and being in the legitimate top % of time actively being used, i've dropped it exactly 1 time, and that was because a bucket fell off of a scaffold onto me.
It was in the trident case when it happened, and it's okay - that ate the force of the fall.
You sound like you need to put it on a lighter leash man, or something like that
You need at minimum a trident case, and you should probably get some kind of padded pouch to keep it in. (well, that's what I do, and most don't - but it might be worth you looking into)
I lol'd at the bulletproof comment. Glad it's serving you well ( the phone, and the ROM)
I drop mine more than [your provider's name] drops calls in rural Ethiopia. I mean the thing is like it's slippery as Hell, but every time, it hits the ground, the back comes off flying, the battery slips out, the keyboard slings open. I was just as bad with my old G1 and it worked for 3 years. Then one more drop to the asphalt and the radio lost about half its signal in all bands. Couldn't keep calls or data for more than a few seconds at a time. Anyway, I have been impressed by HTC for the two phones I've had.
On an aside, my father in law has a G1 still. Bronze. Got it the same day I got mine. Mine looks like R. Lee Ermey (or maybe Gary Bussey on a good day); his still looks like a very young George Clooney.
I don't know what it is, but I think it's the fact I'm always trying not to smudge the screen so I pick it up by the edges like a CD. Come to think of it, I drop CDs a lot too.
OMG, I dropped my phone today
Sitting in lecture, slipped right out of my pocket and hit the rough plaster floor behind the chair. Battery cover came off and battery was out.
The first time I have dropped a phone in nearly two years
God is crying today
Bottom corner of steel rim has a small scuff now about the size of a pencil eraser :'(
Man, if you all seen my phone, you would swear I bought it at the scratch and dent special.
At least twice a week I leave it on my lap and hop out the car and there goes my phone, the outer green edge on my camera lens is chipped to hell and back, all 4 corners are destroyed now to the 3 falls it took just today and this thing still runs like it came from the box yesterday.

Close calls....Post them!

Everyone share your stories for close calls relating to the potential destruction of your phone. I'll begin.
Today I was on the second story of my home with my phone on the windowsill. There's a highway about 300 yards from this window, and from it I can hear the gentle ambiance of passing motorists. My phone was resting on the windowsill as I heard loud screeching followed by a thunderous crash. I opened my window to see the extent of the damage and my phone fell two stories to the ground below. Luckily it fell right onto a patch of grass, missing concrete by less than 2 feet. The feeling of dread quickly turned to relief as I picked up my face up non damaged phone.
Lets hear your horror stories!
2 stories fall with no damage? Even with grass that's a big fall. Consider yourself very lucky!
Wow. Did you use a case?

Thats why I felt inspired to post! Everywhere I look I see cracked screens, and I consider myself supernaturally lucky to never have damaged a phone from a fall (although one of my old clamshell's hinge broke once while opening it oddly enough). I want to hear about others who spat in the face of physics and got lucky.

Oddly enough I just switched from one of those bulky otterbox type protectors to a flimsy $2 rubber skin a week or so ago to conserve pocket space. I was mostly mad at myself, I usually handle my phone more carefully than a mother handles a newborn. I did drop my old droid 2 a couple times but never had more than a scratched screen protector.
Third day I had my GSIII I had it plugged into my home theater with an aux cord, listening to music. Was sitting on a shelf about 6 feet up, landscape mode, propped against a CD book. Don't know if the vibration from music shook it loose, but I turned my back and then heard a nice solid SMACK on my concrete floor. Phone slid off the shelf and landed face down...Not a scratch or crack on it. I was amazed.

I am so afraid to even have a close call...The S3 seems so fragile. I wish I could use it neked.
well in theory all cell phones are just as fragile. For the most part they all have the same delicate hardware inside that isn't meant to absord shock. Some of them may have a sturdier exterior than others but they're ruggedness may be in our head.

So my burning question: why on earth was your phone on a windowsill when the window was open? Were you asking for trouble? Death wish, perhaps?
The first day I had my GS III, I had it plugged in, in the kitchen, my dog came running through the house, and snagged the charger and sent the phone and charger flying, luckily the only thing that broke was the charger.

My favorite close call though has to be when I was standing next to a pool messing with my phone and it slipped out of my hands. It was over the water and out of instinct (no idea why this was my instinct) kicked the phone. The phone flew across the pool (10-15 ft) and a friend who was on the other side caught it. The case had come off the corner slightly but phone was working perfectly.

Physical Drop & Scratch Resistance Report

Hi everyone,
The Essential company claims that the phone is very drop and scratch resistant thanks to the premium materials used in the phone, but sadly there are no official Essential drop tests available anywhere which is mainly due to all the problems Essential seems to be having with supplies and rolling out their first manufactured devices. There are also some reports surfacing from the very early adopters of the phone of some scuffs and scratches which never go beyond a mere mention.
I thought I would start this thread where people who have the phone can report about how the phone handles inadvertent drops and scratches and scuffs to the screen and the ceramic back. When posting, please also include a little bit of explanation as to how it happened and if possible a picture of the supposed damages to the phone.
Cheers.
dropped mine twice. 2 nicks in screen, but ceramic and titanium are fine.

