Broken screen working again on low battery - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
Some while ago my oneplus 7pro felt from the stairs. The backside is complety broken, but the frontscreen was ok because of the screenprotector.
After a while i noticed 'a lot' of dead pixels on the lower left side of the screen. The phone was still usable so i didn't bother about it.
Suddenly during normal use, my screen started flickering and my screen went off. It seemed that the screen was devided in 2 where the notificationbar was on the same height of the broken screen pixels.
I could see some things, but with a green film. But not possible of unlocking the screen.
I tought that the screen was completly broken and i moved to a spare phone.
I still hoped that the screen would do some sort of a reset when I let the battery completely drain, charge a bit and try again.
I checked almost every day on what percentage. But when it was on 13% (or nearby that %) the screen was working again like nothing happened before. I tought it was working again and charged it.
Because it worked again on a low percentage, I tought it may be a lower refreshrate of some sort of stuff that is on during battery save mode.
I left it charging some small time, tried again and screen was broken again.
I tought it was a lucky shot, so i didn't bothered again about the phone.
Yesterday i checked my phone again out of curiosity, and guess what, it was working again.
So I'd like to know what might cause it to work again on low battery. I lowered the resolution and refresh rate already.
Anyone who got an idea?

Nothing short of taking the phone to a repair shop will restore your phone to normal.
It's just going to get worse, there's nothing you can do to stop the progression, short of a repair & even then, you're probably throwing good money after bad, considering the type of damage incurred.

Can't be sure, my guess is some voltage leakage on higher voltage and short the screen somehow. If you can try de assemble and re assemble the phone. Just my guesses.

I suppose the higher the voltage the phone is able to provide the screen the worse it's going to get. Send it to OnePlus. Don't get it done independently, they cost way more

Backlight Stuck On Low

I have an HTC One XL (Rogers-Canada) and my back-light is stuck at the lowest setting. This persists all the time from the boot-loader, to recovery to ROM. It seems to persist across Stock ROMs, Custom based on Stock, ICS & JB, AOSP, etc. When I attempt to adjust the brightness in settings the screen stays dim until I slide it to the brightest setting (far right) and then the screen goes completely dark (ie...back-light off). This problem started after upgrading from CleanROM5 to CleanROM6 but it wasn't immediate. It was probably a week or two before the problem cropped up so that may be unrelated.
Since the problem started I've been flashing everything I can get my hands on trying to see if it's software related. I went from unlocked & rooted to Unlocked/Rooted/SuperCID/S-Off but to no avail. I had a glimmer of hope at one point during the process of flashing various ROMs when the phone plugged in at the boot-loader. I had left it for a while (doing something else) and the backlight suddenly came back to full brightness. So, I happily flashed RUU, then unlocked, then rooted and installed CleanROM. Then, after an hour or so of getting the phone setup again it went back to low back-light.
Questions I assume you will ask...
Doesn't this sound like a hardware problem?
Yep, definitely could be. The only reason I think think the back-light isn't broken is that it is still working, just at a really low level. I can tell this because I can see the screen in a dark room reasonably well and the back-light really does turn completely off when I move the brightness slider to max. But, yes, it could be hardware...
What Hboot were you on when you went from CleanROM5 to CleanROM6?
I was boot-loader unlocked + rooted on Hboot 1.11.
Have you tried draining the battery?
I did run the batter down until the phone shut off but I don't think I completely drained it. I seem to recall draining lithium battery to totally empty is actually a bad idea. Any suggestions on this? Is this any different from powering down the phone in terms of resetting some software issue?
Why not just return it to Rogers?
I'm not actually a Rogers customer (Bell). I bought the phone off of someone who changed their mind and went with a different carrier. I have the box and Rogers stickers for service and repair and I'll try that if it comes to it but I doubt it's that simple.
Any help would be appreciated. Are there mods related to brightness on the HOXL I could try? Is there something lower level than an RUU I can flash to try and get everything back to stock? Is it worth trying the JET tool or is that just for real brick situations?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Draining the battery to shutdown does not actually lower the battery voltage to zero. There are safeguards against that, as draining a Li ion battery to zero (or actually below a certain threshold) would actually render it unable to take a charge.
However, the problem is that the safeguards do not always work in a completely fail safe manner. Most times, running the battery down will not have any negative consequences. But there is a slight possibility that the safeguards will not work completely intended, and the battery voltage will be allowed to drop too low, causing the battery to be unable to charge. Its happened to some folks on this device, and other Android devices. Sometimes, leaving the phone on the wall charger overnight will bring the battery back. Otherwise, it might require a battery meter with a "boost" function, which is normally only available at repair shops.
So the moral to all that, is to avoid draining the battery to shutoff whenever possible. The other point is, that I don't see how draining the battery would help your backlight issue at all. The battery meter calibrations all get wiped whenever you flash a new ROM or RUU. So the backlight issue is not likely related to battery meter calibrations. TO properly calibrate the battery meter after a ROM flash or RUU, its good practice to charge to full, then discharge to 10 or 20%, then repeat a couple times. But again, I don't think this would help or affect your backlight issue.
Since the problem persists through ROM flashes and RUU, it does suggest a hardware issue. But its not certain.
OK, I'm pretty sure it's a hardware fault. I was cleaning off the screen in the middle of troubleshooting and the back-light flickered to life and went back off again. I may have been pushing a little harder than usual out of frustration! I proceeded to gently but firmly push on various part of the screen and was able to get the back-light to come on and off briefly. Now it seems totally dead as I can only barely make out what is on the LCD and being in the dark doesn't help.
I have some experience taking phones apart so I'd like to take a run at replacing whatever is broken. The simplest swap would be the LCD/digitizer assembly but I'm concerned that the problem could lie in the motherboard or power circuitry.
Does anyone have any experience with HOXL back-lights dying and fixing them?
Thanks

