Ever since upgrading to Lollipop, my phone has become a huge pain in the ass.
Music will shut off randomly. I wonder if this is some kind of garbage cleaning behind the scenes, because Pandora/Music/Spotify will all just cut out at random.
The battery life is beyond awful. I can't last a normal workday anymore.
Performance sucks. Everything has a slight delay. Random freezes all over. Google play store takes absolute ages to get anything done.
I don't know. Am I alone?

Well...in my house I have a G3, M8 and Note 4 on Lollipop and do not see your issues. All the issues you mention seem to relate to transfer of data. Are you on wifi? Is the router going bad? Are you on LTE? how many bars? These all seem to be signal related issues, especially batter drain, not Lollipop.
My s5 is snappier since lollipop, all in all its better imho

I am in 100% agreement. Since the update, my phone (and my wife's GS5) is borderline unusable. It reboots randomly a few times a day, usually when I am actually relying on it for something. It is slow to do anything and the battery is just terrible now.
I know that many will say to do a factory reset (I already cleared the cache on both and it did nothing), but that is a huge pain for us due to our work email, which is painful to have cleared and add back on.

Well ... You could look at it like this: What is more painful to deal with? Random reboots, lag, and general unreliability? Or the investment in time it would take to wipe it clean and start from scratch? Maybe a corporate store could help you to transfer and set up what is really important to you if you need technical help or you don't really have the time to sink into it. Just a thought.
The ota uograde may cause a lot of these issues. A fresh install of lollipop either from stock odin image or a Sprint technician is recommended. The last if you're not comfortable saving/backing up your phone.
I would have to agree. I was stock unrooted and took the OTA update to OA6. My phone was not very stable and would sometime hang on a boot forcing a battery pull. I wiped everything and flashed the [STOCK ROM][5.0] OA6 Android L Deodexed and my phone has been great since then.

Yeah, that is kind of a good point. I just keep hoping that they will update or "fix" something that will make it magically work again so that I don't have to install my corporate crap again. Probably wishful thinking though.
Wish that I could be rooted like I used to be and just use Titanium Backup, but work killed our ability to root if we want to use our phone there (amazing that little trick they have used on us...they no longer pay for phones or service, but we have to abide by all their rules if we really want to work extra hours and go above and beyond for them...such suckers we are).
Bit of an update: I installed the OA6 Stock rooted rom and cleared all of Sprint and Samsung's god awful apps. The phone runs great now. I was going home with 7% battery life before, now it's 40-50% despite the exact same usage patterns.
I can't really say whether it was the factory reset that happened in the process, or the removal of all the bloat. I was so fed up with "HEY USE YOUR PHONE AS A REMOTE" and "CHECK OUT THESE AWESOME UPDATES FROM SPRINT" notifications that I didn't bother testing the phone before removing all the crap.
But anyway, anyone who is having problems...consider trying this. My knox is 0x0 btw, the mobile odin trick works.
I actually bit the bullet and did a factory reset. It was somewhat painful, but in the end, worth it. It is much better now. My only remaining problem seems to be an issue with Spotify...It eventually causes random reboots when playing music.
My side annoyance with the factory reset...Google needs to backup everything for us to do this. It was annoying to have some things done by Google, some by Samsung, and worse, some not done at all. The process could be done much better.
Hmm.. I agree with the lack of satisfaction with Lollipop. I have problems with bluetooth, slow system, crap battery life, random crashes, loss of features I liked on KitKat, etc. I did use a clean, stock image and ran it unrooted for a while, but still had problems. I just finished rolling back to KitKat and will wait for 5.0 to be more stable before trying it again (or until the S6 comes out)

exactly after one year warranty just expired the phone became painfully slow
it was a brand new phone sent from samsung as a replacement for my broken phone replaced under warranty
had zero problems for a whole year and i mean zero like no issues with speed or freezing at all
never dropped or dipped in the water to test the water resistance
always in a case since day one. no crazy apps. actually same exact apps that i have on all my phones.
no new apps were installed before slowdown
i already deleted some apps. cleaned up app cache individually and reset cache from boot screen
tested in safe mode and still slow
im not sure if the update was installed recently or not but the slowdown happened about 2 months ago. was there a tmobile update at that time?

but this is the third phone that did this.
galaxy s5 that i also bought brand new for a year was well maintained and had no problems
that phone actually started lagging really bad and shutting down multiple times a week or restarting....
before that galaxy s3 did same thing. after exactly a year it became ridiculously slow for absolutely no reason
i install all the apps i use right out of the box. change all the settings to what i want and dont really make any changes after and it usually very stable for about a year

or an app that will show me what component is slowing down the system in real time?
obviously something is slowing down the OS, theres gotta be an app that can trace the faulty app or file or component

Have you been able to view the CPU activity and the RAM allocation?
I am not sure how to do this, but if possible, it might reveal what is happening.
I would try disabling some of the applications one by one. First suspects would be:
1. Facebook
2. Google Play Store.
3. Youtube.
Disable one, then try the phone. If still the same, disable second and try etc.

