so my galaxy s7 phone did it recently
exactly after one year warranty just expired the phone became painfully slow
it was a brand new phone sent from samsung as a replacement for my broken phone replaced under warranty
had zero problems for a whole year and i mean zero like no issues with speed or freezing at all
never dropped or dipped in the water to test the water resistance
always in a case since day one. no crazy apps. actually same exact apps that i have on all my phones.
no new apps were installed before slowdown
i already deleted some apps. cleaned up app cache individually and reset cache from boot screen
tested in safe mode and still slow
im not sure if the update was installed recently or not but the slowdown happened about 2 months ago. was there a tmobile update at that time?
im not really sure.
but this is the third phone that did this.
galaxy s5 that i also bought brand new for a year was well maintained and had no problems
that phone actually started lagging really bad and shutting down multiple times a week or restarting....
before that galaxy s3 did same thing. after exactly a year it became ridiculously slow for absolutely no reason
i install all the apps i use right out of the box. change all the settings to what i want and dont really make any changes after and it usually very stable for about a year
is there an app that i can use to troubleshoot?
or an app that will show me what component is slowing down the system in real time?
obviously something is slowing down the OS, theres gotta be an app that can trace the faulty app or file or component
i cant be the only one who noticed that
is there really no way to pinpoint what is slowing down the phone?
why do i have to reset everything every time it gets slow
isnt there an app that can diagnose what is loading up the system?
this phone is painfully slow suddenly with no apparent reason
Have you been able to view the CPU activity and the RAM allocation?
I am not sure how to do this, but if possible, it might reveal what is happening.
I would try disabling some of the applications one by one. First suspects would be:
1. Facebook
2. Google Play Store.
3. Youtube.
Disable one, then try the phone. If still the same, disable second and try etc.
Jim.
How is your device storage. Once you use more then 50% device storage android starts to lag. It's an issue with the OS.
device storage has always been about the same since brand new. which is about 80% on average.
doesnt safe mode disable all non stock apps? i tried safe mode with same result
windows has a resource monitor that helps alot but i dont know if android has any monitoring app that could help troubleshoot this
Samsung devices are known for getting laggy over time, try a different phone next time, in the meantime, do a factory reset and start fresh.

This is very suspect to me, but I am only a beginner.
Given zelendel's post about (re 50%), I would investigate further. Did you note his credentials?
What does all that data consist of?
What is the total storage capacity of the phone?
Perhaps some of that storage capacity is used as "swap" memory? Just guessing...........I am extrapolating Linux terminology here.
about 10-15 gigs of that is music/videos for airplane or when i have no internet. its been there since i got the phone
other things come and go like downloads documents videos images
im surprised theres no apps to troubleshoot the phone lagging when theres so many people having that problem and the best solution is to just reset the phone. which should be the last resort
if resetting the phone works most of the time then there should be an app that could look for conflicts as it runs in the background.

Depending on the amount of storage in your device that could be a lot.
Resetting the device wipes things. You really can't find an issue if the only issue is storage space. So here is a test. Remove stuff from your device. Give yourself a clean start and then go from there. Adding stuff slowly until it slows down.
I have had dozens of devices and the only time they ever got slow was due to getting low on phone storage.
This even encludes a 5 year old Samsung that I have that is as fast as the day I got it. Mind you there is nothing on it but some games for a kid. I even disabled all of Samsungs crap they install that slows a device down.
Could also be stuff acting up in the background
Run a log cat and see if anything is hanging.
cool thanks ill try that
got my internal memory to under 50%
reset cache again
deleted few apps and moved alot of them to SD card and cleared cache for those too
heres exactly whats happening
theres a delay for every action
2 wifi seems to drop in and out now since it got slow
3 facebook and browser wouldnt load anything on wifi
but as soon as i switch to data it works
i have to restart the phone alot now and close all apps multiple times a day to get them to work
also running safe mode had no effect on speed
i dont know when the last update was from tmobile but it might have been due to crappy update im not sure at this point
i got the phone last end of summer and it worked flawlessly every single day up until last 2 months exactly when warranty expired
how does samsung find faulty hardware when i send it in for service?
do they use an app?
ok this is getting ridiculous.
the phone wen to complete ****
facebook doesnt load posts unless i restert it by closing the app
phone just feels very slow overall.
constantly lags hangs. and in general just completely crappy performance slowly degrading.
i dont know why suddenly it started happening just like my last 3 phones
after about a year theres always a sudden decrease in performance and things start bugging and lagging etc
so theres no way to figure out why its slow?
isnt there some hardware tests or system scan or something that can help point to the problem?
Sorry to read that you are still having this problem Fuzzysig.
Did you try any of the suggestions in my post #4 and/or in Zelendel's post #10?
If so, which ones did you try and what resulted from those changes?