Backlight is part of the LCD. You can't replace just the backlight. Seperating digitizer from LCD is very difficult. Most people are ordering LCD and digitizer when either needs to be replaced. HTC has a minimum of 1 year warranty, some countries 2 years. Before ordering new parts, see if you are under warranty. If not try reseating the cables that connect the screen to the MB. If that doesn't work it's time to order new parts. Good luck. You tube has videos showing disassembly and screen replacement. Watch a few first, it will make things easier for you.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I realize that the light itself is part of the screen assembly but I've read elsewhere that some of the circuitry that drives it is located on the motherboard. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with a back-light that had died and what parts they replaced. I'm happy to take the plunge and get a replacement screen assembly for $75 but it's be a shame if the problem was actually on the board.
You mentioned the HTC warranty...I assumed that HTC would wash their hands of phones that were obtained through carriers. Has anyone replaced/repaired a phone through HTC that was obtained from a carrier initially? Mine came from Rogers but I'm with Bell so I doubt Rogers would help me if I tried to get service for what was originally someone else's phone.
Thanks
Contact HTC directly. If it's under warranty, they will fix it.

Finicky LCD? Other problems too

So i've been having a lot of issues with my N5 lately, mostly small stuff like general slowness, poor battery life, not surprising on an almost 3 year old phone. I also lose cell service way too frequently (not an issue with my carryer, all my friends are on the same network and are fine). Camera won't focus anymore (though im pretty sure this was my fault, probably broke it while taking it apart). I'm pretty sure the battery connector on my motherboard is damaged. I've had many problems with the battery reading its temperature as -30 C (battery heath "cold"), i've replaced the battery 4 times now and i still get that problem every now and then. Pushing on the connector fixes it temporarily, so im pretty sure some pin is bent slightly out of place and i don't know how to fix that. It recently started having this issue where just moving or bumping the phone the wrong way would cause the phone to shut off. Probably an issue with the battery connector again. I tried fiddling with it but it didn't do much.
The other day i turned it on and the LCD was backlit, but black except for one single vertical white line. Rebooted and it looked normal. Few hours later i got really pissed off with it for shutting off in the middle of an important text and threw it at the wall (not the best idea i know). Screen was already cracked so i didn't really care. Ever since then the LCD has been a real pain in the ass. i can turn the phone on but there's nothing on the screen. Ii get haptic feedback when the Google logo would up, and the notification LED is flashing like i have a message. The backlight is on and pushing hard on the cable connecting the motherboard to the daughter board i can see it start to turn on, (Google logo, few seconds of boot animation) but then back to black (while still backlit).
I can post photos if it would help diagnose/fix this, my phone is my main camera and i don't want to bother anyone if i don't have to.
Anyone know any tricks that might squeeze another mouth out of this dying phone? Any response is appreciated, Thanks!
The issues could have been related to the power button or physical internal damage. My suggestion: replace the screen with a cheap 3rd party screen if the internal components are still working. This will give you more time with your existing phone and allow you to have a working backup.