How is your device storage. Once you use more then 50% device storage android starts to lag. It's an issue with the OS.
device storage has always been about the same since brand new. which is about 80% on average.
doesnt safe mode disable all non stock apps? i tried safe mode with same result
windows has a resource monitor that helps alot but i dont know if android has any monitoring app that could help troubleshoot this
Samsung devices are known for getting laggy over time, try a different phone next time, in the meantime, do a factory reset and start fresh.

This is very suspect to me, but I am only a beginner.
Given zelendel's post about (re 50%), I would investigate further. Did you note his credentials?
What does all that data consist of?
What is the total storage capacity of the phone?
Perhaps some of that storage capacity is used as "swap" memory? Just guessing...........I am extrapolating Linux terminology here.

Depending on the amount of storage in your device that could be a lot.
Resetting the device wipes things. You really can't find an issue if the only issue is storage space. So here is a test. Remove stuff from your device. Give yourself a clean start and then go from there. Adding stuff slowly until it slows down.
I have had dozens of devices and the only time they ever got slow was due to getting low on phone storage.
This even encludes a 5 year old Samsung that I have that is as fast as the day I got it. Mind you there is nothing on it but some games for a kid. I even disabled all of Samsungs crap they install that slows a device down.
Could also be stuff acting up in the background
Run a log cat and see if anything is hanging.

theres a delay for every action
2 wifi seems to drop in and out now since it got slow
3 facebook and browser wouldnt load anything on wifi
but as soon as i switch to data it works
i have to restart the phone alot now and close all apps multiple times a day to get them to work
also running safe mode had no effect on speed
i dont know when the last update was from tmobile but it might have been due to crappy update im not sure at this point
i got the phone last end of summer and it worked flawlessly every single day up until last 2 months exactly when warranty expired

Hi, I was a Samsung user too and faced the same problem.
I went through various threads which gave me multiple solutions: rooting, removing bloatware, cpu monitoring and many more.
None of that worked. The phone was so slow that it was not usable.
Ultimately I had to throw it and buy another phone.
Then I noticed this is not just me, all Samsung users face the same problem even the flagship users.
I swear I'll never buy a Samsung phone and never let anyone buy one.

Phones use solid state storage, solid state storage decreases efficiency over time, they just break down the more that you install/uninstall/write/delete stuff to/from storage. With the way phones work, it is constantly reading/writing/dumping stuff to/from the cache partition(which is where everything that is loaded runs from and stores live data), this constant activity breaks down the efficiency of the cache partition, which cause lag during usage because it can't read to/from cache as efficiently as when it was new.
Also, as phones advance in hardware capability, certain apps(especially Google Play Services) are updated to the point that they require more from the hardware, older hardware can't run it/them as efficiently. Also, some older phones can't install some of the newer/more updated versions of apps, this leaves them using older versions which somewhere along the line are no longer supported, causing performance issues, especially a reduction in battery life and RAM speeds.
Laptops and PC are effected the same way, some older hardware can't install the newer versions of operating systems, or they can install the OS but certain parts of the software might have issues with certain pieces of older hardware and drivers, it just takes way longer with PC than it does with phones. Usually, the older systems are way past their prime before becomes an issue because users get new systems before they get that old, so they never see the performance issues that older hardware has with newer software.

i already did everything i know to figure out
i clear cache all teh time on the phone and on apps like facebook and other heavy apps
i keep the internal memory below 50% use

then few weeks ago it got even worse. apps hang all the time
dont update dont respond
for example besides being slow facebook and instagramm and other apps would not load updates or internet would not load pages
facebook wont load new comments and says retry connection
i close it with the left button menu and reopen and it works again for few hours and does same thing
its very fn frustrating why is there no good diagnostic software for android system after 10 years on the market is beyond me...
im tired of clearing cache and resetting everything. and tired of buying new phones all the time especially when this phone was over 700 dollars. **** like this shouldnt happen on a 700 dollar phone. i would espect a 150 dollar phone from costco to break in less than 2 years but not top of the line phone
I would personally recommend backing up anything on the phone important to you, then doing a full clean flash with Odin using the latest stock firmware. This doesn't require root and won't trip Knox or warranty.
App cache and memory bloat is always something that's affected me on Android, but since I do a full wipe at least once a year because of changing ROM's, my experience usually stays pretty controlled.

Pretty much all phones suffer from slowdowns the longer they're used. Especially when they go through OS updates, that's a common complaint for both Android and iOS.

Since you've got TMobile bloatware I assume you have G930T, you can flash the G930U (unlocked version) firmware via Odin and it will rid you of bloatware. Home_CSC if you don't want to wipe data, CSC if you do. Updato.com and sammobile.com to get the firmware.
US models can't use custom roms, so stock G930U firmware is your best bet.

It's a common theory that manufacturers intentionally slow down older phones each new flagship release, but there's not really any proof.
New OS builds can be more resource heavy and built to expect higher resource amounts that older devices might not have, since they're usually made with flagships in mind
Otherwise RAM, CPU's and Storage all degrade over time. Best thing you can do is full wipe each new Android version, so that the OS starts on a clean slate and any optimisations it has can work from the start instead of having to try work with a previous builds bloat.
Besides what was mentioned so far, I recommend you also check your installed apps to see if there are any third party unwanted apps installed on your device.