Hi, I was a Samsung user too and faced the same problem.
I went through various threads which gave me multiple solutions: rooting, removing bloatware, cpu monitoring and many more.
None of that worked. The phone was so slow that it was not usable.
Ultimately I had to throw it and buy another phone.
Then I noticed this is not just me, all Samsung users face the same problem even the flagship users.
I swear I'll never buy a Samsung phone and never let anyone buy one.
i already did everything i know to figure out
i clear cache all teh time on the phone and on apps like facebook and other heavy apps
i keep the internal memory below 50% use
phone is almost 2 years old and worked flawlessly for a year and a half.
always wore a case never actually dropped it but suddenly it started lagging and slowed down noticeably
then few weeks ago it got even worse. apps hang all the time
dont update dont respond
for example besides being slow facebook and instagramm and other apps would not load updates or internet would not load pages
facebook wont load new comments and says retry connection
i close it with the left button menu and reopen and it works again for few hours and does same thing
its very fn frustrating why is there no good diagnostic software for android system after 10 years on the market is beyond me...
im tired of clearing cache and resetting everything. and tired of buying new phones all the time especially when this phone was over 700 dollars. **** like this shouldnt happen on a 700 dollar phone. i would espect a 150 dollar phone from costco to break in less than 2 years but not top of the line phone
I would personally recommend backing up anything on the phone important to you, then doing a full clean flash with Odin using the latest stock firmware. This doesn't require root and won't trip Knox or warranty.
App cache and memory bloat is always something that's affected me on Android, but since I do a full wipe at least once a year because of changing ROM's, my experience usually stays pretty controlled.
is there no way to find out what is causing all this without a complete wipe?
i clean all app cache often and phone cache also
i mean if i have to erase everything all the time and start over whats the point of buying a 700 dollar phone?
is there a clean stock android rom that doesnt have tmobile bloatware?
Pretty much all phones suffer from slowdowns the longer they're used. Especially when they go through OS updates, that's a common complaint for both Android and iOS.
This article generated some buzz the other day suggesting that despite being flash memory, fragmentation heavily affects android performance https://www.tuxera.com/blog/why-is-my-android-phone-slowing-down/
Since you've got TMobile bloatware I assume you have G930T, you can flash the G930U (unlocked version) firmware via Odin and it will rid you of bloatware. Home_CSC if you don't want to wipe data, CSC if you do. Updato.com and sammobile.com to get the firmware.
US models can't use custom roms, so stock G930U firmware is your best bet.
so it sno tthe hardware issue then?
i just feel like every time theres a software update before the release of their new phone my old samsung phone suddenlyslows down to complete crap.
is it just me or anyone else notice that also?
It's a common theory that manufacturers intentionally slow down older phones each new flagship release, but there's not really any proof.
New OS builds can be more resource heavy and built to expect higher resource amounts that older devices might not have, since they're usually made with flagships in mind
Otherwise RAM, CPU's and Storage all degrade over time. Best thing you can do is full wipe each new Android version, so that the OS starts on a clean slate and any optimisations it has can work from the start instead of having to try work with a previous builds bloat.
Besides what was mentioned so far, I recommend you also check your installed apps to see if there are any third party unwanted apps installed on your device.
I know there are memory management issues with this phone; what I'm not sure though is if the behavior I'm experiencing is just a manifestation of this well-known problem or another issue.
Since I got the phone a month ago, after some period of use after rebooting, simple actions like switching between two apps can cause the phone to hang for a long time - usually 20 or 30 seconds. The phone isn't completely hung - I can still go back to the home screen, and do some things, but whatever app I tried to switch to will be non-responsive for this whole time. Eventually, it will just start working again.
Other times, typing using the google keyboard will get stuck - that is, I can still type, but nothing shows up in the field where the text should appear. After a while it will suddenly "catch up" and everything I typed appears.
These two issues both seem to start happening around the same time, so it seems memory use related, but the amount of time involved seems very excessive for swapping.
I can fix this just by rebooting, but it always comes back after a while. I suspect it's related to how many different apps I've loaded and not just time of use, though, since sometimes it won't happen for a day or two, but it always happens again at some point.
I removed a bunch of apps that were migrated from my old phone (a Motorola Z Force), too, to try to eliminate a badly-behaving app, but I never had any issues like this on that phone, and it didn't make any difference.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Or does it sound like a possible hardware problem? I don't want to swap the phone unless it's clear this is abnormal behavior. Thanks.
It's abnormal behavior. My first thought is it might be related to a balky network or intermittent connection. Just a wild guess. Do you see the same issue in airplane mode? Also, if you check battery or cpu usage is anything hogging resources?