Mi4i - screen died after replacement

My screen shattered rendering the phone unusable (image was fine, but the touch was partially off). So I ordered a replacement and replaced it. At first when I booted the phone with new screen installed, the image was glitching and freezing after a few seconds until I turned the screen off and on. I disconnected the battery a few times during the tests and sometimes the image would not show at all. Anyway, I thought this is the best I can get, I just needed the phone to be usable, so I placed the screws back in and put on the case. The display become kind of more stable - there was still a tiny bit of noise, but it didn't freeze. I set the alarm and went to sleep. After maybe 3 hours the alarm went off, I postponed it for an hour. It was the last time the display worked. Now reconnecting the battery or any other component doesn't help anymore.
What could be the cause? Is the screen permanently dead now?
I doubt this could be a software issue, is that even possible?
Why would it work for a few hours and then just stop - maybe it was just faulty and I should demand a refund?

I think it is more likely to be a hardware issue. Contact service center or from where you got replacement.
Is there anything I could try doing myself? Any clues? If not, then I'll just demand a refund. I don't think I damaged the screen in any way, it was working for a couple of hours and then just stopped.
maybe the parts is broke. or flexible not installe well

Possible display damage? Or proximity sensor issue?

Hi everybody.
I’ve had this phone for 10 months now and it’s been great. Yesterday, when i was trying to make a call, it was telling me that i am too close to the screen. I understood that the proximity sensor was acting funny, but I didn’t had time to look into it, because it was not covered by anything and it was in good light. This morning it was a short white flash when I unlocked it or when I was turning the screen off. It worked great all day after that. Then this evening i was using the phone and all of the sudden the screen started to flash white, then it would turn off fast and back on all white. It did that for 4-5 times, then it went in the state you see in the clip below. At one tine, it turned on like nothing happened for 3-4 seconds.
If i plug the charger in, it reacts normal. It's making the charging sound and it vibrates. Seems to be alive in the background, even though it's not displaying anything.
Does it have anything to do with the proximity sensor? Is it the ribbon cable connecting the display to the motherboard faulty? Should i just order a new display assembly?
Interesting, the next day seems to behave a bit different. I had remote erased it, i didn't want any of my personal data to remain on it.
I have found out that if the brightness level is low, i takes a few seconds until it starts blinking. If the brightness is high, then it does that straight away.
Ok, i will post a follow up for anyone else having the same problem. Now i can see that the display is damaged on the top left corner, the pixels are staying lit up bright. Now i can use it on low brightness for longer periods of time without flickering.
I have ordered a replacement screen assembly and i'm still waiting for it, as i don't have the phone under warranty. Looking forward to getting it fixed.
I have also ordered a replacement screen and will replace it when the shipment arrived. Have you found a repair manual for the screen replacement?
I have already removed the back cover of my phone and it seems it will not be so difficult. But it would be better to follow a manual.

I read this post now, I've got this kinda of broblem a month ago, but this happened only when the phone temperature became hot, I mean over 40°C, after a factory reset everything became normal, I no longer got high temperature and this problem don't appear, so at least in my phone it wasn't a hardware problem.

How was the teardown ? I can't find any videos on it. The axon 7 was a pain for me because the aluminum case was a pain to take off around the corners and got damaged a bit. Hopefully removing the back of the axon 10 is a little easier . Thanks for any info

Screen won't turn on G965F

Hello! I replaced my battery with a genuine one yesterday. The phone worked fine for a few hours. Then it started showing a white frame with a green line once in a minute. After that it progressively worsened in the course of two hours. It went through green screen with numerous green horizontal lines, completely black screen and a black screen with a few green lines. Now the screen is completely black and shows the lockscreen for a few milliseconds when locking/unlocking and now this is a permanent state. It is not going better. The only way I am able to use the phone now is through Dex and scrcpy.
The screen has no cracks and the phone has never been dropped. Which is strange, because it really looks like a hardware issue. There is no water damage as well.
I would like to know what may be the cause and I will be grateful if you could suggest any temporary or permanent solutions.
Currently I have tried the safe mode, oled saver, min and max brightness in the hope of being a software issue and still no luck.
Thank you in advance!

Are you certain that the replacement batter is the original OEM battery with the same specs and ratings as the stock battery or is it a higher rated aftermarket battery with "OEM design"?
If replacing your battery required opening the device and exposing the hardware to remove the battery, you may have damaged other parts of the hardware without realizing it.
From your description, your display is fried, probably due to the battery not being compatible or due to something internally making contact that shouldn't be making contact or due to the ribbon being damaged or slightly pulled loose while changing the battery and eventually completely disconnected after replacing the battery and reassembling the device.
Either way, it is definitely a hardware issue.