I am on OOS 10.0.11.GM21BA with Magisk and TWRP and I want to update to Android 11 11.0.3.1.GM21BA.
However, I saw that there are mentions of stuck devices after updating and the need for patched boot.img and what not.
Until now I used following method to update:
Disable Magisk Modules
Download newest TWRP to SD
Download Full OTA from OP servers to SD
Flash OTA via local update in system settings
Flash A/B retention script with Magisk
Install Magisk to inactive slot
Reboot
Is this method still a valid way of updating? Do I need some extra steps for the update to Android 11?
I would wait... major reported issues even on Pixel phones.
If your current OS is fast, stable and fulfilling it's mission, let it be.
You have nothing to gain.
Running on Android 11 the OnePlus ranks second to Samsung in having severe aggressive background app killing issues. The full implementation of scoped storage in R will devour cpu cycles like a kid eats candy.
The endless popups asking permission to do everything will give you a new pastime.
I can likely coexist with Q... but R is for reject.

I was actually hoping that I had waited long enough by now for the initial issues to be gone. I actually want to update because of security patches in the first place, which we can't get on Q anymore, at least with stock OOS.
Also, I have multiple friends that updated (just stock phones) and didn't have any major problems, in regards to background killing of apps too, which I would definitely go crazy over if I had to experience that again.
Do you have any further insight to the update process posted?

Can't help you on the update process.
I don't think R will ever be fixed. So much so that I bought another N10+ because both Google Android and Samsung have been dropping the ball so badly I'm stepping back for 2-3 years.
The fact that the N10+ is still a good viable choice today shows how poorly Samsung has done particularly in 2021.
I wouldn't even think twice about not getting security updates. Unless you do something stupid*, malware simply isn't an issue on Android 9 and up. Q has all of the worst vulnerabilities patched anyway. Don't buy into the Gookill security hype.
Been running unpatched Pie N10+ for close to 2 years with over a year on the current load. No malware forced reloads ever, and no malware in over a year. Redundantly backup all critical data and be ready to reload if needed. Really a reload be less trouble than trying to implement R.
Watch what you download, keep email in the cloud, watch over the download folder for anomalies and you'll be fine.
*no saving dumb bunnies...

Well I can't really say much about R, since i haven't had personal day to day experience, and that's where the little things play a key role which can ruin your experience.
When it comes to the security part, I must say we have a different view on that topic. Unfortunately, you don't always have to be the reason for getting pwned, as there are vulnerability that are out of your ability to do something against it unless the system itself gets patched. The amount of those grows considerable faster once it's not updated anymore as the researchers know that there won't be any patch comming against it. Many of the vulnerability get searched on those system on purpose, especially if a big part of the users are still on that OS version. It becomes more lucrative for them then searching vulnerabilities on R and seeing it getting patched 4 weeks later.
Take RackTooth (which we currently don't know how it really works and how it can be fixed) for example, you are basically screwed once it gets out in the wild, if your device it not supported by the manufacturer anymore. That's also a reason why customs ROM are still so important and the manufacturer giving us the ability to unlock out bootloaders so we can continue to safely use our devices once they don't want to support it anymore.
I will probably be switching to Samsung too after my current device as I don't like where OnePlus is headed, especially with the Oppo codebase merge and them giving up on devices so fast.
It's been 2 years and they still haven't fixed the f*cking call on speaker mic problem, nor the audio quality when making a call with Galaxy Buds+! It is really ridiculous. Kinda regret making 10 people in my surroundings get OnePlus phones....
It feels like Samsung is the only real option left, which is sad to see.

There are security vulnerabilities, simply be aware of them and do what you to mitigate them.
After over a year of zero updates though I know the actual threat level is low. Updates are far more likely to cripple the phone than malware.
Most victims pawn themselves, one way or another. The other common inept screw up of those infected is failure to promptly address abnormal behaviors.
Malware needs to be resolved immediately and the phone shutdown until it is. Trojan preloaders count on a person's lack of wherewithal and failure to act promptly. If I got nailed now, at the worst I be reloaded and 99% fully operational in about 2 hours. 6 if I lost the SD card data.
So what? My data, security, everything is redundant, replaceable, resetable.
Right now unless you go with a older Samsung still running on 10 or 9, there aren't many good options. 2022 is looking bleak as well. This is one reason why I got another 10+. In my opinion it's the zenith of Samsung Note flagships and of Android OS. I'm a pragmatist, I go with what works best. The hype rolls right off like water from a duck.

No SD card slot which makes it useless to me.
It also lacks the intense customization stock Samsung's have by way of the Galaxy store.
Samsung's also have builtin workarounds for the lame swipe gesture navigation; Samsung's can easily be set to have screen navigation buttons.
Word of caution, the Samsung interface on Android 11 variant is reportedly a mess.
The spen is a feature I appreciate more the longer I own* the 10+. It's remote bt control and Smart Capture are extremely useful to me. Otherwise when not needed it neatly nests out of sight.
For power users the Note series is still the weapon of choice in many ways.