I've used the phone in exactly the same circumstances as my prior phone (and other devices) so I don't think it has to do with network connectivity; but next time it happens I'll try switching to airplane mode just to be sure. There's no visual indication of a network drop (e.g. wifi status icon). I haven't checked for anything hogging resources during these events, and generally I'm not having any battery life or performance problems. It's just switching apps that brings everything to a standstill for a while, and then it works fine again.

Maybe check the temp when it's stalling. This app might show something: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.glgjing.stark&hl=en_US
I have the exact same issue as OP describes.
Had a 64gb Pixel 3 when it was first released and it manifested the issue with the random hangs and freezes. I decided it was too buggy and returned it.
A month later got a 128gb Pixel 3 on the gift card promo and it is exhibiting the same issue as the OP and my original 64gb unit.
Doubtful it is a hardware issue since this is my second one with the same issue.
I have tried factory reset and removing any un-necessary programs on both, but the condition still persists.
Both phones were on Fi.
If the January patch does not fix the issue it will be time to switch back to iPhone.

Mine's 128gb (Verizon). The January patch looks trivial so not expecting any change here...
Not going to switch to iPhone but troubling that you have had this with two different phones. At the same time, pp seemed to think this is not typical behavior, and if it's a common OS issue then wouldn't a lot of people be talking about it? I'm not a crazy power user or anything, I never play games, pretty much use Waze, whatsapp, camera, facebook (lite), spotify, etc... really pretty standard apps.
I wonder if there's something unique to us that could be involved here? I'm not using any apps I wasn't using on my old phone, but I also had Oreo before and not Pie, so not a direct comparison. When I first set up my phone, though, all my old apps were migrated, including some Verizon bloatware I couldn't delete from the old phone. Is it possible that apps that were automatically migrated (but later deleted) could have left something behind that's causing issues with PIe?

I have have been on Google phones since Nexus 4 and upgrading like a good consumer every year.
Like yourself I am not doing anything crazy and have the run of the mill stuff like FB, Snap, kik, Whatsapp and IG. The only thing out of the ordinary I have on the phone is Cerberus and BlackBerry email.
Apps don't get migrated so that is not the issue. When you setup a new phone or transfer, some of the data is moved, but the app is re-downloaded from the app store.

Right - but it installed -everything- I had on my old phone including some Motorola & Verizon apps, which I then uninstalled (but maybe even missed some). Just thinking it might be possible that something hardware-specific to my old phone got installed on the pixel. In theory shouldn't matter but there seem to be so many nuances to Android, particularly across major releases, that I wondered if this could have been involved in the problem.
Anecdotally, it seems like it's been happening less often over time. I haven't had it happen in a few days, though I installed the update yesterday so I'm within 24 hrs of a clean boot now.