I watched the video. Mous of 7 or better on the ceramic. The finish in the titanium can be damaged but noting like aluminum.
Forget about bending the phone. The phone is pretty tough. A case will protect th cosmetics.
https://www.cnet.com/videos/we-destroyed-the-essential-phone/
Seems like this will be a very durable device.
Ya for what its worth it is way way way better than any aluminum phone would do. This they got right but its the software and camera that hold it back

My only complaint is the camera software.
Other than that, I don't have any issues.
I would like a case, but only for cosmetics.
Know what really does it for me? Stock Android is a bit too stock also. I have gotten really used to how the pixel works and really like it with all it's slight tweaks to stock.
The cameras sensors are still too small to be on the level of the the other flagships too. Not only software. The Google camera does pretty well though

I use Nova, so Android is never really stock for me.
I use Nova Launcher because I can restore my device layout on any device.
As far as the camera, I'm not that concerned about the quality.
For me it's a case of not having a better camera and just getting the picture is important.
If I really wanted a good photo, I'd use one of my"real" cameras.

I've dropped this phone in 1 week more than I've dropped my Pixel XL in the past 3 months, just because of how slippery the little bugger is. No damage as a result of dropping it, though.
I do have some very light scratches on the ceramic back, from sliding across my desk or countertop at home, which I was *not* expecting. Both the top, by the mod indentation holes, and at the bottom left, too. I know they aren't from dropping it, as every time it's fallen, it's landed on its side or a corner, never flat on its back.

It is definitely not the phone for everyone. Build quality is for everyone.
There are some software shortcomings. I think they can sort those out.
I sold my 6P. SO I have the Essential for the long haul.
I have my replacement phone arriving today. I have gone through 2 glass screen protectors that due to the fit of them (not sticking to the edges) I have a nick in the glass at the top left and the screen is completely shattered on the bottom left, I can see gold metal under it and it has a crack running diagonally from left to right from the bottom left. I know I never dropped this phone from more than 2 feet high. I also have the scratches on the ceramic back near the mods ports. I've only used my 360 a couple of times. I'm definitely getting a case and moving to a plastic wet install screen protector.
I haven't dropped this phone yet, but I have several hairline scratches on the back ceramic. I guess I'm around a lot of minerals or dust particles that are > 8 hardness, which I find interesting.
Also on the glass I notice a patch of hairline scratches. I'm usually real careful about my phones (of course, everyone says this) but I think that's more of Corning's fault this time around. They're really small but knowing they're there bothers me. I wish I could buff them out. I'll be getting a screen protector I guess.

So I actually was checking out these:

Was tired of all my phones falling out if my pockets or slipping thru my hands...

Oh wow, those are cool
My back panel got scratched (micro scratches) that's so weird. Got ceramic Xiaomi mi2 and it was perfectly strong....not like this one.
I dropped mine screen facing the floor from about 4 feet. Screen survived, minor scratches. Not a single crack. I didn't expect the screen to survive.

I have a step from main floor to foyer. Placed my phone near the edge and my dog pushed it down to tiles. Face down smashed!
2 line of scratches at the bottom bezel.
small dings on top left and bottom left corner display.
Sigh... thought it would survive...

Twisting of the device

Anybody else getting their device twisted? I have noticed several times now my phone isn't sitting flat on the table, I pick it up and look at it and its obviously twisted just a tiny bit so that two opposite corners are touching the table and I can rock it back it forth slightly... I can easily bend it back flat with minimal force and it sits dead flat. Pop it in my pocket for a few hours and it's twisted slightly again.
Not sure if this is a real issue, or just normal by design.
Not yet. Mine still lays perfectly flat.
Mine is fine, but the whole 'polycarbonite' thing can be concerning... I know cases can suck, but for something like our define, it's necessary, sadly... But I guess that's what we get for not purchasing the actual Pixel 3 ??

Ill take something durable like Polycarbonite over a glass phone any day. It was a main reason I didnt go with the Zenfone 6, OP7 Pro, and Pixel 3 XL. Heavy and delicate is not a good combo.

I miss my OnePlus 3 which was aluminium.. that was and always will be my favorite phone from back in the day and it was great!
I noticed this on the day I bought mine, but straightened it out and haven't noticed it since - thought I was the only one!

Nope... I have tried various things now that I have noticed it, like putting it in different pockets, and it still twists a little bit. Seems to be engineered that way, it never flexes very much and doesn't seem to be any damage to anything (so far).

Ah, that's annoying! I haven't noticed it since, but was super annoyed when I first noticed it as I came from a Nexus 6P which also bent, but bent permanently
Mine has the same problem. I have had a case on this since the second week of owning it, previous to the case I never had this twist or bend problem.
Hell mine is in a Spigen case. It's been dropped, stepped on, and still it lays flat.. Mine gets flung around all the time in my work truck.. It hits the floor more than it stays on the dash. That's probably why it gets stepped on a lot.. Me not knowing it's there until I actually look for it and find it under my feet. LOL
have the same "problem". for me it's just a little annoying having to unbend it sometimes. I recently bought a rhino shield case, and since then it didn't happened again... but sometimes I use it without the case and at the end of the day it's twisted like crazy, always to de same side...
it's just plastic after all, I'll take it over glass and metal phones any day

You realize the phone itself isn't completely flat, right? The camera extends past the rest of the phone case.
If you have your phone in a case, it may also not be completely flat. I have my phone in a Spegin case and the trim around the camera stick out slightly farther than the rest of the case.
Bending the phone so that it lays completely flat may actually be introducing a bend into the phone!