I've been having exactly the same issues for the last couple of days. Have just done a factory reset but the problem persists. The biggest issue is that when the phone is locked it seems to freeze as well and takes about 15-20 secs to unlock. Also if you phone it while its locked (and frozen) the incoming call isn't acknowledged (no ringing !) until after its unfrozen. Looks like I may have to return it and get a different phone !
Mike
More than a few people have been having issues with their Pixel 3, but I've yet to experience a single issue with memory management or slowdowns. In fact, I've found the Pixel 3 to be a far smoother UI than the iPhone X on the newest versions of iOS. Maybe I got lucky, but I'm more inclined to think it's about use. Just like my desktop operating system, I start from scratch every time I do a reformat, reset, or upgrade of a device. I can see there being issues with migrating old data. I'm also a fairly light app user; I've got around 100 apps in my drawer, most of which are Google apps or banking apps. Are the people experiencing these slowdowns installing a lot of things or running more resource intensive apps like Facebook? Not to say you shouldn't be able to do that with your phone, but I'm curious how behavior differs in our situations.
Feb update?
OP here, so more than a week since the February update landed and I have not had this happen since then. I'm kind of shocked, honestly, and keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but so far it looks like something they did fixed this.
The only other significant change I made was to uninstall the Facebook Lite app, a few days ago, but I've used that long before I had a Pixel 3 so doubt it's related. So... :fingers-crossed:!!

Maybe I should give Pixel 3 a try. Tried P3 twice since October and it was a phenomenal laggy mess specially under load ... My Pixel 2 had its ups and downs, specially with the Pie release. Took them 3-4 months to 'get it right' so I'd expect Pixel 3 to be no different.
I was experiencing some lag and short freeze (2 to 7/8 seconds) with my pixel after the latest update.
I tried a factory reset with little hope but it seems it did the trick for me. No issues ever since.
Hello all. I'm in need of help. I recently tried to update my phone to the May update. It says failed update. Error Code:410. I contacted Verizon Wireless 1st. They couldn't fix it. They connected me to Samsung and they told me it was a carrier issue. any ideas on how to fix it.
if you did a phone call when speaking to Samsung, one other way you can try to get help is reporting an issue on Samsung Members app. The app will pull device logs and determine if some function has failed. The key point is to report soon after seeing the issue, so try to reproduce the error and then submit the error using the app.
Really if your Note is running fast, stable and fulfilling it's mission I would leave it's firmware alone. General and security updates are overrated. An update can easily break it or leave you with a lot less then you had.
Android 11 is Android in a no way out high G flat spin; load it and cry a river of tears.
Even outdated Androids systems rarely get nailed by serious malware unless you do something stupid. My stock AT&T Note 10+ is still running Pie on a load that's a year old. Zero issues. I disabled updates almost a year and a half ago because I knew Q would screw it up.
Sometimes updates really screw up the phone locking it down to make future rooting or downgrading impossible.
In reality a rootkit would cause less trouble; it takes me about 2 hours to do a factory reset and bring the phone back to 99% full functionality as long as the SD card data is intact.
Retaining firmware you like to use is more important than any update unless it enhances your user experience. New OSs keep you off balance with a constant learning curve, forcing you to find new solutions and work arounds.
For what? I would waste far more time migrating to Q then a 2 hour reload would cost me. Worse I loss critical functionality.
At least wait a month or more to see if the update blew up other people's phone
Having no control over OTA downloads is dangerous and can lead to a bad flash or trashware you will hate. Fixing it is time consuming and in some cases impossible; disable auto updates.
Use your SD card as a data drive, only the OS, apps, and download folder goes on the internal memory. Keep everything you need for a reload including copies of your apps on the SD card as well your database of music, vids, pics etc.
Back the SD card up redundantly to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other. Done
Hi guys.
It's been approximately 6 years since i bought this old beast. this is the first phone in my life that didn't torture me with freezes or lags after using it for some time thanks to its powerful hardware.
but now this beast is not agile like how it used to be, sometimes it freezes and does things with too much latency, as far as i remember, there were about 2 or 3 times that my phone froze too hard that i needed to do force shut down and almost all of them happened not more than 2 years ago. when i bought my PC 2 years ago, i started flashing different custom and official roms so many times now my phone runs LineageOS 18.1 currently.
I'm curious to know what caused my phone to slow down.
since i flash my phone sometimes and do full wipe each time before doing it, i think the problem is not software-related.
I've did some searches in google and found out that it can't be the CPU and it seems true because sometimes i'm playing some music while browsing in chrome and switching between apps, the phone lags even freezes but the music keeps playing without any stutter. I've read that memory chips can get worn over time so i'm guessing the problem is caused by one or both of these two:
1.eMMC chip
2.RAM chip
what is your comment? are these two the source of the problem? can the eMMC chip get replaced in this phone?
Have you updated or upgraded it, you know the destroyer of worlds stuff?
Phones don't slow down for no reason.
If nothing else changed and it's running atypically after a factory reset, the firmware may have been corrupted, reflash same version.
Pre Pie OS's are suspectable to that nasty class of rootkits that can worm out of the user partition. Again reflash it.
Battery, when was it last replaced? If the battery can't sink peak current demands it will cause all manner of trouble. Replace every 1 to 2 years on a heavily used device, routine maintenance.
It's possible there's been a subtle hardware failure maybe the ram or a microscopic transistor or two in the chipset. Cracked solder joint; BGA chipsets are especially vulnerable to this. A ribbon connector connection is intermittent.

You should be able to look at the memory each app is using. Chrome is known for being a memory hog. Your phone has 3 GB of Ram. Back 6 years ago that would be OK, today 6GB is even on the low side.

well, last time i remember i dropped the phone was about 2 years ago. one of the annoying problems of my phone is it's front and back panels start getting detached, i got used to it, there is much dust inside the phone, the camera quality has been reduced because of it.
this phone played a gaming PC's role when i didn't have a PC (sometimes i held my phone in front of my fan to stop CPU throttling because of heat).
i too think there might be possible failures.

You're right, but i've experienced problems which were caused by low RAMs. the apps crash when there is no space available in RAM, i had this problem with all other phones. but in this phone i haven't seen such problem(because of RAM) so far even once!
Rule #1, if a OS is fast, stable and fulfilling its mission, let it be.
Upgrades, destroyer of worlds
Pre Android 9 have some very serious rootkit vulnerabilities. Android 9 is fairly secure and best left be especially on an older phone.
On my N10+'s I don't do upgrades or updates. Running on Android 9 and 10.

Pre Android 9 OS are suspectable to those nasty rootkits that can worm out of the user partition.
A reflash maybe needed to purge it. Security though is largely controlled by the user; no saving dumb bunnies... not even Android 12.
I went from Kitkat to Pie, yeah a little future shock there
Pie runs very well but that's on a N10+ with 12gb of ram. Nominally it uses 5-5.7gb of ram, so on an phone with less ram than that it may impact performance.
Pie has some annoying data app limitations but is reasonably secure, fast, stable and no scoped storage.
I have a second N10+ that's running on Android 10 (it shipped like that) Scoped storage appears to not be fully active. It has close to 100 new Samsung system apps to make it look and function like the Pie load. If that gives you an idea of how badly Google Android is boning developers. Otherwise it's stats are about the same as are appearance and functionality.
Old apps like the 6yo free version of WP Office will run fine in it. However Karma Firewall losses it's valuable logging feature in 10 That seems to be the worst of it.
Android 11 and especially 12 are hogs on the N10+. Scoped storage is fully active along with the endless "do you really want to" permissions.
Might as well have a bloody Apple as use 11 or 12. Functionality and usability take a nose dive along with battery life. Gookill strikes again...
Be warned.
As a result I will remain on Android 9 and 10.
Between Samsung's and Google Android's ball dropping fest I blew off the N20U, S21U and the latest S22U for another N10+, no regrets.
So yeah, you gotta do what works best for you.
I use whatever comes in handy
